Non-Magical Humans

    Thomas' Gang

Voiced by: Touko Aoyama (Japanese), Lucien Dodge (English) (Thomas), Marie Mizuno, Minoru Hirota (Japanese), Marin Miller, Jennifer Alyx (English) (other members)

Appearances: The Enchanted Parade

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thomas_gang.png

A band of troublemakers who heckle the witches at the Witch Parade every year.

  • Always Identical Twins: A couple of the members of the gang.
  • Jerkass: Throughout the entire movie. Even when Diana saves them from the rock monster, they're still mean to the witches.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After being saved by Diana and helping the witches save the citizens, Thomas decides witches aren't so bad. However, rather than apologizing to the girls, he and his gang start throwing tomatoes at them again not to try and haze them. This time, however, it's portrayed more like a game that the girls are willingly happy to play along in.
  • Keep Away: Because they want to go out of their way to make the Witch Parade as miserable an experience for the witches as possible, they decide to take the magic-infused Shiny Rod and pass it off to one another so the witches can't get to it.
  • Kids Are Cruel: No matter what happens during the Witch Parade, they do their best to humiliate and demean the witches there.
  • Precocious Crush: Implied. When Thomas is saved by Diana, he blushes upon seeing her face.
  • Would Hit a Girl: A couple of the male members have no problems directly hitting any of the witches as one of them hits Amanda with a bat, before Thomas performs a Diving Kick on her in the back shortly afterwards.

    Annabel Crème

Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi (Japanese), Cassandra Lee Morris (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lwa_annabel.jpg

The author of Night Fall, an incredibly popular Long Runner series of fantasy novels. "Annabel Crème" is actually a pseudonym, and the Annabel that appears in the series is the twelfth one.

  • Artist Disillusionment: invoked The author of the Night Fall book series is revealed to be a Legacy Character, with the most recent one wishing to pass on the role due to being a target of internet trolls. Lotte, the one who she tries to pass the role on, convinces her instead that for all the people who insult and mock her, there are many more who love her writing and genuinely appreciate her, which leads to her continuing the role.
  • Ascended Fangirl: The current Annabel was a big fan of the novels growing up, and initially jumped at the chance to write them.
  • Back for the Finale: She cameos again in the finale.
  • Contested Sequel: invoked The novels Annabel writes are these, as they are seen as unforeshadowed twists to some, but make sense to fans like Lotte.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 16 of the Keisuke Satō manga stars her, as it revolves around her going to Luna Nova to get ideas for a new novel.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She's a young girl who dresses in a floor-length, frilly black dress reminiscent of this style.
  • House Pseudonym: In-Universe. "Annabel Crème", author of the 365-volume Night Fall novel series, an obvious sendup of Twilight, is revealed to be a pseudonym of different authors, although in this case the name is handed down to a successor instead of used simultaneously for a whole circle of ghostwriters, making it overlap with Legacy Character. It becomes a minor plot point when Lotte is offered to write the latest sequel and in so doing become the next Annabel. The current one is a young girl, despite "Annabel" supposedly having written the series continuously for 120 years. Her real name isn't revealed, however.
  • Improbable Age: When Annabel (a young girl) appears onstage, the other characters remark that she's way too young to have been writing these novels for over a century, even for a witch. This is justified as she is too young, and she's the twelfth person to take up the pen name.
  • Legacy of the Chosen: The successor to the Annabel Crème name is chosen by the spirit in the fountain pen used in writing the novels.
  • No Name Given: While she is named Annabel Crème, the name is a pseudonym given to her by the spirit in the fountain spirit as opposed to it being her real name. Her real name is never revealed.
  • Reclusive Artist: invoked Prior to the Night Fall event, Annabel Crème had never made a public appearance. This is due to the fact that Annabel Crème is actually a Legacy Character, which isn't public knowledge.
  • Sesquipedalian Smith: A-nna-bel Crème. Notable because the name itself is a pseudonym, so the naming convention may have been chosen to make it catchier.
  • Tareme Eyes: She has droopy eyes.

    Earl Paul Hanbridge

Voiced by: Naoki Tamanoi (Japanese), Bill Rogers (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/earl_of_hanbridge.png

A muggle aristocrat who manages the county Luna Nova resides in. Father of Andrew.

  • Abusive Parents: While nowhere near the same level as other examples, he disallows Andrew doing what he thinks is fun and calls him stupid for doing such a thing.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Acts friendly and polite to the Luna Nova faculty while they're trying to be good hosts, but in private he expresses nothing but disdain for magic and its practitioners.
  • British Stuffiness: Not only does he have a disdain for magic and mages in general, but also muggle Lower Class Louts as well, as can be seen from his comments over some footie rioting.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: He has a pretty uncanny resemblance to Colin Firth, especially as he looks on the Kingsman film series.
  • Evil Brit: Subverted. While he isn't evil, he's a British aristocrat who doesn't care for Luna Nova at all, and wouldn't shed a single tear if it disappeared.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: He prevented Andrew from pursuing his passion as a pianist in order to focus on becoming a politician.
  • Knight Templar Parent: The main apparent reason for his Fantasy-Forbidding Father tendencies.
  • Lord Country: Implied. Judging by the fact that Paul is the Earl of Hanbridge, it is safe to assume that Paul and Andrew Hanbridge share their surname with the name of the country their family rules over.
  • Muggles Do It Better: A firm believer that it's better to be normal than to be a magical being, feeling that magic has become completely irrelevant.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Appears to be based on Colin Firth's portrayal of Harry Hart in Kingsman.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Exactly What It Says on the Tin, being a Government minister who's somehow responsible for Luna Nova, but not believing in magic in the slightest.
  • Preppy Name: Inverted. "Paul" isn't generally thought of as an upper-class name in the UK.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: Never actually loses his cool onscreen.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Andrew gets his facial structures and green eyes from him, and the only real difference is that Lord Hanbridge is an older man with grey hair and bigger body type.

    Lord Andrew Hanbridge

Voiced by: Ryousuke Kanemoto (Japanese), Lucien Dodge (English)Other Languages

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andrew_hambridge.jpg

A muggle young viscount from Appleton who thinks magic is outdated. However, ever since meeting Akko, it seems that his views on magic are changing. He has a Bromantic Foil named Frank.

  • Ambiguously Related: It's implied that he and Diana are related as he stated in "Bee Affection" that the Hanbridge and Cavendish families have been closely entwined for years and when asked by Akko if the two are relatives during the car ride in "Cavendish", he replies to the question with "sort of". It's unclear though if the two are actually related in a literal sense or a more metaphorical one and if the former, what their relation is?
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Andrew directs a delayed-action one at Akko in "Things We Said Today":
Andrew: "Instead of waiting for Chariot, shouldn't you be the one to do it?" ("it" being about making people happy with magic)
  • Brainy Brunette: Has been the top of his class for three years straight, and can also read Latin.
  • Broken Ace: He is the top student at his academy, good-looking, plays the piano perfectly despite not having touched it in ten years (which he might've been practicing in secret), and is the heir of a noble bloodline. However, he is being pressured by his father to become a statesman, just like him. His father also doesn't allow him to do whatever he thinks is fun and calls him stupid for wanting to play the piano. His father practically controls his life.
  • Character Development: Spending time with Akko gives Andrew a more rebellious streak in the sense that while he still admires his father, he doesn't have to agree with all of his father's beliefs. At the start of the story, he more or less agrees with his father that magic is a relic of the past not worth saving. By the end of the series he places all his faith in Akko and Diana to save the day with their magic.
  • Chick Magnet: Almost all of the students of Luna Nova find him attractive. Even as a child, he had three girls around him.
  • Childhood Friends: He has known Diana since they were children, making it seem like they've been longtime friends. However the trope is subverted, as they admit that neither of them exchanged more than a “hello,” they don't remember each other clearly, and they didn't have much in common as kids in the first place. He does, however, provide a little bit of exposition on Diana's past when it comes up.
  • The Comically Serious: Nothing magical phases him, not even suffering from a Little Bit Beastly spell Akko accidentally put on both him.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He gradually loosens up around Akko and dropping his initially cold demeanor.
  • Does Not Like Magic: Downplayed. He doesn't hate magic per-se, but he initially shared his father's opinion that magic is outdated and has no place in today's society. He slowly grows out of this mindset over the course of the series however, largely thanks to Akko.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: "Bee Affection" reveals that he's quite the talented pianist, adding to his graceful albeit snobby demeanor.
  • Foil:
    • To Diana. Both come from famous, wealthy aristocratic British families, considered good-looking, talented in their respective fields, and start off as snobbish and cold jerks, but with a softer side underneath that becomes more prominent over time. However, they both have some notable differences. Diana comes from a magical family and her main goal is to restore the magic in the world and make it respected; Andrew comes from a non-magical family and thinks magic is outdated. Andrew is more sociable than Diana, often interacting with his peers and hosting formal parties, whereas Diana is largely secluded, being largely isolated from her peers and preferring to focus on her studies than to go to parties. Andrew also grows fond of Akko rather quickly, only interacting with her a couple of times before becoming friends with her. By contrast, it took some time for Diana to grow fond of Akko, only becoming friends with her by the last few episodes of the series. Diana is also much more outspoken against her family for abandoning their values from the offset, whereas Andrew started off as being obedient to his father, only becoming more rebellious thanks to Akko.
    • The Perspective Flip in the manga he gets for the Fountain of Polaris arc reveals he's this to Louis as well. Both are aristocratic young men with politically active fathers with a negative view on magic. Andrew however just finds magic silly and outdated while Louis is actively hostile to magic and wants to persecute mages. Andrew also learns to appreciate magic via taking an interest in Akko and becoming her friend, while Louis has to go under Defeat Means Friendship and a rescue by Amanda after a duel to change his mind. Demeanor wise, Andrew is a dark haired and stoic Defrosting Ice King while Louis was a brash and smug blond before he Took a Level in Kindness and humility.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Is being groomed into becoming a politician like his father, though "Bee Affection" indicates that he's not all that content with the prospect.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Andrew apparently has the same combed and slicked back hairstyle from when he was a young boy.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Close to Frank — they are best friends and despite their opposing personalities, both seem to get along very well, having enough confidence to talk about their most personal matters.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Albeit he argues otherwise, it's rather obvious that Andrew doesn't want to conform to his father's laid plan for his life. He does state that even though he doesn't intend to antagonize his father, it's logical that there are topics on which they will not agree on regardless.
    • Although he says that he dislikes magic and its study, his behavior when faced with situations that involved its use suggests that Andrew is open to its practical use, changing the perspective of his initial words towards Akko, in which he questioned its purpose and practicality.
    • In "The Road to Arcturus", Andrew is visibly distressed and even protests his father and another politician over taking advantage of the chaos and tension occurring in the London streets to go to war with their enemy country. In other words, though Andrew is a serious young man who is on the path to being a politician, his sense of righteousness is strong enough to want to keep innocent people safe.
  • Indifferent Beauty: He is considered Tall, Dark, and Handsome by almost all of the students in Luna Nova, but he doesn't particularly care. Played for Laughs whenever he ignores his crowds of fan girls, which has apparently been a thing since childhood.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Although he doesn't really look that different from other male characters, he's described to be very attractive so often that "handsome" is almost The Magnificent for him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Andrew is basically a male version of Diana. Icy, haughty attitude but ultimately a good person.
  • Lord Country: Implied. Judging by the fact that Paul is the Earl of Hanbridge, it is safe to assume that Paul and Andrew Hanbridge share their surname with the name of the country their family rules over.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Andrew serves a rather typical shoujo male love interest role to Akko. He starts off as a cold and stand-offish guy that was intially aloof to the female protagonist (in this case Akko), but over the course of the story, gradually warms up to her and becomes fond of her by the end. Now, one familiar with his archetype would expect him to fall in love with Akko and become the Official Couple with her by the end, however, despite some minor Ship Tease between them in earlier episodes, Andrew and Akko's relationship never becomes anything more than a platonic bond, with Yoshinari explictly describing their relationship as being a "guy-guy friendship". note
  • Perspective Flip: The manga adaptation of the Fountain of Polaris story is largely retold from his POV, including a confrontation he had with Louis in Appleton before visiting Luna Nova.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: He fits the stereotype of British men as Tall, Dark, and Handsome with pale skin.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Word of God confirms that he and Akko have a "guy-guy friendship." invoked
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Always seen in an impeccable suit.
  • Ship Tease: Gets quite a bit of teasing with Akko, as she is one of the few people willing to treat him like a normal person and he is frequently awed by her passion for magic. There is also a bit with him and Diana, as the two might not get along but if they are in the same room they will most likely seek each other out to trade barbs while grinning. Both Akko and Diana have a light Slap-Slap-Kiss type of vibe with him.
  • Sliding Scale of Beauty: He is a World Class beauty. Almost all of the students of Luna Nova find him attractive.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: His favorite mutual pastime with Diana.
  • Spoiler Opening: Has a cameo in the first opening, but doesn't appear until "The Fountain".
  • Stiff Upper Lip: British and stoic, through and through.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He is quite reserved and indifferent, but he is also a good and compassionate person when he should be.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Has dark brown hair, stands a full head taller than Akko, and is often stated to be quite handsome.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Quite a master of understated sarcasm.

    Frank

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Japanese), Ben Diskin (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frank_little_witch_academia_tv_121186.jpg

A muggle who is the best friend of Andrew Hanbridge. In contrast to Andrew, Frank is a cheerful and friendly man who admires magic and witches a ton.

  • Bromantic Foil: Andrew is a serious, aloof, dark-haired man with a disinterest in magic; Frank is a light-hearted, friendly, blonde man who has an interest in magic.
  • Foil: Besides being a Bromantic Foil to Andrew, he's also a foil to Hannah and Barbara — they're best friends of an aloof aristocrat, to the point of just being a Satellite Character for that said friend, but while Hannah and Barbara are stuck-up girls who constantly belittle Akko, Frank is a nice person who is delightedly surprised of whatever influence she has on Andrew.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A friendly young man with dark blonde hair in general.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Close to Andrew — they are best friends and despite their opposing personalities, both seem to get along very well, having enough confidence to talk about their most personal matters.
  • Muggle with a Degree in Magic: Downplayed. While he isn't implied to be an expert by all means, he's shown to have a keen interest in witchcraft the other muggles (besides Akko) lack and is implied to have a bit of knowledge about the magical world (such as knowing they have their own version of the internet).
  • Nice Guy: He's cheerful, friendly, and has good manners.
  • Satellite Character: He hangs around to commentate on Andrew's affairs.
  • Shipper on Deck: Possibly rooting for Andrew and Akko, given his delightfully surprised reaction over how Akko manages to slightly change Andrew's views on magic.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Gender Inverted. He takes a genuine interest in Lotte because she's a good-hearted girl that is hard to come by.

    Louis Blackwell

Voiced by: Yū Miyazaki (Japanese), Kyle McCarley (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/00000597.jpg

The son of the Minsiter of Defense, Louis is a arrogant and sinister man who hates witches just as much as his father does.

  • Defeat Means Friendship: Upon getting defeated and than rescued by Amanda, he gains a newfound appreciation for witches and renounces his bigotry for them.
  • Fantastic Racism: Like his father, Louis is shown to have a prejduiced view against witches, even threatening to execute Amanda and Akko upon finding them out. Fortunately, he changes his mind after Amanda defeats and saves him.
  • Foil: The Keisuke Satō manga reveals him to be one to Andrew. Both are famous young men whose fathers are against magic and witchcraft, on top of despising it themselves, until changing their minds later on. However, whereas Andrew merely finds magic to be outdated and silly, Louis is outright bigoted against witches and actively goes of his way to execute Amanda and Akko upon seeing them, and whereas Andrew gradually learns to appreciate magic thanks to Akko, Louis doesn't change his mind until after he quickly gets defeated and rescued by Amanda.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Upon getting rescued by Amanda, Louis quickly realizes how wrong he was about witches and renounces his former ways.
  • Sore Loser: Despite saying he'll give the grail if he loses to Amanda, upon actually getting defeated by her, he, angry and unwilling to accept losing to a witch, breaks the grail anyway.

Other Magical Residents

    The Shooting Star

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4fd95718_3146_491f_a2a2_52abdd213f52.png

A legendary custom-made sentient broom that is capable of reaching insanely fast speeds and is very wild and hard to control.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Due to being infused with Magic. In contrast to other brooms, the shooting star is easily capable of moving on its own and even has some degree of sentience (though it doesn’t talk).
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Akko and Diana are on the verge of failing to defeat the missile in the finale, the shooting star manages to save Akko (who would quickly save Diana afterwards) in the nick of time, giving the two the advantage needed to defeat the missile.
  • Red Is Violent: A red colored broom that is famously very wild and hard to control, so much so that it was sealed up until Amanda stole it and subsequently freed by Akko.
  • Sudden Anatomy: The broom is shown to sprout wings and a tail upon being freed from its chains by Akko.

    Fafnir

Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka (Japanese), Michael Sorich (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fafnir_6.png
"To think that there were still humans with that look in their eyes."

An ancient dragon with longstanding financial dealings with Luna Nova.

  • Bait-and-Switch: When we're first introduced to him, he appears to be a monstrous, horrifying beast within the shadows... then the lights come up and all we see is a grumpy old guy in a robe.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has grey, thick, long eyebrows that go to below his jaw.
  • Corporate Dragon: Fafnir is a dragon who runs his hoard like a venture capitalist and loan shark.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: The show plays at him being a standard "pillage and hoard" dragon, but it turns out he's moved with the times and become a venture capitalist (with a bit of loan sharking on the side).
  • Dragon Hoard: He's a dragon who has chosen to adapt to modern times by becoming an online stock broker and a Loan Shark.
  • Gentle Giant: Played with. He's an unscrupulous Loan Shark who tired to scam Luna Nova and stole their Sorcerer's Stone, but he is nonetheless a very non-violent dragon, to the point of being nearly appalled when the girls assume he's going to eat them. He is also very big.
  • Greed: No surprise that the dragon is greedy. He's not above some "creative" bookkeeping to keep his income rolling in either (see below).
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Fafnir's plan to get the Luna Nova faculty to default on their annual interest payments relied on nobody being able to read the original promissory note (which didn't actually include interest in the first place). Diana unsurprisingly can not only read Old Draconic but was able to point out that Luna Nova had paid off the principal ages ago, so now he owed them money.
  • Loan Shark: Loaned a huge amount of money to Luna Nova a thousand years ago. His theft of the Sorcerer's Stone is because the faculty failed to make the payment he asked for.
  • Meaningful Name: Fafnir in Norse Mythology was a human who turned into a dragon. Fafnir in Little Witch Academia is symbolically the opposite; A dragon who turned human-like. Norse!Fafnir was also known to be greedy, which fits LWA!Fafnir to a T.
  • Mecha-Mooks: The wyverns he uses to take the Sorcerer's Stone and guard his lair are actually animatronic.
  • Villain Respect: Despite (or because of) being extremely cynical, Akko's vigorous defense of magic actually seems to impress him a little, and he takes the time to debate her on the subject and ignore her rudeness towards him.

The Blue Moon Spirit (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Professor Woodward

Voiced by: Mitsuko Horie (Japanese), Tara Sands (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lwa_woodward_2.JPG
Click here to see her in her true form.

A specter that appears once in a blue moon and can answer any question. In between all that, she's the ghost of one of the Nine Olde Witches, and a personal friend of Chariot's.

  • Aesop Enforcer: Is somewhat directly responsible for punishing Croix for her self-centric attitude towards magic in pretty much every stage of her life. This backfires horribly as this what starts Croix's Start of Darkness.
  • Big Sister Mentor: Was a friendly and helpful figure to Chariot in her youth. However, it's revealed that the relationship leans more towards on the aloof side.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Is implied to operate on this in later episodes. While Woodward isn't evil by any means and has good intentions to revive magic, she isn't really morally good either as she is not only emotionally distant from others, but seems to be driven only by her goal to revive magic and never really seems to consider how she and her actions could affect others, nor does she seem to really care. Justified given she's a thousand year old witch who isn't truly human anymore.
  • Broken Pedestal: She becomes this to Croix after she ignored the latter for so many years. Chariot also lost faith in her mentor if her despaired look is anything to go by.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has green hair and green eyes.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: To the Mentor Archetype. It has been subtly hinted at throughout the series but it's only in Episode 24 that it is brought to light. Woodward, while powerful and adept in her craft of magic, but is unable to do anything else, not even connect with other people in a deep emotional level which implied to be the reason why she failed when she had the Shiny Rod and ultimately the main reason why both the first and second Quests had failed too. Her cold nature makes her callously uses methods to guide the chosen bearers of the Shiny Rod albeit at the cost of physically and mentally harming them and those around them. She also never considers that doing more for the bearers other than magic lessons could have benefited the Quest in the long run like vouching for them to the other traditionalist witches so that they can have an easier time in their lives or informing the bearer about a friend who has severe emotional problems so that they can fix it. When the second Quest failed, Woodward does not have any words to say to Chariot and Croix and instead chooses to flee from them.
  • Disappointed in You: She certainly looks angry towards Croix and possibly even towards, Chariot for ruining the Quest once again.
  • Dramatic Wind: Her hair and clothes constantly fly in the wind.
  • Enigmatic Empowering Entity: Offers to grant Akko powers and a future similar to Chariot when they first meet, but it turns out to be a Secret Test of Character.
  • Facial Markings: Has a blue-green marking on her forehead.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Was one of the founders of Luna Nova.
  • Green Thumb: It's a mystery whether that she Was Once a Man or has always been a Plant Person.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has a pair of branches on her head.
  • Karma Houdini: She never receives any punishment for driving Croix into villainy nor her other actions that has harmed Chariot and Akko.
  • Magic Mirror: She is one in her second appearance, appearing as a mirror with magical abilities.
  • The Marvelous Deer: Her branch-like horns resemble stag antlers, and her nose a snout. The stag is a symbol of the wilderness and ancient knowledge, so it's a suitable motif for what appears to be a Nature Spirit.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Has solid, luminescent green eyes.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Chariot comes to realize that Woodward has a lot in common with the current Witches: incompetent at anything outside of magic, pushing heavy responsibilities onto others and ignoring anyone that doesn't meet their expectations.
  • Obsolete Mentor: She is one of the Nine Olde Witches and a founder of Luna Nova. However, magic is disappearing from the world, and the only way to restore it is to unlock the Grand Triskellion. If magic isn't restored, then it'll eventually disappear and have no more use in the modern world and the future. Given the fact that she's currently a spirit, Woodward can't unlock them herself. As such, she mentored Chariot to unlock the Grand Triskellion in order to restore magic and currently (indirectly) mentors Akko to carry out the task. Unfortunately, it becomes clear that her outdated and high-risk methods of teaching and cold negligence is providing evidence that magic is no more of use today. Magic is saved in the end but it is only due to Akko forsaking the old traditions and embracing a new path for magic leaving Woodward somewhat obsolete although the ancient witch doesn't mind.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the Quest fails a second time, Woodward just disappears, leaving Chariot and Croix behind.
  • Secret Test of Character: Tests Akko's ambitions as a witch in the climax of "Blue Moon", offering to let Akko go into the future and be like Shiny Chariot right away in exchange for forgetting her past (hence forgetting all her friends and struggles).
  • Sliding Scale of Anthropomorphism: She has that little black snout every dog-person had in DuckTales (1987), so that puts her on the heavy side of Little Bit Beastly.
  • Spoiler Opening: Did you spend the first ten episodes asking “who the heck is that woman who hangs from the sky for half a second?” Now you know.
  • The Stoic: She has a rather stoic expression on her in most cases, fitting her emotionally distant personality.
  • Trickster Mentor: Her lessons greatly rely on a Secret Test of Character. Deconstructed severely, given that her emotional distance from her students makes her unable to see just how damaging her actions affect them and everyone around. This what causes Croix to feel neglected, something that seems to fuel her desperation to unlock the Grand Triskellion and, by extension, her willingness to resort to less scrupulous methods to do so.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her neglecting Croix is what drives her to sabotage Chariot and later down the line, the whole Noir Roid dilemma.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Can not only make herself look like anything, but she can also make anybody look like anything. However, her Default Form is the most attractive, and comes with a Pimped-Out Dress.
  • Walking Spoiler: Keeps her name a secret and dumps exposition as if she wrote it down on flashcards earlier.
  • The Watcher: Only support chosen ones indirectly, having seemingly only interacted with each of them once during their journey.

    Vajarois the Grieving

Voiced by: Eri Nakao

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vajarois.jpg
Click here to see her real appearance.

A vicious ghost creature released every year as part of the Samhain Festival at Luna Nova. Sacrifices are "fed" to Vajarois as part of Luna Nova tradition.

  • Excessive Mourning: Invoked and exaggerated. Vajarois consumed the Seed of Sadness so she would never forget her deceased friends and thus continued mourning for 1600 years, turning into a wailing ghost in the process.
  • Gratuitous Princess: Vajarois started out as a cheerful girl from a royal family, and reverts to her appearance in life once the curse is broken. As her main purpose in the story is to be a scary ghost, there's no real reason for her to be a princess as well.
  • Human Sacrifice: Three students are "sacrificed" to Vajarois every year.
  • The Magnificent: "Vajarois the Grieving."
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: And serve to make her look more terrifying as a ghost.
  • Swallowed Whole: The students chosen to be the sacrifices end up swallowed whole by her. It's harmless, though.
  • Womb Level: The climax of "Samhain Magic Festival" takes place in Vajarois's belly as Akko unlocks the third Word pulling out the Seed of Sadness.

    Beatrix Cavendish

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beatrix_5.png

One of the Nine Olde Witches, and the founder of the Cavendish family.

  • Ethereal White Dress: Her ghost appears wearing white robes and a large white cloak.
  • Famous Ancestor: The noble Cavendish family descends from her — she's one of the most powerful witches in history.
  • The Magnificent: Known as "Beatrix the Affectionate", due to being characterized by her kindness.
  • Unicorn: One of her personal symbols, in keeping with her reputation as a kind and benevolent witch. A tapestry of her petting a unicorn resides in the Cavendish manor.
  • White Magician Girl: By reputation, she was a lovely and kind woman. She was famous for her healing and revitalization magic, which became her descendants' specialization through the centuries. For bonus points, her hat (as memorialized in Luna Nova) was notably white.

    Bernadette Cavendish

Voiced by: Marie Ōi (Japanese), Dorothy Elias-Fahn (English)

Appearances: TV Series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bernadette_cavendish.jpg

Diana's deceased mother and the former head of the family. She is a kind and caring person whose death had greatly affected Diana.

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She had passed away roughly ten years prior to the events of the TV series and is considered to be a good person by Diana and the house staff.
  • Good Parents: The little we know about her heavily suggests she was this to Diana prior to her death. She also supported Diana's love of Shiny Chariot, even letting her go to Japan to see one of her shows.
  • Hidden Eyes: Her sole speaking appearance in "Cavendish" has her eyes kept hidden.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Her one speaking appearance has her cough at one point, foreshadowing her eventual death.
  • Minor Major Character: Bernadette is one of the most important characters in the series, with her death being the catalyst for the Cavendish family's downfall under her sister's control in the present day. Despite this, she is a minor character who only properly appears and speaks at the very beginning of "Cavendish", with her next appearance afterwards only showing her from the back.
  • Nice Girl: She is considered to be a very kind, selfless and caring person by Diana and the staff.
  • Posthumous Character: She had passed away prior to the events of the TV series and is only featured in flashbacks.

    Daryl, Maril and Merill Cavendish

Daryl is voiced by: Shinobu Adachi (Japanese), Jessica Straus (English)

Maril is voiced by: Arisa Date (Japanese), Dorothy Elias-Fahn (English)

Merill is voiced by: Haruka Mikami (Japanese), Sarah Anne Williams (English)

Appearances: TV Series

Maril on the left, Merill on the right, Daryl in the middle.

Diana's surviving relatives. Daryl is Diana's aunt who is supposed to be the caretaker of the Cavendish estate until Diana finishes schooling. Her poor management has led to her selling off priceless artifacts and treasures, forcing Diana to quit Luna Nova and rush home to stop her. She is backed by her two daughters, Maril and Merill, who are just as greedy and selfish as their mother.

Tropes exclusive to Daryl
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes. She uses them as familiars, her eyes are shaped like them, and she is quite deceptive.
  • Black Sheep: She is implied to be this for the Cavendish family, who are stated by Diana to be a family of doctors and healers who use their magic selflessly for the benefit of helping others. Daryl on the other hand, is selfish and greedy Evil Aunt who uses magic to achieve her own goals instead of helping others.
  • Driven by Envy: As she sees Diana leave back for the academy, it is implied that she was jealous of her sister.
  • Evil Aunt: She had tried to sabotage Diana's trial to become the head of the Cavendish family (which is Diana's birthright) and has been spending the family's fortune to the point of near bankruptcy to fuel her selfish lifestyle.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Daryl is usually a man's name.
  • Girl Posse: Has one in the form of her twin daughters and Diana’s cousins, Maril and Merrill, who are just as bad as their mother.
  • Heel Realization: Sort of. Her attitude doesn't change, but, after Diana saves her and her daughters from becoming trees, she seems to have at least realized her foolishness and accepts that Diana will be a great matriarch of the family when the time comes.
  • Lady in a Power Suit: Daryl is the current matriarch of the family and is shown to don a dress/suit combo when she welcomes the Hanbridges and first meets Akko.
  • Makeup Is Evil: She wears dark blue lipstick.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Her last-minute attempt to interfere with the ritual does prevent Diana from completing it, but only because Diana chose to save her and her daughters from the magical punishment inflicted upon them for interrupting. Since the Cavendish legacy was built on helping anyone in need, including enemies, Diana more than proved her worth, even earning the approval of Beatrix, founder of the Cavendish family and one of the Nine Olde Witches, despite not formally earning the right to become the head of the household. Humbled, Daryl concedes that Diana is truly the deserving heir and ends her scheming.
  • Ms. Red Ink: Her poor management is threatening to bankrupt the Cavendish estate.
  • Mystical White Hair: Like Diana, she has platinum blonde hair and is a witch.
  • Obviously Evil: Animal Motif associated with snakes, glowing red eyes, blending into shadows? Yep, definitely not one of the good guys.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In an early scene, she fades out leaving only glowing red eyes.
  • Smug Snake: She even has a snake as a familiar.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She, her sister, her twin daughters, and her niece have fair skin and platinum blonde hair with tea-green highlights.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Technically an aunt, but fills this role and trope.

Tropes exclusive to Maril and Merill

  • Clashing Cousins: They do not get along with Diana and actively attempt to stop her from becoming head alongside their mother.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: They are just as awful and greedy as their mother.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Them discussing the plan outside was how Akko and Andrew find out about Daryl's Evil Plan, leading to Diana's rescue and Daryl's plot getting foiled.
  • Single-Minded Twins: Outside of having differently colored dresses, different voices and their hair being mirrored, they are effectively the same character.
  • Theme Twin Naming: They are named Maril and Merill.
  • Undying Loyalty: They are both insanely loyal to their mother and actively assists her in achieving her plans to become head.

    Croix's life work (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

The Noir Rod

Appearances: TV Series

Click here to see its final form

The Noir Rod is Professor Croix's life's work, the Evil Counterpart to the Shiny Rod. Croix plans to use it to forcibly open the Grand Triskellion and restore the world's magic by empowering it with negative emotions, but as it absorbs these emotions and becomes more powerful, it slowly begins developing a malicious personality and consciousness of its own.

  • Eldritch Abomination: It quickly veers into this territory by the finale.
  • Evil Counterpart: Is one to the Shiny Rod.
  • Expy:
    • Due to its serpentine features upon gaining sentience, briefly interfering Ley Lines, and aiming to destroy the world, remnants of Yggdrasil, Noir Rod is Little Witch Academia's take on either dragon Nidhogg or world serpent Jormungandr from Norse Mythology.
    • It's also one to the Red Briton Dragon from the first film, being a beast powered by magic, on top of having a similar black and red color scheme to it. It even gets destroyed the same way as it, by imploding after swallowing one of the Shiny Rod's arrows. To drive the point even further, the form it takes on in "A Road to Arcturus" has a heavy resemblence to the dragon.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Croix intended it to simply be the tool she needed to open the Grand Triskellion. She never intended for it to become sentient, much less malicious.
  • Meaningful Name: Noir means Black. It's the Black rod counterpart to the Shiny rod.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one right before being blown to smithereens by Akko and Diana's ultimate attack that it tried to swallow whole, silencing it for good, and preventing its murderous intent to be a Beast of the Apocalypse.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: After seemingly being defeated by Akko and Chariot, it possesses and mutates a nuke and tries to destroy the world purely out of spite.
  • The Power of Hate: It is literally powered by the hatred and anger of the rioters in the final act, which may explain why it tries to nuke the world out of pure spite in the ending.
  • Shapeshifter: During the final battle, it shifts from a spider-like beast, to a dragon, and finally a nuclear missile, though it had to possess one first to truly mutate the nuke into a Beast of the Apocalypse.
  • True Final Boss: Even after Croix surrenders, the Noir Rod is still determined to complete its mission, no matter the cost.
  • Walking Spoiler: Its mere presence in the series is a spoiler in of itself, as it doesn't make its first proper appearance until "Discipline" and was only hinted at prior.

Manga exclusive characters

    Lemmy

Appearances Little Witch Academia (Teri Terio)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/29371dae_7c06_47e3_b777_65c500517fa6.jpeg

A gollum that Akko created and who she became very fond of.

  • Canon Foreigner: He is created specifically for the manga.
  • Gentle Giant: Well, he isn't giant per-se, but he grows to be very big and is a very gentle creature, unless you harm his master.
  • It Can Think: He, unlike other golems, is smart enough to deduct on his own that Akko won't be able to use any magic for as long as he exists. He rectifies this problem by deliberately attacking Diana and her clique, forcing Akko to destroy him.
  • Suicide by Cop: Upon realizing that his existence prevents Akko from being able to use magic at all, he attacks Diana, Hannah, and Barbara against Akko's command to stand down, forcing her to destroy him by breaking the rune on his forehead.

    Mrs. Manbavaran

Appearances Little Witch Academia (Teri Terio)

Sucy's mother in the Teri Terio manga. She is quite strict and no nonsense. Like Sucy, she can be really scary when angered.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Her eyes are obscured behind her hair.
  • Berserk Button: Throwing a stuffed toy in her face is not recommended unless you want to face her wrath, as Sabi and Gabi find out.
  • Canon Foreigner: She only appears in the Teri Terio manga. There were plans to have her in the first short film, but those plans were scrapped.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: In contrast to Sucy, who is mischievous and snarky, Mrs. Manbavaran is shown to be insanely strict and no nonsense, demanding proper behavior from her daughters.
  • Smoking Is Glamorous: She is frequently shown to be smoking with a cigarette holder.
  • Tough Love: She is quite strict and has a low tolerance for antics from her daughters, but she does love them nevertheless.

    Sabi and Garie Manbavaran

Appearances: Little Witch Academia (Teri Terio)

Sabi on the left, Garie on the right

Two of Sucy's mischievous younger sisters, who are prone to being causing trouble.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Sucy regards them as being annoying and even their mother is shown to have little patience for their antics.
  • Always Identical Twins: The two look exactly alike aside from their hairstyle, which is the only way to tell the two part.
  • Canon Foreigner: Like their mother, they are made exclusively for Teri Terio's manga.

    Yuuto Minazuki

Appearances: Little Witch Academia: The Midnight Crown

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/730b709a_d224_4ae8_91c0_6eecbeb39ffa.png

Akko's childhood friend. Yuuto is one of the wizards who participates in the Academia contest for the Midnight Crown.

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: He is essentially a male version of Diana Cavendish. He is a talented and intelligent witch who can stand toe to toe with Diana, but he is also haughty and cold to those he sees as inferior, including his childhood friend Akko.
  • Canon Foreigner: He is a wizard exclusive to The Midnight Crown and is notably one of the few wizards shown in the franchise.
  • Childhood Friend: He is a childhood friend of Akko's and like her, is a fan of Shiny Chariot who took up magic to become a wizard.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears behind a young Akko in the flackback to Chariot's show, several pages in before his actual appearance.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He comes off as cold and aloof early on and is a bit of a jerk towards Akko, but later chapters show he does genuinely cares for Akko, to the point that he shielded her from a shower of shards from the Chariot apparition.
  • Ship Tease: Has a decent amount with Akko throughout the manga. They don't get together by the end though.
  • Taking the Bullet: He uses his own body to shield Akko from a shower of shards. Thankfully he survives.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Akko mentions how he used to be a very sweet kid back when they were children, as opposed to the haughty and aloof jerk he is now.

    Mirage

Appearances: Little Witch Academia (Keisuke Sato)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f81e817b_243b_453b_8e4b_32e00ff06bac.png

A mysterious witch who looks a bit like Chariot. She competes against Akko in the tri-school broom relay race in Keisuke Satō's manga.

  • Ambiguously Human: While Mirage appears to look like a human, she (and the other witches that competed against Luna Nova) is actually a dryad that Woodward recruited in order to test Akko.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She initially comes off as friendly and she and Akko hit it off immediately over their shared fondness over Shiny Chariot. However, her true colors begin to show once she demands the Shiny Rod in exchange of showing Akko how to fly, culminating in her pushing Akko off the ledge and stealing the rod. Luckily Diana was there to save her in time.
  • Canon Foreigner: She, alongside the other witches who raced against the Luna Nova students, are made exclusively for Keisuke Satō's manga.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Like her idol, Mirage has matching red eyes and hair.
  • Dub Name Change: The English translation of the manga calls her Miraj as opposed to Mirage.
  • Evil Counterpart: She acts as one to Akko. While she's more skilled than Akko, like her, she is an upbeat, energetic, selfish and arrogant girl who idolizes Chariot. However, whearas Akko is a good-hearted and caring person in spite of her flaws, Mirage is shown to be a villainous Jerkass who not only steals the rod from Akko, but tries to harm her by pushing her off the ledge.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Mirage is shown to have cross-shaped pupils, which acts as subtle foreshadowing to the reveal that she isn't a human.
  • Foil: Is one to Diana in regards to their relationship with Akko. Like Diana, she acts as a rival figure to Akko and both are shown to look down on her. However, whereas Diana is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who, despite not getting along with Akko (at least early on), genuinely cares about her deep down, Mirage is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who seemingly gets along with Akko at first, only to reveal that she cares little about her and considers her to be nothing but a failure after her true colors are revealed.
  • Foreshadowing: During the final stretch between Mirage, Akko and Diana, Mirage spawns leaves and trees to interfere with the duo's efforts, both of which foreshadow the fact that she's not actually human, but a dryad.
  • Graceful Loser: Implied. While not made explicit, Mirage doesn't appear to take it too hard after losing to Akko as she smiles at the end after Akko celebrates her victory and the fact she finally used magic.
  • Green Thumb: Is able to summon trees and leaves, which she uses against Akko and Diana during the race. Justified as she is later shown to be a dryad.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Some panels have her hair cover one of her eyes, suiting her deceptive and manipulative nature.
  • Meaningful Name: Mirage tends to refer to an illusion, which alludes to the fact that she's not actually a human, but a dryad merely posing as one. The name could also reflect her nature as a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Plant People: She and the other contestants who raced against Luna Nova in the last few chapters are revealed to be Dryads, who, true to the myth they're based off of, are this.
  • The Rival: Acted as one to both Akko and Diana during the race.
  • Worthy Opponent: She seems to see Diana as this, as opposed to Akko, who she considers to be a failure.
