Characters / Masquerada: Songs and Shadows

Go To

The characters of Masquerada: Songs and Shadows are divided into factions within the Citte. The factions are as follows:

  • The Registry: The ruling body of government in Ombre. It’s principal duty is negotiating with foreign powers. The Registy is divided into the Portieri, which are the city guard; the Vegilus, which are the scholars of the city, and the Regenti, which are political scientists and economists who inform the registry’s decisions. The Registry also employs the Inspettore, elite agents, diplomats and investigators who answer directly to the Vaorone.
  • The Guilds:
    • Sorelle del Mare: The Blue Guild. Focuses on charity work and helping the helpless.
    • Luca Infinita: The Golden Guild. Their job is to bring justice to those that need it, although their version of justice might not be the same as everyone else’s.
    • Cacciatore: The Green Guild. They protect the natural world. They try to stay out of the politics of the Citte, in part because their main base is outside of the city proper.
    • Dieci Sovrani: The Opal Guild.
    • Labores Solis: The Purple Guild.
    • Altus Nobilis: The Brown Guild.
  • The Songstresses:
  • The Contadani: Muggles who don't have mascherines.
  • The Maskrunners: People with mascherines who are not part of the guild system. Their techinques are less refined since they don't get formal training in using them. Some of them are criminals, but not all.

    The Party

Inspettore Cicero Gavar

Voiced by Matthew Mercer

Cicero is the older brother of Cyrus Gavar, the man who started the War of Bearings by abusing his position as Custodian to steal mascherines from the Registry. Born Contadani (maskless), Cicero climbed the ranks of the Portieri to become an Inspettore (Inspector General). Cicero was tasked with the case that led him to discover his brother’s plot, and chose not to turn him in. After Cyrus’s failed attempt to assassinate the leader of the registry, Cicero was sentenced to exile as punishment.

Five years later, Cicero receives a letter from the Vaorone, offering him enough coin to last the rest of his life if he should return. The Vaorone reinstates Cicero and tasks him with finding Razitof Azrus, a member of the Regenti who had gone missing.

  • The Ace: Cicero is a Maestro, which means he can use any of the three combat styles, and can switch between them mid-fight.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership
  • Character Customization: Downplayed. The only customization is picking which element Cicero wields.
  • The Chosen One: The entirety of the game was a ploy by The Lady to unite Ombre behind him.
  • Disney Death: He dies after getting speared through the chest in the finale, but The Lady revives him.
  • The Exile: He was exiled for letting his brother go instead of arresting him for smuggling mascherines.
  • Hero Harasses Helpers: After The Reveal that Lucia is the Herald and a demonstration of The Lady's power, he decides to sneak off in the middle of the night and confront them alone out of fear of his companions getting hurt.
  • Insists on Paying: He objects to Leventhos offering free board and room at his inn since they're close friends.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Hated by both sides of the War of Bearings for not stopping/supporting his brother's uprising.
  • The Leader
  • Only in It for the Money: He initally only returns to Ombre because Avestus was offering enough money to last a lifetime in exchange for One Last Job.

Mariner Kalden Azrus

Voiced by Rick D. Wasserman
  • Gayngst: He fears being outed since his status plummeting would mean that he'd no longer have custody of the Sailheart and that Razitof would have his song taken off the Singing Tree.
  • Heal It with Water: A Waterbrand and the primary healer of the group.
  • Heartbroken Badass
  • Humble Hero: In the epilogue, he's content in staying with his current lifestyle as opposed to everyone else who became an important figure from the adventure.
  • I Have No Son!: He was disowned by his parents for being gay.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself for a bit, thinking that he essentially killed a Dactite agent who was their only lead on the case.
  • Making a Splash: The resident Waterbrand of the party.
  • Manly Gay: The biggest and strongest guy in the party.
  • The Medic
  • Nice Guy: The nicest guy in the game which makes Cicero all the more suspicious about the secret he's hiding.
  • Orphanage of Love: Manages an orphanage called the Sailheart.
  • Parental Substitute: To the children of the Sailheart.

  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: She openly tells Cicero that she's there to report everything to the Golden Guild, but also that she'll help the investigation to the best of her ability if he's as forthcoming.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: She's sent into the investigation due to the Golden Guild wanting to keep tabs on the Registry's movements.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She openly assaults the Saltbreather after learning about his crimes which gets her chewed out by Vasco for raising his guard and interfering with his own plans to quietly assassinate him.
  • Pen-Pushing President: Before the final battle, she gets promoted to Magistrate and finds herself dealing with significantly more paperwork.

    The Maskrunners
The Maskrunners are split into many different factions, two of which have an impact on the story.

Cyrus Gavar

Voiced by Graham Hamilton

Cicero Gavar’s younger brother. Players take control of him during the prologue. Cyrus worked as the Custodian of the Registry’s cache of maschrines, until he used his position to smuggle mascherines out to the Maskrunners and attempted to assassinate the Vaorone as part of a coup. Cyrus felt very strongly about the plight of his fellow Contadani, and he united the many factions of the Maskrunners in an attempt to change the balance of power in the Citte. His actions began the War of Bearings, which has gone on for five years.

  • Decoy Protagonist: He's the playable character for the prologue and set up as the hero, before getting killed at the end.
