Fanfic / Twilight Sparkle, You're Being Ridiculous

Go To

Twilight Sparkle explains to Princess Celestia she planned to exile herself and become a villain after her shameful actions.

Princess Celestia laughs and tells her prized pupil that she's blowing things way out of proportion.

Twilight Sparkle, You're Being Ridiculous by redandready45 is a Canterlot Wedding one shot fic, but written in a way that mocks the Canterlot Wedding fic while affirming the ideals of My Little Pony. StudioStraightToThePointStudio recorded an audio play that can be seen here.

The author also wrote I, Twilight Sparkle, Plan to Be The Most Evil Villain EVER!, an AU prequel about what would happen if Twilight actually tried to exile herself and become a villain. Spoiler alert: she fails horribly.

Twilight Sparkle, You're Being Ridiculous! contains the following tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Twilight calls out Princess Celestia for not believing her, she acknowledges she was wrong not to believe Twilight and apologizes for it, but firmly asks this to her prized pupil. This makes Twilight realize she didn't handle things very well herself.
Princess Celestia: But let me ask you a question, Twilight: if my faithful student is screaming 'SHE'S EVIL!' in the middle of a wedding rehearsal, and my 'niece' has a logical explanation for her behavior, and she breaks down crying in offense, who am I inclined to believe?
  • Both Sides Have a Point: The fic acknowledges that while Twilight's friends and family were wrong to not believe her about Chrysalis, Twilight made her accusation in a way that made it hard for anypony to believe.
  • Cooldown Hug: Princess Celestia gives one to Twilight after seeing her cry over how she was ignored and belittled at the wedding.
  • Deconstruction Fic: The fic deconstructs the "Canterlot Wedding angst" fics but in a different way. Many such fics have Princess Celestia exiling Twilight over her misbehavior at Canterlot's wedding. Celestia herself laughs at the idea of banishing Twilight: Princess Celestia is a Reasonable Authority Figure who would never banish her prized pupil and a Bearer of the Elements of Harmony over a minor slight. Instead, they talk their fears and concerns out.
  • Heroic BSoD: Twilight tearfully admits her outburst was because she was mad at nopony for listening to her concerns, that everpony only cared about having a wedding than if the wedding should go on, and because she was upset over Shining Armor not telling her about the marriage.
  • Make Way for the New Villains: In-Universe, Twilight planned to behead her rival for power in the desert wastes.
  • Take That!: The whole story is a swipe at Canterlot Wedding fics, especially the angsty ones that make Twilight's friends and family into monsters while ignoring her mistakes.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Played for Laughs, with Celestia laughing like crazy over Twilight thinking she was about to be banished and exiled.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Princess Celestia assures Twilight that her friends will still love her in spite of their mistakes, and that Twilight doesn't need to become a criminal even if she stops being Celestia's student.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Celestia gives a small one to Twilight, admonishing her for the outburst since it made it hard for her to believe "Cadence" was evil.

I, Twilight Sparkle, Plan to Be The Most Evil Villain EVER! contains the following examples:

  • Big Damn Heroes: This happens twice:
    • Princess Luna swoops in to save Twilight from Chrysalis.
    • Hard Tack and Margarine swoop in to hold off Pharynx and the Changeling army.
  • Battle Couple: Hard Tack and Margarine. Enforcers of the law and Happily Married for 27 years.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Thorax and Pharynx are assistants Chrysalis. It isn't a fun job.
  • Deconstruction Fic: The fic takes a sledgehammer at the idea of Twilight undergoing a Face–Heel Turn: despite being hurt over the wedding, Twilight would still be too nice to be truly villainous and she immediately regrets hurting somepony, even accidentally.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Defied. Twilight fears she's going to be hanged by the Sheriff for accidentally knocking a stallion out. Hard Tack assures her she'll just be fined since her record is pretty clean.
    • Hilariously inverted. Chrysalis crows to the heroes she'll never tell the heroes where Cadence is under the threat of torture. The sheriff threatens her with community service, and she spills the beans.
  • For Want Of A Nail: What if Twilight wasn't banished to the mines by Chrysalis and was allowed to leave the wedding.
  • Insult Backfire:
Chrysalis: "Some lesser princess will not deny me my power!"
Princess Luna: "How terrible for you. Despite all your power, you can't beat this lesser princess!"
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sherrif Hard Tack, while not impressed with Twilight's actions, assures her that she isn't going to be severely punished over a first-time offense. He and his wife later help her take down Chrysalis and her army.
  • Running Gag: Twilight obsessively checking her long list.
  • Scary Shadow Fakeout: Twilight fears the sheriff is preparing a noose for her. Instead, he's just practicing his knots.
  • Shout-Out: The scene where Pharynx crows to Chrysalis why they can't just kill Princess Cadence and Chrysalis shutting him down references the scene from Austin Powers where Scott asks Dr. Evil why he doesn't just shoot Powers.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sherrif Hard Tack isn't amused with Twilight using his town to live out her villain fantasies.
