The Council of Ten Masters
Nene Kinokuni
Nene Kinokuni

Sixth seat of the Council of Ten and a 91st Generation (2nd year) student, who was first introduced in the Autumn Leaf viewing event. She's a prim and proper young lady who has trained diligently on cooking and many Japanese traditions since a very young age. She specializes in traditional Japanese cooking, with soba noodles being her specialty.
- All for Nothing: Despite being a proud member of the Council of Ten, her childhood training to become a top-ranking chef proves to be useless when her own restrictions in following solely on her family cooking style without considering on improvements outside her family teaching backfires on her big time during her match with Soma.
- Always Second Best: Similar to Gin Doujima and Joichiro Saiba, the seats of Isshiki and Nene do not represent who the better cook actually is. Isshiki just has a lower seat because he never takes things seriously, which just frustrates her even more given how hard she works.
- Appeal to Tradition: This is Nene's stance on cooking. Make no mistake, her Japanese cuisine is exceptional and of outstanding quality, but it turns out to be a fallacy, because Nene is stuck up believing that it is the only correct way to cook.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: At the start of the series, she was nominally the best cook of the 91st generation according to the Council of Ten Masters ranking. However because of Isshiki's Brilliant, but Lazy attitude, she was in constant angst over the fact that she might not be the best of their generation and angrily demanded a match with Isshiki to settle it. After the timeskip when Soma reformed the Council to strictly follow Asskicking Leads to Leadership, Isshiki rose to Second Seat while Nene was demoted to Ninth seat, the lowest rank among their generation, below even Eizan.
- Catchphrase: A cold and dry "Die", usually aimed to whoever is annoying her at the moment.
- Childhood Friends: With Isshiki. She doesn't agree that they were "friends".
- Crippling Overspecialization: A Double Subversion. While her specialty dishes are Soba Noodles, she claims to have knowledge in a variety of dishes which would make you think she avoids this trope. However, she's only ever focused on what she was taught by her family and never thought of any ways to innovate her dishes or the effect it'd have on the people who eat them. And that's how she ultimately loses to Soma in the Regimental Shokugeki, because she was so focused on adhering to her traditions that she completely failed to realize the effect the cold environment would have her dish's taste, and thus it losing its flavor compared to Soma's.
- Deadpan Snarker: Very cold and blunt when putting down someone, particularly towards Kuga.Kuga: (To Soma) If you surpass me in anything related to cooking, I'll gladly accept your challenge.Nene: Height.Kuga: I SAID "RELATED TO COOKING", HAG!!
- Dude Magnet: Many guys find her harsh Ice Queen persona attractive, though they don't approach her.
- Fatal Flaw: Her weakness is to strictly follow the teachings of her family, which were seemingly perfected over generations, down to a T, without any concern about her customers, or any thought of improvising and changing anything. This is the reason many oppose Central and Azami Nakiri's new policy at Totsuki. Unlike Soma, Nene didn't adapt to the environment, and so her "perfect" soba lost part of its flavor, while Soma's soba flavor managed to stay powerful.
- First-Name Basis: In the past with Satoshi Isshiki, as Isshiki left his house to train with the Kinokuni family when he became four years old. Their relationship quickly got colder when Nene became envious of his talents, as he quickly and casually surpassed her in everything she trained for. Nowadays they call each other by their family names.
- Foil: To Satoshi Isshiki. They share similar backgrounds, yet are very different at the same time. Both are children to two of Japan's foremost culinary families, the Kinokuni of the East (Tokyo) and the Isshiki of the West (Kyoto). While Nene is stoic and cold, Isshiki is kind and warm. Nene loves the tradition her family passed on to her and spent her life happily studying it, while Satoshi seems to be on bad terms with his family being the Black Sheep of the family. This is shown in their cooking, as Nene follows what she was taught to the letter and has perfectly mastered it while Satoshi likes to modify and play with recipes to the point that his food doesn't really follow any cultural guidelines and is just his.
- Friendship Denial: While their flashbacks suggest they were close once, she denies that she and Isshiki were friends at all.
- Graceful Loser: Despite being frazzled about the fact that Soma's soba has superior flavor to hers, when Isshiki and the judges point out the flaw in her methods and her dish, she does acknowledge that she lost and makes no further arguments or tantrums.
- Green-Eyed Monster: As a kid, she quickly became jealous of how easily Isshiki took to the arts and crafts she took years of practice and hard work to master. This soured their relationship.
- Hard Work Hardly Works: The reason why Nene isn't on friendly terms with Isshiki. He may have been on a lower seat than her, but everyone in the Council of Ten knew Isshiki is only the 7th seat because he doesn't give it his all. Isshiki outclasses her seemingly casually in everything she trained for years, which makes her feel pathetic. It then turns out that her hard work doesn't work because she merely did exactly what she was taught. All she did was recreate the dishes that her family considered to be the best, not caring whether it will actually bring out the best flavor for her customers.
- Humble Pie: Her defeat at Soma's hands was definitely a low blow to her pride.
- Hypocrite: For a chef who wants to fight honorably and dislikes anyone who jeers at Soma, she ironically isn't above all in belittling Soma, due to her overconfidence in her cooking.
- Ice Queen: She's rather cold and harsh most of the time, including insulting a crowd that was cheering for her because they were being vulgar.
- Leitmotif: Cup of Possibility
- Letting Her Hair Down: In her third year, she starts wearing her hair loose, possibly as a sign of her defrosting.
- Lonely Rich Kid: Subverted. As a child, Nene had no time to play with other children because her schedule was filled with various traditional Japanese lessons. Turns out, she enjoyed these lessons so much, she didn't actually feel lonely at all.
- Not So Above It All: She's just as awkwardly surprised as everyone else in chapter 207 when Soma draws "Soba" as their theme ingredient, which happens to be her specialty. In Chapter 213 and 214, Nene is shocked to hear the judges' verdict, regarding her and Soma's soba dishes. When Isshiki explains her Fatal Flaw, she has to admit that Soma is superior to her.
- Not So Stoic:
- Nene finally shows emotion In chapter 202, after Tsukasa tells Eizan that it would be problematic if he lost again, Nene is seen trying very hard to hold in her laughter, and she also snaps at Eizan after he throws down her cell phone, making it the very first time she ever raises her voice.
- She is utterly confused when Isshiki predicts that she will lose her duel to Soma. Later on, the judges' positive reactions towards Soma's fried Soba only add to her confusion and disbelief. When the judges declare Soma's Soba to be better, she is devastated, as she overlooked a fatal factor that influenced her dish, while Soma took their circumstances under consideration and produced a better flavor.
- Nene blushes and tears up when Satoshi tells her how much he respects and admires her drive, despite always coming up short against him.
- Oh, Crap!: When she realizes that her soba didn't amount to Soma's.
- Scary Shiny Glasses: Often when she's getting serious.
- The Stoic: She doesn't raise her voice while having a verbal smackdown against Kuga, and responds to his shouts by coldly saying, "Die".
- Tempting Fate: An oddly positive version of this. During her match against Soma she declared she would defeat him regardless of the main ingredient, right after Erina explained her specialty in Japanese cuisine and more specifically Soba noodle. Three guesses on what ingredient Soma draws from the lot.
- Tsundere:
- She shows signs of this; when Subaru tried to trace her, he completely turned into a tsundere.
- This nature is only more pronounced during Isshiki's match with Tsukasa, where he reveals to her that she was his inspiration for his love of cooking, an admission that deeply touches her to the point of tears. When he loses the match and notices how intently she's looking at him, she fervently denies any concern she has over him.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: If her flashbacks with Isshiki are anything to go by, she was a lot nicer when they were little, before their relationship soured due to Nene's envy.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: She was raised in an old family, who trained her in many traditional arts besides making Sobba, such as playing the dragon flute and Japanese dance and caligraphy. During her bout with Soma, she is called a "thoroughbred in every sense of the word". Though she is always poised and speaks softly, she is cold.
- Worthy Opponent: She had originally dismissed Soma as a small fry. After Soma defeated her, Nene is shaken and admits she cannot match up to him as a chef. She ponders upon Soma's strength and wonders if he is just a mere first year. After the timeskip when Isshiki reveals about Soma's father, Nene understands that some part of his secret lies with Joichiro.

Terunori Kuga
Terunori Kuga
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji (Japanese), Alejandro Saab (English)
Eighth seat of the Council of Ten and a 91st Generation (2nd year) student, who was first introduced in the Autumn Leaf viewing event. He's a loud, boisterous student with a very outgoing personality who specializes in Chinese cooking, particularly spicy Szechuan dishes, and is the head of the Chinese Cuisine Research Society.
- Actually Pretty Funny: While everyone else thought Soma was insane for challenging Kuga at the Moon Festival, in Chinese Cuisine, with a booth right next to him, and a parallel spot in the festival's guide book, Kuga himself laughed while favorably commenting on how chill and extreme Soma was acting. Then he goes all serious and ominous.
- Animal Motifs: He was associated with a lion, while Soma was, at the time, a stray cat against him.
- Anime Hair: Sports a two-colored hair that is exaggeratedly spiky in its style, at least compared to most of the other cast.
- Berserk Button: His height. He appeared to take Eizan's insults quite well until the latter called him a "midget." He also boasts that he would accept a shokugeki from any of the first years who could beat him in something cooking-related and Nene mentions "height." He doesn't respond well.
- The Bus Came Back: In Chapter 180, Kuga and his RS members give Soma a plethora of spices for brainstorming a bear meat dish.
- Crippling Overspecialization: During the Full Moon Banquest festival, his booth specializes in one specific dish. While it's very good, it's also so spicy that a lot of people just can't handle it, allowing Soma to poach away more and more of his customers as the festival goes on. Further, he's using cooks that had to be extensively drilled in order to cook his mapo tofu, meaning that he can't prepare a new dish or anything to counter Soma's extensive menu.
- Kuga himself seems to acknowledge this after his loss to Eishi during his first year. During the Regimental Shokugeki, he eventually subverts this by employing French techniques to his usual Szechuan cooking.
- Crocodile Tears: Played for Laughs. Soma and even his own club members lampshade how insincere he is when he gets all teary-eyed. When he shows genuine sympathy or rage, his expression is nowhere near as cheesy as when he fakes it.
- Death Glare: Glares at Soma after he points out that he has far more experience than him in running a restaurant.
- Defeat Means Respect: Zigzagged. Sōma was able to outsell Kuga on the fourth day of the Moon Banquet Festival but couldn't defeat him in overall earnings. Since then Kuga believes in Soma's abilities and becomes one of his allies.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: He's very strict about training his club members to cook uniformly. This is also Played for Laughs when he makes them sing a military cadence while carrying a huge pillar.
- Establishing Character Moment: His passive-aggressive personality is quickly made clear when, upon arriving to the leaf viewing event, he immediately suggested the first years to just call it a day and go home, and loudly wonders if the school can just cancel the event altogether as a waste of time.
- Everyone Has Standards:
- Despite complaining about formalities and all the traditions Senzaemon made them fulfill (like the Red Leaf Hunt), he was clearly upset over his fellow Council members voting Azami as new dean, and even boycotts subsequent meetings. This makes sense because, as head of the Chinese RS, Azami's reforms could doom his club. Unfortunately, this makes Azami remove him from the Council of Ten.
- In Chapter 184, he's outraged upon learning that Azami blackmailed Akira into joining Central by holding Jun's research hostage.
- Graceful Loser: Even though he was pissed when he first realized that Soma beat him at fourth day sales, he seem to have accepted the results the next day, and even acknowledged that the latter is just going to improve.
- After his loss against Eishi in the Regiment de Cuisine, Kuga is content that he was at least able to rattle him.
- Hidden Depths: In his first year, Kūga had challenged Eishi to a duel and lost. Later, Eishi forgot who Kūga was, deeply upsetting the latter.
- During his match against Eishi in the Team Shokugeki, Kuga takes help from fellow teammate Mimasaka. The audience calls him out for cheating. Kuga retorts that the rules of the Team Shokugeki allow helping teammates. He also declares that he prioritizes teamwork over personal pride if it means victory.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: As soon as he is introduced, he acts passive-aggressively hostile towards the entire first year class and mocks Soma at every opportunity. He also spares no opportunity to gloat about the profits he's making during the festival (and other's lack of profits). However, once Soma gains his respect he tones the jerky behavior down and shows that he has his reasons for his behavior.
- Hot-Blooded: Speaks out most of his dialogues by shouting them, and very quickly gets into fights with both Nene and Eizan.
- Ironic Echo:
- Invoked by Rindou when she gets a rise out of the fact that Kuga issued the same challenge the previous year at the Red Leaf Viewing Festival that Soma did in the current year. The difference being that it actually worked when Kuga did it, but when Soma does it, Kuga himself refuses to accept it.
- His stated reason for opposing Central is because he finds their regime boring, which is similar to how Rindou supports them for fun.
- Masochist's Meal: His cooking is painfully spicy, but it's so good that people can't stop eating it.
- Mood-Swinger: He is a roller coaster of emotions. While scolding one of his staff members, he started with a childish whine, and instantly changed into a more menacing tone when he assigned 30 more repetitions. Then changes to an excited mood when he invites Miyoko once again to join the club. He also blows up if anyone mentions how short he is.
- The Napoleon: He is boisterous, loud, likes to berate his opponents and takes it very badly whenever others mock his height.
- The Nicknamer: He calls Soma "Yukihira-chin" and Eishi Tsukasa "Tsukassan".
- No Indoor Voice: Almost everything he says is in shouts, either in boastful bragging or childish whining. When he gets serious, he actually gets quieter.
- Out of Focus: After Azami takes over Totsuki, he doesn't appear again and is only mentioned by the other members of the Council, and we don't even see his reaction after being booted out of the Council of Ten. Then he and his club return to help Soma brainstorm a dish for his rematch against Hayama.
- The Promise: He is shown making one with Eishi before the Full Moon Banquest festival. It turns out that the promise was for Eishi to agree to a shokugeki if Kuga manages to lead the central area standings for five days straight, because Kuga wants to avenge his brutal loss to Eishi the year prior.
- The Proud Elite: He's very blatant in flaunting his position as a member of the Council of Ten, and would repeatedly remind Soma and the other first years how much they are above the rest of the Totsuki students.
- Rank Up: After Central is disbanded, Kuga is promoted to the 3rd Seat of the new Council of Ten.
- Sadist: A downplayed example. The main reason he prefers Szechuan Cuisine over all of the other styles in general Chinese Cuisine is because he enjoys when his customers sweat and get red because of his food, as the sting is so deep, and yet they keep eating.Kuga: I love torturing people with my food.
- Second Place Is for Losers: He aimed to have first place for five consecutive days of the Full Moon Banquet and gets really pissed when Soma broke his streak on the fourth day. He has his reasons.
- Sixth Ranger: Joins the remaining rebels in their Team Shokugeki against Central.
- Spoiled Brat: He tells Soma that his love for Szechuan cuisine comes from his many travels to China, which tipped Soma about his rich background. While they were hiking in the mountains, Terunori started to whine wanting milk tea instead of the coffee.
- Unsportsmanlike Gloating: He often speaks to his rivals with a condescending and passive-aggressive tone. Being The Proud Elite, he seems to enjoy gloating at Soma when observing the latter trying, and seemingly failing, to challenge him. During the first day of the Moon Banquet Festival, he approached Soma and Megumi to "compliment" their low sales, only to rub in their faces the mountain of tickets he got, thus the look of surprise on his face when he discovers that Soma managed to make a big leap from 40th (last) to 35th place on the second day. However, during the fourth day, he's unable to keep up with Soma's completed booth, despite having far more resources, staff and preparation at his disposal and there's apparently nothing he can do to fix the situation. His perfect streak of top sales is broken and he's pissed.
- Verbal Tic: Has a habit of repeating certain words for emphasis, e.g. "I really, really, really mean it!"
- The Worf Effect: Backstory-wise, we see how big of a threat Tsukasa is by the fact that he defeats Kuga 5-0 in a Shokugeki. Although Soma manages to outsell Kuga on the second-to-last day of the Moon Banquet festival, it was only through the intervention of his friends at the last minute.
Etsuya Eizan
Etsuya Eizan

Ninth Seat of the Council of Ten and a 91st Generation (2nd year) student, he's a selfish, arrogant teen with little regard for others beyond ways of making him get money. With his incredible business savvy when it comes to the culinary industry, he serves as a business consultant for many famous restaurants, food chains, produce distributors and the like, despite his age. His culinary style revolves around utilizing flavors and techniques that effectively negate the flavors of other dishes so his own stands out more.
- Alliterative Name: Etsuya Eizan.
- Armor-Piercing Question: Soma hits him with a particularly powerful one during their Shokugeki that kicks off Eizan's big Break the Haughty moment.Soma: Does my cooking scare you, Senpai?
- Berserk Button:
- He hates it when anyone interferes with his plans, vowing to crush Soma for disrupting Mozuya's Sumire District branch. After failing to beat him with Subaru he instead tries to break him by disbanding Polaris. That, too, doesn't pan out as he planned (no thanks to the residents' resistance), forcing him to actually try cooking.
- After his Shokugeki with Soma, Soma himself has become his button. Just seeing him again in Chapter 204 sent Eizan into fury that caused him to emit a black haze of Killing Intent along with Eizan furiously declaring his desire to crush Soma, disturbing Nene, who was standing next to him.
- Takumi as well, after Takumi manages to play him even worse than Soma did. When the judges are about to cast their votes, Eizan, having realized how badly he's lost, is driven to near tears as he angrily curses Takumi out.
- Badass Bookworm: He may be a smug gangster-type, but Etsuya is genuinely knowledgeable about the culinary arts and his business skills are second to none within the setting. Despite having a very small Shokugeki win record, he was admitted into the Council of Ten almost purely on his business sense and advisory role alone.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's capable of acting pleasant and sympathetic when attempting to recruit new business partners, including a shopkeeper who he screwed over with his dirty tactics.
- Break the Haughty:
- It starts in Chapter 145 with Soma's Armor-Piercing Question and ends in Chapter 147 due to Soma absolutely destroying him in a Shokugeki. Since then he's become much less smug and much more aggressive.
- Takumi breaks him even worse than Soma did, if that is even possible. For details, see Humiliation Conga below. As for the result, Eizan is so enraged that he's almost driven to tears.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: His counseling and talent with business earned him his place in the Council of Ten. However, Rindou believes that if he spent more effort on actually cooking instead of just consultation work he could easily surpass quite a few of the current Council of Ten. And this is partially the reason for his loss against Soma, who even lampshades it, telling him that the next time they have a Shokugeki he'd better be serious about it.
- Butt-Monkey: After his defeat at the hand of Soma, he became this. Central new recruits openly mocked him, the rest of the Council of Ten Masters treated him as The Chew Toy. Even the gallant Saito Soumei snarked at his expense. Very fitting given his status as a Hate Sink.
- The Chessmaster: His primary talent. Eizan vows revenge on Soma for ruining his plans with Mozuya. However, he doesn't directly challenge people, instead preferring to set up other seemingly unrelated events to get his way. Satoshi saw his hand in arranging the Autumn Election playoff pairings such that his lackey Subaru would meet Soma at the semifinals after beating the latter's friend/rival Takumi in the most dishonorable way possible, believing Soma would accept a Shokugeki in a blind rage. This plan works brilliantly when Soma bets his career in the shokugeki, although it ends up failing when Subaru loses.
- Combat Pragmatist:
- In his group Shokugeki match, he specifically uses artichokes in order to create an aftertaste that clashes with Takumi's dish. It's a dirty tactic, but it's still technically within the rules of the Shokugeki.
- In fact, this is his specific style of cooking and the source of his Red Baron. He uses his knowledge of chemicals to manipulate the taste buds of the judges and negate the flavors of his opposition. Dirty, undoubtedly, but technically not illegal.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: His talent lies in consultation for restaurants. He uses his position as a member of the Council to manipulate (like arranging the Autumn Election matches to get Soma out of Totsuki) and control many of the school stalls (the 20 stalls managed by him had to pay him the expensive fees). As Chapter 140 it's also revealed that he's willing to rig Shokugeki by hiring corrupt judges.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: So Rindou thinks. Despite his specialty lying in the business side of the culinary world, she assesses that were he to get serious, Etsuya can climb higher up the ranks of the Council of Ten, and that his knowledge and skill is part of why he is so good on the business end. Indeed, in his first school year, his profits were more than Totsuki's tuition fees. For all of the students in his year combined.
- Deadpan Snarker: Often retorts with one of these. When Natsume Sendawara started to complain how hard it was for her to open a slot in her agenda to be a judge of the Autumn Election, Eizan replied that she should simply have donated money instead (he later handwaved it). Also calls Kuga "midget" without cracking.
- Deconstructed Character Archetype: Believe in or not, of the standard The Hero in other similar stories. His day job is analyzing small businesses who're about to go under, developing a new dish, then rescuing and elevating those stores beyond their current state. That's basically the plot of every single shonen cooking mangas. Inject a realistic amoung of capitalism, greed, ego, and plain bad behaviour, and you get Eizan in a nutshell. He even quotes a lot of the dialogues common in those mangas in his negotiations (complete with a fake smile, of course)!
- Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Soma notes that Eizan concentrated so much on rigging the match and breaking his enemies' spirits that he didn't sufficiently prepare for the Shokugeki. And by the time he decided to try to beat Soma in cooking, it was already too late for him to come up with a better dish.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Etsuya vows to crush Soma's spirit after he spoils his plans for Mozuya. This comes off as exceptionally petty when one considers that Mozuya is just a chain restaurant, is but one of hundreds he has had a hand in operating, and that Soma had no prior knowledge of his role — it just so happened that its new Sumire District branch was endangering established businesses in his hometown.
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Sports one after being insulted by his Central colleagues.
- Evil Genius: A ruthless gang leader who is intelligent enough to work as a food consultant when he was still in middle school. Isshiki describes as an "Intellectual-type Yakuza."
- Evil Is Petty: His whole plan to get Soma humiliated in the Fall Classic (which includes Mimasaka's defeat of Takumi) boils down to Soma ruining his Mozuya business, and then rejecting his offer to work under him.
- Faux Affably Evil: Justified due to his intellectual Yakuza personality. He acts casual and polite for the sake of doing business or taunting his enemies, only to become foul-mouthed when his mood is spoiled. This is best shown when he states that he hastened the eviction of Polaris Dormitory's residents while insincerely apologizing for not mentioning it sooner.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Amongst the Council of Ten, no one seems particularly fond of Etsuya and some even seem pleased when he suffers humiliation. Nene shows distaste for his underhanded tactics, while Soumei admits, straight to his face, that watching him lose to Takumi was very satisfying.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul: His glasses often reflect, covering his eyes, which reflects his shady and manipulative personality.
- The Glasses Come Off: When he gets serious about actually handling the dirty work himself, he takes his glasses off.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: He is quick to lose his temper when he's being ignored, insulted or when thing aren't going the way he wants them to.
- Hate Sink: He goes out of his way to be despicable as possible, being a cheating bastard who even prefers to let his opponents know that he's not playing fair. His over-the-top haughty attitude also doesn't help. Many readers just want to slap him the moment he appears. This made his defeat by Soma and Takumi very satisfying.
- Hidden Depths: Given his penchant for manipulating things behind the scenes and his focus on consultation, it's easy to overlook the fact that Eizan is on the Council of Ten for a reason. In Chapter 144, Eizan shows off his skills and even Rindou comments that, if he actually got serious about cooking and competing with his fellow Council of Ten members, odds are that his rank would be a good bit higher than it currently is.
- Hoist by His Own Petard:
- During the Autumn Election he rigs the playoffs setup such that Soma would have to face Subaru after the latter has defeated Takumi in the most dishonorable way possible, knowing Soma would be offended at the way his Friendly Rival lost. The guy bets his career as a cook on the match, but not only does he win, he also earns the respect of the entire student body that had been snubbing him up to that point, especially after his impressive showing in the finals.
- Then he gets hit with is again later in his Shokugeki against Soma. The judges he asked to vote for him to teach everyone at Tootski a "lesson" ended up voting against him after Soma proves to make a better dish.
- Then he gets a third serving of this trope when Takumi Aldini defeats him in the Regiment de Cuisine by correctly predicting Eizan's method to negate his pizza's flavor and constructing it to benefit from the aftertaste instead of clashing with it. Takumi even says that he wouldn't have been able to make it so far if not for Eizan sending Subaru after him in the Autumn Election.
- Hope Crusher: How he tries to keep the student body in line. Because any dispute could be solved with a Shokugeki, he makes sure to set up a televised Shokugeki to make sure everyone knows how hopeless it is to fight back. That is why he is so pissed and starts taking the match seriously even with the judges on his side just to crush Soma.
- Humiliation Conga: Things just have not gone well for him ever since losing his Shokugeki against Soma, which was supposed to have been ''rigged' to begin with. After that, he's constantly belittled by the other members of the Ten and Central, who won't let him forget that he lost to a "little first-year." Then, despite being raring to go and fight Soma during the third round of matches during the Regiment de Cuisine, he gets Takumi instead, which pisses him off. Then he tries to beat Takumi by using the chemical composition of his own dish to interfere with the taste of Takumi's, only to find that Takumi read him like a book and had already adjusted his recipe to play off of Eizan's attempt at interference, which he did by applying Subaru's tactic of tracing his opponents, which Takumi only would have thought to do because he'd lost to Subraru during the Fall Classic, which Eizan had set up in an attempt to mess with Soma. Takumi then rounds things off by making Eizan realize that he's the architect of his own defeat, which is just rubbing salt in the wound at this point.
- Ignored Expert: Kinu, owner of Mozuya, hired him to provide advice, but ignored his warnings and as a result gets completely overpowered by Soma’s new business model.
- Irony: Eizan's modus operandi is manipulating people and events to achieve his desired results. Takumi beats him by manipulating him into using ingredients that would enhance his flavors instead of negating them.
- It's Personal: Has it out for Soma ever since he ruined Mozuya's Sumire District branch, to the point that he rigged the Autumn Election playoff brackets to get rid of him. Failing that, he begins targeting Soma with all the power at his disposal after voting to replace Senzaemon with Azami.
- Jerkass: If you haven't guessed already, he's a major prick and virtually doesn't get along with anyone, even his fellow elites. An example he turns off Soma's stove for the reason of wasting gas.
- Karma Houdini: Even though he supported Central with his match fixing scheme, Eizan is one of only two shown members of Central's team from the Regiment de Cuisine to retain a seat on the Council of Ten, currently occupying the 8th seat. Though this actually makes sense, given that Soma is adamant that cooking ability be the only factor that matters in joining the Ten. Vile as he may be, Eizan's cooking skills are still the real deal.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Everything having to do with his Shokugeki with Takumi is Eizan's heinous actions during the Autumn Elections coming back to bite him in the ass. Takumi wouldn't have been able to do any of what he did had Eizan not sent Subaru after him and Soma.
- Loophole Abuse: When he can't outright control the judges, he instead uses chemicals in his food to interfere with the taste of his opponent's food, which technically doesn't break the rules of the Shokugeki.
- The Man Behind the Man: Shown to be this twice.
- He was behind Mozuya's expansion that almost leaves the Sumire District shops out of business. Without Eizan's advices, it quickly folded.
- It's also revealed that Eizan took Subaru under his wing and encouraged his bad behavior, letting him defeat almost a hundred students in Shokugekis.
- After Azami's ascent as Dean, he hired his own judges so any Shokugeki against him by people protesting the new curriculum would always end in his favor.
- Manipulative Bastard: In order to get the Central judges to vote for him without tasting his opponent's dish, he plays on their devotion to Azami's elitist culinary ideology. However, he's on the receiving end of this trope when Soma basically provokes him into sabotaging his own schemes. And it happens again when Takumi effectively made him defeat himself in the Regiment de Cuisine.
- Nightmare Face: He's normal-looking, even kind of handsome normally, but he can make some ghastly◊ expressions when he gets wound up.
- Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Even though he planned to make the judges downright reject Soma's dish, Soma manages to bait Eizan by provoking him with an "Are you threatened by me?". Of course, Eizan reacts with his most pissed off face.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: He wears his shirt unbuttoned and a leopard print t-shirt underneath, which makes him look like a yakuza.
- Oh, Crap!:
- He has a moment of terror while struggling to comprehend how Soma could have made a far superior dish, and when he realizes the judges he coaxed in his favor all ended up voting for Soma.
- He has another one in Regiment de Cuisine when he realizes that he was the one being manipulated by Takumi instead of the other way around.
- Has a mild one when Isshiki reveals who is Sōma's father.
- Once Done, Never Forgotten: Whether it's his fellow Council of Ten members or other Central soldiers, absolutely nobody's letting him live down his defeat by Soma's hands, much to his ever growing chagrin.
- Only in It for the Money: Invoked. When he enrolled Totsuki at age 12, he said that he applied because he saw it as "Profitable".
- Out-Gambitted: During the Regiment de Cuisine, Eizan filled his dish with artichokes, which contain a chemical known as cyranine that messes with the taste buds to make things taste extra sweet. He counted on this to disrupt the sweet, tomato-based flavors of Takumi's Italian-style cooking by making it too saccharine to be palatable to the judges. However, Eizan didn't expect Takumi to anticipate this in advance, having spied on him and done his own research by watching Eizan's old Shokugekis. Thus Takumi modified his recipe so that it would work because of the fact that Eizan had loaded his dish with artichoke rather than in spite of it.
- Poor, Predictable Rock: When he's not bribing or verbally manipulating the judges, he mainly relies on giving his dish chemical properties to interfere with his opponent's dish. This allows Takumi to predict Eizan's use of artichokes and react accordingly.
- Pragmatic Villainy: When deciding the contestants for the autumn election, after Erina and Isshiki end up deadlocked over Soma's entry, Eizen breaks the tie by casting a vote in his favor. He makes it clear afterwards that it was only because it was a necessary step for his plan to have Soma publicly defeated by Mimaska.
- Rage Breaking Point: Eizan's constant attempts to take down Soma have him increasingly frustrated with each failed venture. When Soma defeats him in a Shokugeki, he reaches the breaking point, at which point all of his haughtiness is replaced by rage.
- Rank Up: As of the Regiment de Cuisine, Eizan now holds the Seventh Seat on the Council of Ten.
- After Central is disbanded, Eizan is given the Eighth Seat.
- Red Baron: "Alquimista" ("Alchemist" in Spanish and Portuguese), which refers to his mastery of chemicals to transform the taste of dishes. During Shokugekis, or when he's acting as a business consultant, he uses this skill to sabotage the opposition.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Bribes the judges to let him win Shokugeki matches. This is subverted when it turns out the judges were already loyal to Azami to begin with. In a way, this fits Eizan's character better because he managed to easily cheat the system without having to spend a single yen, which he would consider more lucrative.
- Smug Snake: He gets along terribly with his fellow classmates, uses people for his own gain and goes along with authorities only if they benefit him financially, even commenting that he only humors Senzaemon if the budget for the Council is still at his disposal. Unsurprisingly he is part of the group who elected Azami as the new dean. This nets him a lot of power over the school, but his composure starts to crack during his Shokugeki against Soma, when it became clear to him that the latter refuses to budge even with the knowledge that the three judges are corrupt, and his attempts at damage control only further sets up his fall after the trio gave Soma their votes.
- Sore Loser: He really can't accept his loss against Soma. Also, being insulted by his Central colleagues doesn't help.
- The Strategist: Eizan is the best food consultant in the market; in fact, Mozuya initially succeeds because of him. The minute Kinu decided not to notify him about Soma, business starts to derail.
- Teen Genius: He's already a massively profitable food consultant as a high school student.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: After all the humiliation he suffered, Eizan is forgiven by the Rebels and is offered the Eigth Seat. He seems content to cooperate with the new Council of Ten.
- Token Evil Teammate: So far, he is the only clearly evil member of the Council, only caring about money and power. While the other members are proud of their own culinary skills, Eizan doesn't care about it and doesn't hesitate to cheat and manipulate others to get what he wants. He's still on the Council after the timeskip, and is still primarily motivated by his business interests.
- Villain Ball: Had he been not more obsessed about crushing Soma's spirit than out-cooking him, the crooked judges would have probably voted for him in the end.
- Villainous Breakdown: Has a small one when neither Soma or the rest of the Polaris dorm are going to back down from his attempts to tear down their dorm. Its at this point, he decides to take his Shokugeki against Soma seriously to crush his spirit once and for all. Except it didn't work, and he had a much bigger breakdown when the rigged Shokugeki ended in Soma's crushing victory.
- Weak, but Skilled: In Eizan's own words, he prefers the business and economical side of cooking than the sport of it. That said, he's still able to make pretty exceptional dishes based purely on his cooking knowledge. This was ultimately his undoing in his match against Soma. While Eizan made a great dish that was well put together and tasted great, Soma's more creative and practical approach to cooking let him make a much better tasting dish despite lacking anywhere near the amount of knowledge that Eizan had.
- We Can Rule Together: He offers Soma a spot on his marketing team, which the latter rejects after realizing he's the one who almost contributed to the economic crisis in his neighborhood.
- Willfully Weak: He deliberately avoids confronting opponents directly with his own cooking in order to prove his chops as a first-rate manipulator. This comes back to bite him in the ass during his Shokugeki with Soma. Because he didn't take the match seriously until it was already underway, deciding his dish on the spot without bothering to make any preparations, he ends up losing to Soma's more carefully prepared and creative dish. Despite that, he still managed to produce a spectacular dish. Even Soma notes that, had Eizan been taking the match seriously from the get-go and bothered to make preparations or used his "specialty," the outcome would have probably been much different.
- Yakuza: Rumor has it that he may be one because of his influence as a food consultant. He also has the look of a Japanese yankee.
Central Recruits
The Central Army
A group of students personally handpicked by Azami Nakiri.
- I Am Not Left-Handed: Soma and Takumi realized that the survey was pointless, since Central soldiers have been challenging the Research Societies on their own specialties.
- Jerkass: Most of them, but special mention goes to Rentarou and Mea, who are openly antagonistic and delight in being jerks. Rentarou noticeably mocks and humiliates his opponent after defeating him, and then insults the rest of the student body, while Mea casually says that beating opponents after mocking them is much more exhilarating .
- The Proud Elite: They berate all the other students who are not part of Central.
- Smug Snake: They even mocked Eizan for losing against a freshman.
- Supreme Chef: All of them have great potential to join the Council of Ten. They have been racking huge body counts during the purge, defeating Research Society presidents at their own specialties.
Rentarou Kusunoki

You all are not among the chosen! So submit already! That's the right thing to do!
One of the Central recruits, a boisterous man sporting tattoos. His specialty is in heating techniques, especially low temperature cooking (particularly meats and fish), and is very adept at using kitchen equipment that can let him use said specialty, such as steam convection ovens, immersion circulators and others.
- Assumed Win: He already counts the match against Kurokiba as another win under his belt, even more so after he reveals the secret behind the juices in his dish when the match seems to initially comes to a stalemate, and he mocks Kurokiba, saying that he hasn't changed at all since the Autumn Elections. He quickly eats those words when the judges re-taste the dishes and declare Kurokiba the winner.
- Beat Them at Their Own Game: Just so he could show that he could do it, he challenged all the Research Societies on their specialties, with his own abilities still unknown to others. Gets this turned back on him in his match against Kurokiba.
- Card-Carrying Villain: Unlike the Central teachers, he doesn't even try to pretend Central's policies are beneficial to the majority of students. He outright admits that the whole point of Central is to make everyone else submit to a chosen few.Rentarou: All that's left for you fools to do is kiss the ground at Central's feet!
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Subverted. His fellow Central soldiers are aware of his real talent, but people who don't know Rentarou tend to think he is just a big-mouthed Jerkass until they see him cook with advanced machines. Even Sōma is shocked and admits that Rentarou is an amazing chef. Even though Kurokiba defeated him, he admits the match was a close one and he might not be able to defeat Rentarou so easily.
- Curtains Match the Window: Has orange hair and orange eyes.
- Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime adaptation, he gets a brief cameo during the Moon Banquet eyeing at Alice and Ryou.
- Foil: His hot-tempered attitude is similar to Kurokiba's, but where Kurokiba is laid-back and mellow until he starts cooking, Rentarou is a loud-mouthed jerkass who slips into an almost creepy serenity while working. Also, where Kurokiba is loyal and honest, Rentarou is opportunistic and smug.
- Hot-Blooded: He almost fell for Takumi's taunt and would have attacked him and Soma had Shigemichi not taken him away.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Takumi implies that he has this; and judging by his reactions to his statement, it seems true.
- Jerkass: He may be even nastier than Eizan.
- Playing with Fire: He has a fire-power motif in his style of cooking, with his absolute control over the temperature of his food being stylized as literally controlling fire. In fact, Mea Yanai jokes that he gets so quiet and focused when he cooks because his soul has gone into the food.
- The Proud Elite: Considers himself heads and shoulders above most of the student body and often boasts about being an "elite" and "one of the chosen ones". Takumi even calls him out on how much he throws the word "elite" around.
- This Cannot Be!: After the judges re-taste the dishes and declare Kurokiba's the winner. Rentarou is in utter disbelief that his dish lost against Kurokiba's in the matter of juiciness until he tastes it for himself.
- Shirtless Scene: Chapter 158 has his clothes being ripped off after tasting Kurokiba's dish.
- Smug Snake: He taunted Eizan for losing against a First Year, and also berated the entire student body for not having been chosen by Central.
- Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: When he initially targets Alice's Cutting Edge Cooking RS during the survivors purge he finishes with an offer to rescind the shutdown if she beats him in a Shokugeki and when Alice casually states that she has no problems with the dissolution (partly due to her not even knowing she was the captain) Rentarou launches into a magnanimous speech on how he has no choice but to accept if she wants to challenge him so badly before losing steam when her words catch up to him.
Mea Yanai

One of the Central recruits, an energetic girl who has no qualms in openly displaying her mean streak.
- Assumed Win: As with Rentarou, she presumed his match against Kurokiba will go to him after Rentarou reveals the secret behind the juiciness in his dish and quickly begins mocking until Soma states the judges haven't declared a winner yet. When Kurokiba is declared the winner, her fellow Central students and she are left in utter disbelief.
- Beta Bitch: Since Rentarou seems to be the leader of their quartet, Mea seems to be this to him, since they both enjoy their abuse to others, while Shigemichi and Rui just follow quietly.
- Character Tic: She often brings a hand up to the lower part of her face, fingers almost touching her lips.
- Cheshire Cat Grin: She always smiles with narrow eyes, giving her a smug expression.
- Comedic Sociopathy: She delights in seeing others be put down, even her own comrades in Central.
- Genki Girl: Almost every panel of her features her smiling.
- Jerkass: She's certainly in the running for the most mean spirited female student seen thus far.
- Laser-Guided Karma: After mocking Eizan for losing against a first year, she also loses against Ikumi during the purge.
- Meaningful Name: Ya-"nai Mea", the last bit sounding very much like "nightmare". Considering her nasty demeanor combined with her advanced culinary skills, her name can very much fit this for her opponents.
- Oh, Crap!: This is the face she makes, when she realizes that she and Shigemichi are about to lose against Nikumi and Megumi in their shokugekis.
- Pet the Dog: She tries to defend Rentarou by pointing out that he won all of his matches, except the one loss to Ryou, but is quickly shut up by Azami's glare.
- Smug Smiler: She goes around with a grin while mocking people outside of Central.
Rui Kofuru

One of the Central recruits, a long-haired woman who is far more skilled than her quiet demeanor and lack of presence lets on.
- Adaptation Expansion: In the anime, she duels Marui in a Shokugeki to determine the fate of Miyazato Seminar and loses 1-2.
- Eyes Out of Sight: Her eyes are never shown because her hair keeps them covered.
- The Voiceless: She hasn't said a word since her introduction.
Shigemichi Kumai

One of the Central recruits, a large, brutish looking student.
- Affectionate Nickname: His name is shortened to "Shige" by his friends.
- The Big Guy: Soma and Takumi note that he's huge and can hardly believe he's a 2nd year high school student.
- Expy: Many have noted his similar design to the Hulk. It's even accentuated by him wearing a green shirt.
- Meaningful Name: In a way. His surname is Kumai, with "kuma" being the Japanese word for bear, and he's certainly got the size, strength and intimidating aura of said animal.
- Only Sane Man: He seems to be the most down to earth and level headed of Central's soldiers so far. When Rentaro tries picking a fight with Soma and Takumi, Shigemichi says he shouldn't do unnecessary things, grabs Rentaro and carries him away, refusing to put him down.
Julio Shiratsu

One of the Central recruits and one of the students who filled the vacant seats of the Council of Ten, obtaining the 8th seat. He is also the son of the famous Shiratsu Family and specializes in Italian cuisine.
- Break the Haughty: Julio's provocations to Satoshi aren't heeded properly until he mocks the Polar Star students, resulting in the latter's rage. Even when Julio delivered his best dish, which received rave reviews from the WGO judges, he still lost to Satoshi, who defeats him by creating a dish composed of ingredients prepared by Satoshi's fellow Polar Star dormmates, the same ones Julio mocked. He has to be carried away while in catatonic bliss after tasting it.
- Foil: He shares a lot in common with Takumi, since both are Half-Italians with a fierce competitive strike against opponents who can't take them seriously as rivals. The main difference is that Takumi slowly gains Soma's respect and friendship, fighting with honor, while Julio is more focused on provoking Isshiki on a personal level.
- Hero-Worshipper: In the anime adaptation, Julio proclaims proudly that his personal hero is the Legendary Alumni Donato Gotouda, modeling his own style like him.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Subverted. His hair is pretty, in contrast to his rough face.
- Retool: Julio Rossi Saotome (from the One-Shot pilot), was used as a base for Julio Shiratsu, since both are half-Italian and spin their utensils.
- Spectacular Spinning: Julio has a flashy trick he calls the "Pepper Mill Rondo" that's just him spinning his Pepper Mills like pinwheels in his hands and serves no purpose other than to impress the crowd. "Rondo" isn't even a term associated with cooking, it's a musical term. However, his habit of spinning things does help him quite a bit when it comes to things like applying wine to meat.
- Supreme Chef: It's worth mentioning that he gained his seat along with Akira and another student by beating the competition in a Battle Royale Shokugeki, beating out even third year students despite being a second year.
- Unknown Rival: He feels a fierce rivalry towards Isshiki, who fails to even remember his name.
Shoko Kaburagi

One of the Central recruits and one of the students who filled the vacant seats of the Council of Ten, obtaining the 5th seat.
- Character Shilling: Urara gives a big hype-rant about Shoko's talent as the new 5th Seat, only to forget that she has no chance at beating Megishima, a former 3rd Seat.
- Eye-Obscuring Hat: She is often wearing a baseball cap that covers her eyes.
- The Quiet One: She hasn't said a word since her introduction.
- Supreme Chef: Much like with Julio and Akira, 2nd year Shoko defeated many opponents, including highly skilled third years in a battle royale to achieve a seat in the Council of Ten. The fact that she obtained the fifth seat also indicates that her skills may well surpass those of the already established Council of Ten members Kinokuni and Eizan. Unfortunately for her, her skills amount to nothing as she ends up facing former 3rd seat Megishima and she's easily defeated.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: The moment her true identity is revealed, Shoko is easily beaten by Megishima without even a challenge. She never gets to talk and the reader never finds out anything about her personality or cooking style.
Normal Students
Kanachi Konishi

A second-year student, president of the Donmono Research Society (Don RS) and, aside from Ikumi, the only member left.
- Abhorrent Admirer: Konishi is something of a fanboy for Ikumi, which just pisses her off or embarrasses her.
- Alliterative Name: Kanachi Konishi.
- Covert Pervert: Even though he is afraid of Ikumi, he can't help but peeking at her bikini or even noting her appeal.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Downplayed. The dude's definitely kind of a goof and while his skills probably aren't good enough to match Ikumi's or Soma's, he's still a second-year student who's already gone through and survived all the challenges Soma and the others are dealing with as freshmen.
- Expressive Hair: When he's excited his pompadour goes up, but when he's depressed, his pompadour goes down.
- A Father to His Men: Given that Ikumi is the only other Don RS member left (and only in it by way of a Shokugeki loss), he constantly fills the Over-Enthusiastic Parents role for her. Ikumi is far from amused by this.
- Hell-Bent for Leather: He firmly believes in this. In a bonus, Ikumi tells Kanachi made her use leather jackets because, as a part of the Don RS, they all must look like bikers.
- Hot-Blooded: Whenever he talks about donburi.
- Improbable Hairstyle: As a Shout-Out to Joe of Tomorrow's Joe (whose iconic pose in death he imitates). In an Omake, Megumi is helping him tape a chunk of hair back after Ikumi angrily cuts it off. In the anime, it's still on his head in episode 7 during the Shokugeki after Ikumi chopped it off in the previous episode.
- Japanese Delinquents: Has the look but not the tough demeanor, but he believes in donburi as a biker's meal.
- Mr. Exposition: He informs Soma on how Erina manages to close clubs she doesn't like and also explains the meaning of the meat rankings.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: Uses a motorbiker jacket instead of the school's blazer.
- Save Our Club: One of Soma's first Shougeki involves saving the Don RS Club from becoming another of Erina's cooking labs. Soma not only succeeds, but also increased the club's budget and gets Ikumi to join it, after most of the members left Kanachi by himself.
- Supporting Leader: He is the president and was the only remaining member of the original club, until Ikumi was forced to join. While he is not technically the best cook at the RS, he is still the most experienced about donburi and provides accurate feedback regarding recipes and research.
- Tears of Joy: Has this moment when Soma recognizes that the club did make many interesting recipes.
- Does this again during the school festival, after learning that the Don RS booth is one of the top sellers.
- Traumatic Haircut: Ikumi chopped off half of his hair after he called her "Nikumi". He is seen with a bandage around the portion that was cut off for a while afterwards.
Tetsuji Kabutoyama

An eleventh-grader and Soma's first Shokugeki opponent after Stagiaire Month.
- Challenge Seeker: He is one of the many who looks forward to challenge Soma, so they can refine their skills.
- Graceful Loser: After Soma defeats him, he accepted the defeat with a smile and agreed to teach him his specialty.
- Red Baron: The "Iron Skewer".
- Sacrificial Lamb: He is the first leader of an RS to lose a Shokugeki and get expelled because the judges are all in on Azami's agenda.
- The Worf Effect: He's the first of Soma's second-year challengers... which means he's also the first to be off-paneled. At the end of Chapter 117, the real focus of the arc comes up as challenges to the Council of Ten begin. Averted with his loss against Eizan, since the latter won via corrupt judges rather than cooking skill.
- Worthy Opponent: He considers Soma to be this, since he already passed the three main events (Training Camp, Autumn Election and Stagiaire Month) that sets him up as a contender. However, he's beaten off-panel in just a few pages, along with all the other challengers.
Kiyoshi Godabayashi

A second-year and president of the sumo-themed Chan RS Club specializing in chankonabe (stew traditionally part of a sumo wrestler diet), which was rendered defunct after losing a Shokugeki against Erina.
- Big "NO!": His club was demolished and he could only scream as it went down.
- Butt-Monkey: He gets defeated twice while trying to defend his RS, and gets tied to a pole in his underwear after he tries to keep his RS meetings in secret, despite this being forbidden by Central.
