Profile:
Blood type: A
Height: 173cm
The protagonist of HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL. His default name is Belial, while his default nickname is Bel, but both can be changed at the start of the game.

A young man coming from a closed-off village in order to start his life as an adult in the capital. While he starts as a trainee of the Cleanup Department, Belial got in an arranged marriage with the next lead of the mage family Alternata, which should promote him to the Magic Department after a week. He's lively, a bit rebellious and rather hot-blooded.

Since he came to the temple, Belial has frequent dreams featuring an angel surrounded by gore, blood and guts, who usually comes to rescue him from his nightmare.

Cleanup Department

    General tropes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dept_purification.png
The Cleanup Department of Saint Sheol. Having been etablished three years ago by the current cardinal, it's a department unique to the temple.
  • Dub Name Change: from Purification Department (浄化部) to Cleanup Department. Granted, the 浄化 part of its Japanese name can mean both purification and cleanup.

    Maya Elbeth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_maya.png
"Confusion"
Profile:
Blood type: B
Height: 144cm
Favourite animal: goat

A girl Belial meets in the train on his way to Saint Sheol. She's a fellow new rookie like him. Timid and unsure of herself, she doesn't react well to how harsh her new job is. As a way to relieve stress, Maya often spends time in the Flower Garden tending on flowers and plants.

Oddly enough, an angel bearing her face always appears in Belial's nightmares...

While she's the default heroine of the original game, she takes on the protagonist role in the spin-off HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL ~Mouja Shoujo Maya~.

  • Girlish Pigtails: Maya wears her hair in two short twintails.
  • Hellish Pupils: her pupils are rectangular, like a goat's, and her eyes are also orange.
  • The Klutz: already clumsy by default, this trait of hers gets worse with the rude conditions of her job as a member of the Cleanup Department.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: the Elbeth family is composed of a couple, who adopted ten children. They then send them off to work to the temple once they reach adulthood. Maya is the youngest of them.
  • Nature Lover: Maya loves plants, flowers, and animals (including bugs), hence why she's often found in the flower garden.
  • Shrinking Violet : Maya ticks pratically every box out of this trope.
  • Winged Humanoid: how she appears in Belial's nightmares. In reality, her two Stigmatas are on her back - located where her angel wings should be.
  • Zettai Ryouiki : wears white thigh-highs.
    Securett Rafe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_securett.png
Profile:
Blood type: O
Height: 154cm

A senior member of the Cleanup Department, who acts as Belial's and Maya's mentor, and additionally the temporary auxiliary bishop of the Cleanup Department.

He's completely devoted to his job, but his attiude with other people is absolutely terrible.

  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: due to his short stature, slim build, having an high-pitched voice as if he didn't reach puberty (despite being implied to be at least 19 years old), and being described as having wrists as slender as Maya's, Belial even wonders if he's a man in the first place.
  • Jerkass: his behavior with others usually ranges from being simply condescending to outright rude. It's not a surprise to see that he's not liked by anyone in the Department (with the exception of Maya, despite his cold treatment towards her, and Haku).
  • Pointless Bandaid : has two band-aids on his face, and several others on his legs. Though they might not be exactly pointless, judging by how he's said to being prone to injure himself often.
  • Undying Loyalty: towards Haku, even if other priests always assume he hates her guts. He's actually incredibly devoted to her, and helps her daily with various tasks, such as paperwork, bringing her meals, waking her up, or tying her hair.
  • Workaholic: tends to sacrifice his social life for the sake of being efficient at his job. Not that he seems to especially care about having friends either, though.

    Haku Eckaran
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_haku1.png
"Secret"
Profile:
Blood type: AB
Height: 177cm
Favourite place: outdoor chapel

The mystical bishop of the Cleanup Department. Her airheaded and relaxed personality, coupled with her slow manner of speaking and walking, tend to confuse others.

Her behavior seem to change drastically at night however, being more bright, blunt and rude.

  • Church Lady: noticeably more prone to focus on religion than other characters.
  • Duality Motif: Haku's eyes are usually yellow, with a hint of blue at the top. This changes at night, where they become completely blue.
  • Eye Colour Change: from yellow, to light blue.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: although it's subtle, her pupils are diamond-shaped.
  • The Fool: has shades of this, thanks to her airheaded nature. This questions her independance, both as a person and a bishop...
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Belial takes a rather long time to notice Haku's gender. She's described as being fairly androgynous thanks to her tall height, low tone of voice and sharp features, and her attire has been designed with both priest and nun clothes in mind in order to give her a neutral image, according to the artbook.
  • Mystical White Hair: has pure white hair, which is described as almost glowing in the dark. In-universe, this lack of pigment in one's hair signifies a certain lack in sacred power.
  • Too Many Belts: wears one around the waist, two small belts on each arms, and has another hanging around her skirt.

     Other priests

Chairwoman & Blondie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot0005_6.png
Two senior priests of the Cleanup Department who Belial encounters early on.
  • Gossipy Hens: like many priests in the Cleanup Department, they love hearing and spreading rumors.
  • No Name Given: as Belial struggles to understand the accent used in the capital at first, he doesn't register their names, and thus refers to them with nicknames instead.

Chairwoman

One of Maya's many half-siblings. Short-tempered and a fan of gossiping about others.
  • Brainy Brunette: seemingly, as Maya mentions that she's been trying to get into the Academics Department (... without success).
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: she doesn't react well to Blondie's death at all.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: it's rare for her to not be raving and ranting about something, but bringing up Securett seem to especially rile her up.

Blondie

Chairwoman's friend. Chatty but rather lazy, she takes an interest in Belial quickly.
  • Alpha Bitch: of the passive-aggressive variant.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: has red eyes, a rather mischevious attitude, and she rapes Belial during his second night at the temple. She gets executed as a consequence of the latter.

Magic Department

     General tropes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dept_magic.png

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: a poster example for this trope.
  • Blue Is Calm: Arne has dark blue eyes, and never loses her composure.
  • Cool Big Sis: for Enoch.
  • Extreme Doormat: Arne always does what she's told to, without complaining, and tends to apologize for things that aren't even her fault. Her dutiful nature is so strong that it can get overbearing or annoying to others, yet she remains grounded constantly and doesn't seem to suffer from self-worth issues.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: her attire features a lot of gold and white (along with black), though she isn't a deity. It does reflects her high levels of sacred powers, however.
  • Iron Lady: as the next lead of the Alternata family, Arne fits this trope very well.

    Enoch Apis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_enoch.png
Profile:
Blood type: A
Height: 188cm

The second auxiliary bishop of the Magic Department, and Arne's younger adopted brother. He's often seen at her side, and his affection towards her may seem stronger than a typical sibling bond... However, he wants the best for her, and constantly tries his best to be of help.

He additionally is a well-known figure in the temple thanks to his friendly and outgoing personality.

  • Bad Liar: he's not very good at fighting back against accusations of him having feelings for Arne.
  • Big Sister Worship: towards Arne. Enoch loves his older sister dearly and will fight back if you dare criticizing her. This enters Big Sister Attraction levels of worship more often than not.
  • Nice Guy: helpful and kindheartred to anyone, and rather humble.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Enoch is the tallest character in the cast, and has dark hair. While his personality isn't the one usually associated with this trope, he's quite popular in-universe for his good looks.
  • Tsurime Eyes: actually more sanpaku than tsurime, as his eyes are very thin.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_erzsebet.png

Height: 127cm

The haughty bishop of the Magic Department, and a very powerful mage. He's the one who invited Belial to join the temple and got him into an arranged marriage with Arne, his niece. This makes him the current lead of the House of Alternata.

Don't let his looks fool you - he actually turned forty-five this year.

  • Older Than They Look: apparently sacrified his physical growth for the sake of his incredibly high levels of sacred power.
  • Power Floats: Erzsebet is able to float in the air at will.
  • Royal Brat: his youngful appearance and arrogant personality makes him pass as this. He's however technically not a part of royalty (though his status as a mage can be seen as similar), and his appearance doesn't reflect his real age.
  • Waistcoat of Style: wears a grey waistcoat under his coat.

Academics Department

    General tropes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dept_academic.png

Height: 160cm
Favourite book: Rapunzel

The auxiliary bishop of the Academics Department. Lavieen is a priest with many different skills, however, she suffers from a condition caused by the Pestis, making her enter a state of sleepwalking at random moments. When she sleepwalks, she goes by the name Rose, acts in a robotic, emotionless manner, and never leaves her room in the Library. When she's awake, Lavieen is cheerful, talkative and wise, and often wanders around the temple to fix broken machinery.

And yes, her name is an obvious reference to the popular french song/saying La Vie En Rose.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_evelynn.png
Profile:
Blood type: AB
Height: 168cm
Holiday hobbies: staring

The strange bishop of the Academics Department, and a librarian. Evelynn often brews perfume with flowers herself, and tends to scare off people with her eccentric personality...

That is, when she's not attracting them (though that might be as well due thanks to her perfumes' proprieties).

Health Department

    General tropes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dept_health.png

There's some rumors that he has a relationship with Grette going around the temple...

  • Badass Longcoat
  • Must Have Nicotine: judging by how he always has the scent of cigarettes on him, and is even described as "an anthropomorphic ashtray" by Belial, Gregor likely has a problem with smoking.
  • Stoic Spectacles: wears half-rim glasses, and is indeed quite stoic.

She's a talkative young girl who likes listening to rumors and learning new things, though her curiosity can be slightly overbearing at times.
