The Darkest Nightmare provides examples of:

  • Action Prologue: The has an extremely action packed opening: Curaçao raids the NPA Security Bureau before being chased by both Amuro Tōru/Bourbon and Akai Shūichi on the Rainbow Bridge.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: Curaçao without her memories is a little shy but friendly and almost childlike, which makes her a great playmate for the Detective Boys.
  • Amnesiac Villain Joins the Heroes: Without her memories, Curaçao hangs out with the Detective Boys and Agasa, despite being Rum’s right hand.
  • Ate It All: Genta eats everyones snacks in the beginning of the film, to Ayumi and Mitsuhiko’s annoyance.
  • Badass Driver: In the beginning of the movie, Amuro, Akai and Curaçao prove that they all are badass behind the wheel.
  • Big Bad: For the first time in the Conan movie series, the Black Organization are the sole villains of the film (previous films with their involvement has always had some other criminal in tandem).
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Burbon and Kir have been tied up and are about to be executed by Gin, Akai shoots the light in the room before kicking opening the door to make it look like an escape for Bourbon.
  • Chase Scene: The film opens on one, with Amuro in his White 1991 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type-A and Akai in his Race Red 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 SVT [S197] hunting down Curaçao in her stolen Dark Blue 1980 Toyota Mark II [X60] on the Rainbow Bridge.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: With Amuro and Akai hot on her heels, Curaçao has only one Gratuitous English curse to mutter.
    Curaçao: Shit!
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the film’s finale, Curaçao rams the runaway Ferris Wheel with a crane, despite being Impaled with Extreme Prejudice to save the Detective Boys. She is crushed to death by the wheel immediately afterward.
  • Identity Amnesia: Curaçao completely forgets her identity and every memory she has after she tumbles off the Rainbow Bridge. She still retains her motor skills, though.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: When playing darts at the Tohto Aquarium, Curaçao is able to get a new high score. This tips of Conan and Haibara that she is more than meets the eye.
    • And of course, with Akai Shūichi in the film, this was a given. Notably, he takes down the Black Organization’s helicopter with one shot.
      Akai Shūichi: Fall down!
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Before you watch this film, the movie expects you to already know Shūichi is alive and Amuro is affiliated with the NPA Security Bureau.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Furuya tells Akai and the FBI to back off depsite having a common enemy. When Akai refuses, a fight breaks out. They are mostly evenly matched, though Akai seems to have a slight physical advantage. Conan ends up inadvertently stopping their fight.
    • This ends up being Lampshaded by Akai:
Akai: I believe I told you, Amuro-kun. Don’t mistake the opponent that you must hunt down.
  • No-Respect Guy: Poor Professor Agasa is disrepected by the Detective Boys for getting more hurt trying to save Genta than Genta’s savior Curaçao and for being a Henpecked Adoptive Father to Haibara.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Played for Laughs. When the Detective Boys want to ride the Ferris Wheel but cannot they call their friend Sonoko who basically owns the park.
  • Sequel Hook: After all the credits, we hear a very familiar voice ask a mysterious question to an unknown person as a way to hype of the 21th film, Detective Conan Film 21: The Crimson Love Letter
Heiji: So…You’ve been keeping it a secret, huh?
  • Spider-Sense: Haibara’s “Black Organization Sense” is able to figure out that Curaçao is with them.
