Tōru Amuro is introduced as a PrivateDetective who first appeared posing as a waiter while helping a client with a case. He currently works at Café Poirot, and eventually becomes Kogorō's [[TheApprentice apprentice]]. Amuro is, in fact, Bourbon of the Black Organization, a skilled reconnaissance and intelligence agent who was TheRival to Rye/Shūichi Akai in the past. Bourbon is shown to be one of the few operatives [[TheFriendNobodyLikes Vermouth]] is willing to work with. He is [[DoubleReverseQuadrupleAgent THEN]] revealed to actually be Rei Furuya, a National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning, Chiyoda Division 1 investigator having infiltrated the Black Organization and was [[AffectionateNickname referred to as]] "Zero" during his childhood.

Due to his [[BreakoutCharacter immense popularity]], Amuro is the {{Deuteragonist}} in the theatrical films [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm20TheDarkestNightmare ''The Darkest Nightmare'']], the [[CharacterTitle eponymous]] [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer ''Zero the Enforcer'']] and [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm25TheBrideOfHalloween ''The Bride of Halloween'']].
Amuro is also TheProtagonist of his own (also eponymous) SpinOff manga, [[Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime ''Zero's Tea Time'']], written and drawn by ''Literature/TheSagaOfDarrenShan'' and ''Manga/{{Arago}}'' artist Takahiro Arai and supervised by series creator Gōshō Aoyama. He is also a major character in [[Manga/DetectiveConanPoliceAcademyArcWildPoliceStory ''Wild Police Story'']].

[[ThemeNaming Mandatory naming note]]: The first part of his main alias "Tōru" is the first name of his Japanese voice actor, Creator/ToruFuruya. The latter half of his alias is "Amuro" the first name of TheHero of the original ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'' who is voiced by the aforementioned Tōru Furuya. In his real name, Rei Furuya, "Rei" is both [[InconsistentSpelling another spelling]] of the original Amuro's last name "Ray" and is the Japanese number
for more information on him."zero"(零) , his childhood nickname. Furuya is the last name of his voice actor.

Added DiffLines:

* TheAce: Amuro has proven a multitude of times that he is very skilled at numerous things. These include but are not limited to [[BadassDriver driving]], [[BareFistedMonk boxing and jujitsu]], [[TheStrategist genius tactician and planner]] and [[SupremeChef an excellent chef]].
* ActorAllusion: Creator/ToruFuruya once again brings to life another [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam attractive, determined and intelligent young man with pragmatic tendencies]]. [[ColorMotif They also both excellently drive (primarily) white vehicles]].
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Technically, Rei's first appearance in the anime was in the new opening theme song during the Kaitou Kid special in August 2012.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Cases Amuro is featured in-before TheReveal of his identity as Bourbon and after his real identity is shown-give him noticeable focus.
** Some anime filler episodes released right before the yearly NonSerialMovie are dedicated to cast members that will have plot relevance to the films. i.e., since the [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm20TheDarkestNightmare 20th movie]] focuses on the Black Organization, ''The Shadow Approaching Amuro'', an anime episode released few before its theater debut is dedicated to Tōru Amuro/Rei Furuya/"Bourbon", a member of the Public Security Bureau who's acting as TheMole in the Organization. The episode ''The Melting Cake!'' does the same for the[[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer twenty-second film]].
** The aforementioned twentieth and the twenty-second films as well as the [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm25TheBrideOfHalloween twenty-fifth]] feature Amuro as the {{Deuteragonist}}.
** ''Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime'' gives Amuro his own HeroesGoneFishing SpinOff.
* AffablyEvil: During his tenure as a villain, Bourbon was very polite and upfront with whoever he was speaking to.
* AffectionateNickname: Amuro has been called "Zero" by Hiromitsu Morofushi, Wataru Date, Jinpei Matsuda, Kenji Hagiwara and Conan, Furuya-''chan'' by Hagiwara and Zero-no-''niichan'' (Big brother Zero) by Conan.
* AgentPeacock: Amuro isn't overtly feminine but he is noticeably dainty at times and [[TheDandy always well-dressed]]. Kogorō calls him "effeminate". This in no way detracts from his genius or fighting skills.
* AgentProvocateur: As "Scar!Akai", Bourbon wanted to see if Shūichi Akai was still alive and dressed up as him to gauge the reactions of his loved ones.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: File 1011 reveals that despite having been born in Japan and having lived there his whole life, he was picked on as a child for having foreign ancestry. This continued even when he enrolled in the police academy, with one person quipping he was probably good at English. His new friend Wataru Date stood up for him, as he was in a relationship with another foreigner.
* AlmightyJanitor: In his Tōru Amuro disguise, Amuro is a humble AmateurSleuth who is lucky enough to be mentored by Kogorō Mōri and gets by as a café worker. In reality he is the KnowledgeBroker of TheSyndicate but is actually TheMole planted by the SecretPolice.
* AlwaysSecondBest: While well-trained and extremely skilled Amuro still falls behind Conan and Akai, especially in intelligence. Even [[WordOfGod Aoyama-sensei]] in an interview joked that Amuro "cannot beat" Akai.
-->'''Q:''' "So he can't defeat Akai?"
-->'''Aoyama-sensei:''' "I think Amuro is better at many things than Akai is. But he can't beat Akai. He might have a chance if it was a cooking contest, though... But if he has to match Akai, he might get nervous and fail."
* AmateurSleuth: As Tōru Amuro, he pretends to an up and coming detective who works at a café to pay his bills.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Furuya has this dynamic with his subordinate Yūya Kazami. They are not rivals but in whatever task they try together, Furuya will usually be better.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Despite being Japanese, Amuro has noticeably dark skin, lighter than, but closer to Heiji's color. File 1011 reveals that one of his parents isn't Japanese.
* AmbiguouslyAbsentParent: In keeping with his MysteriousPast, neither of Amuro's parents have currently been seen or mentioned, even in {{Flashback}}s to his childhood.
* AntagonistTitle: He is [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer Film 22's]] eponymous "Zero the Enforcer". In the film due to numerous circumstances, he and Conan are in uneasy opposition until the end of the second half.
-->'''Q:''' "How about the developments in the Conan VS Amuro clash?"
-->'''Sakurai Takeharu:''' "It was decided to depict Furuya from the PSP so I did think that he and Conan would clash. Actually, the "justice" that Conan has on him is also carried by Amuro, and the one that Amuro has is also being carried by Conan. They only differ in how they express it. I don't think neither is above the other one. If you think of it as each one taking action upon the info given to each of them, they take action in a very natural manner. I wrote it thinking that it would be good for Amuro to seem "bad". But he doesn't actually give much of such an impression. If you listen to his conversation with Kazami, you don't think of him as someone evil. He also takes action based on his beliefs. The only issue is the means employed. They are illegal and ruthless, so it's whether you can approve of them or not. I did think that Furuya, as a PSP officer, would normally do things way harsher than this.."
* AnimalMotifs: During File 897: ''The Scarlet Truth'', Akai referred to Amuro as Wolf (''ōkami''). The comparison is rather apt as wolves are intelligent predators who can camouflage themselves.
* AntiHero: At his core, Rei Furuya is a man who seeks justice and desires to keep his beloved Japan safe. To achieve this however, he is willing to do numerous things others would balk at.
* ApparentlyPowerlessPuppetmaster: While actually the head of the Public Security Bureau, Amuro disguises himself as a bright café worker.
* TheApprentice: After being impressed by his skills and accomplishments, Amuro pays Kogorō to take him under his wing and mentor him. In reality, Amuro did this to get closer to him for his own goals.
* AssassinationAttempt: His initial assignment as Bourbon from the Black Organization was to hunt down the fugitive agent Sherry and assassinate her. He believes he accomplished this in the ''Jet Black Mystery Train'' but that was actually Kaito Kid in disguise who escaped relatively unharmed.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Amuro posses a keen mind and is very observant. He claimed that he always knew that Akai was an 'FBI Dog,' which shows that he may have the observation skills to detect fellow [=NOCS=], who infiltrated the Black Organization. From his investigations, he was able to determine that Conan was the puppeteer behind Sleeping Kogorō. His observation skills also allowed him to see that Conan planned everything in Akai's Fake Death instance, including the conclusion of his sentence, stating that Conan predicted everything perfectly as it played out at Raiha Pass.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He is the head of the Chiyoda Division in the PSB and an excellent boxer who is also skilled at jujitsu. His friend Wataru Date stated he was the strongest student at the Academy.
* BadassAdorable: His cheerful disposition and cheery nature as Amuro makes him a surprising example of this.
* BadassAndChildDuo: While Conan is really 17, this is how their partnership appears as to outsiders looking on.
* BadassBoast: In his SpinOff manga, Amuro, already a TripleShifter, declares to himself that he could live 100 lives simultaneously.
-->'''Rei:''' "Forget three...I could act out a hundred different faces..."
* BadassBookworm: Amuro is a well-read man who is also a capable police officer and an undercover agent.
* BadassBiker: In Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime TIME.16: ''..that was it, right? '' and ''TIME.3'', there is a chase involving a car and a police motorcycle. During the chase, the criminal manages to get rid of the policeman by crashing into him, resulting in the policeman falling down and getting injured. Rei, who saw the incident, decides to continue the chase using his police motorcycle. Knowing that he is being chased again, the criminal bumps into a truck, which makes the boxes inside the truck fall out. One of the boxes hits Rei's head and knocks off his helmet. Fortunately, he manages to get the helmet back, while stating the road traffic law about wearing helmet while driving a motorcycle. In the end, he manages to corner the criminal at Tohto Harbor. Rei then ties the criminal at a warehouse, before contacting the police and leaving the scene secretly.
-->'''Rei:''' "Road traffic law, Article 71-4...Drivers of large motorcycles...must not ride without wearing a motorcycle helmet..."
* BadassCrew: In the police academy, Amuro was part of one, consisting of himself, his [[ChildhoodFriends ChildhoodFriend]] Hiromitsu Morofushi, the BigGuy Wataru Date, the Casanova Kenji Hagiwara and HotBlooded Jinpei Matsuda.
* BadassDriver: Amuro is a capable driver, capable of precisely swinging his car in front of another during a high speed car chase in order to stop it with a controlled collision. His friend Hagiwara taught him how to drive before the events of the series.
** In ''Anime/DetectiveConanFilm20TheDarkestNightmare'', a Black Organization spy, code-name Curaçao, infiltrates the NPA Security Bureau Office, stealing the NOC list of [=MI6=], BND, CSIS, FBI and CIA agents working undercover in the Black Organization. Yūya Kazami, an officer of the Public Security Bureau, catches her red handed and Curaçao is forced to run away. She gets into Amuro's Mazda RX-7 with him driving and her in the passenger seat. As Amuro drifts with his sports car, Midori notices a boy on the street and panics. Amuro takes him into the car while not stopping then takes him out of the car. As they see the office building, they find out the road ahead is submerged. Midori weeps and thanks Amuro for going to the trouble. She wants to show Eri her gratitude towards her. Amuro then instructs her [[TitleDrop to not bite her tongue]]. He continues to drive, but this time, on the road walls which shocked Midori even more.
* BadassInANiceSuit: As a PSB investigator, Furuya dressed in a well-fitting two piece suit, accentuating his coolness.
* BandOfBrothers: Amuro had this dynamic with his core classmates from the police academy. They were as close as family and relied upon each other often.
* BareFistedMonk: Amuro has shown great capabilities as a boxer and learned jujitsu at the police academy like every other Tokyo cop.
* BattleOfWits: Amuro has engaged in this sort of battle with numerous opponents but there are two standout occasions.
** In the ''Jet Black Mystery Train'' , Amuro [[TheReveal reveals]] that he is in fact Bourbon and attempts to murder Shiho Miyano. Bourbon and Vermouth lost because he did not and could not factor that Kaito Kid disguised himself as Shiho and escaped the explosion and the fact that the real Shiho [[FountainOfYouth was shrunk into a child]].
** In ''The Scarlet Return'', Bourbon completely figured out Conan, Akai and Kir's FakingTheDead plot and confronted Subaru Okiya at the Kudō Mansion. He even discovered Subaru's true identity before Akai outed him as a PSB officer. Furuya lost because Akai was in a car with Jodie and Camel while Subsru was Yusaku in disguise.
* BeneathTheMask: While Amuro is cheerful and friendly, Furuya is a driven and saddened man who will do anything to protect his precious Japan.
* BenevolentBoss: Amuro is very lenient towards his various subordinates especially Yūya Kazami. In [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer ''Zero the Enforcer"]] when Kazami fails to realize Conan put a bug on him, Furuya destroys the listening device and quickly forgives him.
* BerserkButton: Amuro hates Shūichi Akai with a passion for being involved with the death of his best friend. His name and even the color red sets him off. In Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime Time.11 ''Putting Aside Rank'', Furuya is at a bar with Kazami. When Kazami orders a Whiskey Soda with Rye (Akai's Black Organization CodeName) Whiskey as its base, Furuya gives him a DeathGlare. Spooked, Kazami immediately changes the Rye for Bourbon (Furuya's Black Organization CodeName).
* BewareTheNiceOnes: As Amuro he puts on a kind and friendly facade but still is a trained boxer with jujitsu knowledge.
* {{Blackmail}}: Bourbon is aware of Vermouth's secret relationship with The Boss, as noted at the end of ''The Scarlet Showdown''. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization if he is killed by her.
* BoxingBattler: Amuro is well-trained as a boxer and has used his skills to subdue many a culprit.
* ABoyAndHisX: A Man And His Dog in this case. In his SpinOff manga, Amuro forms this dynamic with a stray Hokkaido inu breed dog he adopts and christens Haro.
* BreakoutCharacter: One of the most popular characters in the series, in spite of [[IconicSequelCharacter being introduced very far into its run]]. His popularity is significant enough that he got his own SpinOff in 2018, {{Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime}}.
* BreakoutVillain: Bourbon was the HiddenVillain of the Bourbon Saga and once his identity was revealed to the audience he went on to be one of the franchise's most popular characters.
* BrokenAce: Amuro is talented, determined and intelligent but he is the SoleSurvivor of his BandOfBrothers and obsessed with revenge against a man he knows did not commit that crime.

-->'''Gin:''' "Bourbon, huh? He has a sharp nose, as usual."
* CastingGag: Creator/ToruFuruya protrays Rei Furuya an intelligent and handsome young man who is TheAce, a ChickMagnet, can be driven and withdrawn and has a NonHumanSidekick named Haro. In Franchise/{{Gundam}} he portrays Amuro Ray, an intelligent and handsome young man who is TheAce, a ChickMagnet, can be driven and withdrawn and has a NonHumanSidekick named Haro.
* TheCameo: Bourbon is briefly mentioned in Anime/DetectiveConanEpisodeOneTheGreatDetectiveTurnedSmall when Vodka is speaking to Gin.
* CanineCompanion: In his SpinOff Amuro adopts Haro who becomes his NonHumanSidekick.
* CelibateHero: In razor-sharp contrast to [[EveryoneMustBePaired most of the main characters in this series]], Amuro has remained mostly uninterested in romance [[ChickMagnet and the attention he gets from the opposite sex]] barring his PrecociousCrush on Elena Miyano in his youth and his small ShipTease with his Café Poirot co-worker Azusa Enomoto.
* CharacterNameAlias: Not InUniverse, but his primary alias Tōru Amuro references TheProtagonist of ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'', Amuro Ray.

* TheChase: Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano, which the CIA spy Kir heard about and informed the FBI of.
* ChasteHero: Amuro never acts upon the numerous advances he receives from women.
* TheChessmaster: Amuro has shown a propensity for creating intricate plans with numerous moving pieces for various goals. Their success rates depend on his opponents.
** In Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer, Furuya gets to really show off hos manipulation skills. After the bombing at the start of the film, Furuya framed his mentor Kogorō as the culprit. Then he hired Kyoko Tachibana to represent him, before releasing Kogorō once the bombing was no longer deemed an accident. He admits to Conan that he specifically framed Kogorō so he could have Conan as his "collaborator".
* ChessmasterSidekick: Amuro plays this part to Kogorō, pretending to be a cheerful young man following his footsteps when in reality Amuro is ([[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass usually]]) more intelligent than Kogorō. Amuro is not as flashy in showing his true deduction skills, instead of leading Kogorō with hints to reach conclusions.
* ChickMagnet: Numerous female characters including Azusa, Sonoko Suzuki, Ayumi Yoshida and numerous others have expressed an attraction towards Amuro.
* ChildhoodFriends: Hiromitsu Morofushi and Rei Furuya were friends since childhood. Rei helped him overcome the suffering of Aphasia due to his parents' deaths. He also taught Rei some cooking skills.
* ClassifiedInformation: As a member of the Black Organization and the PSB, Amuro is perfectly fine with leaving his allies LockedOutOfTheLoop. (To be fair, they do it to him too). For instance he hid the fact that he was a PSB investigator and who Rum's SecretIdentity was.
* CloakAndDagger: As a PSB investigator, Rei conducts various missions which are depicted as both exciting and dangerous.
* CodeName: As a member of the Black Organization, he goes under the codename "Bourbon", a straight whiskey distilled from a mash having at least 51 percent corn in addition to malt and rye.
* ConservationOfCompetence: {{Downplayed}}. Furuya's PSB subordinates are far from incompetent but they do not seem as effortlessly skilled as Furuya is.
* ConsummateLiar: Amuro is a terrific liar, being able to trick multiple people about numerous things without effort.
* CoolCar: Rei Furuya drives a white colored Mazda FD RX-7. His RX-7 is a reference to the white Gundam that the Anime/MobileSuitGundam character Amuro Ray piloted, the RX-78-2. His license plate number is 新宿 330, と 73-10.
* CowboyCop: Amuro mostly follows the law, but will be lax towards rules in extreme situations.
* CoverIdentityAnomaly: It is has been unrevealed how the Black Organization does not know about Amuro's police past.
* CreatorsFavorite: While his creator Aoyama-sensei sees all of Amuro's "faces" as the same man, his seiyuu Creator/ToruFuruya admitted in an interview he likes "Rei Furuya" the best.
-->'''Q:''' "Which of Amuro's triple faces do you specially like?"
-->'''Tōru Furuya:''' "My favorite one is that one which bets his life in protecting the nation of Japan, the face of Furuya Rei. He's a hero of justice. He has a lot of actions to show his skills, and he's got a lot of cool lines. I've been working as an anime voice actor because I wanted to become a hero. With Furuya's role, I can fully enjoy that. But when he has to deal with Akai, he suddenly turns child-like. There's also what happened with Scotch, and his emotions jump forward. That also can be called a charm of him, but..."
* CuteBookworm: Amuro is an adorable waiter who is well-read on numerous subjects.
* TheDandy: Amuro possess a notable UnlimitedWardrobe and is very fashionable. He is also very well-groomed and takes care of his appearance. Kogorō has even called him "effeminate".
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As a child, Amuro was bullied by other children for being biracial. When he grew up, he failed to prevent his childhood best friend from committing suicide and every member of his BandOfBrothers died, leaving him behind.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Like [[ColorMotif]] other members of the Black Organization, Bourbon is usually donned in all black. However, he is TheMole so it is just for appearances.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Not believing the rumors that Shūichi Akai was dead, Bourbon disguised himself as Scar!Akai with Vermouth's help to gauge the reactions pf his acquaintances.
* DeceptiveDisciple: Because Amuro is lying to his mentor Kogorō about essentially everything about him, this makes him an example of this trope.
* DeepCoverAgent: Furuya has managed to worm his way into the Black Organization as a reconnaissance and deduction operative. He has shown a willingness to go to extremes to secure his position.
* DelinquentHair: As a child, other children thought Amuro dyed his hair when in actuality it is natural.
* DemolitionsExpert: In the [[NonSerialMovie non-canon]] movie [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm20TheDarkestNightmare The Darkest Nightmare]], Amuro was able to defuse a bomb when he remembered Jinpei Matsuda who taught him that. In the [[Manga/DetectiveConanPoliceAcademyArcWildPoliceStory Wild Police Story manga]] he was able to defuse a bomb with Matsuda's help.
* DoubleReverseQuadrupleAgent: Amuro is introduced as a friendly PrivateDetective who worked at a café to pay the bills. We later learn that he was secretly Bourbon the entire time. After that, it is revealed that his true name is Rei Furuya and he is TheMole from the PSB.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Not normally but in the climax of Anime/DetectiveConanFilm22ZeroTheEnforcer Furuya drives like a madman, complete with a SlasherSmile due to being in a RaceAgainstTheClock.
* DumbBlonde: {{Inverted}}. Amuro has naturally blonde hair and is one of the series's best sleuths and foremost geniuses.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Whenever he shows up, Amuro automatically becomes the second-most important character excluding the period of time the audience knew he was Bourbon before they learned he was a cop.
* DueToTheDead: In the conclusion of ''The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love'', Amuro visits his friend Wataru Date's grave and leaves behind a toothpick, which Date always chewed on like his father. He also deletes from his cellphone the last message that Date had sent him.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the anime, Amuro's first appearance was during the new opening theme song in 2012.
* EliteAgentsAboveTheLaw: The PSB are SecretPolice who are beholden to the same rules as other cops and this fact occasionally causes strife.
* EncyclopaedicKnowledge: Like most competent detectives in this series, Amuro has a wealth of knowledge on numerous subjects and topics.
* EnemyMine: When he broke into the Kudō Mansion, Amuro was initially greeted with a pistol to the head but he was then invited for tea and joined forced with Akai and Conan to defeat the Black Organization.
* EurekaMoment: Just like other detectives in this series, Amuro thinks or says "I see. So that's how it was...!" upon cracking a case.
* ExpressiveMask: In his Scar!Akai mask he was a splitting image of the real deal but he did not speak as he could not imitate voices.
* ExtremeDoormat: As Amuro, Furuya is rather passive as to not attract attention, though he will stand up for others if need be. In his introduction ''Wedding Eve'' he shrugs off the abuse of his client's jealous husband.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: In Manga/DetectiveConanPoliceAcademyArcWildPoliceStory when Wataru Date stands up for Furuya to bullies because he is dating a foreigner, Hagiwara asks him if he "likes Furuya-chan" and reassures him that he is okay with it.
* EveryoneLovesBlondes: A RareMaleExample. Amuro's golden blonde hair highlight his already good looks and make him popular with women InUniverse and out.
* EvilDuo: Bourbon has this dynamic with in the Black Organization with fellow reconnaissance operative Vermouth.
* FakeRelationship: {{Downplayed}} but when Vermouth disguised herself as Azusa, she was more affectionate towards Amuro than the real person is.
* FanServiceWithASmile: A GenderInverted example. Many women come to Poirot simply to be served by Amuro.
* AFatherToHisMen: Amuro is very compassionate towards his subordinates and always leads by example.
* FireForgedFriends: Amuro has this dynamic with his police academy friends especially Jinpei Matsuda. The story begins with the two of them engaged in a fist fight but by the end they are as close as brothers.
* FrameUp: The film's IncitingIncident a restaurant bombing, is pinned on Kogorō Mōri. This was revealed to have been done by Rei Furuya for many reasons.
* FriendOnTheForce: As a PSB investigator, Rei is one himself, but he has in own in the form of Hyōe Kuroda currently the Tokyo Police First Division Managing Officer, former an officer from the National Police Agency.
* TheFriendsWhoNeverHang: The way Detective Conan is structured means that Conan is the only consistent character and the supporting cast changes case after case. Over time this means that characters in certain groups have never had even a conversation with other characters in different groups.
* FrontlineGeneral: Despite his genius Furuya leads his PSB subordinates into conflicts as seen in the ''The Scarlet Return'' arc.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: In File 1081: ''Inheritor of the Will'' Sato questions Furuya if they met prior. We saw that they did when college adged Sato checked out Instructor Onizuka's RX-7, but Furuya remains elusive.
-->'''Sato:''' "We really did meet before right?"
-->'''Furuya:''' "Yes, perhaps...I don't remember anything though..."
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Amuro's status as Scar!Akai was hinted at ahead of time.
** In Scar Akai's appearance at the Beika Dept. Store, Rei was the only known Black Organization operative not seen at the same time as Scar Akai. Gin began discussing Bourbon with Kir after seeing this Scar Akai.
** Rei was absent from his job at the Poirot when Scar Akai appeared outside the detective agency where Masumi was walking with Ran. This is also notable because this occurred right after Masumi and Rei met and Rei found out Masumi was friends with Ran.
** In Scar Akai's appearances at the Teito Bank case, the Beika Dept Store, and outside Mōri Detective Agency, he never spoke in front of anyone who would know Shūichi's real voice, suggesting that this Scar Akai could not [[VoiceChangeling imitate voices]] like Vermouth and Kaito Kid.
** Rei is right-handed like Scar Akai.
** He has the right body size, face shape, and height to disguise as Scar Akai.
** He has an interest in the Mōri Detective Agency which makes sense because Scar Akai saw fit to keep Kogorō's cellphone number with him.
* His status as Bourbon was also well-hinted at.
** He is a detective and very skilled at information gathering as Kir described.
** He is male as the codename Bourbon implies. The Black Organization [[ThemeNaming codename pattern]] is that hard liquors are used for men's codenames, and Kir used a male specific pronoun to refer to Bourbon in the ''Department Store Bomber Case''.
** When Rei offers Kogorō an unknown "tuition" per case Kogorō brings him on, the amount he offers is enough to get Kogorō excited and accepts Rei as an apprentice without hesitation. This is strange because Rei would not be expected to have much money because he is young, lacks a formal agency, and works part-time at restaurants in one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.
** Unlike other detectives so far, Rei is a calculating type who chose avoidable courses of action (or non-action) that may have resulted in harm to others if things had gone slightly differently. In his introductory case, Rei doesn't intervene when a suspect he knows to be innocent is half a step from destroying his exonerating evidence because it seems Rei was testing Kogorō. Later, Rei noticed that Conan was alone with a murderer and considered that Conan might have been kidnapped, yet said nothing about it until others realized Conan and the murder suspect were gone.
** The timing of Bourbon's report to Vermouth about Shiho's appearance at Gunma suggested Rei was Bourbon. The other two [[RedHerring Bourbon suspects]], Subaru and Masumi, both had seen Haibara and were suspicious of her long before Bourbon reported Shiho to Vermouth, but the video from Gunma was the first time Rei had seen an image of Shiho or Haibara. Subaru had met Haibara in person in his first appearance case and multiple times afterward. Masumi had obtained a picture of Haibara via a reflection from Agasa's glasses in the Ayumi kidnapping case. Both of them should have reported to Vermouth if they were Bourbon soon after their respective encounters.
** He completely cut off communication with his close friend Wataru Date. A complete cutoff would not be necessary if Rei worked for a non-secret organization like the Tokyo Metropolitan Police District. It is more sensible that Rei was trying to protect Date from any potential dangers associated with infiltrating the Black Organization as a member of the National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division.
** Rei kept a bug detector with him - only Organization members have been shown to do this, while normal detectives like Conan do not.
** In File 793-''Private Eye'' the first case in which Rei appears in, the detective Sanji Haruoka orders the waiter (Rei himself) to bring him the Bourbon with ice.
** Amuro is the most likely suspect of the three (Subaru, Masumi, Amuro) to be Bourbon via the process of elimination. Subaru Okiya is not Bourbon, as Conan, who is normally a very careful person, invites him to stay as his Shinichi's home. If Subaru was someone that Conan did not know, it would be very unlikely that Conan would let him live in the Kudo's house and near Haibara (Sherry). Masumi Sera who looks like Shūichi Akai is most likely a relative of the FBI agent and thus not an enemy. She also knew Conan was Shin'ichi, and thus must have deduced that shrinking was possible. Despite knowing this, Haibara was not threatened until her adult form was captured on video before the mystery train case.
** Of the three major suspects, only Amuro isn't particularly interested in Conan at first. Instead, he kisses up to Kogorō. There was no reason for a member of the Black Organization to care about Conan since all the blame for Conan's prior meddling has fallen on Sherry, Kogorō, the FBI, or an unknown person. The other two suspects, Subaru and Masumi, either was interested in or knew Conan's true identity from the outset.
** In the ''Jet Black Mystery Train'', before TheReveal, when smoke had began being emitted, he opened a door, and claimed that he saw fire when he knew there was no fire at all.
** It should probably be mentioned that the fact Rei found out about Conan's intelligence levels and observational skills, as well as his clear detective mastery, but yet was unable to connect him to Yusako Kudō at all as possibly being Shin'ichi, implies that the side effect of APTX 4869 is not well known, and possibly is only known about by Vermouth and Sherry at the moment, with the possible exception of the boss. This theory is supported by the fact Vermouth wants Sherry dead to some unknown level, as it eliminates more evidence of the drug's side effect, making this theory highly likely. Even before the Bourbon Reveal, he began realizing how intelligent Conan was, and probably that he was more intelligent and observant than Kogorō, however his focused remained on Kogorō, until Conan was hit with a tennis racket, and he began really watching and observing Conan.
** The reason this connects back to Bourbon's identity as well is that he never suspected Haibara of being Sherry, which if he had known the side effect, he should have, which would have drawn his concern during the ''Sweet and Cold Delivery Service'' case when he realized Haibara was alive.
* The final reveal of his true identity was completely well-thought through as well.
** Tōru attended the police academy and was close friends with police officer Wataru Date. Amuro cut off contact with Date to protect him from the Black Organization's investigation while infiltrating. Tōru later paid his respects at the grave of detective Wataru Date
** Tōru reacted negatively to the presence of the FBI investigating illegally in Japan. He told them to "get out of his Japan" because they were infringing on his and the PSB's jurisdiction.
** Tōru was able to amass several assistants to help him capture the person he thought was Shūichi Akai despite not having the backing of the Black Organization with his plan. The assistants were members of the National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division.

[[TranquilFury Incensed]], Vermouth points a gun to his head and threatens to murder him. Bourbon calmly reminds her that should he be compromised, her secret would be exposed, which calms her down.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: On the surface, he has this dynamic with Akai. Noble Male Amuro has blonde hair and pretends to be cheerful when he is really professional and focused. -->'''Tōru Furuya:''' "In the case of Amuro Tōru, working at the Poirot part-time, I take into account the image that he behaves like a kind guy and is an attractive young man. Conan knows his identity, but when there are other Detective Boys present, he acts as if he was but a strong and young detective. That's how I voice him like. I use a bit of a higher tone of voice, with a soft feeling. In the case of Furuya Rei, he's a worker and a pro so I voice him in a sharp and edgy manner. To give out a dark feeling I make a lower tone of voice. There also times in which he gives out orders to Kazami, so there are parts in which he turns stricter. I add changes in scenes like those.
Speaking of voice tones, I use the lowest one when I voice him as Bourbon. Vermouth and he have a grip of each others' weaknesses so it's a bit special yet when he talks to Gin or similar scenes I use a very low tone. Also, when it comes to Akai Shūichi, he's got a feud with him involving what happened with Scotch so he clearly hates him. His emotions get the best of him. When he faced Akai, he behaves like a kid. So when Akai is around he unusually brings out his emotions in a straightforward way. When reading the movie's script, when he moves around as Furuya Rei, and when he talks to Conan... I thought that it would be better to use Amuro's voice for those scenes. When I had to act scenes as Furuya Rei, I wrote the "Kou" kanji from "kouan (Public Security)" on my copy of the script and when it was Amuro Tooru I wrote "an". So they overlapped with "kouan" and was hard to understand even for me, so I wrote the katakana"
* SecretKeeper: Furuya is aware of both Conan and Vermouth's secrets, yet he has not told anyone else yet.
* SecretSecretKeeper: Conan has no idea that Amuro has figured out who he really is but Amuro has not filled him in yet.
* SecretPolice: The '''Security Bureau of the National Police Agency (NPA SB)'''(警察庁警備局 ''Keisatsu-chō Keibi-kyoku'') is a bureau of the NPA in charge of national-level public security. It is charged with counterterrorism, counterintelligence, countering cybercrime and surveillance of potentially threatening groups, organizations, and social phenomena. It also supervises the prefectural police forces for those issues. The undercover agent Rei Furuya is a member of one of the departments of the NPA SB called the '''National Police Agency Security Bureau Security Planning Division'''(警察庁警備局警備企画課 ''Keisatsuchō Keibi-kyoku Keibi-Kikaku-ka'') which has the nickname '''Zero'''.

** Bourbon is an alcoholic beverage. Like other male members of the Blacks Organization, it is a hard liquor.
** His names Tōru Amuro and Rei Furuya are a ShoutOut to Anime/MobileSuitGundam.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: During his time in the Organization, at some point Rei became TheRival of Shūichi Akai (alias Dai
Moroboshi). Rei considered Shūichi as his WorthyOpponent, wanted to compare his capabilities with the latter, and thinks that he is the only one capable of defeating Shūichi.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to Aoyama-sensei in an interview, he likes celery.
-->'''Aoyama-sensei:''' "Ah. But he doesn't dislike Conan, though. What he dislikes is Akai and what he likes is celery (laughs)."
* TragicKeepsake: After he joined the SecretPolice, Furuya cut off contract with all his loved ones for their safety. Specifically, Wataru Date sent him a text asking him what was up and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. The conclusion of ''The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love'' shows Furuya visiting Date's grave and deleted said text message.
* TripleShifter: As the narration in Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime succinctly puts it:
-->'''Narration:'''Amuro Tōru: A man with three faces-Furuya Rei (PSB), Amuro Tōru (detective), Bourbon (Black Organization). To protect Japan as a member of the PSB, he normally works at Cafe Poirot while apprenticing to Kogorō as a "detective-in-training". On the other side of things, he's also infiltrating the Black Organization, investagting the dark side of society.
* TranquilFury: When he does become angry this is usually how Amuro chooses to express said anger.
* TwoAliasesOneCharacter: Five in these cases. He has been known as "Scar!Akai", "Tōru Amuro", "Bourbon", "Zero" and "Rei Furuya".
* UndercoverCopReveal: Akai reveals that Bourbon is a fellow mole on orders from the PSB.

* UnlimitedWardrobe: Amuro seemingly wears a new outfit every time he appears something even noted as WordOfGod.
-->'''Q:''' "Why is it that the characters' clothing is so fashionable?"
-->'''Aoyama-sensei:''' "I used to buy a lot of clothes at Anan or Non-no or [=CanCam=] (laughs). Amuro often appears in the latest cases, so they asked me to think up Amuro's clothing (laughs). I have them think of making files about the clothes in every case."
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Unfortunately, it was his steps that spooked a distraught Scotch, who had his identity exposed, into going through with his suicide to protect his loved ones.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: :In order to further infiltrate the Organization's inner circle, he planned to run over an elementary school teacher and hand over Shūichi Akai to them. Akai calls him out on this, reminding him not to forget their true targets.

* WhatTheHellHero: After learning about what he planned to do to Natsuko Shibuya, Akai tells him to not lose focus on their goal.

* AWolfInSheepsClothing: While a noble man, Amuro hides a deep ruthless streak in pursuing his goals.
* VillainRespect: While Gin is annoyed by Bourbon, he flat out calls him a genius when he is talking to Kir.
-->'''Gin:''' "Heh, Always doing as he pleases... that bastard irritates me as usual."
-->'''Kir:''' "Who do you mean?"
-->'''Gin:''' "Like you said, one who you wish only existed in novels. A detective like Sherlock Holmes."
* VitriolicBestBuds: Furuya has this relationship with two characters.
** He introduced fighting Matsuda and the later even loses a tooth. Almost immediately the two are peas in a pod.
** With Andre Camel it is downplayed on the "best buds". Amuro refers to Camel as "German" and in Manga/DetectiveConanZerosTeaTime, the two compete with physical exercises. Afterwards, Amuro served Camel water.
* YouKilledMyFather: Amuro's animosity towards Akai comes from what he believes is the former's failure to save his best friend.
