Garbage

Optimistic Captain of the Pluto
Breed: Corgi
"I think this might be the one."

Space explorer on a quest with his crew to find a new suitable planet for humans, captain of the Pluto.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Manifests this traits before his re-training.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite hating Happy and even having a fantasy where he is turned into a regular dog, he can't bring himself to do it himself when Happy is at his mercy.
  • Fatal Flaw: Ambition. Garbage is driven to find a new planet for the humans so he can be his owner Chelsea's hero. This often leads him to make reckless and foolhardy choices, and put his wants ahead of the crew.
  • Fearless Fool: Garbage very rarely shows fear, and when he does the situation is extremely dire.
  • The Hero: He undoubtedly sees himself as a heroic captain, although his actual competence is debatable.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In "Barking Up the Wrong Tree", he gives himself up to the Shrubdubs, hoping it will get them to leave Earth alone. Sadly, they continue their assault.
  • Ironic Name: It doesn't seem like he minds his name. However, as he states in "Spin", without his Captain title, he's "just Garbage".
  • The Leader: Has the highest authority within the Pluto's crew.
  • Loveable Rogue: Garbage is not above going against direct orders from his superiors (even going as far as to betray his entire mission, albeit briefly) if he feels it is for the greater good. While some of his crew have strong opinions of his leadership skills, they are no less loyal to him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He has this reaction after Stardust acts on his claim that he'd do "anything" to be captain again by manipulating his friends' emotions, causing Stella to resign.
  • Nepotism: Season 2 reveals that Garbage was given his position by the Pluto's former captain, Stardust, as he stepped down.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: He uses these on Kira in a attempt to get her to help him. It doesn't work.
  • The Rival: To Captain Happy.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Garbage has a remarkable talent when it comes to making things explode, even when he doesn't aim at that.
    Garbage: Flour is surprisingly flammable!
  • Undying Loyalty: He hardly has an opinion against his owner Chelsea, though Kira was able to convince him briefly that she stopped cared about him.
  • We Used to Be Friends: "Freeze Out" reveals that he and Happy were once best friends, until a misunderstanding and Happy's promotion to captain undermined all that. By the end of the episode, the two manage to reconcile slightly.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Why would Chelsea, or anyone for that matter, call her dog "Garbage"?

    Stella

Stella

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5615.jpeg
Competent tactician of the Pluto
Voiced by : Sarah Chalke
Breed: Sheltie
"No, follow the rules! Follow protocol!"

Stella is a skilled combatant and tactician. She is typically the voice of reason on the Pluto.

  • Action Girl: Stella is one of the most competent fighters in the show, not only this but she is completely willing to attack, even if based only on a hunch.
  • Badass Cape: She's the only one in the Pluto's crew who sports a cape, and is an excellent fighter. She ditches the cape after being promoted to Captain.
  • Cape Snag : Happens to her at least once, but she keeps her cape.
  • Choice of Two Weapons: She can use a blaster, but usually goes with melee weapons.
  • Hard Light: Her signature weapons, a spear and shield, seem to be made of this.
  • The Lancer: Garbage's second-in-command, and a sane, reliable counterpart to his cocky antics. Also, she uses a spear – in other words, a lance.
  • Only Sane Woman: Next to Loaf, she is often the sole dog of reason on the Pluto.
  • Rank Up: She is made the Pluto's new captain at the end of season one.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In "Barking Up the Wrong Tree", she has the opportunity take down the Shrubdubs' ship using a sample of Earth's poisonous upper atmosphere. But she ultimately can't bring herself to kill the Shrubdubs, even in defense of Earth.

    Chonies

Chonies

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5618.jpeg
The Pluto's resident technician
Voiced by : David Lopez
Breed: Chihuahua
"Ha. Technology one, alien zero... Whoa!"

The Pluto's Med/Tech Officer, his personal tool of choice is a forcefield generator.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Just watch the way he fawns over Garbage in "Watch Me". There's also his bungled, Freudian slip of a greeting when they're reunited in "Leave It".
It's good to love you, Captain. I mean, I love to miss you, Captain. I mean, hello, Captain.
  • Barrier Warrior: His main tool of choice is a forcefield.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he's obsessed with his friendship with Garbage, even he called out Stardust for sabotaging a mission to make Garbage look good and get him captain again.
  • Fingerless Hands: Although Chonies canonically has fingers, he lacks them visually.
  • Nude-Colored Clothes: Despite appearing more naked than other dogs, he actually has a pilot suit on that just happens to match his fur color.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: His default expression.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Lampshaded in the altered opening credits of "Settle Down", wherein his puppy self is described as a "Cutie Patootie".
  • The Smart Guy: He's the team's tech/med officer.
  • Smart People Play Chess: He is among the most intelligent on the Pluto when it comes to technology. He apparently plays chess, but seems to lack playmates.

    Nomi

Nomi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5616.jpeg
Excitable pilot of the Pluto
Voiced by : Kimiko Glenn
Breed: Shih Tzu
"Being smart's for idiots!"

Nomi is the brash and childish pilot of the Pluto with a taste for destruction.

  • Ace Pilot: Can dodge obstacles and enemies with contemptuous ease while behind the stick.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She’s definitely the youngest of the group at 14 dog years.
  • Blood Knight: Seems to be enjoying dangerous situations and fighting a little too much.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Well, shooter to be specific.
  • Bold Explorer: Although every member of the Pluto's crew have been on many explorations, Nomi doesn't have any intentions to stop.
  • Cool Big Sis: Considers Kira to be this and looks up to her immensely.
  • Genki Girl: She is almost never not excited.
  • Guns Akimbo: Dual wields a pair of guns.
  • Imagine Spot: Nomi sees Kira in a rather flattering light when the latter frees Garbage.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Most of the time she'll charge into a situation all guns blazing.
  • Trigger-Happy: The most eager to get into a fight and start blasting.

    Ed

Ed

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5617.jpeg
Thieving "diplomat" of the Pluto
Voiced by : Chris Parnell
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
"Well I can't hide it in my room, it's illegal!"

Ed is the Ambassador of the Pluto. He also has a tendency to rob anyone, even his own friends.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his greed and manipulation, Ed genuinely cares for his fellow crewmates.
  • Karma Houdini: No matter what Ed steals, he faces minimal or no consequences.
  • Lovable Rogue: Far more downplayed than Garbage. Unapologetically shady, but no less resourceful.
  • Sticky Fingers: Willing to take nearly anything without a shred of (visible) guilt afterwards. In "Speak", he blatantly admits that he always surveys a planet visited in case he wants to pull a heist later.

    Kira

Kira

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/downloadjpeg_2_4.jpg
Self righteous friend of the Pluto's crew
Voiced by : Debra Wilson
Breed: Canadian Eskimo Dog
"No one's coming to rescue me. I'm just having that dream again. Well, I might as well shoot you."

Kira is a somewhat feral friend to Team Pluto (mostly Garbage) with strong opinions on humans.

  • Arm Cannon: Kira's weapon of choice due to her unopposable thumbs( until after season 1 episode 5, Settle Down).
  • Action Girl: considering she survived on a dangerous planet for over 10 dog years, was able to disable the entire Pluto's crew, and reduce almost every dog on the M-Bark Into regular dogs.
  • Angry Animalistic Growl: Although she Is not the only one to do this, she does It the most. (Justified as she Is a genetically enhanced dog.)
  • Berserk Button: Chonies presses this twice when discussing her purple fur, implying that she wasn't always that way.
  • Battle Cry: In Here, Girl! Kira lets out a feral yell before attacking a wild alien.
  • Back for the Finale: After being absent for the majority of season two, she returns in a big way in "Barking Up the Wrong Tree".
  • Big Bad Slippage: While she was a misanthrope since her introduction, Kira genuinely grew into a valuable and welcomed ally to the Pluto crew. However, her "dogs over humans" mentality, combined with her manipulation of Garbage's uncertainties about Chelsea, becomes far more pronounced after Garbage nearly sacrifices the lives of his crew to try and save a life seed in "Speak".
  • Former Bigot: Kira, for much of the show, despised humans and believed anyone who said otherwise is "too human." By the end of season 1 she learns her lesson.
  • Freudian Excuse: Being trapped on a dangerous planet for 10 dog years thinking she was betrayed by humans Is both the reason for and the excuse for her questionable acts.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Her time away from humans has soured her opinion of them, believing her own human has completely given up on her.
  • I Choose to Stay: Kira decides she wishes to stay on the Ghost Planet. Until her broken arm forces her to leave.
  • Kick the Dog: Downplayed Kira decides to shoot the Pluto's crew thinking they are simply figments of her Imagination.
  • Keeping the Handicap: Kira decides she doesn't want to gain opposable thumbs. ( Until Settle Down.)
  • Lethal Chef: Downplayed, although it is unknown how good of a cook Kira Is, the food she did make was considered disgusting. Then again, she spent a few of her dog years on her own before the Pluto found her by accident.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her time stranded on a far-off planet has not only turned her fur purple somehow, but also hardened her survival skills. She is able to go toe-to-toe with Stella and Councilor Duchess.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her after what occurs in the latter half of Season 1.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite adjusting back at the M-Bark, she slowly believes that it's not worth it for dogkind to help humans in finding a new planet. She temporarily rallies Garbage to help her find a world exclusively for dogs and soon turns heel to do it herself.

    Loaf

Loaf

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5619.jpeg
Stressful Surveillance Officer of the Pluto
Breed: Bulldog
"Congratulations on... not... dying!"

Loaf is the navigator of the Pluto. He possesses an unhealthy amount of stress for his teams' antics despite mostly residing and working aboard the M-Bark.

  • Cowardly Lion: In "Let There Be Loaf", he finds the courage to fend off a band of space pirates who seek to take the M-Bark for themselves.
  • Mission Control: One of the SOs on the M-Bark, he is tasked with assisting Garbage's team.
  • Nervous Wreck: There is hardly a moment where he's not panicking. Then again, he has to constantly put up with the Pluto team, specifically Garbage, since he shares responsibility for their safety.
  • What Is This Feeling?: He is not accustomed to not being stressed.

    Pepper

Pepper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5620.jpeg
Stella's Second-in-command
Voiced by : Stephanie Beatriz
Breed: Black Labrador Retriever
I don't need to trust you. With my technology, there's no behavior I can't predict.

Following Stella's promotion to captain of the Pluto, Pepper was brought in as the new tactical officer following a requested transfer from the Neptune. She is quite diligent but she is overly cautious on the probability of every event around her.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Pepper actually makes a brief appearance in the season one finale, albeit as a normal dog.
  • Hard Light: Like Stella before her, she uses a weapon and a shield that seem to be comprised of this, only her weapon of choice is a sword.
  • Not So Stoic: Expresses little emotion, focusing solely on the mission. If she ever loses composure or panics, then something is off, especially if she can't anticipate it. She tends to smile now and then.
  • Statuesque Stunner: By far the tallest of the entire Pluto crew, or nearly any other dog aboard the M-Bark.
  • The Strategist: Much of her purpose as the new Tactical Officer is to gather data needed to calculate the chances of success with minimal risk.

    Stardust

Stardust

Voiced by: John DiMaggio
Breed: Scottish Terrier

The original captain of the Pluto.

  • Astral Projection: Despite being galaxies away, he can use his mental abilities to manifest himself as a hologram-like form.
  • Emotion Control: He left the Pluto to study under some "star monks", learning how to move the stars to manipulate the emotions of other.
  • God Complex: Was noted by both the Dog Council and his star mentors to suffer a massive god complex, which factored into them kicking him out of their groups.
  • It's All About Me: His outrage over Garbage losing his captain decision seems based more on being angry that his decision to make Garbage his successor was countermanded.
  • Jerkass: While friendly with Garbage, he was less so with others, to the point of manipulating the rest of the Pluto crew's emotion in a scheme to give Garbage back his captain position.
  • Mentor Archetype: He served as this for Garbage, believing that he had it what it took to be captain, and encouraging his ambition.
