"I'll work hard to become a witch who can make everyone smile. Because to me, magic is the most wonderful thing in the entire world!"

The protagonist of the franchise. Akko is a bubbly young girl from Japan who aspires to become a witch after watching one of Shiny Chariot's performances. She's generally reckless and willing to take risks and has no experience with, nor knowledge of magic, which, combined with her hot-blooded and lazy nature, makes her a rather unpopular student amongst her peers and her teachers.

In spite of these flaws and setbacks however, she is a kind and passionate girl who cares deeply about her friends and is determined to make her dreams come true, not willing to let anyone or anything stop her.

"I used to get laughed at by the other witches, you know? But when I sang a magical song, the faerie spirits would create a rainbow for me. It was always amazing and beautiful."
Akko's best friend and roommate from Finland. She tends to be rather quiet and bookish compared to her more loud and abrasive friends, which makes her come off as being a bit invisible at times, but she is a kind-hearted girl who is very loyal to her friends. She has the unique ablity to summon spirits from numerous objects, which allows her to commuicate with them. She is also a passionate Night Fall fangirl.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: She likes Edgar's dark and secretive nature in the Night Fall books.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: During her childhood, the other children made fun of her for coming from a family of witches.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Subverted — she is offered the chance to become the next Night Fall author but rejects it because then she would always be spoiled on the story and have nothing to look forward to.
  • Badass Adorable: Probably one of the cutest witch that you'll ever seen, Her glasses and shy personality also helps her being cute. She sometimes faces monsters with her magical powers, alongside with Akko & Sucy.
  • Berserk Button: If someone insults her friends, Lotte will make sure that they regret it.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: She always wears glasses, and it's easy to notice how cute she is with it.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Has solid pale blue dots for eyes. But without her glasses, her eyes are like everyone else's.
  • Cute Bookworm: Very bookish and downright adorable for it.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The redhead to Sucy's blonde and Akko's brunette.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She carries around a lantern shaped like a skull, but it's a family heirloom that helps her summon fairies.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the second cour, although unlike Sucy, she gets A Day in the Limelight episode.
  • Dude Magnet: When the Lovelove Bee was doing its thing, it just so happened to sting all four members of Andrew's posse, and Lotte just so happened to be the first girl they laid their eyes on. Subverted when the bee's magic wears off, though Frank still found her attractive, and even asked her on a date.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Offering Akko a ride to Luna Nova after some reluctance, which establishes her as kind and willing to reach out to those in need.
  • Eye Glasses: Her eyes fill up her whole glasses frame.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Akko and Sucy. This is especially true concerning the former. So much so that in "Yesterday", Lotte is brought to tears by the thought of Akko leaving, completely adrift without her.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inverted. Unlike her fellow red-headed friend Amanda, Lotte is a fairly even-tempered gal with orange hair.
  • Good Is Boring: She admits this is the reason she tolerates and even admires Akko's occasional Jerkass Ball, as she knows she's too even-tempered to ever really achieve anything memorable whereas Akko's passion can drive her to greatness.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Lotte kept her hairstyle the same from her youth.
  • The Heart: She's the emotional center of the main trio thanks to her empathy and kindness.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Lotte has blue eyes and is the nicest between her, Sucy, and Akko.
  • Just Friends: Invoked by Lotte in regards to her and Frank, as she finds the idea of suddenly dating someone she barely knows to be weird and wants to start by being friends with him first.
  • The Kirk: To Akko's McCoy and Sucy's Spock. Despite being easily the most empathetic and selfless, she's as well the most levelheaded and balanced individual among them, with Akko being kind of a hothead and Sucy often being a stoic, apathetic jerk.
  • Losing the Team Spirit: After Akko pushes her buttons one too many times, and snaps at her before becoming sullen and decided to leave the Happy Time Project.
  • Meaningful Name: "Lotte" might be a short form of "Liselotte" or "Annelotte" meaning "Gracious" or "sweet", two traits that match Lotte. It can also be a short form of "Charlotte", which is a feminine French form of "Charles", which means "man" or "warrior"; however, this name is of Germanic origin, making it unlikely to refer to Lotte, who is Scandinavian.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Her family name is a reference to Tove Jansson, the Finnish-Swedish creator of The Moomins. Jansson is actually a pretty common Swedish surname, but "Pohjola's Ordeal", Lotte's Day in the Limelight episode, is chock full of Moomin Shout Outs, which makes it clear that naming her after Tove Jansson was intentional.
  • Nice Girl: While a bit shy, she's a very sweet, selfless and kind girl, and the most even-tempered in the main trio.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Is the nice one amongst the main trio, as she’s quiet, mild-mannered and gentle compared to her more abrasive teammates.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Akko rips up the sheet music to Lotte's ancestral song, Lotte gets so frustrated that she blows up in Akko's face, telling her to Get Out! of her room. The next time they meet up, Lotte is gloomy and more prone to speak her mind. Sucy lampshades the change after the first confrontation.
  • Out of Focus: Lotte ends up suffering this along with Sucy during the second cour of the series. The second cour of the series ends up focusing on Akko's quest to revive the Seven Enchanted Words, the backstory of Shiny Chariot, the introduction of Professor Croix, and characters like Diana, Amanda, and Constanze getting spotlight episodes. So Lotte and Sucy ended up finding themselves pushed more to the background.
  • Photographic Memory: At least in regards to the Night Fall series, a 365-volume epic which she seems to have completely memorized, down to random 10-digit numbers and chemical formulas. The only question in the associated quiz-show that takes her more than a millisecond to answer is "what is the species of the third flower in the botanical garden in the town of the author's mother's piano teacher's husband's father's favorite bakery?"
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Her glasses shine whenever she becomes angry or upset.
  • Ship Tease: The series hints that Frank likes her, and she appears to be considering him.
  • Shipper on Deck: She and Sucy jokingly shipped Akko with Andrew
  • Shrinking Violet: Lotte is known to be shy and timid at times.
  • Shout-Out: With her red hair and freckles, she looks like she could be a member of the Weasley family. It helps that she is the main character's best friend like Ron is to Harry.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: While she wanted to start as friends with Frank, she did say that it's because she wants to take things slow before thinking about committing to a relationship. Lucky for Frank, as a Nice Guy who showed genuine attraction to her, dude has a pretty decent shot in the long term.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her surname is occasionally translated as "Yanson". Regardless of which one the creators intended, "Jansson" is the correct Swedish spelling.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: "Pohjola's Ordeal" shows that Lotte gets her physical looks from her mother, while she inherited her eye and hair color from her father.
  • Summon Magic: Her bread and butter are summoning fairies.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Lotte wears a purple headband.
  • Token Good Teammate: Make no mistake, the main trio are all good-hearted individuals, but she's the good-natured straitght-up Nice Girl compared to her two more abrasive friends, Sucy and Akko.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Downplayed, but she interprets Edgar's advances on Belle as an attempt to get Arthur's attention.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has freckles on her face, giving her a young and innocent look.

    Sucy Manbavaran

Voiced by: Michiyo Murase (Japanese), Rachelle Heger (English), Anastasia Muñoz (English; Space Patrol Luluco)Other Languages

Appearances: Little Witch Academia | The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sucy_7.png

"Could you be any more of a pain in the neck?"
A dark, creepy pale girl from Southeast Asia with a huge love for mushrooms and potions, especially poisons. She and Akko butt heads frequently often and the former especially loves to subject the latter to her experiments (much to the latter's distaste), but they are also good friends who care deeply about each other. She is also Lotte and Akko's roommate.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Not like she was the kindest person to start with, but Sucy is much more cruel toward and exploitative to Akko and Lotte in the series than in the films, even using them as bait for a cockatrice in "A New Beginning" just to get a feather from it. She's still a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who cares deeply about her friends, but it's more subtle compared to the films.
  • Ambiguously Gay: When Akko is about to kiss Sucy awake inside her mindscape, Dragon!Sucy (which is made up of all of her stray thoughts and inner desires) gets hearts in its eyes and becomes very sad when the Original Sucy denies Akko the kiss. It should also be noted that out of the main trio, Sucy is the only one who doesn't get Ship Tease with male characters. She also expressed no interest in any guys in "Bee Affection", unlike Akko and Lotte.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The blonde (purple hair) to Akko's brunette and Lotte's redhead.
  • Brutal Honesty: She tells everyone exactly what's on her mind and exactly how she sees things. In particular, she showed no restraint in telling Akko that she's not really being the best of friends to Lotte.
  • The Cameo: Makes an extended cameo in "The Mysterious Power's Trap" of Space Patrol Luluco.
  • Creepy Child: With her pale skin, deadpan expression and voice, and interests that most people would find disturbing, she clearly gives off this vibe.
  • Creepy Monotone: She speaks in a morose and raspy monotone, which adds to her generally unsettling nature.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Sucy has some pretty visible dark circles under her eyes, further enhancing her creepy demeanor.
  • Custom Uniform: As you can see, the length of her dress extends all the way past the floor. She's the only character seen wearing this type of uniform.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Sucy can be a rather dark and creepy individual and she loves subjecting her friends (especially Akko) to her experiments and to cause mischief in general, but she is a caring and good-hearted person at the end of the day.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prone to making witty remarks while wearing the exact same emotionless and gloomy expression.
  • Demoted to Extra: Hit brutally with this in the latter half of the series. While Lotte at least gets a few bits of a spotlight, Sucy's lucky to even get more than a few lines per episode.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her introduction in the anime has her using her potions against Akko, such as bringing a bird doll to life to peck her eye and turn ropes into snakes. She does this while not saying anything and maintaining a straight face, cementing her status as a stoic but mischievous prankster.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: From Southeast Asia and is studying at Britain-based Luna Nova.
  • The Gadfly: In "Bee Affection", she releases a "Lovelove Bee", which causes people to fall in love. She says she just wanted to mess with Akko.
  • Goth: An aloof, sarcastic girl who is notably the only one amongst her friends drawn with makeup, with an interest in creepy things that disgust the rest of her classmates.
  • Goth Girls Know Magic: A creepy, aloof girl attending a European school for witches-in-training and an expert in magical poisons.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Discussed and Played for Laughs in "Akko's Adventure in Sucyworld", which shows Sucy as having a wild assortment of widely different interests and sides to her personality, with angel and devil Sucy remarking to Akko that the Sucy she sees every day is only a tiny fraction of her true self.
    • A trip into her mind reveals that, despite being snarky, cold, and sometimes even antagonistic towards Akko, Sucy considers their meeting a cherished memory.
    • She is seen doing meditation and yoga in "Blue Moon", which is the first time Sucy is seen having any hobbies that aren't related to potions or fungi.
    • The versions of her she sends to the guillotine in "Akko's Adventure in Sucyworld", the episode that takes place in her mind are stray thoughts and impulses, the process of killing them or letting them live is similar to the workings of the Freudian Super Ego. In other words, for her otherworldly trickster witch facade, she has a fairly mundane set of values and scruples.
    • When she overhears Hannah and Barbara make fun of her and her teammates (calling her "Creepy Sucy" in particular), Sucy cracks her neck several times. This shows that, for all her aloofness and snarkiness towards her friends, she won't tolerate others making fun of them. Furthermore, this could also hint that Sucy may care how others think of her, at least to a degree.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Sucy will use her friends (especially Akko) for her experiments and snark at them whenever she wants, but if someone else does any of these things, she won't stand for it. For example, overhearing Hannah and Barbara (who are Akko's main bullies) make fun of her and her team is enough to get her to crack her neck in irritation.
  • It Amused Me: Will cause chaos and hurt others if it means she can get something out of it and/or alleviate her boredom.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sucy is more than willing to use her friends (usually Akko) for her experiments, but cares about them just the same.
  • Lady of Black Magic: A witch-in-training knowledgeable in magical poisons and the most malicious in her group. Despite her young age, her aloof and calm demeanor makes her fit this more than Black Magician Girl.
  • Loving Bully: She likes to pick on Akko, but it's shown that Akko is very close to her heart.
  • Mad Scientist: She's the magical equivalent of a mad scientist. She loves coming up with new potions and poisons, then testing them out on unsuspecting victims, mostly her friends. Her Establishing Character Moment is her trapping Akko and Lotte in a net as bait for a cockatrice so that she can steal one of its feathers as an ingredient for her newest potion.
  • Makeup Is Evil: Well, not evil, but she's hands down the meanest in her group of friends, and the one drawn with makeup.
  • Master Poisoner: Her potion knowledge makes her pretty deadly. She tosses her concoctions into a minotaur's mouth, which causes it to melt from the inside out and through the floor. Said minotaur had overpowered Hannah, Barbara, Akko, and even Diana.
  • Me's a Crowd: Her inner thought world is populated entirely by Sucys who represent various aspects of her personality.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her name derives from "mambabarang", a dark sorcerer in the Cebuano language in the Philippines. Also doubles as a Bilingual Bonus.
    • A possible (if reaching) example, but the "Mamba" part of her name could refer to the venomous snake, befitting her fixation with poisons.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Sucy has a row of shark-like teeth, perhaps to enhance her morally dubious character.
  • Nerves of Steel: Not a single one of the monsters she has faced has fazed her for a second, even when they're about to eat her.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Is the mean one amongst the main trio, as she’s an aloof jerk and Nightmare Fetishist who tends to cause chaos and subject her friends (Akko in particular) to her experiments, often unwillingly so. She's still a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, of course.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She's very much interested in dangerous potions, mushrooms, dark magic, and, in general, her interest is piqued by nearly anything sufficiently unpleasant to everyone else. In the series, she enjoys the foul-smelling fumes given off by a potion, and she's downright giddy at the prospect of being eaten by and passing through the digestive tract of a ghost.
  • Non-Specifically Foreign: In contrast to the other main characters, Sucy’s home country is not made clear, as her home country on her profile is listed as merely being Southeast Asia, with no specific country being mentioned. There are hints in the series that imply that she’s from the Philippines (such as her holding a Walis Tambo broom in the first episode), but there’s no confirmation on if she is from there. This is averted in Teri Terio’s manga, where she goes to the Philippines to see her family, with the country being name-dropped at one point, confirming her as being from there.
  • Number of the Beast: The Original Sucy's room number within Sucy's mindscape is 666.
  • Out of Focus: Sucy ends up suffering this along with Lotte during the second cour of the series. The second cour ends up focusing on Akko's quest to revive the Seven Enchanted Words, the backstory of Shiny Chariot, the introduction of Professor Croix, and characters like Diana, Amanda, and Constanze getting spotlight episodes. So Lotte and Sucy ended up finding themselves pushed more to the background.
  • Parental Abandonment: Word of God has stated that she was abandoned as a baby in front of an orphanage with nothing but a bottle of poison. It is the only thing Sucy has of her birth parents, and her reason for being at Luna Nova is to trace its origins in hopes of finding them.note  invoked
  • Playing with Syringes: Her hobby is experimenting with potions and the like on people, usually Akko.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Prone to giving these when pulling a prank or seeing the chaos of one of her pranks unravel. Also sported when she melted the minotaur in the film.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Indicator that she's dangerous.
  • Sadist: She likes pulling pranks that can potentially harm people and seemed pretty amused at putting Akko and Lotte's lives on the line with the cockatrice. The film also has her giggling after one of her poisons melted the minotaur through the ground.
  • Shipper on Deck: She and Lotte jokingly shipped Akko with Andrew.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Her antics is a source of constant humor (usually at Akko's expense). Once Cerebus Syndrome hits, Sucy fades from the narrative fast.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is her last name "Manbavaran" or "Mambabarang"?
  • The Spock: To Lotte's Kirk and Akko's McCoy. She's generally fairly apathetic and stoic, and often acts jerkish.
  • The Stoic: Sucy rarely emotes and almost always has a flat affect and tone, unless something happens to tickle her fancy, which is usually anything morbid.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Aloof and sarcastic, but does have a soft spot for her closest friends.
  • Tareme Eyes: She has rather droopy eyes, whose lids are more often than not lowered, giving her a rather unamused look most the time.
  • Token Evil Teammate: All of the students misbehave a little bit, but Sucy regularly does a lot of mischief, so she counts as one for the student body. Of course, she's not a bad person by any means, but she's easily the most jerkish amongst the main trio.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Implied. She carries around mushrooms, compliments a mushroom dish she ate in "The Fountain", has mushrooms pop up in her A Day in the Limelight in "Akko's Adventure in Sucyworld", and is shown drinking a mushroom-flavored drink.
  • The Trickster: In spades, she enjoys playing tricks on people (mostly Akko). She says it herself:
"There is nothing more fun than messing with you, Akko."
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: She stores her magic wand in her chest area, despite being apparently flat as a board.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Akko doesn't much like that she's constantly used for experiments, and Sucy doesn't like that Akko likes to be at the forefront of operations. Despite this, they still hang out together. In the series, it's implied that most of the reason Sucy hangs out with Akko is that Akko will inevitably screw up and something funny will happen.
  • Wicked Witch: A rare heroic example of this. She's a witch like everyone else. However, she is the only student that really gives creepy vibes and is obsessed with potions.

Green Team

    Amanda O'Neill

Voiced by: Arisa Shida (Japanese), Marin Miller (English)Other Languages

Appearances: The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amanda_87.png

"Eh, I'm just hoping to have a good time!"
A feisty Irish-American witch. Amanda is a fun-loving, rebellious tomboy who tends to cause numerous acts of delinquency (particularly robbery). Although she can be a bit hot-blooded and rude, she is highly caring and loyal towards her friends.
  • The Ace: Invoked. She could easily be the very best broom rider at school, but her tendency to show off doesn't earn her any favors.
  • Action Girl: A witch who loves being adventurous and doing all she can to rebel or spice things up. She also wins the sword duel with Appleton Academy's Louis (the son of the minister of defense).
  • Adaptational Badass: Amanda in The Enchanted Parade could barely hold her own against Thomas and his gang before getting her ass handed to her by them, whereas in the TV series, she effortlessly beats Louis in a sword duel, both with and without magic.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While still a caring and loyal person, she is shown to be more of a jerk in the TV Series continuity and in the Keisuke Satō manga than in The Enchanted Parade and tends to belittle and/or insult Akko often, even after becoming friends with her.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Downplayed between her and Akko in the TV series. While the two are still close friends, they're a bit more vitriolic and the two tend to butt heads a lot more than they did in The Enchanted Parade, where they got along immediately.
  • Anime Hair: Even among the rest of her fellow students, her spiky red and orange colored hair stands out.
  • Bifauxnen: Her disguise as an Appleton Academy boy, with slicked-back hair and the uniform suit, looks sharp indeed.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: In order to fit in with the other male students, Amanda tends to wear a very classy and sharp looking suit when sneaking into Appleton Academy.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The Thin one to Constanze's Short and Jasminka's Big.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The redhead to Jasminka's blonde and Constanze's brunette.
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: The reason she got in trouble in The Enchanted Parade was because she attempted to steal a priceless artifact. She even had a Spy Catsuit.
  • Clothing Reflects Personality: In contrast to the other main characters, Amanda is shown to wear sports sneakers as opposed to slip-on shoes and her T-shirt has a slightly disheveled look compared to her peers, both of which reflect her tomboyish and rebellious personality.
  • Dance Battler: In "Amanda O'Neill and the Holy Grail", her gymnastic Broom dance style is very useful in a duel.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Frequently appears in the series but is the main character with Akko in "Amanda O'Neill and the Holy Grail".
  • Delinquents: She committed petty thievery in The Enchanted Parade and does all sorts of things just to break the rules.
  • Does Not Like Magic: It's revealed in the 2017 manga that Amanda hates magic, finding it to be pointless and used only for scummy stuff.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Amanda has one in both The Enchanted Parade and in the TV series.
    • Amanda is first introduced in The Enchanted Parade by sneaking into the archives to steal a priceless artifact, with one of her mugshots later having her flip off the camera while sticking her tongue out, immediately establishing her as a rebellious delinquent.
    • In the TV series, Amanda is properly introduced in "Don't Stop Me Now" by recklessly flying around on a broom, quickly establishing her as a reckless and fun loving troublemaker. That same episode also re-establishes her delinquent side by having her sneak in and steal the Shooting Star broom.
  • Eagleland: She's an Irish-American student. In The Enchanted Parade she's a bit cool and aloof and was introduced after she got in trouble for trying to steal from the magic school's vaults, but gets along well with her fellow "problem students" and has no qualms helping Akko out when they're put in charge of putting together the titular parade. Her TV series portrayal depicts her as a feisty rebel who likes to go by her own rules and causes trouble simply because she's bored. However, she's very protective of her friends and will jump at the first chance to help them, no questions asked.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Hannah definitely does, after the former saw her wearing a suit.
  • Expy: She is one to Ryuko, being a rough-and-tumble, fanservice-y tomboy with a bright red streak in her Boyish Short Hair. It certainly helps that Little Witch Academia was also made by Studio TRIGGER.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: In "Amanda O'Neill and the Holy Grail", Amanda sticks with Luna Nova simply to have more adventures with Akko.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has orange/red hair and a feisty personality.
  • Fighting Irish: A brash, tough-talking Irish-American young lady who won't hesitate when challenged to a fight.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Shown to be able to fight without using her magic in "Amanda O'Neill and the Holy Grail" when she's challenged to a sword duel (where her opponent Louis does taunt that she might as well use magic since she's hopeless). She utterly humiliates him.
  • Flipping the Bird: Her introductory scene in The Enchanted Parade has her do this in one of the mugshots.
  • Foil:
    • To Diana. Both are talented broom flyers, come from a wealthy family, are (though in different senses) Jerk with a Heart of Gold types, and have a vitriol-like relationship with Akko. However, the proper and responsible Diana came to Luna Nova to make sure her family's reputation remained polished, while the brash and rule-breaking Amanda was forced to coming to Luna Nova by her parents and acts out as a result.note  While Amanda manages to work out her differences with Akko almost immediately, Diana doesn't get around to it until the series is almost over.
    • She's also one to Akko. Both are hot-headed, boisterious and rebellious witches who use magic in unothordox ways and both share a vitriolic relationship with Diana early on. However, whereas Akko is an inexperienced witch who is passionate about magic, Amanda is a rather skilled witch who does not like magic due to her family. Furthermore, whereas Akko's troublemaking is mostly unintentional and despises the idea of leaving Luna Nova, Amanda intentionally causes trouble out of rebellion and desires to drop out due to not wanting to be confined by the school, only deciding to stick around due to her friendship with Akko.
  • Friendly Rival: There are times when she acts like this with Akko, although unlike Diana they do not seem to consider themselves rivals as such.
  • It Amused Me: Played with. During her focus episode, she frequently states that she wants to quit the academy because she argues that she's mostly driven by her own amusement and the conformity and rules imposed on her go against her principles; later, her adventure with Akko makes her realize that the academy is worth it because Akko is there. Akko herself tells her that she will not abide to Amanda quitting either.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Amanda is brash, rude, and breaks rules on a near-daily basis. But she's loyal and compassionate to her friends.
  • The Lad-ette: Amanda is a rude, fun-loving, brash, boisterious, foul-mouthed and rebellious tomboy who has no problems getting into fights when challenged.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Downplayed. She doesn’t swear a ton, though she cusses a bit more frequently compared to the other main characters.
  • The Last DJ: Gets poor marks despite being a very talented witch, because she just won't play by the rules. When called on this by Akko she makes it clear that this is a point of pride for her.
  • Leg Focus: Amanda is a dancer, in addition to being a thief, and the franchise takes plenty of opportunities to show off her nimble, lithe legs.
  • Lovable Rogue: Amanda is a trouble-making witch with a genuine heart of gold.
  • Meaningful Name: While it's disputed, "O'Neill" may mean "descendant of the passionate". And boy is she passionate.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She use to be in a Spy Catsuit and also likes dancing. There's also plenty of shots dedicated to showing her legs and thighs.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: She's a Significant Green-Eyed Redhead of Irish-American background.
  • The Reliable One: She is always there to support her friends unconditionally, regardless of whether it's a good or bad idea.
  • Scenery Censor: When her act transitions from gymnastic (turning midair swings) to her pole-dancing, the animators turn her spinning body into a smear/blur.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her dancing is very similar to pole-dancing and can come off as mildly seductive.
  • Significant Birth Date: Her birthday falls on St. Patrick's Day, an Irish/Irish-American holiday (March 17th).
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Orange/red hair with light green eyes. She also becomes one of the most important characters in the sequel film and TV series.
  • Spy Catsuit: Wore a catsuit during her thieving days.
  • Stock Foreign Name: Her surname is "O'Neill", suggesting she is of Irish-American descent.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has narrow, upwards arching eyes.
  • Undying Loyalty: No matter what happens, Amanda will always pull through for her friends and help them in any way she can.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: In "Amanda O'Neill and the Holy Grail", she dresses up as a boy to infiltrate a boy's high school.

    Constanze Amalie von Braunschbank-Albrechtsburger

Voiced by: Rie Murakawa (Japanese), Jennifer Alyx (English)Other Languages

Appearances: The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/constanze_amalie_von_braunschbank_albrechtsberger.png

A short, German student. Constanze tends to be very distant and is mute most of the time. However, she is a good person at heart and is also a very skilled Gadgeteer Genius who can combine magic and technology to create a wide variety of Magitek-based gadgets, ranging from robots to weapons to even transforming mechas.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Constanze is depicted as being quite aloof in the TV series and like with Akko and Amanda, she and Akko started off on relatively rocky terms before becoming friends unlike in The Enchanted Parade, where the two get along immediately.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is never explained as to why Constanze is able to suddenly speak in "Charging at the Edge of the World, despite episode 18 and Word of God implying that she isn't capable of speech. invoked
  • Badass Adorable: Out of all her peers, Constanze displays by far the most direct combat ability with her arsenal of Magitek weaponry, which includes Shotguns, SMGs and Rocket Launchers.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Her eyebrows are noticeably thicker than the other girls.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The Short one to Amanda's Thin and Jasminka's Big.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The brunette (dark blue) to Jasminka's blonde and Amanda's redhead.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: To emphasize her Gadgeteer Genius characteristic, Constanze is often drawn wearing heavy duty workman's gloves.
  • Cute Mute: Small and cute as a button, and it's heavily implied that she can't actually speak, given in "Stanship Take Off!" when she had to write on a blackboard to tell Akko she works alone. Later in the same episode, she has Stanbot ask one of the goblin chefs for a favor, but when rejected, she gesticulates, but cannot seem to say a word and gives up. She finally speaks in the last episode, getting one of the final lines of the series.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Stanship Take Off!" "StanShip of War" focuses on her.
  • Empty Eyes: Mixed in with Dull Eyes of Unhappiness due to her personality. Her eyes have no iris.
  • Expy: She bears an uncanny resemblence to Koyuki Azumaya.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: In "Stanship Take Off!", Akko becomes a friend and (competition) partner to Constanze for the Wild Hunt.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She uses technology with her magic to create complex gadgets and machinery.
  • Germanic Depressives: She looks perennially gloomy and disinterested in anything that doesn't involve building stuff. "Stanship Take Off!" briefly shows a photo with her as a small child, already with a very grumpy expression on her face.
  • I Work Alone: Claims to believe this in "Stanship Take Off!", but grudgingly lets Akko work with her after the latter's persistence.
  • Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha!: Her battle ship's Super Mode, Magical Warrior Grand Charion, is basically a Magitek-powered Super Robot.
  • Ironic Name: A variation. Constanze has the longest name out of the entire cast, and yet she's The Speechless.
  • Mage Marksman: Constanze's main weapon is a magic powered gun that is fueled by her wand.
  • Magitek: Constanze's hobby is mixing technology with the school's magic. However, it's not something she's supposed to do on school grounds, as muggle tech is forbidden there in the movies, and looked down upon by the traditionalist teachers in the TV series.
  • Muggles Do It Better: Downplayed, but the "tech" aspect of her magic generally allows her to bypass a lot of magic-related problems other witches face, such as her mechanical broom being unaffected by Sucy's poison sabotage in "Don't Stop Me Now", or "Pact of the Dragon" when her machines remain functional even when the Philosopher's Stone is gone.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her general seriousness and impatience towards people getting in the way of her projects, "Stanship Take Off!" reveals that even Constanze thinks converting her ship into a Humongous Mecha is awesome.
  • Overly Long Name: Her mugshot had an additional bit of paper with the rest of her name taped on to the bottom of the nameplate she held. After (remarkably successfully) reading off her name during the relay race, Wangari lampshades that she is the "bane of announcers".
  • Perpetual Frowner: Constanze hardly smiles, with a frown being her default expression.
  • Pet the Dog: She gifts Akko a modified broom with a fan and a sail as a gesture of appreciation of having helped her during the Wild Hunt.
  • The Quiet One: Despite seemingly being a Cute Mute for nearly the entire series, she finally speaks a single line at the end of the finale.
  • Robot Buddy: Built one during the first Happy Time Project meeting, out of a laptop that resembles the original PlayStation. In the TV series, she builds the same buddy just before the Samhain Festival. His name is "Stan" (the middle syllable of her name). In "Stanship Take Off!", she has apparently about 20 or 30 of them in her secret underground lair.
  • Schizo Tech: Compared to Croix's Magitek, Constanze's tech tends to come off this way as a mix of 20th-century technology with a decided Steampunk vibe, compared to Croix hyper-modern 21st-Century computer tech with Everything Is an iPod in the Future aesthetics.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Constanze is the shortest member of the main cast and a crafty Gadgeteer Genius.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: Uses a Magitek shotgun to fight off dragons. The handle of her wand serves as the pump-action.
  • The Stoic: (Almost) never changes her frowning, grumpy expression.
  • Suddenly Voiced: She speaks a single word at the very end of "Changing at the Edge of the World".
  • Talking with Signs: Whenever she needs to communicate something that goes beyond grunts and gestures, she writes it down.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She wears a big red ribbon.
  • The Voiceless: She never speaks in actual words, just cute grunts, hums, and gasps. Until the end of "Changing at the Edge of the World" that is.
  • Weapon Specialization: Magitek-based firearms, contradictory to the wands that all the other witches prefer to use:
    • In The Enchanted Parade, she transforms her wand into a submachinegun reminiscent of the Walther MPL.
    • In "Pact of the Dragon", she transforms her wand into a pump-action shotgun to fend off the attacking dragons, and later on switches to a rocket launcher resembling an RPG-7.
    • In "Stanship Take Off!", she brandishes an MP5K with a 15-round magazine at an intruding Akko. Unlike the above examples, this particular weapon does not have any features from her wand at all, being drawn quite accurately.
  • When She Smiles: It's surprisingly very cute when she does.

    Jasminka Antonenko

Voiced by: Reina Ueda (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)Other Languages

Appearances: The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara08.png

An all-around nice and jolly witch student from Russia. She is a Big Eater who tends to eat a ton, getting to where she got into trouble at one point for constantly snacking during class. She is also incredibly strong as well.

  • Big Eater: Never seen without something to munch on, usually crisps or candies. In fact, being on the parade planning committee is supposed to be her punishment for habitually stealing food. In the English dub, it's downgraded to eating during class.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The Big one out of the trio of her, Amanda (Thin) and Constanze (Short).
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The blonde (purplish pink) to Constanze's brunette and Amanda's redhead.
  • Closet Geek: When everyone else reacts to Constanze and Akko's Humongous Mecha with confused expressions, Jasminka thinks it's very cool.
  • Enemy Within: Keisuke Satō's manga reveals that Jasminka's Big Eater tendencies come from a Hunger Faery inside of her that she accidentally consumed a long time ago, which if left uncontrolled for too long (by not eating), is a beast that can overtake it's user and will eat almost everything in it's path, even people, the only exception being salty things, which Akko uses to her advantage in defeating the Faery (through giving it a Pickled Plum) after she indirectly causes Jasminka to unleash it due to putting her on a forced diet, unaware of the Faery.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes are rarely opened.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has two long braids with bows.
  • Nice Girl: Aside from her appetite and her off-screen food theft, Jasminka's strongest trait is that she's an all-around sweetheart. She's not at all stingy with her supply of snacks in any case.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to the other named students, including her friends who've each gotten episodes focused on their character development, Jasminka has much fewer lines and less screentime.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Jasminka always has a smile on her face to show her jolly nature.
  • Stout Strength: Can carry (the admittedly small) Constanze with just one arm while the other is firing a Magitek shotgun, hurl giant garbage bags full of magic potion sludge, and quickly use a big hand pump with little to nothing effort.
  • Token Good Teammate: In contrast to her teammates, Amanda and Constanze, who can both be a bit rough around the edges, Jasminka is a Nice Girl who can pretty much get along with everyone.

Blue Team

    Diana Cavendish

"Real magic is cultivated by traditions and countless hours of intensive study. It's not something someone simply intrigued by a fad can ever hope to learn."
Luna Nova's top student and a member of the prestigious Cavendish family, Diana is a haughty, cold, stuck up girl who is out to prove the greatness of witches and has no time for nonsense. Because of this, she tends to look down on Akko for her troublemaking tendencies, as well as her love of Shiny Chariot and her expressing that magic should be used for fun.

Still, she is not nearly as mean as she acts and she might have more in common with Akko than either would care to admit.

Barbara's voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (Japanese), Alexis Nichols (English)Other Languages

Appearances: Little Witch Academia | The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stuffdsaafg.jpg
Hannah (left) and Barbara (right).

Diana's roommates and Girl Posse. They're both snobbish jerks who tend to bully Akko for her non-magical heritage and general incompetence at magic and are generally meaner than Diana tends to be. That said, they are highly loyal to Diana and care about her greatly.

Tropes that apply to both
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While they were jerks in the films, they merely served as Diana's Girl Posse in them and simply reinforced her own bullying and not much else. In the TV series, however, they're much more active in bullying and antagonizing Akko than in the films and have even gotten into a physical fight with her at one point (which granted, Akko started, but it was their bullying that provoked her into starting it, so they're not exactly blameless for it either).
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: The duo remains straight-up jerks in the films. In contrast, while they are still jerks in the TV series, they do offer their sincere thanks toward Akko for successfully managing to bring Diana back to Luna Nova and are shown hanging out with the others by the end of episode 25.
  • Asshole Victim: They were both on the receiving end of a physical beating from Akko in "Orange Submariner", though given their stuck up and mocking behavior towards her, including having tripped her prior to the fight, it’s a little difficult to feel bad for them.
  • Beta Bitch: They are Diana's lackeys who actively antagonize Akko. They're actually a good deal nastier at it than Diana usually is. Particularly in the TV series.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The brunette and redhead to Diana's blonde.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: The two start out as being snobbish bullies to Akko and friends, but by the epilogue, they're shown to be hanging out with them on good terms, seemingly having become friends with them.
  • Butt-Monkey: As often as they are bullies, fate turns them into this as well.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Downplayed. After the events of "Cavendish" and "Intellect and Sensibility", they appear to have stopped teasing Akko and sought her out to say "Thank You" for doing what they couldn't do - bring Diana back. It's still awkward because they can only muster blank looks while saying so, but they are trying at least. By the epilogue, Barbara is reading a new Night Fall novel with Lotte, while Hannah is sharing sandwiches with Jasminka.
  • The Dividual: Outside of their appearances, they are largely identical, as they share the same personality and role, are never shown or introduced separately and are often treated as though they are one character. The TV series does slightly distinguish them a bit by making Barbara a Closet Geek of Night Fall in contrast to Hannah, but outside of that, they largely remain identical.
  • Enemy Mine: In the Keisuke Satō manga, Hannah and Barbara end up working with Lotte and Sucy, two people they're shown to dislike, in order to cure Diana of her illness.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first things they do upon in "Starting Over" is express displeasure towards the idea of a muggle joining Luna Nova and then mock Akko for her inability to fly and naivety upon meeting her, establishing them as haughty bullies.
  • Fainting: They faint with shock twice in "Bee Affection" as first Andrew and then Diana profess love for Akko, not aware it's a Lovelove Bee.
  • Fangirl: Hannah and Barbara are shown to be this to Diana, with the two frequently praising her and boasting to others about how wonderful and talented of a witch she is. They're also shown to be quite fond of Andrew as well as they've shown an attraction to him in "The Fountain".
  • Fantastic Racism: One of the reasons why they bully Akko in the TV series is due to her non-magical background, with both of them expressing the opinion that non-witches shouldn't be enrolled into Luna Nova.
  • Food as Bribe: In "New Age Magic", during the strike, they bribe a little fire fairy with a piece of wood so they can take a hot shower.
  • Girl Posse: They follow Diana around like puppies and sing her praises at any given moment. However, they have nastier attitudes compared to their leader, and it is implied that they stick with Diana because they want to ride on the coattails of Luna Nova's star pupil, which was then subverted in episode 19, in which it's revealed that they're actually True Companions.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After spending nearly the entirety of the series as bullies, the epilogue has them hanging out with Akko and friends, implying they're on good terms with them now.
  • Jerkass: They needlessly mock Akko and her friends, especially the former.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. While they are stuck up jerks most of the time, they both care deeply about Diana and get very saddened when Diana leaves Luna Nova and after Akko brings her back, they actually thanked her for doing so (albeit reluctantly) and by the end, the two are shown hanging out with the main group, implying they're on better terms with them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Their seesawing from bullying Akko to being the Butt-Monkey tends to work on this.
  • Named After Someone Famous: They both are, in a twofer:
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Hannah and Barbara are always holding hands and clinging to each other. They also take a shower together in "New Age Magic" (even though the immediate reason for that was the strike of the fairies).
  • Satellite Character: They are always seen with Diana in the films. The TV series gives a bit more characterization and time away from Diana, but they're still predominantly just Diana's followers.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: Named after an American animation studio and its two creators.
  • Those Two Girls: They're always together and exist primarily to make fun of Akko and friends, secondarily as a foil to Diana.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In the TV series. Like the films, the duo started off as snobbish, bullying jerks to Akko and her friends. After Akko convinces Diana to return to Luna Nova, they give the former a genuine and proper thanks. And by the epilogue, they're hanging out with the main group.
  • True Companions:
    • For much of the series, it seemed like Hannah and Barbara were just riding on Diana's coattails, basking in the reflected glory. Come "Cavendish", they are devastated by Diana leaving, revealing they were this all along. Later, they both make a point of personally thanking Akko for bringing their dear friend back to Luna Nova. At the end of the series, they are seen hanging around with the main character group, along with Diana.
    • To further showcase how much they care for Diana, in the Keisuke Satō manga, when Diana gets ill from immolation disease, both of them freaked out tremendously and to cure her, the two ultimately decide to go as far as to team up with Sucy and Lotte (two people they hated) in order to find the ingreidents needed to make the antidote.
  • Undying Loyalty: Hannah and Barbara are both incredibly loyal to Diana and will do anything to ensure her well-being, the Keisuke Satō manga being probably the best example of their loyalty to her as they're willing to work with Lotte and Sucy to ensure Diana gets cured of her illness

Tropes that apply to Hannah

Tropes that apply to Barbara

  • Closet Geek: Barbara is a fan of Night Fall but pretends to be otherwise when she and Hannah are at the Night Fall fan event.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Barbara has blue hair and eyes.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: There was practically no difference between her and Hannah in the films outside of their designs, with both fulfilling the same overall role as Diana’s Girl Posse. In the series however, while she’s still just as much of a stuck up bully as Hannah, she is shown to secretly be a fan of the Night Fall series, separating her a bit from Hannah, who is shown to dislike it.
  • Hidden Depths: Barbara is secretly into Night Fall; the same novel series Lotte enjoys reading. By the TV series finale, both can be seen reading from the newest book together.
  • Shock and Awe: Barbara seems to like using this element for her spells.
  • Tareme Eyes: She has droopier eyes for looking down on others.

Professor Ursula Callistis/"Shiny" Chariot du Nord

Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Japanese), Alexis Nichols (English)Other Languages

Appearances: Little Witch Academia | The Enchanted Parade | TV Series

Click here to see her in the epilogue

"I had a dream ever since I was a child. It was to become a witch who could make everyone smile. I had no doubt it would come true."
One of the academy's professors, teaching Magical Astronomy/Astrology. In reality, she is the legendary witch known as Shiny Chariot, who inspired a young Akko into becoming a witch. While the regular world sees her as a grand witch, the magic world sees her as an insult to witchcraft and magic. She quickly becomes attached to Akko and becomes her mentor figure in order to guide her on her quest to become the witch of her dreams.
  • Adrenaline Makeover: Exaggerated. Her Game Face involves losing the Nerd Glasses, stripping away her frumpy clothes to reveal a Spy Catsuit, and letting her magically dyed drab blue hair return to its normal fiery red.
  • All-Loving Heroine: As a child, her only desire was to bring joy to others with magical displays. As an adult, she is patient and kind with her students, especially with Akko, whom she takes a lot of time out of her day to personally tutor. And, as of "The Road to Arcturus", even after everything Croix pulled off specifically to hurt her, she fights tooth and nail to protect her old friend from the destructive rampage of her own creation.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Ursula is not a very popular teacher among the staff, and given her crippling self-hatred, she refuses to stick up for herself.
  • All Part of the Show: In The Enchanted Parade, when the sealed giant resurfaces during the Witch Parade, Ursula tricks the audience into thinking that it's part of an elaborate stage show to prevent mass panic.
  • Almighty Janitor: For a witch that ultimately just wants to perform in magic shows for families (and is despised by the magic world for that), and masquerades as a shy, demure teacher, she's way overpowered. "Chariot of Fire" and "The Road to Arcturus" show her enormous magic and physical capabilities, and keep in mind that in the latter, she was hit with Wagandia's Pollen and fought without the help of a Sorcerer's Stone, so she didn't even use the full extent of her powers.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her relationship with Croix is loaded with romantic subtext. They were very close friends during their Luna Nova days, had several very emotionally intimate moments together (complete with hugging), and despite everything Croix has done, Chariot still doesn't hesitate to try and save her when the Noir Rod goes berserk. She's also quite distressed in the epilogue when Croix has to leave and gives a rather emotional farewell, complete with a rather wistful promise to wait for her return. It also doesn't hurt that Chariot's relationship with Croix is clearly meant to parallel Akko's own subtext-laden relationship with Diana, and unlike Akko, Chariot never shows any real interest in the opposite sex either.
  • The Atoner: Part of the reasoning for becoming Akko's mentor is to atone for her disastrous attempt to improve her own show with the Dream Fuel Spirit spell ten years ago. Deconstructed slightly, considering that she is less culpable for the events she wants to atone for.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Of the teachers, she's the only "young" one, as she's only in her 20s,note  meaning she's tasked with assignments her older colleagues don't want to do, citing their ages as an excuse. Even after Croix joins the faculty, Ursula is still younger than her by at least a year:
    Ursula: Being young is suffering.
  • Badass Teacher: Little Witch Academia, being set for the most part in a Wizarding School, comes naturally staffed with at least reasonably competent witch professors, but Professor Ursula definitely takes the cake for the measure of "most badass". She usually plays the part of a meek, soft-spoken educator, but she is still very athletic and skilled at magic in intense situations - when getting through Croix's obstacles, she dismantles all of them without much effort, and she effortlessly brawls giant monsters with her bare fists in defense of her students and Croix.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Wears glasses that emphasize her shy and nerdy nature.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: In the series, she's usually very timid and non-confrontational, with both students and the other teachers. But at the end of "Orange Submariner", when the infamously domineering Professor Finneran tries to get Akko expelled (again), Ursula stands up for Akko, and aggressively berates Finneran for always being so harsh and unfair towards a student with no experience or background in magic. When there's no need to keep up the charade, she's also scarily powerful in combat, bordering on straight-up Magic Knight.
  • Broken Ace: Very talented, smart, and inhumanly athletic. However, she sometimes catches flak from fellow teachers, gets unwillingly involved in Akko's shenanigans, and constantly acts the weak and shy role. She also doesn't particularly respond positively whenever Akko mentions Shiny Chariot, suggesting something happened to make her give up that role. It's later revealed that ten years earlier, she used Croix's Dream Fuel Spirit magic in her stage performances, converting dreaming energy into mana, but that it resulted in long-lasting damage to the audience's ability to produce mana.
  • Brought Down to Normal: A consequence of the Dream Fuel Spirit magic which she used once on the audiences of her Shiny Chariot show in Japan. Furthermore, she suffered this herself after saving Akko from Wagandea's Pollen, losing her ability to fly.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She spends most of the series attempting to tell Akko that due to her mistakes, the girl was left devoid of magic powers. This is driven by the guilt she feels, which is further exacerbated by Akko's love and admiration for both her and her Shiny Chariot persona.
  • Catchphrase: "Never forget, a believing heart is your magic," back when she was a performer. Croix was the one who first said it to her.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: She may not look it, but Chariot is actually super fit, capable of parkouring up vertical walls, swinging around stone axes that are a good ten times larger than she is and drop-kicking giant dragon-mechas in (temporary) submission. And as "The Road to Arcturus" shows, she does this with no magical enhancement whatsoever.
  • Clark Kenting: It's rather obvious Ursula is Chariot when you can see her eyes behind those Opaque Lenses. This gets even sillier when Akko makes an unscheduled visit to her room to talk about Shiny Chariot, sees her without glasses on, and neither recognizes her nor questions why she wasn't already wearing them.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: As Chariot, she has matching red hair and eyes.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Played with. She's cute and sweet but comes off as awkward and timid at times. However, it's hinted that her clumsy side is an act. When she trips over the goblin, she first bobbles the books, then juggles them and then successfully catches them in a very dramatic and showy manner, only to hop forward and "fall" after she peeks back and sees the disapproving look of her senior. Then, in "Chariot of Fire", when she has to fight Croix's magic and isn't seen by anyone, she displays significant acrobatic proficiency.
  • Declaration of Protection: When Croix makes it clear that she's a threat to Akko, Chariot swears to do everything in her power to defend her from her once best friend. Later on, she ends up making a similar declaration for Croix herself when her Noir Rod begins to backfire.
  • Deuteragonist: Her backstory is one of the driving forces behind the plot, and her relationship with Akko is one of the focal points of the series.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Normally, Ursula meekly endures the ire of her senior coworker Finneran. However, when Finneran tried genuinely to get Akko expelled, Ursula snaps and proceeds to rail on the older professor with a fiery "The Reason You Suck" Speech in defense of her student, viciously tearing into her traditionalist nature and lack of consideration for Akko's non-magical background.
  • Dream Stealer: The Dream Fuel Spirit, which converts hopes and dreams into magical energy, at the cost of damaging magical ability in those it's used on, such as the audiences of her Shiny Chariot shows.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she's normally incredibly patient and forgiving with Akko and her antics, Akko using magic to curse Finnelan's tea during a side quest in Chamber of Time actually leads to her getting harshly scolded by the teacher.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In her youth, she had bright red hair. She hid it after she gave up her "Shiny Chariot" persona and her friendship with Croix fell apart. After the two reconcile in the finale, she goes back to keeping her hair red.
  • Fiery Redhead: Exaggerated. Her hair turns red when she lets out the fire.
  • Fights Like a Normal: She doesn't actually rely much on magic for direct combat. Instead, her primary offensive strategy seems to mostly consist of punching and/or kicking her enemies into submission.
  • Foil: To Croix, especially during their school days:
    • Both were talented in magic, but they had their differences. Croix was considered the star student and was expected to be the torch bearer for the traditional practices of the magic of Luna Nova. Chariot, on the other hand, was not well-received because of her frequent failures and flashy, unorthodox magic. Despite this, Chariot became the chosen one to unlocking the Seven Words while Croix got sidelined. Furthermore, their intentions behind unlocking the Grand Triskellion are different. Croix wanted to become the greatest witch in the world; Chariot only wanted to make people happy.
    • As adults, Chariot is not very popular at Luna Nova for her timidity and clumsiness. Croix, though she does have a few people who don't approve of her (i.e. Finneran), is much more well-liked and is quite charismatic. However, Chariot cares deeply for her students and the school and only wants what's best for them, while Croix sees them as a means to an end and doesn't hesitate to manipulate them to further her own goals. The subjects they teach are also opposites, with Chariot's subject being from traditional magic and relying on natural aspects and Croix's subject being modern magic that uses technology.
    • They also contrast one another in their combat styles. Chariot is an Action Girl utilizing a lot of kicks and acrobatics in tandem with her magic, while Croix stays at a distance and lets her Powers Do the Fighting, mostly sending weak attack drones or forming stronger monsters from her shapeshifting Emotion Eater Magitek cubes.
  • For Happiness: All her life, Chariot had one dream: to make people happy with displays of magic.
  • Foreshadowing: The fact that Ursula is Chariot shouldn't be a surprise to those who have seen the short films first, but the series does drop a few early hints for first-time viewers. Notably, Ursula seems very uneasy when she hears Diana badmouth Chariot, and when Headmistress Holbrooke finds Akko's cherished Chariot card, she tells Ursula that it brings her some fond memories (to which Ursula responds with a heartfelt smile).
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Shiny Chariot wore a skin-tight costume.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: She may be The Chosen One and possibly more powerful and competent than any other witch in the present day, but the magic world sees Shiny Chariot as nothing more than a joke, and she's currently slumming it anonymously as a mistreated teacher.
  • Hot Witch: Shiny Chariot was a performer witch whose outfit features Navel-Deep Neckline, a short skirt, and Zettai Ryouiki. It does a good job of highlighting her curvy figures and the fact she's got impressively curvy legs. She's still cute as Ursula but dresses more modestly. However, when she puts her Game Face on and shows off her Spy Catsuit, she shows she's still got it.
  • Humble Pie: Like her student, Chariot receives this.
    • The Fountain of Polaris basically spells out to her that she has to study hard in order to improve her magic skills.
    • She gets another slice of this in the final portions of the anime. Her decade long experience with the quest for the Grand Triskellion has left her defeated and dejected.
  • I Will Wait for You: Non-romantic example. Maybe. What she says to Croix after she departs at the end of the series, promising to find a cure for Wagandea's Pollen so she can restore Chariot's ability to fly.
  • Irony: Her show that inspired Akko to become a witch absorbed some of her magic, which crippled Akko's magic development, particularly broom flying. Come "Things We Said Today", she gets exposed to the Wagandea tree's pollen thanks to Akko's impulsiveness, which causes Chariot to lose her ability to fly on a broom.
  • It's All My Fault: Seems to have a bad habit of blaming herself for circumstances that were out of her control. For one, she believes that she stole Croix's dream of unlocking the Grand Triskellion, even though Woodward wanted Chariot to do it. She also thinks it's completely her fault for severely crippling Akko's magic, even though Croix was purposefully hiding what her Dream Fuel Spirit magic actually did.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Whenever her drab blue hair ignites into its original fiery red color, its a pretty good indication that Ursula's about to fight to the full extent of her capabilities. invoked
  • Mama Bear: No surprise given her Meaningful Name, but she is a caring mentor to Akko and is very protective of her against Croix. Part of her care is out of guilt for permanently crippling Akko's magic skill with her Dream Fuel Spirit ten years prior.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her name, Chariot du Nord, refers to the northern Big Dipper asterism, or the "Grand Chariot" in French. This is the polar opposite of Professor Croix "du Sud", her "Southern Cross".
    • Her "civilian" name, Ursula, shares an etymology with Ursa Major, the constellation that contains the Big Dipper.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Subverted. In spite of hanging a variety of "death flags" from Dead Anime Mom Hair to a Declaration of Protection to being Eaten Alive, she survives all of this to remain Akko's teacher.
  • Morality Pet: Played with in regards to Croix. Even though Croix outright admits her intent in messing with Akko is to get back at Chariot, she's is also the only person Croix openly shows any concern towards. Only moments after said threats, when Chariot gets knocked out in their fight and is about to fall to her death, Croix frantically shouts her name and once they face each other back on the ground, Croix looks anguished more than anything. When Croix loses control of the transformed Noire Rod, she tells Chariot to leave her behind when she tries to defend her because she knows that the rage-fueled machine is only after Croix.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Ursula wears her blue hair in a loose ponytail over her right shoulder. It makes her look kind and approachable, suitable for her mentor role towards Akko.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Immediately after blasting the moon, and watching the Shiny Rod crumbling to nothing in her grasp.
    • Upon learning that it's her fault that Akko was drained of her magic.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • In her youth, she felt lost after the interest in her shows declined due to lack of new content. When she ran out of solutions, her old friend, Croix, showed up and offered her a new not-yet-tested magic to revitalize Chariot's show. After successfully debuting it on a show in Japan, Croix explained that the Dream Fuel Spirit left her audience members devoid of magic energy (including Akko and Diana). Diana was able to recover her magic by gradually grinding her way up, while Akko, unbeknownst to her, had to start from zero pretty late in her life. Taking Akko under her wing served as a way to atone for her disaster and the whole ordeal is pretty much the reason why Professor Croix is antagonizing her.
    • After deciding not to use the DFS anymore, she failed to mesmerize her audience and tried extreme magic using the First Word, shooting an arrow to the moon, leaving a visible crater on it.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Akko being chosen as Shiny Rod's new wielder is this for her, as not only does she get to rectify failing to find the seventh word, it's also a chance to redeem herself for stealing Akko's magic, along with that of other people (including Diana's).
  • Mysterious Past: Not so much to the audience, but in the series, Shiny Chariot has been missing for ten years, and nobody knows where she went or why. The audience, though, at least knows where. However, it takes a long time before it's revealed why she went missing.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her outfit as Shiny Chariot has a plunging neckline that shows off her cleavage and a bit of stomach.
  • Navel Window: Shiny Chariot's white jacket combines a roughly figure eight-shaped navel cutout and a plunging neckline, ostensibly to draw even more attention during her public performances.
  • No Name Given: The first short film didn't give her a name; the other characters only addressed her as "professor". Her name was finally given as Ursula in The Enchanted Parade.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: She risks life and limb to protect Croix from her haywire invention, even when her friend starts pleading for her to leave and save herself.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Croix pulls this in "Things We Said Today" by saying Chariot has no right to call her out for converting anger into mana when she did the same with her Dream Fuel Spirit ten years earlier. This is a hypocritical salt rubbing, however, as Croix was the one who invented that magic and didn't tell Chariot about the side effects until after she used it once.
  • Parental Substitute: Ursula became a sisterly, almost maternal figure to Akko, giving her the respect of a peer while looking out for her as a guardian. By "Chariot of Fire", it is pretty clear that Ursula loves Akko, and in the video game, Akko straight up says that she regards Chariot as being like a mother figure to her.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: While she was chosen to wield the Claiomh Solais, she became unworthy of it before she was able to rediscover all Seven Words of Arcturus. She holds tremendous guilt for her actions and works to help Akko - the current wielder of the Shiny Wand - succeed where she failed.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: During the first film, when she saves Akko by distracting the dragon for a bit, she very briefly has red hair. It's implied that the same was true in her Shiny Chariot days. It's seen again, almost the same way, in "The Fountain". This is actually inverted because her natural hair color is red and she normally keeps it blue in order to conceal her identity.
  • Retired Badass: Was Shiny Chariot in her youth. "Yesterday" reveals that she was still in school at the time. Even so, she's proven to still participate when need be; while she directly participates in fighting the Dragon, she sits on the sidelines during the Witch Parade where she acts directly only once to rescue the mayor from getting squashed and contents herself with using narration to give the girls hints. One gets the impression that she could have handled it herself in a heartbeat.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Most of Ursula's confrontations with Croix usually ends up been the former trying to fix the problems she caused or admonishing her. But after Croix drives Akko away, Chariot is completely enraged and finally commits to confronting Croix directly about her plans before trying to stop them by brute force.
  • Saying Too Much: She starts rambling at length about what kind of a person Croix was in her days as a student when Diana asks about the new professor, essentially giving away the fact that they were quite familiar with each other. When she quickly backpedals and tries to deny this, Diana's sharp enough to look up the school records, subsequently discovering that a student by the name of Ursula Callistis never existed, which later led to her correctly guessing Ursula's true identity as Chariot.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Inverted. Her glasses normally have Opaque Lenses, despite not being sunglasses, and her eyes are only visible when her animators particularly want her to express emotion. A downplayed version of The Glasses Come Off, if you will.
  • Sensei-chan: She's noticeably younger and friendlier than the rest of the teachers and has even gotten caught up in Akko's schemes on a few occasions.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Her drive to educate Akko and her encouragement for the girl to reveal the Seven Words stems from the fact that due to her, Akko was drained of her magic faculties in a failed effort from Chariot to find the Grand Triskellion and restore the magic leylines to the world.
  • Shapeshifter: Did a lot of transformations in her performances as Shiny Chariot, which inspired Akko to take it up as her own specialty.
  • Stellar Name: While normally Ursula would have Mama Bear connotations, it's much more likely a reference to the night sky considering:
    • She is the teacher of magic astronomy in the school.
    • She has a pet bird named Alcor, one of the stars of the Big Dipper.
    • The alternative name of the Big Dipper is Ursa Major, the constellation that Shiny Chariot appears from to deliver her shows in both the film and the TV series. Furthermore, another alternate name for the Big Dipper in much of Europe is the Wagon. Shiny Chariot → Star Wagon.
    • Her real name, Chariot du Nord, literally means "northern chariot", another way of referring to the Big Dipper, known in French as Le Grand Chariot.
    • Polaris has come up in association with her a couple of times, through the Fountain of Polaris. Polaris is the North Star and is part of the Little Dipper constellation, otherwise known as Ursa Minor. Ursa Major is commonly used to locate Polaris in celestial navigation.
  • Taking the Bullet: On two occasions. The first time, she shields Akko from Wagandea's pollen, resulting in her losing her own ability to fly. The second time, she pushes Croix out of the way as her out-of-control machine dragon attacks her and gets eaten in her stead.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Ursula wears a light brown band at the end of her Motherly Side Plait.
  • Token Adult: She is the most prominent adult character amongst the teenage main cast and acts as the mentor and Parental Substitute to Akko.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Dream Fuel Spirit was originally Croix's idea and she let Chariot know its magic draining effects only after it had been used.
  • Vapor Wear: Shiny Chariot wore nothing under her stage outfit.
  • Walking Spoiler: Mild since it's made obvious in the films and not played up as much of a mystery in the series, but it's almost impossible to talk about Ursula to potential viewers without mentioning that she's Shiny Chariot.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Called out by Diana when she abandons a distraught Akko after the big reveal.

"Outdated magics burdened by their dark history are quickly falling out of relevance in today's world. I firmly believe that magic must reinvent itself to retain its place in our times".
A mysterious and sinister new teacher who shows up in the second half of the series. Her specialty is Modern Magic, which combines modern electronics with Magic. While she puts on a nice and friendly facade, in reality, she is a cold, logical, vengeful and calculating person who plans to use her modern magic to achieve her agenda.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: When they were students, she gave Chariot an encouraging head pat when the latter was feeling down about her failings at magic.
  • All for Nothing: Her effort in opening the Grand Triskellion only results in finding a twig that grants her not the power to change the world, but what she in her heart of hearts wants most: to be like Chariot, casting entertaining but ultimately "useless" magic for her as a result. Only the wielder of the Shiny Rod, who has gone through the required hero's journey, has the spiritual maturity to unlock the Triskelion's true world changing potential, meaning in her effort to impede Akko's progress, she was likewise impeding her own claimed goal as well. Ultimately, it's only her power of hate magitek running rampant and causing an international crisis, something she never intended, and Akko and company stopping it, that actually helps in restoring the faith in magic and witches across the world and bringing about a magic revival.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her relationship with Chariot is loaded with romantic subtext. They were very close friends during their Luna Nova days, had several very emotionally intimate moments together (complete with hugging), and despite her claims to hate Chariot, Croix goes out of her way to save Chariot's life on multiple occasions. It also doesn't hurt that Croix's relationship with Chariot is clearly meant to parallel Diana's own subtext-laden relationship with Akko.
  • Anti-Villain: Croix's motivations are mostly well intentioned, as they are driven by a genuine desire to unseal the Grand Triskelion and to save magic from its increasing decline, but beyond being unquestionably driven by selfishness, her ways and methods of achieving that goal are questionable at best and actively malicious at worst.
  • The Atoner: In the ending, she states that after she serves her sentence, she plans on helping Chariot by finding a cure for Wagandea's Pollen.
  • Ax-Crazy: Her personality in "Things We Said Today" is very much this. She starts going on about consuming negative emotions and starts laughing like a crazed maniac at one point. She also wants to open the Grand Triskellion by using negative emotions by starting a war.
  • Beneath the Mask: Croix's dramatics and confident persona hide a deep insecurity over being rejected by Woodward, thus denied the chance of saving the world's magic and becoming the greatest witch in the world. Likewise, her antagonism towards Chariot and her intentional provocations hide the fact that deep down, despite scapegoating her for all her own miseries, she never could truly stop caring about her childhood friend.
  • Big Bad: She becomes the anime's primary antagonist, planning to use her modern magic for her own agenda. Furthermore, every bad thing that happened to Akko and Chariot can be linked back to her as well as Diana losing her magic when she was a kid.
  • Big Bad Friend: She was once Chariot's upperclassman and her best friend.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She comes off as a friendly and laidback teacher to the students and some of the faculty, but is plotting something rather sinister behind everyone's backs. Ursula is the only one that knows of her true nature. Finneran doesn't know as much as Ursula but is suspicious of Croix anyway.
  • Childhood Friends: Was a student alongside Chariot and appeared to be her friend — it's her voice that's heard in the "What You Will" flashback.
  • The Chosen Wannabe: In their youth, both Croix and Chariot wanted to unlock the Grand Triskellion, but Croix was at first devastated when Claiomh Solais chose Chariot over her. When she sees Chariot breaking down and apologizing because she also believed Croix deserved it more, Croix calms her down with a hug and tells Chariot that she accepts it. Whether or not that was true, watching Chariot "waste" the gift by putting on shows instead of revitalizing the World's magic slowly made Croix more and more bitter until she decided to do it herself with unsavory methods.
  • Classic Villain: Croix represents Ambition, Pride and Envy. Her appearance is different from the other teachers at Luna Nova Academy who wear Robe and Wizard Hat. She pretends to be friendly with The Hero Akko to further her own ends. She's the complete opposite to Akko: Whereas she is young, untalented, impulsive, and selfless and wants to become the best witch For Happiness, Croix is older, talented, calculating, and selfish and wants to become the greatest witch for the sake of it.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: She has green eyes to match both her status as a witch and her jealousy for Chariot.
  • Colour-Coded Emotions: The app she uses to manage Noire Fuel Spirit displays emotions this way.
  • Cool Teacher: At least she appears to be. Akko, in particular, practically idolizes her for having been a schoolmate of Chariot and being one of the few people out there who respect Chariot for her attitude and approach towards magic (if her praise for Chariot is genuine, anyway).
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Croix is a deconstruction of The Unchosen One. When Chariot, The Chosen One of the time, seemingly failed in her quest, Croix took it upon herself to do so in her stead. She did this out of arrogance and implied desire for the mentor's approval and tried to accomplish it through means that were criminal at best. In the end, her efforts are meaningless and self-defeating due to the fact that the Grand Triskellion can only be utilized by completing The Hero's Journey of learning the Seven Words of Claiomh Solais. Croix's bypassing of the Seven Words means that, when she gets her hands on the Grand Triskellion, she hasn't gained the purity of heart to use or even make sense of it.
  • Determinator: A villainous example, but Croix never gave up on her dream to unlock the Grand Triskellion, even after ten years and seemingly the only means of doing so (the Shiny Rod) had vanished. To this end, she made striding accomplishments in magitronics, a field that most other witches consider taboo for its departure from traditional magic, and invokes mass riots to collect emotional energy. To her credit, she does actually succeed, even though it turns out that unlocking the Grand Triskellion is useless without the Claiomh Solais. Furthermore, while she went about it in a terrible way, her ultimate goal of restoring magic to the world is also successfully accomplished, with herself playing no small part in the process of it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Never seems to occur to her that using negative emotions to open the Triskillion could have had a very bad effect in the long run. Indeed with her machine powered by negative emotions, it doesn't take long for the control to slip from her once powered in full.
  • Driven by Envy: She outright states that her messing with Akko's quest to find the Seven Words is just to ruin Chariot's dream. It seems that it all comes from Chariot being selected to open the Triskellion and not her (combined with her frustration over Chariot not treat her chosen-one duties as her primary goal). It also appears she was jealous of Chariot's popularity just before her magic show took off. Reinforced when she opens the Grand Triskelion and all its wish granting magic does for her is cast Chariot's stage magic. Deep down, she didn't want to change the world, she just wanted to be Chariot.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Her Magitek Shapeshifter cubes appear forming the monster in Shiny Chariot's magic show, in the very opening scene of the TV series and a good twelve episodes before their full debut.
    • Young Croix was one of the winners of the Broom Race, shown in the wall of pictures.
    • Adult Croix was shown very briefly in the first opening song.
    • The flashback of Chariot that Akko witnesses at the fountain is also seen from her perspective, and while we don't see her, we hear her voice.
  • Easily Forgiven: While the ending implies she'll go to magic jail for her crimes, Headmistress Holbrooke still seems to be in good terms with her and the whole thing is left vague enough that she could receive just a light punishment. To say nothing of how Chariot was willing to risk her life for hers, despite all the crap she'd pulled.
  • Emotion Eater: In a roundabout way. Her techno-magic is powered by the Noire Fuel Spirit spell, which converts people's negative emotions into magical energy.
  • Engineered Heroics: In her debut episode, Croix impresses Akko with her use of modern magic and technology and seems to start slowly convincing her that it's better than traditional magic. However, the strike was exacerbated by a black fairy Lotte described as "like a machine" that she herself created.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Seems rather distressed when she thinks Chariot is about to fall to her death, even shouting her name and screaming for her to wake up. Ruining Chariot's dreams is one thing, killing her is another. Whatever animosity she has towards Chariot now apparently doesn't quite override the love she had for the person who was once her best friend. Later on, she's utterly horrified when Chariot risks her life to protect her from her rampaging machine dragon, and straight up tells her to just leave her behind because the dragon is only after Croix.
  • Everything Is An I Pod In The Future: Croix's Magitek devices have this aesthetic, compared with the more Steampunk and Schizo Tech stylings of Constanze.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Croix seems incapable of understanding not everyone is as motivated by self-interest as she is. Specifically, she thinks Chariot is merely using Akko as either a proxy to unlock the Grand Triskelion or a way to make up for past mistakes, which is why she is so shocked to see Chariot endanger herself in the name of Akko's safety.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • To Chariot/Ursula. Both were prodigies who used magic in unorthodox ways—Chariot used it for flashy performances, Croix used it for magitek. Croix manages to convince the magical establishment to accept her style of magic, while Chariot does not—but Croix has some secret evil scheme up her sleeve, of which only Chariot has any awareness.
    • To Diana, if you parallel Chariot to Akko. Both of them are The Chosen Wannabe and are very frustrated at the actual chosen one's lack of interest on their duty to restore magic. Diana, however, becomes quite respectful towards Akko after their times together, while Croix only develops strong envy against Chariot and proceeds to forcefully play her role in her stead by bypassing the traditional ways of opening the Grand Triskellion.
  • Evil Former Friend: Chariot and Croix used to be close friends in their school days, but their relationship slowly began to fall apart after Chariot was picked to be The Chosen One over Croix, despite seeming far inferior in terms of magical skill. The bitterness of the incident, along with Chariot seemingly prioritizing her dream of becoming an entertainer over her responsibilities as the wielder of the Claíomh Solais, would slowly eat away at Croix until she completely broke off their friendship and spent the next ten years resorting to less savory methods of accomplishing what Chariot could not. They do, however, set aside their personal conflicts to help save a country from being nuked into oblivion, and ultimately reconcile by the Grand Finale.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: It never occurred to Croix that powering her Noire Rod with an endless supply of negative emotions could cause it to overload into something she couldn't control.
  • Evil Is Petty: Croix could have picked any place to test her dream fuel spirit prototype, and chose to give it to Chariot to use, then tell her what it does after the fact. She did this to punish Chariot for "stealing" her dream.
  • Evil Knockoff: She created a darker/larger version of Chariot's rod, filled with malicious magic.
  • Evil Plan: Obsorb negative energy to shatter the seal on the Grand Triskellion, restore magic to its past glory, and become the world's greatest witch.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: She wears dark pink eyeshadow which seems to just scream her impending antagonist role. Perhaps symbolically, she lacks it from when she was still friends with Chariot as a teenager, and noticeably also loses it after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: As a teenager, she had shoulder-length Messy Hair, but as an adult, she has Power Hair. In the finale, she goes back to her old messy hairstyle after she decides to atone for all the problems she has caused.
  • Fatal Flaw: From day one, Croix's self-obsession was her downfall. Her goal of becoming the only person who would gain World Reconstruction Magic is heavily implied to be what made her unworthy of being the chosen one in the first place since the Final Word to awaken the Shiny Rod is about learning from and working with other people.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She acts extremely nice to the students and Akko and even saves the school from a crisis. In reality, she doesn't care about anyone. The only thing she cares about is herself and her mission of being the one to unlock the Grand Triskellion. She does this by starting a war between England and France, manipulating Chariot to steal the emotional energy from kids with the Dream Fuel Spirit, and attempting to murder Akko to spite Chariot.
  • Foil: To Chariot, especially during their school days:
Chariot is an Action Girl utilizing a lot of kicks and acrobatics in tandem with her magic, while Croix stays at a distance and lets her Powers Do the Fighting, mostly sending out weak attack drones or forming stronger monsters from her shapeshifting Emotion Eater Magitek cubes.
  • For the Evulz: She attempts to murder Akko just to spite Ursula and make her suffer.
  • Freudian Excuse: In a flashback sequence, it's shown that she was annoyed at how Chariot wasn't taking the Seven Words seriously. This combined with her jealousy over the fact that she wasn't the one chosen for the job instead lead her to become the Big Bad.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Develops technology that integrates science and magic entirely by herself, including Leyline routers that allow witches carrying them to use magic outside the range of a Sorcerer's Stone, bypassing one of their most significant restrictions.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Croix is usually a boy's name.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After it turns out that the world reconstruction magic she so coveted was nothing more than a twig that casts minor parlor spells for her, and requires the actual Shiny Rod and the Character Development it demands to bring out the magic's true potential, it doesn't take long for her to realize just how wrong she was to force her own way to it, and quickly resolves to protect Chariot from her now haywire machine.
  • High Collar of Doom: Wears a red cape with a really high collar which seems to just scream her impending antagonist role. Just look at it.
  • Invincible Villain: She claims pretty much everything that happens after she is introduced is part of her plan (and she claims she was observing the events prior to her introduction), despite the sheer amount of coincidences and lack of communication that was required to keep her and her plan safe. By the time anyone tries to seriously confront her, it's too late and the Big Damn Heroes moment is subverted. Even at the end, she essentially defeats herself, and while the final conflict is a result of her actions, it was never part of her plan and even she wants it stopped.
  • It's All About Me: Before her Heel–Face Turn in "The Road to Arcturus" she didn't care about anyone but herself and her goal, and even attempted to wage war between the UK and its neighboring country, all for the sake of proving herself to be the one worthy of accessing the world reconstruction magic. It ends up being her biggest downfall.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Big time. When she was a kid she wanted to become a powerful witch but ended up getting her heart filled with jealousy and spite because Ursula got the Shiny Rod before her. In her return on "Chariot of Fire" and onwards she uses Mind Probe on Akko and sends constant minions out at her, intentionally tries to kill her, destroy Ursula's dreams and use the negative emotions in a similar fashion to what Chariot did before to start off a war that could kill millions of people.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Despite Chariot being the one person other than herself whose well being she cares about on some level, she outright admits wanting to destroy Chariot's last dream.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Things get a lot more serious once she shows up. She's the type where she gets darker as the story carries on.
  • Lack of Empathy: When she reveals Dream Fuel Spirit's side effects to Chariot after it's already been used, she claims that a few muggles (or even one or two young witches) losing their magic potential due to it is a necessary sacrifice. Later on, her plan involves inciting hatred between two countries by rigging a football game and using their anger as fuel, which gets bad enough that it causes violent riots and nearly leads to them starting a war.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In the past, when Chariot was driven to use the First Word to shoot the moon in a moment of distress, Croix makes the audience forget the event.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: Calls her brand of Post-Modern Magik "sorcery."
  • Magitek: She specializes in "Modern Magic", which blends magic with cutting-edge technology.
  • Malicious Slander: Suggests to Akko that Ursula is not what she seems, planting lots of doubts in her.
  • Manipulative Bastard: She manipulates Akko to mistrust Ursula so she can make Ursula suffer. She also used Chariot's show to test her Dream Fuel Spirit without telling her of its side effects, most likely out of spite for her rival.
  • Meaningful Name: Just like Chariot du Nord (based on the northern Big Dipper asterism, called the Grand Chariot in France), Croix's name refers to the Crux constellation, which contains the Southern Cross and is only visible in the Southern Hemisphere. This makes her the "Croix du Sud" to Chariot's north. "Meridies" is also a term that can mean "south," furthering the contrast note
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: She manages to unlock the seal of the Grand Triskellion and acquires the world reconstruction magic... only to find out that she needed to go through the full journey the real Shiny Rod required to actually unlock its true potential, making it functionally useless to her who had undergone no Character Development and was still deep down Driven by Envy.
  • Mind Probe: Uses this on Akko to find out how she was able to use the Shiny Rod.
  • Most Definitely Not a Villain: Her High Collar of Doom outfit and her preference of the discouraged modern magic over the more positively-viewed traditional magic makes her role as an antagonist obvious to viewers, not so much the characters in-series though. Her Magitek's usefulness makes her arguments very appealing, and she could've just helped the school's energy crisis in the beginning if she wasn't restricted from using her machines in the first place. However, she instigated and escalated the strike that caused the energy crisis in order to make her magitek more appealing, and Finneran, the Obstructive Bureaucrat in question, is rightly suspicious of her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Once her machine starts running amok and actively starts trying to kill Chariot and her after she opens the Triskelion, she realizes she made a huge mistake in her methods.
    • Subtler than the previous example, but Croix didn't seem to foresee putting Chariot's life at legitimate risk when fighting her at Wagandea. After just barely saving her from falling to her death, Croix ceases all further attempts to impede her from going after Akko and looks rather anguished.
  • Mythology Gag: This isn't the first time that Studio Trigger has had a Big Bad named after the Southern Cross constellation.
  • Nerd Glasses: In her youth, she was very studious, reserved and she wore glasses.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: She claims her reasoning for opening the Grand Triskellion is to restore magic in its former place, but also seems greatly driven by the desire of just being the one to actually achieve that goal and her way of getting there includes causing riots in two rival countries and then feeding of their citizens' hatred towards the other, and she sees The Chosen One's way of going about it as naive. Supplementary info does clarify that the bulk of her motivations were genuinely driven by a desire to save the rapidly deteriorating state of magic in the present.
  • Perpetual Frowner: As seen in the character image, young Croix's default expression in most photographs seems to be that of a grumpy frown. The only exception to this seems to be the one she took together with Chariot, which Ursula still holds on to in the present day.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite her evil intentions, she's shown to still care about her past friendship with Chariot, as shown when Chariot was falling down unconscious in "Discipline", Croix managed to wake her up in time.
    • In spite of her teacher role having all been a facade for the sake of furthering her plan, Croix expresses genuine concern for the safety of her students in "Changing at the Edge of the World" when they're about to fly off and face the missile. She even considers herself and Chariot to be "failures as teachers" for letting the children go after it when it seems there's no possible way they'll be able to even catch up to it, much less defeat it.
  • The Resenter: Primarily motivated by jealously for not being picked to open the Grand Triskellion. It gets worse when the person actually picked to do it doesn't treat this as a priority in the slightest.
  • The Rival: The second opening compares her and Chariot to Akko and Diana, hinting they were rivals in their youth.
  • Secretly Selfish: In her younger years, Croix was irritated with Chariot for not taking her duty of unlocking the Seven Words seriously and restoring magic to the world, which worsened her frustration that she wasn't chosen for the job and was declined the opportunity to become the best witch in the world.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Back in her school years, her hair was long and messy while also sporting nerdy glasses. As a teacher, ten years later, she (probably) wears contacts with a new hairstyle and looks fantastic.
  • Stellar Name: Named after the Southern Cross constellation, known in French as the Croix du Sud. Appropriately for an opponent to Ursula, the Southern Cross is also used for locating the southern pole in celestial navigation.
  • Supervillain Lair: She sets one up in the New Moon tower, complete with numerous defenses, research equipment and of course a big blast door at the entrance.
  • Teen Genius: Several characters exposit that that in her student days, she was a talented and hardworking individual who, at the time, was the prodigy of Luna Nova (much like her generational counterpart Diana), and thus was expected to become a torch bearer to the future of the magical world (which she does, but not in the way that traditionalists had hoped).
  • Trademark Favorite Food: While studying things in her lair, she will eat Jalapeño-flavored spicy mentaikonote  cup ramen.
  • Troll: Besides her attitude towards Chariot, her primary activity is using her Magitek to fan aggression and cause riots. So that she can use Noire Fuel Spirit to absorb the violent emotions of the crowds.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Downplayed. During her school days, Croix was a senpai figure to Chariot—who frequently blundered her magic—and seemed to genuinely possess a passion for magic. It's implied that Croix's support and encouragement played a significant role in Chariot's pursuit of her dreams. And while it eventually morphed into resentment and bitterness, the flashback of Croix's that Akko witnesses in the Fountain of Polaris seem to indicate that her support of Chariot continued for some time even after she was rebuffed by the Claiomh Solais.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Is entirely responsible for the second half of the show being Darker and Edgier than the first by a long stretch and "Discipline" doesn't help matters. She wants Chariot to suffer, all for no reason other than Croix not having the Shiny Rod and seeks to destroy "her last dream" by messing with Akko's quest for the words. She even attempts to make Akko distrust Ursula and later has her machines attack Akko while she's trying to prevent Chariot from helping her and later, escalating a riot over a soccer verdict just to activate Noir Rod, the act that potentially made her an international criminal.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Towards Akko, because of her connection with the Shiny Rod/Claiomh Solais. She seemingly lets up after she tells Ursula that she didn't find anything inside Akko's head she didn't already know.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Completely despairs when she learns that the World Restoration Magic she had been so obssessed with does nothing for her (who gained none of the Character Development from completing the tests of the Claiomh Solais) but cast pretty but meaningless stage spells.
  • Villains Never Lie:
    • In "Discipline", she makes Akko doubt Ursula's honesty by pointing out various inconsistencies in her stories. The toxic flowers near Wagandea's roots aren't blooming, so she could have forbidden Akko from going near it out of another reason, and despite claiming to be Chariot's classmate, a person named Ursula Callistis has never even attended Luna Nova. Croix also claims Ursula might be hiding some other very important things from Akko. All of these are true from a certain angle, Ursula knew the upper portions of the tree were ready to bloom and tried to keep Akko away for that reason and Ursula's secret from her student years is that she herself is Chariot.
    • In "Things We Said Today", even though Akko does not immediately figure out Croix's involvement despite all the evidence leading to her and Akko not being a hard person to fool, Croix just gleefully admits to being behind everything involving the recurring cube monster incidents and fueling the citizens' rioting. Soon after spilling the beans, she makes Akko's mentor and idol, Ursula/Chariot confess that her actions in the past were in fact very similar to what Croix is doing right now.
  • Visual Pun: She has green eyes to match with the fact that she's Driven by Envy for Chariot.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Flashbacks have shown she and Chariot were rather close and they even tried to seek the Seven Words of Arcturus together. They departed Luna Nova as friends, but after Chariot stopped searching for the words in order to focus on her dream of being an entertainer, Croix's envy grew into genuine scorn and they separated on a bitter note after Croix's "poor timing" telling Chariot about the consequences of the Dream Fuel Spirit. Despite that, both have spoken very highly about the other, when they were asked about their school days. The ending implies that their friendship is on the mend.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Student example. During her Villainous Breakdown, Croix calls out Woodward for always overlooking her, hinting that her motivation behind all of her actions and crimes were to gain Woodward's approval.
  • Your Tradition Is Not Mine: Croix's "Sorcery" is rather unorthodox compared to the magic witches normally use, but it's also very cost efficient at what it does. The former is the primary reason why many older faculty members are initially mistrusting of it and the latter is one reason why her views on the future of magic resonate so well with Akko.
