Main

    As a whole
  • La Résistance: They secretly work against the Nazis and sabotage them in any way they can. Leon is open about his disdain for them, while Heinrich works The Mole.
  • Multinational Team: Leon is Austrian, General Guisan is Swiss and Robert is American, whereas the other characters are from different parts of Europe.
    Leonhardt "Leon" Aschenbach

Leonhardt "Leon" Aschenbach (レオンハルト・アッシェンバッハ)

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese), Vincent Ropion (French), Giorgio Bonino/Patrizio Prata (Italian), Muhammad Al-Qabbani (Arabic)

A skilled pianist from Austria. His birthday is August 1, 1923. He opposes the Nazis for killing his parents, who were part of La Résistance. He knew Jeudi from her youth when she went by the name Alicia, and had feelings for her, but she doesn't reciprocate them. He seeks to see the Nazis fall no matter what.

Click here to see him as a child
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Leon had long blonde hair and blue eyes in the manga. In the anime this is changed to purple hair and purple eyes.
  • Anime Hair: His hair is large, volominous and covers his head and a good amount of his body. See here.
  • Assassination Attempt: He is targeted by the Nazis for openly opposing them and inciting rebellion against them, but he doesn't care and continues to oppose them no matter what.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When the Count finds Jeudi in Austria, Leonhardt walks out of his Big Fancy House and tells him to back off. A frightened Jeudi runs behind him and cowers behind his back.
  • Big Fancy House: He lives in one, which is of the eerie, haunted house-ish variant.
  • Bishōnen: Gorgeous, feminine-looking and can pass as a woman despite being obviously male.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He's in love with Jeudi or, as he knew her, Alicia. The two would often play as children in his beautiful rose garden. While she cares for him greatly, she doesn't return his feelings
  • Cry for the Devil: In-universe. When he learns of the Count and Countess' troubled past and witnesses them both burn in the mansion, he mutters "Poor Count Garmont..." as Jeudi and Lundi look at him in surprise. Though this doesn't stop him from opposing the Count in later episodes.
  • Disguised in Drag: In the manga, Leon would take advantage of his Pretty Boy appearance and disguise himself as a woman in public so that he wouldn't be recognized as a celebrity.
  • Distress Ball: Chapter 17 of the manga has Leon as Gourmant's hostage, who has him bound to his chair and a gun against his head.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • His name became Léonard Aschenbach in the French dub.
    • The Italian dub also changes his name to Leonardo Aschenbach.
    • The Arabic dub changes his name to Abd Al-Qader.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: An accomplished pianist. And it plays an important role as it comes out in handy when he uses an anti-Nazi song in his "Austrian symphony" to escape from the Nazis with Jeudi.
  • Famed In-Story: When Martha names great composers from Austria, she mentions Bach, Mozart, Strauss, and Aschenbach.
  • Flower Motif: Roses. His garden is full of them and he presents one to the Count while defending Jeudi. Even as a child in Jeudi/Alicia's flashback, he was surrounded by roses.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: As children, Leonhardt and Jeudi were friends and they often played together, with Leo even gaining a little crush on her. When he met her after several years, he was oblivious to who she was at first. When Printemps draped a makeshift veil over Jeudi and she began playing in his garden, Leonhardt suddenly realizes that she's his long lost childhood friend - and her actual name is "Alicia".
  • Guile Hero: He uses his popularity and charm to fool the Nazis that he's loyal to them, when the truth is that he hates them and wants to see their demise.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Leonhardt has long, cymotrichous, purple hair that reaches past his back.
  • Red Baron: He is known as the "secondcoming of Mozart" amongst the Austrian music scene because of his skills.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Leon is being pressured by Those Wacky Nazis alongside his best friend (and the female lead) Jeudi, and must write an "Austrian Symphony" as well as use it in a concert. What does he do? He accepts to play... but then he uses said concert to actually escape from Austria alongside Jeudi (via turning the lights off in a critical moment and then rushing out with the help of his and Jeudi's entourage) AND give them the musical finger via inserting the melody of an anti-Nazi song (written by Jeudi's Disappeared Dad as the "hymm" of La Résistance) in his "Austrian symphony". And he gets away with it cleanly.
  • Teen Genius: As a teenager, Leonhardt is already a skilled musician and sneaks anti-Nazi messages under their radar.
  • That Man Is Dead: He says this about himself when the Nazis ask him to play at their concert, as he is furious at them for killing his parents.
Leon: "Leonhardt Aschenbach died six years ago!"
  • Tsundere: Type A. He loves Jeudi, but won't admit it.
  • Would Hit a Girl: When Jeudi first enters his estate, he mistakes her for a thief and throws knives at her. When she clarifies who she, he lampshades this trope.
Leon: "Well thank goodness! If you were a thief, you would have been skewered!"
  • You Killed My Father: The Nazis murdered his parents, Eleonora and Franz, because they opposed them and joined Friedrich Brandel's anti-Nazi movement.
    Henri Guisan

Henri Guisan (アンリ・ギザン)

Voiced by: Tōru Ōhira (Japanese), Unknown (French), Antonio Paiola/Riccardo Rovatti (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

A Swiss military General who befriends Jeudi and keeps her safe from the Count.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/henri_5.png
Henri Guisan
  • Chekhov's Gunman: A limousine almost runs Jeudi and little Clara over, but they're safe in the end. Its passenger is Henri, who protects Lundi and Jeudi since he knew a woman whom he thinks she can be Jeudi's Missing Mom. (And she is, in the end.)
  • Cool Old Guy: He's a General who cares about the Swiss people and opposes injustice everywhere, cementing him as this in Jeudi's eyes.
  • Dub Name Change: He became General Karim in the Arabic dub, meaning that he was someone else instead of the Historical Domain Character in-canon.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his first appearance, he nearly hits Clara with his car, but thankfully Jeudi performs a Diving Save to get her out of the way. The General instantly exits his car to make sure Clara's okay, and apologizes to Jeudi and says it was his fault for going too fast. This shows his humility in spite of his prestigous status, and that he is a Friend to All Children.
  • Historical Domain Character: In real life, Henri Guisan was a national hero who prevented Switzerland from falling to the Nazis by mobilizing the military and population against a German invasion.
  • Friend to All Children: He cares greatly about Jeudi and Lundi, and when little Hélène was young, he helped her escape from her home to be with the man she loved.
  • We Used to Be Friends: General Guisan used to be great friends with Jack Dunant, Jeudi's grandfather. One day, Dunant held an Arranged Marrriage between Hélène and Count Garmont of France. Hélène didn't want to marry him, so Guisan helped her escape and live a life with Friedrich. Jack was heartbroken, and never spoke to him again for years.
    Robert Lewis

Robert Lewis (ロバート・ルイス)

Voiced by: Susumu Kotaki (Japanese), (French), Giorgio Bonino/Pasquale Ruiu (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

An American photographer on his way to Poland to take photos of the war, when he meets Lundi and Jeudi. They bond as he also opposes the Nazis.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosalpina_13.png
Robert Lewis
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • The photo he takes of Jeudi on the train. It plays a role in her finding her birth mother.
    • He took a photo of Count Gourmant shooting Hans in the border, which is one of many photos he takes that showcase the Count's true nature.
  • Doomed by Canon: A sidenote says that Robert died in World War II due to a landmine.
  • Happily Married: In the manga, Robert married Madeleine, the two meeting after they joined the Nazi resistance. They later travelled the world together.
  • Intrepid Reporter: He aims to expose Count Gourmant for the cruel man he is, by photographing his acts of brutality and making sure word gets out of his actions.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: He is based on Robert Capa, a Hungarian-American photographer considered by some to be the greatest combat and adventure photographer in history because of the photos he took during World War II.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Like the man he's modelled after, he is tall, dark-haired and good looking.
    Eva Fisher

Eva Fisher

An old friend of Leonhardt and Heinrich's who often sings at Leon's performances.
  • Adapted Out: Didn't appear in the anime.
  • Childhood Friends: She was the Aschenbach's next door neighbour, and knew Leon since they were both children.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Like Heinrich, Eva envied Leon's musical talent. She was a skilled singer in her own right, but nowhere near his level.
    Rudolf Ludendorff

Rudolf Lundendorff (ルドルフ・ルーデンドルフ)

Friedrich's friend and fellow anti-Nazi activist. Ever since Friedrich's accident, he's been caring for him at the hospital.
  • Adapted Out: Neither Rudolf or his wife appeared in the anime.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's a difficult, stubborn guy, but still prioritizes Friedrich's health above everything else.
    Louise

Louise (ルイーズ)

A Jewish girl who lives in Switzerland. She is exiled due to the Nazi policies of expelling Jews.
  • Adapted Out: Didn't appear in the anime.
  • Bitch Slap: She slaps Jean-Jacques and calls him a murderer for killing a prominent anti-Nazi activist.
  • Little Miss Badass: The only time a little girl has walked up to Nazi and slapped him across the face, before telling him exactly what she thought of him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Upon finding out he killed an anti-Nazi activist, she calls Jean-Jacques a murderer and tells him he is going to hell.
  • Token Minority: She is Jewish, making her the anime's only confirmed non-white character.

Aschenbach Family

    As a whole
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Implied. When Jeudi asks Leon how they died, he says he doesn't know how - just that they died in prison.
  • Good Parents: They were very loving parents to Leon, and he became a reculse after their deaths.
  • La Résistance: They despised the Nazis and supported Friedrich Brandel's anti-Nazi resistance. For this, they were arrested and imprisoned.
  • Posthumous Character: They are deceased by the start of the story, but left a large impact on Leon.
  • The Voiceless: Since they're deceased by the time the story starts, Franz and Eleonora don't have any speaking roles
    Franz Aschenbach

Franz Aschenbach (フランツ・アッシェンバッハ)

Leon's father.

Franz Aschenbach
  • Classy Cravat: Sort of. He wore a bow that resembles a cravat and was from a wealthy family.
  • In the Blood: Like his son, he was a musician, and one who opposed Nazis.
    Eleonora Aschenbach

Eleonora Aschenbach (エレオノーラ・アッシェンバッハ)

Leon's mother.

Brandel Family

    As a whole
  • Heroic Lineage: To Jeudi. Both of them heavily opposed the Nazi rise of Europe and when Hélène was engaged to a Nazi, she was disgusted and ran away from him. They took part in anti-Nazi movements across Europe and fought against them until they either died or were left disabled.
  • La Résistance: Both Friedrich and Hélène opposed the Nazis and wanted a future where they had no power, with Friedrich even joining the military to fight them.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Hélène crawls towards Toulonchamp in the middle of his Hostage Situation, holds on his leg while he's holding Jeudi at knife point, distracting him enough to let Lundi pounce on him and sett Jeudi free.
    • Friederich Brandel composing Alpine Rose. Not only did it double as a symbol of La Résistance, but it was his biggest token of love for Hélène as they became Star-Crossed Lovers. Jeudi sang it to prove her identity to Hélène undid all of Toulonchamp's plans in regards to the Dunants, and before that it was one of Jeudi's few memories about her own past as well.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Hélène and Friederich were once married and had a child, but then her mother separated the two of them.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both of them have blonde hair and green eyes, just like Jeudi. Jeudi looks so much like Hélène that the bitler of the Dunants, who served the Dunant family for many years, nearly spills his tea when seeing her.
    Hélène Brandel

Hélène Brandel (née Dunant) (エレーヌ・ブレンデル)

Voiced by: Tomoko Munakata (Japanese), Monique Thierry (French), Elda Olivieri/Valeria Falcinelli (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

A skilled pianist and the firstborn daughter of the wealthy Dunant family. She was born in 1904 in Vaud, Switzerland. She was engaged to Count Gourmant, but didn't love him and eventually married Friedrich Brandel, with who she had a daughter, Alicia. When Hélène was 28, her and Alicia were flying in a plane that crashed, leading them to become separated. Hélène was retrieved by the Dunant family, while Alicia was discovered by a Swiss family and given a new name - Jeudi.

She currently lives at the Dunant house, but has lost her vision.

Hélène Dunant
  • Awful Truth: After Hélène's blinded, her mother involves Michel Toulonchamp in a scheme to pretend that his daughter, Mathilda, is Alicia and the two are slowly killing her against her knowledge.
  • Blind Musician: She was a skilled pianist in her youth, before she turned blind as the result of an accident.
  • Calling the Old Woman Out: Hélène is very angry at her mother when she confronts her on the deals with Toulonchamp, and specially on how they separated her from Friederich and Jeudi.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She's the woman who rejected Gourmant's love in the past. And Gourmant later finds her daughter Alicia/Jeudi and also chases after her, specifically because she looks like Hélène (though he won't know who she really is until much later.)
  • Broken Bird: The plane crash took her sight from her, and her lover died at war. When we finally meet her in person, she's bed-ridden and quiet, not to mention with her health in complete tatters...
  • Delicate and Sickly: Hélène has a weak heart and almost non-existent eyesight. What makes this worse is that Mathilda and her father have been slowly poisoning her for a long time, so they keep her physically weakened enough to mantain the masquerade.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: When Jeudi is at the Dunants, Printemps encounters Hélène and tries to encourage her to walk. Hélène is blind, so she has to clutch the wall for support. While doing so, Michel Toulonchamp happens to be going on about his plans with the Dunants, and Hélène is shocked to find out about his true intentions.
  • Generation Xerox: Hélène and Jeudi are almost identical in both looks and personality, the former being why the Count repeatedly pursues her.
  • Pink Is Feminine: She wears a pretty light pink gown, like her daughter.
  • Missing Mom: She's Jeudi's mother, but doesn't recognize Jeudi at first because she's been blinded.
  • Runaway Bride: Hélène refused to marry Count Gourmant like the Dunats had hoped, and ran away to be with Friedrich.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: After the Awful Truth comes out, Hélène is furious and declares her hatred for Michel.
" Michel Toulonchamp, that man... I will never forgive him!"
    Freidrich Brandel

Friederich Brandel (フリードリヒ・ブレンデル)

Voiced by: Shuusei Nakamura (Japanese), Jean-Pierre Delage (French), Federico Danti (Italian), Hussein Abu Hamad (Arabic)

A politician from Vienna who opposes the Nazis. He was born in Vienna in 1902. He is also a skilled composer and composed the song Alpen Rose as a farewell message for his wife, Hélène. With the Nazis taking over more and more parts of Europe, Friedrich eventually joined the army and fought on the Polish front.
  • Action Dad: He's Jeudi's father, and he fought against the Nazis in Poland. If that's not badass enough, he also survived the plane crash that Jeudi and Hélène were in.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Alpen Rose song he composed plays a role in Jeudi's reunification with Hélène and exposing Trounchamp's lies
  • Despair Event Horizon: After the plane accident, he would always go to the Dunant house and ask to see Hélène, but Jacques and the Tronchamps would bar him every time. When he believed that he would never be able to see her again, he was so full of grief he went to the Polish front to die.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Jeudi, but it wasn't his fault. He was separated by her thanks to a plane accident, and the Dunants refused to tell him the truth about her.
  • Doting Parent: He loved Jeudi with all his heart, and taught her how to waltz. They finally reunite when he's in the hospital for his injuries, but he sadly dies the next day.
  • Landmine Goes Click: How he and his friends die in Poland. Though Friedrich was abe to hang on for a little while longer before succumbing to his injuries.

Strasser Family

    As a whole
  • Adapted Out: Didn't appear in the anime, though Louise's silhouette was seen in the sixteenth episode.
  • La Résistance: Theodor and Louise opposed the Nazis, which makes Jean-Jacques' loyalty to them deeply ironic.

    Theodor Strasser

Theodor Strasser (テオドール・シュトラッサー)

Alfred's father. A novelist and an anti-Nazi activist. He is 15 years older than Louise.
  • Happily Married: He eventually finds a blooming, peaceful wedded life with Marie.
  • Only Sane Man: He was shocked at his wife for stealing Jean-Jacques from the Courtots (and renaming him Alfred), and eventually left her when she began acting more mentally ill.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: His wife was a heavily abusive nutjob, and his "son" (who was actually kidnapped from the hospital) displayed signs of sociopathy and violence at a young age. As a result, he left Switzerland for France and never looked back.
    Louise Strasser

Louise Strasser (ルイーズ・シュトラッサー)

Alfred's mother. She suffered from unknown mental issues all her life.
  • Abusive Parents: She viewed Alfred as more than a son, to put it lightly. When he called her "mom", she insisted he call her Louise, and would also become uncomfortably close to him.
  • Adaptational Name Change: The anime changed her name to Emma Strasser in Alfred's flashback.
  • Driven to Suicide: After she was forced to have Sex for Services an with SS Officer, her mental illness became worse and she threw herself in a lake.
  • First-Name Basis: She always insisted that Alfred call her Louise and refused to let him call her "mom".
Louise: "When you call me 'Mom', I feel 10 years older!"
  • Sex for Services: Officer Ludwig forces Louise to provide sexual favours for him to protect Theodor. It ended up ruining her already fragile mental state even further.
    Marie Strasser

Marie Strasser (マリー・シュトラッサー)

Theodore's second wife, who he lives with in France.
