Voiced by: Chafurin (JP) / Mark Stoddard (EN, Funimation) / Jake Eberle (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom); Guillermo Romano, José Archimides and/or Roberto Alexander (first Latin American Spanish dub), Roberto Mendiola (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 and then movie 18 onwards, plus Magic Kaito 1412), Rubén González (third Latin American Spanish dub), Francisco Alborch (second European Spanish dub, first part), Francisco Andrés Valdivia (second European Spanish dub, second part and movies), Masahiko Nishimura (2006 Live-Action Drama Actor), Masato Ibu (2011 Live-Action Drama Actor)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/infobox___juzo_megure.jpg

A police inspector, and the superior to the recurring officers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Mandatory naming note: His name came from Jules Maigret

Dub Name Change: Joseph Maguire.

  • Age-Gap Romance: An implied example. He was already working on the police force when he met his wife, who was at the time a high schooler.
  • Berserk Button: Any case that bares a resemblance to the first one he ever worked.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Often concealed by his hat, though.
  • Bodyguard Crush: He would meet his future wife when being assigned to protect her from a Serial Killer.
  • Character Development: He's a borderline Clueless Detective in the beginning of the series, only slightly better than Kogoro and was often shamelessly reliant on Kogoro while also often dismissing Conan. And even before Kogoro, he was reliant on Shinichi and Yusaku which even Kogoro had to call him out of it in a flashback during "Yusaku's Cold Case". As the series goes on, he has become more perceptive and definitely more skilled than Kogoro (though no more than Conan and few others) as well as more willing to listen to Conan and the Detective Boys. He also grows increasingly aware of being Overshadowed by Awesome by private/amateur detectives like Heiji, Subaru, Amuro, and Sera though he still reluctantly accepts their help. He's also often annoyed to Kogoro's presence, contrasting to him being reliant on Kogoro in the series' beginning. Justified from the story's standpoint: They needed to show how awesome Conan truly is compared to the adults and authorities.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His first case was dealing with a Serial Killer who targeted high school girls wearing long skirts. He would meet his future wife who, angry by the police and their inaction, would make herself a decoy to draw out the killer; as such, a young Megure was assigned as her bodyguard. Midori's plan worked, and while the killer was caught, it left both her and Megure (especially the former) with severe wounds and a lot of trauma for Megure.
  • Fat and Skinny: The round and large Fat to Midori's and Takagi's Skinny.
  • A Father to His Men: Sato sees him this way. Her own father was a policeman who died on the job and Megure reminds her of him.
  • Happily Married: While their marriage is hardly touched upon, it's clear that he and Midori are in a loving one with only a few fights.
  • Inspector Lestrade: He's portrayed as competent at his job - but Shinichi is just that much better than him, and Megure especially has the good sense to defer to him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: His initial disapproval of having a then 15-year-old Shinichi and later on, the Detective Boys, work a case is understandable. They are children and could either hinder said case or get hurt.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Megure is prone to occasional shouting fits whenever something does not go right or when his temper gets the better of him, but has proven to be someone with high morals who cares deeply for his underlings.
  • Lampshade Hanging: He's the first character who caught up on that Kogorō, and later Conan, is a Mystery Magnet. After the series settled into its rhythm, it became a near Once an Episode occurence for Megure to wryly note that Kogorō, Conan, or both had a way of always winding up exactly where the bizarre crime of the week was taking place. This has happened so many times that in the "Coffee Aroma with Murderous Intention" case, Megure cut himself off to lampshade the frequency of his own lampshading. He had another flare up in the early 2010s, when meeting Sera, Akai, and Amuro caused him to make several comments on just how many detectives there were in Beika.
  • Large and in Charge: A large fellow and inspector of the Tokyo police.
  • Made of Iron: The guy gets a metal pipe to the head to protect Sonoko from a Serial Killer chasing her and isn't knocked out. And even deals a "The Reason You Suck" Speech to the culprit.
  • Never Bareheaded: Is never ever seen without a cranium covering. Even if he changes his usual clothes or winds up in the hospital, he always keeps a hat on him. He wears a fedora now, but 10 years earlier he wore a flat cap.
  • Papa Wolf: He is very protective of the kids who hang out with Mouri and of his own subordinates. Better shown when he goes It's Personal mode in a case involving young women being attacked: he refuses to let Action Girl Satou act as a decoy once his Berserk Button was pressed, and later took a metal pipe to his head while protecting Sonoko from the culprit. It's explained that this comes from one of his first cases, where he failed to protect a schoolgirl posing as a decoy and she almost died. Fortunately, the girl got better... and then they got Happily Married.
  • Parental Substitute: Sato sees him as a father figure.
  • Please Keep Your Hat On: The reason he wears this hat is to hide the ugly scar he sustained in the incident from his first case. Not out of shame, but to avoid questions on why he and his wife have similar scars.
  • Police Are Useless: Zigzagged. On one hand he depends on Shinichi/Conan to solve his cases and rarely makes any noteworthy deductions himself, and as a cop, he very much goes by the rules and is not accustomed to taking a leap of faith. On the other hand he is very useful as Shinichi's trusted police contact, granting him access to investigation sites and case info as well as some indirect influence with the police. Furthermore, if neither Kogoro, Sonoko or Agasa are around, Conan would drop enough hints and evidence for Megure and the other policemen to figure out the culprit on their own. He is also quite the badass when given the chance, see Made of Iron below.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he finds it little offbeat that children like Conan and the Detective Boys quite often arrive to crime scenes or are present by pure chance, he's usually ready to listen to them and lets them help with investigation when they prove themselves capable for it.
  • Rescue Romance: Aside from the Bodyguard Crush, he saved Midori from being killed by the Serial Killer via run over by a car.
  • Scars Are Forever: Inspector Megure has a scar under his hat and his wife Midori has one on her forehead; both came from an incident many years ago, when both were run over by a Serial Killer.
  • Team Dad: Megure acts as a stern, but fair paternal figure to his subordinates.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: While he's not exactly a Gonk... have you seen his adorable-looking wife Midori?

    Wataru Takagi

Detective Sergeant Wataru Takagi

Voiced by: Wataru Takagi (JP) / Doug Burks (EN, Funimation) / Christopher Bevins (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom), Humberto Amor and Víctor Mares Jr. (first Latin American Spanish dub), Sergio Aliaga (third Latin American Spanish dub), Alfredo Martínez (second European Spanish dub and movies), Yuichi Tsuchiya (Live-Action Drama Actor)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_takagi.png

A sergeant of the police force who started off as an anime-only character before getting appearances in the manga. His timid personality makes him the Butt-Monkey of sorts to the rest of the police force.

His developing relationship with Sato plays as a major sidestory of the series.

Mandatory Naming Note: See his voice actor.

Dub Name Change: Inspector Henry Wilder.

  • Action Survivor: Unlike Sato, he frequently suffers injuries or humiliation whenever he became the focus of the plot.
  • Almost Kiss: Two (or three) with Sato. After all that teasing, they finally did.. And actually had TWO kisses!
  • Alone with the Psycho: Episode 535, when he catches a huge Distress Ball. Sato calls him to his cellphone and the killer tries forcing Takagi to tell her to come... and he breaks his phone instead to cut off direct contact. The police come to his aid, but Takagi still gets shot and had already been beaten bloody with a baseball bat.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He initially looks very tanned, but as Art Evolution sets in he looks quite paler.
  • Ascended Extra: He was originally an unnamed sidekick under Megure in the anime; later ascended to major character status.
  • Badass in Distress: The guy has been in life-threatening danger HOW many times...?
  • Betty and Veronica: The friendly, insecure, poor "Betty" to Shiratori's jerk-ish, arrogant, rich "Veronica" for Sato's "Archie". Sato chooses Takagi.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Push come to shove, Takagi is not one to be messed with.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gender-flipped. He's the Gentle Boy (a major Nice Guy who promises to never leave her alone) to Sato's Brooding Girl (struggling over the lost of her First Love and believing she's a "curse").
  • Butt-Monkey: He is initially self-conscious and bumbling, but gradually grows out of this as per Character Development.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: His love for Sato. She can't spit out her feelings for him much better either.
  • Canon Immigrant: On top of his Ascended Extra status, he appeared (and was named) in the anime first. In the manga, he first shows up during the Historical actor's apartment murder case (Volume 17 and 18).
  • Character Development: Takagi shows promise as a good officer and grows in self-confidence as the series progresses. He is one of the few officers who trusts Conan's judgments the most, listening to him at case scenes to find important evidence and sometimes even letting Conan take the lead in their investigation (the case with Sato handcuffed to the wrong suspect in the bathroom being a good example).
  • Chick Magnet: Surprisingly, Takagi gets a lot of attention from the opposite sex.
    • In the end of the Love Triangle, Sato chooses him.
    • According to Yumi, some girls in the police apartment are attracted to him because they find him moe-level adorable.
    • Even Chianti, of all people, said he was cute.
    • Naeko comments that Takagi is popular with the ladies from the traffic department.
  • Covert Pervert: Sometime after he and Sato became a couple they began to have sex, and there have been a couple of times where Takagi is rather excited of either talking about it or wanting to do it.
  • Did They or Didn't They?: Heavily implied to be the former in Files 806 and 867. Pretty much all but stated in File 869 when he thinks Sato is pregnant and he's the dad of the baby.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: In the early chapters/episodes, Takagi had very tanned skin, but it has become progressively more pale.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In earlier episodes, Takagi's hairstyle was more spikier. His current one is in a combed over style.
  • Extreme Doormat: Takes borderline abuse and straight up harassment from his co-workers, and specially Shiratori, whenever they think he is making progress with Sato and can barely say a few words when they are at it. Somewhat justified in Shiratori's case, since he holds a quite higher police rank than Takagi does.
  • Fanboy: Of famed wrestlers Bruiser Brody and Keiji Mutoh.
  • Friend on the Force: Despite Conan being a child, Takagi puts a lot of trust in him and his abilities, and will often go out on a limb to help him out. This trust is clearly returned, as more and more Takagi is becoming Conan's go-to guy when dealing with matters involving the police force.
  • Friend to All Children: Although they sometimes make fun of him, Ayumi thinks he's cute and he's one of the few adults who actually listen to Conan and the other kids.
  • Hidden Depths: One of his hobbies includes following the international wrestling scene, being a fan of wrestlers such as Bruiser Brody and Keiji Mutoh, and recognizing a move that Ran does as the "Shining Wizard," a finishing move of Mutoh's. In summary, his hobbies involve a lot of martial arts and sports.
  • Hot-Blooded: Takagi's the standard Hot Blooded Cop, typically restrained only by his continued presence near Megure.
  • Insecure Love Interest: One of the hindrances behind his and Sato's developing romantic relationship was due to his own insecurity that she would choose him.
  • Love Triangle: With Sato and Shiratori. Sato chooses Takagi. Plus, Shiratori ultimately finds his actual true love.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Him and Sato. He isn't super girlish but he's mentioned to be a "vegetarian" (non-aggressive) kind of man (unless he's in the line of duty) and is a dorky Nice Guy, whereas Sato is a tomboyish and straightforward Action Girl. Rather hilariously lampshaded when Sato, dressed in a Western style bridal gown, manages to judo-flip Takagi, dressed in a tuxedo, when she mistook him for the fleeing suspect. (This picture then ends up as a building sized advertisement spread for the location where the "wedding" was being held.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: As Chihaya observes in the Marriage Partner Searching Party Murder Case, Takagi's first impulse in a crisis is to redirect all of the threat towards himself. Over the course of the series, he's grabbed knives by the blade to save a suicidal culprit, smashed his own phone to stop his comrades from saving him from a man with a gun, gone to disarm a bomb by himself, and falsely confessed to a murder just to make the "victim"'s henchman focus entirely on him.
  • Master of Disguise: Once in a while he has acted as a decoy. Cruelly subverted once, when his chosen disguise accidentally triggered Sato as he unadvertedly made himself look a LOT like her Lost Lenore Matsuda.
  • Nice Guy: When off-duty, no one can't find a sweeter person.
  • Official Couple: With Sato.
  • Pocket Protector: What saves his life when he's shot in the "Alone with the Psycho" incident is a thick mahjong tile that he had in his breast pocket (and which also was the evidence). Shiratori lampshades it by saying "this is so like in novels and movies."
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: To Conan and the Detective Boys, along with Sato. He always listens to them and takes them seriously, and doesn't hesitate to rush to their aid whenever they ask for it.
  • Rescue Romance: With Sato. She's his Action Girlfriend and did lose her First Love to a Mad Bomber, so any time the guy's in risk she's gone Violently Protective Girlfriend on the culprits.
  • Rich Suitor, Poor Suitor: The "poor" suitor, as he's middle class. He still wins.
  • Saying Too Much: One of the first ways it's implied he and Sato are sexually active is that he knows that Sato's bed is very soft which embarrasses the latter. While the other Detective Boys don't get it, Conan and Ai have faces that scream "Did you really have to say that?"
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Savvy Guy (more down-to-Earth and kinda dorky) to Sato's Energetic Girl (an Action Girl and sometimes has quite the Genki Girl mannerisms).
  • Second Love:To Sato, as her First Love Matsuda died tragically.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The passive Sensitive Guy to Date's aggressive Manly Man.
  • Shipper on Deck: One can say that he's just glad Shiratori isn't interfering in his romantic involvement with Sato, but Takagi is genuninely fond of the idea of him and Kobayashi-sensei together.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The black notepad and ring he carries once belong to his mentor, Wataru Date. The latter was something that Date wanted to offer to his girlfriend.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Takagi slapped Sato when she was about to kill an unarmed subject. Downplayed that Takagi did that to stop Sato from killing the culprit.

    Miwako Sato

Assistant Inspector Miwako Sato

Voiced by: Atsuko Yuya (JP), Kate Oxley (EN, Funimation), Katelyn Gault (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom), Javiera del Pino y Ariella Yuri (third Latin American Spanish dub), Mercedes Espinosa (second European Spanish dub and movies), Natsuhi Ueno (Live-Action Drama Actress)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miwako_sato_detective_conan.jpg

An assistant inspector and the leading outgoing female of the police force.

Her developing relationship with Takagi plays as a major sidestory of the series.

Dub Name Change: Detective Simone Miwako (her last name is never aired in English versions)

  • Action Girl: A very prominent one alongside Ran and Kazuha.
  • Action Girlfriend: She's this towards Takagi, despite both of them being older than the standard.
  • Almost Kiss: Two (or three) with Takagi. After all that teasing, they finally did.. And actually had TWO kisses!
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The "Archie" for Takagi's friendly, insecure, poor "Betty" to Shiratori's jerk-ish, arrogant, rich "Veronica". Sato chooses Takagi.
    • The aggressive, Action Girl cop "Veronica" to Kobayashi's gentle, Shrinking Violet teacher "Betty" for Shiratori's "Archie". Subverted in that Shiratori thought that Sato was his true love he met in childhood...which was actually Kobayashi; besides that, Sato is an Official Couple with Takagi and Kobayashi thought Shiratori was only interested in her because of her resemblance to Sato. Thankfully, it was all sorted out.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While Satou is the most amiable of the officers, she's the most dangerous of them as well.
  • Big Eater: Her favorite hobbies include attending all-you-can-eat offers and going out to eat ramen.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Has considerably short hair, her job is a police officer, and she tends to be quite tough and aggressive.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: She attempts this once towards Takagi, because as a result of Matsuda's death, she believes that she has a Cartwright Curse.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gender-flipped. She's the Brooding Girl (struggling over the lost of her First Love and believing she's a "curse") to Takagi's Gentle Boy (a major Nice Guy who promises to never leave her alone).
  • Character Development: Over her romantic arc with Takagi, Sato gradually accepts the death of Matsuda (her first love) and becomes more open to Takagi in their relationship.
  • Clueless Dude Magnet: Sato doesn't know that the whole police department all have a romantic attraction to her...or is at least trying to ignore that...
  • Cool Big Sis: Acts as a surrogate one to the Detective Boys.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Eighteen years ago, when she was still at elementary school, Miwako lost her father, Masayoshi Sato, in a traffic accident as he was about to deliver a bank robber to the police - an event that marked her life. Years later when she joined the police force, Sato gained feeling for fellow officer Matsuda...who later died in a bombing. Because of these two brutal deaths, she gained a perception that she was "bad luck".
  • Determinator: Sato goes exceedingly far in pursue of a criminals. Even things like buildings and traffic will not stop her.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Earning the title Silver Witch of Fuyuna Mountain.
  • Dude Magnet:
    • Every other single man in her department (save for Chiba, but that's something else) are fighting to be her boyfriend. Best seen in "Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 2" when Megure radios any available officer to help find Sato, who he fears may be held captive by a potential Cop Killer. Everyone ranging from the anti-riot officers to the lowly beat cop in a koban rushes in to help Megure when they hear that she was captured.
    • She was in a Love Triangle with Takagi and Shiratori. In Shiratori's case it was because of mistaken identity, and his actual true love was Sumiko Kobayashi. And even before that revelation, Satou ultimately choose Takagi.
    • Korn even compliments her good looks.
  • Fair Cop: A gorgeous and very active woman who loves her cop job.
  • Fangirl: Of Lupin III.
  • Foil: In contrast of Sato's physical resemblance to Kobayashi-sensei the two women have almost entirely different personality traits: While Sato is reckless, outspoken, daring, and impulsive, Kobayashi-sensei is more gentle, softspoken, cautious, and careful in any given situation.
  • Friend to All Children: Has a fondness towards kids, which might be a primary reason why she listens to Conan.
  • Identical Stranger: She looks exactly like Inspector Shiratori's childhood crush, who turns out to be Kobayashi-sensei.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Because of all of the death she had in her life, she thought she was some sort of "omen" and that she and Takagi shouldn't become a couple because of it.
  • Love Triangle: With Takagi and Shiratori. She chooses Takagi. Plus, Shiratori ultimately finds his actual true love.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: She and Takagi. He isn't super girlish but he's mentioned to be a "vegetarian" (non-aggressive) kind of man (unless he's in the line of duty) and is a Nice Guy, whereas Sato is a tomboyish and straightforward Action Girl.
  • Master of Disguise: She disguises herself several times, mostly to act as a decoy for other women who are in danger or to lure out prospect killers.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her first name "Miwako" is written with the characters for "beautiful" and "child" referring to her Dude Magnet attraction and Friend to All Children personality, respectively.
    • "Sato" is Japanese for "sugar" reflecting her being a Big Eater and a Nice Girl simultaneously.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: In chapter 867, Takagi, Yumi and Naeko mistook her action for "her period hasn't come" which subtly confirms that yes, she and Takagi are sexually active. Of course it's just that she temporarily loses the ring that Takagi gave her.
  • Nice Girl: One of the easiest people to get along with.
  • Oblivious to Love: While quite a few people in this series has this, she has all of them beat; she has never once twigged to the fact that Takagi, Shiratori, and every other single man in her department find (or used to find) her attractive, often leading to humorous misunderstandings. (Especially when a mischievous Yumi shamelessly takes advantage of that cluelessness to prank the rest of the department.)
  • Official Couple: With Takagi.
  • Old Maid: Her mom thinks that, at age 28, she is one. She's not. Mrs. Sato still arranged her a date with Shiratori to try fixing it, but Conan and Dr. Araide helped Takagi "fix" that.

  • Plucky Girl: This lady isn't exactly prone to give up on her purposes.
  • Rememberthe New Guy: Comes off like this in the English dubbed movies. Like Ai, her debut episode wasn't dubbed officially by Funimation.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Along with Takagi, she overlooks Conan's age and gives him the benefit of the doubt that he's serious, and also shares information with him and allows him to conduct investigations.
  • Rescue Romance: With Takagi. She's his Action Girlfriend and did lose her First Love to a Mad Bomber, so any time the guy's in risk she's gone Violently Protective Girlfriend on the culprits.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Sato keeps her cool when she's questioning someone she suspects as her father's killer in the past, but she almost loses her marbles when confronting the bomber who got Matsuda killed in an explosion, even going as far as trying to kill him with a revolver. It is as if Sato wants the bomber to resist arrest so she can obtain personal justification in ending the bomber's life. Fortunately, Takagi manages to stop Sato from walking down that self-destructive path.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Energetic Girl (an Action Girl and sometimes has quite the Genki Girl mannerisms) to Takagi's Savvy Guy (more down-to-Earth and kinda dorky).
  • Second Love: Sato's first love is Jinpei Matsuda, who died in a bombing case. Her next relationship with Takagi is much more successful to the point that its progression helped Sato overcoming Matsuda's death.
  • Shipper on Deck: Sato really ships Shiratori and Kobayashi.
Sato [in a VERY giddy, almost Genki Girl-like tone and attitude]: "Sooooo, where's the teacher that Shiratori-kun is so in love with?! Huh?!"
  • Single-Target Sexuality: The only man she has ever shown an open romantic attraction towards is Takagi. Not a straight example as she was hung up on Matsuda before the case involving his death was resolved but even then she was nowhere near as open about it with him as she is with Takagi and a large part of her issues with Matsuda were tied to his being The Lost Lenore to her.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man:
  • Taking the Bullet: For Ran, in the fourth movie. Which causes poor Ran a bad case of Trauma-Induced Amnesia. She almost dies, but ultimately gets better.
  • Tomboy: Specially when compared to Yumi or Kobayashi.
  • Trauma Button: As the opening to Movie 25, The Bride of Halloween reveals, she's still very much haunted by the deaths of her father and Jinpei Matsuda as well as Takagi Wataru's many close calls that seeing the latter "killed" in a practice run of a wedding the 1st division is acting security for is enough to render her catatonic for a short while.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Heaven help you if you so much as lay a finger on Takagi.

    Ninzaburou Shiratori

Inspector Ninzaburou Shiratori

Voiced by: Kaneto Shiozawa / Kazuhiko Inoue (JP) / Eric Vale (EN, Funimation), Greg Chun (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom), Jesús Barrero (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 only), Arturo Cataño (second Latin American Spanish dub, movie 18 onwards), Orlando Alfaro (third Latin American Spanish dub), Miguel Ángel del Hoyo (second European Spanish dub and movies)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ninzaburo_shiratori_profile_2.jpg

An assistant inspector (later promoted to police inspector) of the police force. Similar to Takagi, Shiratori started off as a movie-only character before being implemented into the manga.

He plays as the love-rival for Takagi towards Sato before finding out that he was chasing after the wrong woman the entire time; that woman really being Kobayashi.

Dub Name Change: Inspector Nicholas Santos.

  • Anime Hair: ... What's up with his bangs?
  • Badass Bookworm: A former prospect lawyer, he knows everything about the law and once uses it as an effective way to call out the culprit of a crime.
"Criminal Law, Article #36. An act unavoidably performed to protect the rights of oneself or any other person against imminent and unlawful infringement is not punishable. An act exceeding the limits of self-defense may lead to the punishment being reduced or may exculpate the offender in light of circumstances. These are the provisions of self-defense. At the time of the crime, you used a bladed weapon with the intent to kill. So none of these circumstances apply. Not to mention, turning a bat which fulfills dreams into a weapon to silence people earns you no right to talk about dreams at all."
  • Because Destiny Says So: He seems to be a strong believer of this. He referred to the girl he loved as his "girl of destiny".
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The jerk-ish, arrogant, rich "Veronica" to Takagi's friendly, insecure, poor "Betty" for Sato's "Archie". Sato chooses Takagi.
    • The "Archie" for Sato's aggressive, Action Girl cop "Veronica" to Kobayashi's gentle, Shrinking Violet teacher "Betty".
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Shiratori has pretty big ones.
  • Canon Immigrant: He first appeared in the Non Serial Movies, then became a regular in the manga.
  • Character Development:
    • Shiratori more than once tried to use his riches to get an edge over Takagi over Sato in the past, but now that he's with Kobayashi he does it solely to make her happy.
    • He's noticeably more friendly towards Conan, Ai and the Detective Boys as time passes.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Kobayashi-sensei. He thought that Sato was a girl he once saved years ago (and who he had liked ever since then), which sparked the Love Triangle. She actually was...not, and he lost to Takagi anyway. Some time later, the girl he liked as a child did appear and she turned out to be the aforementioned Kobayashi. They're together now.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy:
    • His main reason for wanting to stop Takagi's romance with Sato is jealousy. He stops after learning that Sato isn't his "girl of destiny".
    • Has this again, except for Kobayashi, and got quite irritated at Chiba's friendly chatter with her.
  • Cultured Badass: His favorite hobbies include studying architecture, cooking, and collecting wine, including his favorite Romane Conti. Shiratori is able to solve cases that seem to have a large culture (he has been able to answer Megura on his question about the temperature in the episode 682), but he do well especially when faced with topics pertinent to his upper class tastes.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: Wine, his favorite being Romane Conti. Shows his status of having an upper-class background.
  • Entitled to Have You: Thinks that he and Sato should be together because she apparently is his "girl of destiny". He drops this attitude after finding his true "girl of destiny", Kobayashi.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: If one pays attention to his looks in the flashbacks to Jinpei Matsuda's death, they'll notice that his bangs look softer and wavier.
  • Fair Cop: Is a Police Inspector and is very good looking.
  • Gentleman Detective: More like "Gentleman Inspector", but he has a gentleman personality that matches his Wine Is Classy background.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Was this to Sato when he was pursuing her. His efforts towards romancing her barely got her notice and would at most cause her to snark to herself about his actions.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: This guy spent a better part of the series interfering with Sato and Takagi's developing relationship when he (and the others) should have respectfully left them alone. However, he never went as far as to actually try to harm Takagi to get him outta the way (the idea never seems to cross his mind), is quite able to team work with him when needed, and he's always thought of him as a good cop and a decent guy otherwise. He eventually does stop after discovering Sato wasn't "his girl of destiny", he met as a child. And since childhood, Shiratori has been a honest and hardworking individual, and has a love for the law in general; his jerk tendencies come much more from his huge pride rather than actual cruelty. And after he and Kobayashi-sensei become a couple, Shiratori proves to be a good and genuinely dedicated boyfriend to her.
  • Karma Houdini: In real life, Shiratori may have gotten fired due to his constant harassment of Sato and Takagi, especially the latter. If not fired, then he may have at least gotten demoted or transferred to a much less desirable divisionnote .
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He was far more prone to having misfortune befall him when he went a little too far in the Love Triangle with Sato and Takagi.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Manga readers who saw Shiratori's appearance in Volume 24 before watching the first Non-Serial Movie "The Timed Bomb Skyscrapper" would know immediately that he is not the Big Bad of the story.
  • Love at First Sight: He pretty much fell in love with Kobayashi when they met once as children. He fell for Satou because he thought she was the grown-up Kobayashi, and once he realises Kobayashi was the "girl of destiny" they started a proper relationship.
  • Love Confession: Makes a poignant and rather heartfelt one to his "girl of destiny", Kobayashi-sensei.
"Since long before these children were born... I have been... In love with you."
  • Love Triangle: Has feelings for Sato. So does Takagi. She chooses Takagi, but Shiratori ends up finding his true love in Kobayashi-sensei.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Justified. Given Shiratori is a Canon Immigrant, there is some discrepancies in his backstory — In the non-canon movie, he is new to the force. After Shiratori was incorporated into the manga, it was later said he had been on the force longer than Takagi.
  • Non-Idle Rich: While he comes from a very rich family, he is certainly one of the more competent and hardworking police officers there and there's no evidence about him using his family influence to climb the bureaucratic ladder.
  • Official Couple: With Kobayashi-sensei.
  • Pride: Shiratori, like Sato and Takagi, believes that Conan has a lot of intelligence for a boy his age. Unlike Takagi and Sato, he usually tends to care not much for Conan's opinion. He often feels that Conan gets in the way, and that he himself could have figured out the case without Conan's help, though Conan always proves otherwise. Though he started easing up when Conan helped him out in the "Sakura"-related cases.
  • Princely Young Man: Has traits of both the Ice King and the Gentleman types. While not a bad person, he can be kind of an Upper-Class Twit when at his very worse though he softens up with time, and especially once he finds his childhood love.
  • Real Men Cook: One of his favorite hobbies include cooking.
  • Red Herring: In the first movie, his rather sharp knowledge about architecture leads Conan and Kogoro to think he's the Mad Bomber that's blowing shit up. Naturally, he's not.
  • Rescue Romance: With Kobayashi. As children, he supported her when she stood up to shoplifters. As adults, he is one of the persons who protects her when she's targeted by a murderer because she knows too much (complete with a Declaration of Protection), and him giving a "The Reason You Suck" Speech to the culprit that sounded almost exactly like the one he gave to the shoplifters is what makes her remember that he was the boy from their past.
  • Romantic False Lead: For Satou, in the end.
  • Sacrificial Lion:
    • He was the first officer to be seriously injured that kicked off the Serial Bomber case.
    • He took a blow to the head by the third criminal in the Teitan Elementary Warehouse case.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Subverted with Kobayashi. They used to fit in the trope [[spoiler: during their first and almost last encounter when they were children , but when they found each other again 20 years later, Sumiko had grown into a much gentler Shrinking Violet and Shiratori was more arrogant than savvy. They still got together.
  • Shipper on Deck: After realizing that Kobayashi-sensei was his "girl of destiny", he began to fully support Takagi and Sato's relationship.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: For the girl he once saved. Who turned out be Sumiko Kobayashi.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Tall, black haired, and noted to very good looking.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Flashbacks of him as a child show him being very polite, if a little cold. As an adult, he became more arrogant.
  • Took a Level in Kindness:
    • After finding out his true love was Kobayashi-sensei, Shiratori dropped all animosity towards Takagi and advised the other men to do so as well.
    • In the "Sakura"-themed cases he also showed a kinder attitude towards the Detective Kids; he got stuck with them by mistake in the theater, but ultimately didn't mind and even explained to them why he believes Sato to be his "girl of destiny".
  • Upper-Class Twit: Downplayed. Shiratori is by no means an incompetent detective or man in general; this is just the worse he can be in cases when his arrogance gets the best of him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: The flashback to Shiratori's childhood shows him as a well-mannered, cool-headed boy who liked to do the right thing no matter what and valued people doing likewise. His adult self, however, is quite more arrogant and even kinda forceful in regards to Satou. Though after he finds the other person in said flashback, Kobayashi-sensei, he starts showing his kinder side again more frequently.
  • Wine Is Classy: Shiratori, coming from a wealthy family background, is a wine enthusiast himself. The second OAV, "Sixteen Suspects?!", is set at his villa, which has an extensive wine cellar. A bottle of extremely rare wine is broken by one of the guests, and Conan and Hattori have to figure out who did it. In the second movie, one of the suspects is a professional sommelier, and Shiratori gets to briefly enjoy exploring their wine cellar before another murder attempt is made.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: A flashback of him as a child when he first met Child!Kobayashi, who'd later think of as Child!Sato, has the two standing up to two grown men who were attempting to steal manga from a store. He manages to keep his cool despite being a tiny little kid and scares them into giving the manga back by basically reciting laws regarding theft at them as an improvised "The Reason You Suck" Speech.

    Yumi Miyamoto

Assistant Inspector Yumi Miyamoto

Voiced by: Yuu Sugimoto (JP), Amanda Lee (EN), Carolina Highet (third Latin-American Spanish dub), Marta Sáinz (second European Spanish dub)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yumi_miyamoto_profile.png

A traffic cop who is on good terms with Takagi and especially Satou.

  • The Big Damn Kiss: She gives one to her ex-boyfriend, Shukichi Haneda.
  • Cool Big Sis: To the Detective Boys and Naeko Miike.
  • Fair Cop: She's a traffic cop and looks very, very cute.
  • Genki Girl: She's a grown up version, and sometimes is very loud and energetic.
  • Hidden Depths:
  • Official Couple: Seems to go this way with Shukichi Haneda, her ex boyfriend. More pronounced following Chapter 947.
  • The Prankster: Although it's not treated as a defining characteristic for her, the mischievous Yumi has been known to take advantage of Satou's Oblivious to Love nature, doing things that cause Satou to provoke panic in all the single men in their department who are attracted to her while being completely unaware she is doing so.
  • Selective Obliviousness: She does have a Love Interest (hinted as early as episode 427/volume 49) despite her vehement denials. Said love interest happens to be a professional Shōgi player who had privately decided himself as unworthy of her until he can win all seven shogi titles. Naturally, Yumi is clueless of his ambitions and the fact that he is a celebrity, though to be fair she doesn't seem to follow the news about shogi and similar sports.
    • To put to perspective, it takes nearly 100 chapters after said boyfriend's introductory arc before Yumi discovers he's a famous shogi player. Even after previously helping escort him back to his title match in time in an earlier arc and being helped by a police officer who happens to be a fan of him and got his autograph.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Satou and Takagi. Amusing she seems to be an anti-shipper for Chiba and Naeko... because then it would make her the sole main character of Tokyo Police that is SINGLE. Of course, once her ex-boyfriend come back into her life...
  • Shout-Out: Her dogs are named Starski and Hachi.
  • The Tease: She gets a fair deal of attention from the opposite sex, and enjoys it quite a bit.
  • Uptown Girl: The extremely wealthy and famous "Taiko Meijin" Haneda is dating her and is completely loyal and openly affectionate to Yumi.

    Kazunobu Chiba

Detective Sergeant Kazunobu Chiba

Voiced by: Isshin Chiba (JP) / Jason C. Miller (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom), Bastián Cortés (third Latin-American Spanish dub), José María Carrero (second European Spanish dub, first apparitions), Pepe Carabias (second European Spanish dub, rest of the series and movies)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/infobox___kazunobu_chiba.jpg

A plump police sergeant who shows up often with Takagi and Megure.

Mandatory Naming Note: Named after his voice actor. The kanji for Isshin (一伸) can also be pronounced as "Kazunobu", so Aoyama gave the character a given name with different kanji that are still pronounced as "Kazunobu" (和伸).

  • Big Eater: Shown a few times to be eating heavily, but being a fat character is self-explanatory.
  • Big Fun: Gets along well with the Detective Boys; helps that he's a fan of reading manga and watching children's shows.
  • Chick Magnet: When he temporarily loss weight, he became popular among the policewomen.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Naeko. Both are actively trying to rekindle the sparks they had when they were younger. It would be successful if Chiba could recognize her....
  • Childhood Friends: He was childhood friends with both Naeko and Sakurako Yonehara.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: In the earlier chapters/episodes, Chiba had a neater hairstyle and was more muscle than fat. Now, he has messier hair and bigger waist.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: With Naeko. Though it's less about forgetting their Childhood Friend Romance, and more about not recognizing her as an adult.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Chiba kept the same Messy Hair he had as a child.
  • Nice Guy: Gets along with everyone he interacts with.
  • Oblivious to Love: His romance with Naeko (see below) would have been perfect if not for one problem: he still cannot seem to recognise her as the girl from his Childhood Friend Romance!
  • Otaku: Chiba reads a manga about a pretty girl detective and it's strongly suggested by Takagi that his room is FULL of character figurines and models... to the point that it's a little creepy.
    • There is a case at Chiba's house in File 450. Almost every exposed surface in the living room has figurines or other merchandise, but Conan finds it excessive rather than creepy. Chiba collection seems to be mostly superhero and kaiju related. Naturally, the detective boys love it.
  • Rescue Romance: He finally recognizes Miike after he saved her from the culprit in the Policewoman Murder Case.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Sato/Takagi fanboy.
    • He seems to be a Shiratori/Kobayashi fanboy as well when he teases Shiratori over his real reason for stopping by Kobayashi's school...to see her face.
  • Weight Woe: Zigzagged. He starts to diet in chapter 942 - 944 on Naeko's insistence (though he doesn't realize it was by her manipulation), and the results are gorgeous. However, Naeko started to realize their department's policewomen started to find him attractive, and resolved to feed Chiba box full of chocolates to get him chubby again.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Strongly believes that one should always do the right thing, regardless of whether anyone watches or there will be any consequences. Otherwise, doing the wrong thing will become a habit that's hard to get rid of.

    Naeko Miike

Sergeant Naeko Miike

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naeko_miike.jpg

A cute rookie traffic cop who gets paired up with Yumi later in the series, and is Chiba's childhood love.

  • Book Dumb: Kind of inversion. She knows a lot about her job as a traffic cop, but she's often nervous in the field job.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Officer Chiba. Both are actively trying to rekindle the sparks they had when they were younger. It would be successful if Chiba could recognize her....
  • Childhood Friends: She was childhood friends with both Officer Chiba and Sakurako Yonehara.
  • Crush Blush: Manifests whenever she catches sight of Chiba.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's kidnapped by the culprit in the Policewoman Murder Case. Chiba and Conan manage to find and save her later thanks to the clue she gave to them with her second phone.
  • Fair Cop: Notice a pattern here?
  • Genki Girl: Shown at times to be very energetic.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her current hairstyle.
  • Rescue Romance: Chiba finally recognizes her after he saved her from the culprit in the Policewoman Murder Case.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The main reason Naeko is in love with Chiba is because of his strong sense of justice and doing the right thing even when no one's looking.

    Kiyonaga Matsumoto

Senior Superintendent Kiyonaga Matsumoto

Voiced by: Seizō Katō (JP), Bob Carter (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiyonaga_matsumoto_profile.jpg

A superintendent of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department who is Inspector Megure's direct superior.

Mandatory Naming Note: The given name is a Alternate Character Reading for Seichou Matsumoto, Japanese mystery writer.

Dub Name Change: Superintendent Kristopher McLaughlin.

  • Cool Old Guy: He's in his 50's already, and apparently is the oldest man in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
  • Da Chief: Is the highest-ranking among the members of the TMP that we see, note  and is very much a Reasonable Authority Figure.
  • Face of a Thug: So much that, in his debut appearance, Ran almost attacked him to protect Sayuri, mistakenly thinking he wanted to hurt her!
  • A Father to His Men: To the point that his subordinates respect him so much that they also attend his daughter's wedding.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a HUGE one on his left eye. He got it while confronting a Serial Killer... who was armed with a katana.
  • Large and in Charge: Easily the largest of all the Tokyo policemen we've seen in the series.
  • My Greatest Failure: He has two of these:
    • During a case, several years ago, his police car accidentally hit a young mother. Matsumoto was in such a rush that he didn't stop to help hernote  and she died few minutes later, so when he found out about the woman's death, he never forgave himself. Little did he know that the dead woman's son would plan revenge as an adult...
    • Later, the reader finds out that he still feels guilty over the death of his best friend and partner, Morimura, who bled to death in his arms after being hit by the car of the Serial Killer who, later, would give him his scar.
  • Papa Wolf: Was about to rough up Toshihiko when the latter admits to poisoning his daughter's lemon tea.
  • Put on a Bus: In chapter 920, it is mentioned that Matsumoto was promoted to Senior Superintendent and that someone else is transferred to the Metropolitan Police Department to fill his old Superintendent position. This "someone else" is Hyoue Kuroda from Nagano Police, ''one of the biggest suspects of being Rum from the Black Organization.note
  • Rank Up: Matsumoto is promoted from Superintendent to Senior Superintendent in chapter 920, with his replacement Kuroda now referring to him as keishi-sei rather than keishi.

    Hyoue Kuroda

Superintendent Hyoue Kuroda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/78b0ec53d62bf70a4cb3c3eefc9ccb44.png

Originally the First Division Chief from the Nagano Police, as well as Yamato and Yui's direct superior. By his second appearance, he has been reassigned to Tokyo to replace Superintendent Matsumoto as Tokyo's First Division chief.

  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has spiky, big, and grey eyebrows.
  • The Confidant: Implied. Chapter 1017 has Kuroda refer to Amuro by his codename Bourbon, hinting that he is Rum. Later revealed to be a Red Herring (since Wakita is Rum), and Kuroda is instead hinted to be Amuro's PSB superior, part of a small group of officers who know the latter's NOC status.
  • Da Chief: One of the highest-ranking police officers in Nagano, and as said above he's the boss of both Yui and Yamato. Chapter 920 reveals that Kuroda has been reassigned to Tokyo as the replacement for the other Da Chief of the series, Superintendent Matsumoto, further fueling the speculations about him being Rum.
  • Eye Scream: He lost his right eye, but it's not been explained how. Certain media play it differently; the manga shows that Kuroda has a prosthetic eye (when its open), the anime shows us a mutilated set of eyelids instead. Chapter 1108 reveals the scars came from a car crash he was involved in trying to escape with an unconscious Asaka with the organization on his heels.
  • Face of a Thug: He's a rather levelheaded fellow, but his heavily scarred face scares the crap out of people. Ai and Conan talk about this and she claims to not have recognized Kuroda as a B.O. member, and when Conan asks her why she was so scared of him anyway, she tells him she was terrified of his scars instead.
  • Large and in Charge: A tall and solidly-built man, with a rather high rank within the Nagano prefectural police and later, within Tokyo MPD.
  • Two-Faced: The right side of his face is covered in scars, almost surely coming from whatever incident robbed him of his eye. It came from a car crash while trying to escape from the Black Organization with Asaka and left him comatose for a decade.

Public Security Bureau

    Rei Furuya/Tōru Amuro

Tōru Amuro / Bourbon / Zero / Rei Furuya

Age: 29

Debut: File 793: Private Eye (Manga), Episodes 667-668: Wedding Eve (Anime)

Voiced by: Tōru Furuya, Mariya Ise (Young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_m9luwqcvjl1qbzw5lo1_1280.jpg
"My…love is…heh heh… this country itself!"

English Voice Actor: Kyle McCarley (TMS/Bang Zoom)

"Forget three…I could act out a hundred different faces…"

Tōru Amuro is introduced as a Private Detective who first appeared posing as a waiter while helping a client with a case. He currently works at Café Poirot, and eventually becomes Kogorō’s apprentice. Amuro is, in fact, Bourbon of the Black Organization, a skilled reconnaissance and intelligence agent who was The Rival to Rye/Shūichi Akai in the past. Bourbon is shown to be one of the few operatives Vermouth is willing to work with. He is THEN revealed to actually be Rei Furuya, a National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning, Chiyoda Division 1 investigator having infiltrated the Black Organization and was referred to as “Zero” during his childhood.

Due to his immense popularity, Amuro is the Deuteragonist in the theatrical films ''The Darkest Nightmare'', the eponymous ''Zero the Enforcer'' and ''The Bride of Halloween''.Amuro is also The Protagonist of his own (also eponymous) Spin-Off manga, ''Zero's Tea Time'', written and drawn by The Saga of Darren Shan and AR∀GO: City of London Police's Special Crimes Investigator artist Takahiro Arai and supervised by series creator Gōshō Aoyama. He is also a major character in ''Wild Police Story''.

Mandatory naming note: The first part of his main alias “Tōru” is the first name of his Japanese voice actor, Tōru Furuya. The latter half of his alias is “Amuro” the first name of The Hero of the original Mobile Suit Gundam who is voiced by the aforementioned Tōru Furuya. In his real name, Rei Furuya, “Rei” is both another spelling of the original Amuro’s last name “Ray” and is the Japanese number for “zero”(零) , his childhood nickname. Furuya is the last name of his voice actor.

  • The Ace: Amuro has proven a multitude of times that he is very skilled at numerous things. These include but are not limited to driving, boxing and jujitsu, genius tactician and planner and an excellent chef.
  • Actor Allusion: Tōru Furuya once again brings to life another attractive, determined and intelligent young man with pragmatic tendencies. They also both excellently drive (primarily) white vehicles.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Technically, Rei's first appearance in the anime was in the new opening theme song during the Kaitou Kid special in August 2012.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Cases Amuro is featured in-before The Reveal of his identity as Bourbon and after his real identity is shown-give him noticeable focus.
    • Some anime filler episodes released right before the yearly Non-Serial Movie are dedicated to cast members that will have plot relevance to the films. i.e., since the 20th movie focuses on the Black Organization, The Shadow Approaching Amuro, an anime episode released few before its theater debut is dedicated to Tōru Amuro/Rei Furuya/"Bourbon", a member of the Public Security Bureau who's acting as The Mole in the Organization. The episode The Melting Cake! does the same for thetwenty-second film.
    • The aforementioned twentieth and the twenty-second films as well as the twenty-fifth feature Amuro as the Deuteragonist.
    • Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time gives Amuro his own Heroes Gone Fishing Spin-Off.
  • Affably Evil: During his tenure as a villain, Bourbon was very polite and upfront with whoever he was speaking to.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Amuro has been called “Zero” by Hiromitsu Morofushi, Wataru Date, Jinpei Matsuda, Kenji Hagiwara and Conan, Furuya-chan by Hagiwara and Zero-no-niichan (Big brother Zero) by Conan.
  • Agent Peacock: Amuro isn't overtly feminine but he is noticeably dainty at times and always well-dressed. Kogorō calls him "effeminate". This in no way detracts from his genius or fighting skills.
  • Agent Provocateur: As “Scar!Akai”, Bourbon wanted to see if Shūichi Akai was still alive and dressed up as him to gauge the reactions of his loved ones.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: File 1011 reveals that despite having been born in Japan and having lived there his whole life, he was picked on as a child for having foreign ancestry. This continued even when he enrolled in the police academy, with one person quipping he was probably good at English. His new friend Wataru Date stood up for him, as he was in a relationship with another foreigner.
  • Almighty Janitor: In his Tōru Amuro disguise, Amuro is a humble Amateur Sleuth who is lucky enough to be mentored by Kogorō Mōri and gets by as a café worker. In reality he is the Knowledge Broker of The Syndicate but is actually The Mole planted by the Secret Police.
  • Always Second Best: While well-trained and extremely skilled Amuro still falls behind Conan and Akai, especially in intelligence. Even Aoyama-sensei in an interview joked that Amuro “cannot beat” Akai.
Q: "So he can't defeat Akai?"
Aoyama-sensei: "I think Amuro is better at many things than Akai is. But he can't beat Akai. He might have a chance if it was a cooking contest, though... But if he has to match Akai, he might get nervous and fail."
  • Amateur Sleuth: As Tōru Amuro, he pretends to an up and coming detective who works at a café to pay his bills.
  • Always Someone Better: Furuya has this dynamic with his subordinate Yūya Kazami. They are not rivals but in whatever task they try together, Furuya will usually be better.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Despite being Japanese, Amuro has noticeably dark skin, lighter than, but closer to Heiji's color. File 1011 reveals that one of his parents isn't Japanese.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: In keeping with his Mysterious Past, neither of Amuro’s parents have currently been seen or mentioned, even in Flashbacks to his childhood.
  • Antagonist Title: He is Film 22’s eponymous “Zero the Enforcer”. In the film due to numerous circumstances, he and Conan are in uneasy opposition until the end of the second half.
Q: "How about the developments in the Conan VS Amuro clash?"
Sakurai Takeharu: "It was decided to depict Furuya from the PSP so I did think that he and Conan would clash. Actually, the "justice" that Conan has on him is also carried by Amuro, and the one that Amuro has is also being carried by Conan. They only differ in how they express it. I don't think neither is above the other one. If you think of it as each one taking action upon the info given to each of them, they take action in a very natural manner. I wrote it thinking that it would be good for Amuro to seem "bad". But he doesn't actually give much of such an impression. If you listen to his conversation with Kazami, you don't think of him as someone evil. He also takes action based on his beliefs. The only issue is the means employed. They are illegal and ruthless, so it's whether you can approve of them or not. I did think that Furuya, as a PSP officer, would normally do things way harsher than this.."
  • Animal Motifs: During File 897: The Scarlet Truth, Akai referred to Amuro as Wolf (ōkami). The comparison is rather apt as wolves are intelligent predators who can camouflage themselves.
  • Anti-Hero: At his core, Rei Furuya is a man who seeks justice and desires to keep his beloved Japan safe. To achieve this however, he is willing to do numerous things others would balk at.
  • Apparently Powerless Puppetmaster: While actually the head of the Public Security Bureau, Amuro disguises himself as a bright café worker.
  • The Apprentice: After being impressed by his skills and accomplishments, Amuro pays Kogorō to take him under his wing and mentor him. In reality, Amuro did this to get closer to him for his own goals.
  • Assassination Attempt: His initial assignment as Bourbon from the Black Organization was to hunt down the fugitive agent Sherry and assassinate her. He believes he accomplished this in the Jet Black Mystery Train but that was actually Kaito Kid in disguise who escaped relatively unharmed.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Amuro posses a keen mind and is very observant. He claimed that he always knew that Akai was an 'FBI Dog,' which shows that he may have the observation skills to detect fellow NOCS, who infiltrated the Black Organization. From his investigations, he was able to determine that Conan was the puppeteer behind Sleeping Kogorō. His observation skills also allowed him to see that Conan planned everything in Akai's Fake Death instance, including the conclusion of his sentence, stating that Conan predicted everything perfectly as it played out at Raiha Pass.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He is the head of the Chiyoda Division in the PSB and an excellent boxer who is also skilled at jujitsu. His friend Wataru Date stated he was the strongest student at the Academy.
  • Badass Adorable: His cheerful disposition and cheery nature as Amuro makes him a surprising example of this.
  • Badass and Child Duo: While Conan is really 17, this is how their partnership appears as to outsiders looking on.
  • Badass Boast: In his Spin-Off manga, Amuro, already a Triple Shifter, declares to himself that he could live 100 lives simultaneously.
Rei: "Forget three…I could act out a hundred different faces…"
  • Badass Bookworm: Amuro is a well-read man who is also a capable police officer and an undercover agent.
  • Badass Biker: In Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time TIME.16: ..that was it, right? and TIME.3, there is a chase involving a car and a police motorcycle. During the chase, the criminal manages to get rid of the policeman by crashing into him, resulting in the policeman falling down and getting injured. Rei, who saw the incident, decides to continue the chase using his police motorcycle. Knowing that he is being chased again, the criminal bumps into a truck, which makes the boxes inside the truck fall out. One of the boxes hits Rei's head and knocks off his helmet. Fortunately, he manages to get the helmet back, while stating the road traffic law about wearing helmet while driving a motorcycle. In the end, he manages to corner the criminal at Tohto Harbor. Rei then ties the criminal at a warehouse, before contacting the police and leaving the scene secretly.
Rei: "Road traffic law, Article 71-4…Drivers of large motorcycles…must not ride without wearing a motorcycle helmet…"
  • Badass Crew: In the police academy, Amuro was part of one, consisting of himself, his ChildhoodFriend Hiromitsu Morofushi, the Big Guy Wataru Date, the Casanova Kenji Hagiwara and Hot-Blooded Jinpei Matsuda.
  • Badass Driver: Amuro is a capable driver, capable of precisely swinging his car in front of another during a high speed car chase in order to stop it with a controlled collision. His friend Hagiwara taught him how to drive before the events of the series.
    • In Detective Conan Film 20: The Darkest Nightmare, a Black Organization spy, code-name Curaçao, infiltrates the NPA Security Bureau Office, stealing the NOC list of MI6, BND, CSIS, FBI and CIA agents working undercover in the Black Organization. Yūya Kazami, an officer of the Public Security Bureau, catches her red handed and Curaçao is forced to run away. Rei Furuya, also known as Bourbon, attempts to stop her from escaping and later engages in a car chase on the Rainbow Bridge, with Akai Shūichi joining later.
    • In Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer, with the point of impact of the capsule launched from Hakuchō being the casino tower at the Edge of Ocean, Amuro and Conan race against time and traffic to allow Conan to shoot the ball to deflect the capsule, and the capsule falls harmlessly into the water.
    • In Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time Time 06: Be Sure Not To Bite Your Tongue Midori Kuriyama panickes as he wouldn't make it in time to a celebration party for Eri Kisaki. She gets into Amuro's Mazda RX-7 with him driving and her in the passenger seat. As Amuro drifts with his sports car, Midori notices a boy on the street and panics. Amuro takes him into the car while not stopping then takes him out of the car. As they see the office building, they find out the road ahead is submerged. Midori weeps and thanks Amuro for going to the trouble. She wants to show Eri her gratitude towards her. Amuro then instructs her to not bite her tongue. He continues to drive, but this time, on the road walls which shocked Midori even more.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: As a PSB investigator, Furuya dressed in a well-fitting two piece suit, accentuating his coolness.
  • Band of Brothers: Amuro had this dynamic with his core classmates from the police academy. They were as close as family and relied upon each other often.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Amuro has shown great capabilities as a boxer and learned jujitsu at the police academy like every other Tokyo cop.
  • Battle of Wits: Amuro has engaged in this sort of battle with numerous opponents but there are two standout occasions.
    • In the Jet Black Mystery Train , Amuro reveals that he is in fact Bourbon and attempts to murder Shiho Miyano. Bourbon and Vermouth lost because he did not and could not factor that Kaito Kid disguised himself as Shiho and escaped the explosion and the fact that the real Shiho was shrunk into a child.
    • In The Scarlet Return, Bourbon completely figured out Conan, Akai and Kir’s Faking the Dead plot and confronted Subaru Okiya at the Kudō Mansion. He even discovered Subaru’s true identity before Akai outed him as a PSB officer. Furuya lost because Akai was in a car with Jodie and Camel while Subsru was Yusaku in disguise.
  • Beneath the Mask: While Amuro is cheerful and friendly, Furuya is a driven and saddened man who will do anything to protect his precious Japan.
  • Benevolent Boss: Amuro is very lenient towards his various subordinates especially Yūya Kazami. In ''Zero the Enforcer” when Kazami fails to realize Conan put a bug on him, Furuya destroys the listening device and quickly forgives him.
  • Berserk Button: Amuro hates Shūichi Akai with a passion for being involved with the death of his best friend. His name and even the color red sets him off. In Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time Time.11 Putting Aside Rank, Furuya is at a bar with Kazami. When Kazami orders a Whiskey Soda with Rye (Akai’s Black Organization Code Name) Whiskey as its base, Furuya gives him a Death Glare. Spooked, Kazami immediately changes the Rye for Bourbon (Furuya’s Black Organization Code Name).
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As Amuro he puts on a kind and friendly facade but still is a trained boxer with jujitsu knowledge.
  • Blackmail: Bourbon is aware of Vermouth’s secret relationship with The Boss, as noted at the end of The Scarlet Showdown. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization if he is killed by her.
  • Boxing Battler: Amuro is well-trained as a boxer and has used his skills to subdue many a culprit.
  • A Boy and His X: A Man And His Dog in this case. In his Spin-Off manga, Amuro forms this dynamic with a stray Hokkaido inu breed dog he adopts and christens Haro.
  • Breakout Character: One of the most popular characters in the series, in spite of being introduced very far into its run. His popularity is significant enough that he got his own Spin-Off in 2018, DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime.
  • Breakout Villain: Bourbon was the Hidden Villain of the Bourbon Saga and once his identity was revealed to the audience he went on to be one of the franchise’s most popular characters.
  • Broken Ace: Amuro is talented, determined and intelligent but he is the Sole Survivor of his Band of Brothers and obsessed with revenge against a man he knows did not commit that crime.
  • But Not Too Foreign: While Amuro is half Japanese, the other half of his heritage has yet to be revealed.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Rei Furuya is a member of the PSB and always strives to follow the law, even off-duty. Despite this, he can be a Cowboy Cop as well.
  • Call-Forward: In Detective Conan: Episode "One"- The Great Detective Turned Small, Bourbon is mentioned by Vodka when he is discussing the plans to meet with the company president to Gin in his Porsche 356 A. This is a retelling of the beginning of the series, but Bourbon’s character did not initially exist at the time.
Gin: "Bourbon, huh? He has a sharp nose, as usual."
  • Casting Gag: Tōru Furuya protrays Rei Furuya an intelligent and handsome young man who is The Ace, a Chick Magnet, can be driven and withdrawn and has a Non-Human Sidekick named Haro. In Gundam he portrays Amuro Ray, an intelligent and handsome young man who is The Ace, a Chick Magnet, can be driven and withdrawn and has a Non-Human Sidekick named Haro.
  • The Cameo: Bourbon is briefly mentioned in Detective Conan: Episode "One"- The Great Detective Turned Small when Vodka is speaking to Gin.
  • Canine Companion: In his Spin-Off Amuro adopts Haro who becomes his Non-Human Sidekick.
  • Celibate Hero: In razor-sharp contrast to most of the main characters in this series, Amuro has remained mostly uninterested in romance and the attention he gets from the opposite sex barring his Precocious Crush on Elena Miyano in his youth and his small Ship Tease with his Café Poirot co-worker Azusa Enomoto.
  • Character Name Alias: Not In-Universe, but his primary alias Tōru Amuro references The Protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam, Amuro Ray.
  • Character Title: Both Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer and Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time feature his nickname Zero in the title.
  • The Chase: Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano, which the CIA spy Kir heard about and informed the FBI of.
  • Chaste Hero: Amuro never acts upon the numerous advances he receives from women.
  • The Chessmaster: Amuro has shown a propensity for creating intricate plans with numerous moving pieces for various goals. Their success rates depend on his opponents.
    • In Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer, Furuya gets to really show off hos manipulation skills. After the bombing at the start of the film, Furuya framed his mentor Kogorō as the culprit. Then he hired Kyoko Tachibana to represent him, before releasing Kogorō once the bombing was no longer deemed an accident. He admits to Conan that he specifically framed Kogorō so he could have Conan as his “collaborator”.
  • Chessmaster Sidekick: Amuro plays this part to Kogorō, pretending to be a cheerful young man following his footsteps when in reality Amuro is (usually) more intelligent than Kogorō. Amuro is not as flashy in showing his true deduction skills, instead of leading Kogorō with hints to reach conclusions.
  • Chick Magnet: Numerous female characters including Azusa, Sonoko Suzuki, Ayumi Yoshida and numerous others have expressed an attraction towards Amuro.
  • Childhood Friends: Hiromitsu Morofushi and Rei Furuya were friends since childhood. Rei helped him overcome the suffering of Aphasia due to his parents' deaths. He also taught Rei some cooking skills.
  • Classified Information: As a member of the Black Organization and the PSB, Amuro is perfectly fine with leaving his allies Locked Out of the Loop. (To be fair, they do it to him too). For instance he hid the fact that he was a PSB investigator and who Rum’s Secret Identity was.
  • Cloak and Dagger: As a PSB investigator, Rei conducts various missions which are depicted as both exciting and dangerous.
  • Code Name: As a member of the Black Organization, he goes under the codename “Bourbon”, a straight whiskey distilled from a mash having at least 51 percent corn in addition to malt and rye.
  • Conservation of Competence: Downplayed. Furuya’s PSB subordinates are far from incompetent but they do not seem as effortlessly skilled as Furuya is.
  • Consummate Liar: Amuro is a terrific liar, being able to trick multiple people about numerous things without effort.
  • Cool Car: Rei Furuya drives a white colored Mazda FD RX-7. His RX-7 is a reference to the white Gundam that the Mobile Suit Gundam character Amuro Ray piloted, the RX-78-2. His license plate number is 新宿 330, と 73-10.
  • Cowboy Cop: Amuro mostly follows the law, but will be lax towards rules in extreme situations.
  • Cover Identity Anomaly: It is has been unrevealed how the Black Organization does not know about Amuro’s police past.
  • Creator's Favorite: While his creator Aoyama-sensei sees all of Amuro’s “faces” as the same man, his seiyuu Tōru Furuya admitted in an interview he likes “Rei Furuya” the best.
Q: "Which of Amuro's triple faces do you specially like?"
Tōru Furuya: "My favorite one is that one which bets his life in protecting the nation of Japan, the face of Furuya Rei. He's a hero of justice. He has a lot of actions to show his skills, and he's got a lot of cool lines. I've been working as an anime voice actor because I wanted to become a hero. With Furuya's role, I can fully enjoy that. But when he has to deal with Akai, he suddenly turns child-like. There's also what happened with Scotch, and his emotions jump forward. That also can be called a charm of him, but..."
  • Cute Bookworm: Amuro is an adorable waiter who is well-read on numerous subjects.
  • The Dandy: Amuro possess a notable Unlimited Wardrobe and is very fashionable. He is also very well-groomed and takes care of his appearance. Kogorō has even called him “effeminate”.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a child, Amuro was bullied by other children for being biracial. When he grew up, he failed to prevent his childhood best friend from committing suicide and every member of his Band of Brothers died, leaving him behind.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Like [1] other members of the Black Organization, Bourbon is usually donned in all black. However, he is The Mole so it is just for appearances.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Not believing the rumors that Shūichi Akai was dead, Bourbon disguised himself as Scar!Akai with Vermouth’s help to gauge the reactions pf his acquaintances.
  • Deceptive Disciple: Because Amuro is lying to his mentor Kogorō about essentially everything about him, this makes him an example of this trope.
  • Deep Cover Agent: Furuya has managed to worm his way into the Black Organization as a reconnaissance and deduction operative. He has shown a willingness to go to extremes to secure his position.
  • Delinquent Hair: As a child, other children thought Amuro dyed his hair when in actuality it is natural.
  • Demolitions Expert: In the non-canon movie The Darkest Nightmare, Amuro was able to defuse a bomb when he remembered Jinpei Matsuda who taught him that. In the Wild Police Story manga he was able to defuse a bomb with Matsuda's help.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: Amuro is introduced as a friendly Private Detective who worked at a café to pay the bills. We later learn that he was secretly Bourbon the entire time. After that, it is revealed that his true name is Rei Furuya and he is The Mole from the PSB.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Not normally but in the climax of Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer Furuya drives like a madman, complete with a Slasher Smile due to being in a Race Against the Clock.
  • Dumb Blonde: Inverted. Amuro has naturally blonde hair and is one of the series’s best sleuths and foremost geniuses.
  • Deuteragonist: Whenever he shows up, Amuro automatically becomes the second-most important character excluding the period of time the audience knew he was Bourbon before they learned he was a cop.
  • Due to the Dead: In the conclusion of The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love, Amuro visits his friend Wataru Date’s grave and leaves behind a toothpick, which Date always chewed on like his father. He also deletes from his cellphone the last message that Date had sent him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, Amuro’s first appearance was during the new opening theme song in 2012.
  • Elite Agents Above the Law: The PSB are Secret Police who are beholden to the same rules as other cops and this fact occasionally causes strife.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Like most competent detectives in this series, Amuro has a wealth of knowledge on numerous subjects and topics.
  • Enemy Mine: When he broke into the Kudō Mansion, Amuro was initially greeted with a pistol to the head but he was then invited for tea and joined forced with Akai and Conan to defeat the Black Organization.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Just like other detectives in this series, Amuro thinks or says “I see. So that’s how it was…!” upon cracking a case.
  • Expressive Mask: In his Scar!Akai mask he was a splitting image of the real deal but he did not speak as he could not imitate voices.
  • Extreme Doormat: As Amuro, Furuya is rather passive as to not attract attention, though he will stand up for others if need be. In his introduction Wedding Eve he shrugs off the abuse of his client’s jealous husband.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: In Detective Conan: Police Academy Arc-Wild Police Story when Wataru Date stands up for Furuya to bullies because he is dating a foreigner, Hagiwara asks him if he “likes Furuya-chan” and reassures him that he is okay with it.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: A Rare Male Example. Amuro’s golden blonde hair highlight his already good looks and make him popular with women In-Universe and out.
  • Evil Duo: Bourbon has this dynamic with in the Black Organization with fellow reconnaissance operative Vermouth.
  • Fake Relationship: Downplayed but when Vermouth disguised herself as Azusa, she was more affectionate towards Amuro than the real person is.
  • Fan Service With A Smile: A Gender-Inverted example. Many women come to Poirot simply to be served by Amuro.
  • A Father to His Men: Amuro is very compassionate towards his subordinates and always leads by example.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Amuro has this dynamic with his police academy friends especially Jinpei Matsuda. The story begins with the two of them engaged in a fist fight but by the end they are as close as brothers.
  • Frame-Up: The film’s Inciting Incident a restaurant bombing, is pinned on Kogorō Mōri. This was revealed to have been done by Rei Furuya for many reasons.
  • Friend on the Force: As a PSB investigator, Rei is one himself, but he has in own in the form of Hyōe Kuroda currently the Tokyo Police First Division Managing Officer, former an officer from the National Police Agency.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: The way Detective Conan is structured means that Conan is the only consistent character and the supporting cast changes case after case. Over time this means that characters in certain groups have never had even a conversation with other characters in different groups.
  • Frontline General: Despite his genius Furuya leads his PSB subordinates into conflicts as seen in the The Scarlet Return arc.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: In File 1081: ‘’Inheritor of the Will'' Sato questions Furuya if they met prior. We saw that they did when college adged Sato checked out Instructor Onizuka’s RX-7, but Furuya remains elusive.
Sato: "We really did meet before right?"
    Furuya: "Yes, perhaps…I don’t remember anything though…"
  • Foreshadowing: Amuro’s status as Scar!Akai was hinted at ahead of time.
    • In Scar Akai's appearance at the Beika Dept. Store, Rei was the only known Black Organization operative not seen at the same time as Scar Akai. Gin began discussing Bourbon with Kir after seeing this Scar Akai.
    • Rei was absent from his job at the Poirot when Scar Akai appeared outside the detective agency where Masumi was walking with Ran. This is also notable because this occurred right after Masumi and Rei met and Rei found out Masumi was friends with Ran.
    • In Scar Akai's appearances at the Teito Bank case, the Beika Dept Store, and outside Mōri Detective Agency, he never spoke in front of anyone who would know Shūichi’s real voice, suggesting that this Scar Akai could not imitate voices like Vermouth and Kaito Kid.
    • Rei is right-handed like Scar Akai.
    • He has the right body size, face shape, and height to disguise as Scar Akai.
    • He has an interest in the Mōri Detective Agency which makes sense because Scar Akai saw fit to keep Kogorō’s cellphone number with him.
  • His status as Bourbon was also well-hinted at.
    • He is a detective and very skilled at information gathering as Kir described.
    • He is male as the codename Bourbon implies. The Black Organization codename pattern is that hard liquors are used for men's codenames, and Kir used a male specific pronoun to refer to Bourbon in the ‘’Department Store Bomber Case''.
    • When Rei offers Kogorō an unknown "tuition" per case Kogorō brings him on, the amount he offers is enough to get Kogorō excited and accepts Rei as an apprentice without hesitation. This is strange because Rei would not be expected to have much money because he is young, lacks a formal agency, and works part-time at restaurants in one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.
    • Unlike other detectives so far, Rei is a calculating type who chose avoidable courses of action (or non-action) that may have resulted in harm to others if things had gone slightly differently. In his introductory case, Rei doesn't intervene when a suspect he knows to be innocent is half a step from destroying his exonerating evidence because it seems Rei was testing Kogorō. Later, Rei noticed that Conan was alone with a murderer and considered that Conan might have been kidnapped, yet said nothing about it until others realized Conan and the murder suspect were gone.
    • The timing of Bourbon's report to Vermouth about Shiho's appearance at Gunma suggested Rei was Bourbon. The other two Bourbon suspects, Subaru and Masumi, both had seen Haibara and were suspicious of her long before Bourbon reported Shiho to Vermouth, but the video from Gunma was the first time Rei had seen an image of Shiho or Haibara. Subaru had met Haibara in person in his first appearance case and multiple times afterward. Masumi had obtained a picture of Haibara via a reflection from Agasa's glasses in the Ayumi kidnapping case. Both of them should have reported to Vermouth if they were Bourbon soon after their respective encounters.
    • He completely cut off communication with his close friend Wataru Date. A complete cutoff would not be necessary if Rei worked for a non-secret organization like the Tokyo Metropolitan Police District. It is more sensible that Rei was trying to protect Date from any potential dangers associated with infiltrating the Black Organization as a member of the National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division.
    • Rei kept a bug detector with him - only Organization members have been shown to do this, while normal detectives like Conan do not.
    • In File 793-Private Eye the first case in which Rei appears in, the detective Sanji Haruoka orders the waiter (Rei himself) to bring him the Bourbon with ice.
    • Amuro is the most likely suspect of the three (Subaru, Masumi, Amuro) to be Bourbon via the process of elimination. Subaru Okiya is not Bourbon, as Conan, who is normally a very careful person, invites him to stay as his Shinichi's home. If Subaru was someone that Conan did not know, it would be very unlikely that Conan would let him live in the Kudo's house and near Haibara (Sherry). Masumi Sera who looks like Shūichi Akai is most likely a relative of the FBI agent and thus not an enemy. She also knew Conan was Shin’ichi, and thus must have deduced that shrinking was possible. Despite knowing this, Haibara was not threatened until her adult form was captured on video before the mystery train case.
    • Of the three major suspects, only Amuro isn't particularly interested in Conan at first. Instead, he kisses up to Kogorō. There was no reason for a member of the Black Organization to care about Conan since all the blame for Conan's prior meddling has fallen on Sherry, Kogorō, the FBI, or an unknown person. The other two suspects, Subaru and Masumi, either was interested in or knew Conan's true identity from the outset.
    • In the Jet Black Mystery Train, before The Reveal, when smoke had began being emitted, he opened a door, and claimed that he saw fire when he knew there was no fire at all.
    • It should probably be mentioned that the fact Rei found out about Conan's intelligence levels and observational skills, as well as his clear detective mastery, but yet was unable to connect him to Yusako Kudō at all as possibly being Shin’ichi, implies that the side effect of APTX 4869 is not well known, and possibly is only known about by Vermouth and Sherry at the moment, with the possible exception of the boss. This theory is supported by the fact Vermouth wants Sherry dead to some unknown level, as it eliminates more evidence of the drug's side effect, making this theory highly likely. Even before the Bourbon Reveal, he began realizing how intelligent Conan was, and probably that he was more intelligent and observant than Kogorō, however his focused remained on Kogorō, until Conan was hit with a tennis racket, and he began really watching and observing Conan.
    • The reason this connects back to Bourbon's identity as well is that he never suspected Haibara of being Sherry, which if he had known the side effect, he should have, which would have drawn his concern during the Sweet and Cold Delivery Service case when he realized Haibara was alive.
  • The final reveal of his true identity was completely well-thought through as well.
    • Tōru attended the police academy and was close friends with police officer Wataru Date. Amuro cut off contact with Date to protect him from the Black Organization's investigation while infiltrating. Tōru later paid his respects at the grave of detective Wataru Date
    • Tōru reacted negatively to the presence of the FBI investigating illegally in Japan. He told them to "get out of his Japan" because they were infringing on his and the PSB's jurisdiction.
    • Tōru was able to amass several assistants to help him capture the person he thought was Shūichi Akai despite not having the backing of the Black Organization with his plan. The assistants were members of the National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division.
  • Full-Body Disguise: As Scar!Akai, Bourbon dressed in a full disguise of his rival thought dead.
  • Full-Name Basis: Furuya almost always refers to the man he hates the most, Shūichi Akai by his full name. Usually yelling it.

  • Good Is Not Soft: While his motives are For Great Justice, he is willing to go to disturbing extremes to accomplish his goals. For example, He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car to lure out FBI agents.
  • Gorgeous Gaijin: Gorgeous Half-Gaijin in this case. Amuro is blessed with good looks and takes care of his appearance.
  • Government Agency of Fiction: Subverted Trope. Furuya’s organization The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Public Security Bureau (PSB) (警視庁公安部 Keishichō-kōanbu) is very real.
  • Great Detective: Amuro quickly establishes himself as one of the series’s brightest geniuses and best sleuths, figuring out both exactly how Akai was Faking the Dead and that Conan is “Sleeping Kogorō”.
  • Grin of Audacity: Amuro usually keeps a stony face in crises, he breaks out a particularly wild grin during the climax of Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer.
  • Guile Hero: As a man of many takents and hats, his greatest is his keen intellect and his sharp mind.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: Amuro has this dynamic with The Rival Akai. Akai has ebony hair as is very much The Stoic. Blonde Amuro pretends to be a Gender-Inverted Genki Girl, but even his true personality is Hot-Blooded, especially when it comes to his vengeance.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Just like the large majority of the cast, Flashbacks to Amuro’s childhood show that he has always had the same haircut.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Furuya has this dynamic with Conan in the 22nd film. For a good portion of the runtime, the two are at odds for many different factors. He also has this relationship with Akai due to his hatred of him.

  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Before his untimely suicide Hiromitsu Morofushi/Scotch was Furuya’s childhood best friend who accompanied him through police academy, the PSB and The Infiltration into the Black Organization.
    • Currently his subordinate Yūya Kazami is the person that comes the closest to fulfilling this role but their relationship is rather professional.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Furuya despite having noble goals can slip into this. In the most heinous he fully planned to hospitalize elementary school teacher Natsuko Shibuya by hitting her with his car to get further into the Black Organization.
  • Hidden Depths: Amuro is a very layered man and only lets people know what he feels they should know. Among many other thinks, he is a good musician.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: In sharp contrast to his fellow Black Organization operative Gin who is never seen without his black Conspicuous Trenchcoat, Bourbon is a café waiter.
  • Hollywood Police Driving Academy: Mostly Averted. Amuro is very much a Badass Driver but he can be extremely reckless at times.
  • Homage: To Amuro Ray, complete with white RX-7 which is Shout-Out to RX-78-2. And with the same seiyuu, to boot. His real name, Rei Furuya, comes from both the character and seiyuu as well. In the ''Zero's Tea Time'' Spin-Off, he adopts a dog he eventually names Haro, also the name of Gundam's spherical Series Mascot.
  • Hot Pursuit: The twentieth movie opens on one, with Amuro in his White 1991 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type-A and Akai in his Race Red 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 SVT [S197] hunting down Curaçao in her stolen Dark Blue 1980 Toyota Mark II [X60] on the Rainbow Bridge.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Amuro plays this part to Kogorō. While he has solved more cases than Amuro when he got serious, Kogorō so rarely does so, leaving his usually smarter apprentice Amuro to help him out.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: Tōru Amuro made his debut in File 793-Private Eyeand Episodes 667-668-Wedding Eve in April and September of 2012. This means that Amuro debuted eighteen years after the first chapter was published and has gone of to be the series’s biggest Breakout Character.
  • I Have Many Names: Since his introduction, Amuro has gone through a multitude of alias and been called many things.
    • “Tōru Amuro” is the name he is introduced with. Amuro is a cheerful Private Detective who works as a café waiter.
    • ”Bourbon” is his Black Organization Code Name. Bourbon is The Smart Guy and the Knowledge Broker for the entire syndicate. Gin calls him “a detective like Sherlock Holmes”.

    • Rei Furuya is his birth name. As described by his seiyuu, he is a “hero of justice” who engages in espionage tactics.

  • Inconsistent Spelling: In the English-speaking fandom there is an inconsistency on how to spell Amuro’s first name. Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time Theme Tune confirms it’s the the first one.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: As a child, Amuro had one with none other than Elena "Hell's Angel" Miyano.
    • File 1011 elaborates on this: Elena felt a kinship with the young Rei Furuya since she was also part Japanese. She encouraged him to not feel discouraged by his foreign ancestry and try to get along with other children.
  • Indifferent Beauty: Despite being engaged in espionage, Amuro never feels the need to turn on the charm to get someone attracted to him to do something he wants.
  • The Infiltration: On orders from the PSB, Furuya infiltrated The Black Organization as the intelligence operative Bourbon. He teamed up with fellow moles Scotch and Rye.

Rumi apologizes and says she lost her grip and accidentally let go of the trap door. Amuro hearing that, is left wondering whether it was all an illusion or not. It is also shown a shogi piece form on Rumi's back pocket which means it was indeed her who was inside the basement, retrieving her lost bishop shogi piece.

  • Minority Police Officer: Furuya counts as one as he is a mixed-race investigator in a racially homogeneous country like Japan.
  • Misfit Mobilization Moment: In the aptly titled Chapter 3 Of One Heart And Mind in Detective Conan: Police Academy Arc-Wild Police Story, the five come together with a single goal, to rescue their instructor Onizuka who has strangled and suspended in the air by a rope from a fallen construction worker. Specifically:
  • Mistaken for Dyed: As a child people did not realize that Amuro’s blonde hair was natural and bullied him for it.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: Bourbon appears to have this dynamic with his partner Vermouth, but in reality, he is the one in control of the situation.
  • The Mole: Like Mizunashi Rena/Kir Bourbon has infiltrated the Black Organization. However, in his case, he has done so under the orders of the Public Security Bureau as opposed to the CIA.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Amuro has quickly become one of this series’s biggest examples. He is a tall man with androgynous facial features and a lean, swimmer-like build.
  • Multi-Character Title: Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer has the name of The Protagonist first followed by Zero’s name as the titular “Enforcer”.
  • My Greatest Failure: While he fully blames Akai for not being to stop Hiromitsu’s suicide, the fact that it was Furuya’s steps who spooked his friend into going through with it might weigh on him.
  • My Hero, Zero: “Zero” is the English translation of Furuya’s first name “Rei” and it is both his childhood nickname used by many characters and many of the titles he stars in.
  • Mysterious Past: Amuro previously attended the police academy and was a friend of Takagi's deceased superior, Wataru Date. Becomes even more mysterious after one wonder how someone from the police academy became a member of the Black Organization, or if he was already a member of the Organization before applying to the academy.
    • We later learn that he joined the PSB and it was them who assigned him to The Infiltration.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Not In-Universe, but Amuro’s names are derived from the very first The Protagonist of Gundam franchise.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: And how. Amuro is a very intelligent and well-read man who could also pass as a model.
  • Nerves of Steel: If Akai is not involved in any manner, Amuro has repeatedly shown an ability to think with a cool head and not panic in dangerous situations.
    • The standout example occurs in the conclusion of The Scarlet Truth. Bourbon says he would appreciate Vermouth's help whenever he needs it and says that he is the only one who knows her secret, regarding her and the Boss' relationship. Incensed, Vermouth points a gun to his head and threatens to murder him. Bourbon calmly reminds her that should he be compromised, her secret would be exposed, which calms her down.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: On the surface, he has this dynamic with Akai. Noble Male Amuro has blonde hair and pretends to be cheerful when he is really professional and focused. Akai should be the Rougish Male as he has raven-colored hair, is chain-smoker and is rather aloof. In reality Amuro is willing to do things Akai wouldn’t dream of for the sake of his mission.
  • Nonviolent Initial Confrontation: In Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer, Conan confronts him initially when he realizes Amuro is behind Kogorō’s Frame-Up.
  • Numerological Motif: Amuro is represented by the number “zero”. It is the childhood nickname Hiromitsu gave him as well as how titles he stars in are named. Also, it sounds awesome.

  • Obfuscating Stupidity: As Tōru Amuro he doesn’t outright pretend to be unintelligent, but he definitely lets Kogorō look better.
  • Odd Couple: Amuro has this dynamic with his mentor Kogorō. Where Amuro is cheerful, professional and patient, Kogorō is cynical, slovenly and brash.
  • Odd Friendship: When off-duty, he and Kazami make a surprisingly good match, despite or perhaps because of their differences.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: With both Kogorō and Hyōe Kuroda, Furuya is the Young Cop to their Old Cop (or Old ex-cop in Kogorō’s case).
  • Older Sidekick: Subverted with Kogorō. His “number one disciple” Amuro is 8-9 years younger than him.
Narration: Despite being older, he’s a subordinate. Despite being younger, he’s the boss.
    • He also is newer to be a café waiter than Azusa, despite being older than her.
  • Older Than They Look: Many a fan was shocked to learn that Amuro is 29, given his youthful looks and his rather boyish voice.
  • One Degree of Separation: We later learn that in his childhood, Misao Yamamura befriended Hiromitsu. Has fate gone another way, Furuya could have been Childhood Friends with Yamamura as well.
  • Only Friend: As a child, the only person that was his friend was Hiromitsu.

  • Out-Gambitted: Despite his intelligence there have been two times, Amuro has been outplayed.

    • In the The Scarlet Return arc, Amuro had perfectly figured out the fake Akai death plan and the fact that Akai was Subaru, but did not think that it was Yusaku disguised as Subaru this time around.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: Numerous times, Amuro has had nightmares about the past, especially the moment he walked up to Rye standing up in front of Scotch’s corpse.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Amuro is a patriot. He thinks of Japan the way some people think about lovers and says as much in Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer.
  • Precocious Crush: As a child, Furuya had an innocent one of Elena Miyano, due to her kindness towards him.
  • Platonic Boy/Girl Heroes: A villainous version. Bourbon and Vermouth are partners but neither has romantic feelings toward each other.
  • Playing Nice for Now: After Amuro is let into the Kudō household, he decides to put as his grudge against Akai to defeat the Black Organization.

  • Psychotic Smirk: He bursts into a completely insane one during Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer’s Race Against the Clock.
  • Punny Name: His first name Rei translates into his nickname Zero.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Initially Amuro was always Bourbon but he was supposed to be an antagonist. Aoyama-sensei changed his mind, however.
Q: "Please tell us about Amuro's debut."
Aoyama-sensei : "Truth to be told, Amuro wasn't from the Public Safety (PS) when he made his debut. He was actually a very bad guy. But when I was drawing the conclusion part of his debut episode I thought that he was a cool guy, that I wanted him to be one of the good guys. So I suddenly changed that mid-way and turned him a PS guy. Since I was thinking of making a PS character appear. I wanted to make the case be something Amuro had set up to lure Kogorō out into the open but I gave up on that, too"
  • Real Men Can Cook: Amuro is a very capable and assertive man and he is also a Supreme Chef.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Amuro takes good care of his appearance, has a multitude of clothes and has musical skills.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Amuro is the Red Oni to Akai’s Blue Oni especially when the former is in the latter’s presence.

  • Relocating the Explosion: In the finale of Detective Conan Film 20: The Darkest Nightmare, instead of defusing in the final bomb, Amuro throws it in front of the Black Organization’s Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, allowing Conan and Akai to see the helicopter in the night.
  • Renaissance Man: Amuro has a wide range of skills which contribute to his various activities. He has shown be be an excellent cook, a boxer with jujitsu skills, gun skills, a superb driver, an excellent sleuth, hacking abilities, a skier, excellent survival skills and many more.

    • Much later, it also turns out that he's actually a mole infiltrating the Black Organization and his real name is Rei Furuya. Furuya’s actual allegiance is that it's not the FBI, which he has some disdain for; he is in the employment of the Public Security Bureau.
  • The Rival: Amuro has this dynamic with Akai, even in the Black Organization, their rivalry was legendary.
  • Rivals Team Up: Amuro has had to team up with Akai against the Black Organization both in the final act of Detective Conan Film 20: The Darkest Nightmare and in the main series after a meeting.
  • Rookie Male, Experienced Female: While Bourbon never shows an experience at his job, he is still a rookie compared to Vermouth who has been an adult since the late-30’s Yukiko was a child.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: With his incredible deduction skills, he was able to figure out the entirety of Akai, Conan and Kir’s Akai death plan.
  • Secondary Character Title: Detective Conan Film 22: Zero The Enforcer Conan is still The Protagonist but it has Zero’s name in the title.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Amuro is the Sensitive Guy to Akai and Kogorō’s Manly Men. He is more effeminate and stylish than the other two and is prone to lashing out when enraged.
  • Secret Identity: Tōru Amuro the Private Detective and café waiter is a fake identity he uses to hide his true one and get around.
  • Secret-Identity Identity: Subverted. Despite having three distinct “faces” Amuro never seems to get lost in his different identities.
  • Secret Identity Vocal Shift: It is subtle but Tōru Furuya confirms in an interview that he approaches voicing Amuro’s three different “faces” in different ways.
Q: "What points do you have to respectively act his 3 faces of Amuro Tōru, Furuya Rei and Bourbon?"
Tōru Furuya: "In the case of Amuro Tōru, working at the Poirot part-time, I take into account the image that he behaves like a kind guy and is an attractive young man. Conan knows his identity, but when there are other Detective Boys present, he acts as if he was but a strong and young detective. That's how I voice him like. I use a bit of a higher tone of voice, with a soft feeling. In the case of Furuya Rei, he's a worker and a pro so I voice him in a sharp and edgy manner. To give out a dark feeling I make a lower tone of voice. There also times in which he gives out orders to Kazami, so there are parts in which he turns stricter. I add changes in scenes like those.
Speaking of voice tones, I use the lowest one when I voice him as Bourbon. Vermouth and he have a grip of each others' weaknesses so it's a bit special yet when he talks to Gin or similar scenes I use a very low tone. Also, when it comes to Akai Shūichi, he's got a feud with him involving what happened with Scotch so he clearly hates him. His emotions get the best of him. When he faced Akai, he behaves like a kid. So when Akai is around he unusually brings out his emotions in a straightforward way. When reading the movie's script, when he moves around as Furuya Rei, and when he talks to Conan... I thought that it would be better to use Amuro's voice for those scenes. When I had to act scenes as Furuya Rei, I wrote the "Kou" kanji from "kouan (Public Security)" on my copy of the script and when it was Amuro Tooru I wrote "an". So they overlapped with "kouan" and was hard to understand even for me, so I wrote the katakana"
  • Secret-Keeper: Furuya is aware of both Conan and Vermouth’s secrets, yet he has not told anyone else yet.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Conan has no idea that Amuro has figured out who he really is but Amuro has not filled him in yet.

It is charged with counterterrorism, counterintelligence, countering cybercrime and surveillance of potentially threatening groups, organizations, and social phenomena. It also supervises the prefectural police forces for those issues. The undercover agent Rei Furuya is a member of one of the departments of the NPA SB called the National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division(警察庁警備局警備企画課 Keisatsuchō Keibi-kyoku Keibi-Kikaku-ka) which has the nickname Zero.
  • Stealth Expert: This is a given for any member of the Black Organization, especially one who is an intelligence and reconnaissance agent.
  • Sole Survivor: Out of his five academy friends, Furuya is the only alive after numerous separate circumstances.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Especially as Rei Furuya, he is impeccably garbed for any occasion.
  • Sherlock Scan: Like other geniuses in this series, a mere glance is all Amuro needs to get a lay of the land.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: We later learn that Bourbon is The Mole and thus on the side of the angels.
  • Ship Tease: Amuro occasionally has suggestive moments with his co-worker Azusa, especially on her end.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: All of Amuro’s names reference the Gundam character Amuro Ray.
  • Showy Invincible Hero: In his own Spin-Off, Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time Amuro can pretty much do anything.
  • Slasher Smile: He is usually stony-faced when he is serious but can break out a grin of certain occasions.
  • The Smart Guy: Bourbon is this for the Black Organization, as their intelligence and reconnaissance operative.
  • Ski-Resort Episode: In Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time Time.23 Don’t Try This At Home, Amuro replaced Kogorō for professional ski lessons in Gunma.

    • Bourbon is an alcoholic beverage. Like other male members of the Blacks Organization, it is a hard liquor.
    • His names Tōru Amuro and Rei Furuya are a Shout-Out to Mobile Suit Gundam.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: During his time in the Organization, at some point Rei became The Rival of Shūichi Akai (alias Dai
Moroboshi). Rei considered Shūichi as his Worthy Opponent, wanted to compare his capabilities with the latter, and thinks that he is the only one capable of defeating Shūichi.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: According to Aoyama-sensei in an interview, he likes celery.
Aoyama-sensei: "Ah. But he doesn't dislike Conan, though. What he dislikes is Akai and what he likes is celery (laughs)."
  • Tragic Keepsake: After he joined the Secret Police, Furuya cut off contract with all his loved ones for their safety. Specifically, Wataru Date sent him a text asking him what was up and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. The conclusion of The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love shows Furuya visiting Date’s grave and deleted said text message.
  • Triple Shifter: As the narration in Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time succinctly puts it:
Narration:Amuro Tōru: A man with three faces-Furuya Rei (PSB), Amuro Tōru (detective), Bourbon (Black Organization). To protect Japan as a member of the PSB, he normally works at Cafe Poirot while apprenticing to Kogorō as a “detective-in-training”. On the other side of things, he’s also infiltrating the Black Organization, investagting the dark side of society.
  • Tranquil Fury: When he does become angry this is usually how Amuro chooses to express said anger.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Five in these cases. He has been known as “Scar!Akai”, “Tōru Amuro”, “Bourbon”, “Zero” and “Rei Furuya”.
  • Undercover Cop Reveal: Akai reveals that Bourbon is a fellow mole on orders from the PSB.
  • The Unfettered: Amuro was prepared to run over an elementary school teacher and his own client to further dive into the Black Organization.
  • Unknown Rival: Shūichi appears to help and protect Rei in some cases, he gradually wants to compensate for the losses which Rei has experienced, he also reveals that he doesn't want to be Rei's enemy. This is contrasted with Rei’s murderous hatred for him.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Amuro seemingly wears a new outfit every time he appears something even noted as Word of God.
Q: "Why is it that the characters' clothing is so fashionable?"
Aoyama-sensei: "I used to buy a lot of clothes at Anan or Non-no or CanCam (laughs). Amuro often appears in the latest cases, so they asked me to think up Amuro's clothing (laughs). I have them think of making files about the clothes in every case."
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Unfortunately, it was his steps that spooked a distraught Scotch, who had his identity exposed, into going through with his suicide to protect his loved ones.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: :In order to further infiltrate the Organization's inner circle, he planned to run over an elementary school teacher and hand over Shūichi Akai to them. Akai calls him out on this, reminding him not to forget their true targets.
  • Walking Spoiler: Amuro’s fake allegiance to the Black Organization and his real allegiance to the PSB are major twists in the story that are blankly stated in several movies are mostly left untagged on this page.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After learning about what he planned to do to Natsuko Shibuya, Akai tells him to not lose focus on their goal.
  • Wire Dilemma: Amuro uses the knowledge Matsuda gave him to defuse a bomb in Detective Conan Film 20: The Darkest Nightmare.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: While a noble man, Amuro hides a deep ruthless streak in pursuing his goals.
  • Villain Respect: While Gin is annoyed by Bourbon, he flat out calls him a genius when he is talking to Kir.
Gin: "Heh, Always doing as he pleases... that bastard irritates me as usual."
    Kir: "Who do you mean?"
Gin: "Like you said, one who you wish only existed in novels. A detective like Sherlock Holmes."

    • He introduced fighting Matsuda and the later even loses a tooth. Almost immediately the two are peas in a pod.

    Yuya Kazami

Assistant Inspector Yuya Kazami

Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (JP) / Ray Chase (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuya_kazami.jpg

An MPD Public Security Bureau agent who serves as Furuya's right-hand man. Was also comrades with the late Hiromitsu Morofushi, a.k.a. Scotch.

  • Bumbling Sidekick: Sometimes becomes one to Zero, especially in Zero's Tea Time.
  • Distressed Dude: Whether he's kidnapped and locked in a room with a dead body, manhandled and left to die by a suspect, or being caught in an explosion on two separate occasions (one nearly causing him to fall to his death), he frequently needs to be helped out of jams by either Conan or Furuya.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Technically on the same team as Megure, Sato and Takagi but is greatly disliked by them. While it's Kazami's job to investigate the BO and national security cases, in-story that means seizing cases once under regular police authority (including First Division). His unfriendly behaviour towards them doesn't help the situation.
    • In Movie 20 he forces Megure to hand over the amnesiac Curaçao and all related case files on suspicions of her being a BO member (which she is), and has his team playing support role for the rest of the movie. The fact that he was going to torture her on the Ferris wheel if her memories returned would likely have been more reason for them to hate him.
    • In Movie 22 he immediately assumes a guilty-until-proven-innocent stance after arresting Kogoro for allegedly bombing the Edge of Ocean convention centre and is fully prepared to prosecute him without a confirmed motive. He continues to be a hardass towards Megure as he vouches for Kogoro. Granted, Kazami argues that the evidence obtained is enough to bring Kogoro to trial, yet the behaviour is still uncalled for.
  • No Badass to His Valet: Downplayed as Kazami still highly respects his superior, but Zero does show him his softer side, such as his online gaming habit and pet dog.

    SPOILER CHARACTER
Hiromitsu Morofushi. See here for more information on him.
