Twelve Guardian Shinobi arc

    Sora

Sora

Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa (JP), Keiko Nemoto (JP, young), Michael Sinterniklaas (EN), Bruno Coronel (LA Spanish)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 54

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sora_full.png

A young monk at the Temple of Fire.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: None of the other monks like him, and he copes by being as much of a pest as he can. What he doesn't remember is that after he had Kyuubi chakra implanted in him, he lost control and started destroying the temple. The others mistrust him because they're afraid that it will happen again.
  • Blow You Away: His chakra type is wind like Naruto, and his techniques usually take the form of Razor Wind.
  • Broken Pedestal: He absolutely adores his father Kazuma, who's a Disappeared Dad. He later discovers that Kazuma was a Knight Templar who turned him into a Pseudo-Jinchuriki with the express purpose of having him destroy Konoha.
  • Canon Immigrant: Not Sora himself, but the idea of "Pseudo-Jinchuriki" returns with two brother ninjas who became pseudo-Kyuubi jinchuriki by eating some of the Kyuubi's flesh after it ate them.
  • Evil Knockoff: Well, Jerkass knockoff, since he isn't really evil. His father sealed some of the Kyubi's leftover chakra into him, turning him into a 'pseudo-jinchuriki'.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: A minor example. He has one sleeve longer than the other on his monk uniform, along with an asymmetrical haircut.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Most of his Jerkass nature is to compensate for none of the other monks actually trusting him, after he lost control of the Kyuubi's chakra and went on a rampage.
  • Jerkass: Incredibly rude to most people, and even has the nerve to try to call Tsunade a hag (and promptly suffers the consequences).
  • Mirror Character: Like many filler characters, he has a background similar to Naruto's. Unlike many filler characters, he has powers similar to Naruto's.
  • One-Winged Angel: The Fox Cloak.
  • Power Incontinence: Because he's an incomplete Jinchuriki, he cannot control his powers and goes to Stage 2 when he gets three tails, while Naruto can safely go up to three tails and loses control at four.
  • Red Right Hand: Can transform his arm into a grotesque talon by drawing on the fox's chakra.
  • Synchronization: He feels it when Naruto is being chakra-drained by Fūka, and when his Kyuubi chakra cloak activates, Naruto's does too.
  • Tyke Bomb: The reason he was made into a pseudo-Jinchuriki.
  • Walking the Earth: After mellowing out thanks to Naruto freeing him from his pseudo-Jinchuriki state, he decides to start traveling the world and befriending others.

    Furido

Furido / Kazuma

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (JP), Pete Sepenuk (EN)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 61

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/furido.png

The leader of a team of grave robbers, who wishes to bring unity to the Land of Fire, by destroying all competitors to the throne; i.e. the Hokage and the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

  • Abusive Parents: He's Sora's father, and manipulates him emotionally into going along with his schemes. He also sealed Kyuubi chakra into Sora, which pretty much destroyed his life, just so he could have some approximation of a Jinchuriki under his control.
  • Apocalypse How: Wants to cause a Class 0 example by obliterating Konoha with the Limelight jutsu.
  • Arc Villain: For the Sora Arc.
  • Blow You Away: Furido often uses his wind element in conjunction with weaponry.
  • Chess Motifs: Shogi motifs, technically, but it fits. He's always talking about how he and everyone around him are just pawns who have to protect their king or take the opposing king.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He was very skilled with diverse earth element techniques, using them to both dig through the earth and cause a zombie attack.
  • Faux Affably Evil: At first, he's fairly nice to Sora and offers him baked sweet potatoes. But that doesn't stop him from delivering a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to the kid when he questions their cause (more specifically the necessity of killing every man, woman, and child in Konoha). And he's totally willing to unleash the Kyuubi to further his goals, and to use his own child as a medium to do that.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a diagonal scar across his face. He got it from his final battle with Asuma.
  • Knight Templar: For his ideal of the Fire Nation. He will make the Daimyo the only power in the Land of Fire, even if that means murdering everyone who might possibly have conflicting loyalties.
  • Martial Arts Staff: He wields a Shakujo, a type of staff with a metal ornament on top used by monks in east Asia.
  • Necromancer: Furido uses an earth element technique to resurrect some of his old comrades and countless civilians for an attack on Konoha.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has long white hair and is quite evil.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: His team starts one in Konoha using the dead bodies of villagers that they killed to distract shinobi from their real operations.

    Fūka

Fūka

Voiced by: Yuu Asakawa (JP), Laura Bailey (EN), Analís Sánchez (LA Spanish)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 56

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuuka_2.jpg

A kunoichi and member of a team of grave robbers. She is part of Furido's team, working to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. Fūka is capable of using all five elemental styles of jutsu, and stealing her enemy's chakra with a kiss. She really hates it when her hair is messed with.

  • Achilles' Heel: Her long flowing red hair is her weak point. It is the source of her power, being where she stores all her alternative bodies she has stolen chakra from, and if her hair is cut or damaged in any way then one or more of her stored bodies will die. When Naruto cuts a small part off in their first fight her body ages drastically and turns to dust, and during their second fight he yanks off a large chunk of her hair, causing her to turn into a more monstrous form temporarily. Her hair is also her actual body/houses her soul and lives independently of the rest of her, and it is only when Naruto destroys it with a Rasengan that she truly dies.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When she overhears Naruto talking to himself about her, calling her "easy", she shows no visible signs of anger or annoyance at this comment. She just giggles at him before continuing to flirt with him and attempting to passionately make out with him. However, given her faux romantic attitude and the fact that she still was trying to kill him with her kiss, it is actually zig-zagged how genuinely funny she found this comment.
  • Ambiguously Human: By the time of her first appearance at least her soul is within her hair itself, making it her true body. The various bodies she attaches the hair to are simply remodeled to look the same as (presumably) her original body, which is likely long gone. Once Naruto defeats her various backup bodies she fights him as nothing but a levitating, sapient mass of hair with inexplicably glowing yellow eyes. Nothing is said to explain how she was able to become like this, what sort of jutsu was used, etc. her only explanation when her true form is revealed is that now that Naruto has seen it she can't allow him to live. In terms of modifications she ranks up with Orochimaru and Sasori when it comes to how different her body is from what would normally be considered human. Notably, Naruto has little reaction when he finally manages to kill her, despite normally taking such things very seriously. In the end she is treated more as some kind of monster than a human.
  • Awkward Kiss: Played With during her first kiss with Naruto. She forces a passionate kiss on him with the intent of killing him. But after several seconds of making out with him, she realizes nothing has happened and the two of them awkwardly look into each other's eyes while giving confused groans. She quickly realizes Naruto tricked her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones, and since he can feel what his clones feel it is like he tricked her into sharing a real kiss with him.
  • Berserk Button: She goes ballistic if anyone cuts or damages her hair in any way, calling it "her life" and "most important feature." This is actually justified since it is revealed her hair is the source of all her power since it stores all her alternate bodies she has stolen chakra from.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Played for Horror between her and Naruto. Fūka spends most of their first encounter flirting with him, acting interested in him, and trying to kiss him. But she is not actually in love with him and is only doing it to try to use her Kiss of Death on him, which just makes her faux romantic attitude towards him even more unsettling. After a long fight between the two, ending with Fūka defeating Naruto by turning his legs to stone after yelling how he will pay for damaging her hair, she immediately returns to flirting with him, saying in a calm and loving voice it's time for them to finally kiss, acting like she has instantly forgiven him while keeping her true deadly intentions obvious. With Naruto now helpless against her advances Fūka acts out a mock romantic moment with him while ignoring his pleas with her to stay away from him, acting like the two of them are "lovers" and their entire fight was just Naruto treating her to "one big romantic date". This "romantic moment" between them involves Fūka cuddling with Naruto, forcing a Held Gaze between them as she holds Naruto by his cheeks and chin while their faces linger only inches apart, with Naruto glaring at her in defiance and sweating in fear of her during this while she just giggles sadistically over how "cute" he looks and shooting him a smug victorious smirk. To really emphasize this, this moment happens in dark catacombs and the background music becomes slow and dangerous, leading up to the moment when Fūka decides to finally end their "date" with a "goodnight kiss", whispering her jutsu gently to Naruto (almost like how a real couple might whisper "I love you" to their partner) before quickly forcing a deep passionate kiss on Naruto, the screen backing up from an Extreme Close-Up of it, that begins to slowly drain him of his chakra.
  • Breath Weapon: Some of her jutsus shoot out of her mouth, including Phoenix Flower Jutsu and Spiralling Wind Ball.
  • Captive Date: She plays with this during her first fight with Naruto. After she finally defeats Naruto by turning his legs to stone, trapping him and making him unable to resist her advances, she drops all the anger she was just displaying towards him and resumes flirting with him by gently telling him in a faux loving tone that now that they are finally done fighting they can finally share a "nice hot kiss" together like she wanted them to, acting as if they were lovers and the whole encounter they had together was one big romantic date. She then takes the time to act out a mock romantic moment with Naruto while ignoring his desperate pleas to stay away from him, cuddling with him, forcing a Held Gaze between them while she holds him by his face, giggling at his "cute" expression as he glares at her, and leaving their faces lingering apart for several minutes before giving him a gentle whisper and leaning forward to end their "romantic moment" together with a "goodnight kiss".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Her first fight with Naruto is one in her favor. She spends most of it teasing him and flirting with him, showing how she hardly considers him a threat, easily avoids all his attacks, and surprises him by revealing she can use all five elemental styles of jutsu. Eventually it gets to the point where Naruto stops trying to fight her and just starts running away from her as she cycles through her elements and constantly appears in front of him to block his escape. The only things that don't go in her favor are when Naruto tricks her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones, mocking her for successfully stealing a real kiss from her, and when he manages to get close enough to strike at her with his kunai, which she narrowly manages to dodge in time. However, he manages to cut off a small part of her hair in this strike which ended up killing one of her bodies. Angered at Naruto for this, Fūka stops messing around and uses a Deadly Gaze to turn his legs to stone, making it so he can no longer resist her advancements on him or run away. After this, Naruto actually begs her to stay away from him, with her ignoring his desperate pleas and him only able to stare at her in horror as she violently restrains him. With him effectively defeated and helpless against her now, she taunts him by dragging things out now that he can't resist her, continuing to flirt with him and acting out a mock romantic moment with him as if they were lovers, acting like their entire fight was just Naruto treating her to "one big romantic date", with her "thanking him" by cuddling with him and holding him by his face so they can gaze into each others eyes. The only thing Naruto can do during this is glare at Fūka in defiance even as he clearly begins to sweat out of fear and anxiety, with her just smirking and giggling at him in response before whispering gently to him and leaning forward, locking lips with him and ending their "date" with a long awaited "goodnight kiss". It is only through sheer luck Naruto survived the encounter.
  • Dating Catwoman: Sakura seemed to think this was the case between her and Naruto. When she and Sai found her and Naruto kissing, she was shown shocked and enraged at seeing Naruto kissing the enemy, not realizing that Fūka was forcing the kiss on him. It is actually subverted though. Despite Fūka's beauty and heavy flirting with him, Naruto isn't interested in her at all, and Fūka isn't actually in love with him either, just wanting to kiss him to drain his chakra.
  • Deadly Gaze: She has a paralysis jutsu that lets her turn someone's legs to stone by looking at them. While using this, her eyes widen and her hair moves in the air on its own like snakes, making her seem like Medusa.
  • Death Glare: When she gets annoyed with Naruto, she gives him several glares and drops her faux romantic persona, revealing her true sadistic side.
    • After she realizes that Naruto tricked her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones instead of the real him, and then taunts her over it by mockingly flirting with her now, blowing her a kiss and complimenting that her kiss was actually Not Bad, Fūka just growls in humiliation over him outsmarting her and stealing a kiss from her, and glares at him while saying he had made her mad.
    • After Naruto cuts her hair she gives him a bitter glare while explaining how important her hair is to her and how long it took to grow it. It gets worse when she uses her paralysis jutsu on him. She is on the receiving end of one from Naruto himself shortly afterwards, when she has him trapped and cuddles with him, holding him by his cheeks and chin to force him to gaze at her, he defiantly glares at her even as their faces linger only inches apart. Fūka just giggles softly at him as he does this, finding him "cute" like that, while giving him a smug smirk.
    • During their second fight, while Naruto is hanging from the ledge of a roof she offers to help him up if he lets her kiss him and take his body. When Naruto refused and insulted her, she openly drops the act and stomps on his hand, glaring down at him with a smirk before torturing him by zapping him.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She is clearly surprised, and a bit disappointed, when Naruto actually turns down her offer to share a kiss with her. Shortly afterwards, when she forces a passionate kiss on him, she is briefly confused when nothing happens to him after several seconds of kissing pass, with both of them staring at each other while giving confused groans, only to realize he outsmarted her by tricking her into kissing a Shadow Clone.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Her reaction to Naruto accidentally cutting a small portion of her hair during their first fight, when he was actually aiming for her face, is to go ballistic and scream that he will pay for it and use a jutsu to turn his legs to stone. Subverted when it turns out this was justified for her since she needs her hair as the source of her power and the very thing keeping her alive.
  • Double Entendre: Her flirting is filled with these, hinting at several sexual offers to both lure Naruto in and emphasize her sadistic side. She often talks about how older women have "more experience" than young boys like Naruto, or how she wants to teach Naruto "the mysteries of the female body".
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: A gender-reversed example. She attempts to kiss Naruto even while he is unconscious.
    • In their first fight, when she finds Naruto seemingly unconscious after she zaps him and washes him away, she dusts off his face and attempts to kiss him. But it turns out to be another Shadow Clone and vanishes in a puff of smoke when she is inches apart from it.
    • After knocking Naruto out in their second fight, she kisses him while he is unconscious. But she ends up taking too long and Naruto wakes up while she is kissing him without her noticing, and quickly figures out how to beat her.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted with her flirting towards Naruto. After Naruto cuts her hair she goes ballistic and screams that he will pay for it before using a paralysis jutsu to turn his legs to stone. She seems to immediately calm down and gently tells Naruto it is time for them to finally share a "nice hot kiss" together like she wanted from the start, as if she has suddenly forgiven him for what he has done and simply wants to kiss and make up with him. However, it immediately becomes clear this isn't what she is suggesting when she darkly adds that she'll take his soul as payment for the kiss, before violently grabbing his shoulders to stop him from struggling against her and ignoring his pleas for her to stay away from him.
  • Eat the Camera: More like "Kiss the camera" but it still counts. As she is holding Naruto by his face after capturing him, the screen shifts to an Extreme Close-Up of her face as she begins to slowly lean in towards Naruto, with her whispering her jutsu to him once again before puckering up and the screen going black for a moment as her lips obscure it, before suddenly crashing back to the previous angle to show her successfully kissing Naruto.
  • Elemental Powers: She has all five. She achieves this by switching between bodies with the different elemental traits, using her hair as a Soul Jar.
  • Evil Is Petty: After she has pretty much defeated Naruto in their first fight, capturing him and leaving him helpless against her, instead of finishing him off right away she decides to drag things out with him by continuing to flirt with him and acting out a mock romantic moment with him, just to sadistically emphasize to him how helpless he is against her now while making her true deadly intentions obvious. It is implied part of her reason for doing this is revenge against him for cutting her hair during their fight, which Naruto is still clueless about how important it actually is for her due to her vagueness about it.
  • Evil Redhead: She has long red hair and is a member of a group planning to destroy the Leaf Village.
  • Extreme Close-Up: Fūka gets a lot of focus and close-up shots throughout her screen time, which are often used to emphasize her beauty. Her extreme close-ups though still do this while also often showing her more sadistic side when angered.
    • She gets a focus shot when she is leaning down to kiss Naruto for the first time after pinning him against the wall, the screen focuses on her as she seductively lowers her head with closed eyes and slowly opens her mouth. After a short close-up of Naruto shaking his head wildly before she claps his cheeks together to hold him still, it switches back to a close-up of her face as she whispers her jutsu to Nauto, specifically zooming in on her lips as she opens them wide. This is followed by an extreme close up of both their faces as she plants her lips on top of Naruto's and makes out with him passionately for several seconds, and lingers for a bit when they both open their eyes and stare at each other in confusion. After Fūka realizes she was tricked into kissing one of Naruto's Shadow Clones and he mocks her over it, there is a close up of her scowling face as she growls that he's made her mad.
    • When she is examining the damage to her hair after Naruto accidentally cuts it during their fight, the screen zooms in on her as she growls that hair is vital to a woman, before she brushes a hand through her hair and begins to slowly approach Naruto.
    • After defeating and capturing Naruto, she cuddles with him and holds him by the face, forcing him to stare at her as she cuddles with him. After a moment of this with her giggeling sadistically at him, the screen cuts to a close-up of her face as she slowly leans in towards Naruto, slowly zooming in on her lips again as she whispers her jutsu to Naruto and puckering up right as her lips take up the screen before fading to black and crashing back to the original angle to show her having successfully locked lips with Naruto. Also, a quick Freeze-Frame Bonus starts with a extreme close-up of the kiss, showing their lips locked together before immediately zooming out to show their entire faces.
    • During their second fight, when Fūka stomps on Naruto's hand after he once again insults her and refuses to give in to her advances, we see a close-up of her sinister scowling and grinning face.
    • Finally, after she decides to kiss Naruto again after knocking him out to take his Wind-type chakra, there is a close up of her as she licks her lips sadistically before whispering her jutsu, right before lowering herself on top of Naruto and kissing him.
  • Fatal Flaw: Greed and, considering how she drains chakra, Gluttony as well. She could have killed Naruto several times over the course of their fights, but always holds back in order to just incapacitate him because she wants him alive to drain his vast stores of rare chakra for herself. Not even the Nine-Tails' chakra overwhelming her is enough to dissuade her from trying again later. This leads to her death since holding back leaves her vulnerable and eventually allows Naruto to figure out her closely-guarded secrets and weaknesses.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She seems like a beautiful young woman and speaks gently to Naruto when they first meet, flirting with him and offering him a kiss. However, it is all actually an act and her kisses kill people by draining them of their chakra. When Naruto continues to mess around with her and outsmart her she slowly stops flirting with him and calling him pet names, and reveals a more sadistic side to her. At one point, after she finally catches him, she resumes her faux flirtatious attitude and acts like the two of them are on a romantic date together just to taunt Naruto over how helpless he is, forcing a mock romantic Held Gaze between them as she holds his face with him glaring at her unable to fight back and she smirks smugly and giggles at him.
  • Femme Fatale: She appears as a very beautiful woman, and attempts to use it to her full advantage to hide her true evil personality. When she first meets Naruto she offers him a kiss in an attempt to quickly kill him and is shocked when he turns her down, implying that she often does this for many of her victims and very few, if any of them, have rejected her.
  • Flowers of Romance: Extremely downplayed, but still noticeable with her. One of her Wind-Style jutsus is called "Scattering Flower Dance", involving her creating a cyclone of flower petals which she uses to attack Naruto with enough force to send him crashing into a stone wall. While this is clearly an offensive technique, her using flowers as a weapon matches her flirtatious attitude, and immediately after first using it on Naruto she continues flirting with him by teasing him over his shock at her ability to use all five nature chakras.
  • Forceful Kiss: After Naruto rejects her offer to share a kiss she tries to force a kiss on him several times. She successfully kisses him three different times, but none of them completely works out for her for various reasons.
    • First, she pins him against a wall and claps his cheeks together to force him to stay still and pucker up. She passionately makes out with him for a few seconds, but it is revealed she kissed one of his Shadow Clones, which allowed him to survive.
      • Though unsuccessful, she later attempts to kiss Naruto again when it seems she has defeated him and zapped him unconscious. After dusting off his face a bit she slowly begins lowering herself on top of him, intending to kiss him while he is unconscious. Before their lips can meet though it is revealed that it is just another Shadow Clone and it disappears only a few inches away from her face like before.
    • Second, she immobilizes the real Naruto during their fight, successfully kisses him, and begins draining his chakra. After a while though, she absorbs chakra from the Nine-Tails and can't handle it due to it being too "evil" and she shoves Naruto away, returning his chakra to him.
    • Third, she knocks out Naruto during their second fight but after calming down remembers he has wind nature chakra and decides to stock up, lowering herself on top of him and kissing him while he's unconscious. She spends too long fantasizing about having his power for herself though and draws out the kiss too long, allowing Naruto to wake up and realize her weakness, and he breaks the kiss before she can get his chakra.
  • Hair Flip: She tends to brush her hand through her long hair, either as a gesture when flirting or as a way to try to calm herself when angry.
  • Hand Stomp: During her second fight with Naruto, when he ends up hanging off the side of a roof they were fighting on, she offers to help him up if he agrees to kiss her and let her have his chakra in exchange. When Naruto once again rejects her and insults her, she responds by stomping on his hand and sadistically zapping him with a Lightning jutsu to make him fall to his death, though he is thankfully able to save himself.
  • Healing Factor: She can survive direct hits from Naruto's Rasengan and heals a scratch Naruto gave her almost instantly. In reality, she's actually just switching between bodies that were hurt and bodies that weren't. The bodies that she was using when injured stayed injured (or killed in some cases), and she gives away her trick by not using certain combos and switching back to her injured water chakra body during her fight with Naruto.
  • Held Gaze:
    • An accidental Played for Laughs version happens between her and Naruto. During their first kiss, Fūka closes her eyes as she slowly lowers her head towards Naruto, and once she plants her lips against his, he also closes his eyes from the shock of it. After several seconds pass of Fūka passionately making out with Naruto though, she peeks her eyes open to look at Naruto, but discovered he was completly unaffected by her kiss. They both open their eyes as wide as they can, with Fūka still forcibly kissing Naruto as this happens, and awkwardly stare into each other's eyes while giving confused groans. This only lasts a moment before Naruto disappears in a puff of smoke, ending the forced lip-lock and revealing Fūka actually made out with one of his Shadow Clones.
    • She pulls a much more dark variant of this on Naruto later. After she finally manages to immobilize and capture him, she seemingly drops all the anger she was just displaying towards him moments ago and takes a moment to flirt with him and make herself comfortable with him. She cuddles with him, gently cupping his face by his cheeks and chin, and forces him to look her in the eyes with their faces lingering only inches apart for presumably a few minutes. Unlike the usual romantic implications this has though, where two lovers gaze at each other romantically before slowly leaning toward each other and sharing a passionate kiss together, Naruto just glares at Fūka, unable to resist her advancements and sweating out of fear of what she will do to him, and Fūka giggles sadistically at him in his helpless state, while giving him a smug victorious smirk. Fūka does this simply to mock Naruto over how helpless he is against her now, acting out a seemingly romantic gesture between them as if they were simply on a date, while making her true deadly intentions obvious. She keeps her gaze steadily locked on Naruto's eyes, even as she forcibly locks lips with him and drains him of his chakra, making sure it works this time.
  • Honey Trap: She seems to use this as her first option when she finds a victim she wants to add to her "collection". Instead of fighting Naruto at first, she simply offers to make out with him, asking if he prefers "French or traditional". It seems like this method usually works for her, since when Naruto rejected her advancements and runs away, she has a disappointed, almost saddened expression at being turned down.
  • Hydro-Electro Combo: Though she has all five elemental styles of jutsu, she noticeably makes effective use of her Water and Lightning jutsu together, almost always using Lightning immediately after using Water. She actually does this so often that when she uses Earth after Water at one point, Naruto notices how she is suddenly breaking her attack pattern.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Downplayed during her first fight with Naruto. After she washed him away and zaps him, she finds him seemingly unconscious. She checks on him by gently kicking him to see if he responds, and when he doesn't she thinks she has already defeated him, wondering if she overdid it against him. But it turns out this was actually a Shadow Clone of Naruto, which disappears when she lowers herself down to try kissing him again.
  • Kiss Diss: Her attempts at trying to force a kiss on Naruto are met with much resistance from him. At first it seems to be just because he isn't interested in making out with her, especially because she is his enemy, but then it becomes justified once it is made clear that if she succeeds in kissing him, it will kill him.
    • When she has Naruto pinned against a wall and is slowly lowering her head towards him for a kiss, Naruto shakes his head wildly to try to avoid her incoming lips, while also begging her to stop it and go away. Fūka defies this attempt though by swiftly clapping her hands against Naruto's cheeks, forcing him to hold still and pucker up himself. Naruto is only able to mumble out one last desperate plea to her, which she ignores before planting her lips against his in a deep passionate kiss.
    • When she believes she has defeated Naruto, finding him unconscious after she washed and zapped him away, she wipes his face clean of ash and lowers herself on top of him to attempt to kiss him again. But just as their faces are a few inches apart, "Naruto" disappeared in a puff of smoke, revealing it to just be another Shadow Clone. The surprises Fūka enough for Naruto to try to launch a sneak attack against her.
    • An example from both of them is after Fūka manages to successfully kiss him. When she ends up accidentally absorbing the Nine-Tails' chakra while draining Naruto, she finds it "too evil" for her and lets out a scream of pain before shoving Naruto away and cutting off the absorption. Immediately after this, Naruto himself wipes his lips with his hand, clearly disgusted by the kiss and wanting to get rid of the aftertaste of Fūka's lips.
  • Kiss of Death: She can drain chakra from her opponent with a kiss. The name of this technique ("execution by Kiss" in the sub and "Reaper Kiss" in the dub) implies that this results in the death of the victim when finished, but we never see this end result due to her never finishing her technique on Naruto.
  • Lady in Red: She wears a dress that is primarily red and isn't shy about showing it off.
  • Lascivious Beauty Mark: Appropriately for her flirtatious Femme Fatale personality, she has a beauty-mark under the left side of her lips, which also further emphasizes her lips and her focus on kissing techniques.
  • Leave The Two Love Birds Alone: This is a much more villainous example Played for Horror that is enforced thanks to her teammates Fudō and Fuen. When she successfully kisses Naruto and begins draining him of his chakra, Sakura and Sai quickly find the two of them and realize that Fūka was forcing a Kiss of Death on Naruto. Sakura tried to attack her while demanding she let Naruto go, but Fudō and Fuen quickly arrived and stopped her, and then trapped her and Sai to prevent them from interfering, thus allowing Fūka to continue her kiss with Naruto uninterrupted. Though thankfully shortly after this, Fūka ended it herself due to accidentally absorbing the Nine-Tails' chakra.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She has a long head of red hair that flows all the way to her waist, illustrating her feminity. She actually comments on how it took her years to grow it that long, and she becomes enraged if even a small amount of it is cut, regardless of it being an accident or not.
  • Mercy Kill: After Naruto survives her first kiss with him, she says that he would have died in pure bliss if he had just held still for a moment and gone along with her, but had now angered her. However, given the apparently painful effects of her Kiss of Death when she eventually successfully uses it on Naruto, it is unknown if she was being entirely truthful.
  • Moral Myopia:
    • She attempts to seduce Naruto to use her Kiss of Death on him, and when he refuses her offer she instead chooses to force a kiss on him, all while mockingly flirting with him. Once she discovers that she fell for a trick set by Naruto though, realizing she kissed one of his Shadow Clones, she suddenly gets mad at him for being able to steal a real kiss from her and for mockingly flirting with her afterwards over it, instead of the other way around.
    • She has killed who knows how many people and viciously attacks Naruto during their encounter, intending to add him to her list of victims. When Naruto fights back against her though and accidentally cuts off some of her hair in the process, resulting in the death of one of her bodies, she becomes enraged at him over it, saying "how dare he kill her" and claiming he has "no respect for women" and he will take responsibility for his actions against her.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She invades Naruto's personal space a lot throughout their fights, pinning him and touching his face. When the two first meet she even licks his cheek to get a taste of his chakra nature. When she finally catches Naruto by turning his legs to stone, she takes a moment to make herself comfortable with him, ignoring his desperate pleas to her to stay away from him, cuddling with him while he can't struggle against her or resist her advancements, and cupping his face and forcing him to look her in the eyes before forcing another kiss on him.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: She says it took her years to grow her hair and is very protective of it, calling it her most important feature, or even her very life force. When Naruto accidentally cuts off a small portion of her hair when he was actually aiming for her face, Fūka goes ballistic and screams that he will pay for it, and when he damages it further during their second fight she screams at him to stop messing up her hair until she knocks him out. It actually turns out that this is a justified reaction for her since it is revealed her hair is a Soul Jar that stores and controls all her alternate bodies she uses for different elemental chakra. Whenever it is damaged even slightly she loses at least one body, thus making her protective of it.
  • Not Good with Rejection: She is shown to actually be surprised and a bit disappointed when Naruto rejects her offer to share a kiss with him. When she quickly catches up to him she pins him against the wall, tells him that he never refuses a lady's advances, and whispers to him that she won't let him escape. She slowly loses patience with Naruto when he continues to avoid her attempts to kiss him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She uses all five of her elemental attacks in a certain pattern: fire, earth, water, lightning, wind, repeat. Thus, during her second fight with Naruto, he takes notice when she uses an earth jutsu after water, instead of her usual lightning. This serves as foreshadowing that she does not have access to all of her elements at once, needing to switch bodies to get the right element and if one of the bodies is killed she loses that element.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She has the most variety in terms of jutsu of all of Furido's minions and the power behind her moves and combos makes her a truly dangerous threat, capable of beating Naruto around like a ball for most of their fights with him only surviving because she's holding back so she can drain his chakra while he's still alive.
  • Prehensile Hair: When she uses a paralysis jutsu to turn Naruto's legs to stone her hair begins to move in the air on its own like snakes, essentially making her seem like Medusa. Her hair is actually her Soul Jar, which controls the bodies she uses to use different elemental chakra.
  • Projectile Kiss: Downplayed with her Spiralling Wind Ball jutsu. It is a whirlwind-like ball of wind-infused chakra she breaths into the palm of her hand before shooting it at her opponent with destructive force. Though it doesn't take the shape of a kiss or heart like most examples, she uses it to attack Naruto while mockingly flirting with him and claiming she wants to "teach him about the mysteries of the female body", almost making it seem like she is blowing destructive kisses at him.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When she pins Naruto against the wall before kissing him for the first time, she whispers to him while emphasizing each word in a seductive manner, with it being a little different depending on the version.
Fūka (sub): I... won't... let... you... get... away.
Fūka (dub): Now... you... are... mine.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: How her first fight with Naruto ends for her. Although she manages to defeat Naruto and successfully forces a deep kiss on him, her attempt to drain his chakra is unsuccessful since she accidentally absorbs the chakra from the Nine-Tails and finds it "too evil" for her, resulting in Naruto surviving and her attempts to kiss him rendered All for Nothing. Also, although she and the rest of Furido's team managed to successfully escape while keeping their plan unknown, she was arguably in the worst condition of all of them due to Naruto having cut her hair earlier in their fight and therefore killing at least one of her other bodies.
  • Rapid Aging: When Naruto accidentally cuts a small part of her hair off, she seemingly suffers from this, suddenly turning into an elderly version of herself and being Reduced to Dust. But when she appears behind Naruto again immediately after this and looks exactly like her usual self, Naruto wonders if it was just a weird substitution jutsu. It turns out that it wasn't, and what Naruto saw was one of Fūka's bodies dying due to her hair being damaged.
  • Right Behind Me: She pulls this on Naruto during their first encounter. After he rejects her offer to kiss, he runs away from her deep into the catacombs. After he believes he has escaped her, he stops and comments to himself how he is no good with girls like her who are "way too easy". He is unaware that as he is talking to himself, Fūka appears from the wall directly behind him using a jutsu and overhears what he says about her. She quickly makes her presence known to him by leaning seductively against his shoulder and giggling at him, leaving him startled by her sudden appearance from nowhere before quickly moving in front of him and pinning him against the wall.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her dress is backless, but her long hair usually still covers it.
  • Smug Smiler: She has a sly smug smile on her face throughout most of her fights with Naruto. She keeps it the whole time while flirting with him and attacking him, showing how she is so confident against him and mocking him for attempting to fight an unwinnable battle against her. At the end of her first fight with Naruto, once she has him immobilized and takes a moment to act out a mock romantic moment between them as if their fight was just a date, she is seen giving him a sly victorious smirk and giggling at him when all he can do is glare at her in response.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She usually speaks with a calm seductive tone, even as she is in the middle of battle and is trying to kill her enemies. Once she finally catches Naruto she tells him it is time for the two of them to finally share a kiss together in a happy seductive tone, then tells him she'll also be taking his soul in the same tone. When she becomes angered or annoyed she slowly loses her patience and reveals her true self.
  • Soul Jar:
    • When she steals chakra via a kiss she is also stealing the body of its owner for herself. The chakra and bodies are all stored and controlled in her hair, thus making her very protective of it.
    • Her hair is also the container for her own soul, she evidently having abandoned her original body some time ago.
  • Spit-Trail Kiss: Played for Horror with her and Naruto. When she finally successfully kisses Naruto and begins draining him of his chakra, she eventually pulls away from him with a line of chakra forming between their mouths like a spit-trail, feeding from Naruto's into Fūka's
  • Straw Feminist: Downplayed example with her, but some of her flirting towards Naruto implies at times how she sees women like her as superior or more important than men like him. She tells him he never wants to disappoint a woman by rejecting her advancements, essentially meaning men can never say "no" to women, teases him when he is shocked over her five jutsu elements by saying there is a lot boys like him don't understand about women and that she can help teach him, and calling him the "bane of women" when he cuts her hair, stating how important hair was to women.
  • Squish the Cheeks: She does this towards Naruto during their first encounter. After she pins him against the wall and whispers to him that she won't let him escape and that he's all hers now, she slowly begins to lower her head towards him for a kiss. Naruto shakes his head wildly trying to avoid her incoming lips while also begging her to stop and go away, only for her to quickly put an end to his resistance by simply clapping her hands against his cheeks, holding him still and forcing him to pucker up, with him only able to mumble out one final desperate but futile plea through his squished cheeks as she continues to lean in. She keeps holding him this way as she makes out with him until it he is revealed to be a Shadow Clone and disappears.
  • Suddenly Shouting: She does this after Naruto cuts off a small part of her hair during their first fight, going from calm Tranquil Fury to screaming that he will "PAY FOR IT".
  • "Take That!" Kiss: She forces several kisses on Naruto to steal his chakra and mockingly flirts with him during their fights.
    • The biggest example is their second kiss, where after she immobilizes him with a paralysis jutsu she tells him in a fake lovingly tone it is time for them to share a "nice hot kiss" together, and that as payment for it she'll take his soul, ignoring him as he desperately pleas with her to stay away from him before violently grabbing him by the shoulders to stop him from resisting and whispers for him to get ready. She then takes a moment to get comfortable with him by cuddling with him and forcing him to look into her eyes as a fake romantic Held Gaze by holding him by his cheeks and chin, giving him a smug sly smirk even as he glares at her and is visibly sweating with fear. She puts up this fake act of flirting with him and acting loving toward him just to sadistically taunt how helpless he is, effectively making it a Captive Date. After giggling to herself and softly whispering her technique, she leans in and forcibly locks lips with Naruto, and has a look of victory present in her eyes the whole time.
    • Ironically, Naruto managed to do this to her during their first kiss. After pinning him against a wall and squishing his cheeks to force him to pucker up, Fūka forces a passionate kiss on him but realizes after several seconds that nothing is happening. Naruto tricked her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones, which not only let him survive but since Naruto can share the experience his clone feels he was able to feel what a kiss with Fūka was like, essentially stealing a real kiss from her. He then mockingly blows her a kiss and comments that it wasn't bad, much to her anger.
  • Taken for Granite: Her paralysis jutsu can turn her victims' legs to stone until she wants otherwise.
  • Terms of Endangerment: She calls Naruto a few pet names while fighting him, like "cutie", "sweetie", or just "boy" or "kid".
  • Too Dumb to Live: Even after finding out she can't drain Naruto's chakra without draining the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra as well, she still tries to kiss him during their second battle. This leads to Naruto figuring out her weakness is her hair and destroying her.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When she tries to drain Naruto, she finds out the hard way that Bijuu chakra is this.
  • Tranquil Fury: After Naruto cuts some of her hair she becomes furious at him, glaring at him while speaking in a low dangerous tone before shouting that he will pay for it and using a Deadly Gaze on him to trap him. She appears to calm down quickly after this when she smiles and calmly suggests the two of them should kiss and make up, acting as if she has Easily Forgiven him, but it is clear she is still mad when she darkly tells him that as payment for the kiss she'll take his soul and violently grabs his shoulders to stop him from struggling against it. It is also implied that her decision to draw things out with Naruto by acting out a mock romantic moment with him is her taking further revenge on him by emphasizing his helplessness now.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Exaggerated in her case, but due to the true nature of her hair, and her protectiveness of it, pretty much any damage her hair receives is this for her, big or small.
    • During her first fight with Naruto, she manages to just barley dodge Naruto slashing at her face with a kunai, but a small portion of her hair is cut off instead. When this causes her current body to age rapidly and die via being Reduced to Dust, she becomes furious with Naruto for what he did, growling that he has "no respect for women" and has damaged her most important feature. This just confuses Naruto, since he doesn't know anything about her secret and it seems like she is overreacting over a minor accident.
    • Played straighter in their last fight. When Naruto continues to damage her hair, it drives her to the point where she knocks him out in a fit of rage. When Naruto regains consciousness shortly later, he is able to figure out why her hair is so important to her and grabs a handful of it, ripping out a large chunk of it and damaging her enough to reveal her true monstrous form.
  • The Vamp: She's flirty and likes to kill her victims with a Kiss of Death.
  • Villain Ball: She grabs it during her second fight with Naruto. After she knocks him out and has him at her mercy she could have finished him off any way she wanted to, but upon remembering his chakra is wind natured she decided to kiss him once again to stock up. This does sound fairly reasonable, but two things end up making her fall into this trope:
    • One: She already kissed him in her previous fight and tried to drain his chakra, but failed because she ended up absorbing the chakra from the Nine-tails too and couldn't handle the "evil chakra." Apparently, she either forgot about this incident, thought the Fox was just passing through, or figured that now that she knew about it she could handle it without being taken by surprise.
    • Two: After locking lips with her unconscious enemy she fantasizes about having all his incredible power for herself and draws the kiss out longer than usual instead of having the effect begin almost instantly like in their last fight. Because of this, Naruto eventually wakes up during the kiss without her noticing and quickly figures out how to beat her. So her taking her time led to her own defeat and death.
  • Villainesses Want Heroes: Subverted; she flirts with Naruto throughout their battles and kisses him several times, even pretending the two of them are lovers out on a romantic date together at one point, but she is not in love with him, only wanting his vast supply of rare Wind-type chakra and possibly his body.
  • Villainous Face Hold: When she first attempts to kiss Naruto while she has him pinned against a wall, he tries to avoid her approaching lips by shaking his head wildly and begging her to stop, only for her to clap her hands against his cheeks, forcing him to stay still and pucker up. Later, after she finally catches Naruto in their first fight, she cuddles with him by gently holding him by his face and chin, forcing him to look her in the eyes in a mocking Held Gaze. She keeps holding him like this even as she forces a deep kiss on him and begins draining him of his chakra.
  • Woman Scorned: Her flirtatious façade cracks for the first time after Naruto tricks her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones, essentially stealing a real kiss from her and mocking her over it. She angrily growls that he would have died in bliss if he had just gone along with her for a minute, but now he had ticked her off.
  • You Taste Delicious: She can taste what type of chakra someone has by licking them. She surprises Naruto when she licks his cheek at the start of their first fight, instead of attacking him like he was expecting.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Before her second kiss with Naruto, she tells him she'll take his soul as "payment" for their kiss.
What do ya say... let's share a little kiss. And when I do your soul will be mine.

Arrival of the Three-Tails arc

    Guren

Guren

Voiced by: Eri Miyajima (JP), Erin Fitzgerald (EN), Rebeca Gómez (LA Spanish)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 89

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guren.png

Guren (紅蓮, Guren) is a kunoichi from Otogakure and the female leader of Orochimaru's subordinates. She uses the unique Crystal Release brand of techniques. She wants to be Orochimaru's next body. After Orochimaru found Sasuke, he no longer had any use for Guren until she is called by Orochimaru to escort a boy name Yuukimaru alive to the lake where the Three-Tails Sanbi lives.Yuukimaru is young and his body is weak. He falls ill during the trip and starts to grow feelings for Guren. As Yuukimaru can somehow control the Sanbi, Guren is forced to see Kabuto using Yuukimaru's powers to the limit, putting his health in jeopardy. In the end, Guren chooses to forget Orochimaru and flee with Yuukimaru in a place where Orochimaru will not be.

  • Action Girl: She's capable of going one-on-one with Isobu, the Three-Tails, can simultaneously fight-off Kakashi and Naruto, even while severely exhausted, she can slap Rock Lee around in taijutsu, and even a Smug Snake of Kabuto's caliber acknowledged that she could kill him anytime she wanted to.
  • Anti-Villain: Although she starts out rough, she eventually fights to protect and keep Yuukimaru safe, even in spite of the fact that as an Oto-nin having such emotions is exploited and preyed upon by Kabuto. Ultimately, her emotions win out over her fealty and gradually work towards fixing what she can and working with the heroes as a result. It also helps that Orochimaru had cast her aside after being raised to be his next vessel, giving her a lack of purpose that Yuukimaru filled.
  • The Atoner: She wants to make up for killing Yuukimaru's mother by taking care of him herself.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Gozu is fiercely loyal to her because she cared for him when Orochimaru was planning to cast him away, and he saves her life in the end.
  • The Bus Came Back: Can be seen with Yuukimaru as part of the crowd outside the Leaf village gates in episode 479 of Shippuden.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: She doesn't remember saving Gozu, which earned her his Undying Loyalty. It also takes her a while to realize she killed Yuukimaru's mother, but when she does, she almost breaks down.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Guren can convert her lifeforce into more chakra for her to use during combat.
  • Co-Dragons: With Kabuto, for Orochimaru.
  • Crystal Prison: Her ability is to crystalize anything. This means she can turn people into crystals right down to the cellular level. The only ones known to have escaped from this jutsu are Hinata, who surrounded herself with a protective chakra cloak, the Three-Tails a monster created from chakra, and a breed of Shino's kikaichu, that he specifically bred to fight her, using the hatchlings from a female, that just barely managed to survive the first contact with Guren's jutsu.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Discussed, Kiba initially believes her Crystal-release ability is earth-release, and although unproven, the fact that crystal techniques have shown a weakness towards Lightning techniques lends a bit of credence to the theory.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Over the course of the arc, she gradually warms up to Yuukimaru.
  • Enemy Mine: After she and Naruto are swallowed by Isobu, she works together with him.
  • Gemstone Assault: One application of her ability is turning the moisture in the air into snowflake-shaped shurikens for a Flechette Storm.
  • Green and Mean: She wears a green dress and is a villain, albeit a more sympathetic one. The "mean" part gets dropped eventually.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn: After being fed up by Kabuto's treatment of Yuukimaru.
  • Leitmotif: Also called Gurren.
  • Logical Weakness: As her jutsu crystalizes physical matter, pure energy, such as raw chakra, or Fire and Lightning Release jutsus are not only immune to it, but she's actually weak against them.
  • Mama Bear: Becomes one to Yukimaru.
  • Morality Pet: Caring for Yuukimaru is the first step on her path to redemption.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When she realized that the woman she killed years ago was Yuukimaru's mother.
  • No-Sell: She can do this to pretty much any physical matter used against her, as shown when she casually turns the new Toad Water Gun collaboration jutsu, that Naruto worked on with Gamatatsu, into crystal, and then into a Crystal Dragon.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. She shares her name with one of Orochimaru’s prisoners in his northern hideout.
  • Power at a Price: Similarly to Guy and Lee, she can release two tenketsu points in her body to temporarily gain access to extra chakra, but doing so shortens her life span.
  • Power Crystal: She use can create a Crystal Prism that focuses her chakra into a laser beam.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Naruto calls her out on working for Orochimaru and using Yuukimaru, she attempts one of these, by reversing it to him and Konoha, saying that the village that created a jinchuriki out of the Nine-Tails, has no right to preach against them trying to do the same. Naruto has none of it, however, revealing that he is the jinchuriki in question.
  • You Killed My Father: She killed Yuukimaru's mother, but she never knew who she was, until the end.

Tsuchigumo Clan arc

    Hotaru

Hotaru

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi (JP), Kari Wahlgren (EN)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 144

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hotaru_2014.jpeg

Hotaru is the pupil of the six-tail host Utakata in the dedicated arc. The latter denies being her master but taught her a few techniques nonetheless (although some unintentionally...) She has a powerful and dangerous technique sealed inside her. She is deceived by a man named Shiranami, who wants to activate this technique. Utakata saves her, and acknowledges her as his student, before being captured by Pain.

  • Broken Pedestal: Shiranami turns out to be completely and utterly evil, and intending to use her to gain access to his technique.
  • Hot for Teacher: She seems to like Utakata more than a little, and insists that he teach her ninjutsu.
  • Instant Expert: Utakata deliberately teaches her a high-level technique from the get-go so that she'll get frustrated enough to give up and leave him alone, but she actually succeeds!
  • Making a Splash: Hotaru can, much to Utakata's chagrin, use water techniques.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Filler or not, she is probably the bustiest girl of the series after Tsunade, and the animators are not afraid to emphasize it. When she bares her back to reveal the technique placed inside her, her cleavage is unsubtle, to say the least.
  • The Bus Came Back: She makes a cameo (with some lines of dialogue no less) in the Fourth Shinobi World War.

    Shiranami

Shiranami

Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (JP), Matthew Mercer (EN)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 145

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiranami.png

A member of the Tsuchigumo clan that desires the clan’s Forbidden technique for its destructive potential.

  • Big Brother Is Watching: One of his techniques allows him to spy on others through a wall tapestry.
  • Child Prodigy: He was hailed as a brilliant shinobi from childhood, where he already surpassed his father, who was also known for his skill.
  • Hypocrite: Thinks he’s better than Utakata because the latter abandoned his village, while Shiranami is willingly endangering his clansmen for his own personal gain.
  • Invisibility: Shiranami excels at camouflage techniques.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means “white-crested waves” which is a Japanese euphemism for “thief”.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Killed his own father to get closer to the Tsuchigumo clan kinjutsu.
  • Semantic Superpower: Shiranami created a technique that’s basically a jack-of-all-trades, which uses letters he draws in the air to create fire, blades of wind, create explosions or immobilize someone. The scariest ability of this technique is to outright control people making them into Shiranami’s puppets.

Konoha History arc

    Condor

Condor

Voiced by: Takeharu Onishi (JP), Benjamin Diskin (EN)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 181

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/condor.png

Condor is an ostrich that Team 7 was once tasked to retrieving. At some point after Sasuke's defection, Condor escapes again, apparently taking several levels in badass in the process.

  • Action Pet: He's an ostrich who taught himself ninjutsu! And he's at least Chunin-level!
  • Beware the Silly Ones: First appears as a random animal that Team Kakashi has to escort, and is entirely Played for Laughs, pecking people for comic relief. Next time he appears, he can talk and has become pretty skilled at ninjutsu.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers one to Kotetsu until Izumo shows up.
  • Feathered Fiend: Type D, being portrayed as a secondary antagonist in the first episode he appears in, and a primary antagonist the second time.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He wears three pink ribbons on his neck.
  • The Rival: Considers himself to be one to Naruto.
  • Talking Animal: Also taught himself how to talk.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In between his first and second appearances.

    Yaoki and Korobi

Yaoki and Korobi

Yaoki voiced by: Takashi Onozuka (JP), Wally Wingert (EN)
Korobi voiced by: Hiroto Torihata (JP), Todd Haberkorn (EN)

Debut: Shippūden Episode 182

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yaokipng.png
Yaoki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/korobipng.png
Korobi

From the filler episode "Gaara's Bond", they are two Suna shinobi paired with Gaara for a mission. They're both terrified of him since this takes place very, very recently after his Heel–Face Turn and they remember the things he's done. Both of them are puppeteers, though they also can fight hand to hand, as shown when helping fight Gaara's would-be assassins with sticks.

  • Carry a Big Stick: While without their puppets, the pair makes do with a pair of clubs for combat.
  • Heel Realization: Naruto, on the way to help Gaara, calls them out on abandoning their "friend". Korobi quietly questions Yaoki about their actions, and they go back and help Gaara, telling him they're his friends. They also reaffirm the statement at the end of the episode.
  • Lovable Coward: Not serious cowardliness, per say, since many Sand Shinobi had been scared of Gaara for years and he'd only recently done a Heel–Face Turn as of the time of the episode (and the cowardliness in no way applies to the mission). The loveable part comes after their Heel Realization and they go help Naruto save Gaara.
  • Making a Splash: Their puppets have built-in water hoses.
  • Repeat What You Just Said: Gaara says this, and Yaoki quietly apologizes for leaving him to the assassins earlier. Gaara does the "no, before that" and the guys realize what he really wants them to say:
Yaoki and Korobi: We're your friends!
  • Spanner in the Works: Not hugely, since Naruto was doing most of the work, but them coming back and helping Gaara, while saying he's their friend, clearly unsettled the squad of assassins at least. Their behavior may also have been part of the reason for Gaara's leniency against the people who tried to kill him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: A very mild version, but the puppets they're carrying are used by the assassin squad against Gaara, and were apparently given to them for that exact purpose since the puppets are perfect suited to trap him. One would of course wonder why the squad wouldn't have carried those themselves (outside of Korobi and Yaoki being closer to Gaara, physically).

    Kosuke Maruboshi

Kosuke Maruboshi

Voiced by: Junpei Endo (JP, young), Yutaka Nakano (JP, present), Doug Stone (EN)

Debut: Shippuden Episode 190

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ninja_kosuke.png

An old man who appears in two Filler episodes. He is known as Konoha's Strongest Genin as he refused to be promoted to Jonin even after fifty years of service for personal reasons. Naruto is at first dismissive of him for his age, but learns to admire and respect him after seeing his combat prowess.

  • Almighty Janitor: Easily Jonin level despite getting on with the years and his official status as a Genin.
  • Cool Old Guy: Pleasant, friendly, humble, and always willing to lend a hand. But don't you dare attack Konoha in any shape or form, or he'll lay the smackdown on your ass!
  • Eyes Always Shut: They're almost always seen shut in a relaxed state to emphasize his seemingly harmless and grandfatherly exterior.
  • Handicapped Badass: Lost a leg at some point so he has a prosthetic... that can come off to reveal a hidden sword before exploding!
  • Improbable Weapon User: Brings cooking tools to a ninja fight! A bit subverted in that he rarely actually swings them around and the wok is there for blocking projectiles, but still...
  • Kill It with Water: Trained under the Second Hokage who was a specialist, allowing him to use highly advanced techniques such as the Water Style: Water Dragon Jutsu to such an extent that it overpowered a similar technique that it was weak against.
  • My Greatest Failure: When he was young he made a reckless decision during an important mission that cost the lives of his teammates. As a result, he refused to be promoted beyond a Genin as he felt that he was undeserving of the title.
  • Old Master: Trained under almost every deceased Hokage who even taught him many of their secret techniques. He's extremely proficient in taijutsu despite his age and can overpower an Earth-type Ninjutsu with a Water-type Ninjutsu of the same level despite the type disadvantage. He's able to fight on par with the Sannin, Kakashi's father, and the previous Ino-Shika-Cho! Able to go toe to toe with dozens of other ninjas a fourth of his age and kick their asses all the while.
  • Secret-Keeper: One of the few people who knew who Naruto's father was.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Attempts this in order to have Naruto relay important info back to headquarters. Subverted in that Naruto comes back in a nick of time for the finale. It's also part of the village creed, in that the next generation (the Genin) must be protected by the seniority at all cost, in contrast to the other nations who use them as cannon fodder.

    Hanare

Hanare

Voiced by: Hana Takeda (JP), Wendee Lee (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hanare_naruto.png

She is a kunoichi from Jomae village, a smaller Hidden village that specializes in espionage. Hanare grew up outside the village so she couldn’t reveal anything about it to other nations and was sent to spy on Konohagakure.

  • Accidental Kiss: Gets one with Kakashi after Team Seven spies on them. It leads to Kakashi accidentally copying one of her special techniques.
  • Crippling Overspecialisation: A superb spy and infiltrator, but not a fighter.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In order for her to be the perfect spy for Jomae village, the village head kept her apart from the village so she couldn’t reveal anything about it. This meant she grew up in isolation, without friends or family, leading her to crave a family and a home of her own.
  • Defector from Decadence: Tired of her life as a spy, she erases the information she has on Konoha after she has been exchanged for a captured leaf shinobi, opting instead to leave the shinobi life behind since she cannot stand remaining so isolated from society as she was during her childhood.
  • Determinator: She doesn’t utter a word during torture, forcing the leaf to resort to Mind Reading to learn her secrets.
  • Girl of the Week: The amount of Ship Tease she gets with Kakashi is stupefying: He’s made her personal escort in Konoha, gets into an Accidental Kiss and having met her when they were kids. Team 7 firmly believes that Kakashi is out on a date with her, while he in fact is guarding a potential security threat.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Justified, during a prisoner exchange between Jomae and Konoha which develops into an ambush, she opts not to fight Kakashi when he corners her.
  • Magic Eye: Subverted, she has learned to perform handseals with the movements of her eye, enabling her to perform a single ninjutsu without using her hands and thus not alerting her target to her actions.
  • The Mole: She's a kunoichi from a village that specializes in espionage and is assigned to spy on Konoha.
  • Rescue Romance: She developed romantic feelings for Kakashi when he rescued her as a child in a chance meeting.

Adventures at Sea arc

    Shizuka

Shizuka

Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shizuka_naruto.png

A kunoichi from Nadeshiko village, a ninja amazon village, intent on making Naruto her future husband due to an old agreement between her master and Jiraiya.

  • Action Girl: Not surprising since she's a kunoichi, but she specifically tells her bodyguard to stand back and let her deal with an unwelcome and violent suitor herself (which had happened 98 times before).
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Subverted, Nadeshiko village only have women, so the kunoichi go abroad to find men that are strong enough to defeat them in combat and then marry them. Additionally, Shizuka herself doesn’t want to marry Naruto simply because he’s strong, but is forced to fight him due to an old agreement between her master and Jiraiya, which stipulated that if they couldn't finish their own fight, their disciples would do so in their stead.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Very much so. Outside of Flashbacks Shizuka rarely shows emotions other than shock. It’s only at the end of the episode she cracks a smile.
  • Blow You Away: Shizuka uses wind release to enhance her close combat strikes and kicks.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a sizable bust that is emphasized by the Cleavage Window in her outfit. Ironically, Naruto doesn’t even notice it.
  • Dance Battler: Some of her techniques have their names based on dancing and resemble a pirouette.
  • Dude Magnet: Her beauty, strength and position in Nadeshiko Village makes her highly desirable as a wife, which gets her in trouble since it also gets her the attention of villains like Kokuyō.
  • Kick Chick: Her dropkicks can shatter metal and One-Hit Kill Mechas.
  • Meaningful Name: "Shizuka" means "quiet", referring to her stoic demeanor.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The relationship she had with her lover Sagiri was based on him being a good man and kind to her, not his strength. Which was the reason that some of the villagers didn’t believe it was a good match and murdered Sagiri. At the end of the episode, it's implied that Shizuka eventually starts to look for someone new to be her husband.
  • The Stoic: Has a stoic and serious demeanor and doesn't emote much.

    Ganryū

Ganryū

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ganryu_naruto.png

A Jonin from Kirigakure. Ten years prior to his appearance, Ganryū and his team allied with Iwagakkure to retrieve a scroll stolen by Kumogakure. Iwa betrayed them and killed his teammates, but Ganryū survived and developed a deep hatred for Iwa as a result. Prior to the outbreak of the Fourth Shinobi World War, he gathered a group of kiri nin who had similar sentiments and attacked a delegation from Iwagakure, Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: Ganryū is mentioned early in the Paradice Life On A Boat arc by other Kiri shinobi, about 22 episodes before appearing in person, while they discuss that he won’t be happy with the allegiance with the other major shinobi villages.
  • Cool Sword: Ganryū wields a cleaver-like sword in battle.
  • A Father to His Men: He values his teammates highly and is willing to take the blame for the attack on the Iwa delegation to let the others evade punishment.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates Iwagakure with a passion, justified given his backstory. But he loves the possibility for peace more and does outgrow his hatred and emphasize with the other villages’ losses in the past conflicts.
  • Informed Ability: He’s generally jumped up to be a big deal, with Chojuro, one of the most powerful shinobi in Kirigakure, thinking he’d be hard-pressed against him. Problem is that Ganryū himself doesn’t do that much fighting. He manages to harm Akatsuchi with his sword, but that was in an ambush where the big guy wasn’t trying to fight back.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Ganryū genuinely wants peace for the shinobi world, problem is he’s trying to make the Kage considering it by trying to off two diplomats from another village, one of whom is the grandchild of the Third Tsuchikage.
  • One-Shot Character: Surprisingly averted for a filler character, he gets mentioned early in the series prior to his physical introduction and later, during Gaara’s speech before the united Shinobi army in the anime, Ganryū reappears to try and smoothen things over between old enemies. He doesn’t appear again.
  • Tragic Keepsake: His deceased team all wore green bracelets and Ganryū keeps his as a reminder of his team. It later turns out that one of the Bracelets was collected by Iwa after the event and then later sent to Kiri as proof of the Third Tsuchikage’s sincerity and commitment to the alliance.

From the Chikara (Power) arc, it is a clone of Naruto in his Four-Tailed V2 Fox Cloak created when Kabuto accidentally infected Naruto with his Clone Snakes jutsu. The clone rampages, nearly killing Naruto, before being restrained. It later fights Naruto atop the Ama no Hoko and seemingly falls to its death, but returns as a hydra-like monster.

Land of This two-parter

    Tatewaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_219_8.png

A ronin formerly from the Land of Iron who served as the head of security for the daimyo of the Land of This before his life was cut short following the nation's destruction by Sasori and Deidara. Years later, Tatewaki was resurrected by Kabuto to fight in the Fourth Shinobi World War until a reunion with Naruto whom he befriended back then allows him to break free from the jutsu's hold and return to the afterlife.

  • Back from the Dead: Revived by Kabuto using Edo Tensei to fight in the Fourth Shinobi World War. Fortunately, his hearing from Naruto that Shu and Chiyo are alive and doing well allows Tatewaki to break free of the jutsu's hold on his own and return to the afterlife with no regrets.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He gave his life to buy time for Naruto and Team 10 to get Shu and Chiyo to safety from the Akatsuki's rampage.
  • Honor Before Reason: He's revealed to dislike how the standing treaties revolve around using hostages to keep peace, believing that a traditional one would be more stable. It's for this reason that he allows Naruto and Team 10 to bring Shu back to his home nation.
  • Master Swordsman: He's a skilled swordsman and a masterful enough tactician that he's able to predict almost all of Naruto's moves.
  • Posthumous Character: He died three years before the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
  • Spellblade: like many samurai, Tatewaki is capable of channeling chakra through his sword. His chakra control proves so great that Karui considers his skills similar to that of a shinobi.
  • Sword Beam: He's capable of unleashing waves of these made of chakra.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the daimyo he served. Even when his master is killed, Tatewaki chooses to stay and fight Sasori even if he is outmatched.

  • Foe Romance Subtext: He's revealed to harbor feelings for Chiyo despite technically being enemies, prompting him to ask Naruto and Team Asuma to help him save her from the Akatsuki's rampage.

The Path of Friends arc

    Shira

Voiced by: Yuhei Takagi (JP), Ray Chase (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shira.png

Shira is a highly experienced Taijutsu user who wasn't a Shinobi because he couldn't use Genjutsu and/or Ninjutsu, until Gaara reformed his father's laws. He goes into the 2nd Chunnin Exam with his team where he wants as many Sand Ninja to graduate as possible. He meets and befriends Rock Lee (whose similarity is not lost on him.), and so skilled that he became Gaara's trainer in Taijutsu.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: For once in the series, it's not parallel to Naruto, but to Rock Lee. The laws of The 4th Kazekage prevented anyone not knowing Genjutsu or Ninjutsu to enter Ninja Academy.
  • Always Someone Better: He can be considered one to Rock Lee. While Shira works hard in a similar fashion to Lee, the former's Taijutsu abilities are entirely self-taught and he manages to overwhelm Lee for a brief time in their fight. He was also able to No-Sell Neji's "Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms"note , while Lee is never shown to be able to successfully defend against any of the latter's attacks.
  • Awesome by Analysis: Shown to be very observant and intelligent, as Shira elaborately deducing his enemies' strengths and weaknesses after seeing them fight only once.
  • Badass Normal: Before he even begins training at the academy, he can already destroy rock with his bare hands.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the second Chunnin Exam, Shira exchanges his farewells with his teammates and departs towards the Land of Wind to fight in the Battalion.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Shira is entirely self-taught in Taijutsu, to the point where he can shatter rock without the use of Chakra.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Justified, since Shira can’t use either nin- nor genjutsu and isn’t shown using ranged weaponry, he’s forced to fight melee.
  • Covered in Scars: Shira has multiple scars across his body, one of them across his throat, which are most likely gained from his training regimen.
  • Extreme Doormat: Takes a lot of crap from fellow sand ninjas during the 2nd Chunnin Exam, but doesn't retaliate or even get angry. Instead he takes it as a sign that he needs to continue to improve himself.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a scar on his left lower jaw, another across his throat, and two on his body; but is one of the kindest characters in the series.
  • Genius Bruiser: He was able to prevent Lee from using the "Eight Gates" by subtlety blocking the latter's tenketsu note , and is capable of creating his own, unique Taijutsu techniques.
  • Hot-Blooded: Downplayed as while Shira does go overboard with his training like Lee, he's nevertheless calm and composed.
  • Hunk: Shira possesses a muscular sculpted build combined with his good looks and rugged scars make him a hunk.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Like Lee, Shira is this due to specializing in Taijutsu.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: According to Neji, Shira's large and muscular physique is ideal in Taijutsu due to being able to absorb physical blows much easier than Lee's smaller, thinner built.
  • The Mentor: To Gaara after having to witness the caliber of Shira's Taijutsu skill. Gaara not only revokes the law that forbids those who can't use Ninjutsu/Genjutsu to attend the Academy but hired Shira as a personal coach to tutor him into improving his own Taijutsu skill. This is shown in a flashback where Shira is training Gaara to rely less on his automatic sand defense and more on actual direct combat skills.
  • Nice Guy: For all the crap he endured throughout his childhood and in the current time, Shira doesn't blame anyone other than himself for the life he lived.
  • No-Sell: He successfully block Neji's "Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms" with little to no repercussion.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Shira rarely smiles throughout his appearances, but does so in his interactions with either Gaara or Rock Lee.
  • Shadow Archetype:
    • To Rock Lee. Both are born with the inability to use Ninjutsu and/or Genjutsu and were ostracize by their peers, but preserve on to become a splendid Shinobi who specializes in Taijutsu. While Rock Lee's Taijutsu was cultivated due to Might Guy's personal training methods and fatherly support, Shira's was cultivateed entirely on his own methods with no support from anyone till his mid-teens.
    • He's also one to Neji Hyuga in their mannerisms and fighting style.
  • Super Mode: Shira's unique Taijutsu skill, "Seven Heavens Breathing Method", involves gathering up large amounts of oxygen to increase his lung capacity fourfold. This allows him increase his physical power in a similar manner to the users of the "Eight Gates"; yet its unknown if it has repercussions.
  • Training from Hell: Did that on his own. If Gaara's reaction is any indication, it seems to pay off.
  • The Stoic: In contrast to Lee's personality and Taijutsu stylenote , Shira always carries a calm air. Whether diplomatically or in the heat of battle.
  • The Quiet One: Shira rarely raises his voice unless necessary. It's also incorporated in his unique Taijutsu style, "Silent Fist"; which allows Shira to render his movements completely silent by cloaking himself in chakra, thus making him nearly unpredictable in combat.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Due to his previous injuries, Shira wasn't able to use his Taijutsu to its fullest extent against Rock Lee.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • To Rock Lee; as the former fully acknowledge Shira's abilities as a Shinobi on par with Might Guy and Neji Hyūga in their first and final fight.
    • A subtle one to Neji Hyūga; as he privately mentions of wishing to battle against Shira after the latter easily defend against his "Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms", and acknowledge Shira's abilities to be a waste as an enemy.
  • Younger Than They Look: Due to his scars and calm expressions, Shira could be seen as a man in his early 20's while he's around the same age as Team Guy.

    Mikoshi

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (JP), Robbie Daymond (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mikoshi.png

Mikoshi is a genin who partook in the Chunin Exams with his teammates Matsuri and Yukata. He appears in the new Chunin Exams fillers.

  • Foil: To Yukata. He takes the exam seriously and acts mature, while Yukata is carefree and somewhat childish. Mikoshi is intelligent, while Yukata is The Ditz
  • Graceful Loser: After his team lost to Shira's, he accepted defeat and bore no grudges.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "divine palanquin" and fits into a Japanese night festival theme like his teammates' names.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite normally being level-headed and mature, he joined the brawl in the cafeteria before the second exam, rather than stay out of it or try to stop it.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he falls into quicksand.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: While his intelligence hasn't been displayed very often, he qualifies for this trope when it does.
  • Two Girls and a Guy: He's the guy of the group.

    Yukata

Voiced by: Tomomi Nakatsuka (JP), Stephanie Sheh (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yukata.png

Yukata is a rather clueless kunoichi who first appeared in the Fourth Shinobi World War with Matsuri. She later made a reappearance and was on a team with her and Mikoshi during the Chunin Exams filler.

  • Best Friend: Matsuri's. They almost always appear together and always team up.
  • Blow You Away: She is stated to use wind techniques during the Fourth Shinobi war.
  • The Ditz: She has shown be very dumb and/or clueless at times, such as not realizing who the Tsuchikage is, or not being able to answer any of the questions during the written section of the exams.
  • Fangirl: Of Gaara, like Matusri, complete with Squee.
  • Foil: To Mikoshi. See his entry for details.
  • The Load: Downplayed in the Chunin Exams. Her obliviousness and ditziness in general, despite giving her team an advantage in the written section, led to them being the last one to leave during the elimination race. Later on, during the second stage, her lack of stamina compared to the others held them back in the sandstorm and when fleeing from an enemy.
  • Rank Up: She is seen wearing a Suna flak jacket in the Allied Shinobi forces, meaning she was promoted to chunin from the exams. An unusual example, as her time in a lower rank was shown in episodes ''after' her debut.
  • Shipper on Deck: She teases Temari (with Matsuri) over her crush on Shikamaru.

Other filler episodes

    Mecha-Naruto

Voiced by: Junko Takeuchi (JP), Maile Flanagan (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mecha_naruto_anime.png

A robotic double of Naruto created by Orochimaru and Kabuto as a means to capture the Nine-Tails for themselves, it ended up falling into the hands of Akatsuki. Note that it's originally a character of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series and his story is very much different from his game counterpart.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The minute it's activated, it goes on a rampage and destroys Orochimaru's lab before escaping, being captured by the Akatsuki, and reprogrammed to work for them.
  • Arm Cannon: It has Gatling guns mounted in its forearms, and its fingers can function as machine guns.
  • Do-Anything Robot: Mecha-Naruto is stuffed full of a ridiculous amount of weapons, and it's implied that Pain upgraded him with the Asura Path.
  • Evil Knockoff: A robotic clone of Naruto, designed to also be a suitable vessel for the Nine-Tails.
  • Eye Beams: Can use the Naruto Beam, which was powerful enough to destroy Orochimaru's lab and a good portion of the Leaf Village.
  • Mythology Gag: The general plot of the two-parter was more-or-less ripped right from the Invasion of Pain arc, with bits of the Sasuke Retrieval arc thrown in partway through.
  • Powered Armor: It layers itself over Naruto as a parody of Iron Man's armor.
  • Primal Stance: Spends a lot of time crawling on all fours even outside of KYUBI Mode.
  • Secret Test of Character: Itachi set up a genjutsu that would ally Mecha-Naruto with the Leaf village if Naruto still considered Sasuke as a friend.
  • Shout-Out: The way Mecha-Naruto covers Naruto's body and the HUD that appears are references to the Iron Man Films.
  • Telescoping Robot: He can extend an absurd array of weapons from his body that logically shouldn't be able to fit inside him, especially considering how he's capable of layering over Naruto.
  • Transforming Mecha: He has a vehicle mode and a jet mode.

    Menma Namikaze/Uzumaki

Voiced by: Junko Takeuchi (JP), Maile Flanagan (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/latest_06.png

An alternate version of Menma Uzumaki, the antagonist of Naruto the Movie: Road to Ninja, who never turned evil. He appears as part of Tenten's Infinite Tsukuyomi dream in the anime

  • Alternate Self: He's a version of Menma Uzumaki from Naruto the Movie: Road to Ninja who was never evil, and thus to Naruto Uzumaki as well.
  • Animal Battle Aura: As Kurama's jinchuriki, he can use Nine Tails Chakra Mode and Tailed Beast Mode.
  • Celibate Hero: Unlike Naruto, he knows that girls are attracted to him. He just isn't interested in romance.
  • Chick Magnet: Both Sakura and Hinata are in love with him.
  • Detect Evil: He can use Kurama's power to sense negative emotions.
  • Dream People: He's a product of Tenten's Infinite Tsukuyomi, though the Dream Land he's from is mostly identical to the Genjutsu World from Road to Ninja.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's insightful and intelligent, and one of Konoha's strongest ninja.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Menma inherited his father Minato's hairstyle.
  • The Leader: Menma is the de facto leader of the Konoha 11.
  • The Stoic: Menma is serious and aloof, though he cares about his friends.
  • Sudden Name Change: He's referred to as "Menma Uzumaki" on Studio Perrot's blog and concept art, but called Menma Namikaze in the credits.
