This is a Stock Phrase said, often by the Only Sane Man or Deadpan Snarker, when they've just heard about the stupid or outlandish Zany Scheme. In some cases, it is not even a scheme that they are snarking at, but the sheer idiocy of their world. Compare My God, You Are Serious!, which may follow it if said Only Sane Man actually believed that the person in question was kidding. See also Is This a Joke?.

It may also be a reaction to something bad happening, making it somewhere between Oh, Crap! and This Is Gonna Suck. Conversely, it may be a reaction to the characters being challenged by a ridiculously weak opponent... possibly leading to a reveal that the opponent isn't so weak after all.

• The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You: Rentarou's reaction to getting a Love at First Sight shock from his cousin, Chiyo Iin.
• Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.: This is the reaction that Maple's friends have any time she, through her own naivete, ends up coming up with another Game-Breaker technique without trying.
• Faye in Cowboy Bebop yells this at the end of her backstory when she learns the doctor she had started to fall for has saddled her with a massive debt in addition to her huge health care bill.
• Digimon Tamers: Although he doesn't say it, Henry Wong's tone oozes this trope when he sees a digivice appear in his little sister Suzie's hand while the latter is talking to Antylamon, one of the digimon Devas, and he realizes what that means.
• Dragon Ball Super:
  • Dragon Ball Super Copy-Vegeta Arc: At the end of the arc, Vegeta realizes with horror that the antidote that he used to keep himself alive resembled a pacifier and hence, by sucking on it and looking like a baby, his pride was ruined.
  Vegeta: You're kidding me! That's what a pacifier is?!
  Goku: You really didn't know?
  Vegeta: OF COURSE I DIDN'T! I'LL NEVER PUT IT IN MY MOUTH EVEN IF I'VE BEEN DYING!
  • Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero: Piccolo has this reaction to the fact that Bulma uses the Dragon Balls for menial wishes like younger-looking skin and a curvier behind. The reason they even summoned Shenron in the first place is to grant Piccolo a power boost to deal with the Gamma Androids, making the situation even more incredulous to him.
• Dr. STONE: A major Running Gag is Senku listing some new technology they need to make. The primitive people of the Stone World are always impressed, while the revived modern people are always gobsmacked by how Senku is suggesting recreating technology with little more than stone tools. One of his first inventions is a cell phone—before he's even started on agriculture.
• During the "Tachicomatic Days" section of "SA: A Modest Rebellion – ANDROID AND I" in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the Tachicoma utters this when it looks up to see a huge tank about to land on it.
• My Hero Academia: During the School Trip Arc, Mina Ashido has a huge one after Aizawa tells her and a few other students(Kirishima, Sero, Sato and Kaminari) they'll be having additional lessons with him due to failing exams. It's so ridiculously over the top that it has to be seen to be believed.
• Naruto: The title character and Sasuke say this in a filler episode when they see Kakashi is wearing a mask even in a hot spring.
• One Piece:
  • Crocodile uses this phrase after witnessing Luffy's idea to fight him, which included him swallowing a barrel of water to protect it since water cancels out his Nigh-Invulnerability of being able to turn into sand to evade attacks.
  • Then there's a more comical example in the Skypiea arc. Faced with a choice of four doors, Luffy says after they've entered that it may be like a game; pick the right door, you get a prize, and pick the wrong one... "then you fall off the island". Usopp panics, as the island they're on is 10,000 meters in the air, and Sanji dismisses it as absurd. Then they reach the end of the tunnel... and find that while the other three paths go straight forward, theirs plunges straight down, out of sight beneath clouds. Amidst the Wild Takes, Usopp says this line.
  • Between Water 7 and Enies Lobby, Franky fights new CP9 agent Nero on the Sea Train's roof. When Nero realizes that Franky's weak spot is his back, what is Franky's countermeasure? He lies down on his back on the train roof. And he's smug about it.
    Nero: That's...that's so stupid, I don't even have a comeback.
  • Another comical example from the Enies Lobby arc. When the Straw Hats and Franky manage to make it to the heart of the bad guys' lair to rescue their kidnapped friend, one of their adversaries, Fukuro, shows up to inform them that their friend is wearing Sea Prism Stone handcuffs, which are not only unbreakable but serve as a Power Nullifier for her. The only way to remove them is with the key, which he shows them. Then literally everyone has this reaction when he informs them that his key might not be the right one.
  • Played for Drama in the Marineford arc, where Admiral Aokiji says this word for word after witnessing Luffy use his Conqueror's Haki to knock out a good portion of the battlefield. At that point, Aokiji and several other marines have openly acknowledged Luffy as a dangerous future element, but it is that moment that makes them realize how truly high his ceiling is. After that, the Marines start not only prioritizing Luffy's death to be equal to if not outright above Ace's own execution, but also prioritizing over Whitebeard.
• One-Punch Man: Bang has an extremely flat "Are you kidding me." when Elder Centipede regenerates after he and Bomb hit it with their Ultimate Attack.
• Anytime you hear the phrase "Joudan ja nai wa yo!" screamed (in Ranma ½, particularly by Akane) is basically this, as it literally translates into you "You've got to be kidding (or joking with) me!"
• Sonic X: In "An Enemy in Need", this is Amy's reaction to Knuckles when he, having once again been tricked into believing Eggman will change his ways, saves Eggman from her:
  Amy: Knuckles, you have got to be kidding me! How many more times are you gonna fall for Eggman's tricks?!
• The Summer You Were There
  • In Chapter 14, Seri says this verbatim while reading an apology letter that Ruri received from Shizuku, who bullied Ruri in elementary school. Seri's use of this phrase and her remarks indicate that she has not accepted Shizuku's apology.
  • In Chapter 20 and 21, Shizuku goes to Kaori's house to get a book that Kaori wants. In the process, Shizuku meets Kaori's younger sister Shiori, who blames Shizuku for Kaori(who suffers from a chronic respiratory illness) overexerting herself so much that she ended up in the hospital. Shiori initially insists on taking the book to Kaori herself, but allows Shizuku to do so. When a typhoon prevents Shizuku from visiting Kaori in the hospital, Shizuku calls Kaori to tell her about the visit to her house, choosing not to mention Shiori's hostility toward her, and says this phrase when Kaori tells her that Shiori thinks that Shizuku's a nice person.
• In the manga version of Tiger Mask Mr. X has a massive one when his higher-ups at Tiger's Cave send him to their Paris underground wrestling circle to recruit their champion and sic him on Tiger Mask... and finds Tiger Mask there to fight. He nearly faints at the sheer absurdity of the situation, before finally processing what he's seeing and that Tiger Mask is just the man who'd try it.
• Ryuuji in the Festival Arc of Toradora!, when he finds out Taiga's father won't be coming to see her in any of the school's activities.
• Havia's reaction in Heavy Object on realizing that the base his team is infiltrating is guarded by an army of gun-wielding trained monkeys.
• In Yuri is My Job!, Sumika sits down with her friend Nene and vents about how Kanoko has an unrequited love for her best friend Hime, a love Kanoko believes will never be reciprocated. Sumika finds this pitiful and asserts that she'd never let Kanoko be in such a state. Nene lets off an incredulous "You're joking," before remarking what she's just realized- that Sumika is in love with Kanoko.

Asian Animation

• In "It's the Birth of Happy S." from Happy Heroes, this is Big M.'s reaction to Little M. pointing out that, according to their instruction manual, he may have used the Jixie Stones as ammo improperly.
  Big M.: How come nothing's exploding out there?!
  Little M.: Oh! There's more, sir! [reads from the instruction manual for the Jixie Stones/Super Duper Machine Rocks] "Please do not attempt to use the methods listed above. Never ever try it or face the consequences."
  Big M.: Oh, you're kidding me!

Card Games

• In Munchkin Bites, the text for Were-Muskrats is "+4 vs. Werewolves, who cannot BELIEVE this...".

Comic Books

• In Black Magick #9, Alex shares the results of her scrying spell with Rowan. When Rowan sees that the ashes from the ritual formed Aira's sigil, she immediately blames them for what's going on, but Alex counters that the spell actually revealed Aira isn't involved, which Rowan angrily refuses to accept. All the events of the past week catch up to her and she breaks down before Alex can finish explaining, with Alex then convincing the mentally and physically exhausted Rowan to hit the hay.
• Dan In Space: Dan says this before getting sucked out into space via a hallway that's been sliced in half.
• In Marvel Comics' Exiles: Day of Now and Then, Blink says this when Sabertooth shows her Weapon X's version of the Timebreakers' Timebroker's hologram: a beauty of a woman.
• In Legion of 3 Worlds, this is Superboy-Prime's reaction upon discovering the 31st Century's Superman Museum.
• In Luke Cage: Hero for Hire, Luke is hired by Doctor Doom to hunt down rogue Doombots who hid themselves in the US. After the job was done, Doom left the UN without paying him. A royally pissed-off Cage took a vehicle from the Fantastic Four and traveled all the way to Latveria to personally get the $200 bucks Doom owes him. Doom is both shocked and outraged, especially since he was in the middle of dealing with a revolution.
  Doom: You came all the way here for that!? A paltry $200!!!? You are crazy!
• Mystique once burgled the home of the "Richest Man in the World" and stole the box containing his "most treasured possession"; opening the box, she found that it contained... a Spider-Man costume. She immediately invoked this trope.
• People have often said this about The Punisher. He himself has said it only twice in Garth Ennis' run in The Punisher MAX:
  • In "In the Beginning", Frank has to fight Pittsy the mob enforcer for over a dozen pages. The nutcase manages to blow off one of Frank's ribs, then attempts to tear a lung out through the hole. Frank retaliates by throwing him out a fifth-story window onto a metal picket fence. Then jumping out after him and Goomba Stomping him, driving three fence spokes three inches through his torso. Two pages later, Pittsy not only manages to tear the fence loose, but also goes looking for Frank with it sticking out of him.
    Frank Castle: You have to be fucking kidding me. [gives Pittsy a Boom, Headshot! with a shotgun at arm's reach] Next step's a reflex action. So's the next one. Got to be. [Gross-Up Close-Up of Pittsy's shotgunned face]''
  • In "The Long, Cold Dark", after Frank has captured his nemesis Barracuda, shot, beaten, and electrocuted him^*His balls, specifically, wired to a car battery. For over an hour. Well, Barracuda did kidnap and threaten Castle's infant daughter hoping to piss him off enough to put up a good fight - Be Careful What You Wish For, indeed., and left him wrapped in iron chains in the boot of his truck while he attended to other matters. It's all too much for 'Cuda, who just snaps, breaks the chains through sheer strength and barrels out.
    The Punisher: You have got to be fucking kidding me. [Barracuda arms himself] …was the thought that came to mind.
• In Robin War, Damian Wayne meets the new Batman:
  James Gordon Batman: I'm Batman.
  [long Beat]
  Damian: You have got to be kidding me.
• Superman:
  • In the third issue of Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade, Supergirl uses a meteor rock to try to gain new powers, but most of them are hilariously useless.
    Supergirl: You gotta…be kidding. The power to overcook waffles...? How is that even a power?
  • War World, Superman has this reaction when Mongul — who is blackmailing him into retrieving an artifact — reveals where the Crystal Key is:
    Mongul: Why, of course — It is hidden on the fifth planet from the sun of the star-system Cygnus! Are you at all familiar with the system?
    Superman: Mongul, you've got to be kidding! The fourth planet from the sun in that system is New Mars — the home of my former Justice League buddy, J'onn J'onzz!
    Mongul: [grinning] Yes… I know.
    Superman: [thinking] Yeah… I'll just bet you do!
  • In The Killers of Krypton, Supergirl travels through the galaxy in search of several hidden data stones recording evidence of a genocyde perpetrated by a secret galactic organization. Then, while Kara is resting by a lakeside on planet Tavaar, Krypto casually digs up one of the super-hidden Stones. Kara blurts out a "Are you joking?" line, and concludes her universe is weird.
  • Superman vs. Shazam!: At the start of their fight, Captain Marvel throws a chunk of a wall at Superman, who asks him if he is serious.
    Superman: Throwing rubble? You've got to be joking! I can take the full impact of a nuclear blast— I've dived to the depths of a sun going nova— I've battled creatures big enough to devour whole planets! And you try to smack me with a brick mudball!
  • In Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom, wherein the titular heroes travel to one alien jungle, Supergirl says the line verbatim when she is attacked by a giant, flying green squid as she is searching for food.
• In Uncanny Valley (2024), this is Peggy's reaction when she learns that Oliver jumped off a bridge because his two classmates told him to.
  Peggy: You jumped off a bridge?! Because all your friends were jumping off too?! Oliver, I... I didn't even think that was a real thing kids did! Are you kidding me?! That's so generic!
• The Walking Dead: Michonne's reaction to meeting Ezekiel, a man who acts like the literal king of his community and owns a pet tiger.
• In one issue of Young Justice, an alien race challenges the team to... a game of baseball. Superboy and Wonder Girl's reactions say it all.

  Cassie: Okay, that's it. I'm joining the Titans.
• During Charlie Huston's run on Moon Knight, Taskmaster invokes this trope where a failed attempt on Marc's life ends with Samuels the butler aiming a blunderbuss inches from his face.
  "Oh, come on!"
• Lumberjanes: Jen doesn't really take the reveal of Diane's divine status well.
  Jen: NO. I REFUSE. I was ready to be okay with monsters and dinosaurs and jackelopes but I am NOT OKAY with you being Ancient Greek gods of lore!!
• Spider-Man: Anna Maria has this reaction twice in the Superior Octopus oneshot. Having moved to San Fransisco to get away from the whole mess of her boyfriend being Doc Ock in Peter Parker's body and then sacrificing himself, when she learns that SF suddenly has a new Octopus/Spider hero who talks like Otto, she says "You have got to be kidding me". Then she looks over at her slightly weird new colleague who looks a bit like Peter, and says "You have got to be kidding me."

• Bloom County: One storyline was kicked off when Oliver, who was Black and Nerdy but not knowledgable about the world in general, found out about apartheid in South Africa from his father, and his response was, "You have GOT to be pulling my leg".

• Ace Combat: The Equestrian War: This is Rainbow Dash's reaction upon seeing Canterlot being besieged by the griffins.
• Advice and Trust: This is Rei's reaction when she realizes that Kaworu is being turned on by her yelling at and threatening him.
• Alabaster: The Doomed Session: Frequently said by Vamuin (usually before Ginneo).
• Avengers: Infinite Wars: When Peter Parker (from a variation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) becomes caught up in the events of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he basically elicits this reaction from Spider-Man Noir when he mentions that Noir's time is "getting close to the Second World War".
• Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium: Happens a few times, but never as humorously as when Hawke reacts to a fact that Varric casually drops during their conversation.
  Hawke: I've been in Skyhold for almost a fortnight and you never thought to tell me that Cullen has a girlfriend?
• Jack reacts this way in Big Trouble in Old England when he first sees the flying boat he and the others use to get to Voldemort's headquarters.
• The Bolt Chronicles: Rhino expresses his extreme skepticism to Mittens in “The Funkmeister” when she claims to have imaginary medical conditions that prevent her from dancing with him.
  Mittens: [with a weak chuckle] Um — oh! Oh that! I’ve… uhh… I’ve been sick with a nasty virus lately. And it’s been makin’ my foot break out in spasms. Maybe it’s Tom Jones Tremens, or Snu, or something.
  Rhino: [snickering, looking dubiously askance at Mittens] You’re puttin’ me on! What’s ‘Snu,’ pussycat?
• Cheshire (Miraculous Ladybug): Marinette/Cheshire's reaction when Kim blows his secret identity as King Monkey, making her wonder what Master Fu was thinking to give Kim - one of her bullies - a Miraculous.
• Chaldea Evil Incorporated!: Perry the Platypus and Olga Marie are both flabbergasted when they see that Dr. Heinz Doofensmirtz and Touko Aozaki are taking a liking to each other in chapter 4. Olga takes up a bottle of old expensive wine at the idea that the Red is in love with one of her biggest headaches.
• In Child of the Storm, this is Wolverine's reaction when the Winter Soldier ends their fight by whipping out a thermite-tipped RPG.
• In Conquering Eostia, one of the rebel leaders is incredulous when he learns of the curse upon one of the seven Princess Knights: anyone who attempts to rape her will instead "have their life drained by her holy buttocks". Likewise, anyone who hears the proposed "Sex Empire" referred to as "the Cuntry" universally has a Lame Pun Reaction.
• In Crimson and Noire, Apex (who came from a time when she and Cottontail had recently got their Miraculous) has this reaction in chapter 31 when she learns from Crimson that their future selves had to help Crimson and Noire a few months prior against Speedstar because Crimson tried to get in between the akuma and Noire, which is the exact same reason she and Cottontail came to help the heroes against Zombizou.
• In Deal with a Devil, Harry Potter asks Lash if she's screwing with him when he sees that Lockhart's test comprises entirely of questions about the man himself.
• Played for Drama in The Defeated when Ichigo's offered a place in Soul Society, despite them having killed almost all of his friends, given Orihime to Kurotsuchi for experimentation, and tortured him for the last several days. He states this trope verbatim out of sheer rage that they'd dare to make such an offer after what they've done.
• In A Different Path, Kirito says this when Gilgamesh blocks one of his attacks by pulling a Mirror Force card out of his pocket and bringing it to life.
• Fairytale of Doom: In chapter 17, this is Lucy's reaction when Levy suggests that the former was able to pick up Prince Phillip's Shield of Virtue might be because Virtue can also mean "virgin." In other words, Lucy was able to pick it up because she was still a virgin, tying back to her frustration of being casted as a princess destined for love.
  Lucy: You have got to be kidding me. I finally get a superpower in this fairytale... and it's the physical manifestation of the fact that for the last two years, the guy I liked didn't see me more than a friend? Why is everything in this goddamn world about romance?!
• Fate/Harem Antics:
  • Holy Grail Wars tend to be pretty weird in general, but this one is worse than usual because no one realizes that the Grail is being controlled by Iri, who died in the previous War, and is now using the new War as an excuse to get her son Shirou a harem. Not only is every Master and Servant a beautiful woman, but many of the Masters were contracted without their explicit permission (which is odd), and several aren't even mages (which is really odd). And then because Iri decided to summon a couple extra Servants, she accidentally left the door open for more Servants to be summoned, resulting in three completely unknown classes being summoned, ending in a total of twelve Servants (thirteen if you count Gilgamesh) in a system that is only supposed to have seven. Rin, one of the few who knows what a Grail War is actually supposed to be like, gives up when a Master shows up with a mecha-suit of Powered Armor with laser arms.
    Rin: This Grail War is completely insane.
  • Caren does this when Shielder, who knew Saber in life, tells her that Saber really is King Arthur.
  • Rin and Archer/Drake do this when they run into Nobunaga, who introduces herself as Servant Gunner.
  • During their fight, Drake does this when she notices Gunner is able to accurately shoot at her without even looking at her.
• After seeing how strong but stupid Luffy is in Fighting for the Future, Mr. 5 asks if he and Miss Valentine are really about to be killed by someone who doesn't understand gravity.
• The Flash Sentry Chronicles: Flash says this when he sees Rainbow Dash faking being injured in "Rainbow Falls".
• Friendship Is Aura: Shining Armor says this word for word when Luna goes to confront Tartarus's Mooks that are attacking Canterlot, in the middle of him devising a defensive strategy.
• In Guardians, Wizards, and Kung-Fu Fighters, Cornelia's initial reaction to finding out that Elyon is the lost Princess is to faint. After she recovers and it's confirmed that she heard right, she follows up with this trope.
• Harry and the Shipgirls has this as the all-around reaction for the reason they were given^note Apparently, part of the conditions for the Dementors in Azkaban serving as the wardens was that anyone placed in the Maximum Security Wing was Azkaban's forever for the Dementors attempting to Kiss Sirius Black, in spite of him having been acquitted for betraying the Potters and killing a crowd of people.
  Dumbledore: “Please tell me that this is some sick joke, Amelia. That what is in front of me does not exist.”
• In Harry Potter and the Fate We Make, Harry says this almost word-for-word when Dumbledore shows him Trelawney's first prophecy.
• In Harry Potter and the Prince of Slytherin, this is Lucian Bole's reaction when both Bludgers target Harry during the second year Gryffindor/Slytherin Quidditch game.
  Lucian: Oh you are shitting me!
• In Harry Potter and the Puppet of Time, this is Draco's reaction to learning that his father betrothed him to Daphne Greengrass in exchange for the "Eternal friendship and staunch support of House Greengrass"... despite the fact that both families were already allied with each other.
• Hero Chat: Chloe does this multiple times, as she is a Secret Secret-Keeper who has deduced everyone else's identities, and they are so bad at not telling each other details of their private lives (but they still don't make the connection). Eventually, she gets fed up and tricks Ladybug into letting her do an identity reveal for the team. Then the rest of the team starts screaming as they realize the ridiculous situation they are in.
  Marinette: [to Adrien] Do you have any idea? Do you have any idea how much confusion and heartbreak you've caused me because of this? We are in a goddamn lovesquare!
  Alya: [headdesk] Oh my god it's a lovesquare.
• In Hogyoku ex Machina, Kenpachi laughs and says this when Ichigo's memory of Aizen turning into a butterfly is shown.
• A couple of examples can be found in the Infinity Crisis spin-off stories:
  • The line is said verbatim by Captain Marvel in Gamma Relations when the Leader sends his pink humanoids to fight the Avengers.
  • Not explicitly stated, but basically sums up the Defenders' reactions in In Hand and Foot when they see four human-sized turtles with martial arts training taking on the Foot.
• Upon learning Barriss Offee isn't being punished in I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Anakin loudly demands to know what the Jedi Council is thinking to sentence Ahsoka to death but not punish the one who committed and framed her for the crimes she was on trial for.
• The Intricacies of Magical Etiquette:
  Daphne: If there's nothing else you can offer, I suppose sexual favors would be acceptable.
  Harry: Very funny. [Daphne stares at him] Wait, you are joking, right?
• Invader Zim: A Bad Thing Never Ends: This is Gaz's word-for-word reaction when Iggins is revealed to be the one piloting Aldrich's Humongous Mecha in Chapter 17.
• Jackie Chan Adventures: Olympian Journey:
  • Eris can't believe that she's the logical one during her conversation with Aphrodite's host.
  • Captain Black's response to finding out that the Six-Eared Macaque has gained Poseidon's powers.
• In Kage, this is Jade's reaction to the giant rose Cornelia creates to defeat the Knights of Vengeance (while she's hanging from said rose's stem).
  Jade: A GIANT FREAKING ROSE?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
• The Karma of Lies: Lila has this reaction when she realizes that Adrien — who knows she's presently conning their classmates — is typing the password to one of his family's private bank accounts in front of her. Adrien's complete lack of common sense about the situation gets called out by the police when he tries to report it.
• In Kingdom Shinigami, Toshiro Hitsugaya gets really annoyed when the people of The Land of Dragons don't bat an eyelash at Sora, Donald, and Goofy, yet regard him with suspicion because he's Japanese.
• Lucky Balance:
  Lucius: Actually to be precise, Voldemort had 7 Horcruxes and you destroyed one of them.
  Harry: Seven? Seven?! And we have to destroy them all? You have got to be fucking kidding me!
• Luffy's Renewed Adventure:
  • Miss Valentine has this reaction when Luffy uses Moonwalk to follow her into the air, she floating with her Kilo-Kilo Fruit powers.
  • Many present have this reaction when Vivi accidentally says Crocodile's name, either because of her carelessness or the fact that they're up against a Warlord.
• My Hero Academia: Unchained Predator: Upon being told by Sayaka that they can't do anything until the no-fly order is lifted, Mera ends up having a Rage Breaking Point while being Forced to Watch the Slayer tear apart the Steel Sabers.
  Mera: Oh? Great! That’s just perfect! Well while we’re sitting here twiddling our thumbs, Arnold Leatherface Schwarzenegger is turning I-Island into the set of a Quentin Tarantino movie!

  • In the Dark World arc, this is the Nameless Passenger's reaction to finding out Derpy is the new Element of Loyalty.

• Multiple parties have this reaction in Tony's Girl when they learn that "Team Cap" successfully took out a weapons smuggler, but in doing so, sank a freighter in the Panama Canal, aka the most important maritime route in the entire world. The former SHIELD agents helping Team Cap outright demand to know how they did a worse job than regular police officers would have done.
• Top of the Line (Editor-Bug): Tallest Red is less than pleased to see Zim show up at the SIR Unit tournament.
• True Potential:
  • Naruto had a lot of expectations regarding his first mission as a genin, hoping it would be something important. Instead, his first mission consists of pulling weeds, which makes him shout "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
  • In the Omake from Chapter 17, Kurotsuchi tells Shikamaru that she told his teammates her plan to keep him awake that night (as revenge for when Shikamaru refused to play at least one card game with her because he was too tired) and, as a result, said teammates are sleeping in other rooms. His response is to say this trope word for word.
  • Anko has this reaction upon seeing the bill after treating Naruto to ramen. Teuchi mentions to her that Iruka and the Third Hokage had similar reactions.
    • Later, when Anko is confronting Naruto about having to blow a week's worth of pay on ramen, Naruto says that he tried to eat less than usual since he didn't want Anko to spend too much money on him. A rather shocked Anko tries to ponder how Naruto can eat so much ramen and, more importantly, pay for it with his Genin earning.
  • Hanabi looks at her sensei Naruto in horror and tells him "... Please tell me you are kidding." when he brings up the possibility of once again doing the D-rank mission of finding a cat named Tora.
  • In Chapter 87, Onoki growls "You have got to be shitting me!" after learning about the Kamizuru Brothers being murdered by ROOT agents.
  • Kabuto says "You have GOT to be shitting me right now?" to Danzō when the latter reveals why the former was considered a liability to ROOT.
• In Warriors of the World: Soldiers of Fortune, Samaroh says a deadpan one right after he witnesses a gigantic monster get hit with an equally massive fireball in the chest, get hurled into the wall of a house at top speed from the impact, and immediately get to its feet.
  "You're joking."
• In White Knights and Dark Lords, Xander says this almost word-for-word when Mr. and Mrs. Weasley flinch when he mentions Voldemort. He has a similar reaction later on when Voldemort uses demons and vampires as part of his army.

• White Sheep (RWBY): Happens pretty constantly due to all the ridiculous stuff happening.
  • Blake in particular can't believe that the various love lives of her friends are even more bizarre and complicated than her smutty books.
  • Yang gets one when the team helps Blake against her psycho ex-boyfriend, only to find that her psycho ex-girlfriend is there as well.
    Yang: Sheesh, why do you even read that smut of yours if your life is like this?
• In Yugioh EQG: Shadow Gates, Flash Sentry has this reaction when Sombra is explaining his story to him and Cold Steel, and the reason he betrayed Flash's parents. Flash interrupts his story partway to say this, calling Sombra out on his motivation basically being he was angry that Flash's mother Misty Vail married Trail Blazer instead of him, seeing it as a betrayal by both of them.
  Flash: You've gotta be kidding me! That's the stupidest reason to turn evil ever!
• In the fourth chapter of The SuperStarr Chronicles, Scott Summers doesn't outright say it, but his reaction is basically this when he learns Clara Creed is the sister of Sabertooth.
• Gendo has this reaction in The Rainbow Connection when he finds out that his son Shinji has been raised by Miss Piggy for the past nine years.
• In Olive's Last Partner, Olive asks Oscar exactly what the Blobisites, who are cousins of blobs, are parasites of, as is their punny namesake. He tells her they're parasites of boiler systems, to which she responds aptly.
  Olive: You're joking.
  Oscar: Nope! They like to get in the pipes and grow until they fill the whole network, sucking up all the warmth and blocking all the water as they do. [begins to make sucking and gurgling sounds]
• Twilight Sparkle, You're Being Ridiculous: Played for Laughs. Celestia laughs like crazy over Twilight thinking she was about to be banished and exiled over her outburst at her brother's wedding.

• Big Hero 6: Deadpan Snarker GoGo says this verbatim when she sees Fred's room.
• In The Book of Life, this is María's reaction when it's revealed why Chakal is attacking San Angel; he's after one of Joaquín's medals. What she doesn't know is that said medal is the Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants the wearer near-immortality.
  María: (to Joaquín) All this… is about a stupid medal? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
• Cars:
  • Cars: Lightning says this after he learns Doc has sentenced him to community service and he has to mend the road before he can leave Radiator Springs.
  • Cars 3: Lightning when he and Cruz train at Fireball Beach in one of the failed attempts when Cruz stopped because she didn't want to hit a crab.
• Frozen: Kristoff deconstructs Princess Anna's Thinks Like a Romance Novel mindset when he hears about her quickly agreeing to a Fourth-Date Marriage with Prince Hans, a guy whom she just met, and why that was not a wise decision. Kristoff is proven right at the end, as Hans turns out to be a manipulative and backstabbing Gold Digger who used Anna as a pawn to get closer to Arendelle's throne. Having realized the lesson, Anna takes it slowly with Kristoff.
• The LEGO Movie:
  Batman: Not to be the downer, but we're sitting in a stupid couch floating in the middle of the ocean. It's not like a giant pirate boat is going to come out of nowh-MY-GOSH-

• In Turning Red, this is Mei's reaction to her parents' news that her transformation is a hereditary thing. In the trailer, she uses the trope name almost word for word before attempting to shred the family tapestry with her claws. In the movie proper, her words are different but the sentiment is the same:

• In Big Daddy, this is Sonny's reaction when Julian dances to a sing-along video about a kangaroo.
  Sonny: I can't take this shit, are you serious?
• Bon Cop, Bad Cop uses it as the villain's last words.
• In The Cabin in the Woods, Hadley has wanted to see a Merman in action for years. When the stable of monsters is unleashed inside the facility, it's a Merman that eventually attacks him. His last words, upon seeing his attacker, are a disbelieving "Oh, come on!"
• Child's Play 3, when Chucky scares a man whom he was just about to stab into having a heart attack. "Oh you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me."
• In The Dark Knight Rises, Selina Kyle's reaction to Batman's "no guns" rule.

• Single White Female: Said word for word by Allie when Heddy emerges from her treatment at the salon with a haircut and color identical to hers. Until now, she's been dismissing the things about Heddy that make her uneasy, but this forces her to realize that the situation is becoming dangerous.
• In Star Trek (2009), this is McCoy's reaction after Kirk becomes Acting Captain following getting Spock compromised and relieving himself of duty. As they point out, Pike did make Kirk Acting First Officer.

• Star Wars:
  • In Rogue One, Saw Gerrera's forces take Jyn Erso and her friends on a Blindfolded Trip — including Chirrut Imwe, who points out how redundant the blindfold is for him.

  • In The Force Awakens, as Finn has turned his back on the First Order and helped Poe Dameron escape, they have this exchange in the stolen TIE Fighter:

• Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: John Connor has this reaction upon finding out that there is an "anti-Terminator Terminator" in the form of a T-X.

• The Thing (1982): Also doubles as a moment of levity in an otherwise horrific scene, in which the Thing-mimic of Norris detaches its head, sprouts spider legs, and scuttles away (with the head upside-down!). Made even funnier when you realise later that Palmer, the man who uttered the line is also a Thing.
  Palmer: You gotta be fucking kidding...
• Thir13en Ghosts: Dennis has this reaction in the opening scene when he sees the bait they're using to draw out the Juggernaut.
  Dennis: A truck full of blood?! You gotta be shitting me!
• Ticket to Paradise: David mutters "you gotta be kidding me" after seeing his hated ex-wife arrive at the seat next to him on two separate occasions: at Lily's graduation and on the flight to Bali.
• Top Gun: Maverick: After they're left stranded in enemy territory, Rooster says "You're not serious." when he realizes Maverick's plan to escape is to steal an F-14 Tomcat from the enemy base. His face says it all.
  Rooster: You've gotta be shitting me. An F-14?
  Maverick: I shot down three MiGs in one of those.
  Rooster: We don't even know if that bag of ass can fly.
  Maverick: (beat) Let's find out.
• Trick 'r Treat does this as a pretty clear homage to The Thing, when Mr. Krieg thinks he has killed the thing that's broken into his house, only to see a severed hand crawling across the floor.
  You gotta be fucking kidding me.
• In Who Framed Roger Rabbit, detective Eddie Valiant is taking pictures of Marvin Acme and Jessica Rabbit supposedly playing pattycake, but when he sees what Marvin and Jessica are actually doing, he exclaims this phrase in a hushed tone. Given this, you can't really blame him for this reaction.^note The film though heavily implies that pattycake is the Toon world's version of sex.

• An oldie but goodie: An eagle eats a worm and takes off flying. The worm suddenly pops out of the eagle's asshole and asks "How high are we?" The eagle says, "About 1,000 feet in the air." The worm says, "You wouldn't shit me, would you?"

• From Harry Potter:
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Dumbledore announces that the Tri-Wizard Tournament is being held at Hogwarts.

  • Although Harry doesn't say this word-for-word, this is basically how he reacts in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when he learns that Cornelius Fudge had tried to gain his support despite having spent a year covering up Voldemort's return and smearing anybody who spoke the truth, including Harry himself.
• Harrow the Ninth: When the God-Emperor finds out that an overzealous staffer tried to offer herself up as a blood sacrifice while preparing his shuttle for launch, he mutters, "For fuck's sake." where she can't hear.
• Nina Tanleven: In The Ghost Let Go, when Nine, her father, and Chris come across a spooky house with the name "B. Smiley" on the mailbox, Chris's reaction is "They've got to be kidding." Nine's snarky reply is "I don't care if Smiley shares the house with Dopey, Doc and Grumpy, as long as they let us in out of this rain."
• This is the Pigeon's reaction, word for word, to the roller coaster in The Pigeon Will Ride the Roller Coaster!, which turns out to be a pathetic little putt-putt affair riding along a straight line, rather than anything really worthy of the name "roller coaster." However, when asked if he wants to go again, he immediately agrees.
• In the Star Wars Legends book Enemy Lines 2: Rebel Stand, Han and Leia are trapped in prison, awaiting what looks to be their final meal before they're shipped off-system to the Yuuzhan Vong. Instead of breakfast, Han's blaster, Leia's lightsaber, and an assortment of other useful items pour through the food tray slot courtesy of a complex plan by R2-D2, and the obligatory line is Han's reaction.
  Leia: This is my favorite prison ever.

• On Big Time Rush, the guys suck up to the daughter of Griffiths, the owner of the record label, assuming she picks which demos her dad signs on as regular acts. She goes along with it for a while before finally admitting her father uses a "unique super-secret weapon" to choose which acts end up becoming stars. The guys, Gustav, and Kelly have a priceless reaction to finding out what it is.
  Gang: A monkey picks the demos?!
• In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Seeing Red", Buffy says this when Warren escapes from her with a jet pack.
• Burn Notice: In "Army of One", when a duped bad guy sees Michael, out of cover and alive.
• In the Cobra Kai episode "Ace Degenerate", when Johnny Lawrence realizes that one of the girls in the car that T-boned his ride is the daughter of his longtime rival Daniel LaRusso, he mutters, "You gotta be kidding me." under his breath.
• Control Z:
  • During Raúl's party, Javier is openly against the hacker's demand that Sofía jump off the roof so that Alex's secret won't be leaked. Sofía ends up obliging, but Javier angrily storms out of the party.
  • Most of the students' furious response when Raúl returns for the first time since his exposure as the hacker.
• Cowboy Bebop (2021). The Callisto Liberation Front use a spore-dispersing device designed for terraforming to turn people into trees. The newsreader reacts thus:

• A common reaction by the contestants when sabotage is revealed in Cutthroat Kitchen. It's also been done by Alton or judges in response to a dish.
• Doctor Who:
  • "Bad Wolf": This is the Ninth Doctor's understandable reaction to waking up in a futuristic version of Big Brother.
    Davina-Droid: You are live on channel forty-four-thousand. Please do not swear.
    The Doctor: You have got to be kidding.
  • "The Age of Steel": This is Pete Tyler's reaction when Mickey drops a rope ladder from the zeppelin he's piloting for Pete, Rose, and the Doctor to escape from the roof of a burning factory.
  • "The Runaway Bride": This is Donna's reaction to seeing the TARDIS flying down a motorway after her.
  • Donna does it again in "The Fires of Pompeii" when it looks like she's about to be a human sacrifice.
  • "Amy's Choice": Rory's reaction when the Doctor tells him the TARDIS heating is off. Except no, it isn't, it's because of the "cold star" the TARDIS is drifting towards.
  • "The Bells of St John": Alexei's reaction when the Doctor uses an anti-gravity motorcycle to ride up the side of a skyscraper.
    Alexei: Seriously? It can do that? It can really, actually do that?
  • "It Takes You Away": Ryan's reaction when he discovers a speaker hidden outside the cottage playing the roars of the "monster" Hanne is so frightened of.
  • "Resolution": The Doctor's reaction, complete with facepalm, when she finds out that UNIT has been suspended, just as she needs their help.
  • While she doesn't say it, the Doctor's facial expression in "War Of The Sontarans" to hearing the Sontarans got involved in the Crimean War partially because their commander wanted to ride a horse screams this.
• Some of the funniest moments on the Steve Harvey episodes of Family Feud is Harvey hearing a contestant give an outrageous answer. He'll spend a few moments mocking them on just how stupid that is...and then that answer is on the board. Harvey's reactions range from just standing in shock to tearing up/throwing away the answer cards and storming off the stage.
• John Crichton on Farscape, more than once. Not always very sensibly either: Once he says "Aeryn, honey, you have got to be kidding me" on the discovery that she objects to serious drug abuse. And no, he wasn't being sarcastic.
• Firefly: In the episode "Jaynestown", though she doesn't say it, this Inara's reaction when she assumes the "hero of Canton" is Mal, only to find out she's way off the mark:
  Inara: I know this man. He just has this idiotic sense of nobility, you know? He can never just let things go. He thinks he's this hard-hearted criminal, and he can be unrelenting...but there's a side to him that's just so-.
  Fess: You mean you actually know Jayne?

• Forever: Said word for word by Jo in the pilot when she sees that the owner of the pocketwatch found on the wrecked subway, caught on video entering the fatal car minutes before the accident, is the weird medical examiner she was just talking to, who hadn't said a word about being on the crashed subway even though he knew she was investigating it.
• Homicide: Life on the Street: This is Munch's reaction when at the liquor license class, the teacher says in addition to making sure he doesn't allow drunks to drive or serve drinks to minors (both of which he's okay with), he also has to make sure not to let people get too drunk, which he thinks goes against the whole point of having a bar.
• Elliot Stabler of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit sometimes reacts this way to the weird cases he deals with, such as the woman who got hammered despite not drinking a drop. She took the alcohol up her... you know....
• The protagonist of the US remake of Life On Mars gives a quiet "No way" upon waking up in the '70s and seeing the World Trade Center still standing.
• M*A*S*H: Hawkeye does a completely non-verbal one in "Tuttle" when Henry asks him to deliver a eulogy on the recently fallen titular soldier — who never existed in the first place.
• Marvel Cinematic Universe:
  • Jessica Jones: Malcolm's response when Inez steals his TV from his apartment. He is forced to chase her down to find her trying to sell his TV at a pawn shop for bus money.
  • The Defenders: Matt's response when he senses Stick's arrival at the Royal Dragon. He makes very clear to Jessica, Luke, and Danny how unhappy he is that his old mentor is popping in to say hello.
  • The Punisher. The reaction from all concerned when Karen Page, Amy Bendix, and Agent Dinah Madani show up one after the other to help Frank Castle escape from hospital, even though he doesn't want to be rescued.
• On Monster Garage, a variation ("You've gotta be kidding me!") was used almost Once an Episode by The Big Schwag during the final challenge.
• Uttered several times by Tom Servo in Mystery Science Theater 3000, usually when witnessing a spectacular Special Effect Failure.
  • The famous moment of the classic episode Cave Dwellers has hero Ator breaking out a modern-day hang glider to invade a castle.
    Tom: Oh, come on!
    Crow: What the....
    Tom: This is a little ridiculous. Okay, so... he kills a deer, he tans the hides, he stretches the skins, he makes an anodized aluminum frame, he learns how to extrude and weld... all in about five minutes, huh? ... learned aerodynamics...

• On NCIS, Tony gets this look whenever he has his eyes on the Girl of the Week, only to find out that she has her eyes on McGee. Or Gibbs.
• Odd Squad:
  • Oscar, Olive, and Otto have this reaction when Oprah tells them that the Featherites have arrived at Precinct 13579. Oprah responds aptly with:
  Oprah: I have a bird nest on my head. Do I look like I'm kidding?
  • In "Night Shift", Olympia says this when she finds out that she's number 539 in line for the tubes and the tube operator on duty is only on number 44.
  • In "Where There's a Wolf, There's a Way", Olympia tells Joy LaFleur that she needs more practice throwing slime at the dragon guarding the special potato of Potatoland in a teasing manner. Otis responds with an aghast "Are you serious?" and Olympia gives him a sly smile in return as the two go back to throwing slime at each other.
  • This is a furious Opal's reaction in "Jeremy" when she returns to the Mobile Unit van for the second time only to find it locked again. She quickly drops her anger when she sees Oswald and Orla trapped in paper-mache.
  • In "The Thrill of the Face", Omar and Orla make a hasty retreat to Oswald's office with a box after Opal becomes turned to stone by the Piedro de Guerrero, hoping it's the box with the Piedro-Reverse-inator gadget. Oswald looks through the box and says that it isn't the right one, causing Omar and Orla to give a unisonant "Are you serious?"
  • From "Odd in 60 Seconds", in response to Orla's disbelief that the Utensiler's younger sister broke into the top-secret Security facility.
    Omar: Are you kidding me right now?
    Orla: Have I ever kidded?
  • Omar has another one of these moments in "Wax On Wax Odd" as Orla tells him that she will return to his cubby every day for the rest of the week and toss stuff to him so he can catch it, over and over again. As he's shown holding a bunch of his souvenirs when Orla leaves, all he can say is, "Are you kidding me?"
  • The Van Computer has this reaction in "Double O Trouble" when a Chicago police officer passing by ends up ticketing the van for illegal parking in Millennium Park, honking the horn at him for added effect.
• The Office: Kevin reacts this way to Jim's declaration that he's single and Pam saying that they're "good friends" at the start of season 4. He's right.
• In an episode of Pawn Stars, Chumlee is spurned by the others for a bar trivia night. For revenge, he recruits sports expert Sean, book expert Rebecca, and historian Mark. Rick's face upon seeing them walk in is entirely this trope.
• In "New Dimensions" from The Orville, this is Kelly Grayson's reaction when she pulls up John LaMarr's file to place a reprimand on it and discovers that he earned some of the highest marks in Union Point's history.
• Power Rangers:
  • Power Rangers Operation Overdrive has this in "Just Like Me" from Black Ranger Will after Sixth Ranger Tyzonn shows up dressed like him.
  • Power Rangers RPM:
    • Dillon reacts this way when he opens up a refrigerator, revealing a cannon primed and ready to blast him—just so Dr. K can prove a point. Tenaya 7 also reacts this way later in the episode when the same fridge cannon is about to blast her and end her All Your Base Are Belong to Us.
    • A later episode has Tenaya utter the line when she sees the ridiculous-looking Nozzle-Bot that Venjix created.
  • Power Rangers Dino Fury: Lord Zedd yells this in frustration after the umpteenth time someone teleports away when he tries to fight them.
• Psychopath Diary: In-woo watches in disbelief as Dong-sik Screams Like a Little Girl, jumps backward, collides with several barrels, and ends up on the floor.
  In-woo: What? Are you kidding me?
• Towards the end of the Quantum Leap episode "Running for Honor", despite managing to break up a group of homophobic cadets and saving the life the leapee's roommate, Phillip, Sam has yet to leap out. And according to Al, Ziggy says it's because he still has to compete in the track meet.

• Saturday Night Live: When Seth Meyers was "Weekend Update" anchor, he (and Amy Poehler when she was co-anchor) would sometimes go into the "Really?" segment on stories that simply sounded too ridiculous.
• Stargate SG-1: Colonel Jack O'Neill, in the first manner explained. It's his signature line.
• Supergirl:
  • In the episode "The Darkest Place", this is Alex's reaction to finding out that James is secretly the Guardian, National City's newest costumed crimefighter.
  • In the pilot episode, Supergirl makes her debut attempting to save a fallen plane. When she sees that the plane is about to hit a bridge, she shouts, "Oh come on!"
• Supernatural:
  • Plenty of occasions throughout the show. Done for Rule of Threes in "My Heart Will Go On".
  • This is Lilith's reaction to the prophet Chuck.

  • When Danielle showcases various products for dogs to Antoine, one of them is a coat with hook-and-loop fasteners on it. She explains that the dog can use the coat to carry not only tennis balls, but also stuff like frisbees, remote controls, and tools among other things. Antoine is baffled by it and asks her "Is that a joke?"
  • Antoine agrees to replace Armand as the vet at Les Îles-de-la-Madeleines. However, Armand then calls Antoine and asks him to come that afternoon rather than one week later:
    Antoine: [in disbelief] Is that a joke?
    Armand: No, it's not a joke. This is a joke: What's the difference between an 18 wheeler and my mother-in-law?
• The West Wing: In "Take This Sabbath Day", this is Leo's reaction to Sam telling him the reason (in not so many words) why Simon Cruz isn't dead yet despite the appeal having been denied – it's after sundown on Friday, and the federal government does not execute people on the Sabbath (technically, all three of them).
  Leo: [Sam is about to leave] Why Monday morning?
  Sam: What do you mean?
  Leo: The court denied the appeal. Why isn't he being executed at midnight tonight?
  Sam: We don't execute people between sundown Friday and sundown Sunday.
  Leo: Why?
  Sam: Hard as it is to believe …
  Leo: [blinks, figures it out for himself] You're kidding me.

• Whose Line Is It Anyway?: One show had a game where the performers sing and act out a title sequence to a sitcom. They received the prompt Bill Cosby & Hitler from an audience member. Drew said, "You've got to be kidding me, come on!" when the censors objected and had them change it to Bill Cosby & the Insurance Salesman.
• A contestant on Wipeout (2008) asked another how he was in the final 4 on the Sweeper when he had injured his knee in the prior round. Said player is Yoshi Sudarso, Blue Dino Charge Ranger...
• Wire in the Blood: Dr. Tony Hill literally says this when set up and busted for possession of cocaine in his car (after he has pried around too much for the Texas locals). Unusually, everyone else, including the cops, also acknowledges how ridiculous the charge is, but they go through with the drop-charges-if-you-buzz-off-now spiel nevertheless.

Pro Wrestling

• The normal reaction that the reigning World Champion will have when the music plays off the current holder of the Money in the Bank briefcase. For the most part, this will lead to the championship changing hands without much warning.
• This is also the reaction whenever a wrestler performs a signature move of another wrestler, especially when they think they can copycat The Undertaker. You know who we are talking about.
• Announcers often say this during awesome high-risk spots. Don West was a frequent offender.
• The reaction of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Owen Hart, and the British Bulldog to Mick Foley's debut as Dude Love.
• When Mankind started to climb back up the cell after recovering from the long fall into the Spanish announcers' table in King of the Ring 1998, Jim Ross shouted out, "Are you kidding me?! He wants to climb back up!" As a bonus, in an unused camera feed that has since been shown in some videos like Eve of Destruction, The Undertaker got the same reaction as JR at the same time mixed in with "Oh, Crap!" before scrambling back up to the top of the cell, hoping to get there before Mankind did.
• There were three matches that involved Big Show where the ring actually broke while getting superplexed, first in 2003 by Brock Lesnar, then in 2011 with Mark Henry, and then in 2017 by Braun Strowman. Corey Graves's words don't even describe how shocked he was.
  Graves: Oh... God. I kid you not, these two gargantuans just collapsed the ring!
• During the 2006 Royal Rumble, Vince McMahon suggested to Rey Mysterio might recently-departed Eddie Guerrero might have a hand in drawing Rey's number for the main event. Rey agreed...and proceeded to draw #2. He treated it as a practical joke from beyond. Naturally, Rey went on to win the whole freakin' thing, setting a chronological endurance record that would last for the next 12 years.
  Rey: Aww, guys, you gotta be kidding me. Eddie... You got me, man... you got me.
• This was the reaction at the 2014 Royal Rumble those in the ring had when Los Matadores arrived, thinking it was one of them, only to learn it was El Torito, much to the dismay of the guy who got eliminated. Even the announcers had this response.
• When the identity of the higher power that The Undertaker was serving with his Ministry of Darkness was revealed to be Vince McMahon, Jim Ross's response was "Son of a bitch!", as if he thought that was a stupid plot twist and couldn't believe it.

Puppet Shows

• The Muppet Show: In a fourth season episode version of "Pigs in Space", the Swinetrek is being menaced by "Dearth Nader", whom Miss Piggy is scared of...until she hears his voice (Gonzo), at which point she makes a face to the audience, and mutters, "Oh, good grief."

Radio

• As noted, sports announcers will use "You have got to be kidding me" or permutations of it during pivotal moments in an event. But the announcers of the New Orleans-Minnesota game on January 14, 2018, had opposing emotions when Vikings QB Case Keenum's 63-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs with ten seconds left in the game sent the Vikings to the NFC Championship. The Vikings announcers (KFAN) were yelling "Are you kidding me?!" in delirious jubilation while the Saints announcer (WWL) delivered the same line with stressed disillusionment.

Video Games

• Both AWACS Thunderhead and one of the allied tanks in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War have this reaction in the "Desert Lightning" mission after the enemy manages to sneak a battleship into the river near their fallen airfield.
• One of the optional dialogue choices in BattleTech (2018) has Lord Alexander Madeira explain about the icy Hellhole Prison planet you're about drop onto. Yang responds with horrified disbelief at the prospect that the minus-twenty temperatures aren't the worst thing about the place.
  Player: I need to know what I'm about to send my lance into. What makes Weldry so inhospitable?
  Madeira: Everything, from the subzero climate to the inedible vegetation. The whole planet is infested with bloodsucking insects... the swarms can stretch for miles.
  Yang: You're shittin' me.
• In the very beginning of Beyond Good & Evil, the main heroine Jade finds out that the power company cut off power feed to her house for nonpayment. Oh, yeah, she finds it out when the defensive force field over her house dies in the middle of an alien invasion. Jade is apparently a very polite and temperate girl, so the worst she has to say about the situation is You Have Got To Be Kidding Me.
• Blood II: The Chosen:
  • Telemarketer: Uhm, good morning, afternoon, evening, Mister Cal-Eeb. I'm with a market research firm and we're doing a survey on computer games, this call is not an attempt to sell you anything. First question: Are you currently or have you ever been a character in a computer game?
    Caleb: You've gotta be kidding.
  • Caleb utters the line again at the beginning of the second chapter when Gideon once again crashes the subway train Caleb was riding on into another one.
• Call of Duty:
  • Variations happen twice in Modern Warfare.
    • When Gaz hears that The Squad's extraction point has just become compromised and they have to fight through a virtual army downhill to the secondary one before the chopper leaves without them, he lets out the anguished: "Oh, he's gotta be taking the piss!"
    • Price, Soap, and Griggs fight their way to the final bunker door under extreme time pressure and the door begins to open veeeeerryyyy slooowlyyy.
      Griggs: Oh, you gotta be shittin' me!

  • In Black Ops, Hudson says the quote verbatim when told the only way to escape a pursuing Spetznaz hit-squad that wants him, his partner, and their prisoner dead is to jump off the roof of the building they're all standing on.
• This is one of Ami's lines in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled when she loses a race.
• In Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, this is Adell's reaction when the summoning spell to conjure Overlord Zenon brings Rozalin;
  Mom: Well, she sure is cute for an Overlord.
  Adell: ...You've got to be kidding! She's Overlord Zenon!?
• This is Varric's exact reaction in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition upon meeting the Avvar trader, Helsdim. The man is a major fan of Varric's writings and owns a copy of every single printing of his most famous novel, Hard in Hightown, "even the banned version." ^note This interaction is an Easter Egg, which is only unlocked by bringing Varric to the trader's hut as a member of the party, then making him the active character and interacting with the trader.
• In the Game Boy Advance Updated Re-release of EarthBound Beginnings, when Teddy, Ninten, and Ana hear a robot monster approaching, Teddy says, "You've got to be kidding me!", and a Hopeless Boss Fight ensues.
• Fallout: New Vegas: If you enter the general store in Nipton while having a bad reputation with the Powder Gangers (which most players will, because the game encourages you to wipe them out before leaving Goodsprings), Boxcars (the injured Powder Ganger inside the store) does not react well to seeing you.
  Boxcars: Are you fucking kidding me?! First I get my legs smashed, and then in walks the Powder Gangers' grim fucking reaper?! What the fuck have you got against us, bitch?!
• The Final Fantasy series:
  • Zidane of Final Fantasy IX says this almost word-for-word when the Armodullahan appears out of nowhere in an enclosed space. To his credit, he does start running before saying the line.
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning summoning Odin for the first time cues the following quote just before he tries to bisect Hope. Bonus points for snarking her sudden role as the Badly Battered Babysitter after they were separated from Sazh and Vanille prior to the summoning.
    This cannot be happening.
• In the Gears of War series, Marcus has this reaction after shooting a chicken that upon being shot, turns into a giant golden mutant version of itself.
  Marcus: Are you kidding me?
• In Half-Life 2: Episode One, just when Gordon and Alyx find an elevator out of the darkened underground parking areas of City 17, the elevator fails as soon as she tries to call it, capped off with, "You've got to be kidding me!" from Alyx.
• In Halo: Reach, on the mission Exodus; this is said in response to reports of suicide grunts.
• inFAMOUS has Cole say this when he gets a load of Sasha.
• Kyle Katarn in Jedi Knight, when he sees just how far he's got to jump to get to his goal. The player probably had a similar reaction: it is a long way over a hell of a drop.
• In Killzone 3, after blowing up an oil rig and jumping to safety, the resulting wave towers over the main character, and he simply quips "...Really?"
• In Kindergarten, Cindy's mission involves putting gum in Lily's hair, and the player is expected to do it during morning time. However, if you for some reason wait until Lily's snuck into the corridor during lunch time (at which point you've likely already failed the mission anyway), she'll have this reaction to the fact that you went through the effort of finding something to bribe the lunch lady into letting you out with just so you could put gum in her hair.
• The Legend of Zelda CD-i Games: Seen in The Faces of Evil.
  Link: How about a kiss, for luck?

• Mass Effect:

  • In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Raiden says this exact phrase right before the final boss powers up. Odds are the player will say the same thing at this scene.
• In Mugen Souls, Chou-Chou has this reaction when she sees Soul Skyheart parading Sandy around in a bikini.
  Ryuto: Wait, someone else is with him.
  Chou-Chou: Oh, you're right. [pauses, then says in disbelief] You're crappin' me!
• In Octopath Traveler II, the captain of the Sacred Guard refers to Temenos as a "hound" because he keeps getting in their way. In his second chapter, he can have a conversation with Ochette where she hilariously misinterprets the "nickname," at first thinking it's because of Temenos's "big, adorable eyes," and then listing a bunch of good qualities about dogs. When Ochette finally asks if she can call him a hound, too, what's his response?

  • Portal: This is the reaction GLaDOS has when you drop one of her cores into an incinerator.

• In Silent Hill: Homecoming, this is Alex's reaction to encountering a Needler for the first time.

• Snake has a habit of being utterly blindsided by his mission control's wackier information regarding the other fighters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
• Sheena Fujibayashi in Tales of Symphonia is very fond of this line.
  • She says it when she gets flustered, such as if Lloyd catches her playing with children and Luin and comments on how cute this makes her look.
  • It's also what she'll say if an enemy lands a critical blow on her in battle.
  • She gets an epic one in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World after deftly avoiding a trap... only to land squarely on another one.
• The Scout of Team Fortress 2 will sometimes say this line during stalemate, while reacting to the Burstchester taunt, or when the Yeti Punch taunt is used. He will also say this when he is reacting to the skeleton spell.

• Red vs. Blue:
  • This has become the closest thing Washington has to a catchphrase, always uttered when something extremely stupid happens to or around him. Which is a lot. For example, he does it in Red vs. Blue: Reconstruction after he discovers that even the Big Bad's computer pronounces "E.M.P." as "ehmp".
  • Happens with Lopez, who due to nearly everyone on the team being unable to understand Spanish is left non-plussed when the only thing that Donut was able to mostly translate accurately was a Sarcastic remark during a tense situation.
  • After the Reds and Tucker spend an entire episode getting their asses handed to them by Tex, Simmons finally gets a clear shot at her with a heat-seeking missile, only for her to outrun the thing and use some teleporters to start running back at them with the missile in tow. This causes Tucker, the only one who held his cool for the entire "fight", to finally lose it.
    Tucker: Are you fucking kidding me? Run!
  • Felix does this when he hears of a man who calls himself "Sharkface".
    Felix: What is he, a Batman villain?
• RWBY:
  • Jaune screams, "Are you kidding me!?" when Neptune uses the same failed pickup line that he once used on Weiss and it works.
  • And again in season 3: After fighting off a squadron of Paladin mechs and barely surviving, the students turn to see a newer, stronger, faster Paladin prepare to bear down on them. The team's only response? Sun quoting the trope.
  • Torchwick says "You cannot be serious" in the same episode when he finds out that the person who landed on his ship is Ruby^Notewho until this point met him four times and each time she ended up making a complete mess of his plans.

• Amphibia: In "True Colors", Sasha says this when she and Anne find out that Marcy had them all transported to Amphibia on purpose.
• Avatar: The Last Airbender: Aang overcomes a Fire Nation vessel with some difficulty... then says this exact phrase on seeing the entire fleet behind it!
• In the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Beware the Grey Ghost", Bruce Wayne realizes that a series of bombings are copied from the Grey Ghost show he enjoyed as a kid. The actor who played him hands over the episode, which Bruce enjoys watching while searching for clues until he finds out that the bombs were driven in toy cars, leading to an unbelieving reaction and Bruce to comment, well, You Have Got to Be Kidding Me.
• The Bojack Horseman episode "Fish Out of Water" ends with one. Bojack spends the entire episode unable to speak, due to being at an underwater film festival and wearing a helmet — leading to much frustration. In the last moments, he finds out the helmet has a button that allows him to speak, and yells, "You gotta be kid...." before the credits roll.
• In the Danny Phantom episode "Mystery Meat", Sam is trapped by a ghost in a pile of meat. She utters this line when Tucker arrives with a knife and fork, assuring her he'll free her in no time.
• Dragamonz: This is Boaragon's reaction when Fyra has both him and Dax fight against a trio of Mystic Firewings when Fyra sees that they have the Crystal of the Five Corners.

• The Emperor's New School: In the first episode, Kuzco had to win a footrace to avoid failing P.E. class. Yzma sabotaged him by cutting the rope bridge to the finish line, but Kuzco jumped over the gorge (he was a rabbit at the time) and flew into the banner over the finish line...which flung him all the way back to the Academy where the race started. Except he landed on a fountain, blocking its flow until the pressure built up enough to send him flying...all the way back to the finish line. At that point, Yzma had this reaction.
• House of Mouse: In "Dining Goofy", this is Eeyore's response to being seated with Jiminy Cricket thanks to Goofy's seating charts.

• In the Justice League episode "Legends", Flash is fighting a supervillain in a Retro Universe. Just when it looks like he's won, he sees a bus full of nuns on a collision course with a TNT truck.

  • "Cargo of Doom": Admiral Yularen is positively incredulous when Anakin announces his intent to board Cad Bane's frigate with AT-TEs. It's obvious that the Admiral is starting to wonder if he's the Only Sane Man among people who regularly work with Anakin during this conversation.
  • "Bound for Rescue": Ahsoka has this reaction when she sees that the "Animal Instincts" are actually the younglings in disguise who came to rescue her from Hondo Ohnaka (though she says it as "Oh no...").
• Star Wars Resistance: In "Live Fire", this is Hype Fazon's reaction when Kazuda Xiono is introduced as going to be joining Ace Squadron. Kaz is a military-trained pilot, but a) most of the people on the Colossus don't know that because he was undercover, and b) he's The Klutz and a total dork when not flying, so he doesn't come off at all as having had military training.
• Static Shock: In "A League of Their Own", Static is being chased by a brainwashed Justice League. He tries to escape Flash by flying over water, reasoning that he won't be able to follow him. Flash proves him wrong by running across the water, causing Static to say, "Oh, come on!"
• Steven Universe: Future:
  • In "Bluebird", this is Steven's reaction when the vengeful fusion Bluebird Azurite reforms because their components are that sick of him.
  • In "Growing Pains", Dr. Maheswaran is dumbfounded that she's the first person to give Steven a medical exam, yelling, "You're 16 years old and you've never been to the doctor?!"
• A variant in Superman: The Animated Series where Superman has just disrupted a crime in progress and one of the goons brandishes a wooden club at him. Clark just stands there and goes, "You're kidding, right?"
• Raphael from the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon says it quite often when he runs into trouble. For example:
