Characters / Food Wars! - 92nd Generation

Go To

Each school year at Totsuki is known as a 'generation.' The students who were in their first year at the start of the story are known as the 92nd Generation. At this point in their career, many students are unable to keep up with the curriculum and are frequently expelled. In general, only around 10% on average move on to the next year.

In General

  • The Chosen Many: Several members of the 92nd generation were specifically chosen by Tōtsuki officials to serve as stepping stones for Erina.
  • Squad Nickname: During the Promotion Exams Arc, The Polar Star dorm members, along with the Nakiri cousins, Kurokiba, the Aldini brothers, Mito Nikumi, and Hisako Arato are named "The Rebels" for going against Central. The entire generation as a whole has the nickname The Jewels Generation for possessing a number of notable prodigies.

    Takumi Aldini

Takumi Aldini

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese), Bryson Baugus (English), Leonel Arias (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takumi_aldini_anime.png

First-year Takumi is the eldest son of a Japanese chef from Florence-based Trattoria Aldini. He goes to Totsuki with his younger twin brother Isami during middle school to demonstrate their skills, and when Soma declares his intentions at the opening ceremonies, Takumi becomes fired up to do even better than that upstart from a backwater restaurant.

  • Aloof Big Brother: Subverted; Takumi is aware he's the more talented of the twins, but he's still proud of Isami's (considerable) skills. Isami, in turn, doesn't resent Takumi in the slightest, and supports his brother to the extent that Takumi refers to him as "my other half".
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Downplayed, but he asks Rindou what she's "so afraid of" when he faces against her. The question doesn't break her, but clearly rattles her.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: After his match with Mimasaka, he takes the lesson that he needs to learn more about his opponents. By the time of his battle with Eizan, not only does he know from past patterns that Eizan will try to cheat, he's also able to figure out based only on the ingredients available in the pantry that it'll be by using the cynarine in artichokes to alter the judge's taste buds. He tailors his pizza to be enhanced by the chemical and wins handily.
  • Badass Boast: During his introduction to Soma as a defender of his family trattoria while pulling out his weapon; A huge mezzaluna mincing knife.
"Sorry for the tardiness. My name is Takumi Aldini. This is my twin brother Isami Aldini. We worked in a kitchen of a trattoria in our hometown. It's a word in Italian that refers to the so-called 'restaurant of the masses'. I am just like you, Yukihira. I, too, am a chef that's protected his shop from the kitchen. You said that you 'don't plan to lose to some bunch that has never stood in front of clients'? Say that after you have defeated me. Between Aldini and Yukihira, I'll show you which is better."
  • Badass in Distress: In the battle round of BLUE, Takumi is in a team battle against the Noir Don Calma who had Takumi's brother and only partner Isami kidnapped. Luckily for Takumi, Soma arrives to his rescue and the duo finish off Don Calma.
  • Batman Gambit: His plan to counter against Eizan banked on the possibility of his opponent using artichoke, knowing well that Eizan would try to sabotage him. Not only did he impress the judges by adjusting the shigureni topping's flavor to compliment the aftertaste, but also paved the way for the second half of his pizza.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Outsmarts Eizan Etsuya in the Team Shokugeki, by out gambitting him.
  • Berserk Button: Don't dare to insult Isami by calling him "a second-rate cook".
  • Big Brother Instinct: Takumi, who could have rejected the Shokugeki, accepted Subaru's conditions to defend Isami's honor.
  • Big Damn Heroes: With only one hour left before the rankings were announced, he, along with Isami and Ikumi, arrived to aid Soma's booth.
  • Break the Badass: Subaru not only defeats him, but also hurt his pride by predicting all his actions (including improvised options), stained his Mezzaluna knife and took it away and insulted his brother. After said Shokugeki, Takumi spent the entire week depressed in his apartment with a broken look in his eyes.
  • But Not Too Foreign: The Aldini twins are half-Japanese, but grew up in Italy. They've used their unique upbringing to make more flexible dishes such as using Japanese ingredients in an Italian style or vice versa. From the twins, Takumi has more Caucasian features, to the point one of the staigiere owners was ready to dismiss him before seeing him in action.
  • Butt-Monkey: Every time he wants to boast, the moment turns awkward.
  • Challenge Seeker: He constantly wants to engage Soma in a competition, but they usually fall flat.
  • Chick Magnet: He is said to have a fanclub in Totsuki, and also older females are seen gushing over him as he enters the arena.
  • Cool Big Bro: Downplayed. Isami doesn't hold back whenever Takumi embarrasses himself and calls him "lame". Outside of that, he does admire Takumi's superior skills as a chef and declares to be proud of him, while Takumi himself makes sure to remind Isami that he is his other half.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Downplayed. Soma defeats Subaru and gets Takumi's Mezzaluna back, he rejects it, declaring that he will earn it back by his own merits. It's not a case of outrage, or contempt for Soma's action, rather just his pride as a chef and a rival to Soma that he wants to honor.
  • Endearingly Dorky: When his Badass Boast turns into an Epic Fail. It happens a lot. Isami and Soma use these moments to tease him even further.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Takumi is first introduced stomping on Soma's foot, marking himself as an intimidating opponent... before his brother Isami laughs at him in the following scenes.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Constantly. He's always trying to make a big show of being Soma's rival. He usually gets interrupted by someone or something(mainly his brother) before he can finish or his declarations lose all impact shortly afterward, see Failed Dramatic Exit below.
  • Failed Dramatic Exit: He leaves with a dramatic declaration that he'll defeat Soma next time they meet, only to end up sitting next to him on the bus.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: The only physical resemblance he has with Isami are the skin tone and their light blue eyes.
  • The Fashionista: In contrast to Soma (who wears hantennote ), Takumi's plain clothes are very stylish, since Italians are very fashion-conscious. After the Internships period, Takumi's first words to Soma are to comment on his hair being messy, while he himself sports a new haircut.
  • Friendly Rivalry: He tries competing with Soma, but the two of them seem to get along pretty well, though the latter finds it difficult to take their rivalry as seriously as Takumi does, mainly because Takumi's challenges often go over his head.
  • Foil: He is immediately compared to Soma because they are both professionals before they are students, having worked for years in the kitchen of their family's restaurant. Unlike him, Takumi is extremely popular with the girls (in his first month at Totsuki, Takumi garnered a fanclub of 85 members, while in Soma's case, most of the school hated his guts); while Soma is cool and a bit of a tease, Takumi mostly embarrasses himself whenever he tries to pose as cool. Despite all this, both guys are Sore Losers, very loyal towards their family and friends and the most creative and resourceful chefs from their generation.
  • A Glass in the Hand: Soma gives Takumi a bag of kaki seeds to hold onto while he goes to search for ingredients during training camp. In frustration, Takumi crushes the bag with his grip, but it was what Soma wanted to do, anyway.
  • Gratuitous Italian: From the two, Takumi is the one who uses more Italian words, most commonly "grazie" ("thank you").
  • Glove Slap: Right before their match and in front of the whole school, Takumi throws a glove to Subaru to make the duel official, asking in exchange for his win a public apology to Isami.
  • Guile Hero: During his match with Eizan in the Regime de Shokugeki, he anticipated that Eizan would use some sort of method to disrupt his dish by studying his previous matches, and made his dish based around that. Eizan's dish originally was meant to make Takumi's taste worse after the Judges ate his first, but Takumi worked to make it complement his dish instead. This was made possible by Takumi learning Subaru's tracing method and doing an extensive study of Eizan's duel records.
  • Heroic BSoD: After Subaru beats him, Takumi is seen depressed in his apartment, while a worried Isami passes him a message from Soma. He snaps out of it after Soma defeats Subaru, promising that he will beat them someday.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With his brother, Isami — the two are rarely ever apart. He also seems to be developing a rivalry version of this relationship with Soma.
  • Hidden Depths: Takumi is a Nice Guy and Spirited Competitor, which is why he and Subaru eventually reached an understanding after the latter's match with Soma, and formed a genuine friendship later on during the Central arc. But make no mistake, Takumi can hold one hell of a grudge. Unlike with Subaru, Takumi had nothing but contempt for Eizan after learning about his plot to get Soma expelled during the Autumn Elections using the close relationship of the Aldini brothers. It was this grudge that led to him learning aspects of Subaru's Tracing ability to stalk Eizan and humiliate him during the Regiment de Cuisine. After Takumi revealed what he'd done to the In-Universe audience, Ibusaki even commented that he didn't seem like the kind of guy to hold a grudge.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: In his introduction, he stepped on Soma's foot to show his confidence and acts like a jerk. Immediately into the first assignment at training camp, he dislikes the idea that Soma could be disqualified. Instead of throwing away the kaki seeds, he holds onto them; when he accidentally crushes the bag, he desperately apologizes for it (though Soma was intending to do so anyway). An extra chapter also reveals Takumi planned to stomp on his foot long before as a challenge.
  • Honor Before Reason: Takumi stated he would hate the idea of Soma getting expelled before they compete officially. This is also the reason why he refuses to accept his Mezzaluna from Soma, wanting to legitimately earn it back in a duel. The following year, it turns out that Soma and Takumi have been competing for it, to the point the mezzaluna kept rotating between them indefinitely, with both refusing to keep it, since they never stop challenging each other.
  • Honorary True Companion: He and Isami become this to the Polaris Dorm after the Fall Classic Preliminary Round, when they attend one of their parties. After Soma's Shokugeki with Eizan, the brothers rush there to check on Soma (although Takumi seemed like he was going to nag at him as usual) and promptly join the party. They also joined the residents to survey on Central's Shokugekis, with Ryoko commenting that they almost feel like residents as well.
  • Hot-Blooded: Played for Laughs, as part of his humor comes from him getting suddenly excited before challenging Soma, only for others to ruin his moment. When he talks to Soma again after the Stagiaire Period, he gets fired up after learning that Soma became an apprentice to Kojirou and The Council berating all of them for being First Years.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Takumi reveals he was already aware that Subaru had been following him around for the past few days. Subverted, though, because Subaru had been following him for much longer than that. After his defeat to Subaru, Takumi realizes that he needs to polish his observation skills to know his customers and his opponents, becoming better at tracing patterns in Eizan's strategy, or even tell that Rindou is actually scared of Central.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In Chapter 153, he was the one who reminded Soma that what they are doing is recon, a few panels later he joins Soma in scolding the Jerkass.
  • Important Haircut: Chapter 201 reveals Takumi's shorter hair after the Stagiaire period is this, due to feeling that he was falling behind in his rivalry with Soma.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: The only physical thing the twins have in common from their Italian heritage. They are innocent whenever he messes up and ends up embarrasing himself or when he gets excited about getting to challenge Soma. On the other hand, he got his Icy Blue Eyes when Subaru insulted Isami.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother:
    • After Subaru spits gum on his Mezzaluna and directly insults Isami to his face, Takumi gets furious and challenges him to a Shokugeki during the Fall Classic. This is why the defeat affects him even harder, because he fails to defend Isami's honor and loses the tool symbolizing their strong bond.
    • When it comes to family, Takumi can be vindictive. Someone (implied to be Subaru) evidently informed him about Eizan's plot to get Soma expelled during the Autumn Elections, using the Aldinis as Unwitting Pawns. Obviously, he was not happy to learn that, and subsequently plotted his revenge on Eizan in turn, even going as far as to stalk him like Subaru does. This leads to the Regiment de Cuisine, where Takumi humiliates Eizan by turning his tactics against him and manipulating him into enhancing his own dish (one inspired by his relationship with Isami) during their match in the third bout.
  • Nerves of Steel: Despite how easily he normally gets embarrassed, before a match he's completely confident while the normally calm Isami runs around flustered. Despite a moment's panic he also recovers easily during his match with Subaru, managing to make a last-minute improvement to his dessert which still isn't enough to let him win. Subaru knew that Takumi would be able to keep his wits about him and improvise something, so he prepared accordingly.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike Isami, Takumi tries to cover this by appearing as the cool and aloof rival (all the opposite of who he is in reality), but even he can't help but let out his good traits. He refuses to get an easy win, apologized to Soma after accidentally crushing the kaki seeds, scolded Soma for letting Megumi carry heavy boxes, is a good big brother to Isami, helped Soma when he needed extra hands, showed sympathy towards Soma having a Shokugeki to defend his home, and, like Soma, isn't afraid to confront bullies.
  • Numerological Motif: 1/2. Which he shared with this brother. Takumi and Isami are both half blood, frequently refered to as one half of a whole. This is also invoked in the way they welcome their guests to their trattoria. Taken to logical extreme during Takumi's match with Eizan in which his winning dish is a "half-moon" pizza.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: BLUE reveals he got his beloved Mezzaluna back from Soma in time for the competition, but never shows us how it happened or when the duel with Soma occured. The immediate aftermath was shown, though; at this point, he's good enough to beat him in a 2-3 judging, and stomp him 4-1 in a bunch of battles we also don't get to see. Sometimes Takumi won and sometimes Soma won.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted only in the anime. A very minor character is given a Named by the Adaptation "Takumi Ishiwatari".
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Unlike Erina, who wants Soma to go away, Takumi isn't satisfied to have Soma expelled until he can defeat him in a Shokugeki. He gets jealous if Soma has another rival, since he considers himself the only one.
  • Power of Friendship: Takumi's alleged "superpower" is coordination where he and Isami become near invincible. This is also the reason he is matched against Don Calma, a Noir who specializes in teamwork. Takumi can also do this with Soma and they beat Don Calma at his own game.
  • Pretty Boy: His good looks have earned him a fan club.
  • Primal Fear: Played for Laughs in Shokugeki no Soma ~à la carte~ and the OVA. Isami knows that Takumi is afraid of heights and uses this to tease him at the Tokyo Skytree by jumping to make him look at the glass floor.
  • Rank Up: After the timeskip, Takumi is revealed to be the Seventh Seat of the new Council of Ten Masters, outranking Eizan and Nene.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives an awesome one to Rentarou, after the guy insulted all the students outside of Central, pointing out that repeating the words "Elite" and "Chosen" only show lack of confidence on his real cooking skills. Judge Ooizumi and Soma were pleasantly surprised by this.
  • The Rival: Self-proclaimed towards Soma. He also proclaims himself to be Soma's "only rival". However, he's not taken as seriously as he would like. He also develops a subtle rivalry towards Subaru after his defeat to him.
  • Sexy Man, Instant Harem: Takumi has his own fan club, which consists of 85 club members who follow him a lot. The Trattoria Aldini booth for the Full Moon Banquet has all the brothers' fangirls as the staff.
  • Sore Loser: He isn't happy when his first challenge against Soma ends up in a tie. After his defeat against Subaru, it took him a week to recover from this, and when he finally did, he promised to earn back his Mezzaluna by properly defeating both him and Soma. Flashbacks reveal that Soma and Takumi fought numerous battles, either ending in a win or loss. The Mezzaluna rotated between them to the point where even Soma gained some expertise in its use.
  • Spaghetti and Gondolas: While he isn't the stereotypical Italian, many elements are attached to him, like his frequent use of Gratuitous Italian, the foodgasms from his food have a lot of Italian motifs (Pavarotti's Aria, harbours, lemon fields) or his popularity with girls. Even his Character Song Single has him naming a lot of Italian dishes.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His Danza Spada during the BLUE. By twirling his Mezzaluna super fast like a baton, he can cut his ingredients with amazing speed and accuracy.
  • Spirited Competitor: The one thing that gets him excited is a chance to compete against Soma, especially if Soma has become stronger.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Both Aldini brothers' names end with "-mi".
  • Those Two Guys: He either is this with his brother Isami, or with Soma, to the point others have started to refer to them as "The Diner Duo".
  • Took a Level in Badass: Two notable examples
    • After losing to Subaru in the Autumn Elections, he undergoes his Stagiare period where he learns a variety of new techniques. When he returns to help Soma at the Moon Banquet Festival, he's easily able to keep pace with him when it took Subaru days to properly trace Soma's moves.
    • During the Regiment De Cuisine Shokugeki, he's paired against Eizan, the one who sicced Subaru on him to begin with. He shows that he's well aware of Eizan's treacherous ways and would try to sabotage his dish, so he deliberately led him on thinking he was going to make one type of dish and ended up using Eizan's dish to make his own superior. In this way, he adopts the same tactics Subaru used to beat him. He easily defeats Eizan, and is the second character after Soma to not be apart of the Council of Ten and defeat one. note
    • During the BLUE competition, he is one of the three light chefs (alongside Soma and Megumi) to clear all three gates and qualify for the final round. He eventually loses to Erina Nakiri.
  • Tsundere: Type A. He has a Hot-Blooded rivalry with Yukihira and goes Large Ham at every instance. Later he cools down and comes to respect Yukihira's skills, while still seeing him as a rival. Mellows down to Type B where he can get along with Yukihira. He becomes quite jealous when Yukihira doesn't pay attention to him.
  • Unknown Rival: Takumi considers himself to be Soma's No. 1 rival and constantly makes boasts and speeches to that effect (which often end up failing and/or making Takumi look silly). Although Soma considers him very skilled and worth challenging, he doesn't seem to be aware of just how seriously Takumi takes the rivalry.
  • We Will Meet Again: Parodied. After the first cooking match between Takumi and Soma ends in a draw, the former declares this after saying they will someday settle things in a Shokugeki. A couple of panels later, they are forced to sit next to each other on the bus.
  • Weapon Twirling: What Takumi's "Superhuman Ability" Danza Spada boils down to. By spinning the Mezzaluna, Takumi becomes a "human food processor", able to uniformly mince ingredients down to 0.1 mm pieces.
  • The Worf Effect: His first appearance showcases himself as Soma's equal in resourcefulness and experience. His loss against Subaru foreshadows the amount of planning Soma would need to overcome the Perfect Tracer.
  • Working-Class Hero: The reason why he feels so motivated to challenge Soma is that he and Isami also hail from a small Trattoria in Italy, and he sees him as a worthy opponent that doesn't have the snobbish attitude from most of the student body.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He tries to set himself up as Soma's rival, knowing the proper style a rival should have and the lines they should give out. Unfortunately, the manga is half comedy and doesn't stick to the shounen cliches he's basing his character on, meaning he ends up more of Butt-Monkey than a rival, though Soma does acknowledge his skill.

    Akira Hayama

Akira Hayama

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Kregg Dailey (English), Juan Cruz Carrega (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akira_hayama_anime.png

Assistant and adopted son of Jun, Akira is a young foreigner she met overseas as a kid, warning her of adultered spices. He specializes in curry dishes, with a wide knowledge of various spices and aromas.

  • The Ace: He has a high level of mastery when it comes to spices, seemingly greater than actual graduates. His sense of smell is also refined enough to make judges consider him a possible rival to Erina's "God's Tongue." However, his abilities don't stop there: He takes all his classes just as seriously, acing subjects that Jun failed as a student and quickly mastering Japanese. She's actually worried that he works too hard. Notably, he hadn't lost a single competition he's participated in prior to his third confrontation with Soma; at worst, he tied with Ryou in their semi-final match at the Autumn Elections.
  • Always Someone Better: The fact that he's lost to him twice really doesn't sit well with Soma until chapter 191 that is.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has a Japanese name and is given flashbacks detailing how he used to live in another country (it's unclear if the market he was nearby was India or Thailand), since he identified Jun as a Japanese tourist. The anime strongly implies his Indian roots by giving him an appropriate Leitmotif. The reason he has a Japanese name however, is because he was an orphan with no name until Jun found him.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In the Distant Finale, he is the only character with a band on his ring finger. His blurb doesn't mention getting married to anyone, but the fact still remains. Then again, the fanbook mentions that he's among the few people with a canonical love interestnote .
  • Ambition Is Evil: His attitude towards cooking is noted to be rather obsessive and Doujima wonders if he might be heading down the wrong path. However, he figures that so long as Ryou and Soma are around he'll probably be okay. When Azami takes over, however, he shows up as the temporary ninth seat of the Council of Ten, having supposedly discarded the Shiomi Seminar in order to advance his cooking. Subverted as it's revealed that he was blackmailed into joining. Despite this, Soma straight up tells Akira how disappointed he is because he gave up the Seminar that easily in exchange of an Council of Ten seat, despite having the skills to fight against Central like the others did.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: How he acquired Council of Ten status. He defeated every other student in a Battle Royale for the spot, including most of the upperclassmen.
  • Badass Boast: He declares to Hisako that he is going to dethrone Erina from her seat. After beating her, Akira once again reaffirms his intention to be The Ace of Totsuki, telling her that her insistence on being Erina's Number Two became her undoing. That first boast would be proven true when he takes the 9th seat, making him officially outrank Erina as a first year.
  • Badass Bookworm: Not only does he ace every cooking subject, he also aces every non-cooking one, including geography, history, contemporary literature and math.
  • Badass in Distress: For most of the Regiment de Cuisine Arc, he is in cage with the expelled rebels. His expulsion is later revoked and is given the 4th Seat of the Council of Ten.
  • Badass Minds Think Alike: Soma and Akira make curry dishes for the Autumn Election preliminary using an aroma surprise factor. Also he, like Soma, aims for the top of the Council of Ten by using every last resource they have. In addition during their rematch during the exams they both opt to go for fried dishes in what is described as "an all or nothing attack"
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Even though Jun is a genius, she's still The Ditz and Akira is the mature one of the duo who takes care of her duties like attending guests, shopping, watering the plants or putting her Techno Babble into practical use. He even carries her to the couch when she sleeps on the floor in the middle of research.
  • Blood Knight: When he feels challenged, such as during the semi-finals against Ryou, he becomes fiercely competitive, losing his "kingly dignity" and adopting a serious Psychotic Smirk.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Awkwardly quotes Soma's "Happy to Serve!" during the mid-term test after putting a smug student in his place by serving him the Council of Ten's Deluxe Yakisoba.
  • Bound and Gagged: The first shot of Chapter 90. Turns out he trained by being subjected to this (except he was blindfolded instead of gagged). Jun then gets that he was tied up so he wouldn't be able to recognize the spices by touching them.
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • He usually scolds Jun whenever she is not behaving correctly or any random moments, such as calling her a "spice idiot" for having terrible grades in everything except cooking classes and completely failing to take care of any of her responsibilities on her own.
    • After he told Alice that she had to think more of the customers than whatever expensive experimental project she wanted to do, Ryou suggested that he needed to humor her whims. He refused outright, pointing out that their stand was doomed to failure if she didn't take it seriously. With Hayama scolding her, she actually does get serious for once.
  • Character Tics: Touches his nose with his index finger and is constantly holding and smelling spices like cinnamon.
  • Child Prodigy: At age 10, not long after being adopted, he quickly learned Japanese, being capable of having casual conversations. By the time he enrolled to Totsuki, he aced all the subjects, while also taking care of all his and Jun's chores without failing.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Discussed, then inverted. The combination of spices and their smells are the focal point of all his dishes, without exception. Following his tie in the semi-finals of the Autumn Election, Akira is called out as a "one-trick pony" by Ryo. Akira does not take this well. He then proceeds to refine his talents further though, rather than branch out. As a result, when he wins in the finals, it's because "the face of the chef" was most apparent in his dish. In other words, his unique mastery of a single skill made him stand out more against his more well-rounded opponents.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Seems to finally let go of his haughty attitude toward Soma after losing to him in their third confrontation. This also makes him appreciate Alice and Ryou as well.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may have been part of Central, but he will defeat Soma fairly with his own talents without needing any assistance from Azami through unfair advantage via electronic nose and best authorities of molecular gastronomy assisting him.
  • Evil Costume Switch: When Soma and the others see Akira again and learn that he has joined central, he no longer ties his hair and is wearing a Badass Longcoat and the Central badge. After he joins Alice and the other rebels, he ties his hair, showing that he's part of the group again.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He leaves the Shiomi Seminar, and joins Central, with clear intent to get rid of Soma and his allies. It's later revealed that he was blackmailed by Azami into joining.
  • Fatal Flaw: While Dojima gave hints of this during the Autumn Election, they finally come to play during the Promotion Exams. Azami takes advantage of his devotion towards Jun to manipulate him into joining Central, knowing that his need to protect her work would make him accept Central without even asking her. And also his distrust of others outside the seminar isolated himself from asking help to Soma or the others before taking Central as the only option.
  • First-Name Basis: He calls Jun by her first name, despite the latter's protests.
  • Foil:
    • To Jun — Both are experts in spices, but where the latter is naive, ditzy, easily angered, dependent and is content with theoretical knowledge, he is mature, reliable, cool-headed and has a more hands-on approach to spices.
    • To Ryou — Both were rescued from bad environments when they were children by women associated to Totsuki. While Ryou is more aggressive and wants to win because of his competitive nature, Akira is motivated by his loyalty to Jun.
    • To Soma — Soma's father tries to impart a lesson about the Power of Love as the secret to improving Soma's cooking to no avail, while Akira is already explicitly motivated by his loyalty and implied affection for Jun. By the time of the Promotion Exams, Akira is a lone wolf who refuses to get help from anyone except for Jun's (which greatly tampers with his game the moment he distances from her), while Soma is constantly improving because he always develops his cooking with and for his friends.
  • Forced into Evil: Despite his arrogant and cold demeanor towards Soma, he isn't happy at all to be part of the Council of Ten because he got there by being blackmailed with Jun's research in Azami's hands.
  • Friendly Rivalry: After winning the Autumn Election, he and Soma start getting along pretty well. Both he and Ryou often come over to his place so the three can compete in cooking, much to Akira's annoyance. However, that small friendship had likely been spoiled with Akira's defection to Central. Only this is Soma we're talking about: Soma immediately promises to ask Fumio to let them stay in the dorm (too bad Central expels anyone who loses to mere "Rebel"). In their second year, he develops this dynamic with Ryou and Alice, since the three are constantly dueling and rotating seats in the Council.
  • The Gift: He has an extraordinary sense of smell, which people think might give him potential close to that of Erina. With just this, he has a mastery of spices apparently superior to the actual Totsuki alumni and already has the same level of ability to pick out the best ingredients as Ryou, who has been working with seafood since he was a child.
  • Happily Adopted: Jun rescued him from the streets, gave him a home in Japan and the head of the Hayama Seminar gave him his new name and became his godfather. In exchange for all this, Akira is determined to be the very best for her. For her part, she's worried that he pushes himself too hard.
  • Hot Teacher: After the time skip, he becomes a teacher at Tootsuki. His lectures are the most popular among the students.
  • I Owe You My Life: Akira feels that he owes everything to Jun, since she gave him a home, a real family and a new purpose in life.
  • I Work Alone: He is rarely seen with anyone of his age, since he spends much of his time working by himself at the Shiomi Seminar. After the Autumn Election, he unwillingly has Soma and Ryou frequent his (and Jun's) house, constantly trying to shoo them away or reminding them that they lost to him. It gets worse when Alice (and Ryou) forces herself into his own Full Moon Banquet stand, and his objections are overridden by Jun, who's excited at the prospect of him finally having friends of his age. This ties into his loss to Soma during the "Revenge match". Akira went at it completely alone, not even having Jun around to ask for advice and ideas. Soma, on the other hand, was able to gain the help of Kuga's subordinates, as well as a professional hunter to help gather rare ingredients.
  • Insufferable Genius: Frequently boasts about how awesome his nose is and how great he is at cooking. It's a way of putting pressure on himself, but it's also pretty annoying, especially to Ryou.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Azami shut down the Shiomi Seminar, Akira decided to join Central rather than the Rebels, figuring that was his only way to protect Jun.
  • Leitmotif: In the anime, Akira always has Hindi-style music when presenting his dishes.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: He ties his hair in a ponytail whenever he's about to cook.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has white hair that reaches his shoulders. He untied his hair when verbally challenging Soma once the Autumn Election was announced.
  • Meaningful Name: Since he didn't have a name before being adopted, Jun and the head of the Hayama Seminar gave him the name "Akira", which means "Gift", because they saw his smell sense as a gift for the culinary world.
  • Momma's Boy: Everything Akira does is for the sake of his adoptive mother, Jun.
  • Never Given a Name: The reason Akira Hayama has a Japanese name despite being from an unknown South Asian nation is that he was a nameless orphan before being adopted by Jun in his late childhood.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: His tie is loose and he wears his regular white t-shirt under the school uniform.
  • The Nose Knows: His nose is very sharp when it comes to spices. He can identify ingredients and the grade of cooking by the first smell. This ability equals that of the God Tongue possessed by Erina. In the Promotion Exams Arc, he made his own spices for bear meat without using any of the state-of-the-art electronic nose technology and best authorities on molecular gastronomy provided by Azami to crush Soma in minutes.
  • Not So Stoic: Even though he keeps relatively calm and cool most of the time, one passing student could note his Tranquil Fury aura, and also after he was declared winner of the Autumn Election the audience was quick to note that his spontaneous hug to Jun came out of nowhere.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: He managed to beat several 3rd-year Central members in a battle royale to claim one of the empty Council of Ten seats.
  • Only Sane Man: To both Alice and Ryou during the Full Moon Banquet, due to the former putting their Shiomi Seminar stall in the red with her capriciousness and the latter passively going along with her ideas. On the morning of the fourth day he warns Alice that either she gives up overdoing the dishes or they won't recover their debts (and risk getting themselves and Ryou expelled).
  • Out of Focus: He's been mysteriously absent ever since Azami Nakiri took over as the new director. This is jarring considering one of Azami's reforms made it so that all seminar groups, including Jun's, would be shut down which is an event you'd expect him to have a prominent role in. But with his turn to Central revealed, that might explain his lack of participation in the Survivor's Hunt.
  • Rank Up: He becomes the 9th Seat of the Council of Ten Masters after being blackmailed by Azami into joining Central. His position is revoked after he lost to Soma and is subsequently expelled. After the Regiment De Cuisine however, he rejoins, this time as the 4th Seat.
  • Refusal of the Call: Hayama was nominated for the BLUE competition but he rejected it. He disdained WGO's belief in "superpowers" and he was also aware he stood no chance against Soma's resilient energy. Averted in the Anime, since he and the rest of the Council were busy with a side mission.
  • The Rival: During the Autumn Election arc, he has been built up as one of Soma's major rivals, even surpassing Soma and Ryou in the preliminaries. Come to the finals, he's developed an even more fierce rivalry towards Ryou.
  • Rival Turned Evil: He shows up in the exams as one of the provisional Council of Ten, having apparently discarded the Shiomi seminar in pursuit of his ambition. While it's revealed that he didn't choose Central by free choice, Soma accuses him of not fighting to protect the seminar from the beginning.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: He's much more down-to-earth than the childishly excitable Jun. He falls into this role again after being paired with the energetic Alice (with Ryou remaining neutral).
  • Second Place Is for Losers: Chides Hisako for being content with being Erina's second, meaning she'll never truly strive to reach the peak of her ability. He also uses this as an insult to both Soma and Ryou whenever he wants to provoke them. Ironically gets it thrown back at him during his re-match with Soma when he's told that he lost sight of what he was cooking for and let his previous victory stifle his talent, whereas Soma constantly keeps looking for ways to improve his cooking.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: His white hair and dark skin tone clearly define his non-Japanese (presumably Indian) heritage. He's also a prodigy chef with a nearly superhuman sense of smell.
  • Straight Man: To Jun, since he is more focused and down to earth compared to her. During the Full Moon Banquet, he also has to curb Alice's capriciousness, especially after she ended up plunging their booth into debt.
  • Street Smart: He knows from an early age how the spice market works and how the store owners scam tourists with low-grade spices.
  • Talented, but Trained: Hayama used his marvelous sense of smell to do nothing more than piss off spice vendors in his youth, and only came into his own as a culinary powerhouse after receiving extensive training and education at Totsuki. Even knowing that his talent and training place him a cut above nearly every cook in the world, he nonetheless refuses to stop developing his skills.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Has dark skin and his chef uniform is black. Also, add his mysterious aura and fierce competitive streak. When referring to him, a lady at the fish market described him as "The dark-skinned handsome guy".
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He wasn't thrilled when Alice and Ryou took over his stall at the Full Moon Banquet and kept bickering with her about who was really in charge.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He was already amazing but during the Central Eliminations, he curb-stomped third-years with seeming ease, and Dojima talks about him as if he was a whole new man. Then after the Regiment de Cuisune, he earns the 4th seat of the Council of Ten, which is five whole ranks up from when he was with Central.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After his defeat against Soma and his Heel Realization, Akira realizes that he didn't value Soma and the others as real friends and also that he took Jun for granted at some point. By the time he reunites again with the rebels, he still feels bad for betraying them. Post time skip, he can be seen hanging out with Ryou and Alice and has a way of looking rather dorky.
  • Tranquil Fury: While Soma calls him out for trying to appear cool after tying up in the semi-finals and Ryou calls him a one-trick pony for depending only on spices, a bystander perceives all his bottled up anger as he walks through the hallway.
  • Undying Loyalty: When Natsume offers him a high-paying position in her company, he declines, declaring his loyalty to no one but Jun.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Even though Jun is his adoptive mother, she is aware that Akira is taking care of her instead and feels like she's not giving him enough. Akira disagrees and, while he scolds her for only focusing on her studies and her occasionally childish behavior, he appreciates that she changed his life.
  • When He Smiles: He cannot help but give a gentle grin after seeing Alice taking the Full Moon Banquet seriously (and coming up with a compromise that incorporates both their ideas for the Shiomi Seminar stall), in the process fixing the financial damage she inadvertently caused to the booth for its first few days.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • He gets this from Soma when the latter called him out for not considering fighting for Jun and instead opted to jump into Central's wagon. Given that Akira had currently the best ranking among all of them, and both Soma and Ryou defeated Central in their own fields, Soma's anger at him is understandable.
    • Jun likewise gives him one figuring that even if Azami had gave his word, he wouldn't be trustworthy enough to keep it.
  • Worthy Opponent: Like many talented students at Tōtsuki, Hayama respects Soma for his Determinator attitude. Hayama calls him the undisputed leader of the 92nd Generation and decides to forgo his participation at BLUE because he didn't stand a chance against Soma.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He acted as any reasonable person would in real life when Azami blackmails him to join Central under threat of Shiomi Seminar closing down. He didn't realize he was in a Shonen series where fighting for your goals will always work eventually, which proves to be his undoing when Soma defeats him and chastises him for being a 'coward' and Jun agrees with Soma regarding his assessment. His Heel–Face Turn is also motivated by the realization.

    Ryou Kurokiba

Ryou Kurokiba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryo_kurokiba_anime.png

Alice's laid-back assistant, the scraggily-looking Ryou follows her everywhere and does what she asks. On occasion, Ryou becomes an entirely different person when he wears his bandana. His speciality is seafood cooking.

  • Animal Motifs: Any kind of feral animal, such as a dog or a tiger, due to his aggressive nature. The dog image is more frequent, as when Alice meets him, she immediately requests her mom to take him in, making both Leonora and Ryou see the situation as Alice wanting to adopt a stray puppy.
  • Art Shift: During the Autumn Election, his impressive physique was shown as he worked out. Yet, in any other scene where he's shirtless, he's just as scrawny as most of his fellow first-years.
  • Badass in Distress: He spends most of his time during the Régiment de Cuisine in a cage along with the other rebels taken out by Central's Council of Ten during the Promotion Exams.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: His personality changes radically once he puts the bandana on, giving him a fierce look and aggressive character.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Ryou is shown to be more reasonable and mature than Alice, but he still goes along with every whim of hers, even when it transpired that he's a much better cook than his employer.
  • Berserk Button: It turns out that it was him who challenged Rentarou to a Shokugeki, not Alice, because Rentarou insulted them by calling them "Small-Fry cooks". It was enough to make him flip into "Berserk Mode" in a blink.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: When he was a kid, he was really bratty and disrespected even adults.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: According to Erina, he only did a passable effort at classes, which was why she was surprised by his performance in the Autumn Election.
  • Character Development: He starts off as an arrogant child-chef consumed with power, but is humbled by Alice, choosing to lower himself to her aide to develop himself as a chef. He retains his lust for power and arrogance, but is again humbled by Akira, which causes him to reevaluate his cooking style and incorporate more dimensions to his dishes aside from just overwhelming flavor.
  • Child Prodigy: He was a chef even as a kid, and he commanded the adult sous chefs what they have to do. In his own words, the owner gave the whole responsibility to him.
  • Color Motifs: His colors are black and red. His hair and cooking uniform are black, while his eyes and bandana are red. His personality is neutral on regular basis, and changes into fiery and aggressive the second he puts his bandana on. Also his last name starts with "Kuro", the kanji for "Black".
  • The Comically Serious: Whenever he is with Alice and without his bandana, he tends to clarify details to her and take her whining with a neutral face.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: He has black marks under his eyes (might be eyebags) in contrast to his red eyes.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Downplayed. He's no moron by any means but he normally isn't brilliant either. When his name was first listed among the Autumn Election candidates, almost nobody knew who he was. Even Erina is surprised because, while she does know him, it was as the quiet outlier with above-average but hardly stellar grades. As the tournament went on, however, he proved himself a force to be reckoned with — he was the very first candidate to score very high marks on the preliminaries in many years (and on the ridiculously tough Block A, even), crushed Megumi in the quarterfinals, and performs on an even keel with eventual winner Akira and co-runner-up Soma.
  • Defeat Means Respect: In flashbacks, it's revealed that Ryou didn't have any respect towards Alice when they met, calling her a Spoiled Brat to her face. After many defeats against her, Ryou started to treat Alice as "milady" (Alice-ojou) and agreed to be her assistant.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appeared at the opening ceremonies and training camp, but isn't formally introduced until the Autumn Election.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep":
    • Like Hisako's case, until the Autumn Election, Ryou was simply "Alice's assistant" and had No Name Given.
    • He himself also only bothers to call those he considers Worthy Opponents, such as Soma and Megumi, by name. Others are just "Girl", "Spice Boy", etc.
  • Extreme Doormat: Without his bandana, Ryou simply lets Alice do as she pleases, for better or worse. This is exemplified during the Full Moon Banquet, where he went along with Alice, even as she is plunging Akira's stall into the red with her capriciousness, to the point that he tells Akira, who was scolding her for her immaturity, to simply flatter her.
  • Face of a Thug: Invoked by Alice. She wants him to be her scary muscle so that she can look more intimidating to other students.
  • Foil
    • While Megumi focuses on heart and hospitality to soothe her guests, Ryou uses an overwhelming style based on sheer impact to incite a craving for more. He scoffs at her weak style, saying she'll never reach true mastery like that. The difference lies in their upbringing: Megumi was raised in a warm, supportive environment surrounded by people who wanted what was best for her while Ryou grew up in a harsh seaside town among sailors with cooks who would have loved nothing more than to drive him out into the streets.
    • Both he and Soma come from humble restaurants for the masses, but where Soma lives in a friendly neighborhood where he is free to learn from mistakes, Ryou came from a restaurant with a Social Darwinist tinge; also, both have a habit of wearing pieces of cloth whenever they get serious. While Soma's headband is tied on his left arm, Ryou's headband is tied on his right arm.
    • Ryou's black color motif visually clashes with Alice's white, and their respective personalities of aloof but fierce, and friendly but childish are constantly juxtaposed.
    • Also with Akira. Both were rescued from bad environments when they were children by women associated to Totsuki. While Ryou is more aggressive and wants to win because of his competitive nature, Akira is motivated by his loyalty to Jun.
    • To Hisako. Both are assistants to the Nakiri cousins and follow all their orders, but while Ryou is motivated by his competitive drive and keeps surpassing Alice, Hisako follows Erina to be close with her, but without trying to surpass her, with their relation eventually changing to equals in the friendship.
    • Most recently to Rentarou. Both are Hot-Blooded and aggressive, but Rentarou is normally loud and goes into an almost meditative trance when cooking, which is completely opposite to Kurokiba. Rentarou considers himself a leader, Kurokiba seems content to be Alice's aide. Where Kurokiba is loyal and quiet, Rentarou is opportunistic and smug.
  • Freudian Excuse: A flashback shows the cooks in his restaurant used to bully him, to the point he had to toughen up.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Even though he was so adamant to defeat them in the Autumn Election, Ryou is seen to be hanging out with both Soma and Akira, and is seemingly getting along with them just fine.
  • Game Face: Whenever he puts on his bandana, he gains a Slasher Smile and an incredibly fierce expression.
  • Guyliner: A frequent offender, Ryou is rarely seen with unpainted eyes.
  • Had to Be Sharp: The restaurant he worked in as a child had a strict survival-of-the-fittest environment where "useless" chefs are immediately laid off, driving Ryou to rise up the ranks of so merciless a kitchen.
  • Hot-Blooded: Even when talking to a judge he is rude and menacing, even to the point of screaming at Taki to eat his food and yelling at Sonoka to already decide for the winner of the match.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: On one hand, he essentially acts as Alice's butler and valet; on the other hand he is also implied to be better at cooking than Alice, after he lectures her following her loss to Soma in the first round of the Autumn Election alone.
  • Hypocrite: He accuses Akira of being a One-Trick Pony who only relies on his spices to win, yet he himself only relies on stacking up powerful flavors to beat his opponents into submission. When Rentarou calls him out on his one-dimensional way to cook in their Shokugeki, Ryou reveals the new-found depth in his dishes.
  • Irony: He lost to Hayama's knowledge of spice in the Autumn Elections. He ends up in a curry restaurant during his Stagiaire period and learns more about them as a result. It's also the reason he was able to win against Rentarou in their Shokugeki.
  • I Work Alone: He firmly believes every chef is on their own, as it's a constant competition of "eat or be eaten".
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Twice. First time when Alice was requesting him like a puppy, and the second time when Akira complains that Jun should serve him and Soma the cheap snacks instead of his good cookies.
  • Improbable Age: Alice and Ryou met when they were 6 years old, when he was the head chef of the bar he worked at.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Aggressive and confrontational as he is to the judges in the Autumn Election semifinals (in particular the submissive Sonoka), he’s right. It’s their duty to make the decision for a match and failure to do so makes their position worthless. Gin steps in with a solution that puts the problem off by declaring a tie between him and Akira, but the same thing happens in the finals.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Whenever he puts on his bandana, he turns from culinary doormat to berserker.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: Ryou treats Alice as "milady" and does many chores for her.
  • Mood-Swinger: By default, Ryou's mellow and The Stoic, until he puts on a bandana, of any type of headwear, as the Beach Episode reveals, and turns "feral".
  • Mysterious Past: It's never explained how a Japanese child ended up in a Danish port town in the first place.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: He wears no tie, has a black t-shirt under the uniform, and his bandanna is tied around his right wrist.
  • Rank Up: After the Regiment de Cuisune, he joins the Council of Ten as the 5th seated member. Apparently this trope is in effect a lot, because it's implied that Hayama, Alice, and Ryou are continually challenging each other.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: This is accentuated in the anime. After Alice first tries to intimidate Soma (with no success), Soma notices Ryou behind her, who is glaring at him with his red eyes. Worth noticing that their eye contact lasted longer than his first impression of Alice.
  • The Rival: Initially to Alice, also being her assistant. After the Autumn Election he becomes this to both Soma and Akira, at the same time also developing a Vitriolic Best Buds dynamic with them.
  • Savage Wolves: He is compared by Yuuki to a nasty and feral canine after his Autumn Election match with Megumi, and he certainly likes baring his "fangs" when in beat-them-into-submission bandanna-mode.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Without his bandana, he's the savvy guy to Alice.
  • Sidekick: To Alice; also fills the role of a personal butler. He slices fruit for her (she complains to him for not shaping them like bunnies), carries her bags and keeps an eye on her stuff while she goes to the pool. Near the end of the series, he and Hisako are seen dressed up in uniforms while serving the Nakiris during a family reunion.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: His cooking attire, revealing his muscular arms.
  • Sore Loser: After Akira wins the Autumn Election, he gets enraged to the point he yelled at Alice for scolding him and, along with Soma, demanded a plate of Hayama's carpaccio to compare. While both of them kept saying they could have done better, their bickering went along like the three of them became Vitriolic Best Buds.
  • Split-Personality Switch Trigger: Ryou switches between his stoic, laid-back regular personality and the rude, Hot-Blooded personality he has when he's cooking when he puts on his bandanna.
  • Straight Man: Next to Alice. Even though he goes along with everything she wants (to the point that he stood by while Alice inadvertently put Akira's reputation in danger), he is not far from pointing out whenever Alice is being childish. After Alice takes the initiative to take Erina away from the mansion, Ryou is the only one who questions what to do next.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is imposing, stern, mysterious, and very good looking.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • When Alice defeated the president of the Edge-Cutting Research Society and insisted to keep their expensive equipment in a corner even though she had even better machines, Ryou grabbed him by the collar with a serious-menacing face and apologized to him for Alice's spoiled attitude. The senior even lampshades this by pointing out that his actions don't match his body language.
    • After tying with Akira in the semifinals, Ryou was furious, but quickly mellowed out once Alice removed his bandana. However, Ryou (while still calm) requested a cooking contest with Alice to vent out his frustration.
    • He also sports this against Rentarou for his Jerk-ass attitude.
  • Worf Effect: To demonstrate how Central is not pulling punches, he's unceremoniously swept under the rug during the Promotion Exams, being defeated and expelled along with most of the other rebels. This is despite being around equal ground with Soma and Akira, and winning one of the first major victories against Central by taking down Rentarou.
  • Worthy Opponent: Implied to have feelings of this sort towards Megumi after she demonstrates surprising skill and tenacity in her match with him.

    Alice Nakiri

Alice Nakiri

Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (Japanese), Christina Kelly (English), Mariana De Iraola (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alice_nakiri_anime.png

Erina's half-Danish cousin, Alice is a first-year high school student at Totsuki, with her specialty being able to create very elaborate dishes, both beautiful and complex, using molecular gastronomy techniques.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: When Alice and Ryou were in middle school, she challenged the Cutting Edge RS in exchange of their room, just because she wanted the space for herself. Right before the Survivors Hunt, she was informed that the Shokugeki not only gave her the room and the equipment, but also the leadership of the club. She immediately used this as an excuse to partake in.
  • Achilles' Heel: Despite being one of the best cooks of the 92nd Generation, she gets so wrapped up in strange techniques and impact that she can easily lose track of what she's supposed to be doing. When tasked to create a bento in the Autumn Election quarterfinals, she technically fulfilled the criteria of the assignment, but failed to realize the point was to create a bento. What she made was simply sushi in a box that would stay cold for six hours, not the novel experience that Soma produced by simply starting with the basics and then improving from there on.
  • Always Second Best: She's never been able to beat Erina at cooking, something she wants to change. She has yet to manage it, so she taunts Erina about her lacking social skills instead.
  • Angry Cheek Puff: She has the habit of puffing her cheeks when upset, befitting her being an immature Spoiled Brat.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite her "rivalry" with Erina, upon hearing that Azami came back and tried to close her off, Alice wasted no time spiriting her out of the Nakiri mansion with Ryou and Hisako's help. Later on, at the end of the first day of Central's survivor purge, she outright tells Azami in front of all of Venue D that she hates him for what he did to Erina, and that she won't let him have his way with her cousin or Totsuki. A note at the end of the chapter then states that despite their rivalry, Alice loves Erina very much.
  • Break the Haughty: She had a very superior attitude from the beginning towards anyone, until Soma defeated her in the first round of the Autumn Election, to the point she started to cry like a little child in the middle of the stage and later getting lectures from both Erina and Ryou.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's half-Danish by way of her mother Leonora.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a well-endowed figure, which triggers Yuuki's A-Cup Angst when Alice and Irina bathe with her, leading Yuuki to wonder if buxom figures run are a Nakiri family gene (and proven to be true since Alices mother is similarly busty). Notably when Alice and Irina do go to the pool, guys do seem to get attracted to them because of their breasts.
  • Character Development: Is slowly but surely getting there. She starts off thinking that her molecular gastronomy alone will be enough to make food taste amazing, never focusing on what customers would enjoy most in terms of taste and experience, which is a big part of why she loses to Soma in the Bento challenge. Come the Full Moon Festival, she still seems to think this way, putting herself plus Akira and Ryou in danger of expulsion, until a stern talking to from Akira makes her compromise. By the final day, she helps the guys with their dish of curry by adding a garnish of an elaborate chocolate sculpture, allowing her to use her molecular gastronomy to still add a touch of whimsy to the dish, but this time she's genuinely focusing on making sure that her customers enjoy the flavors and experience rather than just to show off. By the Promotion Exams, she becomes the emotional support of the rebels, being the one who takes the situation the best way.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In Chapter 64, Alice beat the captain of the Cutting-Edge Cooking RS in order to take his club's equipment and room. At the time, she didn't realize that the Shokugeki also gave her leadership of the RS. This RS is also targeted during the Survivor Purge, though Alice probably would have opposed Azami regardless of running the club.
  • Child Prodigy: Alice already received awards in molecular gastronomy in Denmark when she was nine, with 42 patents to her name by the time she was ten.
  • Clashing Cousins: She often butts heads with her cousin Erina, usually being the instigator by playing mean pranks on her.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed, but she can be seen pouting at the attention Ryou gets from the first-year girls.
  • Coy, Girlish Flirt Pose: She does one right before the judges try her curry dish, crowning the servings by mentioning "how much love she put into doing it".
  • Crazy-Prepared: During the Autumn Election preliminaries, she brought a gas mask in case there was a huge stench, like Nao's foul-smelling dish.
  • Defeat Means Respect:
    • Alice stopped treating Ryou like a pet when he finally won against her; after two years of continually beating him at cooking no less.
    • Also happens after she is defeated by Soma. Months after that event, Alice comes to respect him for his skills.
  • Didn't Think This Through: While she is quick to take charge, Alice frequently neglects to think her schemes through, with Ryou often needing to ask what she intends to do next.
  • Epiphany Therapy: After Akira scolds her for her capriciousness putting their (and Ryou's) school tenures at risk, Alice decides to take the Full Moon Banquet seriously. Come the final day, she and Akira make a compromise with curry rice and 3D-printed food, having realized that the latter has a point.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After their first year of high school, she starts letting her hair grow. By the time she is 25, her hair is already waist-length, while Erina cuts her hair shorter.
  • Failed Dramatic Exit: She first introduces herself to Soma by suddenly popping up in front of his cooking table out of nowhere, exchanging a few words with him, and then haughtily turning on her heel and walking away in confident fashion... only to crash right into Ryou.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her hair is short and has a longer sidetail on her left. By the second year she's grown her hair, and the sidetail is even longer.
  • Foil: Three examples.
    • To Erina — while both are arrogant and haughty, Alice is a bit more social than her cousin, if only because she learned them from TV. Due to their different upbringings, Alice also tends to be a lot more emotional and childish, while Erina rarely shows herself as anything but in control.
    • To Ryou — Aside from their clear appearance contrast of white (Alice) and black (Ryou), Alice is shown to be playful and childish, while Ryou to be aloof and low energy, or fierce and violent. In addition, Ryou's cooking is very straight-forward, maximizing flavor through traditional or even primitive means of preparation, meanwhile Alice relies on her superior technology to bring out flavor. However, they both share a proud sense of superiority and passion for victory.
    • To Soma — she is a firm believer in culinary science, in contrast to Soma who prefers to experiment and is not afraid to be in the wrong.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her arrogance and drive to win stems from her long-seated desire to surpass Erina, as she always stood above her since they were children.
  • Friendly Rivalry: In contrast to her relationship with Erina, there's little tension or hostility with Soma during their Autumn Election match, and while there's some condescension from her throughout the match, after she loses to Soma their relationships returns to friendlier banter.
  • Full-Name Basis: On the receiving end. With the exception of Erina, Senzaemon and Ryou, almost everyone refers to her as "Nakiri Alice".
  • The Gadfly: She's not nearly as aloof as Erina, but almost as arrogant in her own way. For Alice, though, that just means she endlessly teases people.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Erina was mean to her when they were growing up and she still looks down on Alice, preferring to stand as the superior chef. In exchange, Alice teases Erina where she knows her cousin is less experienced — social life and behaving like a normal teenager.
  • The Heart: Despite being sometimes selfish and childish, Alice does care for others, to the point her cheerful attitude helps others. She managed to pull Erina out of her Heroic BSoD by showing her how much they love each other, and keeping the expelled rebels together before the Regimental Battle, while also welcoming back Akira without a second thought.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • To face-off against Central, Alice challenged them in the name of the Cutting-Edge RS so she could use her new title of "Captain Alice", but later she admitted to Soma and Takumi that she also wanted to do something against her uncle and help Erina.
    • She's also a skilled industrial welder, as shown during her sophomore graduation exam. It's notable as one of the few manual labours Ryo isn't doing for her.
  • Hypocritical Humor: During their Autumn Election match, she complains to Soma that staring at her while cooking is very rude, only for Soma to remind her that she did just that when they met at training camp. Then after she loses and Soma makes a comment about getting closer to his goal, she takes it as a taunt to her and completely chides him for it — she who's done nothing but exactly that since they've first met. She won't even take others' comments with grace, seen with her interactions with Erina and Ryou afterwards.
  • I Never Got Any Letters: She complains to Erina that she never got any correspondence from her during her time in Denmark, which is justified as it is revealed that Azami deliberately blocked off their communication.
  • I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: This is how she got Ryou Kurokiba to be her assistant. After discovering him at the sailors pub, Alice took her mother with her and requested that they "adopt him" to be her assistant (Ryou is not amused since it looks like she is dealing with a stray puppy). Ryou only accepts to go with her after two years of cooking duels.
  • Insufferable Genius: Alice will make sure everyone knows she is the best student (after Erina).
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Alice declares she made all her research about love and teases Erina for not knowing about it when her knowledge comes from watching rom-coms, yet she falls asleep in the middle of them.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: After Akira reminds her that the Full Moon Banquet was meant for customers, not themselves, Alice decides to take the event seriously and comes up with a compromise dish incorporating Akira's curry rice and her 3D printed chocolate. It worked so well she managed to almost single-handedly reverse their debts into a profit.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She is introduced as another arrogant school princess like Erina with her tendency to look down on others, a provocative attitude and her willingness to shut down a school club so she can take their room and equipment, the latter which she didn't even need. However, she's much more social than her Ice Queen cousin, rather goofy and is willing to cook her dishes for people that ask.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: Ryou Kurokiba is her assistant. He helps her with whatever tasks she has in mind, and addresses her as "Lady Alice" but they are more even in terms of skills and experience than is standard for this trope.
  • Ms. Fanservice: In a bonus chapter, where she visits a local swimming pool with Erina and quite proudly showed off her figure by wearing a skimpy bikini. Happens again during the beach exams.
  • Never My Fault: She refuses to accept the fact that her capriciousness plunged her, Akira and Ryou's Shiomi Seminar stall into last-place among the 60 main street stalls for the first day of the Full Moon Banquet, instead shifting the blame on the former (simply for trying to rectify her screwups). It doesn't help that the latter is passively going along with her. Once Akira calls her out on this, however, Alice finally accepts her responsibility and manages to find a way to fix the situation.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: No thanks to her meddling, what was supposed to be a no-brainer for Akira throughout the Full Moon Banquet turned into an academic life-or-death struggle after her on-a-whim improvisations and last-minute changes plunged the Shiomi Seminar stall into a financial deficit.
  • No Badass to His Valet: After losing to Soma, Ryou chides her about being too weak.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She wears a tie instead of the girls' bow, and a cream sweater instead of the blue jacket.
  • Ojou: Ryou treats her as "Milady Alice", she is accustomed to getting everything she wants (from expensive machines to the room of a Research Society Club) and sees going to a public pool like "an adventure". She is also perplexed from seeing "educational cheap candy" for the first time.
  • Only Sane Man: Alice is relatively the most normal member of the Nakiri family. Unlike Erina who had to deal with Abusive Parents and the issues of the God Tongue.
  • Odd Friendship: She surprisingly forms a close friendship with Akira, after their experience with the Festival Booth. Their personalities are complete opposites, but Akira's maturity balances out Alice enthusiasm.
  • Practical Taunt: Approached Ikumi and Hisako in the middle of the contest to tease them.
  • Rank Up: After the Regiment de Cuisune, she joins the Council of Ten as the 6th seated member. She keeps rotating between seats 4, 5 and 6 with Ryou and Akira.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has a unique eye design, and her red eyes along with her white skin and silver hair look really intimidating.
  • Rich Bitch: Downplayed. She's proud, egoistical and frequently looks down on conventional cooking methods, but she's generally quite friendly and is not as stubborn as Erina is.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense:
    • She herself realizes this and considers it a disadvantage as a chef, which is why she drags Erina to a public pool to better understand common people's life.
    • For the Full Moon Banquet, she insisted Erina to have a revised version of the all the culinary guides so they can feature her name in Akira's Shiomi Seminar stall, insisting that she could cover the cost of the reprint. Then, after she ended up ruining the stall's finances, she planned to make another of her special curry dishes, charging 2 Pine Tickets per serving (roughly ¥20,000 or ~$200). Akira quickly rejected the idea, as they were in the main street area, where each serving couldn't surpass ¥500 (~$5). She didn't even see anything wrong with her plan until the latter reminded her that their stall is an actual business, not a vanity project.
    • In the OVA, she and Ryou intend to visit Erina, planning to go to the Polar Star dormitory on limousine. When Ryou points out that it’s the less discrete vehicle they can take if they want to keep Erina hidden, Alice then proposes to use a shorter limousine.
  • The Rival: To Erina since childhood, and to Soma as of the Autumn Election.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Her expulsion (along with Hisako's) hits Erina hard enough for her to join Soma's idea of grabbing the majority of seats of the Council of Ten.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Ryou (when he's not wearing his bandana). She's clearly the more outgoing, emotional and childish of the two.
  • Saw It in a Movie Once: Twice. The first time when she teased Erina about her lack of experience in love, while she herself made a lot of investigation, which involved romantic comedy movies she didn't even finish watching. And the other is when she helped Erina escape the Nakiri mansion, suggesting that they can be runaway teenagers like the ones she saw on a TV Documentary, which Hisako bluntly rejects.
  • Sexy Scandinavian: Like her mother, she's a half-Dane who's very appealing to the eyes.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Alice makes comical chibi-faces when she teases people, shows her cluelessness/adorkability or starts to pout. Her mother makes the same faces. And just like her cousin, Alice has a tendency to be petty and childish, made all the more noticeable by her interactions with her usually deadpan assistant Ryou.
  • Sibling Rivalry: She is consistently trying to defeat her cousin Erina and establish herself as the best freshman in Totsuki.
  • Sore Loser: Subverted. After Soma defeats her, she is clearly upset and proceeds to cry and throw a tantrum, but she still thanks him for the match and keeps the Friendly Rivalry with him.
  • Spoiled Brat: As Ryou admits, Alice is very stubborn and will get what she wants no matter what, often pouting and whining whenever she gets upset (like Ryou "ruining her taunting atmosphere" or why he didn't slice her apples like bunnies). She even started throwing a tantrum after losing to Soma, then cried about it to her mother over the phone for nine hours straight. She starts toning down this trait after Akira gives her a reality check during the Moon Festival.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Alice looks like a younger version of her mother.
  • Team Primadonna:
    • Once Alice decided to have a booth for the Moon Banquet Festival, she managed to convince Jun to sign her and Ryou up and takes over the Shiomi Seminar stall, much to Akira's annoyance. Instead of thinking of the customers and the event itself, her only motivation was to compete directly against Soma and Erina.
    • After discovering that she actually earned the leadership of the Cutting-Edge RS, she got so delighted by this that she wanted everyone to call her "Captain Alice".
  • The Tease: Most of her interactions with other characters involve gloating or using seductive tones to get a reaction. In a flashback, Alice also did this when she first met Ryou, treating him like a petnote .
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Even if she gets one of the highest scores, she will lecture her opponent about how their efforts weren't enough. Downplayed when Soma isn't the type of person to get frustrated from gloating.
  • Valley Girl: Her speech patterns in the Viz volume translations are peppered with like" and "totally".
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: During her trip to the public pool with Erina, Alice tricks her into admitting she's got someone she likes for her to record. Erina angrily tells her to put the recorder away, so she tucks it into her cleavage.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Alice and Erina butt heads frequently, but they actually do get along, as Alice visits her frequently and tries to get her out to have lunch or hang out.
  • We Can Rule Together: In a flashback, Alice offers Ryou companionship in exchange for helping him complete his training while on a trip in northern Europe.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Alice firmly believes in this trope, and thinks that Soma is trying to invoke Heart Is an Awesome Power to defeat her in their Autumn Election match. She's wrong, though, because she actually failed to realize the point of the assignment. While both of their dishes were excellent, only one of them bothered to do more than technically meet the criteria of the match.
  • The Worf Effect: To demonstrate how Central is not pulling punches, she's soundly defeated off-screen by the current Council of Ten during the Hokkaido Exam finals and expelled from the academy. This is despite being built up as future member of the Council of Ten for her skills, .

    Hisako Arato

Hisako Arato

Voiced by: Saori Onishi (Japanese), Brittney Karbowski (English), Ailén Campos Hee (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hisako_arato_anime.png

Erina's secretary and close friend, Hisako specializes in medicinal-based dishes.

  • Always Second Best: She wants to stay as Erina's Number Two and will crush any who dare oppose her — a fact not lost on Akira, who, after defeating her, chides her for being content with where she is.
  • Beta Bitch: Played with at the start of the story. She's the assistant of the local Academic Alpha Bitch, always ready to carry out her commands, and it's clear that Erina's haughtiness has rubbed off on her. As the story progresses, we see that she isn't really a mean person and her friendship with Erina is genuine on both sides, even if Hisako doesn't view herself as an equal to her.
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: Blood is all over her face and clothes after she cold-heartedly beheads a living turtle. It's not that much blood, but it still fits the trope and makes her look badass.
  • Break the Haughty: She's so confident in her skills and her place in Erina's inner circle that, when she lost to Akira at the Autumn Election quarterfinals, she was so heartbroken she distanced herself from Erina out of shame. Ironically, it took being paired with Soma — Erina's walking Berserk Button — for her to even start recovering.
  • The Bus Came Back: She reappears as Soma's partner in the first Stagiaire week after she lost to Akira in the Autumn Election. Her experience working with Soma has helped her recover from her loss, and with Soma giving her not only useful words of advice, but the full set of Erina's favorite shoujo manga, Hisako now had both the courage and incentive to return to Erina not just as an assistant, but as a friend, for which she is grateful.
  • Celibate Hero: She shows no romantic attraction to any guys, and only has pure devotion to Erina, both as her assistant and best friend. When Isshiki reveals to them that he is a Naked Apron streaker, she is more horrified at half-naked Isshiki and focused on protecting Erina's eyes.
  • Character Development: She was introduced as nothing more than Erina's overprotective assistant with little personality beyond her subservience to Erina. However, after Hisako is defeated in the Fall Classic, its shown that Hisako and Erina are legitimately best friends, despite Hisako treating Erina as her superior. Once Hisako reappears during her Stagiaire week with Soma, Hisako realized that she needs to step up not only as a student-chef, but as Erina's closest friend. She genuinely grew to like Soma instead of holding grudges based on Erina's own issues with him, to the point Erina herself is shocked that Hisako talks friendly to him around her instead of overreacting at him like she usually did. After this point, Hisako becomes friendlier to the other students and her relationship with Erina evolves from a sycophantic one to a more equal-terms friendship.
  • Childhood Friends: Played with. She's been with Erina since childhood, but was too much in awe of Erina to really be her friend. Soma later encourages her to be more a friend than a sidekick and cheers her up after her loss to Akira.
  • Death Glare: Played for Laughs. She occasionally exchanges them with Ryou, her Spear Counterpart.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Initially cold and hostile towards Soma due to his flippant attitude around Erina, she eventually mellows out to him after their Stagiaire assignment, having not only seen him show some skills she doesn't have, but also advised to not give up on her relationship with Erina following her loss to Akira, for which she warmly thanks him. The next time they meet, she confuses Erina by giving him a friendly greeting.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Hishoko" (literally, "secretary girl"), given to her by Alice, used as a Running Gag by the author before a Canon Name was established. To her annoyance, the nickname spread throughout the student body. When Soma casually greets her this way, she flips out; luckily for her, unlike with Nikumi, Soma agrees not to call her it.
  • Epiphany Therapy: For her Stagiaire assignment, she and Soma had to work for a restaurant located next to a bullet train station. Realizing that her experience with staged situations in cooking classes pale before the realities of a working restaurant, which require more flexibility, she is forced to swallow her pride and learn from Soma, who actually grew in such an environment. The whole experience, coupled with Soma's words of advice, helped her recover from her loss to Akira and see herself as more than just Erina's sidekick, for which she is incredibly grateful to Soma.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Until the Autumn Election, Hisako was simply "Erina's secretary" and had No Name Given.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In her second year of highschool, she cuts her hair in a shorter bob, and in her third year, she has longer hair tied in a ponytail. She returns to her usual shoulder lenght bob in her adulthood
  • Family Business: For generations, the Aratos served as personal medics to the Nakiris. To be able to serve Erina as well, Hisako oriented her family knowledge of medicinal herbs into her cooking.
  • Fangirl: She practically worships Erina, at times almost looking like she's outright crushing on her. She's also quite jealous and overprotective of Erina (she makes a weapon search on Alice before she can even talk to her own cousin), including an aggressive attitude towards Soma without ever having spoken to him thanks to how casually he speaks to her boss.
  • Foil:
    • To Megumi — both are overshadowed by a friend in skill (Soma and Erina, respectively) and mild-mannered. Their cooking styles are also similar, with one focused on soothing mental and physical aspects, while the other uses medicinal properties from herbal ingredients. But where Megumi is sweet and loving, Hisako has some of Erina' haughtiness rubbed onto her.
    • To Akira — both specialize in herbs and spices, and are very loyal to their "masters", but where Akira is inspired by Jun to push himself beyond his limits, Hisako is content with being Erina's Number Two.
    • To Ryou — Both are assistants to the Nakiri cousins and follow all their orders, but while Ryou is motivated by his competitive drive and keeps surpassing Alice, Hisako follows Erina to be close with her, but without trying to surpass her, with their relation eventually changing to equals in the friendship.
  • Girl Friday: Through the lens of a cooking manga, meaning she cooks instead of fights. She's Erina's secretary and helps arrange all her affairs, provide emotional support and complete menial tasks like picking up Erina's manga. Her experience proves helpful during her Stagiaire shift with Soma, when she helps organize the reservation system at an overly busy restaurant, giving it a modern update to allow younger customers easier access.
  • Healing Herb: Her family has practiced traditional medicine for generations and she incorporates it into her cooking.
  • Hero-Worshipper: When she and Erina were little, Erina wanted to be her friend, but Hisako was too respectful and decided to support her from behind. After she loses to Akira, she feels unworthy to be by Erina's side until Soma convinces her to see herself as more than just a sidekick.
  • Heroic BSoD: According to Alice, when they met after the Full Moon Banquet she was despondent following Azami firing her as Erina's secretary. And yet again after she gets expelled from Totsuki.
  • Honorary True Companion: She becomes this to the Polaris Dorms when they had to defend their home from Eizan's gang, since Erina is hiding there. She also joins the victory party and joins them to check Central's Shokugekis.
  • Humble Pie: She has two separate incidents that make up a single part of her character arc from Erina's sidekick to her friend.
    • Firmly convinced that she was second only to Erina, she didn't work as hard as she could have in the Autumn Election and lost to Hayama, who chided her for being content with second place. The next time she's in focus, she's clearly miserable because Erina's perfectionist attitude has rubbed off on her, causing her to consider herself worthless. Erina doesn't actually care if Hisako is perfect because the only one she won't accept failures from is herself, but the fundamental gap in how they view their relationship causes Hisako to separate herself from Erina out of a sense of inadequacy.
    • After this, she gets an assignment with Soma during Stagiaire week when they have to help a restaurant and then leave some kind of clear improvement in it before the end of the week. He warns her about the demands of actually working in a real restaurant, but she dismisses him by saying she's had enough experience at the school with staged situations. However, it's clear that she's in way over head in such a busy restaurant, forcing her to swallow her bitter comments towards him and actually start learning. He uses the opportunity to prod her into returning to Erina, pointing out that if she failed once she just needs to try again in a different way. Notably, while this experience was humiliating for her at first, she's actually very grateful for what Soma did for her.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Non-Romantic example. After both her Character Devlopment and everything the Polar Star residents have done for Erina, Hisako can only trust Megumi to keep Erina company, to the point she only lets Megumi clean Erina's back at the public baths, something she doesn't even allow Alice, Erina's cousin.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Erina is highly dependent on her. When Hisako goes into self imposed exile Erina grows increasingly frustrated, lonely and moody in general. Later, Azami strips her of her role as Erina's secretary in order to get rid of the few people around her that she can depend on. Erina's face makes it only too clear how much of a blow this was.
  • Meaningful Echo: During Stagiaire week, she passionately tells the owner of Mitamura that if the situation has changed, they need to change their approach and emphasize what's important to them without worrying about appearances. In the next chapter, Soma tells her to stop worrying about losing to Akira and go back to Erina, repeating her own words right back at her.
  • The Medic: She comes from a line of specialists in Chinese medicine, incorporating her knowledge into her cooking; during the Autumn Election preliminaries, her dish "breaks Nao's curse", so to speak, on the judges.
  • Medicinal Cuisine: Arato was born into a family of experts on traditional Chinese medicine. She incorporates this knowledge into her cooking, such a special curry spice blend that can turn even the wimpiest men into buff action movie stars.
  • Morality Pet: It is through her friendship with Erina that the audience first sees Erina's warmer and softer side.
  • Ninja: After Erina runs away from home, she dresses up in a ninja outfit to deliver her some clothes and other stuff she might need at the Polaris dormitory.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She wears a tie instead of the girls' bow.
  • Not So Above It All: She has a reputation for being serious, so the Polaris Dorm is quite surprised to see that she's surprisingly silly at times, including cosplaying when she's trying to be stealthy.
  • Number Two: She is the secretary to Erina. This results in her defeat against Akira, since she lacked the ambition to be the very best, just wanting to live in Erina's shadow.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Like Erina, she ends Chapter 131 with a look of shock on her face when she discovers that Azami has barged into his daughter's Full Moon Banquet stall.
    • Has it again in Chapter 135 when Azami thanks her for all her hard work "until today".
  • Only Friend: She's the closest thing Erina has to an actual friend, but even she mostly just hero worships Erina and wants to serve her. Erina isn't quite happy about that, but, until Soma told her otherwise, Hisako doesn't find herself worthy to be anything more than Erina's secretary.
  • Pride: Just like Erina, Hisako is as elitist and perfectionist as her, also looking down on Soma based on social status and academic records alone.
  • Punny Name: Her real name isn't too different from her nickname, Hishoko ("secretary girl").
  • Put on a Bus: After Akira defeats her at the Autumn Election, Hisako gave to Erina a letter stating she was "leaving on a journey", since she can't face Erina because of her failure, without listening to what Erina had to say.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: All her interactions with Erina can be seen like this, as Hisako gets excited with the prospect of tasting her cooking or worships everything Erina does. On the other hand, Erina enjoys Hisako's company as she is the only friend she has whom she can be her dorky self. Their actual relationship towards one another is a bit more complicated and isn't really this trope at all: Hisako pre-Stagiaire hero-worshipped Erina and was a little afraid of her at the same time, which put a limit on how close they actually got to one another. Post-Stagiaire, Hisako now actively seeks to become a true friend of Erina, though Erina perceives Hisako's newly formed friendship with Soma to be stronger than her own friendship with her (and makes Erina jealous of him, in part because she does recognize Hisako as one of her only real friends).
  • The Reliable One: No notice at all is given to it but, like Erina and Soma, Hisako also finished the training camp's 50-serving challenge well ahead of the pack. No bath for her though, because Erina had her run an errand down to the front desk.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Her expulsion (along with Alice's) hits Erina hard enough for her to join Soma's idea of grabbing the majority of seats of the Council of Ten.
  • Satellite Character: She's not lacking in development, but her entire character is focused around Erina and their relationship. She even adopts Erina's viewpoints as her own, though she does warm up to Soma before her boss does.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Despite not being one of them, she helps the Polaris tenants defend the dorm (and Erina, who was hiding there at the time) against Eizan's lackeys while Soma is challenging him to a Shokugeki.
  • Squee: Her reaction at the end of Chapter 133 after Soma comes in to fill the remaining table at Erina's Full Moon Banquet stall. Also when Soma wins against Eizan, she gives this kind of reaction, making Erina wonder about her.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Towards Soma after their week together at the Stagiaire Period, even to the point of telling Erina to thank him for the mangas he got for her, which shocks Erina. Also she allowed Soma to request feedback from Erina, who is actually confused on why she didn't shoo Soma away like she would usually do with anyone. The vast improvement of their relationship naturally never went unnoticed by Erina, much to her envy.
  • Undying Loyalty: Very loyal to Erina, since it's also tradition in her family, as the Arato line are personal doctors of the Nakiri's.
  • Well-Trained, but Inexperienced: During Stagiaire Week, Hisako Arato gets paired up with Soma at the restaurant they're both interning at. Hisako, at this point, is a haughty but pretty cook, and doesn't think much of Soma despite him having proven that he's likewise a formidable cook. However, the restaurant they work in deals in lunch rushes and Soma questions Hisako if she's ready for it, which she responds to by saying she has experience in staged situations at Totsuki. But come time to face the real deal, she is completely overwhelmed as it's nothing like she expected. Soma, on the other hand, breezes through it as working in a special-of-the-day diner has long given him the skills necessary to keep up with the demands of the incoming patrons. Hisako has to swallow her pride and follow his lead in order to keep up, and by the end, she's humbled by the experience.

    Ikumi Mito

Ikumi Mito

Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami (Japanese), Rachel Landon (English), Sol Nieto (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ikumi_mito_anime.png

A freshman tasked by Erina with ridding of the Donmono Research Society (Don RS) Club to make room for another cooking lab, but is challenged and defeated by their guest chef Soma to a Shokugeki, with the match conditions forcing her to join said club. Ikumi's specialty is meat, but she slowly shifts her cooking into donburi (rice bowl) dishes and how meat complements other ingredients.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Her name implies she's Japanese, but dark skin and blonde hair is natural (rather than the deliberate style), so it's not entirely clear. Muddying the waters is her American Flag Bikini which may imply some form of descent from there given that it's a common complexion in the USA, but she's never stated to have any sort of American origins.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Originally, Ikumi used expensive grade-A5 wagyu beefnote . Her first idea to use A5 meat for a local karaage business is discarded automatically because it costs too much for a middle-class shopping district. After some advice from Soma, she starts to learn how to use the whole dish as a unit, no matter what kind of meat she is using.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Although she technically isn't an assistant in Don RS, Ikumi is far more skilled than Kanachi, who is the president (and the only other member left) of the club.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't call her "Nikumi" (or "meat meat"), unless you happen to be Soma.
    • Never put sauce on wagyu beef, as Daigo found out in a painful way.
  • Be Yourself: Throughout the series, she has difficulty acting honestly, always falling back on the prideful, aggressive persona she's spent years developing under the pressure of being heir to a powerful family. After her shokugeki with Soma, she begins acting more independently and with more kindness, no longer forcing herself to meet the expectations of her peers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: With only one hour left before the rankings were announced, she, along with Takumi and Isami, arrived to aid Soma's booth.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Ikumi is certainly confident in her assets, and is constantly wearing clothing that reveals her cleavage.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Her busty figure is under constant emphasis due to every outfit she wears being cleavage-heavy.Her chest gets a large amount of Male Gaze shots and absurd jiggle physics. Flat-chested Kurase feels extremely envious of her figure, especially since she sees Ikumi as a love rival.
  • Character Development: Originally an arrogant student-cook employed by Erina, after a humbling Shokugeki and being forced to join the same club she was tasked to destroy, Ikumi starts to realize her own desire for approval by simply being herself, turning her talents into donburi.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Her entry for the Autumn Election was Dongpo Pork Curry Don, based on Chinese spices and Sichuan pepper. This would later help Soma and Megumi prepare their hujiao bing buns for the Moon Banquet Festival against Terunori's stall.
  • Cool Big Sis: The new members of the Don RS certainly look up to her.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: She loses the match against Soma because the only thing she bothers to focus on in cooking is meat. While the rest of her dish is still plenty delicious, the dish as a whole isn't really balanced right, causing the flavors to conflict. The judges don't eat all of it as a result, leaving Soma the clear winner before the results are even announced. She has since remedied it come the Autumn Election preliminaries, as the judges who heard of her reputation beforehand were surprised at how better-balanced her dish has become.
  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: She wears her shirt unbuttoned, revealing different bikini tops, and her tie is on her right leg. It's surprising to others when she shows up wearing her uniform properly.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: By Soma, simultaneously developing a crush on him. By extension, she also befriends his dorm mates and the Aldini twins.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts to mellow out towards Soma, and integrates well into the Don RS as well as the circle of friends from the Polaris Dorm.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Knocks Daigo out because he dipped a piece of wagyuu beef on sauce and called her "Nikumi".
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Nikumi", where "niku" means "meat" in Japanese. The only one allowed to call her that is Soma.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Her charms have attracted quite a number of people into joining the Don RS. In Chapter 122, we see a couple of other girls being a part of her admirers.
  • The Face: She eventually becomes this for the Don RS, as Kanachi noted that many students started to sign up for the club after Ikumi became more charismatic. Kanachi himself noted that she is the "next don of bowl club".
  • Fangirl:
    • She respected and admired Erina since the two were children, and she saw with how much dignity the latter dealt with the pressure of being the heir of a prominent family (something Ikumi herself struggled with). This admiration reaches a level where it's almost indistinguishable from an outright crush, complete with blushing, stuttering, stealing glances, observing her from afar while commenting on how cool she is, and at one point running away in embarrassment after she revealed her feelings to Erina.
    • Same with her one-sided crush on Sōma. She keeps cheering him in all of his challenges along with the Polar Star members.
  • Flag Bikini: One of her common bikini top features the American flag for some reason.
  • Foil: Clearly contrasted Mayumi — both have unrequited crushes on Soma, but while Ikumi is more imposing, voluptuous and aggressive, Mayumi is shy, petite, humble and quiet.
  • Freudian Excuse: On her ninth birthday, her mother gave her a teddy bear as a gift. Unfortunately, her father destroyed it, telling his wife to never give their daughter another gift like that, and advising Ikumi to let go of any weaknesses to become worthy of the family business. This explains her appearance and attitude. This also explains her crush on Soma. Since her father prohibited her from showing her soft side, Soma was the first person ever to say openly that she was "cute" in a positive way, just as she felt for the first time that she could be herself when trying his donburi.
  • Graceful Loser: Implied. After being forced against her will to join the Don RS, she serves don in several friendly competitions and does it well, indicating that she takes her membership in the Don RS seriously in spite of being forced into it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After losing against Soma and being ditched by Erina, Ikumi becomes a valuable ally, member of the Don RS and a part of Soma's circle of friends.
  • Hidden Depths: Her attitude is bold and aggressive, but it's hinted that she would like to be more feminine. However, her father raised her to avoid associating with anything that could be considered weak.
  • Honorary True Companion: She becomes this to the Polaris Dorm after her Shokugeki with Soma. Since she got her one-sided crush on him, she still gets along well with the girls and attended to their Fall Classic Celebration party. After the Tournament, she frequented the dorms regularly to have cooking practices with them.
  • Hopeless Suitor: A Running Gag in the series has Ikumi trying to do something nice for Soma, only for Soma to not notice her obvious crush on him, something else gets in the way (Ikumi finds out Soma didn't join the Don RS, leaving her with Kanachi; or when she found out that she wasn't going to be alone with him, as Mayumi was also there), or others teasing her about it.
  • Hot-Blooded: She gets angered easily by anyone but Soma calling her "Nikumi", having Kanachi being his melodramatic self or Alice taunting her.
  • Humble Pie: She was Erina's henchwoman who liked to bully the clubs the Nakiri princess was going to close. Not only did she lose the shokugeki against Soma, but he defeated her A5 wagyu dish with a cheap steak from the market, which made the judges finish their bowls while hers was barely touched. After the defeat, Erina ditched her and she had to join the Don RS.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a long strand of hair standing on the top of her head, and has several faux-paw when meat isn't involved (and sometimes when it is).
  • The Lad-ette: Has Boyish Short Hair, physically strong, Hot-Blooded, intimidating, loves meat, and can beat guys up. She easily knocks out Daigo.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She has a noticeably large bust and is not shy about showing it. Plus, she is almost always seen in Stripperific clothing, even while wearing her school uniform. All her outfits (school uniform, cooking attire, casual clothes, etc.) expose her midriff. She has worn the school uniform properly exactly once, after her shokugeki against Soma. Lampshaded in a bonus, where Soma asks her why she cooks in bikini when hot oil can reach her, to which Ikumi replies "a Chef mustn't be afraid of the kitchen".
  • No Dress Code: She never gets into trouble for walking around the academy while exhibiting her cleavage, midriff, and legs.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She wears the shirt unbuttoned, tied above the navel and showing off her bikini top. In her right leg she wears a Knife Thigh Holster and knee-high brown boots. The only time she wears the uniform correctly is when she joins the Donburi RS, in hopes to impress Soma.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Her two Shokugeki victories in the story (excluding the one against Soma) all happen offscreen. First the one against Nao Sadatsuka for the last spot in the Main Area of the Full Moon Banquet, and then her victory against Mea Yanai in representation of the Don RS.
  • Ojou: Judging from appearance and personality, one wouldn't see this, but the Mito family founded its business by distributing and selling meat across Japan. A flashback reveals Ikumi lives in a Big Fancy House and wore an elegant dress when she was a child.
  • Oral Fixation: Has to the tendency to lick her lips. It's justified since her lips are the most sensitive part of her body in terms of rating meat temperature and taste.
  • Punny Name: "Mito" is a pun on the English word "meat". Her nickname "Nikumi" contains the Japanese word "niku" for "meat". Doubles up as a Meaningful Name as she is best known for creating meat dishes.
  • Red Baron: She is the "Meat Master" or "Meat General".
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: At one point, she offers a poor shopping district an amazing deal on A5 beef. It’s still far, far out of their realistic price range, but when Soma politely declines she gets puzzled at him apparently holding back out of politeness.
  • Starter Villain: The first opponent who requires extensive planning from Soma to defeat rather than his usual improvisation.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the Tomboy to Mayumi's Girly Girl. Mayumi is intimidated by her presence and is aware of their differences: Ikumi wears shorts and loves working with meat, while Mayumi wears dresses and skirts, and is good at more tranquil activities like graphic design and housekeeping tasks.
  • Tsundere: Ikumi denies being attracted to Soma, and will often yell how she doesn't care about the Don RS, even though she's embracing the donburi style. When Mayumi asked her what it was like to be at Totsuki, Ikumi proceeded to describe Kanachi as an irritating loser (without mentioning him specifically), but added that Soma is not that bad.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: While she is very skilled when it comes to meat, she lacks skill when using it with other ingredients. She also relies on high-grade and expensive meat. Her initial character development is about evolving past this through the donburi style.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: She almost always wears a bikini top and mini-shorts.

Takumi's younger twin brother, Isami always stands alongside his brother to make Italian cuisine, with the same skill set learned from Trattoria Aldini.

  • Acrofatic: When chubby, despite his large size, Isami is very quick at cleaning and cutting the ingredients, let alone synchronizing his movements perfectly with Takumi.
  • Adrenaline Make Over: More accurately, "Under Pressure Slim Down".
  • Always Someone Better: Isami sees his brother Takumi as the one to beat since they learned to cook. He learned to accept the fact, but he still hopes to surpass him someday. It's also inverted since in most other things not related to cooking Isami is better than Takumi.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While it's stated that he and Hisako have the skills to be Council members, it's only implied in the second chapter of Le Dessert that he gets a place in the Council in his third year since he is seen in the comitee of the Autumn Elections instead of watching it from the crowd.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: When they're not in the kitchen, Isami enjoys teasing Takumi by reminding him to not cry or how he is more mature than him. He also openly laughs at Takumi whenever his boasts fail.
Isami: [pointing to Takumi, who is babbling alone] You can just ignore him when he starts talking nonsense like that.
Yuuki: [thinking] That's family for you... He doesn't go easy on him.
  • Big Beautiful Man: As seen from Takumi's fan club, a part of it is also gushing over how adorable Isami is as well.
  • Big Little Brother: Not only he is One Head Taller than Takumi, he also acts like the more down-to-earth of the twins whenever they're interacting with others.
  • Big Brother Worship: Downplayed. Isami doesn't hold back when it comes to mock Takumi by calling him "lame". However, he does look up to him as a chef. As the series progresses, Isami trains to be stronger so he can support Takumi.
  • Big Damn Heroes: With only one hour left before the rankings were announced, he, along with Takumi and Ikumi, arrived to aid Soma's booth.
  • But Not Too Foreign: The Aldini twins are half Japanese, but grew up in Italy. They've used the unique upbringing to make more flexible dishes such as using Japanese ingredients in an Italian style or vice versa.
  • Chick Magnet: He, like his brother, is also popular with the girls, as a good part of Takumi's fanclub is also attracted to him, regardless if he is in his chubby mode or not.
  • Culture Clash: A minor one, as he is confused about Japanese custom of "cheering fans with names". Otherwise, according to Shokugeki no Soma ~à la carte~, he is very fascinated by Japan's culture, as he also considers the Maid Cafes as such.
  • Distressed Dude: Don Calma's men kidnapped him before Takumi's match so he won't have Isami as partner. However, Isami is far from worried, since he knows there's another person capable of teaming up with his brother. Cue Soma.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Mostly when he's chubby. Less often when he loses weight.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: The only physical resemblance he has with Takumi are the skin tone and their light blue eyes.
  • Gentle Giant: Unlike his Challenge Seeker brother, Isami is always calm and polite to everyone despite his chubby and intimidating looks.
  • The Gadfly: He knows exactly what to say to get Takumi flustered for his own amusement.
  • Honorary True Companion: He and Takumi become this to the Polaris Dorm after the Fall Classic Preliminary Round, when they attend one of their parties.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: The only physical thing the twins have in common from their Italian heritage. He has Innocent Blue Eyes when he is looking at Takumi with affection.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: His eyes are very intimidating when he gets serious.
  • Japanese Tourist: Subverted in Shokugeki no Soma ~à la carte~, since he is half-Japanese-Italian. On their holidays, he drags Takumi to Tokyo Skytree (while Takumi kept complaining about the 70-minute line) and a Maid Cafe (where Takumi labels him as an Otaku, which Isami just denies).
  • Messy Hair: In contrast to his blonde twin, Isami's hair is dark brown and spiky.
  • Moment Killer: Usually for his brother. Whenever Takumi wants to pose as the aloof rival, Isami goes ahead and starts being friendly to Soma, to Takumi's embarrassment.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike Takumi, Isami doesn't try to appear cool and intimidating, and instead is ready to help anyone, even his brother's declared rival. When Takumi was trying to provoke Soma when the Breakfast Buffet Trial was announced, Isami nicely started to answer Soma's question about Italian breakfasts before Takumi told him to stop. Also during the Moon Banquet Festival preparations, he quickly helped Megumi with her boxes and during the 4th day he offered his help with the noodles before Takumi could finish his boast.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: In his second year he starts using a headband and the school's grey sweater vest.
  • Oblivious to Love: Justified, since he is accustomed to all girls looking at Takumi instead of him, as in Shokugeki no Soma ~à la carte~ he also thinks that his Childhood Friend Bianca does. She tells Takumi that she didn't confess to Isami because "He is too dense".
  • Sacrificial Lamb: His defeat and expulsion in the Promotion Exams gives Takumi more personal motivation to get a seat in the Council of Ten.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Although Takumi is the better chef, Isami expresses his desire to surpass his brother.
  • Sibling Team: During their second year, Isami and Takumi have been challenged to a lot of Team Battles, even against graduated students. The Noirs kidnap him in an attempt to cripple Takumi’s chances at the BLUE Tournament. However, Isami eventually gets to run the family restaurant with Takumi and established some pop-up restaurants in Japan with him.
  • Straight Man: He is this whenever Takumi ends up embarrassing himself with his Hot-Headed persona.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Only during the summer. During his second year, he stays slim even during spring.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: He slims down during summer due to fatigue from the heat, then regains weight around autumn and winter. In their second year, since he and Takumi have been challenged to team Shokugekis, Takumi notes how Isami has slimmed down even during spring because of the constant hard battles.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Both Aldini brothers' names end with "-mi".
  • Took a Level in Badass: According to Erina, both he and Hisako are strong candidates in line for a seat in the Council.
  • Troll: Implied. In an extra, he invites two of Takumi's fangirls to exchange lunch with them, knowing very well that they cook better than the girls. He is smiling widely while the girls got depressed over this.

    Subaru Mimasaka

Subaru Mimasaka

Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese), Rob Mungle (English), Jonatán Florit Rozas (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/subaru_mimasaka_anime.png

A burly freshman, Etsuya Eizan's protege, and Soma's Autumn Election semifinals opponent. Despite his looks, he's smarter than he appears and has a strong sense for details. He has no "specialty", but copies the other chefs he faces.

  • Animal Motif: Aside from his devil motif, during his match with Soma, he has a snake motif.
  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: Any dish you can cook, he can cook better: his Shokugeki strategy is to study his opponents to learn their recipe, then add his own improvement to it.
  • Achilles in His Tent: After the promotion exams, Subaru is not seen in the spotlight anymore, since he vowed to stop using his perfect trace until he finds his own original style, even to the point he rejects a rightfully earned place in the Council. In the anime, he skips the mini-tournament for the three competing spots at BLUE. Later he returns to support the Council and their battle with the Noir cooks.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: One of his key strengths, despite having no specialty of his own, he can creates dishes that have surpassed chefs at their own specialties solely through analyzing their abilities and creating a dish one step ahead of theirs.
  • Badass Biker: The second time he appears, he's driving a motorbike. And he really loves it.
  • Batman Gambit: How he defeats his opponents. He knows what they would do in any situation and he develops countermeasures against them.
  • Battle Trophy: He always bets on Shokugekis the opponent's precious tool, mostly to hurt the loser way beyond the defeat.
  • Blood Knight: He loves intense cooking duels and is only interested in winning, that's why he challenges so many students he faces into Shokugeki.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: With the Full Moon Banquet drawing to a close, Soma hired him as an extra hand for his booth, since he was not only the only student-chef without a booth, but he also has the skill to perfectly mimic Soma's mapo tofu dish. He was also chosen to join the rebel team during the Exam Battle.
  • Collector of the Strange: He collects data of the rivals (even the most worthless details) and their tools as Battle Trophy.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In Eizan's words, though he certainly has the skill for cooking, he has no respect for ingredients or tools and only cares about winning. To do so he spies on his opponents, figures out what they plan on making as well as gathering information of their styles of cooking, copy his opponents dishes to perfection and then making improvements to it until his dish is one step ahead of his opponents in every category whilst simultaneously making sure to take into account any other variables based on his information on his opponents skill and abilities to ensure he will remain ahead of them even if they try to improvise something. On top of that, during the match itself, he will also give Breaking Speeches on how utterly predictable they are and how pathetic it is for them to lose against their own specialties to put even more pressure on them. When one of the judges tries to call him out on his dirty strategies, he counters by stating that his particular style of cooking IS analyzing his opponents to ensure the greatest chance of success.
  • Cool Bike: He has an impressive-looking bike. But how he protects his bike is more impressive.
  • Crazy-Prepared: His motto is "Right down to a gnat's eyebrow", a phrase which means "going into the most minute of details". Not only he puts a high standard of security for his motorbike (breaks, chains, raincoat and GPS tracking in case of robbery), he knows a lot of details about other cooks, even if some of the details are random or casual. Seriously, who needs to know Soma's shoe size, how many pair of shoes has or what kind of pattern Takumi's underwear has?
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: After losing to Soma, he later becomes an ally to be called upon when needed, proving especially helpful due to his copying abiltiies.
  • Delinquent Hair: He has a mohawk of dreadlocks.
  • Determinator: After getting eliminated in the Regiment de Cuisine, Subaru traces Eizan, Momo, and Soumei in order to prepare Aldini, Megumi, and Soma for the next round, despite how consecutive traces consume almost all of his stamina.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: At the end of the Autumn Election preliminaries, he appears out of nowhere and steals the fourth spot of Block A from Shun and Zenji.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He's so used to studying opponents that Soma constantly improving his dish all through the night and up to their duel blindsides him completely, since he was so sure Soma would cook a certain dish beforehand and simply improvise the rest and just rushed ahead in making it.
  • Dreadlock Rasta: He's a huge biker with a dreadlock mohawk.
  • Ditto Fighter: Due to his analyzing and extensive stalking, he is able to copy dishes AND make them better. This works to his advantage in team battles as well, because he can perfectly mimic his teammate's dishes and therefore can add on to them without cramping their style.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. Only Soma seems to be on good terms with him. The others still can't get over him being a creepy stalker and Takumi still cannot forgive him for what he did to his Mezzaluna. This gradually fades over the course of the Full Moon Banquet arc, however, and by the Central arc he's more-or-less become an Honorary True Companion, even joining the Rebel team during the Regiment de Cuisine.
  • Evil Gloating: People say that in one Shokugeki, he laughed loudly as he took away a knife which was a memento of his opponent's late mother. Right before he's awarded the win, he gloats how he knew Takumi would try to one up in his dessert.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When he lost against Soma, his dreads untied, letting his long hair flow (and causing some disgusted reactions from the girls in the audience), as a sign that he has given up his dishonest motivations. By the time of the Red Leaf Hunt, Subaru is still wearing his hair loose. By the third year, he shaved his hair.
  • The Faceless: The first time he appears, his face wasn't shown and his name wasn't revealed. His second appearance reveals finally his face and his name.
  • Fan Disservice: He is prone to this:
    • One of the judges gets disturbed when his dessert made them picture Mimasaka as a Yamato Nadeshiko.
    • After Soma wins against Subaru and gives him a plate of his stew, his dreads get loose and his hair starts to flow while he sparkles, much to the disgust of the female judges.
    • While doing his "Image training" of the Council of Ten we're treated to him copying the mannerisms of each of the Original members of the Council of Ten. The images he provides are a perfect reason to perform a Brain Bleach.
  • Fatal Flaw: Same as being a Combat Pragmatist which even Soma notices. He's good at duplication and observation, but is so obsessed with just winning he's practically just wasting his talent and thus doesn't bother trying to take his creations further then just slightly outshining the competition. Sure enough, this leads to his downfall as he only studied what Soma was planning on making, not considering the possibility that he may continue to improve his dish right before and during the time he started to cook during the competition.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's a gracious host and not averse to having casual chat with future opponents. However, before and during a match he mocks, belittles and sets out to destroy someone by beating them with the exact thing they chose to make. Further, he makes people bet items precious to them in Shokugekis and then simply stockpiles his rewards.
  • Foil: His copying of opponents seems to provide a dark mirror to Soma's experimenting and learning.
  • Freudian Excuse: He has a distant father who continually denied his cooking skills because they lack originality. After he defeated his father in a cooking contest by modifying his father's special recipe, the latter sent him away to Totsuki rather than giving him the praise he wanted (or, in his own words, his father ran away on him). He was then taken in by Eizan, who encouraged him to be the Blood Knight we know.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's very tall and muscular, but his knowledge of details is crazy. One of his greatest strength is predicting the moves of his opponents.
  • Gonk: Especially next to most of the male cast by comparison, it's accentuated by his Overly-Long Tongue, large build and creepy expressions.
  • Graceful Loser: After a brief breakdown following his loss to Soma, Subaru tries his dish, and is so awestruck he calms down, concedes defeat, and volunteers to quit cooking (the same losing condition Soma set upon himself for their playoff-turned-Shokugeki), though Soma dissuades him from doing so.
  • Hate Sink: While there's no shortage of arrogant cooks in the series, Subaru's behavior is much darker to the point that even the judges comment on his tactics. This fades away after his defeat and the reveal of his backstory. Afterwards, Subaru becomes one of Soma's allies and he buries the hatchet with Takumi. He is also appreciated by many Rebel students for opposing Central at the Regiment de Cuisine.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Thanks to Soma's words of advice, Subaru gives up his unscrupulous ways and wholeheartedly joins Soma's Full Moon Banquet stall. To fully cement his turn, he joins the rebels in their Team Shokugeki against Central.
  • Honorary True Companion: It takes a while, but he eventually becomes this during the Central arc. Not only does he join the Rebel team, he also helps his fellow first years train for their matches in the third bout after he loses. Even Takumi no longer holds any animosity towards him (especially after learning it was Eizan who was pulling the strings during the Autumn Elections), showing concern for him when he offers to trace so many cooks in such a short amount of time, and thanking him for helping him increase his skills enough to beat and humiliate Subaru's former boss in their match.
  • I Owe You My Life: While Soma compliments him for effectively mimicking him and quickly accepting his offer, Subaru quietly mumbles that he owes him a lot — presumably for helping him not to give up on his cooking even after losing to Soma.
  • Insufferable Genius: He really is a good cook. He has good aesthetic sense, a fine sense of taste, wide knowledge, inventiveness, attention to detail and analysis. He just has such a foul personality it is said that no sensible restaurant would ever want to hire him. He's referred to as an awful cook because all he cares about is winning, not preparing good food.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: A lot of more delicate work during cooking is oddly dainty for someone of his size, causing a judge to be put off by how maiden-like he was making a dessert. Outside of cooking, he's also very skilled at embroidery, and he meticulously and beautifully stitched the kanji of his name into his uniform.
  • Jack of All Trades: Given that his special skill is to copy and upgrade other chefs' styles, Subaru has a great set of skills, such as baking, decorating, garnishing and smoked ingredients, with many of the audience comparing his smoke techniques to Shun Ibusaki's, who is known as the "Smoke Prince".
  • Jerkass: He provokes the opponents he has to face and challenges them to Shokugeki to get their precious cooking tools back. Until he lost to Soma, and Soma lectures him to continue the path of cooking for the people's smiles, leading him to show a Hidden Heart of Gold for Soma's kindness.
  • Laughably Evil: During the Autumn Election at least, his stalking methods were both creepy as all hell and darkly humorous. After that arc, he's no longer an antagonist, but his imitations of other cooks, such as the Council of Ten, are still hilarious.
  • Logical Weakness: His "Perfect Trace" is an awesome skill on its own, however a few drawbacks to his skill have been noted:
    • For one, it's most effective against an opponent who is unaware of his methodology. If he's facing an opponent who knows his MO and can take appropriate precautions (though granted he does have experience working around that as well) there's a greater chance he will misread his opponent and cause his "Perfect Trace" to fall apart. Which is exactly what Soma does, with Subaru being blindsided by Soma constantly improving his dish all the way up to and during the match whereases he had assumed Soma would simply not bother making a proper dish and simply improvise something on the spot with an assortment of random ingredients.
    • Secondly, understanding what his opponent is doing doesn't help if he doesn't actually have the skills to replicate or improve on what's being done. This is what eventually causes him to lose to Satou Soumei; Mimasaka's skills are impressive, but not enough to make better sushi than a Fifth Seat whose speciality is sushi.
    • Thirdly, he cannot mimic more than one opponent at the time, and switching back and forth between two or more of them won't be anywhere as effective as the real ones working together. This is shown in the anime where his perfect trace couldn't replicate the skills of the Aldini Twins, no matter that he could match them individually.
  • Method Acting: Invoked. To be more effective and help Soma faster at the Moon Banquet Festival, he needed to research Soma's style more deeply, so Soma gave him the keys to Yukihira so he can get more in character, by copying every mannerism.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: His habit of collecting knives from his defeated opponents calls to mind Musashibo Benkei. Ryoko makes the comparison directly after learning about his tendency. The fact that he pulls a Heel–Face Turn and becomes loyal to Soma after his defeat only strengthens the similarities.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: He wears the school joggers instead of the regular uniform.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: When taunting Takumi right before their duel, his stongue sticks out to make him appear more loathsome.
  • Power Copying: Subaru doesn't specialize in any particular kind of food or style. Instead, he observes his opponent and copies their abilities and style, allowing him to first reproduce what they've made and then work from there on how to make it better. He calls it his Perfect Trace.
  • Practical Taunt:
    • Right before their match, Subaru pressed Takumi's Berserk Button by insulting Isami, so he can have a Shokugeki.
    • He tries this again with Soma, hoping his win over Takumi would make him fly off the handle and accept his Shokugeki out of anger. While Soma does take the challenge, he's unimpressed by Subaru's verbal bullying. Not only does he keeps a cool head during their encounter, Soma, with no hesitation whatsoever, raises the stakes in their Shokugeki, much to Subaru's shock.
  • Punny Name: His surname sounds like mimic, reflecting his signature skill.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He's an intimidatingly huge guy with the Face of a Thug, but he's very skilled in embroidery and other delicate works. Megumi also gets surprised by seeing him in a frilly apron. And his precise handwork with desserts lets him look like a maiden, much to the horror of the audience.
  • Red Baron: According to Eizan, he's called "King of Stalkers". His second nickname is "Perfect Tracer".
  • Refusal of the Call: Subaru was one of the few students nominated for the BLUE competition but he refused it.
  • The Sixth Ranger: To Soma and Megumi's Full Moon Banquet stall as well as the Regimental Battle against Central. In both cases, he is recruited and comes in later than the start.
  • Slasher Smile: Accompanied by his Overly-Long Tongue whenever he is challenging his prey.
  • Smarter Than You Look: He looks like a Delinquent (he probably is), but he's a very intelligent guy.
  • Smug Snake: He's very good, but he's also overconfident. He begins gloating during his match with Soma, but he assumed Soma had stopped preparing some time before whereas Soma was testing new improvements in his head right until the end. He has a Villainous Breakdown when he inevitably loses but upon recognizing that Soma's dish was better, he tries to quit as a chef, but Soma tells him not to be stupid and to learn from the experience.
  • Stalker without a Crush: It's stated that he's this; he knows details about people that any other shouldn't know.
  • Support Party Member: He makes for a fantastic sou chef.
    • His Perfect Trace enables him to double a chef's output without a decrease in quality or a change in flavor, which is invaluable during an event like the Moon Banquet Festival.
    • In Regimen de Cuisine, he shows that he can also copy his teammates, and help improve their cooking while preparing his own dish.
  • Took a Level in Badass: By the time of the showdown between the Rebels and Central, Subaru has mastered his tracing abilities to such an extent that he can do so with a glance to match a member of the Council of Ten in a variation he calls, "Perfect Trace: Flash". However, doing so is physically and mentally taxing, which could prove troublesome as the bouts go on. In addition, he still doesn't perfectly replicate the experience of the people he's copying. As a result, Subaru's sushi cuts were masterful, but designed for typical nigiri sushi, not the orb sushi Saitou was using. As such, Subaru made too many cuts, throwing off the flavor and texture.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After spending most of his early appearances challenging people to Shokugekis and making their lives miserable, Subaru later becomes a staunch ally of Soma and co, regularly popping in to help out when necessary.
  • Troll: He intentionally upsets people, both to bait them into matches they don't need to enter and to keep them off balance during the match itself.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: As a child, Subaru had tried to be the best in cooking to gain his father's praise and recognition.
  • Younger Than He Looks: He's the same age as Soma and the other first year students, but he looks much older than he is.

    Miyoko Houjou

Miyoko Houjou

Voiced by: Asami Seto (Japanese), Kara Greenberg (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shokugeki_miyoko.jpg

Heiress to a Chinese restaurant in Yokohama, Miyoko's specialty are Chinese techniques and wok maneuvers.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Serious, tall, imposing and with a big fanbase, despite the fact she Does Not Like Men; all checked.
  • Character Development: She started as a cold and tough girl with trust issues on men, and was quick to dismiss Megumi when she revealed that she relied on Soma's help. After Megumi demonstrates her real talent at the Autumn Election preliminaries, Miyoko decides to change her attitude towards men and get closer to the staff members of her restaurant.
  • Curtains Matchthe Window: Both her hair and eyes are purple.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After seeing Megumi's performance in the preliminaries and the support she gets from men, she starts to question if her Straw Feminist mindset will really take her anywhere. She eventually stated that she is aiming to be closer to her staff thanks to Megumi's influence.
  • Does Not Like Men: The restaurant her father owns is full of Straw Misogynists who looked down on her cooking skills because of her gender and had tried to drive her out of the kitchen, causing her to have a low opinion of men in general. Most of all to her senior Kuga, because he's too annoying for her. She does, however, respect Soma.
  • Dude Magnet: Has a huge group of guys cheering for her.
  • Foil: For Megumi — where Miyoko is a stern, strong, and man-hating lone wolf, Megumi is shy, humble, trusting and surrounded by men who appreciate her work.
  • Freudian Excuse: The head chef at her family's restaurant told all the other cooks in private that he intended to drive her out, meaning she had to both be better than him and to maintain a defensive attitude against him and the others to keep her place.
  • Graceful Loser: After the preliminaries conclude, she approaches Megumi to give her support for the next round, indicating Megumi earned her respect as a chef.
  • Heir Club for Men: Wants to graduate from Totsuki to be able to manage her family's Chinese restaurant, where all the male cooks underestimate her because of her gender.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Mixed with Statuesque Stunner — she's at least a head taller than Megumi, so much so that when she was reintroduced in the runoff to the Full Moon Banquet she was playing basketball.
  • Jerkass Realization: Admits that she misjudged Megumi when she sees that not only did Megumi outscore her in the preliminaries, but also had the full support of the men in her village. The way she is now, Miyoko simply can't really run a kitchen properly.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She wears the tie instead of the girls' bow.
  • Out of Focus: Following her elimination from the Autumn Election preliminaries, she wasn't seen again until the Full Moon Banquet, where she serves as a link between Soma (and, by extension, Megumi) and Terunori (who wanted her to join his stall).
  • Perpetual Frowner: She rarely ever smiles, in fact.
  • Straw Feminist: Miyoko starts defending Megumi against anyone questioning how she got into the Autumn Election, but withdraws her statement when she hears about Soma helping Megumi, assuming the latter is weak for apparently depending on a guy to help her when in truth Soma mostly just helped her regain her confidence. A flashback reveals most of the chefs she worked with at her family restaurant were Jerkasses, giving her this mindset. However, when she sees that Megumi is her equal or better and has the support of all the men in her village rather than their grudging obedience she resolves to change herself.
  • Underestimating Badassery: In a weird way towards Megumi. She's initially eager to meet her after hearing the stories about how she drew with Shinomiya in a Shokugeki. Megumi then starts to undersell herself, claiming that it was mostly because of Soma that she didn't lose. Miyoko reads this as Megumi riding Soma's coattails and then starts to look down on her. It's later on during the Autumn Elections that she reaffirms that Megumi really is as skilled as she initially believed.
  • Wall Pin of Love: Pins Megumi to the wall when she questions her about her duel with Chef Shinomiya during the Training Camp. She even opens with "I'm interested in you", although the context is not a romantic one.
  • When She Smiles: She finally does this when admits to Megumi that her kindness inspired Miyoko to be friendlier with her staff.

    Nao Sadatsuka

Nao Sadatsuka

Voiced by: Saori Goto (Japanese), Karlii Hoch (English), Julia Cremonte (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nao_7.jpg

Erina's first-year stalker, forced to watch her idol from a distance after losing a Shokugeki to Hisako and being handed a 50-meter restraining order. Her speciality is boiled dishes, and despite the food being horrifically pungent, they taste unusually phenomenal.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Has a crush on Erina, constantly speaking about how much she wants Erina to taste her dish and scold her. Later, she begins creeping on Hisako after being thoroughly defeated a second time.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: She stalks Erina. Hisako got an unofficial restraining order for her in middle school, so Nao just sends tons of letters to Erina every day. Later, she grows obsessed with Hisako, who is even more disturbed.
  • Beautiful All Along: When she's drawn in a serious style instead of her cackling witch pose, she's shown to be gorgeous. It only lasts for a single panel, though.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Her dishes smell horrible and use unusual ingredients, but the quality of flavor is superior than the average Totsuki student.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She gives the creepy vibe to everyone and is obsessing over Erina (and later Hisako), but she never does any real harm to anyone, aside from sending cursed letters or stalking them. Even after being jealous of Soma for a while, she was open to form a friendship with him after bonding.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Inverted, then played straight, in a manner of speaking. Being beaten in a Shokugeki by Hisako during middle school made Nao hate her even more, but when she ate Hisako's curry dish in the Autumn Election, whereupon Nao develops a crush on Hisako, to her utter disgust.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She can be seen in episode 2 of the anime, watching Erina outside a window with her binoculars.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: As if her Stalker with a Crush tendencies didn't make her creepy enough, she has long jet black hair and sickly pale skin that makes her look like ghost.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Hisako, as she is her opposite in both appearance and cooking styles. While both specialize in boiled dishes, Nao is gloomy, socially awkward and cooks like a witch, while Hisako is refined, graceful and specializes in medicinal dishes. Also, while Hisako has a big admiration for Erina and is regarded as her only friend, Nao takes this to creepy levels of obsession and Erina barely knows she exists.
  • Expy: To Sadako Yamamura in terms of appearance, as well as to Tomoko Kuroki by way of her creepy obsession with Erina (and later Hisako).
  • Femme Fatalons: She is shown to have long pointy nails to accentuate her witch appearance.
  • Giggling Villain: When alone, Nao tends to do a "Hihihi!" laugh out of nowhere, creeping out anyone around her.
  • Hollywood Restraining Order: Two years ago, she lost to Hisako, and as per Shokugeki stipulation was forced to be no less than 50 meters away from Erina. Too bad it didn't include stalking with binoculars or sending more than 30 letters per day.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: When she sees Hisako behead a living turtle during her Autumn Election quarterfinals match with Akira, Nao grows even more creepily infatuated.
  • Mess on a Plate: The curry dish she made for the Autumn Election prelims looks and smells terrible, but tastes so good the judges can't stop eating it. The reaction of the judges compares it to BDSM.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Her skirt is longer below the knees to match her creepy aura.
  • Odd Friendship: Althought she initially intended to harrass Soma for working with Hisako, she connected with him immediately because of their common interest in "repulsive food", which made her "forgive him" and be friendly with each other.
  • Out of Focus: Like Miyoko, she was seldom seen between the Autumn Election preliminaries and the Autumn Banquet.
  • Punny Name: Her name is similar to Sadako and the sada part in both names is written with the same kanji, 貞.
  • Red Baron: "The Boiling Witch".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and she's a creepy stalker.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She's drawn in a slightly more comical style than the rest of the characters, generally hunched over and cackling with her hair a mess. When she gets cleaned up for a single panel imagine spot thanks to Hisako’s cooking, she looks incredibly beautiful. She instantly goes back to normal, however.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: During the Autumn Election she had her hair tied. Once she tasted Hisako's curry, her purification showed her with her hair free.
  • Stalker Shrine: In the anime, it's shown that Nao is making her test runs surrounded by photos of Erina and a doodled-out one of Hisako.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She stalks Erina, but she has to keep to a distance of 50m. Later, she grows infatuated with Hisako, though the latter doesn't seem to have entirely caught on yet, despite being creeped out. Amusingly, the second ED is all about Nao's attempts to stalk Erina and observing her through binoculars.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Wants to take Hisako's spot as Erina's secretary that she challenges her to a Shokugeki; it doesn't work. Since then, Nao attempts to find a way to defeat Hisako. Irony abounds when she turns into a Stalker with a Crush on Hisako after being beat again at the Autumn Election.
  • Wicked Witch: When cooking, she looks more like a witch stirring a cauldron, leading to her title "Boiling Witch". This was even her attire for her Full Moon Banquet stall.

Master of Ceremonies of Shokugekis and other competitions at Totsuki. She starts to play a prominent role as announcer for Block B of the 43rd Autumn Election preliminaries.

  • Attention Whore: She gets irritated if someone else steals her thunder.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Acts all cute and innocent, but curses at Ikumi in a bonus chapter for getting more attention. She also lies about her tastes to make herself look better. She drops the sheep's clothing part after being "brainwashed" by Azami's regime and doesn't bother to hide her unpleasant thoughts.
  • Burger Fool: In the OVA, Urara is working as a maid in the cosplay cafe and doesn't want anyone to find out about this. Fortunately, Takumi doesn't recognize her at all
  • Evil Costume Switch: By the time she is hosting the Regimental Battle, she is wearing a dark Gothic Lolita dress with a new wicked face to show that she fully supports Central.
  • Feigning Intelligence: According to the Omake Chapter 14.5, she states her favorite book is The Little Prince (she never read it) and her favorite movie is Amélie (it's really Drunken Master 2).
  • Flipping the Bird: She flips off the rebels after Soma's and Satoshi's victory against their opponents
  • Foil: To Yua, her polar opposite in personality.
  • Genki Girl: She's a very cheerful and energetic host and keeps the male audience very invested.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: As soon as Ikumi appeared on stage, she internally cursed Ikumi and called her a "Holstein cow". She also had the same reaction towards Miyoko Hojou and Alice Nakiri.
  • The Host: Was the MC for the Shokugeki between Soma and Ikumi, and for the Block B of the Autumn Election. She's also the one who announces the details for the Classic. It also seems to be her only role, as she is also a Totsuki student but we never get to see her cooking level.
  • Informed Ability: While her only role is to be the MC of the tournaments, her actual cooking skills are never shown, as she is also a student at Totsuki (She must have some skills, since she survived the Training Camp). Also her comments on the Shokugekis have no useful notes, which are often provided by the contestants or even members of the audience. This is subverted in the OVA, where it's shown that she works at a Cosplay Cafe part-time. Even though they didn't recognize her, Takumi notes that the omurice she made was surprisingly well done.
  • Jerkass: She is a jerk who insults other female students mentally when they gain more attention from the boys.
    • During the Autumn Election Preliminary, as she was ready to wrap the round, Megumi interrupted her because she was still waiting her turn. Afterward, she was hurrying Megumi to present her dish in a rude tone, just because she wanted to have a tie-break between Isami and Miyoko as the finale.
    • After Azami's takeover, she is one of the students sided with Central, to the point that when she is chosen as the host for the Regimental Battle, she openly insults the Rebel Team by calling them "Insolent no-better-than-vomit, detested scoundrels, scum" on open microphone.
  • Karma Houdini: After Central is defeated and Soma regains the respect of the student body, it's never shown her reaction, or a comment on her nasty behaviour during the duels.
  • MRS Degree: Her goal according to Volume 2's Extras is to "Become a Wife". So while her cooking skills are seemingly enough to get her through the Training Camp (See Informed Ability) it's clear that her only reason to attend Totsuki isn't to become a chef but to marry one.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Shoko is easily beaten after the latter's introduction.
  • Running Gag: Her getting irritated whenever she loses the audience's attention. Also, if there's a shot of the crowd reacting to her, half of them will be boys cheering wildly, the other half will be girls growling in irritation that she's hogging all of the attention.
  • School Idol: Very popular among the guys due to her role as MC. On the other hand, behind every crowd of boys screaming her name you'll find a bigger crowd of girls boiling with bloodlust.
  • Sore Loser: Even after seeing Soma's and Satoshi's victory against their opponents in their respective battles, she remains in denial and believing Shoko of all people would turn the tide. Unfortunately, Shoko is easily beaten after her lengthy introduction about her. She also curses out loud after Soma and Erina defeat Tsukasa and Rindou, right when the effect of Momo's dish that turned her nicer wears off.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Subverted. During the Regimental Shokugekis, her nastiness reaches such levels that Momo gives her a spoon full of Damask Rose Syrup, which turns her nice for two days. She goes back to normal during the last bout.

The other Master of Ceremonies and Urara's counterpart at Block A of the Autumn Election qualifiers.

  • Foil: To Urara, the other Autumn Elections announcer.
  • Girlish Pigtails: How she wears her hair, perhaps to highlight her relatively more innocent personality compared to Urara.
  • Nice Girl: In an Omake, Yua gives the microphone to Madoka Enomoto so she can introduce herself to the viewers, in contrast with Urara, who reluctantly gives her a bit of her spotlight.
  • Shrinking Violet: In stark contrast to Urara, Yua is rather shy and meek, which doesn't help considering that the block she was in charge of announcing includes the likes of Soma and Ryou. Why she's an MC with a personality like hers is anyone's guess.

A first-year student and a member of the Miyazato Seminar.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: While the manga version doesn't give away her name or year, she appears at the Training Camp cooking next to Marui.
  • Fangirl: Of Marui during the preliminaries of the Autumn Election, as she is seen cheering for him along with the club members.
  • Fan of the Underdog: Subverted. She admires Marui a lot. At the school in general, Marui is one of the least popular of the students, while he is also the most skilled from the Miyazato Seminar.
