Qixing

The Qixing is a group of seven influential merchants and business leaders who serve as the de facto governing body of Liyue, whose job is to enforce the will of Rex Lapis, the Geo Archon, who only appears once a year during the Rite of Descension, during which one of the Qixing presides over the rites, whereupon he gives predictions and judgments that shape Liyue’s business trends for the rest of the year.

    General Tropes
  • Badass Crew: Not all but some of their representatives like Ningguang and Keqing and even some personnel like Ganyu have a Vision and can actively fight, although they always rely on and favor diplomacy first like their colleagues.
  • The Ghost: Only three of the seven Qixing have appeared in-game as of v 4.2, over three years since they were introduced. This is a particularly extreme example, as players know nothing about them other than that they exist. No names, no known role. You'd be forgiven for thinking that there were only three Qixing. What makes this particularly noticeable is that there have been several festivals organized by the Qixing as part of Version Events, including one where the plot was that Keqing was overworked and needed to take a break. Note that Keqing is responsible for land development and not public events. You'd think that there would be another member of the Qixing who would be at least partly responsible for that, or at the very least would be willing to split the work more evenly, but if there is they're never mentioned.
  • The Government: Liyue is a plutocratic oligarchy, with the Qixing serving as the legislative branch while the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which oversees the Millelith, is the executive branch.
  • Merchant Prince: Powerful business people who run the city.
  • Non-Idle Rich: They personally manage both the city and their own thriving businesses and consist of playable characters that can go on adventures with the Traveler.
  • Rule of Seven: Qixing means "seven stars", namely the Big Dipper.
  • Stellar Name: Each member takes a title after the Chinese name of one of the Big Dipper's stars.

"Fame and fortune is only a season, it is the moment we should embrace."

Rarity: 4★
Element: Geo
Weapon: Catalyst
Constellation: Opus Aequilibrium, the Balancing Creation

The Tianquan of the Qixing, arguably the wealthiest woman in all of Liyue, and proprietress of the Jade Chamber, a floating mansion hovering in the skies over Liyue. While most cityfolk have heard of her, rumor has it that she knows anything that happens within her region. However, while Ningguang isn't above showing off how wealthy she is, there seems to be more to her than meets the eye, as the Traveler finds out during the Archon Quest.

Ningguang flaunts her wealth in the most painful way, pelting her foes with gemstones that generate stacks of Star Jades, of which she can hold up to three at once and which are expended to further increase the projectiles of her charged attacks, as well as striking from a safe distance, as her Elemental Skill, Jade Screen, creates the eponymous veil of energy which damages enemies upon creation, can block projectile attacks, and can be consumed to increase the hits of her Elemental Burst, Starshatter, a volley of gemstones unleashed over a wide area.note
  • Barefoot Poverty: Zhongli's voice-over for her implies that she used to walk barefoot during her younger, poverty-stricken years.
Zhongli: [...] I'm reminded of the time that she used to walk barefoot from Yaoguang Shoal to the south wharf, trying to sell her wares as she went. Time is cruel to humans.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her Skill creates a mystical veil that blocks projectile attacks (with endurance based on a fraction of Ningguang's Max HP), and as a Geo Vision holder any elemental reaction will crystalize into shields that negate damage. In Genius Invokation TCG, it will also create a shield for the other character cards in your deck.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: Downplayed. She's a Catalyst user who fights primarily through pelting her enemies with gemstones, and she's one of the effective rulers of Liyue, but she's a businesswoman first and foremost, always thinking about things in terms of Mora and having no issue spying on the populace. That said, she's kind to and cares for the children she uses for said espionage, and she does genuinely care for Liyue, to the point that she willingly sacrificed the Jade Chamber, for which she spent unfathomable amounts of Mora, to put a stop to a reawakened Osial, and suggests she would have done it again with her second one to deal with Beisht but for Shenhe's intervention.
  • Berserk Button: Probably due to her impoverished youth, Ningguang has no patience for people who try to manipulate or harm children, as seen in one route of her Hangout Event tree. Doing so instantly puts the offender on her shit list.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Her introductory dialogue as a playable unit has her enlist the Traveler as her personal bodyguard, despite being a formidable mage more than capable of taking care of herself.
  • Celibate Hero: Despite the throngs of suitors vying for her hand, Ningguang has no desire for romance. As her final Character Story entry states, she has no love for finite things and will not be bound by them, which is why, aside from Mora, her only love is for the Jade Chamber, as it is infinite in her eyes.
  • The Chessmaster: As an experienced businesswoman who avoids violence whenever possible, Ningguang is crafty and smart enough to get what she wants with as little trouble as possible. Almost every business in Liyue Harbor is aware of it and thus often take her into account for their plans, and she in turn happily admits to controlling events as she sees fit.
    • She makes no lies to the Traveler about how she has used their every action to further her agenda. And she follows that up by blatantly manipulating them again into dealing with a problem on her in a way that they catch onto at once. As a result, the Traveler stays as distrustful of her as they are towards Tartaglia until Ningguang sacrificing the Jade Chamber to kill Osial gives them an insight as to where her heart truly lay.
    • Her Hangout Event tree starts with her organizing an auction and putting Baishi, Baiwen, and Baixiao in charge while she and the Traveler went about to set her schedule in order. In the route where the Traveler encourages her to visit the auction and handle it in person, the former realizes that the items up for auction aren't all that special apart from having once belonged to Ningguang. When one buyer confronts her upon realizing that he spent so much money on an apparent forgery, Ningguang turns it around by questioning why he thinks she will auction away forgeries. She then reveals that she specifically invited people suspected of taking personal belongings of hers recovered from the wreckage of the first Jade Chamber after dropping it on Osial, meaning the man just exposed himself as one such thief. She then threatens legal action unless her items are returned and even offers to refund the money he spent on the auction as an extra incentive.
    • Towards the end of the first Interlude Chapter, it's revealed that part of the reason she built a second Jade Chamber was to lure out Beisht, knowing the latter will attack another object not unlike the one that defeated her husband Osial, allowing her to summon the Qixing, the Millelith, the Crux Fleet, and other native Vision holders to nip another potential threat to Liyue in the bud. She also used the opportunity to prove Liyue's ability to fend for themselves without the adepti to a still-skeptical Cloud Retainer, even retorting to her claim that they only won thanks to Shenhe, Cloud Retainer's adoptive daughter and pupil, by stating that they would have won out in the end either way (and that all Shenhe did was drive Beisht away in a fit of fury after the Traveler was injured), with her even going as far to claim that she would have willingly sacrificed the second Jade Chamber again.
    • This is also taken to a literal degree for symbolism: Ningguang is so crafty that she devised a more difficult chess variant called "Liyue Millennial," relishing in the complexity and seeking to add more.
  • Children Are Innocent: Despite having the children of Liyue serving as her informants and admitting to teaching them, Ningguang makes a point to not teach them business directly, only general lessons such as critical thinking. Ningguang also notes in her Hangout Event tree that while she is completely fine with deception to get ahead, she draws the line at emotionally manipulating children, a sentiment likely rooted rooted in her own, poverty-stricken childhood. Indeed, in one branch of her Hangout Event, when she discovered that some businessmen forced one of her young informants to lie about information by taking advantage of a comb she broke (which Ningguang promised to get fixed), a clearly displeased Ningguang forced them to apologize to the girl.
  • Colony Drop: With no other options remaining, she chooses to drop down her beloved Jade Chamber down onto Osial, defeating it at last and returning it to its prison.
  • Companion Cube: The Jade Chamber is more than just her workplace. Other characters say that she has "no love for finite things" (to the point of having kept many a suitor at bay), and she considers the Chamber, which she plans to continuously upgrade, as "infinite." She even calls it "my friend" right before sending it crashing down onto Osial, and in one of the endings of her Hangout Event tree she admits over being heartbroken over having done so. She eventually has it rebuilt during the first Interlude Chapter, partly in preparation against Beisht, Osial's wife.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: Her second Constellation upgrade, Shock Effect, resets the cooldown of her Skill if the enemy shatters its same-named barrier.
  • Cursed with Awesome: In her Vision entry, Ningguang at one point saw Visions, especially those that are abandoned and powerless, as different avenues of profit and sought to auction off one she had found. To her annoyance, this Vision resonated with her, blessing her with the power of Geo. When her employees congratulated her for gaining the Vision's power, she responded with this...
"What's there to be happy about? Once broken, considered sold!"
  • Cutscene Power to the Max:
    • To prevent Osial from destroying Liyue Harbor, Ningguang uses her magic to free the seals of the Jade Chamber with which she creates a flying fortress with Guizhong Ballistae capable of fighting against the threat. Beyond this she also shows impressive teleportation abilities.
    • This happens again when confronting Beisht, where she alone is able to equal the combined firepower of an entire regiment of Ballistae in one of the greatest feats of Vision power not related to the Archons or adepti.
  • Damage Reduction: Her fourth Constellation upgrade, Exquisite be the Jade, Outshining All Beneath, allows the Jade Screen to bestow a 10% boost to overall Elemental Resistance of surrounding allies.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At low friendship levels, she speaks to the Traveler in a very formal matter, as if they're having a business meeting and not a friendly chat. As her friendship level rises, she becomes increasingly warmer to the Traveler, and starting Level 6 she tells them that she wishes for them to be by her side once the Jade Chamber casts its shadow over all the seven nations.
  • Dowsing Device: Her utility passive, Trove of Marvelous Treasures, displays the location of nearby ore veins on the mini-map.
  • The Dreaded: While a beloved figure in Liyue Harbor, many citizens tread very carefully around her extensive information network, not to mention the massive wealth and legal power she wields as the Tianquan. Following the end of the Osial crisis, even the Northland Bank and its Fatui agents are reluctant to cross Ningguang, despite their apparent grudge against her.
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: The characters of her name (凝光, pinyin "Níngguāng") are read as "Gyōkō" (via on'yomi, or Chinese-derived, reading; hiragana ぎょうこう) in Japanese and "Eunggwang" (hangul 응광) in Korean.
  • Dude Magnet: Because of her wealth and charm, men from all levels of society try to win her affection.
  • Elemental Personalities: Ningguang has a Geo Vision, and her personality fits in two ways.
    • She can be quite calculative, calm and enduring, befitting the Dishing Out Dirt side of Geo.
    • She's obsessed with wealth and luxury, and her Geo powers manifest in the form of gemstones.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: One of her assistants, Baishi, has feelings for her.
  • Fanservice Pack: Not that her regular outfit isn't good enough, but her Orchid Evening Gown does a better job at showing off how beautiful and alluring Ningguang is.
  • Femme Fatalons: Nail guards on her ring and pinkie fingers, as appropriate of a wealthy woman in a China inspired land.
  • Fiction 500: As the head of commerce of Liyue, the most prosperous of Teyvat's nations, Ningguang is unfathomably rich. Her profile states that "her wealth is unsurpassed in all of Teyvat".
  • Foil:
    • To Keqing, a fellow member of the Qixing. Regarding Rex Lapis and the adepti, Ningguang is a traditionalist who stands to benefit financially and politically from the Geo Archon's predictions; Keqing, on the other hand, is adamantly against relying on him and the adepti altogether and believes in the eminence of humanity in the modern era. Ningguang grew up poor and currently enjoys her wealth and takes pride in owning various treasures and luxuries such as her Jade Chamber, while Keqing was the scion of a wealthy family but voluntarily lives as modestly as possible and chooses to limit what luxuries she has to a minimum. In terms of character design, Ningguang is older, much taller and has sharper features, while Keqing is younger, shorter and has softer features.
    • To Beidou, whom Ningguang asks for her services. Ningguang rules over Liyue on land, while Beidou lords over the seas around Liyue. Ningguang appears as an inscrutable businesswoman, while people love Beidou for her honesty and approachability. Their designs also contrast, with both having long hair and an ornate hairpins, but Ningguang has blonde hair while Beidou has brown. The two even share similar Rags to Riches backstories.
  • Foreshadowing: She had gotten her Vision, because it resonated with her when she had intended to sell it as it was a Masterless Vision. This is the first clue that Visions are not granted by the Archons, as would be confirmed by Raiden Ei's voice line about Visions.
  • Freudian Excuse: In one branch of her Hangout Events, she thinks that her obsession with Mora and wealth likely may be rooted from her childhood as the daughter of poor fishermen who had to work before sunrise just to afford lunch. If one of Zhongli's anecdotes is to be believed, she once even walked barefoot across Yaoguang Shoal selling their catch.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: On a nationwide scale. For much of the Liyue Archon Quest, the Traveler is led to think of Ningguang as an inscrutable businesswoman, leaving a great degree of ambiguity over the sincerity of her stated intentions, given how her ambitions and love of Mora remain constant, epitomized by her Jade Chamber, built both as a symbol of the Qixing's preeminence over Liyue and the hard work she took to get to where she is. It wasn't until Tartaglia releasing Osial forced her to sacrifice the Jade Chamber to defeat the old god that they ultimately realize that, when push comes to shove, her heart is in the right place.
  • Friend to All Children: While the children of Liyue serve as Ningguang's eyes and ears, she genuinely enjoys seeing them smile, and rewards them with tasty sweets for their efforts. Her base profile entry outright states that children see her as a big-sister figure. Amusingly, her voice line for Yaoyao shows a bit of her maternal side as she asks the Traveler to try and get her to eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Gemstone Assault: How her Geo powers manifest. Ningguang's attacks involve firing gemstones at enemies. Her basic gameplay also revolves around building up Star Jades with her normal attacks (of which she can normally hold up to three at once), which are then consumed to increase the hits of her charged attacks. Her first Constellation upgrade, Piercing Fragments, increases the damage radii of her normal attacks, while her sixth, Grandeur be the Seven Stars, automatically grants her seven Star Jades after using her Burst.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The Jade Chamber is her pride and joy, the project she worked on since the day she went into business. Zhongli asserts that she would never give it up. She ends up doing just that when Osial takes out the Chamber's Guizhong Ballistae, dropping it on top of the old god and ending the battle once and for all. She would've also done the same to his wife Beisht with the second Chamber, though fortunately Shenhe spared her the necessity.
  • Good Counterpart:
    • To Tartaglia. Both enjoy a lofty position of influence from their respective organizations and have a manipulative interest in the Traveler. However, whereas Tartaglia has more self-serving ends designed to sate his thirst for battle, Ningguang genuinely has Liyue's best interests at heart.
    • To Azar. Both are leaders not well liked in their nations (to the point their respective second in commands, Keqing and Cyno, do not trust them). While Ningguang isn't so ruthless to sacrifice her own people to the point she launches her prized Jade Chamber at Osial to stop him, and wins the respect of the people of Liyue, Azar is petty and ruthless enough to sacrifice his people to make Scaramouche a replacement god, earning the scorn of everyone in Sumeru.
  • Guile Heroine: Ningguang took steps to control Liyue following Rex Lapis's apparent death, both to uproot a Fatui conspiracy led by Tartaglia and wrest control of Liyue from the adepti. Even the Traveler, who eventually gains a grasp of Ningguang's goals, stays wary of her until the end.
  • Hartman Hips: The form-fitting dress she wears helps show off an impressive pair of hips.
  • Heroes' Frontier Step: Many people in Liyue initially saw Ningguang as nothing more than a cynical, greedy businesswoman. Her sacrificing the Jade Chamber to protect Liyue changed that entirely.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • While she loves living in luxury, her voice lines reveal she has simple culinary tastes and dislikes the excessive frivolity of expensive foods. Her specialty dish is simply particularly well-made Mora Meat, a common street food, and its description questions where such a high and mighty person like her learned to cook such a dish.
    • Love for wealth she may have, Ningguang isn't greedy. She explains in her playable voice-overs that she is willing to invest money to finance other places around Liyue, such as Wanmin Restaurant and the Yun-Han Opera Troupe (none of which would bring her a profit), saying in Yun Jin's voice-over that elegant forms of art are worthy to be passed down to future generations.
    • One route of her Hangout Event also has her catch fish by hand with the Traveler, which the game states that she "grills like a pro".
  • The High Queen: As the Tianquan, Ningguang oversees governing and enforcing laws across the nation of Liyue.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: The Traveler has taken note of how she employs children to be her informants despite chastising Lao Ke and Big Xu for having young Nannan relay (false) information to affect the market. Ningguang retorts that her employment has resulted in them learning valuable skills and maturing faster, and she was acting more like a teacher to them rather than someone exploiting a vulnerable child. This is without mentioning Ningguang is already a Friend to All Children, so despite her slight hypocrisy, it can be difficult to disagree with the Tianquan.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Ningguang wears exquisite dresses and is a fully capable combatant even while wearing them.
  • Knowledge Broker:
    • Liyueans often warn foreigners that "Ningguang knows everything." Rumors say that it comes from magic in the Jade Chamber that allows her to eavesdrop on everyone; in reality, children relay any information that they see or hear. In exchange, Ningguang rewards them with delicious treats. During the Traveler's first personal audience with her in the Jade Chamber, she also reveals that she also gets information from Wangshu Inn, as well as having learned of the Traveler from her correspondences with Jean.
    • Also, according to urban legends there is a special wall on her office in the Jade Chamber lined with various documents holding valuable information on the upcoming market trends. After picking through every detail, Ningguang shreds them and scatters them to the wind to rain down on the city below. Whenever this happens, merchants scramble to get and study whatever scrap they can find in the hopes of getting a leg up in Liyue's cutthroat economy.
  • Lady of Black Magic: An elegant and fearsome woman capable of creating magical gems from nothing that she uses to fight.
  • Loophole Abuse: Zhongli's story entries mention that, as one of the Qixing, she works to defy this trope: whenever she finds people abusing the holes in Liyue's laws, she will be quick to amend and "patch" them, leading people to call her the "Tailor of Liyue."
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Her specialty. Both her charged attacks and Burst shoot out a volley of gemstones towards enemies, and if a Jade Screen is in play, it can be consumed for the latter to create even more projectiles.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: A gender-flipped example. Ningguang is an imposing, extremely wealthy, cultured and elegant businesswoman who acts as the highest authority over her nation due to her position as The Tianquan.
  • Martial Pacifist: While a very capable and powerful mage by her own right, Ningguang despises violence, and would prefer to resolve conflict through negotiation and financial flexing if she can help it.
(Feelings About Ascension: Intro) "There's no style in resorting to violence. It's simply the worst of all the bad decisions you could make."
  • Meaningful Name: Her name means "solidified/concentrated light", referring to her moveset, particularly her Jade Screen.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Ningguang stands out alongside Zhongli, who instead relies on HP, as one of only Geo units to have no moves or abilities that scale off her Defense stat, with it requiring no investment to increase her power. Interestingly, the part of this that makes her unusual is the fact that she's an otherwise straightforward DPS more reliant on increasing her Attack stat and elemental damage, among an element type that largely consists of either Support Party Members or DPS units that rely on what is otherwise a Dump Stat.
  • Mirror Character: Since the Sumeru update, Ningguang has one in Dori. Both are insanely rich women who own extravagant properties to showcase their wealth, have similarly Dark and Troubled Pasts where they went from Rags to Riches, worship Rex Lapis, and are rarely bothered by public opinion on them, but the two are set apart by several other key traits.
    • The means of their acquisition of wares is noticeably different: Ningguang, shady as she can be at times, always deals in legitimate means (except when dealing with Beidou and her antics) so long as it benefits her and Liyue, while Dori does not shy away from contraband.
    • Ningguang's obsession with wealth started when she was a young merchant trying to sell her wares (as told by Zhongli) and who nowadays keeps investing Mora to make a profit, but when push comes to shove, she will put the wellbeing of Liyue ahead, to the point of sacrificing her most prized possession, the Jade Chamber, to defeat Osial. By contrast, Dori attempted to raise enough Mora to purchase expensive medicine for her sick twin sister, who sadly passed away before Dori could finish; this evolved into working equally hard to never have to pay for stuff and never suffer again, but eventually devolved into earning Mora just for the sake of it and worshipping it to the point of obsession.
    • Ningguang has helped other businesses around Liyue by investing on them, such as Wanmin Restaurant or the Yun-Han Opera Troupe—since neither explicitly brings a profit to her and she's glad to pass down such to future generations, it shows Ningguang isn't greedy. In a reverse, Dori's main trait is her Greed; while she does care for her Sumpter Beasts, she turned an amusement park she made for them into a tourist attraction to recoup the costs, and is willing to keep the architect that made her Palace of Alcarzarzaray on an unending debt with her.
    • Ningguang worships Rex Lapis, and even after parting from this world, she manages Liyue alongside the Qixing to show they can move on without him but without forgetting his influence. Dori, on the other hand, used to worship Rex Lapis because he is the God of Wealth, fitting for her attempts to raise lots of Mora, but stops doing so after his departure.
    • Ningguang keeps an elegant appearance, and deals with all matters with poise and calculated steps, whereas Dori likes to show off some childish extravagance, and fancies a game of chance as shown with her trade of Knowledge Capsules.
    • Finally, their elements show a contrast: Ningguang's Geo Vision symbolizes her strong and immovable will, while Dori's Electro Vision shows off her volatile yet bombastic style.
  • Modest Royalty: Played with. While her overall demeanor and position as Tianquan evoke the image of an elegant lady who enjoys the luxuries of wealth, Ningguang's culinary tastes betray her humbler roots. She dislikes Golden Crab due to it being needlessly frivolous, and would rather take its worth in Mora instead. Rather, her favorite food is cabbage leaves steeped in a chicken-and-pork broth. Her signature dish is even based on Mora Meat, a common Liyuan street food.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears shorts under her dress in both her available outfits, letting her keep her dignity even as she fights and travels the land.
  • Money Fetish: Downplayed. Never to the level of worship, but Ningguang loves wealth and never takes any Mora she worked hard to gain for granted. Midway through the Liyue Archon Quest, Zhongli states that the Jade Chamber is Ningguang's second most prized possession after Mora. Her character story also has her say this line...
"Vast wealth is a wonderful thing. Adding another Mora to the pot can hardly make it any less wonderful, now, can it?"
  • Ms. Fanservice: Ningguang is a beautiful, elegant lady that wears outfits designed to show off her body while remaining fairly conservative. Her regular outfit, being form-fitting, clings to her bust and bares her long legs; her Orchid Evening Gown outfit takes this further, showcasing her cleavage and putting more emphasis on her Hartman Hips.
  • Mundane Utility: Between her utility passive which points out ore vein locations on the mini-map and her normal-attack projectiles carrying the same "weight" as a strike from a claymore, Ningguang is one of the best characters to use for mining.
  • Ominous Floating Castle: Her Jade Chamber floats above Liyue, and she plans to expand it to cover the entire continent. Ominous in the beginning since her allegiance stayed unclear. Anyone who wishes to come there must meet the special guard and speak the right password.
  • One-Woman Army: With her first Constellation upgrade, Piercing Fragments, Ningguang could become one of the best characters for crowd control with the right loadout, while her Geo Vision allows her to trigger Crystallize reactions that improve her durability.
  • Pretty in Mink: Downplayed, but both of her costumes feature touches of fur to raise the stature of her dress.
  • Rags to Riches: Ningguang was born to a poor family, which she eventually moved away from to start her own business. She retains some of her tastes from that time, such as a taste for simple grilled fish, and one of the branches of her Hangout Event has her and the Traveler reenacting her rise to power for fun.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Downplayed. Ningguang is both a ruler of Liyue, as well as a powerful Geo Vision holder, but despises resorting to violence and would rather rely on negotiation and money to solve problems.
  • Reduced Mana Cost: Played with. Ningguang's first-ascension passive, Backup Plan, allows Star Jades to negate the stamina cost of her charged attacks.
  • The Rich Want to Be Richer: Justified, as she's a businesswoman first and foremost before being the Tianquan. Still, Ningguang is the richest person in Liyue, and despite her wealth, keeps working hard to make even more of a living for herself.
  • The Rival: To Beidou, who is something of a business rival as she hawks her exotic wares and information beyond the Qixing's remit. As various countermeasures and punishments do not seem to deter Beidou from breaking the rules, even Ningguang can do nothing but sigh and look the other way. Keqing notes that Ningguang is unusually busy with other matters whenever Beidou is stirring up trouble.
(About Beidou: Attitude) "[...] All that can be said has been said — both the good and the bad — but she still does as she pleases. Forget it. Keep Beidou out of my sight."
  • Rule of Symbolism: Her Constellation depicts a gyroscope, which alludes both to the gyroscope-shaped Jade Chamber as well as to the balancing act she has to perform regarding Liyue's various business interests.
  • Rules Lawyer: As the Tianquan, Ningguang can add to and amend Liyue's founding laws as she pleases. Given her complete understanding of the intricate workings of each law, she can milk it to her personal benefit.
  • Secret-Keeper: Her voice lines reveal that she knows Xianyun's true identity.
“I plan to have Lady Xianyun over for a casual conversation over tea in a few days. I happen to have in my possession a number of mechanical devices, and I would be most interested to hear her insights on their design and use. It would also be a fine opportunity to hear about her experiences as an adeptus adapting to a new life in Liyue Harbor. All I require now is a suitable candidate to deliver the invitation to her on my behalf... Would you be interested, (Traveler)?”
  • Self-Made Woman: Ningguang was born to a family so poor they couldn't even afford shoes, then worked her way up to be The High Queen of Liyue in all but name.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Ningguang's default outfit has a back cutout on her dress. Her Orchid's Evening Gown outfit is much more revealing and leaves more of her bare back exposed compared to her original attire.
  • Situational Damage Attack: If Ningguang has a Star Jade, her next charged attack also fires them off, dealing additional damage.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
  • Smart People Play Chess: Beidou's profile states that both her and Ningguang play chess together. Ningguang's character story states that she even creates chess games of her own design.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Ningguang's Official 2020 Birthday Artwork shows her with a kiseru, giving a sophisticated vibe. She also produces it during one of her idle animations in-game.
  • Status Buff: Her fourth-ascension passive, Strategic Reserve, allows the Jade Screen to bestow a ten-second-long 12% boost to the Geo Damage Bonus of allies that pass through the Jade Screen.
  • Stellar Name: Her title, "Tianquan," is the Chinese name of Megrez (Delta Ursa Majoris).
  • Squishy Wizard: Downplayed; being a Catalyst wielder, Ningguang suffers from low Defense, and her Max HP is not particularly high, although this can be partially mitigated by both the Jade Screen and the Crystallize reactions inherent to her Geo element. In addition, the Jade Screen's resilience scales off of her Max HP, giving players an incentive to make her more tanky.
  • True Blue Femininity: Ningguang's "Orchid's Evening Gown" costume emphasizes her femininity with its slinky shape and less conservative style, and trades nearly all of her golden and black Geo tones for rich blue and indigo.
  • True Companions: Beidou collaborates with Ningguang to do work for her, yet she insists that the two of them are on equal footing. When Ningguang's advisers worry that Beidou is acting too much like a maverick, the former defends Beidou with this line...
"On the contrary, Beidou is the most reliable person in Liyue. Just tell her the truth, as well as what's in it for her, and she'll come around in her own time."
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her sharp eyes contrast with Keqing's round eyes, indicating her shady, seemingly untrostworthy nature (until events dictate otherwise, that is).
  • The Unchosen One: Ningguang is among the few Vision wielders who was not granted a Vision directly by the gods. Rather, she came across a Masterless Vision instead, and had planned to sell it for a tidy profit only for the Vision to activate in her hand as she was preparing an auction for it, her drive to accumulate wealth resonating with the ambitions of its former owner.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Double Subverted. Initially, as she explains in a branch of her Hangout Event, being the effective ruler of Liyue didn't necessarily mean that she was well-loved, with her even recalling a time when she made a business proposition to someone, only for them to accept a similar deal from someone else instead simply because they didn't like her. However, she noticed that after she sacrificed the first Jade Chamber to defeat Osial, most of her detractors grew to admire and revere her for her readiness to put Liyue ahead of her wealth.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Majesty be the Array of Stars and Invincible be the Jade Screen, add three levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Utility Weapon: Her gemstone projectiles are one of the few non-claymore attacks considered "heavy" enough to be able to break ores.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: As much as she respects Beidou, she also has this dynamic with her, as her quote regarding Beidou has her warning the Traveler to keep Beidou out of her sight.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Contrasts with Keqing as the other playable member of the Qixing with her default outfit being primarily yellow and having a Geo vision. Keqing also describes herself and Ningguang as having opposite personalities, seeing the Tianquan as nothing more than a money-grabber before the events of the Liyue arc. They managed to understand each other better after everything settled down, though Keqing is still occasionally annoyed by Ningguang's actions.

Driving Thunder
Opulent Splendor
"I am Keqing, Yuheng of the Liyue Qixing. We live in an era of change, as the old order that has existed for a thousand years is about to be rewritten. Join me. Let us bear witness to this historical moment together."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Electro
Weapon: Sword
Constellation: Trulla Cementarii, the Plumbline

The Yuheng of the Qixing, Keqing is a skeptic of the beliefs taught by the worshippers of Rex Lapis. She prefers actions over words, and she proves this by being a consummate professional. She believes that humanity must decide its own future itself instead of relying on the gods. Her sincerity, trustworthiness and straightforward nature makes her a valuable ally nearing the end of Liyue's Archon Quest, where she meets the Traveler.

Keqing fights using fast, high-precision strikes that can hit hard where it hurts. Her Elemental Skill, Stellar Restoration, launches forward a Lightning Stiletto (or in any direction in its held mode), which she can either warp to should the Skill be used again in its basic mode or manually detonate from a distance in its held mode, with either form zapping surrounding enemies, while her Elemental Burst, Starward Sword, is a flurry of swift, Electro-enhanced slashes over a wide radius.note
  • The Ace: Keqing has it all; she's strong in battle, exceedingly wealthy, beautiful, determined, and efficient in her work ethic, and benevolent to those that collaborate with her. When Ningguang presses the Traveler on whether they prefer Keqing to her, both dialogue options have them admit as much. And she even has the favor of her land's Archon in spite of, or rather because of, her attitude towards the gods.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats; she is fiercely independent, her fighting style is agile and graceful, her hair buns look like cat ears, her specialty dish is a grilled fish, her Trademark Favorite Food is a fish dish, and her name has a pronunciation like "kucing," Indonesian and Malay for "cat". She's also depicted in the story wielding a Lion's Roar as her signature weapon. Fittingly, she's one of the cat-ified characters in Genshin Impact's April Fool's 2023 joke.
  • Badass Adorable: Keqing is a short, beautiful young lady with a cat motif to her, a clear Moment of Weakness towards her Trademark Favorite Food, and an endearingly Tsundere attitude towards her land's Archon. She is also a surprisingly competent fighter who doesn't mind getting in on the action.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Keqing is skeptical of how important Rex Lapis is to Liyue's political structure and suggests that the nation does not need his guidance anymore. When Rex Lapis does retire, Keqing found out the hard way that filling a god's shoes when she's just a mortal is precisely as hard as it sounds, and the Qixing have been buried under a mountain of new responsibilities that were once the Geo Archon's. Rex Lapis/Zhongli surrendering his Gnosis also shuts down the Golden House, source of all of Teyvat's Mora, a problem they must find a solution to on their own. While they eventually get a handle on the situation, Keqing walks out of the affair ashamed that she honestly thought she was the intellectual equal of Rex Lapis.
  • Benevolent Boss: She is willing to assume various jobs herself, from physical labor to waiting tables, so she can devise ways to improve conditions for Liyue's workers.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Keqing appears in Zhongli's Test Run in v4.0 as one of his preset teammates, making her the first instance of a 5★ character appearing in a Test Run other than their own.
  • Brutal Honesty: Her conversations in the Serenitea Pot reveals that she hates beating around the bush, giving examples where she told a coworker to make himself busy when he asked if he can be of assistance, or another time she told a girl not to bother with finding a gift for Ningguang as she hates suck-ups.
  • But Thou Must!: When asked by Ningguang whether the Traveler considers herself or Keqing more trustworthy, both options favor her.
  • Character Development: Keqing started off skeptical of whether Liyue really needed Rex Lapis or the adepti, but when they do hand governance of Liyue to the Qixing, she realizes just how big the Geo Archon's shoes really are to fill, and that he really was an expert on all things worthy of the people's worship. Her Nay-Theist attitude faded away and replaced with admiration, to the point that she has started collecting merchandise of Rex Lapis.
(About Keqing: Self-Reflection) "After I took on the management of so many of Liyue's affairs, I had a new-found respect for Rex Lapis and all his hard work over the last millennium. Recently, every time I come up against a difficult problem with no obvious solution, I find myself thinking: What would Rex Lapis do? Maybe he really IS an expert in everything, and I've got more left to learn than I realized..."
  • Combat Haircomb: She uses her hairpin as a universal survival tool when exploring the wilderness outside Liyue Harbor, and with a little Electro, can easily turn it into a weapon, as seen in her Skill. It is a source of pride for Keqing and a testament to her minimalist lifestyle.
  • Consummate Professional: She's famous in Liyue for being a hard-nosed, no-nonsense workaholic and perfectionist who expects maximum efficiency from herself and those around her.
  • Crazy-Prepared: To paraphrase one of her profile entries, give Keqing a task that would normally take a month and she can churn it out in two days, with all loose ends tied. Most consider it a normal sight to see Keqing working on and completing projects several years in advance. Assistants have been known to leave her before hitting the three-month mark due to their inability to keep pace.
  • Criss-Cross Attack: Her Burst has her rapidly slash enemies in a wide area.
  • Critical Hit Class: Keqing's Critical Damage percentage increases as she ascends (to a maximum of 38.4 at her sixth). Her fourth-ascension passive, Aristocratic Dignity, gives her Burst the ability to bestow a 15% boost to her Critical Rate, as well as Energy Recharge, for eight seconds.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The "Moonchase Festival" event is partially about her investigating the Stove God, to learn whether they are one of Rex Lapis's aliases or is a separate entity. The 2022 Lantern Rite event also involves the Traveler spending time with her as she goes around making preparations for the big day.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her attitude towards her Archon can appear as akin to a rebellious daughter and her caring father. She insists that humans can—and should be—independent because she believes the gods may someday no longer be able to take care of humanity, not unlike a child wanting to grow out of their parents' shadow, who does not appreciate/understand how much they cared for her. Meanwhile, Rex Lapis, the "father" figure in their relationship, is secretly proud of her for growing up, being able to take care of herself, and proving her words with actions. Then after his "departure," Keqing goes to realize just how big the shoes that her "father" had left to fill and shows a newfound respect towards him.
  • Disc-One Nuke: She's the best pull you can get from the Standard Banner or if you are just starting out. Unlike other characters who've been left behind by Power Creep over time, she can still pull her weight in the Spiral Abyss thanks to the addition of Dendro reactions. Meanwhile, her held Elemental Skill also makes it a lot easier to explore for newer players.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: While Keqing's work ethic is one of her strongest virtues, it starts going into overdrive come the "Fleeting Colors in Flight" event, where Ningguang confides in the Traveler that not only is she personally overseeing many tasks, however trivial, the bold young woman hasn't taken a proper break in several days. As the event goes on, despite pretty much everyone from Yanfei to Cloud Retainer discussing the need to find a good work-life balance, and the ways they make it happen, Keqing continues to add even more responsibilities to her plate as the needs keep piling up, leaving the Traveler and Paimon to look helplessly at each other when she leaves to track down the missing fireworks alone.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Keqing's attitude towards Visions and the Archons makes her come off as oblivious to how good her people actually have it in light of what is actually happening in Inazuma (the story arc right after Liyue's). However, the Electro Archon- or rather the corrupt elements of the Tri-Commission who colluded with the Fatui to trick her into ratifying the Vision Hunt Decree- would have responded positively to her attempts to get rid of her Vision, while her attitude towards Archons is far less tolerated in Inazuma than in Liyue.
    • While Keqing tried and failed to discard her Electro Vision, Ei had long abandoned her Electro Gnosis as part of her resigning to the Plane of Euthymia to signify her severing of ties to Celestia, a reasoning not unlike Keqing's.
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: The characters of her name (刻晴; pinyin "Kèqíng") are read as "Kokusei" (via kan-on, or Han Chinese-derived, reading; hiragana こくせい) in Japanese and "Gakcheong" (hangul 각청) in Korean.
  • Dynamic Entry: In Genius Invocation TCG, using Lightning Stiletto while on standby will switch your active character to Keqing, who will then use her Elemental Skill to deal damage and infuse her normal attack with Electro.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Her eyes are purple like her Electro vision.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Her hair is also purple, also matching her Electro vision.
  • Elemental Personalities: Of course the young woman that's unable to stay in one place, despises procrastinating, and is hard to keep up with, would possess an Electro Vision.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Workaholic as Keqing may be, even she was shocked at how much Ganyu works herself to the point of exhaustion in v3.4's Lantern Rite event. Paimon, as usual, lampshades it.
Keqing: "How's your workload at the moment? Will you be able to make time?"
Ganyu: "I can probably get through everything in... two days. As long as I don't sleep."
Keqing: "Wait, what do you mean, "as long as I don't sleep"? Even for someone with illuminated beast blood in their veins, working for such an extended period without a break will take its toll on your health."
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her eyes distinctly incorporate the middle "V"-shape from her Skill, which is positioned beneath her standard oval-shaped pupils.
  • Fangirl: She adamantly denies fangirling over Rex Lapis despite having bought paraphernalia of him recently, according to her "Souvenirs" line. While she admits that she's Skeptic No Longer regarding Rex Lapis, she is not yet comfortable with the idea of her openly embracing her new view.
(Something to Share: Souvenir) "What do you mean, Geo Archon paraphernalia? ...You're not suggesting my bedroom is full of that stuff, surely? I'm not a child anymore! Although... okay, I did buy a couple of Rex Lapis figurines recently, but — but, they're just to keep me on the straight and narrow. Look, just because I own an idol or two does not mean I idolize him, okay?"
  • Fanservice Pack: Keqing's Opulent Splendor outfit from the "Fleeting Colors in Flight" event showcases her beauty in a clearer light, exposing more of her upper body such as her back, shoulders and cleavage, and showing just how well-endowed she is.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Downplayed. While not that noticeable at first glance, both of Keqing's outfits have a number of asymmetrical details, such as patterns on the opposite end of each leg of her stockings.
  • Flash Step: She disappears after the fourth hit of her basic combo, then quickly reappears to deliver the fifth. If she uses the base form of her Skill while a Lightning Stiletto from her first use remains active, she will warp towards it to deliver a wide-ranging, Electro-infused slash; and if she has her first Constellation upgrade, Thundering Might, she can zap surrounding enemies on both the start and end points of her teleportation, with damage worth half of her Attack stat.
  • Foil: To Ningguang, a fellow member of the Qixing. Regarding Rex Lapis and the adepti, Keqing is adamantly against relying on him and the adepti altogether and believes in the eminence of humanity in the modern era; Ningguang, on the other hand, is a traditionalist who stands to benefit financially and politically from the Geo Archon's predictions. Keqing was the scion of a wealthy family but voluntarily lives as modestly as possible and chooses to limit what luxuries she has to a minimum, while Ningguang grew up poor and currently enjoys her wealth and takes pride in owning various treasures and luxuries such as her Jade Chamber. In terms of character design, Keqing is younger, shorter and has softer features, while Ningguang is older, much taller and has sharper features.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Pre-Character Development Keqing started out as a Nay-Theist who believes Rex Lapis's role in Liyue's prosperity is overstated, and that the nation should elevate themselves to the point that they no longer need him, and worries that the Geo Archon might not take well to his people deciding they don't need them anymore. Come Inazuma and Sumeru, her starting attitude is portrayed in a deconstructed manner:
      • Inazuma introduces an Archon who takes a far more active role in the nation's management for better or worse, and does not take well to people who dare question her idea of Eternity, much alone those who think Inazuma should outgrow their current Archon.
      • Sumeru is a representation of what Liyue could have become if pre-Character Development Keqing succeeded in turning Liyue and its people back against its Archon.
    • Keqing tried many times to rid herself of her Vision through different means since she didn't want a gift from the gods, but constantly failed to do so despite making it clear that she really didn't want it. This hints at the true nature of Visions as manifestations of their holders' dreams, desires, and ambitions, and Keqing's are not exempt.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair up into a pair of high-hanging twintails complemented with a pair of hair buns shaped like cat ears.
  • Hidden Buxom: Downplayed. Keqing's normal attire doesn't hide that she's well-endowed, but it's not until the player sees her wearing her Opulent Splendor outfit that she shows just how busty she is, tying with Yoimiya for having the second-largest breasts of anyone using the playable Medium Female model thus far (with Noelle being the largest).
  • Hidden Depths: As shown in her character story, whenever she can find free time, she will indulge in her favorite pastime, shopping. Her later voice lines reveal that she secretly collects Rex Lapis merchandise, and she is very Tsundere about it.
  • Honor Before Reason: Keqing has tried to destroy her Vision just because she does not like having a power bequeathed by gods. Never mind that this power is incredibly useful, and she is all about efficiency.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Keqing has tried and failed on occasions to discard or destroy her Vision, which she believes is the gods' way of cursing her for her wish of human independence. She fears that people will attribute her accomplishments to her Vision rather than her own work. As she does not want it to fall to the wrong hands, however, she had no choice but to accept it as part of her life; still, she only sees it as just another tool without any divine will attached. Keqing was right: Ei revealed that she, as an Archon, has no way to grant or deny people Visions.
  • Irony:
    • She thinks that Zhongli is too "traditionalist" like Rex Lapis was, even as she respects him for being knowledgeable. Unbeknownst to her, Zhongli is Rex Lapis incognito, and even shares her sentiment about Liyue no longer needing him.
    • Keqing takes on various jobs to get an idea of how commoners live their lives around which she builds various development plans, and part of her disapproval towards the Geo Archon is out of skepticism that a god who only descends once a year to make proclamations can really be all-knowing. She does not realize just how often he secretly walks among his people, examining wares in detail and taking time to find promising talent among fledgling businesses to support with a bit of divine publicity, hence he also does as she does. The change in the times that she claims have happened and insists on preparing Liyue for are also recognized by Rex Lapis, who in turn secretly prepares a final test for his people to prove they're ready to stand without him.
    • She also often looks down on Ganyu for her devotion towards Rex Lapis, and wonders what could inspire such a devotion from one of the Qixing's most hardworking personnel towards him. Ganyu, as a half-adeptus, was his comrade-in-arms during the Archon Wars thousands of years ago, and thus was much closer to Rex Lapis than Keqing thought. Funnily enough, for her part Ganyu likewise looks down on Keqing for her perceived disrespect, unaware that Rex Lapis looks on her independent outlook with favor.
    • Finally, Keqing has tried many times to rid herself of her Vision through different means since she really didn't want a gift from the gods. However, Keqing's Vision represents her ambition to make Liyue prosper without the need for Rex Lapis, and that attempting to rid herself of what she perceived to be unwanted help from above was exactly the kind of behavior that made them take notice of her in the first place!
  • Lady of War: Not only does she come from one of the wealthiest families in Liyue, but she is also one of its best fighters.
  • Mirror Character: Much like Cyno, she doesn't trust the leaders she works with and is also an Electro Vision holder. Both also have utility passives that buff their efficiency when sent to Expeditions in their home regions (shorter duration time for Keqing, increased rewards for Cyno), as well as having a hobby many would consider geeky (collecting Rex Lapis memorabilia for Keqing, playing Genius Invokation TCG for Cyno). However, Cyno decides to turn against the Sages upon learning of their corruption, while Keqing managed to warm up to Ningguang after seeing the latter's decision to save Liyue. Lastly, their respective animal motifs are dogs and cats.
  • Modest Royalty: Though she is of a noble background, Keqing keeps her luxuries at an absolute minimum, as she finds excess opulence ill-fitting for her relatively down-to-earth position as the Yuheng.
  • Moment of Weakness: During her stint as Masterful Chef competition judge, she lets her judgement be clouded by Golden Shrimp Balls cooked by Smiley Yanxiao.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed; Keqing is a beautiful young lady, and though her usual wardrobe choice is modest, it is still tight-fitting, emphasizing her bust and legs a bit. Her Opulent Splendor outfit makes it much more apparent, revealing more skin and showing just how well-endowed she is, with the second-largest bust of any Medium Female character thus far (tying with Yoimiya).
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Keqing cooks her specialty dish, Survival Grilled Fish, using her Electro Vision rather than by using a normal flame.
    • The held form of her Skill allows her to cast a marker a short distance away in any direction, with the next consecutive use of its base form sending her to that marker in a flash. Useful for a few traversal challenges and out-of-reach Oculi, especially for getting onto overhanging roofs.
    • According to her namecard, her Lightning Stiletto was originally invented to test out her surroundings and climb to high places (through manually determining its trajectory with the held form her Skill). Players can apply this in exploration outside of its main use in combat.
    • In Genius Invokation TCG, the Lightning Stiletto card that's generated by her Elemental Skill behaves like any normal card, so it can be used for Elemental Tuning.
  • Nay-Theist: Deconstructed While it's true that Rex Lapis brought prosperity to Liyue, Keqing believes that humans should have their own pride, and someone should create a new path with their own hands instead of relying on a deity. Her ideals then became a heated topic amongst followers of Rex Lapis. She also derides Ganyu for being too devoted to Rex Lapis. By the end of the Liyue Archon Quest, however, she discovers that gods have a far wider scope of duties mere humans simply cannot hope to match, and they often work behind the scenes in ways that are not readily clear, and upon realizing just how hard Rex Lapis worked for the sake of Liyue, she has a newfound respect for him, to the point of secretly collecting his merchandise.
  • Non-Idle Rich: As far as we know, she's the most active of the seven. Despite being one of the wealthiest women in Liyue, she is known for getting down and dirty, taking menial tasks for her to better understand the common folk. At least once, during her work, she gets to find enough evidence to bring a certain powerful individual who underpays his workers to the law, and he did not realize who she was until it was too late. She also has a passive that cuts down expedition time in Liyue by 25%. This is also hinted by in one of her idle quotes.
(Chat: Delays) "Come on, enough procrastinating! Let's go."
  • No Social Skills: Played with. Keqing is more than capable of interacting with others just fine professionally, but the "Moonchase Festival" event shows her visibly struggling with interpersonal relationships. By her own admission she's not used to dealing with people who are warm and friendly from the outset, which manifests particularly with her self-consciousness about her friendship with Xiangling during the event's story, as she confides to the Traveler.
  • Oh, Crap!: Is visibly stunned and afraid when the final volley from the Jade Chamber's Guizhong Ballistae prompts Osial to unleash its strongest attack yet.
  • Out of Focus: In a sense. She is currently one of two 5-Star Characters who doesn't have her own Story Quest, the other being Qiqi.
  • Panty Shot: Her second Normal Attack gives the player a clear view of her backside, though this is minimized because she is wearing tights under her dress, which obscures her underwear.
  • Picky Eater: Though she soundly averts Does Not Like Spam, Keqing is picky about the flavor of certain stuff, remarking in her "Least Favorite Food" voice-over that she doesn't like stuff that tries to break the mold when it comes to flavors, such as salted Almond Tofu or sweetened Lotus Seed and Bird Egg Soup. This plays a bit into the "Spices from the West" event, as feeding her certain food has her express this once more.
"It, uh... seems quite a ways off from how it's supposed to taste..."
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Keqing wears opaque decorated tights under her dress in both her default outfit and Opulent Splendor, not only befitting as one of Liyue's elites but also letting her stay modest even as she fights and glides.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She is a member of the Qixing, is one of the most offensively powerful characters, and purple features prominently in her design.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Played straight, unlike Ningguang. Keqing is one of the leaders of the Qixing and a competent swordswoman who minored in an ancient form of swordsmanship, and will get her hands dirty if necessary.
  • Regenerating Mana: Her second Constellation upgrade, Keen Extraction, grants her a 50% chance to produce Elemental Particles whenever her normal or charged attacks hit enemies with an Electro effect.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Keqing's skepticism of the divine falls flat largely because her primary target, her own Archon, is dutiful, well-intentioned, and highly successful. It's a lot more convincing, however, when taking into account the much spottier track record among many of Teyvat's other gods, past and present. Leaving aside for a moment how good or bad The Seven's reign might be, Celestia itself seems to be hiding a lot of skeletons in its closet.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She hails from a noble family, and is one of Liyue's leaders.note  But she is often found leading the charge in both national projects and combat.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows who Xianyun is.
  • Skeptic No Longer: Her later story entries and voiceovers reveal that she has reconsidered her attitude towards Rex Lapis after his "departure." He has left a significant amount of work for the Qixing, which she and her peers struggle to fulfill on their own, leading her to realize that, despite her preconceptions, he has regularly looked after Liyue and worked behind the scenes, for which she gained a newfound respect. She then goes to learn all that she needed to learn to improve her work and tries to accept them all with open arms, quite different from her prior skepticism. In her work, she often finds herself lost and asking herself what would Rex Lapis do, and she has also swallowed her pride and started to ask Ganyu (a known Rex Lapis devotee, whom Keqing previously derides) for her opinions on work matters. It is to the point that she starts collecting Rex Lapis merchandise in secret. Ganyu also notes this in her own lines for Keqing, where she appreciates the change that the Yuheng underwent of her view.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
  • Spell Blade: Keqing's first-ascension passive, Thundering Penance, infuses all her regular attacks with an Electro effect for five seconds whenever she warps into a Lightning Stiletto. In Genius Invokation TCG, she can also infuse her normal attack using her Skill.
  • Sprint Shoes: Her utility passive, Land's Overseer, shaves 25% off of any Expedition to Liyue she is sent in.
  • Status Buff: Her fourth Constellation upgrade, Attunement, grants a 25% boost to her Attack for ten seconds after triggering any Electro-related reaction, while her sixth, Tenacious Star, bestows a 6% boost to her Electro Damage Bonus for eight seconds with normal or charged attacks or either of her Elemental Talents, all of which will be treated separately.
  • Stellar Name: Her title, "Yuheng," is the Chinese name of Alioth (Epsilon Ursae Majoris), which, despite its fifth-ranking designation by Greek letter, is the brightest star in the Big Dipper (and Ursa Major at large), which coincides with her prestige as the first 5★ unit of the playable Qixing characters (and as of v4.2, the only one from the ruling seven).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Her voice lines show she runs into this after Rex Lapis's departure. Turns out that the Geo Archon left large shoes to fill, and she must admit that she and the Qixing have a long way to go before they can make the Liyue they envisioned. Not that it is stopping her from working just as hard as before, if not harder.
  • Tareme Eyes: Surprisingly, for such an active, pushy person, she has these. They contrast with Ningguang's sharper eyes, and emphasize her youth and trustworthy nature.
  • Taught by Experience: In her character story, she goes by the principle "Yesterday's experiences will become tomorrow's strength." This is partly why she partakes in menial jobs, to experience the day-to-day lives of common people that she will not get if she stays in Yuehai Pavilion all day.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: While she works together with her as a fellow member of the Qixing, Keqing dislikes Ningguang as she considers her an unprincipled businesswoman who sees Liyue as nothing but a marketplace and values her profits over its wellbeing. This changes after the Osial incident proves that she too has Liyue's best interests at heart, with the two finding common ground, though they still butt heads on various matters.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Golden Shrimp Balls, which she says is enough to make her abandon all reason. During the "Moonchase Festival" event, her eyes light up when Xiangling mentions them, and is utterly crestfallen when Guoba later eats her plate clean of them before she had a chance to take a bite. And later during the finals of the cooking contest, she ends up voting for Smiley Yanxiao's for what's implied to be his inclusion of Golden Shrimp Balls, causing her some guilt until Xiangling reassures her.
  • Tsundere: A Harsh type towards her own Archon, Rex Lapis. Despite openly expressing her skepticism towards his guidance, by the time of his "departure" she has gained a newfound respect for him, realizing the amount of work he has left behind. Of course, she is not going to openly admit it, even when caught buying Rex Lapis memorabilia.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Not in terms of combat, but in leadership. She is skeptical about Rex Lapis's skills, wondering how a god that visits once a year could understand his people. After his departure, she begins to realize that there is much about running Liyue that she had never considered before. In her voice lines, she concedes that he really did know a lot, and has been reading up on him and the other Archons to try and figure out how they would have solved the various difficult problems she has been running into.
  • Unknown Rival: Works very hard to prove that Liyue doesn't need the help of Rex Lapis, not knowing that her land's Archon thinks the same, and has been quietly arranging a test for his people to prove it. If anything, she is one of his favorite humans.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Foreseen Reformation and Beckoning Stars, increase the talent levels of, respectively, Starward Sword and Stellar Restoration by three.
  • Utility Weapon: She can use Stellar Restoration to move quickly to a position, including to the air; this is useful for reaching high places and starting plunging attacks.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • Keqing is strongly associated with the Lion's Roar (4★), as shown in her Character Demo, Collected Miscellany video, and the climax of the Liyue Archon Quest, as well as an ascended variant for her Genius Invokation TCG character card. With its Ascension substat of Attack (9–41.3%) and its "Bane of Fire and Thunder" passive increasing damage against enemies affected by Pyro or Electro by 20–36%, it is well-suited for Keqing whenever she uses her Elemental Talents.
    • For her Test Run as part of her only specific Wish banner, as well as during the "Fleeting Colors in Flight" event, Keqing is also associated with the Primordial Jade Cutter (5★). In addition to its Ascension substat of Critical Rate (9.6–44.1%) further augmenting Keqing's specialization in critical hits, its "Protector's Virtue" passive increases its wielder's Max HP by 20–40%, in addition to an Attack boost equivalent to 1.2–2.4% of their Max HP, hence improving Keqing's survivability in conjunction with her raw offensive prowess.
  • Workaholic:
    • As the Yuheng, Keqing naturally handles large workloads, but she'll also go out of her way to handle more mundane tasks just to understand people of lower social standing than her, and has a tendency to handle anything that comes her way, however trivial it may be. Unlike Ganyu, however, she is no adeptus and therefore lacks the absurd stamina that allows the latter to handle her own massive workload and only suffer from mild drowsiness at best. As a result, this has a tendency to cause her coworkers and subordinates some concern, assuming they don't resign due to their inability to keep up. In fact, in two of her idle quotes, she will both chide the Traveler for idling too long and claim she doesn't like to think her balance between work and her life.
    • Unfortunately, she does not get that not everyone shares her work ethic, and her proposal to add one hour to the average workday went just as well as one would expect.
(Something to Share: Initiative) "[...] Whenever I propose something like adding an extra hour to the workday, I come up against very strong resistance... I'm too forward-thinking, I suppose. ...maybe I should start with a half hour instead?
    • This is actually the focus of the "Fleeting Colors in Flight" event story. At Ningguang's request, the Traveler and Paimon goes through some hoops to try and convince Keqing to take a break so that she can enjoy the Lantern Rite, which isn't helped not just by the sheer effort she's putting in administrating the fireworks placement and bringing gifts to the adepti, but by her taking on more work by investigating a series of fireworks thefts by the Treasure Hoarders. Eventually, with the help of Zhongli and using the words of other people they've bumped into, they convince her by making up a story about a world-famous chef who opened a restaurant that became popular overnight, only to be forced to close down six months later due to his refusal to take a break or take on help out of the arrogant belief that only he could make his amazing dishes, since it soon affected the quality of his dishes. While she quickly realises the story was fabricated, she agrees to take a breather and enjoys the fireworks with the others in the Jade Chamber.
    • Fortunately, "The Exquisite Night Chimes" event in 3.4 shows that she has mellowed since then. While she remains as hardworking as ever, she wasn't happy to know Ganyu planned to work herself to nigh-exhaustion for the next two days without sleep.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Contrasts with Ningguang as the other playable member of the Qixing with her default outfit being purple and having an Electro vision. Keqing also describes herself and Ningguang in having opposite personalities, seeing the Tianquan as nothing more than a money-grabber before the events of the Liyue arc. They managed to understand each other better after everything settled down, though Keqing is still occasionally annoyed by Ningguang's actions.

Uncle Tian, the Tianshu

Voiced by: Bill Butts (English)
The Tianshu of the Qixing, responsible for intelligence affairs.
  • Big Little Brother: He's a wizened old man, but calls the youthful-looking Ganyu as 'big sister'. Fully justified considering Ganyu's extended lifespan from her Adeptus heritage.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: You may first see him as an ordinary old fisherman NPC in Liyue Harbor who spends most of his time fishing as a hobby. During Ganyu's story quest she finally reveals that he is one of the Qixing.
Paimon: What! This grandpa is a member of the Qixing? The same rank as Ningguang!?
  • Foreshadowing: There are a couple of hints that Uncle Tian's more than he seems before you find out he is the Tianshu during Ganyu's story quest:
    • You can talk to his sister Yundan in Qingce Village, who mentions that her brother is doing an extraordinary job in Liyue that he likes to be secretive about.
    • Childish Jiang on Mt. Tianheng mentions that Uncle Tian visits the former's house occasionally to bring him food, with the implication that Uncle Tian orders the Millelith to help take care of him as well.
    • Ganyu's introduction quote in the forum announcement comes from the Tianshu of Liyue Qixing before her story quest’s release.
    • His name in Chinese, 天叔 (Tiānshū, literally "Uncle Tian"), is pronounced the exact same way as his position, 天枢 (Tiānshū).
  • The Good Chancellor: Apparently the Tianshu position is not a publicly visible one, and is a more advisory, behind-the-scenes role.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He's good friends with the millennia old Ganyu, who helped him adjust when he first ascended to his position in the Qixing.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: He pretends to be a senile old fisherman to most people, preferring to keep his real identity as the Tianshu a secret.
Uncle Tian: Fishing in the port and strolling about are the greatest pleasures of my life. I have no wish to be followed around by those armed guards. In most people's eyes, I'm just a forgetful and wordy old man.
  • Properly Paranoid: Yelan's story quest reveals that despite trusting Zhiyi, he has his doubts and thus tasks Yelan to assess his capabilities as Tianshu candidate. His caution is proven correct, though not quite enough since he still took quite a bit of poison from Zhiyi's scheme.
  • Punny Name: "Uncle Tian" in Chinese reads as "Tianshu", like his title "Tianshu" but with different hanzi.
  • Secret-Keeper: If you talk to him after Ganyu's story quest, he's implied to be one of the few NPCs that knows the truth about Rex Lapis' death.
  • The Spymaster: The Tianshu's position in the Qixing is concerned with the security of Liyue and Uncle Tian is all but stated to run his own intelligence network. In Yelan's story quest, she acknowledges that her own minions would come up short when put against someone of his skills, or those of someone he has personally trained.
  • Stellar Name: His title, "Tianshu," is the Chinese name of Dubhe (Alpha Ursae Majoris).
  • Think Nothing of It: In Ganyu's story quest, when he meets her, he asks her to help his daughter solve her problems. Ganyu, who was reluctant about going back to Liyue Harbor, accepts it without hesitation. Paimon and the Traveler notice how she has gone back to her "old persona" and that Uncle Tian is helping her that way. When you talk to him, Uncle Tian tells the Traveler to not think too much about it, as his daughter indeed needs Ganyu's help.

"'With authority over a thousand comes responsibility to a thousand.' Rex Lapis knows the meaning of hardship better than anyone else in Liyue — he has seen everything that has happened from ancient times to the present day, and yet he was forced to give up his entire life. Compared to him, I'm just an everyday Vision holder with everyday responsibilities. I can't complain about my workload."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Cryo
Weapon: Bow
Constellation: Sinae Unicornis, the Qilin

Half-adeptus secretary to the Qixing and emissary of its reigning Tianquan, Ningguang, as well as a comrade-in-arms of Rex Lapis during the Archon War, with whom she signed a contract to help keep watch over the nation as secretary. Given her dual heritage, however, she is struggling to fit in to a Liyue where humanity and adepti are beginning to drift apart. During the Traveler's invitation by Zhongli for dinner, Ganyu appears as an emissary for Ningguang to later invite them to the Jade Chamber, and she later helps them in the fight against Osial.

Ganyu's years of work experience translate to skills in crowd control, distracting her foes long enough to exploit her ability to further charge up her shots into Frostflake Arrows that, upon contact, flies up and splits into six icicles that fall onto surrounding foes. Her Elemental Skill, Trail of the Qilin, generates an Ice Lotus that draws in foes before exploding in a haze of cold wind, while her Elemental Burst, Celestial Shower, casts aloft the Sacred Cryo Pearl, an icy sphere that rains down icicles on surrounding foes.note
  • Almighty Janitor: Though officially a secretary, Ganyu is a half-adeptus veteran of the Archon War, and far more powerful in combat than her employers.
  • Bad Liar: From her voice line regarding Yaoyao, when asked what the Ministry of Civil Affairs does, she nervously tries to say she does not know, but it's quite clear to anyone that she does.
  • Badass Adorable: Ganyu is a short, young-looking lady with horns that reflect her Adepti heritage and a few other cute traits to her such as her concern for her weight and embarrassment over Cloud Retainer's stories about her. She's also a veteran of the Archon Wars, and hence one of Liyue's oldest defenders.
  • Big Eater: While her petite figure may say otherwise, Xiangling notes that she will eat everything on her plate, even when she has an extra-large serving. Her own line about Xiangling has her say that she normally tries avoiding Wanmin Restaurant lest she be tempted by the smell of the dishes. Her other story entry is about her written notes on tending to flowers in her workplace, which seem passable as academic work... were it not for her scribbled notes and crossed-out lines at the end about how she is tending them as vegetables, implying that the thought of her wanting to eat them slipped out onto her writings.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: "Goat-Horns," to be exact. Nobody in Liyue doubts her capabilities and professionalism, but she also has well-known quirks, like sleeping in the afternoon anywhere she can, or her vegetarian tendencies that sometimes slips into her work, or indeed, her odd "hairpiece."
  • Charged Attack: Ganyu can charge her shots for longer, creating Frostflake Arrows that deal wide-ranging Cryo damage. Her sixth Constellation upgrade, The Clement, negates the charging requirement of the first Frostflake Arrow shot within thirty seconds of using her Skill.
  • Child of Two Worlds: She's half-adeptus, and her Story Quest explores her identity crisis between her adeptus and human heritages. Her character story mentions that Ganyu the qilin finds it difficult to understand mortal squabbles, but Ganyu the human reminds her always to hold out hope that she might someday be able to fit in. One of her voice lines has her express a kinship with the Traveler for being "different" from normal humans, just like her situation.
  • The Comically Serious: In a Friendship voice-over, Ganyu admits her "hairpiece" to be her horns, and that she's half-Qilin. The rest is history.
(More About Ganyu: III) "I've had a long, hard think, and I've realized that so long as it's for a work-related matter, there's really nothing for me to be embarrassed about. So, if you really need to understand me more... this, um, hairpiece... it's actually my horns. That's right... I'm part-illuminated beast, Qilin to be exact. Okay, so... now that we've got that out the way... Please sign this non-disclosure agreement for me. And don't tell a soul!"
  • Consummate Professional: Subverted. While she refers to people professionally, she doesn't necessarily enjoy doing so. In fact, if the story is to go by, Ganyu feels lonely among the people in Liyue due to her inability to bond with them.
  • Cool Big Sis: Ganyu, as one of the oldest beings in Teyvat, inspires this to her underlings, especially to Uncle Tian. Although given her age, "Cool Old Lady" would have been a more accurate term.
  • Critical Hit Class: Her first-ascension passive, Undivided Heart, increases the Critical Rate of the second consecutive Frostflake Arrow fired within five seconds of the first one (as well as its subsequent bloom) by 5%. If she keeps shooting Frostflake Arrows, she can keep the buff for long. Combined with Cryo Resonance (with at least two Cryo units on hand, the party gains a 15% boost to Critical Rate against enemies afflicted with Cryo or Frozen) and her natural growth in Critical Damage (which can reach 38.4% at her sixth ascension), in addition to the appropriate equipment loadout, a well-developed Ganyu can dish out a whole lot of pain.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Ganyu's first Constellation upgrade, Dew-Drinker, allows Frostflake Arrows and their bloom to decrease enemies' Cryo Resistance by 15% for six seconds, as well as regenerates 2 Energy for Ganyu whenever they connect.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She takes center stage for the 2023 Lantern Rite event, as she partners up with the Traveler to uncover the origin behind a Fontainean folktale.
  • Death from Above: Her Burst summons a floating ice sphere that constantly rains icicles with a wide radius. With her fourth Constellation upgrade, Westward Sojourn, the damage to each enemy increases by 5% for every three seconds they are within the area-of-effect (up to 25%, equivalent to at least fifteen seconds) and will linger for another three seconds once they leave the field.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Ganyu is capable of doing insane amounts of damage even without Elemental Reactions. The problem is that her damage comes from aimed shots in compositions where she serves as the main damage dealer, which can be hard to use for most players and are prone to interruption. To remedy this, her Skill creates a decoy to distract her enemies to ensure that she can at least fire off a Frostflake Arrow. Once mastered, you'll see exactly what made Ganyu one of Rex Lapis' most trusted comrades-in-arms.
  • Ditzy Secretary: Despite being the secretary to the Qixing, Ganyu implies herself in one line that, in her years of experience, she has been prone to some mistakes. One of these would be when she napped in a cart, and accidentally ending all the way to Dihua Marsh.
  • Draw Aggro: Her Skill creates an icy lotus that draws enemies' attention before exploding and dealing wide-ranging Cryo damage either after six seconds or it has taken sufficient damage. This synergizes well with her aim-and-shot-oriented fighting style. Her second Constellation upgrade, The Auspicious, adds a second charge to the Skill.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Her Story Quest begins with her contemplating staying with the adepti after she saw Baishi, Baiwen, and Baixao handling her workload upon returning from Minlin after reporting to the adepti on the aftermath of the Osial crisis, thinking her task was a pretext for the Qixing to release her from her job. Not once did it occur to her that the three secretaries were just substituting for her.
  • Dub Personality Change: It's subtle, but in battle, if an ally is at low HP, she will meekly try to remember a saying by Rex Lapis. By contrast, she has no trouble being more assertive in the English version.
    (Chinese) "呃…「不可贸然进攻」!"Translation
    (Japanese) "えっと…「迂闊に攻めるな」です!"Translation
    (Korean) "아… 「경솔하게 공격하면 안 됩니다」!"Translation
(English) "Excuse me: plan first, then execute!"note
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: The characters of her name (甘雨; pinyin "Gānyǔ") are read as "Kan'u" (via on'yomi, or Chinese-derived, reading; hiragana かんう) in Japanese and "Gamu" (hangul 감우) in Korean.
  • Fantastic Arousal: Ganyu's horns are her most sensitive spot on her body, as evidenced when Shenhe pours some mint oil on them to wake her up. Ganyu asks Shenhe not to do it again.
  • Foil:
    • To Shenhe. Both are Cryo Vision holders who were raised and trained by Cloud Retainer, but in every other area they're opposites. Ganyu is a half-adeptus, is closer to humans than the adepti, and fights at range with a bow. Shenhe is a human often mistaken for an adeptus, is closer to the adepti than her fellow humans, and fights up close with a polearm. In terms of work, Ganyu has an important post with the Qixing that often sees her working overtime, while Shenhe is a waitress at Wanmin Restaurant that always gets off the clock on time. Ganyu's meticulousness that sees her do well at work also tends to make her overthink things, especially when interacting with people, while Shenhe's sheltered upbringing has made her more blunt while giving her an air of confidence. Fanservice-wise they differ due to their opposite clothing styles, with Ganyu's outfit drawing attention to her breasts and back, while Shenhe's to her hips and legs.
    • She's also a foil in several ways to Yanfei: both are female half-adepti, though through opposite parents (Ganyu, via her Qilin mother; Yanfei, via her Xiezhi father); they are, respectively, Cryo and Pyro Vision holders; and while Ganyu is unwavering in fealty to Rex Lapis and his vision for Liyue, Yanfei feels no particular loyalty to him or his ideals, though her law practice does dovetail with his adherence to contracts.
  • Formerly Fat: One of her character stories reveals that during the Archon War, a giant monster ate her and it choked to death trying to swallow her, and her great embarrassment inspired her to lose weight. Cloud Retainer also tells the Traveler and Paimon that Ganyu was so chubby as a child that she would roll down the mountain like a ball whenever she tripped. This embarrasses Ganyu to no end.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • Despite the fact her being a vegetarian, the player can still feed her meat-based dishes without issues whatsoever.
    • Though affiliated with Liyue, Ganyu's associated signature weapon is the Amos Bow, a bow with Mondstadt origins. This heavily contrasts towards all other 5★ charactersnote , where their signature 5★ weapon matches their affiliated nationnote . The other 5★ character with this distinction is Kazuha.
    • In Xianyun's Character Demo, Ganyu is shown to be adept in wielding swords and spears along with her archery skills. In gameplay, she is limited to wielding only bows.
  • Girl Friday:
    • Ganyu is a hardworking lady who helps the Qixing oversee everyday affairs as secretary, while also representing Ningguang to the Liyuan public. Her Story Quest shows that three human secretaries struggle to fulfill Ganyu's tasks she left behind when she was sent to report to the adepti on the Qixing's behalf.
    • As a part of her oath to Rex Lapis, Ganyu serves and aids the Qixing in their management of the country, despite some misgivings over Keqing's skepticism.
  • Glass Cannon: Ganyu is one of the hardest-hitting archers in the game, but her insane damage potential comes at the cost of being extremely fragile, and as an archer her skillset favors ranged attacks and hit-and-run tactics.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Discussed in her final ascension line, which has her say that she once read about how "Only when days be darker than the darkest night, may a Qilin be compelled to fight" (referring to the Qilin's normally peaceful nature). She then claims that it is an exaggeration, and indeed, she can (and did) fight when she truly needs to, even if she prefers peaceful resolutions.
  • Guile Heroine: In the second half of her Story Quest, Ganyu helps Huixin with her investigation of allegations of tax evasion by a pair of rival vendors, Bolai of Wanyou Boutique and Dongsheng of Second Life, using a social trick she calls "your enemy knows you best." First, she provokes Bolai into exposing Dongsheng's irregular tax reports by claiming the latter's shop has far better credit than his; then she travels to Qingce, where she found evidence from Fanmu Carpenters of Dongsheng's unaccounted-for purchase of some expensive furniture. Then she returns to Liyue Harbor to provoke Bolai into revealing Dongsheng's own dirty laundry with the knowledge of his underhanded purchase, correctly suspecting his rival of having ratted him out, after which she leaves Huixin to do the rest. Afterwards, Ganyu confesses to Huixin that she learned the trick from Uncle Tian, leading the latter to realize that she, who otherwise refused to ask for help from her father, still has much to learn from him. As Paimon puts it, Ganyu manages to help Huixin with both her work and her family problems at the same time.
Ganyu: "Pitting your opponent against their enemies and watching them drag each other down from an advantageous position." That's how Uncle Tian managed to keep his position in the Qixing secure for so many years. I figured that as Uncle Tian's daughter, you'd naturally grasp your father's strategies. So I decided to use one of your father's tricks and play it out for you to see.
  • Hartman Hips: Due to her wardrobe choice, it's evident Ganyu has some fairly wide hips on her.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She is half-adeptus, being part human and part Qilin.
    • She intentionally hides her Qilin heritage from most people, out of fear that people may distance themselves from her; only a handful of people (like the Qixing and her fellow adepti) know about it.
    • Her first story quest delves into this aspect of her in detail.
Xiao: "You're neither an adeptus, nor a human, always treading the line between the two worlds. It must create a lot of confusion."
    • One volume of the Records of Jueyun series describes one origin of her: one night, in a time when humans still wore clothing made of leaves and plants, a herb gatherer stopped by a mountain pool to bathe. A young Qilin passes by, not knowing of the conduct of the Zhenjun in human world, ate his clothes. Out of guilt, and concern for startling the vulnerable man, she transformed into a human form. Then the two went around in the mountain's wilderness for a whole night and slept together while "sharing ancient dreams." When the man woke up at dawn, the Qilin was gone. Legends say that either she left a basket in front of the herb gatherer's house before she disappeared, which held a baby, or she started to live among mortals, gave birth to children, and experienced the life of mortals.
  • Herd-Hitting Attack: In Genius Invokation TCG, she excels in dealing AoE damage that ignores shields and damage reductions.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has velvet-red horns that bend backwards along with her hair owing to her half-adeptus lineage. According to Chef Mao, Xiangling's father, the public seems to assume that she is wearing a headdress. She is sensitive about her horns, both physically and mentally; in her gameplay introduction video, after she wakes up, she says "please don't touch my horns".
  • I Am Not Pretty: Ganyu worries constantly about her figure and implicitly believes that people would discriminate against her if they discovered her "headdress" is actually a pair of horns. Though there are no comments on her overall appearance, Paimon remarks in one Serenitea Pot conversation that she thinks her horns are kind of cute.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Ganyu feels that as a half-adeptus, she has a trouble relating to the humans of Liyue beyond a professional level. She describes her being among the "sea of people" as "feeling the loneliness of an inhuman who doesn't belong in the human world." This is after she thought the Qixing abandoned her when she found out Baishi, Baiwei, and Baixiao filled her position while she was away (temporarily, unbeknownst to her). She thought she can start embracing her adeptus side, but the Traveler tries to convince her to return to Liyue despite some reluctance. Upon meeting Uncle Tian, she gets her "working mood" back and helps his daughter Huixin in her work. After that, Huixin expresses her sincere gratitude to Ganyu for the latter's help. This lightens up Ganyu so much that she realizes that people really do accept her as one of their own and see her as a tremendous help.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: When Cloud Retainer begins to share moments from her childhood again in the "Fleeting Colors in Flight" event, Ganyu tries to escape by suddenly "remembering" that she has an urgent matter to attend to. This, in spite being on leave throughout the Lantern Rite. Cloud Retainer also points out that since Keqing is present, Ganyu could simply settle the matter right there. Ganyu proceeds to claim that the matter involves Ningguang, and successfully makes her getaway when Keqing steps in to vouch for her.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: She's good friends with the Uncle Tian and his daughter Huixin despite being millennia older than them.
  • Kirin: She's half-Qilin, with the horns on her head reflecting her heritage. As such, she carries out both human and adeptus duties. And of course, she's on the side of good, having signed a contract with Rex Lapis millennia ago to watch over Liyue as secretary to the Qixing, reflecting tales of the Qilin's benevolence in Chinese Mythology.
  • Leotard of Power: Although very hard to see since it blends in with her black tights, Ganyu actually wears a high-cut black leotard that shows off her curves and exposes her back.
  • Long-Range Fighter: One of a select few characters who deals enough damage at long range to function as a party's carry. Ganyu's reliance on aimed shots and fragility encourages that players take advantage of this when possible.
  • Loyal to the Position: Ganyu has been serving as secretary for the Qixing for at least two thousand years.
  • Martial Pacifist: Her last Ascension line has Ganyu state she prefers peaceful resolutions to problems, similarly to Ningguang. That said, she claims that despite being a Qilin, she thinks their image as overly pacifist in nature is exaggerated. Indeed, she is a very capable fighter who in fact once fought alongside Rex Lapis two millenia ago.
  • Master Archer: Ganyu is noted to be a seasoned veteran of the Archon Wars, and her weapon of choice since then has been a bow. Her Normal Attack's name, "Liutian Archery", further implies her expertise, her Ascension lines note how she hasn't seen the need for power in a very long time, and her utility passive refunds some of the ore used to craft bows. Her fighting style even alludes to this trope, requiring some dexterity on her charged shots in order to deal the absurd damage she's capable of.
  • Meaningful Echo: Early in her Story Quest, a self-proclaimed pilgrim named Xin Cheng doubts that she's an adeptus as she talks more "like the city folk." In the end, when she returns to Yuehai Pavilion, one of the employees that filled her work says that she is like an adeptus who comes to save all life.
  • Meaningful Name: Ganyu's name means "sweet rain," fitting for a polite and nice, if meek and quiet, woman.
  • Meat Versus Veggies: Being half-Qilin and as noted by herself (and other characters like Xiangling), Ganyu is a vegetarian. She even likes eating Qingxin flowers and needs them for her ascensions. You can still use meat-based dishes on her though, since if you couldn't it would be frustrating.
  • Messy Hair: Ganyu has a lion's mane of a hair whilst very pretty looking, is also very messy and unkempt, which highlights her insane workaholic nature.
  • Mighty Glacier:
    • The bulk of Ganyu's raw damage comes from her charged shots, specifically her unique Frostflake Arrows, requiring that she spends a few seconds charging a single strong arrow strike each time instead of unloading a rapid volley of arrows. This means her attacks will hit very hard, but at a much slower rate than many other main DPS units.
    • In Genius Invokation TCG, she can deal an obscene amount of AoE damage with her Frostflake Arrow, and her Elemental Skill provides damage reduction. However, it takes as many as 5 Cryo dice to use Frostflake Arrow, so she would at most use it twice per round.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Ganyu is a good-looking lady whose clothing of choice is a skintight black leotard that leaves her back and shoulders exposed, as well as tights and high-heels. As a result, her outfit leaves little to the imagination. Her Twilight Blossom outfit manages to be even more sensual, forgoing the tights in favor of leaving her legs completely bare; as for her new top, while her back is mostly covered, there is now a Cleavage Window covered up only by sheer fabric.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Ganyu is fiercely devout to Rex Lapis and is deeply loyal to the Qixing that she serves even when they start taking harsher measures towards the other Adepti.
  • Mythical Motifs: The Qilin are divine beasts from Chinese Mythology known for their benevolence to all living things. Ganyu takes on that quality, with a twist: she signed a contract with Rex Lapis to watch over and help every living being in Liyue, and she does so in a more "human" way, i.e., becoming a secretary in Liyue's government.
  • Nature Lover: When not working with the Qixing, the focused and enigmatic Ganyu instantly transforms into a more airheaded and carefree girl who enjoys naps, long strolls, and flower-gazing on the shores of Dihua Marsh. Quite fitting for a gentle soul and a Qilin.
(Chat: Attentive) "If you lie on the grass, you can hear the heartbeat of the world."
  • Nice Girl: While her professional, nervous, and quiet demeanor means she doesn't get to show it too often, Ganyu is a warm, kind, and unfailingly polite lady, and usually has something good to say about people. It goes to the point she will passionately defend her friends and the people she is (or was) close with from others' opinions on them, such as Beidou and her master, Rex Lapis.
  • Onee-sama:
    • In the Japanese dub, Uncle Tian calls her this way; he has known her since he was young, and he claims he does it out of habit. She feels embarrassed about how someone of his position calls her that way. The Traveler can then have a dialogue choice where they tease her by calling her the same way.
    • Yae Miko refers to Ganyu formally as "elder sister" in her Japanese, Chinese, and Korean voiceovers, which is a nod to her senior age note .
  • The Quiet One: She is quiet and reserved, leading Xiangling to believe that she must feel lonely whenever she appears at Wanmin Restaurant. It is this trait that also causes her to be reluctant in questioning Keqing's orders even when she may personally disagree.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite having the appearance of a young woman somewhere in her late teens to early 20s, Ganyu is at least a few millennia old, and fought alongside Rex Lapis during the Archon War over two millennia ago. Following the reveal, the Traveler can snarkily ask how old she is and how it relates to her forgetfulness, a question she diverts away from.
"How short is a thousand years? To Ganyu, it has felt shorter than the blink of an eye. Throughout a passage of time unimaginable to mortals, Ganyu has been working on all manner of things at Yujing Terrace."
  • The Reliable One: She is to Liyue what Jean (and, to a lesser extent, Noelle) is to Mondstadt. As her character story puts it:
"Under almost all circumstances, Ganyu is a very trustworthy secretary. It is hard to imagine anyone outperforming her in the face of such an enormous workload, especially given her unique and penetrating insights into all of Liyue's matters."
  • Resource Reimbursement: Her utility passive, Preserved for the Hunt, refunds 15% of ores consumed when forging bows.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows that Zhongli is actually Rex Lapis. Moreover, despite being a horrible liar, she never outed him during Liyue's Archon Quest even though he's apparently been using the same human form as ever.
  • Secret Relationship: According to Beidou's remarks on Ganyu, they are close friends, though she worries about Ganyu running into some problems should people discover her associating with a known privateer, so she asks the Traveler to "keep it between us." Ganyu herself comments in her line about how people do not respect Beidou despite the latter's contributions to Liyue's prosperity, and then she acts as if it is not something that should "slip out" of her mouth.
  • Sensual Spandex: Downplayed. At first glance, Ganyu seems to wear a black bodysuit. Peek under her apron-like skirt, however, and eagle-eyed observers notice that she is actually wearing a black leotard with dark tights.
  • Sexy Secretary: She's been serving as the Qixing's secretary for many years, long enough for her to probably find more suitable clothing for the job than a skintight leotard worn over tights.
  • Sleepyhead: Though she can manage to remain quite focused while working and often puts in overtime, this means outside her duties she is perpetually drowsy, and on occasion even falls asleep out on the street or in areas with monsters. Fortunately, this will not actually happen in combat, though one of her idle animations has her almost doze off standing up. This got her in trouble at least once, where she accidentally ended up all the way to Dihua Marsh while she was sleeping inside a cart.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • Being part-Qilin, Ganyu is a vegetarian; accordingly, while she can otherwise eat those in normal gameplay, her disliked dishes in the "Spices from the West" events include all of the meat dishes.
"I appreciate the thought, but... meat's not really my thing!"
    • As a veteran of the Archon Wars, Ganyu was one of Rex Lapis' trusted allies, especially given her archery skills. In-game, her Talents and voice lines allude to her expertise with a bow, and she's a Difficult, but Awesome unit whose main source of damage comes from focusing before firing powerful, precise charged attacks.
  • Splash Damage Abuse: Frostflake Arrows can still do respectable damage even if she shoots it at the ground to hit multiple enemies with its blast instead of the initial arrow.
  • Status Buff:
    • In the battle against Osial, she provides the party with a buff that constantly recovers HP.
    • Her fourth-ascension passive, Harmony between Heaven and Earth, bestows upon the field of her Burst the ability to increase the party's Cryo Damage Bonus by 20%.
  • Trick Arrow: In addition to the normal elemental arrows, she can charge slightly longer to fire Frostflake Arrows that create a small shower of icicles wherever they land in effect, explosive ice missiles.
  • Undying Loyalty: Ganyu is very loyal and looks up to Rex Lapis, as she understands that he genuinely cares for Liyue and has worked for the country's sake and wishes she can be the same. This feeling is reciprocated by him i.e Zhongli.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Cloud-Strider and The Merciful, add three levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Vapor Wear: Between her Sexy Backless Outfit and detached sleeves, one can infer that Ganyu isn't wearing a bra.
  • Weapon Specialization: Though a weapon more associated with Mondstadt, Ganyu is frequently shown wielding Amos' Bow (5★), both in her Character Demo and Collected Miscellany videos, as well as an ascended form for her Genius Invokation TCG character card. With its Ascension substat being Attack (10.8–49.6%), and its "Strong-willed" passive increasing the damage potency of normal and charged attacks by 12–24%, with an additional 8–16% for every 0.1 second the arrow is in the air (to a maximum of 5 times, hence 52–104% if there is at least a half-second interval between the attack being launched and connecting to an opponent), this incentivizes Ganyu to maintain her distance while shooting down her enemies.
  • Weight Woe: She's overly concerned about her physique. Even though she is a vegetarian, she is also a Big Eater and she struggles to maintain her appetite in a city known for its culinary culture. She was also Formerly Fat: back in the Archon War, she was once Swallowed Whole by a giant monster, only for the monster choke to death as her waistline was wide enough to make her get stuck in its throat. Even though her fatness saved her, the whole experience was so embarrassing to her that she swears to not let something similar happen in the future.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Her voice-over about the Vision (quoted above) has her mention Rex Lapis' titanic responsibility to the thousand people he ruled, and that compared to him, she is merely a Vision holder with the responsibilities of a normal person.
  • Workaholic:
    • Justified, due to two reasons. First, she's the secretary to the Qixing, meaning her workload is incredibly heavy between managing paperwork and helping with development plans, among other things. Second, she's part illuminated beast, giving her the perk of enhanced stamina and thus allowing her to handle such heavy workloads that are placed on her.
    • Her Story Quest has Baishi, Baiwei, and Baixiao claim that even in her days off, Ganyu still thinks about working.
    • She asked the Traveler and Paimon if they would like to go with her to work overtime near the end of her character trailer. Granted, this may have been to keep her company, but the sentiment still fits...
    • In "The Exquisite Night Chimes" in 3.4, Ganyu and Keqing agree to split their work between the two, but Keqing, a fellow Workaholic herself, is shocked to hear Ganyu would do it in two days without sleep. The Yuheng suggests Ganyu to do it in three days... but sure enough, she still does it in two, leading herself to feel exhausted. She only manages to push through because of, again, her illuminated beast heritage.
    • She even says in her "Hobbies" voice-over that working is her hobby. Apparently, given how long and drawn out her job is, the Traveler points out to her the oddity.
(Ganyu's Hobbies) "[...] Why don't jobs count as hobbies? I thought hobbies are supposed to be things you look forward to doing, and that make you feel good when you've done them? That describes my job perfectly. So what's the issue?"
    • Unfortunately, this has also come at the cost of her social life, as she otherwise doesn't have too many friends. This, and her Qilin heritage, causes her to feel alienated and Lonely Among People. After thinking the Qixing replaced her while she was away, she contemplated staying in Minlin, but after the Traveler convinces her to return to Liyue, a little help of Uncle Tian and helping his daughter Huixin in her work lets her regain her working mood.

Burgeoning Grace
"Why do so many people make such a big deal out of "seeking the adepti"? There's adepti everywhere! Isn't there?"

Rarity: 4★
Element: Dendro
Weapon: Polearm
Constellation: Osmanthus

Madam Ping's youngest disciple alongside Xiangling, who has entered the service of the Qixing as personal assistant of Ganyu.

Yaoyao summons to her side Yueguis, channels of adeptal arts gifted to her by Cloud Retainer and disguised as stuffed bunnies, to fight alongside her by hurling White Jade Radishes either to damage foes or heal allies. Her Elemental Skill, Raphanus Sky Cluster, sends a "Throwing Mode" Yuegui, of which up to two can coexist and whose trajectory can be manually adjusted in its held mode, while her Elemental Burst, Moonjade Descent, damages surrounding enemies and endows Yaoyao with the "Adeptal Legacy" state, wherein, besides boosting her movement speed and Dendro Resistance, she will periodically summon "Jumping Mode" Yueguis, of which up to three can coexist, in addition to allowing the Radishes to simultaneously damage enemies and heal allies.note
  • Adorably Precocious Child: A cute little girl who often takes care of her seniors like an elder sister. A message she left on the Wangshu Inn Bulletin Board has her requesting the owner to refrain from putting chili peppers in Ganyu's food and to make the latter's bed extra soft and comfy to provide maximum comfort for her.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While many other Vision stories detail the exact situation in which characters received their Visions, Yaoyao's tells how she doesn't know why she got hers, and how she can only speculate as to why she was chosen.
  • Artificial Stupidity: Yuegui is ill-suited outside of healing or combat, as it will refuse to target objects that can be activated with Dendro, like Elemental Pillars or the Dendro Hypostasis's Restorative Piths. But for some reason, Yuegui will target torches, even though Dendro does nothing to them.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Given her nature as a mortal child (Qiqi being a centuries-old zombie), she is the youngest in the Liyue cast, as well as the youngest disciple of Madam Ping. With the other characters with a female child model being Klee (indeterminate chronological age due to being part of a long-lived nonhuman race), Sayu (mortal child but should be taller given her age), Diona (who has a normal job as a bartender), Dori (merchant who seems to be an adult), and Lesser Lord Kusanali (five-hundred-year-old deity), that makes Yaoyao the probable youngest playable character in the game, outside of perhaps Kirara (who was born a cat and may be only 1-3 years old).
  • Badass Adorable: Yaoyao is a child who nurtures other people out of a kind desire, even those older than her, and harbors a love for her bunny plush. Despite her size, she's also skilled with a spear, product of Madame Ping's tutelage.
  • Best Friend: With Qiqi. It is common to see them together in promotional art.
  • Character Tics: When talking about other people, she has a tendency to murmur anything that's even a bit negative, as if to make sure no one outside of the conversation overhears.
  • Cheerful Child: Described as "smiley" in her introductory post.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: A voice line from Xiangling in "About Yaoyao", and vice versa mentions that Yaoyao stopped Xiangling from attempting to eat a "fresh raw octopus from the Sea of Clouds", and if that wasn't enough, Yaoyao also sicced Madame Ping to tell her off as well. Considering the aforementioned chef's rather...unique attitude when it comes to culinary pursuits, this may be far from the first time this has happened.
Yaoyao: (About Xiangling) Xiangling hasn't been, um... looking for strange ingredients lately, has she? She gave me a real fright last time. She said she was about to try some raw octopus from the Sea of Clouds. One of these days, she'll give herself an upset stomach — then what's she gonna do? 'Cause she definitely doesn't like taking Dr. Baizhu's medicine... Anyway, I got Master to try and talk some sense into her, too. Who knows what dangerous thing she'll be trying to eat next...''
Xiangling: (About Yaoyao) [...] "Ugh... Honestly, sometimes it feels like I'm the one who gets treated like the junior..."
  • Combat Medic: The Yuegui usually hurls White Jade Radishes to damage surrounding enemies, except if there are nearby allies with less than 70% of their HP, in which case it will then shift priorities to hurling the Radishes to heal the one with the lowest HP percentage. Her Skill allows her to summon up to two "Throwing Mode" Yuegui, while the Adeptal Legacy state endowed by her Burst automatically summons up to three "Jumping Mode" Yuegui. Yaoyao's fourth-ascension passive, In Others' Shoes, gradually restores HP to allies caught within their damage radii for five seconds (at a rate of 0.8% of Yaoyao's Max HP per second).
  • The Cutie: Yaoyao is such an adorable, helpful, and friendly girl, even the otherwise aloof Cloud Retainer cannot help but dote on her.
  • Doppleganger Attack: During her Burst, she summons multiple Yueguis to attack the enemy.
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: The characters of her name (simplified 瑶瑶, traditional 瑤瑤, pinyin "Yáoyáo") are read as "Yōyō" (via on'yomi, or Chinese-derived, reading; katakana ヨォーヨ) in Japanese and "Yoyo" (hangul 요요) in Korean.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She first appeared alongside Qiqi in the mid-Autumn Festival 2020 art, about 2 years before she would be officially introduced as a character.
  • Edible Ammunition: Her bunny Yuegui attacks by tossing radishes at enemies.
  • Elemental Personalities: Yaoyao is one of the kindest, most nurturing (if a bit pushy) people in Liyue, and befitting this as well as her status as a healer, she has a Dendro Vision.
  • Fear of Thunder: In her "When Thunder Strikes" voice-over, she tries her best to be composed and help the player, even asking them to hold her hand if they're scared, when it's blatant the fearful one is her.
"Wh—Whaa! I—I'll cover your ears for you, a—and if you're scared, you can hold my hand!"
  • Flower Motifs: Her constellation is based on Osmanthus fragrans, a flower commonly used to make tea in Chinese culture, and she also has small four-petal flower patterns on her dress as well as two hair pins that resemble the flower.
  • Foil:
    • To Xiangling. While Xiangling is quirky and silly, Yaoyao is down-to-earth. She uses a Dendro Vision and is geared towards healing whereas Xiangling uses a Pyro Vision and is focused more on dishing out damage. Yeugui is also a contraption by the Adepti, while Gouba is a living creature and actually an Adepti known as The Stove God in the past.
    • To Qiqi as the other playable small girl from Liyue. In appearance, they have a green/purple Colour Contrast and Yaoyao ties her hair up while Qiqi's low braid reaches to her calves. Yaoyao is a mortal adeptus' disciple with her whole life ahead of her while Qiqi is a immortal zombie who is nominally part of the Jueyun adepti. Subsequently, Yaoyao is very lively and extroverted compared to Qiqi, and Qiqi is someone that Yaoyao gives extra care to due to her forgetful nature.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: From a gameplay standpoint; she is Ganyu's personal assistant in the Qixing and is Qiqi's best friend, but is a Dendro character; Dendro which has no Elemental Reactions with Cryo, which means that she has little to no synergy with the two
in-game.
  • Girl Friday: While she is officially under the care of Ganyu, Yaoyao serves attentively as her assistant, as shown by her notes on the Wangshu Inn Bulletin Board.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Not only does she have her stuffed bunny Yuegui, she also carries some smaller bunny plushies in her basket.
  • Killer Rabbit: Literally—the Yuegui is an adeptal device disguised as a stuffed quadrupedal bunny, and Yaoyao can sic them to hurl radishes that damage enemies and heal allies.
  • Loved by All: Yaoyao is beloved among all adepti, to the point where even Cloud Retainer, who is usually distant towards mortals, gave her an adepti treasure in the form of the Yuegui.
  • Moveset Clone: Yaoyao is specifically a Dendro-aligned hybrid of Xiangling and Sayu. Like the former, she is trained in the spear by Madame Ping, and her Skill allows her to sic a support unit (albeit in Yaoyao's case, she can also summon them with her Burst); and like the latter, said support unit either damages enemies or heals allies (albeit in Sayu's case, hers can only be summoned by her Burst), and they have identical utility passives that prevent certain wildlife from being startled upon approaching them.
  • Nice Girl: Yaoyao behaves like that younger sister that wants to take care of you as much as you took care of her, and while pushy, this only adds to her gentle and kind personality. Her introductory post, fittingly, describes her as a "warmhearted and considerate child". Even the Adepti (especially Cloud Retainer) love her!
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Yaoyao specializes in summoning Yueguis to fight in her place, which it does by hurling White Jade Radishes at the enemy.
  • Produce Pelting: Yueguis hurl White Jade Radishes that either damage enemies or heal allies. Yaoyao's first-ascension passive, Scarscatter, also allows her to automatically hurl the Radishes at nearby enemies every 0.6 second whenever she runs, sprints, or jumps while the Adeptal Legacy state is active, while her sixth Constellation upgrade, Beneficient, allows the Throwing-Mode Yuegui to hurl an additional Mega Radish every second White Jade Radish it hurls (up to twice), which has a wider damage radius, a damage potency based on 75% of Yaoyao's Attack stat, and the ability to heal the active character based on 7.5% of her Max HP should it hit opponents.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Pulls this on Beidou and her shipmates when she wants to play longer on board the Alcor, at the expense of the Crux's voyaging time; it usually works.
  • Regenerating Mana: Yaoyao's second Constellation upgrade, Innocent, restores 3 Energy (with at least 0.8-second intervals) whenever White Jade Radishes damage enemies while the Adeptal Legacy state is active.
  • Signature Headgear: Wears two extremely large adeptal bells that Madam Ping gave her on both sides of her head.
  • Status Buff:
    • Her first Constellation upgrade, Adeptus' Tutelage, bestows an eight-second-long 15% Dendro Damage Bonus boost and restores 15 Stamina to allies caught within the White Jade Radishes' damage radii.
    • Her fourth Constellation upgrade, Winsome, increases her Elemental Mastery stat for eight seconds based on 0.3% of her Max HP (to a maximum of 120 points, equivalent to at least 40,000 HP) whenever she triggers either Elemental Talent.
  • Stealth Expert: Played with. Like Sayu before her, Yaoyao's utility passive, Tailing on Tiptoes, prevents Crystalflies and certain animals from immediately fleeing whenever the party approaches them.
  • Super Mode: Yaoyao's Burst allows her to enter the Adeptal Legacy state for five seconds, during which she can automatically summon Jumping-Mode Yueguis that, like their Throwing-Mode counterparts, hurl White Jade Radishes to damage enemies and/or heal allies, with the key difference being that the damage radii of all Radishes generated (including those by the Throwing-Mode Yuegui) can now also heal allies, in addition to bestowing Yaoyao a 50-point boost to Dendro Resistance and 15% to her movement speed. In addition, her first-ascension passive, Starscatter, allows her to automatically hurl the Radishes while sprinting, jumping, or running, and her second Constellation upgrade, Innocent, restores 3 Energy to Yaoyao whenever the Radishes hit enemies.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Yaoyao is the youngest of the playable Liyue cast, as well as one of the smallest (alongside Qiqi, a centuries-old jiangshi who was zombified as a child).
  • Unseen No More: Yaoyao had yet to make a physical appearance until her introduction in v3.4, over two years after the game's launch. Before then she was only shown to exist in-game through voice lines, a message she left on the Wangshu Inn's bulletin board, and a few pieces of official artwork (usually involving Qiqi).
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Loyal and Kind and Compassionate, increase the talent levels of, respectively, Raphanus Sky Cluster and Moonjade Descent by three.

Valley Orchid
"Navigating the world is a whole lot easier with a few different identities to choose from. Need me to come up with some for you?"

Rarity: 5★
Element: Hydro
Weapon: Bow
Constellation: Umbrabilis Orchis, the Phantom Orchid

The secretive proprietress of high-end Yanshang Teahouse in Liyue Harbor and self-proclaimed spy for the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Little is known of her, apart from her descent from a family of thaumaturges that once fought alongside Morax, the Yakshas, and the Millelith during the Cataclysm, and her tendency to suddenly appear whenever a crisis ferments in Liyue, then disappear just as fast afterwards. Unfortunately, a certain crisis doesn't give her said chance to poof out during a trip to the Chasm, where she, the Traveler, and other familiar faces, beholds an incident involving one of the five Foremost Yakshas.

Yelan prefers striking at her foes from the shadows, exemplified by her ability to enter a state of "Breakthrough" whenever she is switched in after a long while, turning her first charged shot into a Breakthrough Barb that deals wide-ranging Hydro damage and has a sharply reduced charging time. Her Elemental Skill, Lingering Lifeline, has her disappear and bind her foes with a Lifeline, a string of light that explodes once she reappears, with an increasing chance to manually trigger Breakthrough for each bound enemy, while her Elemental Burst, Depth-Clarion Dice, strings surrounding foes with fast-exploding Lifelines, as well as summon the Exquisite Throw, a phantasmal die that fires three arrows made of Hydro energy in tandem with the active character's normal attacks, as well as Lifeline explosions.note
  • Benevolent Boss: Chuyi, the waitress of Yanshang Teahouse, used to "escort" away people who couldn't afford the tea, as instructed by the old administration. After Yelan took over, she made new adjustments and instructs the employees to greet and welcome everyone as a potential customer. The waitress becomes notably more polite towards the Traveler.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Towards the end of the "Chasm Delvers" World Quest series, Yelan saves the Traveler from Haftvad by firing an arrow at the Chasm Nail, sending hurtling down and crushing the mechanical serpent.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Every character released from v1.1 onwards would use materials from the most recently released weekly boss at the time of their debut when leveling up their Elemental Talents past Level 6. Yelan, however, is the first character to buck the trend, instead requiring materials from Azhdaha (an older released weekly boss) as opposed to Magatsu Mitake Narukami no Mikoto (the most recently released weekly boss at the time of Yelan's debut).
  • The Casino: She's the current boss of the Yanshang Teahouse, which is implied to be one of these. Her character demo also has shades of the aesthetic as well as a jazzy score, both of which pair well with her dice motif.
  • Cleavage Window: Her low-cut outfit creates a diamond-shaped opening above her chest, showing that she has a mole near the top of her right breast. Both the mole and the line of her cleavage are concealed somewhat by the tassel on her necklace, at least from the front.
  • Coat Cape: Yelan wears her white fur jacket like this. How it manages to stay on her shoulders after say, her normal combo attack where she does an acrobatic flip, is anyone's guess.
  • Dash Attack: A different take compared to other examples. Her Skill has her sprint forward to attack; making contact with enemies doesn't directly deal damage, but rather marking them so that they will take damage from the Lifeline generated.
  • Declining Promotion: At the end of her Story Quest, Yelan's efforts in exposing Zhiyi's collusion with the Fatui impressed Uncle Tian enough that he considered offering her his position as the Tianqiu of the Qixing once he retires for good. She declines, citing that such a position would require her to reduce, or even abandon, her field work, which she is loath to do.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: Her actual job is more along the lines of being a hidden detective, but between her skintight outfit, a furcoat, and a whip-like accessory, she gives off vibes of one. In her Character Teaser, having tied up a Treasure Hoarder with her Lifeline and even stepping on his head.
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: The characters of her name (simplified 夜兰, traditional 夜蘭, pinyin "Yèlán") are read as "Yeran" (via transliteration; katakana イェラン) in Japanese and "Yaran" (hangul 야란) in Korean (as well as Japanese if the characters are read via on'yomi, or Chinese-derived, reading).
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Long before her proper appearance, she first appeared twice throughout the "Chasm Delvers" World Quest series, first spying on the Traveler and the Chasm adventuring party, and later while saving the Traveler and Paimon from Haftvad.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Befitting her Hydro Vision, she has dark blue hair that fades to a lighter shade near the tips.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her clothes have various diagonal lines running along them, the left leg of her pants is unzipped, and she wears a white short glove on her left hand but a long black one on her right arm.
  • Flower Motifs: The orchid, a symbol of good taste and beauty in Chinese culture, befitting one of the most beautiful, if enigmatic, women in Liyue. Her name translates to "night orchid", and her Constellation's name also means "phantom orchid."
  • The Gambler: Yelan has a prominent dice motif and is a well-known gambler in Liyuan circles. People are warned away from playing against her, as she always wins.
  • Gathering Steam: Played with by her Breakthrough mechanic, which turns her first charged shot into a Breakthrough Barb which deals wide-ranging Hydro damage and has a massive 80% reduction in charging time. This is normally inverted in that she enters this state if she is switched in after at least five seconds, then played straight if she triggers it after damaging enemies with her Lifeline, with a base 34% rate for each bound enemy (i.e., she needs to string at least three foes to guarantee her the state).
  • He Knows Too Much: As a necessary part of her job to safeguard the Qixing's classified information, Yelan makes it clear to friend and foe alike that she will not take kindly to anyone trying to pry into their private business, giving veiled death threats to people to mind their own business and not disclose anything she has to say to them. This is the primary reason why Yelan refuses to participate in the door of fear in "Perilous Trail" to search for Xiao, as she knows the Chasm's Bed can read her mind and would likely put the Qixing's secrets in full display for everyone to see if she opens it.
  • The Hermit: Despite what her appearance and personality might imply, Yelan lives alone in a simple hut on the far outskirts of Liyue (implied to be the house east of the Stone Gate checkpoint). She notes in her Serenitea Pot dialogue that it is harder to track her down this way, and that she simply enjoys being away from the hustle and bustle of Liyue Harbor.
  • Heroic Lineage: Yelan hails from a clan of thaumaturges. Two of her ancestors fought during the Cataclysm alongside Bosacius.
  • Improbable Use of a Weapon: The third hit of Yelan's basic attack pattern has her kick her bow, which then flies back into her hands like a yo-yo.
  • Informed Flaw: In Yelan's voiceline about her troubles, she mentions that she has a poor constitution that forces her to conserve her energy for when it's truly necessary. She never once suffers from exhaustion in the Archon Quest she debuts in when everyone else does, although it's justified by the fact that time and space is distorted in the Chasm's Beld. Also appears as a bit of Gameplay and Story Segregation, as Yelan's abilities scale off of her Max HP, resulting in her being quite resilient with a semi-functional build.
  • In Harm's Way: Yelan is explicitly an intelligence agent because she finds danger absolutely thrilling.
  • In the Blood: It's thought that Yelan's habitual thrill-seeking is a manifestation of the corruption contracted by her ancestor Rongzhao during the Cataclysm, which also implies that her other Shared Family Quirks like her poor constitution and taste for raw Jueyun Chilis were passed down to her.
  • Intimate Marks: Has a mole over her right breast, just visible above her top.
  • Invisibility: Her Skill turns her into an invisible watery phantom. She is shown using this ability to conceal herself from the Fatui in her character teaser. Despite this, enemies can still see her through if this is done in-game.
  • Jiggle Physics: Downplayed; Yelan definitely has them, as with many of the female characters, but somewhere down the line hers got toned down.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Yelan can move incredibly fast with her Skill, and she can deal impressive damage while the Exquisite Throw is active. To top it off, her abilities scale off her Max HP, meaning she's incentivized to be incredibly tanky.
  • Magical Accessory: Yelan wears a bracelet on her right arm which lights up whenever she has entered a state of Breakthrough.
  • Master of Disguise: Yelan often visits Bubu Pharmacy in disguise for her several injuries and hasn't once been identified as a repeat customer.
  • Mirror Character:
    • Of Kujou Sara, a taller woman of authority who also uses a bow in combat in addition to having similar hairstyles. They both similarly do not get along with Arataki Itto.
    • She also has a few similarities to Rosaria, both being taller women who work from the shadows to protect their respective nations and are known for being somewhat aloof. Although unlike Rosaria who does it of her own accord, Yelan does it as part of her work for the Qixing.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Yelan is a stunningly gorgeous and well-endowed woman who wears an elegant, form-fitting bodysuit with a Cleavage Window and leggings that highlight her long legs while leaving parts of her thighs, as well as her back and shoulders, completely exposed. She also has a mole on her right breast, further drawing attention to her chest.
  • Motifs: Dice. She wears a die-shaped charm on her necklace, and both her Elemental Burst, Passive Talents, and Constellation upgrades are all gambling-themed, in addition to said Burst summoning a phantasmal die that deals extra damage.
  • Mundane Utility: Her Skill allows her to run fast without consuming stamina, making it useful if you need to cover more ground in a shorter amount of time when your stamina is low and needs to recharge, much like Sayu's Skill. The downside is that its held form only lasts three seconds, and touching a deep enough body of water will cancel it out. Additionally, much like Mona and Ayaka's alternate sprints, it's possible for her to sometimes get stuck on small obstructions such as stairs if you are using the skill for its movement utility. This (along the aforementioned alternate sprint issue) was fixed in v3.0.
  • Mysterious Woman: A woman who often introduces herself under different identities and has been at the center of a number of major events.
  • Not a Morning Person: She is never up in the morning unless she has urgent business, and otherwise begins her day at noon.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: During the second Archon Quest Interlude, she protests Xiao's willingness to sacrifice himself and stay behind the Chasm's Bed to get her, the Traveler, Paimon, Yanfei, Itto, Shinobu, and Ushi out; it is implied that she has Survivor's Guilt from having lost comrades-in-arms in an unspecified incident long ago.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her professionalism, an irate Yelan responds to Itto's provocations and begins emitting a Battle Aura of her own to match Itto's... which causes the rock they're standing on to give way and plunges them into yet another secret area.
  • Not So Stoic: During the second Archon Quest Interlude, despite her being a Thrill Seeker and a cool-headed secret agent, Yelan briefly shows concern when she realizes that Xiao is prepared to sacrifice himself and is seemingly shocked when he teleports everyone away.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: At the end of her Story Quest, she offers Zhiyi, who she has recently arrested for poisoning Uncle Tian and colluding with the Fatui, protection from the latter in exchange for divulging information about them and Pantalone, the Harbinger in charge of Northland Bank, knowing that Zhiyi has also offended the Fatui by poisoning his collaborator Yusupov.
  • Painted-On Pants: She wears skintight black leggings accentuating her slender legs.
  • Pretty in Mink: Her jacket is conspicuously fur lined. Her backstory reveals that she stole it from Pantalone, ninth-ranking and wealthiest of the Fatui Harbingers.
  • Rain of Arrows: The Exquisite Throw fires three Hydro-elemental arrows in tandem with the active character's normal attacks, as well as Lifeline explosions. Her fourth-ascension passive, Adapt With Ease, grants the active character a 1% damage boost once it is in play, with an additional 3.5% per second (unless they are reset through the second consecutive use of her Burst), to a maximum of 50% (or after fourteen seconds have passed). Her second Constellation upgrade, Taking All Comers, allows it to fire a fourth arrow within at least 1.8 seconds, with damage based on 14% of Yelan's Max HP.
  • Random Drop Booster: Her utility passive, Necessary Calculation, increases rewards by 25% when dispatched on an Expedition in Liyue for twenty hours.
  • Razor Floss: Her Skill ensnares enemies she comes across with the Lifeline, a string of light that explodes and deals Hydro damage; in addition, lighter enemies will be pulled in Yelan's direction, and each enemy struck has a 34% chance to trigger Breakthrough without having to switch her out for at least five seconds. Her first Constellation upgrade, Enter the Plotters, adds one charge to the Skill, while her fourth, Bait-and-Switch, bestows the party a 25-second-long boost to Max HP by 10% for every enemy struck (to a maximum of 40%, or at least four enemies).
  • Secret Police: Fufills this role for the Qixing. Yelan carries out intelligence gathering operations within and around the city, and finds, fixes, and finishes threats such as Fauti Agents in her character trailer.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her skintight bodysuit leaves very little to the imagination. It's also unzipped at the back, leaving her shoulders and back exposed.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Yelan's first major appearance involves helping the Traveler defeat Haftvad, a unique Ruin Serpent, from the shadows, and her Story Quest has her tangling with the Fatui collaborating with Zhiyi. Unsurprisingly, she can collect Fatui Insignias for level cap and talent ascensions, as well as use Runic Fangs dropped by generic Ruin Serpents for the latter.
  • The Spook: Due to the extremely confidential nature of her work, very few in the Ministry of Civil Affairs know she works there, let alone who she even is; those who do know her rarely see her, and very tactfully note her status as an employee. On a broader scale, Yelan has been known to mysteriously appear within the ranks of either side of any given conflict, only to disappear without a trace once said conflict has been resolved.
  • The Spymaster: Her role in the Ministry of Civil Affairs is to gather intelligence on threats to Liyue and deal with them accordingly. She commands a network of spies and informants around Liyue Harbor, and is not afraid to get her hands dirty, as some Fatui she accosted can attest to.
  • Status Buff: Yelan's first-ascension passive, Turn Control, grants her a 6% boost to Max HP, which can grow depending on the number of elements represented in her party (12% with two elements, 18% with three, and 30% with four).
  • Stuff Blowing Up: When in the Mastermind state granted by her sixth Constellation upgrade, Yelan can unleash up to five rapid Hydro explosions as a result of her much more spammable normal arrow attacks being converted into Breakthrough Barbs.
  • Super Mode: Her sixth Constellation upgrade, Winner Takes All, allows her Burst to bestow the Mastermind state, which turns her normal shots into Breakthrough Barbs with 56% more damage potency than that of its "normal" counterparts, lasting either until 25 seconds have passed or she has fired five such arrows.
  • Thrill Seeker: She takes great excitement and pleasure from such dangerous activities as hunting dangerous monsters or crossing swords with the Fatui, to the point of declining Uncle Tian's offer to be his successor as the Tianqiu of the Qixing, lest its fairly stationary nature curb her wanderlust.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Xiangling's voiceline about Yelan reveals that she has ridiculously high spice tolerance. Not only is she capable of handling Xiangling's dishes, she finds them not spicy enough and adds more raw Jueyun Chilies. According to Yelan, it's a family tradition.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Beware the Trickster's Dice and Dealer's Sleight, add three levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Water Is Womanly: Yelan's Hydro vision matches with her calm, cool demeanor, but she can also show a more temperamental side, just like the ocean.
  • Weapon Specialization: Yelan's Wish banner runs concurrent with that for Aqua Simulacra (5★). Its Ascension stat is Critical Damage (19.2–88.2%), while its "The Cleansing Form" passive boosts its wielder's Max HP by 16–32%, as well as increases their damage output by 20–40% whenever there are nearby foes and even while they are off-field, which pairs well with her sub-DPS niche, given that the damage of both her Elemental Talents scale off of her Max HP, as well as further boosting her Exquisite Throw if the active character is a melee fighter.
  • Whip of Dominance: Downplayed as she's a bow user, but befitting of her dominatrix theme, her lifeline acts like a whip.

  • Militaries Are Useless: Compared to the Knights of Favonius, who while criticized often by Diluc are more than capable of defending Mondstadt from outside threats, and the Tenryou Commission, who have elements of corruption but are effective at carrying out the Shogun's will and dealing with armed resistance, the Millileth generally get the short end of the stick. Not only do they attempt to arrest the Traveler on false charges with only circumstantial evidence at best, but their pursuit of them has them trespass on sacred ground without permission to enter, getting the Qixing in trouble with the Adepti in the process and nearly causing them to come to blows before Childe summons Osial to attack Liyue Harbour.
  • The Millstone: Might as well be renamed this. They cause so many problems for the Traveler during the Liyue chapter that come Tartaglia's story quest, the Traveler doesn't exactly have a positive image of them compared to the Knights of Favonius.
  • Too Dumb to Live: During their pursuit of the Traveler, they end up trespassing on Adepti grounds to arrest them, even disrupting their audience with Moon Carver in the process. Not only do they get their asses kicked for their blasphemy, they get the Qixing in trouble with the Adepti, who now wonder if they won't abuse their power considering how incompetent their law enforcement appears to be. It's established later on that even the Treasure Hoarders know better than to aggravate the Adepti, further highlighting what a blunder this was.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Liyue sure has gone through some serious militarization over the course of a year. They go from being more or less helpless during Osial's attack to being armed with Guizhong Ballistae during Beischt's.

    Yanbo

Yanbo

Voiced by: Edward A. Mendoza (English)
A Millelith squad leader disguised himself as an undercover treasure hoarder.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: The Traveler is so stunned with his statements about individuals or groups that seek to obtain elemental powers and wonders if such people attaining them would be worth it if they simply become pawns for their own scheme, that the Traveler is unable to respond to such question.
"A mission that we would have needed weeks, even months to accomplish, was but child's play to you... If turned to evil, such abilities could produce outsize damage at a very small price. That's why I don't really rue the fact that I don't have a Vision. I have seen people who dedicated their lives to seek superhuman power, only to become tools and puppets for others to use as they pleased. Do you think that was worth it?"
  • Mistakenly Attacked Mole: The Traveler mistakes him and his fellows in disguise for actual Treasure Hoarders and attacks them.
  • Muggle Power: Discussed. He is at awe with the Traveler and the Vision holders because they can channel and manipulate elements, while fearing them at the same time due to their destructive potential. He fears that if misused, it will instead be used for their own selfish gain, and notes that there are those that seek superpowers to gain an equal footing. Hence he doesn't complain about the fact that he doesn't have a Vision.
  • Odd Friendship: With Anton Melnikov, a Fatuus, making him one of the few Millelith soldiers willing to help him and his squad out via by secretly sneaking in rations for them to eat. He laments that the two of them would have to fight and tells him that he is only doing this for his home country much like how Anton is fighting for the Tsaritsa, a sentiment that the latter agrees with.

Candidates

    For Tianshu (Unmarked Spoilers)

Mingbo & Qianwei

Qianwei Voiced By: Daniel J. Edwards (English)
The Candidates of Tianshu alongside Zhiyi.
  • Didn't Think This Through: According to Yelan, Qianwei's plans involve new ideas, but lacks any major details that are crucial.
  • No Social Skills: According to Yelan, Mingbo comes up with the most reliable plan as possible, but due to having poor communicative skills and charisma, he might cause any problems due to misunderstanding.

Zhiyi

Voiced by: Brandon McInnis (English)

A student of Uncle Tian, and a prospective candidate for the position of Tianshu.

  • All According to Plan: When a poisoned Yusupov warns him of the Fatui's retaliation, Zhiyi reveals that he already struck a deal with Yusupov's immediate subordinate, Theofan, who had always clamored to usurp his superior, where he would help the latter claim the position by arranging for Yusupov to die in an apparent accident in exchange for the latter erasing all evidence of the former's dealings with Yusupov in his quest to become the new Tianshu.
  • Arc Villain: Of Yelan's Story Quest.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He is talked up as an amazing and flawless person deserving of being the successor to Uncle Tian. He is actually manipulative and malicious, poisoning both Tian and the Fatui emissary he was working with.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He poisons his mentor to gain his position while in a partnership with the Fatui. However he also poisons Yusupov with intent on claiming the victory for himself.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: As Uncle Tian's most promising protégé, Zhiyi had a solid shot at succeeding him as Tianshu even without his evil plan. However, his lack of faith in himself caused him to believe he needed to resort to underhanded tactics.
  • Fatal Flaw: Low self-esteem. Despite having the trust and respect of Uncle Tian, he had little faith in his own ability to outshine his peers of higher status, causing him to delude himself into thinking he had to resort to underhanded tactics to succeed... which led to him working with the Fatui and poisoning his own mentor.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Yelan tore into him betraying Uncle Tian's trust, Zhiyi sounds genuinely crushed.
  • Out-Gambitted: He manages to be one step ahead throughout Yelan's story. In the end though, Yelan manages to best him by tailing his associate Yusupov, causing his whole plan to fall apart.
  • The Puppet Cuts His Strings: The Fatui aid him in an attempt to place a pawn in the Liyue Qixing, but Zhiyi turns out to be much more treacherous than they bargained for and poisons the Fatui diplomat he was working with to remove all Fatui influence on him.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Zhiyi wasn't a bad person when Uncle Tian initially took him under his wing. However, he would then be corrupted by his Fatal Flaw above.
  • Saying Too Much: Zhiyi gloating to Yusupov over having screwed him over becomes his undoing as Yelan, together with the Traveler and Paimon, has been eavesdropping on their conversation and took pictures, as well as brought a Millelith squad with her to storm the hideout to prevent any further escalation. The result is Zhiyi being arrested for his dealings, with a high-ranking officer of the Qixing as witness; as this also prevented him from destroying the evidence, it will only be a matter of time before the other Fatui discover his treachery and mark him for death, leaving him no choice but become The Stool Pigeon for Yelan in exchange for protection.
  • Secretly Earmarked for Greatness: Defied. In Yelan's Story Quest, Uncle Tian had his eyes on Zhiyi to be worthy of succeeding him for the Tianshu position of the Liyue Qixing since he has known that Zhiyi has the skill set necessary for the job, which is backed up by Yelan evaluating him among three potential candidates to be the best of the bunch. However, a later undercover investigation of Zhiyi by Yelan revealed that Zhiyi had contacted the Fatui to poison Uncle Tian so his worsening health can increase his odds at becoming the Tianshu, and later double-crossed the Fatui in a clever gambit. Zhiyi was eventually caught and detained by Yelan, disqualifying him from the position entirely.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Per his deal with Yelan, in exchange for additional security, Zhiyi has to reveal all his co-conspirators.
