Characters from Golden Boy.
Major Characters
Kintaro Oe
Voiced by: Doug Smith (English), Mitsuo Iwata (Japanese)
The series protagonist. A 25-year-old young man who's as talented as he is perverted. Despite his raging libido frequently getting the better of him, his true passion is learning, studying, and taking notes. He withdrew from Tokyo University, despite completing the requirements for graduation. Ever since then, he's traveled throughout Japan seeking new challenges to test his knowledge, and maybe meeting some lovely ladies along the way.
- All-Loving Hero: Even if he is a pervert, you won't find a more sensitive and kind-hearted anime guy outside Rurouni Kenshin or Fist of the North Star.
- Almighty Janitor: And he loves cleaning toilets, too.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Whether its protecting those he cares about or even having his notebook ripped to shreds, pissing Kintaro off is not a good idea.
- Chekhov's Skill: In the 4th chapter of the manga and its corresponding anime episode, Kintaro learns to swim to beat Ayuko Hayami, a female Olympic level swimmer. 30 chapters later he becomes The Ace on a girl's high school swimming team (see Wholesome Crossdresser below), finishing 1st for a regional championship.
- Chick Magnet: Kintaro, combined with being a Clueless Chick-Magnet, as, despite relentlessly pursuing the girls who end up falling for him, he often ends up leaving town before they can get with him. Played more straight in the manga where he does get with some of them.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Kintaro's libido is through the roof most of the time, and he keeps getting caught up in erotic daydreams at the slightest provocation, but he genuinely makes an effort not to be a complete perv at times. And he always puts his love interests' well-being and happiness before himself.
- Cloudcuckoolander: This guy is a loud, spirited, and clumsy goofball who often fantasizes about most of the women he meets, and his roulette of wild facial expressions makes him look even more ridiculous.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Fits this guy to a T. When he's not acting on perverted impulses (which ends up being most of the women's first impression of him), you can bet that he's doing something pretty amazing (usually out of the eye of both the women and the audience). He is also trained in Kenpo karate.
- The Electric Slide: Kintaro invokes this trope to win a race against a motorcycle.
- Forgot I Couldn't Swim: Played for Laughs when Kintaro tries to show his swimming technique while applying to be a swim coach. Michael Phelps or Haruka Nanase, he most certainly is not.
- Friend to All Children: Kintaro is great with kids, as shown when he encourages fun ways for them to learn when he becomes a swimming instructor in episode 4.
- Genius Ditz: Kintaro always acts like an idiot for most of the episode, before amazing the woman he was chasing (as well as the audience).
- Martial Pacifist: Kintaro has Kenpo training, but he only reveals it once, after getting beaten up several times.
- He uses his combat skills several times in the manga, but only to defend others. He even attacks a woman in one volume of the manga to save a Yakuza (who had been beating him up, no less) from her. Most times he prefers to use pressure points to incapacitate people and get away instead of opening up an all-out can of whoop ass.
- Meaningful Name: "Kintaro" actually does mean "Golden Boy"; he is loosely based on a character from Japanese folklore.
- No Indoor Voice: Kintaro is very loud, and Doug Smith's English portrayal of him only amplifies this.
- Raging Stiffie: Kintaro gets several throughout the course of the series.
- Walking the Earth: Condensed to walking just in Japan, but the principle is the same.
- Wholesome Crossdresser: Kintaro spends most of volumes 4 and 5 of the manga pretending to be a 17-year-old highschool girl, earning the love of many men and women.
- Wild Take: Like Honmaru before him, Kintaro's over-exaggerated facial expressions when he's freaked out or in shock are the stuff of legends.
Madame President
Voiced by: Tiffany Grant (English), Hiromi Tsuru (Japanese)
A strong-minded, independent and intelligent woman who owns an all-female computer software company. She wears expensive, sexy (and revealing) clothes. She does not believe in showing sincerity to men, because of their true intentions. Kintaro is the first man to work in her office.
- Cool Car: Drives a Ferrari (which later comes in useful at the end of Episode 6).
- Does Not Like Men: No men are seen working at her company, and she reacts with disgust when Kintaro taps her on the shoulder.
- Navel-Deep Neckline: Her outfit has a plunging neckline that reaches her midriff.
- No Name Given: Her real name is never given, emphasizing her status as a High-Powered Career Woman.
- The Tease: As she warms up to Kintaro, she really enjoys teasing him.
Naoko Katsuda
Voiced by: Allison Keith (English), Yuko Minaguchi (Japanese)
The daughter of a powerful local politician who has employed Kintaro as part of his campaign team. Because of her father's overprotective nature and reputation, she has lived most of her life in his shadow, which has resulted in her developing unhealthy personal issues.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She acts like a sweet, ditzy girl but underneath is a conniving woman with severe Daddy Issues.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Apparently, a boy who stole Naoko's panties in high school was never seen again (or, in a henchman's words, took a "swim in the river with concrete galoshes."
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: She loses it big time when she finds out Kintaro was never fooled by her act and just went along with it because he feels sorry for her.
- Heel Realization: Realizes her wrongdoing and confesses, but not before Kintaro has been pummeled almost beyond recognition by her father's henchmen.
- The Tease: Her entire schtick. Unfortunately for her, Kintaro saw right through her act and in fact thought she was an amateur.
- Those Two Girls: When she's not with Kintaro, she's usually seen with her friend Yuka (who also shows up when Naoko returns in Episode 6).
- Villainous BSoD: When she finds out that Kintaro knew she was only messing with him, let's just say she doesn't take it well.
Noriko
Voiced by: Kim Sevier (English), Yuri Shiratori (Japanese)
A sweet, kind girl who works at a noodle shop owned by her parents. She is frequently visited by rich businessman Hiroshi Kogure (actually a gangster in disguise) who she begins to develop feelings for. Unfortunately for her, Kogure only plans to marry her in order to gain the deed to her parents' land and restaurant...
- Cannot Spit It Out: Out of all the heroines, she actually comes the closest to confessing to Kintaro by the end of the episode. However, Kintaro gently changes the subject to avoid embarrassing her.
- Feminine Women Can Cook: A textbook example.
- Flower Motifs: She likes to prepare flower bouquets, alluding to her pure and innocent nature.
- The Ingenue: Very inexperienced in matters of love and sex. It's implied Kogure is her first relationship, hence her falling for him so quickly and not suspecting anything about him.
- It's worth nothing that Kintaro is also never perverted in regards to her and is solely concerned with her well-being, not even engaging in his usual Toilet Fetish during the episode.
Ayuko Hayami
Voiced by: Sue Ulu (English), Kikuko Inoue (Japanese)
A former Olympic gold medalist and swimming instructor that runs her own swimming school. Very dominant and disciplined, her methods of teaching swimming are less than pleasant.
- Ambiguously Brown: Her skin is noticeably darker than the rest of the Japanese cast. A flashback to her childhood shows that it’s not just a tan either.
- Animal Motifs: Kintaro compares her to a "lion on the savannah".
- Boyish Short Hair: Alluding to her Tomboy nature (it's also likely more effective for swimming).
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: Her method of teaching swimming lessons. Her instructors are told to fail any students if they fail to meet her strict demands.
- Heel Realization: A parent comes to thank her for her child's marked improvement in swimming. The child asks where "Coach Kintaro" is, leading her to realize his methods as more effective for teaching swimming, despite having decades more experience than him.
- Megaton Punch: Knocks Kintaro out for desecrating the "sanctity of the pool".
- Sadist Teacher: Not openly sadistic, but her teaching methods are more than questionable, particularly when it comes to children (such as forcibly submerging their heads). She also runs her older students extremely hard.
- Tsurime Eyes: Highlighting her strong-willed nature.
- Wakeup Makeup: In her very first scene, she wears makeup on her way to work at her pool. Maybe she knows something we don’t, because it’s repeatedly shown to be intact right after she emerges from the water.
Reiko Terayama
Voiced by: Laura Chapman (English), Sakiko Tamagawa (Japanese)
The daughter of one of the richest men in Kyoto. In public, Reiko is beautiful, elegant and well-mannered. In private, she is a biker who has an unhealthy obsession with her Bimota Tesi 1D motorbike, which she calls "Bimo" for short.
- Auto Erotica: Played With - she uses her bike to masturbate.
- Best Her to Bed Her: She tells Kintaro that if he can beat her in a race, he can have sex with her. Naturally, both she and the audience think he has no chance of winning... but in a hilarious subversion of this trope, he actually does earn the right to sleep with her but doesn't get the chance to because his bike's brakes go kaput.
- Does Not Like Men: Like Madame President, she disdains men and instead prefers the company of her motorcycle, even using it to satisfy her... womanly needs.
- Navel-Deep Neckline: She unzips her biker outfit all the way down to her stomach.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: What she appears to be...but in reality is a thrill-seeking Badass Biker.
Chie
Voiced by: Yvonne Aguirre (English), Mika Kanai (Japanese)
An anime-only character, Chie is a cel-painter at the animation studio where Kintaro works as an errand boy.
- The Cutie: Like Noriko, she is a sweet, good-natured girl.
- Did Not Get The Guy: At the end of the episode, she declines to chase after Kintaro with the other girls, vowing she'll see him again someday.
- The Ditz: Not overtly ditzy - she is a talented artist after all - but subtly implied by the fact that she can never seem to remember Kintaro's name correctly.
- She does show responsibility in declining to pursue Kintaro at the end, however, saying that she can't neglect her work duties.
- Flat Character: She doesn't really get a lot in the way of Character Development since the episode is mostly focused on Kintaro Putting the Band Back Together to save the animation studio. However, she is shown to be a kind, caring girl who falls for Kintaro by the end of the episode, just like all the other heroines.
- Tareme Eyes: Complementing her kind nature.
