Revisiting the Roots. note

"We’re just like sharks. We pick up the scent of blood, proceed to the scene of the crime…and use every sense we have to draw out the culprit. And once they’ve taken the bait…we sink our razor-sharp teeth known as “evidence” into them until they’ve given up. That’s just what a detective does."
Shin’ichi Kudō

Detective Conan: Episode "One": The Great Detective Turned Small is the sixth TV Special of Detective Conan. It was directed by Yamamoto Yasuichiro, written by Yamamoto Yasuichiro and Hiroshi Kashiwabara, produced by Michihiko Suwa and Yoshihito Yonekura and scored by Katsuo Ono. It was released on December 9, 2016.

The special is a retelling of the first and part of the second episode of the series. It is a commemorative work for the 20th anniversary of the Detective Conan anime.

Episode "One": The Great Detective Turned Small provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: This TV is a huge expansion of the first and (part of) the second episode of the anime, both showing the events that led to Shin’ichi witnessing Gin and Vodka at Tropical Land as well as a lot of future events.
  • Foreshadowing: Ran tells Shin’ichi to not rush into things, as being a detective can be a dangerous job and he might get into trouble. After Shin’ichi is turned into Conan, he remembers her words.
Ran: If you keep conceitedly poking your nose into cases…one of these days, you’ll find yourself in real danger.
  • Irony: An obviously joking Vodka, a career criminal tells the CEO he is doing business with to stop doing bad things. The CEO immediately points out the irony.
Vodka: You shouldn’t be doin’ bad things.
  • The Power of Hate: Played for Laughs. After Shin’ichi has to leave Ran’s karate match to solve a case, a furious Ran finds the strength to defeat Hina Wada, who previously had the upper hand.
  • Setting Update: The beginning of Detective Conan took place in 1994 (Manga) or 1996 (Anime). 20 years later the story clearly takes place in 2016, with the much updated technology.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: While an expert soccer player, Shin’ichi is definitely the brains while karateka Ran is the brawn. This is best illustrated when Ran pushes Shin’ichi out of way to stop Takanori Sewa’s out of control motorized wheelchair and catch a vase.
  • Would Hurt a Child: After Gin incapacitates Shin’ichi, Vodka attempts to shoot the latter with his gun. Gin stops him, not out of any kindness, but because the cops loitering around would definitely hear a gunshot.
