A world-renowned karate champion from Haido High School who becomes Sonoko's long-distance boyfriend. His family runs an inn
and a beach restaurant named Ocean House: Nagisa (海の家なぎさ) back in his hometown of Izu, Shizuoka and would go back to help during the summertime when tourism there is at its peak season.
- The Ace: Holds the record of being undefeated in 400 karate matches around the world. And just to put this out there, he even knows how to play tennis.
- Always Save the Girl: Protecting Sonoko is always his main priority.
- Art Evolution: In contrast to his earlier appearance, Makoto's tan has become lighter.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Makoto may not be an Amateur Sleuth, but he proves to have an astute and keen mind. The best example came from being able to identify Kaitou Kid disguised as Sonoko because of a difference in finger lengths. This turns out to be a habit of analyzing his opponents physical features with a glance.
- In The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Kaito Kid and Conan had to distance themselves from Makoto throughout their trip in Singapore due to the two disguising in other identities through the trip and knowing Matoko would spot them out if he “pays attention towards them for too long”.
- Badass Back: Makoto pulls this on a regular basis with lots of sass. If you are stupid enough to provoke him while his back is facing you, don't ever come to us and say we haven't warned you beforehand.
- Battle Aura: Makoto earned it since 2019’s movie, The Fist of Blue Sapphire.
- Beware the Nice Ones: A noble young man who can give one hell of a punch.
- Beware the Quiet Ones: One of the most vocally reserved people who can also topple a column with minimum effort.
- Big Brother Instinct: He has a younger sister in his family. Therefore it comes natural to him to protect, nurture, and lend a helping hand to those who are younger, and or weaker than him.
- Big Damn Heroes: Makoto does this so well, Dramatic Wind are more than willing to play in his favor.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has thick, black, square-ish eyebrows.
- Bridal Carry: Makoto finally gave Sonoko one in episode 855, to take her back to her home so that she can be treated for her cold; leaving Ran all envious with a closet Squee
- Charles Atlas Superpower: Through nothing but a harsh, disciplined training in karate that has dominated most of his life, Makoto Kyogoku is capable of detecting where danger is, defeating armies of armed criminals, dodge bullets, catch bullets fired around him within face range, and destroying building properties to his advantage.
- Viewers lampshaded how Makoto is getting increasingly super human as time goes by. Or as most people put it: "Makoto has officially graduated from The Normal Class, and ascended into Superheroism."
- Chick Magnet: It's implied in-universe that Makoto holds a lot of fangirls due to him being an aloof badass martial arts celeb.
- Clear My Name: He somehow ends up being the unlucky guy labeled as "Suspect of the Week" twice out of his last 4 appearances as of April 2017 (counting non-verbal appearance). But have no fear, his girlfriend will either be there to lash the heck out of the investigators, or being used by Conan to clear him.
- But come to think of it, he has been the "Suspect of the Week" since he debuted. How unfortunate.
- The situation was Double subverted in the case of episode 855. Makoto sensed a few little kohais have stolen something important from one of his karate masters, and went onto the scene to stage himself as a suspect. But Conan (using Sonoko as his exposition) just cleared him out anyway.
- Club President: Makoto is the captain of his karate team.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Downplayed. We don't to see it to great extent since he only appears from time to time, but we can tell from his first appearance that he does not like any guy hitting on Sonoko.
- Makoto’s voice actor, Nobuyuki Hiyama noted in an interview on how he discussed with Kappei Yamaguchi (Shinichi Kudo & Kaito Kid’s actor) over the relationship between Makoto and Kaito Kid, and both concluded that (as per current character development) Makoto, for certain, has a one-sided jealously towards Kaito Kid over the notion of Sonoko being a blatant Fangirl of Kaito, and outright calling Kaito “Kaito Kid-sama. ”
- Deadpan Snarker: A big part of Makoto’s Establishing Character Moment was his snarky attitude towards The Suspect of the Week who was hitting on Sonoko, and towards Sonoko for her skimpy fashion and flirty attitude. Makoto later revealed he pulls that attitude mainly out of vigilance, and protective instinct respectively.
- Establishing Character Moment: Makoto’s first act has him impolitely serving beer with a snarky attitude towards a fellow Suspect of the Week who was hitting on Sonoko.
Makoto: “Sir, please put off your cigarette, it’ll be a pain to clean up after you.”
- The Fashionista: Makoto is a surprisingly good dresser for a Lovable Jock.
- Genius Bruiser: Makoto is shown to have an astute mind due to his extensive training, being able to identify Kaitou Kid disguised as Sonoko because of a difference in finger lengths. This is possible because he can take full dimensions of a person he meets in moments. It is a habit of analyzing his opponents physical features with a glance.
- Genre Refugee: The reason why Makoto is constantly traveling outside of Japan, and Sonoko has to painfully endure a Long-Distance Relationship is because the dude who created him made him way too physically powerful of a character for a Detective Drama, and has to limit his appearance count. According to Aoyama (and also lampshaded by Makoto’s very own voice actor), if Makoto is placed in the story too often, he
can literally transform the genre of this series. See World's Strongest Man for further explanation. - Gentle Giant: Makoto is a dorky sweet guy and is one of the tallest characters in the series.
- The Glasses Come Off: When he's about to kick major ass, expect him to show up with contacts; or if his opponents are stupid enough to take out his glasses as a taunt, expect said oppponent to have a massive Oh, Crap! moment.
- The Glasses Gotta Go: A rare played-straight and subverted example with a borderline Clark Kenting effect. Makoto is established as a character who is well recognized in-universe with his glasses off, but only those who know him privately are aware that he wears glasses on an everyday basis; Makoto is not hiding his identity by any stretch, but him sporting glasses somehow always leads to people, such as Ran who's pretty much a softcore fangirl of his, being shocked to realize he wears glasses. For manga readers and anime viewers, we were introduced with Makoto with his glasses on, and were all pleasantly surprised with his glasses off moment, BUT, since Makoto is NOT The Protagonist of this series, the viewers/readers' point-of-view are bound not to be on Makoto's "celebrity (aka. ass-kicking) life," but on his "private life;" which means the audience watching/reading this series will see him in glasses more than his glasses off moments, and further achieved the "Hunk with a cute twist" character effect.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Makoto has a scar on his left brow in which he uses his Pointless Band-Aid to conceal it. As far as the plot goes, he hasn't disclose how he got it as of yet.
- Hunk: He's a tall, muscular, and handsome Chick Magnet who has old-school ideals of masculinity.
- I Will Wait for You: One of the silly flaws that comes with this personality of his. If Sonoko sets up a date time with Makoto and he had promised to make it, he will be on location earlier than Sonoko in order to greet her even if his schedule bumps him a few days earlier than expected. To make things worse, Makoto doesn't like to call Sonoko up if she might be running late, since he believes that gesture will make him seem desperate and uncourtly. So he ends up either setting a tent to sleep in near the spot, or stand in the rain for hours just to wait for her.
- In Touch with His Feminine Side: A moderate Type 1 on the emotional side. Makoto mentioned that his sister got him hooked onto a TV drama series ever since she asked him to help her record the shows for her.
- Lady and Knight: The Knight to Sonoko's Lady, though they are an informal example; she is a Genki Girl Ojou with very bad luck, whereas Makoto is a karate champion with downright Super-Strength, and he has protected his "Bright Lady" just like a "White Knight" would several times.
- Lightning Bruiser: Makoto is inhumanly strong and incredibly fast. And he has insane pain tolerance, as getting a knife stuck in his upper arm does nothing to him.
- Long-Distance Relationship: With Sonoko. This is mostly due to him being a world-ranked karate practitioner and always travelling. The couple is also enrolled in different schools, not to mention from the school that rivals Sonoko's best friend in karate.
- Lovable Jock: A karate team ace who's nice, polite, and loyal to his friends.
- Love at First Sight: Makoto actually saw Sonoko for the first time when she was cheering for Ran in their district's seasonal high school karate tournament, and since then he had a crush on her. The Episode One special confirms by showing him on that fateful tournament where Ran won first place in the girl's tournament, which led her and Shinichi to celebrate through a trip to the amusement park—Tropical Land together.
- Made of Iron: Seems to have an uncanny resistance to pain. Come on, he gets a knife stuck in his left arm and just says he's okay!
- Meaningful Name: Makoto's surname was based on Japanese novelist, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, while the last two kanjis of his entire name (-goku Makoto) is an Alternate Character Reading of Kyokushin—a major karate school in Japan; and has been lampshaded in-universe.
- Megaton Punch: Makoto officially becomes the One-Punch Man of the Conan universe; sending groups of thugs out to Marina Bay in one blow.
- Mistaken for Murderer: Unfortunately, Makoto is usually seen being suspected for murder whenever he appears. His first appearance has Conan, Ran, and Sonoko suspect him of being the one who tried to kill Sonoko.
- Nerves of Steel: As a master martial artist, Makoto is usually cool and collected, especially in crisis situations.
- Nice Guy: He can be awkward, but he's also brave, honest, polite, selfless, and deeply loves Sonoko.
- Oblivious to Love: He's horribly not good with people, so he seems to have a hard time picking up on her "subtle" hints—in the Valentine's Day episode where she went to a resort with Kogoro's family to make a chocolate heart for (as she told Makoto) "the person she cared for most," Makoto showed up to see who this person was and if he was a suitable companion for her. This turned out to be a good thing, as he arrived just in time to help KO two murderers who got the drop on everyone else. When he asked who it was and Sonoko pointed at him, he turned around to look behind him.
- Official Couple: With Sonoko Suzuki.
- Old-School Chivalry: Makoto holds a fairly old-school manly mindset. He possesses a high level of chivalry, doesn't allow himself to ask for women's help in anything, and disapproves Sonoko for wearing clothes that show more than 10% of her skin. note
- One-Man Army: He can take out full groups of guards with guns ready to fire at point-blank range.
- Opaque Lenses: His initial appearance has him wearing his glasses like this so that the viewers won't be sure as to whether Makoto's an ally to the main cast or not. Even Ran, who felt she had seen him before, had a hard time recognizing him as the karate celebrity that she knew; but that's mainly because that was the first time she's seen him with his glasses on.
- Opposites Attract: Makoto (a mellow, Oblivious to Love, old-school kind of guy) is officially paired with Sonoko (an excitable, lovey-dovey, modern gal).
- Pointless Band-Aid: On the outer tip of his left brow. In The Fist of Blue Sapphire, his bandage strip is revealed to be a Good Luck Charm with a sticker photo of Sonoko and himself attached inside of it.
- Power Limiter: In the last third of The Fist of Blue Sapphire, one of the case culprits tied Makoto’s right wrist with a charm bracelet weaved with hefty Razor Floss, in which Makoto instantly knew he would not be able to perform to the best of his abilities unless he can find a way to break from it. Conan and Kaito Kid managed to unleash him from that bracelet to give the criminals their match-setting Counter-Attack by the finale.
- Red Baron:
- "The Prince of Kicks", according to Ran.
- "The Haughty Saint of Martial Arts" by various tournaments.
- "The World's Strongest Weapon of Defense in Human Form" by the rest of the characters.
- Rescue Romance: His relationship with Sonoko began when he saved her from being killed by the Villain Of The Week, and at other times, he would come to her rescue at the perfect moment.
- Running Gag: His tendency to be the nearest person to the Victim of the Week has led to many a detective to suspect him.
- Samurai: He's obviously not a samurai, but matches several of the stereotypes — Tall, Dark, and Handsome, extremely stern and proud (when he's not being a huge dork), and a lot of chivalry. Sonoko even compares him to being more of a samurai than a prince.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Savvy Guy (kinda more oblivious than the average "savvy guy") to Sonoko's Energetic Girl (an easily emotional Genki Girl).
- Scary Shiny Glasses: If anyone flirts with Sonoko without his consent, and or when he is prepared to unleash his powers, his glasses will certainly let out a grave warning.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Makoto has only ever shown a romantic interest in Sonoko. Granted he's a chivalric man who Sonoko herself voluntarily signs up with. Which means Makoto vows to be absolutely devoted to Sonoko, but in return, Sonoko has to comply to his requirements in being a modest woman.
- Skilled, but Naive: An extremely talented karate expert, yet somewhat naive in social interactions. Nobuyuki Hiyama confirmed this very trope is what gives Makoto his humanity; indicating Makoto is weaker in mentality compared to his impeccable physical strength and skill.
Hiyama: “Kyogoku’s very pure. As much as I’m certain he wouldn’t lose over any straightforward (physical) combats that are placed in front of his face, I would say he can be easily deceived by con artists... In martial arts, practitioners are required to train in ‘Heart, Skill, and Strength.’ While Kyogoku’s training in ‘Skill, and Strength’ is in near completion, his mentality still has a long way to go.”
- Smart People Wear Glasses: He's been shown to have a keen eye for detail; a skill that allowed him to know that Kaitou Kid had disguised himself as Sonoko.
- Spider-Sense: Makoto somehow can detect when and where Sonoko or anyone he needs to protect might be under danger. So he will forfeit his tournament match overseas (if he has one) to book a flight straight back to Japan a few days earlier and set an ambush to save Sonoko on that spot if it does happen. He did it with success. In episode 855, his senses alarmed him that a few kids were up to no good, so he went onto the scene and made it seem like he was the one who committed the trouble.
- Stoic Spectacles: Makoto's one of those rare character examples within the anime genre representing martial artists who wear glasses on a normal basis.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He comes off as cold and aloof to those who are not familiar with him (which includes his fangirls), but once he allows people to befriend him on a personal level, he let's them in on his sugar-coated cotton candy side.
- Super-Strength: Makoto's strength is shown to become increasingly powerful with each of his appearance. Such as him throwing off a bowling ball as if it was a baseball one time, leading him to destroy a pinsetter by accident. Not long after that, in order to chase down Kaitou Kid in another incident, Makoto was shown punching down an entire museum pillar with only a few fists and kicks to send himself flying to where Kaitou is located.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Tall, dark-skinned, and extremely good-looking.
- Vigilante Man: In Makoto’s introduction episode, Makoto paid extra attention towards Sonoko’s party, and stalked them (which led to Makoto becoming a potential suspect on Conan’s list) out of suspicion of the man who was hitting on Sonoko; due to past incidents of women around that man ending up being brutally killed. This led to his successful rescue of Sonoko from the Villain of the Week.
- Violently Protective Boyfriend: His first appearance has him protecting his love interest/future girlfriend from being killed by a Serial Killer. And most of his subsequent appearances have Makoto protecting Sonoko with all his might.
- World's Strongest Man: His Charles Atlas Superpower, Super-Strength, and Red Baron names are utterly serious.
- Aoyama confirmed Makoto is the strongest character in physicality of the entire Detective Conan cast, mentioning "in a world with no superpowered characters, Makoto is the closest this (Conan) world can have;" Aoyama also refers Makoto as “The man who stumbled himself into the wrong genre.”
- In response to Aoyama’s official endorsement, real-life press refers to Makoto as “The Strongest Man of the Conan Universe.”
- Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Played with. Makoto by default is this, but he came across Masumi Sera playing a little rough (in a fun way) with Sonoko one day assuming she was a guy; and gave her a good kick in the abdomen after she took the initial move in giving him an attack (which he fend off.) Sonoko and Ran stopped him before things got out of hand. Once Makoto learned of Sera's identity, he immediately softened up and apologized to her.
- You Just Ruined the Shot: In chapter 1022, he mistook an actor for an actual criminal, knocked him out and had to replace him.
Hina Wada
A Junior year student of Haido High School, and The Ace of her school's Girl's Karate team. She was first introduced as the key witness in relation to "Chiba's UFO Case" aired in episodes 847 and 848.
- Action Girl: A skilled karate girl who's on par with Ran, but hasn't won against Ran through any matches by far.
- Ascended Extra: She originally was the unnamed opponent of Ran's school karate match, but then was given an actual role by episode 847. Makoto's backstory on how he developed his Love at First Sight towards Sonoko also provided this buff to happen for Hina.
- The Cameo: She briefly appears in the Detective Conan Episode One anime special, apprehending a thief on her own as Ran and Shinichi witnessed.
- Defeat Means Friendship: Hina became friends with Ran after their match from their first episode (Episode One special.)
- Gossipy Hens: She's not close to Makoto, so she's unaware of Ran's relationship to Sonoko and Makoto; leading to her gossiping her confusion as to how "there's some odd rich girl lingering around Makoto-sempai all the time" right in Ran's face.
- The Nicknamer: She calls Ran "Ranmaru" due to Ran's name sounding like "Mori Ranmaru," a famous samurai affiliated with Oda Nobunaga.
- Plucky Girl: Hina's a sweet, easy-going, optimistic, and fearless girl. When Kogoro Mouri asked her what she would do if she were to encounter an alien for real, her reply was that she will ask "why they have come to Earth," and "if she can ride in their UFO?" And if the aliens are bad, she will "have a heartfelt conversation with them using her fist."
- The Rival: Considers herself as one for Ran, but they're on friendly terms.
The Suzuki Clan (Sonoko's Family)
Tomoko and Shiro Suzuki
Tomoko Suzuki is voiced by Miru Hitotsuyanagi (JP), Amy Rosenthal (EN, Funimation)

Sonoko and Ayako's wealthy parents.
Dub Name Change: Selma Sebastian (Tomoko).

- Happily Married: Obviously, it's between these two.
- Long Bus Trip: Sonoko's parents are introduced during Kaito Kid's first Case Closed appearance (chapters 156-159), but have been complete no-shows until finally making a reappearance during Kaito Kid vs Makoto Kyougoku (chapters 862-864). Amazing how it's still the same voice actors after so long.
- Open Minded Parents: They are shown to have no qualms about their daughters associating with the lower class people like Ran and Ayako's entire friend group. They even allow their daughters to use their mansions or vacation homes as places for them to hang out.
- Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: "Ugly" is a bit much, but Tomoko is a knock-out compared to Shiro.

- Family Theme Naming: Tomoko shares a syllable with her older daughter Ayako and younger daughter Sonoko.
- My Beloved Smother: Tomoko can be very controlling when it comes to who she prefers for Sonoko to date.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Both Sonoko and Ayako get their physical looks from Tomoko.

- Porn Stache: Shiro has a handlebar mustache.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Compared to his wife, Shiro is a much more accepting person.
- Team Dad: Shiro tries to be this if Tomoko's actions go too far.
Jirokichi Suzuki
Sonoko's retired uncle. He spends most of his wealth and free time thinking up bizarre traps to finally catch Kaito Kid.
- Attention Whore: His introduction has him express disdain for Kaito Kid; not because he's a thief, but because he had the gall to take the front and second pages of the newspaper with his heists, which Kirokichi wanted to detail his exploits and trips from across the globe. This leads to the Glory Seeker mentioned below.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Look at the picture.
- Cool Old Guy: His first appearance has him stopping a thief who snabbed Sonoko's purse...while on a motorcycle. He also thinks of some strange, but brilliant and intricate methods to catch Kaitou Kid; they always fail, but the feat is still impressive. Outside of his fervour in capturing Kaito Kid, he is a very amiable person and gets along well with his niece and her friends.
- Cool Uncle: For Sonoko and Ayako, mostly the former since she has more appearances. He's an accomplished traveler, has a cool dog, is fairly spirited, rides a motorcycle, and reguarly faces off against one of the most famous thieves in the world.
- Glory Seeker: His sole reason for capturing Kaito Kid stemmed from the fact that the latter has been stealing the limelight from him in the media.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: He uses his considerable wealth to purchase rare and legendary gemstones and jewels for use as a bait for Kid, and to design ingenious traps to catch the master thief in the act.
Ayako Suzuki

Sonoko's elder sister, a gentle young woman who offers quite the contrast with her boisterous little sister.
Dub Name Change: Angie Sebastian.
- The Cameo: After being absent for 700+ chapters, she makes a brief background appearance during Kaito Kid vs Makoto Kyougoku alongside Yuzo.
- Cool Big Sis: Is this for Sonoko, being the most supportive alongside her father and inviting her and Ran to events. Sadly for her, two instances led to Ran and/or Sonoko being involved in a murder case.
- Eyes Always Shut: Self explanatory. They only open when she is significantly shocked.
- Family Theme Naming: Ayako shares a syllable with her mother Tomoko and younger sister Sonoko.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: A downplayed example. Ayako may be more mature and thoughtful than Sonoko, the latter isn't entirely irresponsible or reckless.
- It's All My Fault: During the case she's introduced, she blames herself for the murder of Chikako and the attack on Ran since the reunion was her idea.
- Nice Girl: Ayako is very sweet and polite.
- Official Couple: With Yuzo.
- The Ojou: More of a Type 1 than Sonoko, being much more ladylike and mature than her younger sister.
Yuzo Tomizawa

Ayako's fiance, and Sonoko's future brother-in-law. Yuzo is a young painter, and the son of another rich family.
Dub Name Change: Tod Appenheimer.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has thick, black eyebrows.
- The Cameo: After being absent for over 700+ chapters, he makes a brief background appearance during Kaito Kid vs Makoto Kyougoku alongside Ayako.
- Family Eye Resemblance: His eyes are the same as his brothers.
- Mistaken for Murderer: Twice.
- The first time, it's because when the murder took place, Ayako caught a glimpse of the killer's eyes, which looked exactly like Yuzo's. Then, it turns he out he's the youngest of triplets.
- The second time, it's because the real killer, eldest brother Taichi, tried to make him look guilty. Didn't work thanks to Conan.
- Odd Name Out: Unlike his older brothers and father, he doesn't have an Alliterative Name.
- Official Couple: With Ayako.
- Same-Sex Triplets: The youngest of them. Subverted in that save for their eyes, they don't look THAT alike.
- Self-Made Orphan: Averted. He was one of the three suspects alongside his triplet siblings Taichi and Tatsuji, but he wasn't the culprit. It was the eldest, Taichi.
Persons relating to Eri Kisaki
Reiko Kujou
Voiced by Rica Matsumoto (JP)
A beautiful and strong-willed attorney who serves as Eri's rival.
- 10-Minute Retirement: As "punishment" for her and Eri's unusual handling of the case against Mariko Takeuchi, Reiko's given a six months salary deduction and a month-long technical leave. Reiko considers a well-needed vacation as she hasn't been on one in a long time.
- Art Evolution: In Episode 489, Reiko's appearance changes significantly, having a softer, more gentle expression, longer hair, and lacking lipstick compared to her more stern and serious look. In Episode 606, she's back to her previous appearance.
- Breakout Character: Despite being an anime-only character, she's very popular with fans and is one of the few anime-only characters to make a regular recurring appearance, having shown up for seven episodes at the time of this writing.
- Canon Foreigner: Only appears in the anime.
- Hello, Attorney!: She is quite attractive attorney.
- Heroic BSoD: She briefly undergoes this when a man she assumed was a hardened criminal and dead set on prosecuting seemingly commits suicide and is labeled a scapegoat because of her relentless attempts to make him confess. She considers quitting her job when she thinks she's not cut out for it, only for Conan and Eri to reveal the man was murdered by his spouse who tried making it look as if Reiko drove her husband to suicide.
- Red Baron: She's known as the "Madonna of Prosecutors" thanks to her impressive track record in prospecting criminals. The only person to ever match her in the courtroom is Eri, who job-wise is her opposite.
- The Rival: To Eri, fitting given that Reiko is a prosecutor and Eri is a lawyer.
Midori Kuriyama

Inspector Megure's wife.
- Age-Gap Romance: An implied version. She and Megure first met the former was still in high school while the latter was in the police force.
- Alliterative Name: Midori Megure.
- Bodyguard Crush: She would meet her future husband when he was assigned to protect her from a Serial Killer.
- Character Development: When she is first mentioned in Megure's vocal flashback and officially seen (high school age) during Superintendent Matsumoto's retelling, it's very clear she was very rough, vindictive, and rash. But after near-death experience, she considerably loosened up and is a now more mature, nice woman.
- Dark and Troubled Past: During her high school years, one of her friends was killed by a Serial Killer. Frustrated with the police, Midori made herself a decoy to draw him. It worked, with near-fatal results. She and her future husband survived but retained scars from the incident.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: She had long hair in her youth, but now her hair is in a chin-length style.
- Fat and Skinny: The petite and trim Skinny to Juzo's round and large Fat.
- Former Teen Rebel: She looks like a very level-headed House Wife, but the flashbacks in the episode we "meet" her state that she was a membress of a delinquent gang.
- Genre Savvy: She wore long skirts to deliberately draw the Serial Killer towards herself, since she acted as a Decoy Damsel to get justice for said killer's murder of her best friend. Lampshaded when she lays injured in Megure's arms in his flashback, and she tells him "it didn't work like in the movies."
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a scar on her forehead, coming from the incident in which both she and Megure were almost killed.
- Happily Married: While their marriage is hardly touched upon, it's clear that she and Juzo are in a loving one with only a few fights.

- Joshikousei: When in highschool, and actually a very important point in the case she was involved in, as the length of her school skirt (often used by girl delinquents) drew a Serial Killer to her.

Sakurako Yonehara

A recurring housemaid who had previously gone to the same school as Naeko and Chiba.
- The Chew Toy: Everytime she appears, one of her employer is murdered and she is traumatized.
- Childhood Friends: With the rookie traffic cop Naeko Miike and Officer Chiba.
- The Everyman: She doesn't have much deduction process, strong fighting skill, having an unusual job or atleast extremely wealthy like the characters surround her.
- Mystery Magnet: Poor girl cannot seem to avoid running into murder cases in her workplaces. At one point, even Sakurako begins to think she's cursed to have her jobs inevitiably involve murder cases. Which was lampshaded by Inspector Megure, who fervently hopes that she does not turn into another Kogoro.
Shuukichi Haneda
- Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa
Yumi's ex-boyfriend who is actually a professional Shōgi player. Chapter 972 of the manga reveals that he is a member of the Akai family, more exactly Sera's mysterious "middle brother". His "Haneda" surname comes from his dead mentor, the mysterious Kouji Haneda.
Mandatory Naming Note: His full name Shukichi Haneda (羽田 秀𠮷) and the in-story nickname Taiko (太閤) are both references to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉), who was renamed from Hashiba Hideyoshi (羽柴 秀吉). Additionally, Haneda's "Hane" (羽) also comes from Yoshiharu Habu (羽生 善治), a real-life professional shogi player who has won all seven titles.
- Affectionate Nickname: "Chukichi" by Yumi, even after she breaks up with him. The nickname is why when Sera interacts with Yumi, she doesn't realize her older brother is the same person as Yumi's ex.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: As a professional shoji player, Shukichi is very intelligent. He was shown to be able to participate in solving a murder case next to his house, where he effectively figured out the trick behind the victim's suicide note, as well as the culprit's identity.
- Character Tics: The reason Yumi calls him "Chukichi" is because, when he eats cheese, he makes a "chu" sort-of noise.
- Genius Sweet Tooth: In addition to the above cheese, Shuukichi apparently also really likes cake and eats it whenever he can. It's also mentioned that he upped his game after eating cake during a break in a shogi match when he was in middle school.
- Gotta Catch Them All: His ambition is to win all seven professional shogi title tournaments.note
- Hidden Depths: He seems to know more about Conan than he lets on. In their first meeting, he's silently saw and immediately recognized Conan's deduction skills.
- Hyper-Awareness: Appears to be able to pick out clues in his introductory case at around the same time as Conan. Justified that this ability is probably what made him a successful shogi player.
- Improbable Hairstyle: Shukichi is perhaps the most characterized by his hair, which sticks up in the back like a bed head.
- Insecure Love Interest: Believes that he is unworthy of Yumi until he can win all seven professional shogi title tournaments.
- Living a Double Life: Actively conceals his profession from Yumi as he does not want her to know about his rising celebrity status (he already won four of the seven titles as to date) before his ambition is fulfilled. Also helped by the fact that Yumi does not seem to keep track of news from the shogi world.
- Meaningful Rename: He changed his surname to the one of his Big Brother Mentor, Kouji Haneda. Probably to hide his identity as a member of the Akai and Sera family, and to honor Kouji after his murder.
- Nice Guy: Haneda has a very cheerful personality.
- Perma-Stubble: As seen in the picture.
- Photographic Memory: Haneda is extremely skillful at memorizing, as shown when he managed to remember the code written on Sakurako's paper despite having only seen it for a very short amount of time. He also claims to be the best in this field.Shukichi: "I'm skillful at memorizing such things. I'm the best in Japan... No, maybe even the best in the world."
- The Reveal: Chapter 972 of the manga confirms that he is the mysterious "second brother" of the Akai family, alongside all but confirming Mary aka the Mysterious Child as the matriarch.
- Secret-Keeper: He knows that his brother Shuichi Akai is alive, as shown when he requests for Shuichi to protect Yumi due to a killer targeting policewomen. He is apparently the only person in the family to know this fact.

Mary
- Voiced by: Atsuko Tanaka
An odd pre-teen girl who showed up very recently in both manga and anime, and is shown to be secretly living with Masumi Sera. Confirmed in chapter 972 as the matriarch of the Akai family, a woman in her late 40's/maybe even 50's who is now stuck as a pre-teen. In episode 1005 she's confirmed to be another APTX victim.
Mandatory Naming Note: "Mary" probably comes from Watson's first wife, Mary Morstan.
- Bifauxnen: She looks fairly androgynous, and asks Sera to introduce her as "her little sister from outside the domain" if somebody asks.
- But Not Too Foreign: Her blonde hair, green eyes, and English name scream foreigner but since her maiden name, Sera, is clearly Japanese, that implies she has Japanese heritage somewhere in there. Given the strong hints that her sister is Elena Miyano (confirmed to have Japanese ancestry in File 1011), this is likely to be true.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: Mary is short-haired, but once had hair long enough to put in a Tomboyish Ponytail.
- Foreshadowing: She has sharp eyes similar to Akai's and Sera's and is seen super happy when she sees Shuukichi winning his shougi matches. This subtly hints to a connection between them - She's their mother.
- Lady of War: As an actual teenager, Mary was a skilled kendo practitioner. She also sparred/had a massive fight with her son Shuuichi in the past, and accidentally hit him in the eye with her weapon - which is the source of the scar on his face.
- Little Miss Badass: Mary has demonstrated the ability to hang from a balcony by a thin rope/wire and hug the wall like a Ninja, and later vault back up on to the balcony. She also can knock out grown adults if they attack her.
- No Social Skills: Especially towards her three children; she loves them deeply but tends to keep at arm's reach - and sometimes she can be, well, kind of an asshole to them. This really bites her after APTX 4869 leaves her vulnerable and in need of others' help. She appears to want Conan's aid and resources when it comes to the Black Org, but her directions to Masumi in regards to Conan and his allies are disrespectful and ultimately self-sabotaging; the tactless invasions of privacy only encourage Conan's faction to treat the Seras as a threat to their security.
- The Reveal: 972 pretty much confirms Mary as the matriarch of the Akai family.
- Episode 849 sneaks some more info: It shows a legal paper with the names of Haneda Shukichi's parents, which was far more blurry in the manga: the father's name is Tsutomu Akai... and the mother's is Mary Sera. So yeah...
- In 1005 Mary appears again, and it's confirmed that she's another victim of the APTX 4869 poison. Plus she and Masumi are not only looking for a cure, but seem to have plans of their own.
- Episode 849 sneaks some more info
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She acts cool and poised, but seems to be genuinely giddy when she sees Haneda win one of his matches.
- Vocal Dissonance: Looks like a middle school aged child...and sounds like a mature adult woman. This only boosted the speculation that she's an APTX victim, which is confirmed in 972: in a flashback to 10 years ago there's a woman with a young adult son (Akai), a teenage second son (Shuukichi), and a little daughter (Sera), and she turns out to have been a still not-shrunk Mary.
- Wise Beyond Her Years: She seems to be very mature for someone who is middle-school age (12-15 in Japan) tops. It's been speculated that she might be another victim of the Organization, shrunk by the same drug that made Shinichi/Conan and Ai/Shiho into "kids". This is confirmed in 959 Sera, while panicking, called her "mama", plus 972 has her as an adult woman who's referred to as "Mary-okaasan" ("Mom Mary") by Shuichi and Shukichi...
Tsutomu
A mysterious man who has been missing for almost 17 years... His whole name is Tsutomu Akai, and he is Mary's husband plus the father of Shuichi Akai, Shukichi Haneda, and Masumi Sera.
Mandatory Naming Note:The kanji in his name, 務武, can also be read as "Zumu". This is a possible reference to Zeon Zum Deikun (ジオン・ズム・ダイクン Jion Zumu Daikun?), the father of Char Aznable... hinting at him being the father of Shuichi Akai.
- Disappeared Dad: The missing patriarch of the Akai family. It's specially strong in the case of his youngest child, since he disappeared before said child, Masumi, was born.
- It's Personal: His eldest child Shuichi, was quite affected by his disappearance.
- Mysterious Past: It seems he was involved in the deaths of Amanda and Haneda and somehow gained lots of enemies, so as a result he had to send his whole family away.
- Strong Family Resemblance: He's said to look a lot like his middle child, Shukichi Haneda.

Soushi Okita
- Voiced by: Koji Yusa
A handsome, cheerful fellow who is Heiji's other rival, this time in kendo. He attends Momiji's school.
Mandatory Naming Note: Logically, named after the legendary swordsman Okita Souji (沖田 総司). Okita himself is a descendant of the legendary one in-story.
- Adaptational Wimp: Given that the Detective Conan universe has no magic to know of, he (and the rest if the Yaiba cast) would be far weaker than their original counterparts.
- Canon Immigrant: He's actually a character from Yaiba.
- Handsome Lech: Yet another good-looking fellow who hits on the beautiful Ran. And Heiji whacks him for his trouble.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Momiji sometimes calls him "that Kendo boy".
- Identical Stranger: Basically, he's Shinichi with a Samurai Ponytail. Ran even briefly sees him as Shinichi as they talk. Their similarities becomes a plot point, as Heiji tells the mass media that they probably mistook Shinichi for Okita. Contrary to Shinichi and Kaitou, however, Okita is not voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.
- Kendo Team Captain: For his Kyoto-based school.
- Late-Arrival Spoiler: For those, who aren't familiar with Yaiba. Okita appears only in the final arc of that series. He also has a photo of his crush, Moroha Kurogane, Yaiba's younger sister who also appears only in that final arc.
- The Rival: For Heiji Hattori in terms of kendo and unlike his rivalry with Shinichi, it's far from friendly. Okita, however views Yaiba as his true rival.

The Ooka Clan
Momiji Ooka

A schoolgirl who seems to have a special connection with Heiji Hattori...
Mandatory Naming Note: Her surname name, Ooka, comes from Ooka Tadasuke (大岡 忠相). Not only he was a Real Life samurai and magistrate in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, but has been featured in jidai geki series like Ōoka Echizen and Meibugyō! Ōoka Echizen, among others.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: She catches on some clues of the second case she's in... before Amuro or Conan do. Even better, she wasn't there to start with: someone she knew (her butler Iori Muga) gave her details through cellphone, she decoded them and relayed her discoveries to him. Even adding some stuff that her informant had not caught on..
- Betty and Veronica: The mysterious, girly, ojou "Veronica" to Kazuha's tomboyish, Hot-Blooded childhood friend "Betty" for Heiji's "Archie". Subverted in that the promise Heiji made with Momiji wasn't of marriage and he's already in love with Kazuha, though Momiji still hasn't lost hope of winning his affection.
- Break the Haughty: In the movie, she was rather snobbish to Kazuha out of jealousy over Heiji... and then it turns out the promise that she and Heiji made was not a marriage one. She logically doesn't take it well.
- Buxom Beauty Standard: In Chapter 1002 of the manga, Momiji shows up and there's a bit of emphasis on her bust. Sera seems to be quite... fascinated by her boobage.Sera: What did she eat to make hers grow so big?
- Childhood Marriage Promise: Subverted. Throughout most of the 21st movie, everyone believes Heiji made one with Momiji when they were children. In actuality, he won against her in a karuta game, and she was crying about her loss, and in an attempt to console her, he asked her to make a promise with him that she would get stronger. However, Momiji misheard what Heiji said, and thought it was a proposal.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Okita refers to Momiji as "Boobs" in a talk with Ran.
- Executive Meddling: Done In-Universe in Chapter 1088 - in exchange for her family sponsoring a detective play, the producers agree to include her in the cast, playing the role of Heiji's fiancée.
- Foil:
- To Kazuha — Both of them know Heiji since childhood — Kazuha as they grew up together and Momiji because they competed in a karuta tournament as children and have a picture of him that serves as a Good Luck Charm. Kazuha is a middle-class Action Girl with long hair in a ponytail, a dark-blue Sailor Fuku, rather tomboyish behavior and looks, who doesn't aim to be an Amateur Sleuth, who can go from Tsundere to Cannot Spit It Out regarding Heiji, and worries a lot for his sake and safety; Momiji, on the other hand, is a very rich girl with shorter hair and no hair decs, a white and gray Sailor Fuku, very Girly Girl-like mannerisms (i.e. she paints her nails in rather elaborate patterns and wears small earrings), is implied to be an Amateur Sleuth, is very vocal about her feelings for Heiji and holds an unyielding faith in his skills and strength. Also, while Kazuha's debut has her acting hostile towards Ran after thinking the latter was Heiji's Tokyo girlfriend, Kazuha also warns Ran not to break Heiji's heart; when Momiji meets Kazuha, she instantly knows her feelings for Heiji and assumes that she has the upper hand, letting Kazuha know that rather smugly.
- To Asami Uchida — Both are the apparent first loves to a high school detective, considered beautiful, and talented, something that causes the detective's main love interest insecurity. Asami was acquainted with Shinichi and Ran in their middle school years, had a friendly relationship with Ran, deliberately lied about being Shinichi's First Love because she wanted to "be a little mean", but later accepted he would never return her feelings; Momiji had a chance encounter with Heiji as children which he forgot and met up with him and Kazuha as teens, her relationship with the latter is laced with passive-aggression, she genuinely thought she that Heiji made a Childhood Marriage Promise (it turned out to be a miscommunication on her part), and remains in love with Heiji. Also, while Asami was one-shot character with a Small Role, Big Impact, Momiji is a recurring one.
- Good Luck Charm: Carries a picture of her and Heiji as children making a pinky promise.
- Hopeless Suitor: It turns out her pinky promise with Heiji was not a marriage proposal. Also, while he doesn't hate her, his romantic feelings are geared solely towards Kazuha.
- Jerkass: Most of her screentime in the movie had her acting rude and snobbish to Kazuha. Downplayed later in the manga, where she's more passive-aggressive than an open jerk.
- The Ojou: The Ice Queen type with dashes of Spoiled Brat, from what it's been shown. Her family's butler Iori Muga follows her everywhere and, when not wearing her Sailor Fuku, she's seen in a kimono.
- Passionate Sports Girl: She's the junior champion of the hyakunin issha garuta card game.
- Pinky Swear: In the trailer for the 21th movie, she's seen making one with Heiji.
- Sailor Fuku: Shown wearing one in her manga introduction. According to the movie it has a white blouse, light gray collar/skirt, dark blue scarf and dark grey lines on its collar and cuffs.
- Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: She seems to be dead set on marrying Heiji. Some notes suggest that she might have a shared past with him, probably a Childhood Marriage Promise. The trailer of the 21th movie supports this as there are mentions of a promise the two apparently made, coupled with an image of a young Heiji and a young Momiji making a Pinky Swear. However, it turned out that Heiji promised Momiji to get stronger and the next time they meet they'll have a karuta rematch. She thought he was proposing to her.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: All lovey-dovey when around Heiji, fairly polite though a little cold to others, and quite passive-aggressive to both Kazuha and Okita.
Iori Muga

A servant of the Ooka family, plus Momiji's devoted companion.
Mandatory Naming Note: His name, Muga Iori, comes from Iori Sakakibara (榊原 伊織 Sakakibara Iori?), a doctor and close friend of Ooka Tadasuke in the series Ōoka Echizen, and Muga Takewaki (竹脇 無我 Takewaki Muga?), the actor who plays the role of Iori Sakakibara in the series. Sakakibara was also his alias during his days as an undercover officer.
- The Butler Did It: He's seen as a suspect in a case, but he's an obvious Red Herring. Plus he was in a disguise so no one knew he was a butler to start with.
- Master of Disguise: His first apparition has him calling himself "Shinichi Wada", using fake glasses, and hiding his long hair under a hat.
- Meaningful Name: The name he once used when under a disguise, Shinichi Wada, was also the localized name of Dr. John Watson in one of the first translated releases of A Study in Scarlet in Japan.
- Shipper on Deck: Fully supports his "Miss/Lady Momiji"'s bid for Heiji Hattori's heart.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He has odd Messy Hair, but other than that he's pretty good-looking.
- Undercover Cop Reveal: It is revealed at the end of Chapter 1090 that he used to work undercover. Due to certain terminology he and Kuroda used, and him being aware of Amuro's real occupation, it's implied that he's ex-PSB, which is confirmed in Chapter 1115.

Azusa Enomoto
Voiced by Mikiko Enomoto (JP), Janice Kawaye (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom), Betsabé Guitérrez and Josefina Becerra (third Latin-American Spanish dub)
An employee of Café Poirot, the coffee shop directly underneath the Mouri Detective Agency. She is often seen serving Mouri a cup of coffee and occasionally gives him a case that needs to be solved. Later on, Tooru Amuro begins working at her cafe.
- Art Evolution: To say her appearance drastically changed as the series went on would be quite an understatement. She's literally had three◊ different◊ looks including her most recent appearance seen here.
- Big Sister Instinct: She is normally a nice girl, but when her brother is suspected for murder, she would lie and manipulate the police force in order to prove his innocence.
- Canon Immigrant: Originally a filler character, she later makes her first manga appearance in chapter 438, where her character design was changed for the second time and has stuck.
- Defeat by Modesty: Invoked. She acting shy and scare to Takagi and pretend to pick out underwear to lead him to leave her unsupervised and escape to see her brother.
- Monster of the Week: Her brother, Sugihito Enomoto, becomes a murder suspect for the Present from the True Culprit case.
- Hidden Depths: She is shown to be have quite a manipulative side to her, as she effortlessly manipulate Takagi to leave her unsupervised in the woman underwear department by blushing and acting shy.

Yoko Okino

A popular idol whom Kogoro is a big fan of.
- Harp of Femininity: A scene of a TV drama she's starring on in-story has her playing the harp while in a very girly Pimped-Out Dress.
- Idol Singer: Her day job. She also used to be a member of an idol singer group, and her three former teammates appear in one case where one of them attempts to murder another one due to misunderstandings.
- Married to the Job: She said that she can't be dating because she is focusing on her career, although it can be because given the Comic-Book Time timeline of the series, she is still canonically mourning the Spiteful Suicide of her ex-boyfriend.
- Mistaken for Romance: She and her former classmate Ryusuke Higo once go into a friendly outing. Everyone else thinks they're dating, including Ai and Kogoro.
- Nice Girl: A friendly and modest person. She's very, very rich and famous, but remains a very kind and gentle girl nevertheless. It's another reason why she's so popular.
- Plucky Girl: The day after her ex-boyfriend was Spurned into Suicide and framed her as he died, Yoko returned to work. Ran comments on her strength of mind and heart.
Fusae Campbell Kinoshita

Famous fashion designer using gingko leaves as her personal motif.
- All of the Other Reindeer: Because she had unusual features for a Japanese person (i.e. blond hair), she was viciously teased by her classmates, sans Professor Agasa.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: Part of the reason Agasa was her First Love was because he was the only one in their class who didn't make fun of her blonde hair.
- But Not Too Foreign: One can guess from the name. Although her introduction arc also discussed a Real Life issue: she tends to hide her blond hair as the very xenophobic Japanese would have quite a bit of prejudice against people of mixed blood like her. And especially when her story was supposedly set 40 years ago, a few years after World War II.
- Childhood Friend Romance: With Agasa, but it's downplayed given that while they were each other's First Love they haven't made any progress in their relationship in a romantic fashion.
- First Love: To her childhood friend, Agasa.
- Flower Motifs: She's an accessory fashion designer with a ginkgo leaf-themed brand.
- Girlish Pigtails: Her hairstyle when she was in the first grade.
- Nice Girl: Fusae has a kind and caring personality, evidenced when she loaned Ran her umbrella while waiting for Agasa ten years prior to the current timeline.

- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Professor Hiroshi Agasa — She disappeared one day when they were children and when they meet up again, Poor Communication Kills comes again when Fusae lies about having a husband because she thought the Detective Boys were his grandchildren and that he didn't remember her, causing her to decide that this may be the last time she'll see him; however, Agasa tells her in his own way that he never forgot her. And then she leaves for mysterious reasons, deciding that she will see him again in another 10 years (her family friend posing as her husband muses that it may be even sooner than that).
Hikaru Yasumoto

Dr. Araide's housekeeper.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: Not Played for Laughs, as Dr. Araide Sr. treats her harshly due to her blunders.
- Unwitting Pawn: And Conan, Inspector Megure, and Dr. Araide's second wife/killer make sure it stays that way. Would anyone want to know that they accidentally killed someone by flipping on the lights at the worst moment? Poor Hikaru.
Samizu Kichiemon
A deceased doll-maker dating back to the Bakumatsu era. Samizu was known as a genius that developed dangerous contraptions to safeguard several precious objects and gems.
Throughout the series, Conan and company come across some of his famous inventions that have lasted until the current day, and serve as some of the series' cases that requires Conan to figure out how Samizu's contraptions work.
- Cool Old Guy: The few images seen of Samizu portrays him as an old man, and given the neat contraptions he made during his lifetime, he was damn good at his work.
- Crazy-Prepared: Samizu knew how to come up with a few crazy tricks related to some of the structures and safes that Samizu built over the years to hide certain things of value.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Invented dangerous mechanical contraptions and structures to safeguard precious objects.
- Posthumous Character: A character that's been long dead since he's from a time-period that took place in the 1800s.
Rumi Wakasa

A school teacher who works at Teitan Elementary, as Sumiko Kobayashi's assistant.
- Ambiguous Situation: Her flashback in Chapter 1033 has her recalling what seems to have been Kohji Haneda's last words to his murderer, and remarking him as a fool, which indicates she had been present during the case seventeen years ago. Chapter 1106 clears up the situation by revealing she is Asaka, Amanda Hughe's bodyguard.
- Bespectacled Cutie: A gentle and sweet woman (most of the time) who wears glasses.
- Blind Mistake: In 988, she is entranced as she looks at Kuroda, when Ayumi walks up to her on her right side. After Ayumi calls out her name a few times, she is finally stirred out of her trance. She then looks both ways and still doesn't see Ayumi, who is standing to her right about 2 metres away from her. She then turns her head all the way to the right, and we see her left eye look at Ayumi, whom she apparently finally sees. Chapter 1106 reveals she has transience amaurosis on that particular eye.
- Connected All Along: Chapter 1106 reveals she was Amanda Hughes' bodyguard Rachel Asaka, the prime suspect in the latter's murder and speculated to be Rum based on Kohji Haneda's Dying Clue.
- Covered with Scars: Chapter 1005 depicts her in her underwear while she's alone in her apartment, and it's shown that some parts of her body are covered with these.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: Her clumsiness is mostly played for laughs. Until 988, where Conan and Ai realize that it's maybe linked to lack of peripheral view...opening the possibility of her being the infamous Rum.
- Dark and Troubled Past: She's implied to be far more than what she seems. She lost her parents at a young age and was taken in by Amanda Hughes, who was her late father's employer, later becoming her bodyguard "Asaka". However, when both Amanda and Kohji ended up murdered by Rum, she was named the primary suspect.
- Jerkass Ball: With the reveal that she isn't part of the Black Organization, her action of throwing away Ayumi's 4-leaf clovers seem needlessly dickish and only arouse Conan's suspicion of her.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: She presents herself as a well-intentioned but clumsy and a bit child-like woman, but in her introductory case she donned a far more badass persona complete with Scary Shiny Glasses as soon as Conan and Co. were away. This has made the fandom wonder if she is the infamous Rum after all: in 988 Ai and Conan speculate that, like other people suspected to be Rum, she seems to be unable to see from her right eye...
- In 988, as she speaks to Superintendent Kuroda, Rumi slips into a far more serious persona with a very dry wit and a sharp glance.
- In 989, when the suspect of the case grabs Ayumi and tries to use her as a hostage, Rumi gives him both the mother of death glares and a borderline Slasher Smile, terrifying the guy so much that he drops his guard and this allows Kuroda to disarm him and rescue Ayumi.
- Red Herring: Alongside superintendent Kuroda, she was one of the people Conan and Ai suspected was Rum. Although later chapters cleared her of suspicion, she's still implied to have some kind of connection to the Black Organization, as she notes Ai resembles the people who "made her life a living hell".
- Sensei-chan: At first glance she fits in since she's very gentle and sweet but also quite clumsy. But as already said, she subverts this since has a Badass Teacher side that only comes out when it's really needed and is also implied to have had a Dark and Troubled Past.
- Shrinking Violet: Subverted, she looks sweet and unassuming but at times it's all but it's stated (and shown) that she's tougher than she looks.
- Out-Gambitted: She outsmarted Rum by letting Kobayashi take her umbrella and almost got shot by his assassins to found out about their location.
Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes

Two persons who died in similar and very mysterious circumstances several years ago. Kouji was a mentor-like figure for Shukichi Haneda and a shogi champion who also played chess, Amanda was a rich American woman and a fan of his, and both of them perished in the same American hotel. Ai says that Kohji Haneda's name was on the list of people killed by APTX 4869.
Mandatory Naming Note: "Kohji Haneda" (羽田 浩司 Haneda Kōji?) probably comes from Yoshiharu Habu (羽生 善治 Habu Yoshiharu?) and Kōji Tanigawa (谷川 浩司 Tanigawa Kōji?), real-life shogi players.
- Big Brother Mentor: Kohji was this to Shuukichi, who apparently took up his surname out of respect for him. note
- Bodyguard Betrayal: It's been speculated that Amanda's bodyguard Asaka, who went missing when she and Kouji died, was actually the B.O. agent Rum in disguise and that he killed both Kouji and her. Chapter 1106 later reveals this was not the case, as Asaka was a much younger Rumi Wakasa and considered the woman like a mother. Amanda even willingly sacrificed herself so that Rum wouldn't be able to use Asaka as leverage against her.
- Dying Clue: Some of these were left in the place where Kouji died with a broken hand mirror. It spelled out "ASACA IS RUM", though it later turns out the message spelled "CARASUMA", as in the Black Organization leader's name.
- He Knows Too Much: Probably the case with Amanda, since she seems to have been in good terms with people from the CIA and FBI. The fact Kohji's Dying Clue spells out "Carasuma" adds more incentive to why Amanda was murdered. Kohji likewise was also killed due to his association with Amanda on top of identifying Karusuma Renya as connected to the Black Organization.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Both of them. Haneda hid Asaka in order to save her from being killed by Rum and his men which resulted in his own death at Rum's hands. Amanda also willing took the poison and killed herself in order to protect Asaka.
- Mama Bear: Upon Rum informing Amanda that he plans on using use her bodyguard Asaka who she raised as her own daughter as leverage, Amanda forced the poison Rum was threatening to use out of hand and willingly swallowed it to protect her.
- Parental Substitute: Amanda raised Asaka and considered her to be a daughter.
- Posthumous Character: Both of them died 17 years ago.
- Small Role, Big Impact: This case is what inspired Shuichi Akai to start working for the FBI.
- Smart People Play Chess: The very smart Kohji played both traditional chess and shogi, which is known as "Japanese chess".
- Would Hit a Girl: He knocked out Asaka with a taser so he could hide her limp unconscious body behind a bookshelf to hide her from Rum.
