    In General
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Supposedly the Nara Clan's thing, but very few people show the lazy part. Then again, a large number of them are in intellectual non-combat positions (medic, researcher, bureaucrat) so maybe it's just subtle.
  • Casting a Shadow: This constitutes the clan's secret techniques.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Every member of the clan, including civilians, knows the Shadow Possession Jutsu to prevent it from being forgottten.
Nara believe in contingency plans. Every person in the clan, be they ninja or civilian knows at least the theory of the Shadow Possession Jutsu. That way, if something happened to the clan, there would be someone to pass that knowledge on.
  • Family Theme Naming: Clan Heads and heirs (and Shikako) traditionally have names starting with "Shika" sound. If somebody is born with a different name they will change it.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Some examples are names that translate to "deer boy", "deer girl" and "life or death".
  • People Puppets: Via peoples shadow, implied to be the work of current clan head Shikaku.
  • Shadow Pin: Clan specialty (Shadow Paralysis Jutsu) until it became Shadow Possession Jutsu.
  • The Medic: The Nara clan as a whole are considered medical experts, as Shikako notes in Chapter 3.

    Shikamaru Nara
Shikako's twin brother, the next head of the clan, and a member of Team 10.
  • Always Someone Better: Shikako notes that her brother if far more intelligent that herself.
By nine it was incredibly clear that my assumptions about being as smart as Shikamaru had been incredibly, incredibly arrogant. I wasn't even close. Not even with a twenty year head start. It was a little humbling. I don't know if any one else saw it, because I was more motivated, I was constantly reading because I liked learning new things, but I knew, and our parents knew.
  • Amicable Exes: With Tenten.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His left arm is turned into stone and crushed by Ishidate in Chapter 113.
  • Bash Brothers: With Choji, shown in their Brains and Brawn team-up against Tayuya.
  • Berserk Button: Harming Shikako is the worst. Ironically he hasn't gotten much chance to follow through on it though, as the people who do so are either not in their right minds or too dangerous for him to succeed yet.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: After Shikako's ribs are broken, Shikamaru successfully threatens and frightens Sasuke Uchiha into submission.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Shikamaru frequently displays his love and devotion to Shikako. Sadly, they often argue due to Shikamaru's desire that Shikako leave combat forces for a supporting position and her 'talent' at getting into dangerous situations.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Subverted in the Forest of Death. Despite his best efforts they don't arrive until after the fighting ends. It's still much sooner than they arrived in cannon.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: As in canon, but it becomes clear that he is more quick to get motivated due to Shikako's influence, such as when Team 10 showed up in the Forest of Death or when he took initiative in getting Shikako accepted into Research and Development. Asuma lampshades this in Chapter 117 while Shikamaru is recovering form losing one of his arms.
"You're a genius, Shikamaru. I think you could do anything you set your mind to," Asuma said, which would have been support except it wasn't. It was damming. "And that's the problem, isn't it?"
  • Casting a Shadow: He's technically better at it than Shikako is, in that he's hinted to be able to overpower her shadows and he uses the more advanced techniques (Shadow Stitching, Shadow Strangle) more often than Shikako.
  • Catchphrase: His is "Troublesome."
  • Character Tics: Shikamari says "Troublesome" a lot and does the thinking seal when thinking of something deeply.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Growing up with a beloved twin sister completely averts this, unlike his canon personality.
  • It's All My Fault: As Shikako's elder brother he sees himself as supposed to protect her, despite Shikako generally being a better fighter and them having dangerous jobs. He feels this way when she gets seriously hurt in the Forest of Death, in Tanzaku Gai, in the Dead Wastes, etc.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Shikamaru gets several, since his sister isn't always around to witness them.
    • Subversion in the Sound Four Arc, where even with Choji fighting the Doki, Shikamaru at point-blank range with every advantage he could stack up still wasn't able to overpower Tayuya. It became Choji's moment when he took the Yellow Curry Pill to succeed.
  • Only Sane Man: Shikamaru may think he's this due to freaking out when his loved ones get injured and they (Shikako especially) brush it off, but he arguably takes it too far in the other direction at times.
  • Opposites Attract: Zig-zagged. While he does have some suggestive interactions with Temari, he starts dating Tenten around Chapter 100 and the relationship lasts around a year (and 30 chapters).
  • Rank Up: Was promoted to chunin during Konoha Exams.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Defied. Shikamaru doesn't (or doesn't want to) see how much Shikako has changed, still seeing her as his sickly, shy little sister.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Subverted when he starts seeing Tenten. While he doesn't announce it from the rooftops (his twin only finds out when Ino sees him on a date) he never denies it when teased and does go out of his way to spend time with her.
  • Shock and Awe: Per canon, has lightning as his element.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: In a Sibling Yin-Yang way. Shikako admits that Shikamaru is ridiculously smarter than her while it's obvious that she is explosively better than him in direct combat, but she is not dumb and he is not weak either.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Wakes up when Shikako is fighting Jashin even if he doesn't realise what is wrong.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Shikamaru actually puts in the effort to win his Chunin Exams fight with Shino. It's prompted by the fact that his sister surrendered to him in the preliminaries and he can't disrespect that.
  • You Are Not Alone: Is one of the first people to reassure Naruto this after Naruto tells them his secret.
  • You Monster!: Shikamaru is planning to kill Orochimaru and Itachi for what they did to Shikako.

    Shikaku Nara
The father or Shikako and Shikamaru and Yoshino's husband. He is also the Jounin Commander of Konoha.
  • The Ace: Is highly intelligent and very skilled at shadow techniques, with there being implications that he invented the Shadow Possession Jutsu.
    • After the Tsukuyomi incident, he creates a new jutsu specifically to counter the Sharingan and teaches it to his kids.
  • The Comically Serious: Shikaku subtly jokes and smiles, but rarely laughs. He notes that if he hasn't been called in about his daughter's mission then it probably isn't an emergency, and when he tells her he has a list of clansmen interested in getting lessons in sealing, he hands her the Clan Register.
  • Hidden Depths: Sunshine Sidestories reveals that he worked as an ANBU agent during the war and he was temporarily disowned for breaking an arranged marriage to be with Yoshino instead.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Appears to realize something like this has happened involving Shikako's necklace and the events at Gelel.
    • He doesn't know about the exact events of Hot Spring Arc, though he suspects Shikako was involved somehow.
  • Non-Idle Rich: It's subtle, but as a clan head in close alliance with at least two fellow heads he would be one of the most influential people in Konoha even if he weren't also the Jounin Commander. While they don't have a mansion, Shikako does pick up on little hints that her family is very well off and powerful.
  • Oblivious to Love: Discussed but Averted. He realizes his affection and initiates his and Yoshino's Relationship Upgrade, but Inoichi suggests this or Celibate Hero may have been the case when he was younger.
Inoichi: Of course it would take a woman actually hitting you over the head to catch your attention. Nothing less could have done it.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Captures Hidan with help from Inoichi and Chouza.
  • Papa Wolf: He's normally rather hands-off when it comes to Shikako's affairs but if he feels that the situation is dire enough to warrant his direct intervention, there are no lengths he won't go through to keep his daughter safe. He and his friends hunt down and capture Hidan when he threatens his daughter.
  • Parents as People: He (correctly) suspects Shikako knows more than she lets on and feels like he's let her down, as she carries the burden alone.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Averted. He fell in love with a woman other than the one arranged for him and was temporarily disowned when he married Yoshino.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Very laid back in general and willing to usually let the younger generations spread their wings as long as they don't mess up too badly.
  • Retired Badass: Subverted. He's technically retired from field (and ANBU) work, but still active as the Jounin Commander and he gets sent into the field when Cloud starts testing defenses to be on hand for strategy.
  • Shock and Awe: Per canon, his element is lightning and his son inherited it.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: He clearly senses that something is wrong when Shikako is confronting Jashin.

    Yoshino Nara
Shikako and Shikamaru's mother and Shikaku's wife.
  • Almighty Mom: Often tells off her lazy son.
  • Anger Born of Worry: One of Yoshino's main character traits, but justified because ninja life is dangerous.
    • Most clearly seen after Shikako briefly falls into the Dark, and she starts shouting at Shikaku for treating this like it was normal. He defuses her with reassurance that he was being careful and Shikako only has a spiritual fever.
    • She subverts this in the aftermath of the Tsukuyomi incident because her anger has burnt out after a month of near-hopeless waiting.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: Played With. Many of the Nara other than Shikaku don't warm up to Yoshino until the birth of the next heir, and given that Shikako was so sickly some didn't even then.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Shikako spends the first few weeks of her life crying permanently and Yoshino sometimes wishes her daughter would just shut up. When the Kyuubi attacks and Shikako does finally shut up, Yoshino is terrified that her daughter is dead of chakra poisoning.
  • Betty and Veronica: The ninja equivalent of Betty. Yoshino isn't from a ninja family, has no secret techniques, is only of moderate skills and power, and doesn't consider herself very attractive. Shikaku still chooses her and breaks the arranged marriage to a woman favored by his clan to be their next lady.
  • Convenient Miscarriage: Discussed in Sunshine Sidestories. There's a high likelihood of ninja twins being born with disabilities or at least one dying in the womb, but Yoshino refuses to induce miscarriage and try again.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her element, which Shikako inherited.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: It's happened to her at least sometimes due to either security clearances or her family not wanting to invoke her anger at them.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Yoshino would have sent her sickly daughter to civilian school, invoking this, had Shikako not insisted on trying to be a ninja.
  • Never My Fault: Played for laughs. Years after the fact she still insists that it's Shikaku's fault for getting in her line of fire when her earth jutsu hits him while he was trying to save her life.
  • Oblivious to Love: Yoshino's relationship with Shikaku didn't feel like romance at all until he kissed her on the mouth, and the revelation knocked her off-balance.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Though not as much as Shikaku, Yoshino realises that there's little she can do to stop her children from going head first into danger.
  • Rescue Romance: She and Shikaku met when he saved her from enemies that had her outnumbered.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Only in Sunshine Sidestories do we discover that Yoshino knew Kushina in passing and has always known exactly whose son Naruto is.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: For a while, it looked like Yoshino didn't contribute as much to her children. But after Shikako changes her outfit and hair, Shikaku confirms that she's the spitting image of Yoshino at that age.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: A surprise for Shikako and Shikamaru rather than their parents. Yoshino tells them that she's expecting a third child and that she's already twelve months pregnant in Chapter 110.

    Igaku Nara
The Chief Surgeon at Konoha Hospital.

    Kasuga Nara
An elder of the clan.
  • Brutal Honesty: How can Shikako make the side-effects go away? "Stop being a ninja." She refuses? "Then that wasn't what you meant by 'fixed'."
  • Nothing Is Scarier: An information version. Kasuga is disturbed by Shikako's development with the clan jutsu and admits so to Shikaku.
"Train with her. You'll see. It's not normal. I don't know what she's doing, Shikaku. It's nothing I've ever seen before, and I can't get a word out of her."
  • Old Master: A Nara elder and Shikaku's replacement in teaching the twins new shadow jutsu when their father is unavailable. He was called in to consult on Shikako's state after Jashin's ritual.

    Kofuku Nara
The Head of the Nara clan R&D.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Deconstructed. She is angry when new recruit Shikako gets a reprimand for performing sealing experiments on human subjects. Unfortunately, Shikako starts off getting yelled at for something she was never told was a problem (and the reprimand's language is inaccurate) and ends up holding a grudge.
  • Good is Not Nice: Technically helps Shikako, but does so in a brusque and abrasive manner that really drives a wedge between the two of them.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Shikako is right in pointing out that Kofuku should have made sure Shikako got the R&D "rules and restrictions" introduction before getting her listed as a member and giving her access to their material.
  • Shoot the Messenger: When you filter out Shikako's Unreliable Narrator status it appears that Kofuku had nothing to do with the reprimand the hospital filed other than receiving it and organizing to help Shikako not get hurt by it. But Shikako bears a major grudge against Kofuku for the event and the two have clashed several times since.

    Sembei Nara
An elderly member of the Nara clan.
  • Passing the Torch: She passes the Deer contract on to Shikako. It's implied that she had been waiting for quite a while for an appropriate successor to show up—the Deer contract belongs to the clan and has to stay within it, but most Nara aren't interested in summons that are best used in frontline combat.
  • Retired Badass: Is old enough to remember life before the Hidden Village system was created.
  • Summon Magic: She holds the Deer contract, although she no longer has the chakra reserves to actually perform the summoning jutsu.
