Mia is happily engaged to Tim, planning their marriage for the near future. In the meantime, her father is getting remarried to Elizabeth. As both their families get together, Mia is introduced to Elizabeth's daughter Frida, who's a lesbian. To the dismay of both, they are instantly smitten, while Frida has a partner as well.

After succumbing to their mutual attraction, kissing and having sex, Mia guiltily goes home earlier. Their attraction remains though, and the two are continually drawn to each other after this while struggling against the fact. Before long, others find out and they must deal with their feelings for good.

The film was also released under the name With Every Heartbeat in foreign screenings.

Examples:

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Frida's father isn't mentioned in the film, but her mother is single as she's getting married to Lasse.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Elizabeth and Frida suggest that Mia is bisexual, having fallen in love with the latter while also being engaged to Tim. Mia doesn't say (or perhaps know) what her orientation is, though she admits her attraction to women.
  • Bisexual Love Triangle: Mia is happily engaged to Tim at the beginning, then finds herself suddenly attracted to Frida, her soon to be sister-in-law. They kiss and then have sex, which makes her feel quite guilty. Mia agonizes about what to do. She eventually chooses Frida.
  • But I Would Really Enjoy It: Mia really wants Frida, but after the two have sex she's wracked with guilt and doesn't want to leave her fiance Tim at first either.
  • Closet Gay: Mia is engaged to Tim at the beginning, but likes women too. She never told him or her family about this however, before she meets Frida and they fall for each other.
  • Closet Key: Frida seems like this for Mia at first, since she's engaged to Tim. It's subverted later though as Mia shows such experience having sex with Frida that she realizes this can't have been her first time with a woman. When she asks, Mia admits its true, she had been with a woman in the past, but didn't tell Tim or anyone else.
  • Fanservice Extra: Frida's partner Elin only appears in a few scenes, but one features her topless, showing her large breasts as she puts on a shirt after Frida backs out of having sex with her.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Tim learns Mia is seeing Frida by spotting them on the street embracing and then kissing each other. He doesn't let her know he saw at first however.
  • Get Out!: Tim angrily orders Mia to leave their apartment after she's left him at the altar and tries making peace with him.
  • The Ghost: Mia's mother is mentioned more than once but never seen.
  • Good Parents: Elizabeth admits to Lasse that at first she wasn't happy about Frida being a lesbian, but came to accept this since it's just who she is. Lasse also isn't happy to admit Mia likes women and has some homophobic comments on the matter, but also says her happiness is what matters over all.
  • Has a Type: Implied as Frida is dating Elina and falls for Mia, while both are olive-skinned, brown-haired women who have slightly similar features. Of course, it's hard to judge from just two examples.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Mia is usually very feminine, with long hair, wearing elegant blouses and skirts. Frida is more chapstick, with an average presentation, along with her partner Elin.
  • Love Confession: Frida and Mia confess their love for each other late in the film.
  • The Modest Orgasm: Mia just gasps quietly when she climaxes while having sex with Frida for the first time.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Frida and Mia are two quite beautiful women. They have three sex scenes together in which they're shown topless or wearing only their lingerie.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Tim, after he manhandles Mia in bed, looks like he might be about to rape her. He stops himself though and draws back from doing anything worse.
  • No Bisexuals: Inverted, really. Everyone in the know suggests Mia is bisexual rather than a lesbian when they learn she's attracted to Frida but also engaged to Tim. Only her dad used “homosexual” in reference to her (denying that she's one).
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: We only learn “Mia” is a nickname for “Maria” when she's about to get married and recites her whole name.
  • R-Rated Opening: The film opens on Mia having sex with her fiance in bed, shot from above with her under him while they do it.
  • Runaway Bride: Mia goes to get married with Tim, but then backs out at the last second when they're with a minister. Tim is bitter and destroys all his photos of her afterward.
  • Shrinking Violet: Mia is a shy, reserved woman, as she admits.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Frida and Mia are both portrayed as very guilty after having sex together, torn between their existing partners and each other. Before confessing she cheated to her partner Elin, Frida can be seen watching an old video of herself saying she would never cheat and loathes it with a guilty expression. Mia later also does the same with her fiance Tim. Neither he nor Elin are sympathetic at all though about this, as you might expect, but the film's narrative is on their side since the pair are portrayed as right in finding happiness together.
  • Transparent Closet: Lasse says to Elizabeth that in retrospect he'd kind of always known that Mia is into women, he just didn't want to acknowledge the fact.
  • Two-Person Pool Party: Elizabeth and Lasse get frisky while in the pool together (not to the point of sex). Their kids Frida and Oskar joke about it while watching from the house.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Inhibited, reserved Mia is drawn to Frida, who's bold and carefree. Frida teases her by saying she's anal, and the pair fall for each other.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Elizabeth is incredulous when Frida says she's fallen in love with Mia, saying she only told Frida to be friends with her.
