The Rival and the secondary male protagonist of the series. Major Jin Kisaragi is one of the elite commanding officers of the NOL. Known famously as the "Hero of Ikaruga", Jin is aloof, cold, arrogant, borderline sociopathic, and teeters on the edge of insanity, with a disturbing and almost incestuous fixation upon his brother. Despite all this, he genuinely earned his status, and is respected among the NOL's ranks, even though his own opinion of the organization is dubious at best. Jin also has an irrational hatred for his subordinate, Noel Vermillion. His sword, Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa, is a katana with a blade made of pure ice; it's one of the Nox Nyctores, an Evil Weapon that both rekindles his lost memories, turning him insane and inspires homicidal fury around Ragna and Noel.

Ragna got fed up with his especially needy attitude as a kid, and when Ragna ignored him in favor of Saya (whom Noel resembles, which is why he hates her), Jin's slow path to insanity began. He apparently began having visions of the future, which may or may not have been induced by Terumi or Yukianesa, and as Terumi assaulted the church, he possessed Jin, told him that Ragna will be responsible of the world's destruction, and made Jin cut off Ragna's arm. Terumi then ran off with Saya and Jin, wiped Jin's memory of the incident, and Jin never saw Saya again. He was later adopted into the noble Kisaragi house, joined the academy, and quickly rose up the ranks; after graduating, he's quickly appointed to the fields to deal with Ikaruga Civil War, and afterwards was given the Major rank. When he heard Ragna had been sighted in Kagutsuchi, he actively disobeys the Library's orders and hunts him down by himself. Ultimately becoming a Fallen Hero as seen by many, although in terms of the story (particularly the sequels) he's slowly becoming a true hero.

His arcade playthroughs are named, in order of the game: Impossible meeting, Resume and Determination. His story playthroughs are named, in the first 2 games: False hero and Decision.

His Drive, Reitou/Frost Bite, freezes his opponents. In Chronophantasma, his Overdrive is Zettou/Frost End, which enhances his freezing abilities by causing every attack involving his sword Yukianesa to re-freeze the opponent.

In the fourth game, his Exceed Accel Kokuujin Ougi: Gekka Hyourou/Empty Sky True Form: Crystal Moonstorm (Empty Air Blade Secret Skill: Ice Tower Under the Moon) has him doing a quick upward slash. If it hits, he then freezes his enemy in midair, then slashing them multiple times, ending with a powerful slash. His Astral Finish, Rengoku Hyōya/Arctic Dungeon, involves him firing a small but fast wave of ice on the ground that is unblockable. If it connects, the opponent is frozen along with the background, then shattered.

  • Above Good and Evil: Jubei states that his Power of Order is neither good or evil, and what Jin uses it for is entirely up to him. Jin decides to use it to maintain the world's "order" and eliminate any force that would disrupt it.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: To the point that it can slice through magical barriers/fields. The first time we see this is in CS, where he cuts his way out of Phantom's magical field after his fight with Tsubaki.
  • Abusive Parents: From what is shown of his life with the Kisaragi family following the church fire, he wasn't treated as being part of the family, with most of them hating and resenting his guts and even sending assassins to kill him.
  • The Ace: He is considered to be the single most powerful warrior within the NOL's arsenal, and only rivaled by his comrade-in-arms, Kagura. When he awakened to his Power of Order, he is pretty much now equal in power to his older brother, Ragna. He is also a Child Prodigy who earned each and everything any man would fight and die for, is next in-line to inherit the Kisaragi Family, was the head of the Student Council in his tenure, well-respected among his peers and classmates alike, and the youngest individual to earn the title of "Hero."
  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga, Ragna pretty much needed to activate the Azure Grimoire in order to defeat him, while in the games, Ragna can beat Jin without it.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In The Anime of the Game, Jin is noticeably less antagonistic and while still a jerk, at least somewhat respectful of others.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed in Blazblue Alter Memory: in games, Jin is already quite a jerk, but he still has a soft spot for his Childhood Friend Tsubaki. Here, that soft spot is gone.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: He doesn't really care that much, but this pretty much sums up his status in the Kisaragi family despite the enormous amount of awards and accomplishments he took home with him in their name. It's easy to see how he easily decided to cut his connections with them after he abandons his post in the Librarium.
  • Aloof Ally: In Chronophantasma, He becomes part of the heroic faction and is noticeably more focused on saving Tsubaki and although he is still antagonistic towards Ragna, he is willing to put his murderous desire aside and cooperate if it means saving Tsubaki. However, he is still cold towards Noel and remains anti-social.
  • Aloof Big Brother: See Ragna's entry. Jin becomes one to Saya partly due to that. In Wheel of Fortune, he was actually as compassionate to her as Ragna was. He's also one to Noel technically since she has part of Saya's soul, although he doesn't know it until much later.
  • Always Save the Girl: The first question that came to Jin's mind after Tsubaki's Face–Heel Turn was if he could save her.
  • Alternate Company Equivalent: Let's see...wears mostly blue, wields an absurdly sharp katana, had their home burned down by an outside malignant force and because of said tragedy, has a complicated relationship with his brother who's also clad in red and black. You sure we aren't talking about Vergil here?
  • Ambiguously Gay: Only in Gag Reels. The developers really have fun with Jin's unhealthy obsession with Ragna. Though in canon, he averts this trope.
  • Ambiguously Human: Confirmed by the fourth game, He, along with Ragna and Saya, is the "child" of the 5th Prime Field Device, making him a natural son of an artificial human.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: Due to Terumi erasing his memories, he was actually pretty normal during his academy days; though still cold and serious, he could even be nice at times. This all went to hell after the Ikaruga War...
  • Ancestral Weapon: His Yukianesa was first wielded by Seven of Ishana's Ten Sages; he was also then-current head of the Kisaragi family.
  • Animal Battle Aura: For some odd reason, his crest (and thus aura) displays a unicorn.
  • Animal Motifs: Jin is frequently depicted as a Fox in fanworks (there's also a piece of art by Mori that gives him fox ears). The creators also seems to agree because in one "Chrono Phantasma: EXTEND" gag real, he was given fox ears to further drive this point home.
  • Animals Hate Him: Whereas Cat Girl Taokaka has normal victory quotes when fighting all the other characters, her response to Jin is just growling and hissing and "Tao doesn't like you!"
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: As a child, Jin was described as a "crybaby", being sensitive and extremely attached to Ragna. He was often jealous of the attention that Saya was shown and would cry whenever Ragna was ill. He was also terrified of the moon, thinking it would crash at any second. It's easy to see why Ragna got so annoyed with him and paid more attention to Saya.
  • Anti-Hero: Jin is cold, aloof, and borderline sociopathic. He cares little for the feelings of others, and denounces, in his own words, trivialities like camaraderie, believing that such things are lies that people use to their advantage. He has no compunction with killing anyone who gets in the way of his goal. In addition, he repeatedly shows that he dislikes reminiscing about the past, particularly about his days at the Military Academy. But after Character Development, he goes from a figurehead hero to an actual one. Although his attitude hasn't really changed all that much, just who he fights against.
  • Arch-Enemy: Before both had their Character Development, Jin was easily one of the most personal enemies Ragna had in the series, possibly second only to Yuuki Terumi himself. Any fights between the two would always involve a lot of screaming for the other to die.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: To the nth degree. What contributes to his jerkish nature is that he's fully aware of how skilled he is. Almost all of his Arcade win quotes, in all three games are just trash talking at how inferior his opponent is and how foolish it was for them to fight him.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Unlike Ky Kiske, he damn well worked his way up to "authority" status, which makes him utterly badass. On the other hand, though, it is implied that what he did in Ikaruga War was partly orchestrated by NOL, and especially Hazama, so that he can become NOL's figurehead hero. In particular, it is stated that Hazama sentenced other NOL troops who are potentially stronger/more helpful than Jin with false crimes.
  • Ax-Crazy: Because of his weapon, he becomes this whenever he's around Ragna, Jin loses his calm, detached demeanor and reverts to his childhood self. His voice becomes noticeably more ecstatic, and he is now prone to fits of maniacal laughter. After a psychotherapy session with Hakumen and Jubei, he has been more-or-less cured. He's still an aloof jerk, though, and delves back into Ax-Crazy whenever he sees Ragna, though he now has the capacity to ignore his Brother if there are more pressing concerns. By Central Fiction he gets over this and becomes more similar to his other self Hakumen.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: One of his pre-fight poses.
  • Badass Biker: His favorite hobby is collecting vintage motorcycles. Unfortunately, he is never seen riding one in the main series, although a few promotional artworks does depict him riding one. Interestingly, this also seems to contrast with Ragna's more effeminate hobby of "Cooking".
  • Badass Boast: "I am the cold steel... the blade that will restore balance to this world!" Only seen once, but it's the first time he's activated Yukianesa against its will, signaling that he Took a Level in Badass. Also, afterward, he is one of the few characters that doesn't receive a severe beatdown after fighting Hazama in story mode.
  • Badass Bookworm: A prodigy during the Academy days and grew up to become a badass.
  • Badass Cape: In a variant, the cape in question consists of 2 long strips of cloth hanging above the sides of his coat, making them look like pseudo-sleeves. He can sometimes use them to attack.
    • He now wears a more proper, stylish one by the end of Central Fiction. Heavily implying that he has been promoted to a much higher rank now in service to Homura Amanohokasaka.
  • Badass Creed: Before he defected, he recited the NOL's creed whenever he faced off against Noel, Hazama, Tsubaki, and Makoto in a match. He also has another near the end of his Continuum Shift route after his "No More Holding Back" Speech against Tsubaki after her Face–Heel Turn. It's also remarkably similar to Hakumen's own Badass Creed.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He looks extremely savy and good in that formal NOL outfit with a suit and tie. By the end of Central Fiction, he's now wearing a stylish Badass Cape to go along with it. And of course, he's badass.
  • Badass in Distress: In Makoto's CS story, Jin is in far too bad a shape to fight back against Hazama, who had come along with the intention of killing him. Rather than sit back and watch it happen, Makoto parries the hit and fights Hazama in Jin's place. Hazama "wins" (then again, Hazama), but Jin bails her out, having recovered enough strength to freeze Hazama in his tracks.
  • Badass Family: With Ragna and Noel. While the family is kind of screwed up, Ragna, Jin and Noel are a family. The Grim Reaper, the Hero of Ikaruga and the Eye of the Azure are siblings. Several openings, namely the Chronophantasma Extend opening, show them fighting together.
  • Badass Longcoat: His NOL military outfit has one, complete with whip sleeves.
  • Bad Boss: Towards Noel, until he is less hostile towards her in Chronophantasma. Despite that, he still insults and demeans her every chance he gets, downplaying the trope.
  • Beat the Curse Out of Him: He plans to do this to Tsubaki in CP, along with Noel and Makoto. He succeeds in story mode by using their vow they made together at a young age to always stay together, although it actually ends with a I Know Youre In There Some Where Fight as she finally breaks free from Mind Eater after she stabs him with Immortal Breaker.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Not bad, but still extremely unpleasant. But, he is still the most attractive male character in the series.
  • Berserk Button: He really won't tolerate anyone, not even Tsubaki, getting in the way of his feud with his brother. Deconstructed in Wheel of Fortune where his obsession with fighting Ragna led to him ignoring her and sweeping her aside, and indirectly led to her death by Nu.
  • Beta Couple: His relatively stable and supportive relationship with Tsubaki contrasts with Ragna's more dysfunctional relationship with the females in his life.
  • Beta Test Baddie: If his bios are of any indication then he is ultimately this. As much good publicity and praises Jin has, it doesn't change the fact that he is essentially an outcast.
  • Beyond the Impossible: After "Calamity Trigger", he's had some noticeable feats. The Power of Order is built on this, as well.
    • He started his journey in "Continuum Shift" heavily injured, with his condition progressing even worse (thanks a lot, Valkenhaynn) and was still able to fight off powerful characters like Ragna and Hazama. The latter of which he manages while also protecting Makoto at the same time. Seriously, any ordinary man would have already knocked on heaven's door, by that point.
    • He dodged Take-Mikazuchi's laser at point-blank range.
    • Was savagely beaten by a Black Beast-empowered Ragna going out of control at the end of "Chrono Phantasma" and still survived albeit temporarily putting him out of commission until he made a Deal with the Devil with Trinity.
    • His Big Damn Heroes moment in "Central Fiction" when he stabilized Yuna and Sena's existence using only his will through the Power of Order. Normally only an Observer could do that.
    • Was able to fight and hold off the Destroyer Deity, Susano'o (basically, the game's version of a 100% fully-powered Hakumen) and last long enough for him to perceive his existence as a separate entity from Noel (which was fused with him).
  • Big Brother Bully: Because Ragna favored Saya over him, he constantly picked on her. Since Noel is Saya his attitude toward her counts as well.
  • Big Brother Instinct: It took him in Central Fiction to become this for Noel/Saya. See Pet the Dog below.
  • Big Brother Worship: Deconstructed, he wholeheartedly adores his older brother, Ragna. When Jin was a little boy, he was very dependent Ragna for affection and constantly pestered him to play with him. He saw his sister Saya as an obstacle of getting his brother’s attention and constantly bullied her in retaliation. Eventually, Ragna decided to look after the sickly Saya and distanced himself from Jin, he grew jealous of the relationship Ragna and Saya shared, and eventually attempted to kill her, immediately after Saya gave him the Event Weapon, Yukianesa. Thankfully, by the time they reached adulthood, deep inside he still kinda admires his big brother in his own way, that is.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • When he saves Makoto from Hazama by parrying his attack, freezing him solid, and then carrying Makoto off to safety. All this while he is still afflicted with heavy injuries.
    • When Luna and Sena are about to disappear he appears and uses the Power of Order to stabilize their existences.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Even after being adopted. His adopted siblings in the Kisaragi Family hate and distrust him because of their jealousy towards his accomplishments.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Says this when resisting Yukianesa, even to the point of saying it at least three times in a row.
  • Blade Spam: His Sekkajin special.
  • Blessed with Suck: Jin's Power of Order is a double-edged sword. Whilst everyone in the restored world is their pre-Doomsday selves, Jin's Power of Order makes him unable to be reverted to his pre-Doomsday self, thus losing his fighting ability by the end as per the deal with Trinity in an attempt to save his life from a transformed Ragna back in the end of CP.
  • Blood Knight: Only around Ragna though. He gets more than a little happy at the thought of fighting him.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Downplayed; he wears blue, is hailed as "Hero of Ikaruga" and becomes more heroic after his Character Development. Doesn't mean he has to be nice, though.
  • Brainwashed: It's revealed that Terumi is the one who possessed him when he burned down the church and cut Ragna's arm off.
  • Break the Cutie: Let's see, getting brainwashed by Terumi into killing his adoptive family. Then in the Kisaragi family, the siblings there who were supposed to love him and care for him turned out to be a bunch of envious dickheads who emotionally abused him for God knows how long. And then they decided to go further by sending assassins to kill the poor young man because they felt that he doesn't deserve the achievements that he legitimately earned.
  • Broken Ace: Handsome, smart, strong, rich, highly ranked, popular with girls despite his cold attitude, a hero for ending a long civil war, and so on. As he put it himself, he was showered with everything men would kill for. But deep inside, Jin is a horribly-broken young man without any sense of purpose because he was manipulated by forces out of his control for all his life. Also, his household name, the Kisaragis, only exploited Jin for their own gain and hardly cared about him as an individual. Jin said he was more like a tool who did what he was told than an actual member of the family, especially since most of them actually resented him for his achievements and status. And this is after he lost his first family in a fire and most of his memories of the event. He's a major jerk throughout the series, but experiences like those can more than justify why he is the way he is.
  • Broken Bird: See Dark and Troubled Past and Troubled, but Cute for more details.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: His reaction to Bang's one-sided vendetta. Though its more because he can't remember the events due to Terumi eating his memories.
  • But Not Too Foreign: As shown in CF, he, Saya/Noel, and Ragna are the children of the 5th Prime Field Device, who is implied to be based off of Saya Terumi, who is Japanese. This also applies to Lambda-11, Mu-12, and Nu-13.
  • Button Mashing: Sekkajin (mash C) in Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift. In a subversion, merely button mashing won't make the move actually be one of Jin's combo option, there is a time frame where Jin can stop and leaving the enemy vulnerable while floating a bit, for combo options. The input was changed in Chrono Phantasma to remove this though, being replaced with a simple Down-Down-C input.
  • Byronic Hero: Jin is extremely attractive, calm, intelligent, a Chick Magnet, and is considered a Hero by many for ending the Ikaruga Civil War. But, is very much deeply troubled inside because of his Dark and Troubled Past and the fact that he is a Sociopathic Hero who will not hesitate to hurt anyone who stands in his way.
    C - G
  • Cain and Abel: With Ragna. Due to complicated reasons, he always has the urge to try to kill him whenever they get close to each other. Even after becoming more sane in the end of CS, this doesn't change.
  • The Cape: In contrast to Ragna's cowl, though a rather dark one.
  • Catchphrase: "You are...MY ENEMY!" When facing those who threaten the world and trigger the Power of Order.
  • Celibate Hero: Despite how obviously he cares about Tsubaki, he doesn't really express any actual romantic attraction towards her, or any other woman for that matter. Although this is somewhat justified, considering what the hell is currently going on, it's not really the best time to be acting on your feelings when there are more important things at stake. Though his other self Hakumen did have feelings for Tsubaki.
    • Played straight by the end of Central Fiction. It seems that, in the end, he never considered getting together with a woman (not even Tsubaki) and since his memories of Ragna are now non-existent, it further drives this point home, even more. It is highly likely he is now Married to the Job when he returned in service to the NOL.
  • Character Development: Like his brother Ragna, Jin has also done a lot of growing through the series. Originally concerned only with his selfish desire to kill Ragna and caring less about the world around him, he eventually began to embrace his destiny as the keeper of order in the world and fights to restore it to its natural state. By the end of Continuum Shift, after finally managing to resist Yukianesa's influence, he is significantly more mellow. Even Jubei comments that he "sure has grown." Even more in Central Fiction where where it is shown that Jin no longer acts obsessively towards Ragna, referring to him as “The Dark One” not unlike Hakumen. Jin seems to have become more like Hakumen, taking on an overall calm yet stern tone of voice. In the near end of the game, Jin is confident when he wears the Susanoo unit using Trinity’s magic to become Hakumen until she diffuses with her magic to not let him unable to stop Ragna from fighting his sister. But deep down however, he does seem to care for his siblings as a sign of his maturity.
  • Character Shilling: By the game itself, no less! The games always constantly reminds you that Jin is the youngest and most famous Hero in the world of BlazBlue, with countless accomplishments under his belt and that he also excels as a Leader. In the Remix Heart manga, back in the Military Academy, Makoto and Tsubaki always makes sure to remind the readers and the main character, Mai Natsume, that Jin is the Student Council President, is always at the top of his class, always wins major events inside the Academy, is a Chick Magnet, and that everyone loves and admires him.
    • Also invoked and deconstruction by Terumi. Jin's data inside the NOL is overloaded with praise and admiration regarding his achievements in order to further his own plans to easily manipulate him later on (because he needs a Propaganda Hero to act as a figurehead model within the NOL to avoid anyone's suspicions). Obviously even Jin, being someone who dislikes achievements being given to him on a silver platter (see Everyone Has Standards below), lampshades the fact that his profile is over-exaggerated and ridiculous. And he really, really doesn't like that.
  • The Charmer: Despite having some sociopathic qualities, Jin is extremely charismatic whenever he is in a pleasant mood. These traits are most likely the reason why he was voted as Student Council President (twice, in fact) in his Academy days and is highly-admired by people around him (those who don't know about his hidden issues). Thankfully, he doesn't use this quality of his to maliciously manipulate people and mess with their heads.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: When he first meets Jubei in the second game, the latter tells him about the Power of Order, but Jin dismisses him. Then after Valkenhayn's little "treatment" on him and his botched fight with Ragna, he starts to realize what the Power of Order is.
  • The Chessmaster: It isn't shown very blatantly, but he does a very amazing plan to save Tsubaki (even if it means that he dies in the process). First, he plans to weaken her by sending in Makoto to fight with her because of her higher physical combat abilities. Then send Noel in to Observe the Izayoi's true form, then ordered her to back out immediately after that (because now Izayoi can use the Immortal Breaker and can one-shot kill Noel, if given the chance). In the end, he steps in to tank the Immortal Breaker hoping to finally snap her out of her brainwashing. It worked wonderfully well, thanks to Jin's Power of Order in which Death cannot be implanted on his mind.
  • Chick Magnet: His looks have not gone unnoticed. Obviously there's Tsubaki, Makoto calls him hot in their days at the Military Academy, and one chapter of Remix Heart had him be declared Izanaginote  with many female students vying for the Izanaminote  title to be closer to him.
  • Childhood Friends: With Tsubaki. They first meet together during a monthly meeting between the leaders of the Duodecim in their younger years, and they became close friends ever since.
  • Child Prodigy: Despite being adopted into a noble and prestigious family with many "siblings", Jin has been appointed the first in-line to inherit the House of the Kisaragi Family because of his outstanding talents. He's earned every one of his accolades, including a promotion to major due to his accomplishments in the war against the nation of Ikaruga.
  • Clothing Combat: His midair B attack is him spinning around, smacking his foe with his loose sleeves.
  • Combination Attack: In the climax of CP, he and Hakumen use their Yukikaze to cut down the Monolith.
  • The Comically Serious: Graduates to this as the series goes on as his mostly unflappable attitude contrasts greatly with everyone else's extroverted personalities.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: If you consider BlazBlue the Creator-Driven Successor invokedto Guilty Gear, Jin is quite a contrast to Ky Kiske. Ky is a rather straight example of a Knight in Shining Armor being chivalrous and all around morally upright, if somewhat naïve despite the Crapsack World he lives in, and somewhat religious. Jin is more of a Knight in Sour Armor by comparison, essentially an atheist, and barely holds his contempt for everything around him and is pretty nihilistic on top of it all.
  • Cool Big Bro: In Jin's Military Academy Days, he behaves like this towards his group with Tsubaki, Noel, Makoto and Carl.
  • Cool Sword: Literally. His Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa is a katana with a blade made of pure ice, with a hilt that compresses it to keep it cool.
  • Counter-Attack: Kokuujin: Yukikaze/Empty Sky Form: Winter's Riposte (Empty Air Blade: Snowy Wind) from Continuum Shift onward. Not surprising it shares its name with Hakumen's.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: He is this for Ky Kiske. Both are blonde Bishōnen deuteragonists who wear blue, have a rivalry with the Dark Is Not Evil red-wearing transforming One-Handed Zweihänder-wielding protagonist, and are the figureheads of their respective governments (United Kingdoms of Illyria for Ky, NOL for Jin). But whereas Ky is an all-around Nice Guy and potentially a Knight in Shining Armor and Ideal Hero, Jin is a selfish, sociopathic, nihilistic jerk and Smug Snake borderling on Villain Protagonist who cares very little for people other than himself. While Ky prefers to have things settled peacefully (even if it comes at his detriment) unless his hand is forced, Jin often loses it and goes Ax-Crazy (particularly when near Ragna or Noel). Even Ky's loving relationship with a nonhuman MacGuffin Girl known as Dizzy stands in stark contrast with Jin's hateful and abusive relationship with Dizzy's counterpart Noel Vermillion.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: During Jin's visit to Ronin-Gai in his arcade mode in CT, he was found by Bang Shishigami, and a horde of his followers came from hiding, challenging Jin to a fight out of vengence for his Master. Jin claims to be unaware of such event, and does not even remember Bang's face, which angers him, and his followers greatly. Bang tells his followers to stay on standby, as he proceeded to fight Jin alone. Jin makes quick work of the enthusiastic ninja, defeating him with ease. As his subordinates shouted at the Major with aggression, Jin paid them attention, and continued with his travels.
    • Going for Bang's Bad Ending in CS? Just don't expect Jin to put up much of a fight, being unable to use C or D-attacks and specials.
    • Flip-flopped for his fight with a brainwashed Tsubaki in CS. He starts at a disadvantage because Yukianesa won't respond to his commands, but when he forcibly activates it, Tsubaki is on the receiving end.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Jin is a wielder of the "Power of Order", and deemed as the "World's Antibody." Yet because of this, he has been subjected as an Unwitting Pawn by Hazama particularly in the Ikaruga Civil War where he killed Tenjo. Also, take note that Jin is not even aware of this power until recently. Sure, he was a hero after the war, but Bang claimed he was a murderer.
  • Cryonics Failure: His ice powers all enable this, with his Astral being the clearest example thereof.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Jin in CP has A LOT of his movement either omitted or having different inputs and/or properties compared to the previous iterations (like Sekkajin no longer being a Button Mashing move, or the infamous Ice Car just hitting once instead twice (you have to press another button to initiate the SECOND attack) and only has TWO variants including the Heat-cost attack and can't be done airborne...)
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jin pretty much had a shitty life on the same level as his older brother, Ragna. He was brainwashed to murder his own family by Terumi and then ate his memory of the whole event. So, he was left to wander the world, alone, without remembering anything until he was adopted by the Kisaragi family. You could be forgiven for thinking he could start a whole new life with a second family. But no, this family turns out to be composed of a bunch of assholes who mentally and emotionally tortured him for many long years and even hired countless assassins in order to dispose of him because they're envious of the constant successes, talents, and accomplishments he genuinely earned himself without any help from any of them. It didn't get any better later on. Because when he gets sent off to the Ikaruga Civil War just after he graduated in the Academy, his memory of the whole event was eaten away again by the bastard, Terumi, because He Knows Too Much. And so, he became a Hero that we all know today but didn't know why or how he became that in the first place making him lost and confused once again. Let's face it; any human with experiences like those can turn anyone into a sociopathic, disturbingly-broken shell of a human-being. Goddamnit, Terumi!
  • Dating Catwoman: Jin still has feelings for Tsubaki, even after she has undergone a brainwashing-induced Face–Heel Turn. Of course, turning her good is part of his mission in the third game.
  • Deal with the Devil: Played with. Sometime before Central Fiction arcade Act 1 and the main story mode's prologue, Trinity makes him a new, temporary body for him to survive the near fatal wounds he received from the berserk Ragna at the end of Chrono Phantasma and to move around again. In exchange he lets her use Yukianesa as a vessel after she was separated from Muchorin, and to carry her to Platinum and Jubei. Jin directly calls the situation an example of this trope by name, which Trinity isn't happy about since she's entirely benevolent. Although she does tell him that he won't be able to ever wield a sword or use Ars Magus anymore once he's used up his body's strength, and she also says that the whole deal sounds not exactly fair and apologizes for it (but Jin accepted anyways).
  • Deadpan Snarker: Just like Rachel. But even more extreme.
    • Tsubaki in shock of Jin's defection from the Library
Tsubaki: "I can't believe someone as loyal as you would... Would defect. Why?"
Jin: "Why? You know how to ask the most important question, don't you? Well Tsubaki, allow me to enlighten you. I did it because those were my orders. Is that not what a soldier is supposed to do?"
    • Bang giving some lecture to an injured Jin inside Ronin-Gai
Bang: "However, a true warrior, will never leave an injured man to die."
Jin: "Your idiocy is truly astounding. There is only one goal in war, and that is victory."
    • Jin walking with Makoto in Ronin-Gai
Makoto: "Wow, look at them go! It's so peaceful."
Jin: "Noisy would be much more accurate."
Makoto: "Do you always have to be so cynical?"
  • Death Seeker: Jin doesn't really put much value in his life, to say the least. It definitely shows how lonely and hopeless he is inside his cold-hard exterior. When he was about to save Tsubaki from her brainwashing in Chrono Phantasma, he is fully willing to die doing so and considers his life a cheap price to pay. Thankfully, the Power of Order technically makes him an Immortal, so he definitely won't have it no matter how much he wants to.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Jin deconstructs the Annoying Younger Sibling and I Just Want to Be Special. The lad always wanted to become someone special for his brother, Ragna, a 'hero' or something. Signs of this are already shown in the past that when his normally beloved (but occasionally bullied) sister Saya got sick and Ragna had to give extra attention to her, Jin started getting jealous and began intensifying his bullying, and when there's this weird green stranger who offers to make him a 'hero' to save his brother, Jin jumps in without question. Said 'weird green stranger' turns out to be an utterly malicious troll who possesses him, cuts off his brother's arm and burns the orphanage, then erases his memory and leaves for the Kisaragi household. While he became a hard-working son, the family never trusted him because of his adoption and when he's sent to the fields of war, he couldn't remember a thing and all of the sudden, he's given a shitload of hero's honors, not realizing that it was also the malicious Troll's plan to more easily use him and it results in Jin himself becoming something of a mentally dead person walking, with people referring him as 'false hero'. And, when his brother comes back, all he gets to hear is "You killed our sister, bastard!". So much for 'special'... Thankfully, he is taking steps to gather the deconstructed pieces and try to reconstruct them anew as of late.
  • De-power:
    • He's unable to use Yukianesa after Valkenhayn's little "treatment" for him in his CS story mode. What Valkenhayn did was suppressing Yukianesa's influence on him, making him unable to use it; this is so that he can learn to force Yukianesa to work using his Power of Order.
    • Apparently, due to the deal with Trinity, Jin eventually loses his ability to fight by the epilogue of CF.
  • Determinator:
    • In Continuum Shift, Jin is the walking wounded courtesy of Ragna, yet he protects Makoto from Hazama, receiving further injuries, holds his own against Unlimited Rachel despite barely being able to move, receives an extremely painful healing treatment from Valkenhayn that not even Jubei would be able to handle, then gets beaten by Ragna while he's unable to use his sword (though Ragna held back), proceeds to get into a fun little love tiff with Tsubaki (read: she's trying to kill him), fights well enough to scare Hazama into a retreat, fights the incredibly powerful magic user Phantom - who can take out Rachel without sweating - off-screen and apparently wins, and since that's not nearly enough, he tells Hakumen to go away so he can challenge Mu all by himself. Clearly, he's switched one form of insanity for another.
    • If Hazama loses to Jin in his Story Path, it's revealed that this is actually a superpower for Jin. According to Kokonoe, the Power of Order gives him such extreme Heroic Willpower that he can "deflect phenomena intervention through sheer force of will."
  • Deuteragonist: The other big part of the story, aside from Ragna's growth, focuses on him becoming a true hero.
  • Dismotivation: The Wheel of Fortune reveals that he often neglects reading important documents that come his way, skips meetings and disappears without notice. See Kicked Upstairs below for why.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": His response to Noel calling him "Jin-niisama" instead of "Major Kisaragi" in Central Fiction. Justified that he hasn't gotten used to the fact that Saya, the younger sister he's been despising ever since as a child has finally returned through Noel. Ragna said it's fine; after all, they're siblings. Jin retorts that it's not, but Ragna tells him that he'll eventually get used to it, in which he is right when Jin doesn't say the trope again the next time Noel calls him "Jin-niisama" when he defended her from Ragna attempting to strike her down in order to erase himself from her memories.
  • The Dreaded: Up there high in the food chain as one of the most powerful characters in the series and only topped by a few characters. There's a perfectly good reason why he is hailed as a Hero and the secondary male protagonist of the whole series.
  • Driven by Envy: Jin's hateful and abusive treatment towards Noel stems from Ragna focusing his attention on Saya (as Noel physically resembles her) since she fell ill at the expense of him. Such sentiments also extent to anyone else who even looks like her (like Nu and Lambda).
  • Emotion Control: It is heavily implied that the more Jin is in control of his emotions, the stronger he gets. That is how he unlocked his Power of Order.
  • Escaped from the Lab: He, along with his siblings, was rescued from an unknown lab by Jubei and then was brought to Celica's custody.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Loved by Tsubaki. Oggled by Makoto. Desired by countless, frothing female admirers in the Military Academy and possibly within the Novus Orbis Librarium, as well. Flirted on by Amane. Adored by and has a lot of Ho Yay moments with Taro. And the object of Nago's lust.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In Act 2 of Central Fiction's Arcade mode, Jin shows there are some lines even he won't cross. Namely, he is vehemently against Hakumen's plan to use Tsubaki and the Izayoi to eliminate Noel and restore the world to normal, because he knows Tsubaki couldn't bear the burden to do it to a friend of hers, and more so against his A Million Is a Statistic attitude claiming there's no point in saving a world where you have to sacrifice the people in it. It's a true testament to his Character Development given how he's never displayed such an attitude before. Especially ironic given who Hakumen is.
    • Jin might also be a selfish person sometimes but it seems that he isn't fond of privileges being given to him on a silver platter. He prefers to earn his achievements, fair and square, showing that he also has a high sense of honor. This is likely the reason why he doesn't like being labeled as the "Hero of Ikaruga" as it was shown that Terumi just used him in the Ikaruga Civil War to end it quickly and to show the NOL's might. But, he had no idea of that until recently thanks to Terumi taking away his memories of his involvement because He Knows Too Much.
  • Evil Brit: Was born in England, according to Word of God, and therefore fits both of these tropes perfectly. Not that you'd know from the game, especially since David Vincent doesn't use the accent. He does shed the evil part post-CS though.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Back when he was a villain, he cannot fathom why Bang would not take the opportunity to kill him in his weakened state, and even show him hospitality. Keep in mind that Jin was the one responsible for bringing Bang's home country of Ikaruga to ruin, and even slayed his master in front of his eyes.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: At least until Character Development kicked in.
  • Evil Vegetarian: He doesn't like meat dishes. Even after Character Development, he retains his dislike towards meat dishes. It is referenced in one Help Me, Miss Litchi segment and for one of Chronophantasma's joke endings; in the former, Noel and Hazama comment on wanting to catch Jin actually eating a meat bun at some point (Jin was about to eat one before getting attacked and dragged by Tao). In the latter, Jin expresses himself that he is unable to eat meat for certain yet-unexplained reasons. Apparenly, Word of God explains that it's because he and Ragna are brothers.
  • Evil Weapon: Before he subjugates it, Yukianesa would inflict fits of madness upon Jin in order for him to do its bidding. That "bidding" being killing the Black Beast, as that's what Nox Nyctores like Yukianesa are created to do; the weapon also believed that Ragna is kind of like the Black Beast (which isn't wrong in a way), which explains Jin's murderous intent towards his brother whenever he wields it.
  • EX Special Attack: His Drive enhances his special attacks to freeze his opponents at the cost of 25% of his Heat.
  • Face Palm: He does this when he loses due to Time Up.
  • Fallen Hero: Thankfully Character Development help makes this a reconstructed trope and he heads down the path towards being a true (if unpleasant) hero.
  • Fatal Flaw: His arrogance, self-centered attitude, and obsession with Ragna have costed him greatly and were the primary causes of starting his path towards becoming Hakumen. Fortunately, he learns his lesson sooner than Hakumen, which allows him to save Tsubaki from herself and start down the path towards making a difference in the Crapsack World.
  • Female Gaze: The Cover Art of "Spiral Shift" has a notice-able sneak-peak focus on his (surprisingly) muscular biceps and a part his chest.
  • Foil: Ragna and Jin contrast each other in almost every way.
    • While Ragna is sardonic, rude, abrasive, quick to anger, stubborn, and never misses a chance to use as much vulgar language as possible Jin is apathetic, cold, distant, and aloof, barely showing any emotion to anyone and overall being borderline sociopathic.
    • Ragna is understanding of the younger cast, and has been seen playing with the Kaka Kittens, as well as going along with Tao's eccentric behaviour while Jin cares little for the feelings of others, and denounces, in his own words, trivialities like camaraderie, believing that such things are lies that people use to their advantage.
    • Ragna seems to disdain killing, sparing Arakune’s life due to Litchi’s pleasnote  where as Jin has no compunction with killing anyone who gets in the way of his goal.
    • This extends to their fighting styles as well. While Ragna fights with savage, powerful blows, Jin’s style is elegant-if-not just as hard-hitting as Ragna’s with a focus on more precise attacks, which strangely polarizes his own personality affected by Yukianesa.
  • Force and Finesse: He strikes with elegant sword strikes and skillful use of his ice powers, in contrast to Ragna who's more of a reckless brawler with his Soul Eater powers backing it up. This also contrasts him with Hakumen. Jin is again the finesse, while Hakumen has more raw power and relies on his defenses.
  • Foreshadowing: He's mentioned to have high Ars Magus aptitude. CF reveals that he was the one of the children of the 5th Prime Field Device, who has a special ability of infinitely amplifying seithr around her; suffice to say said ability is passed down to him.
  • Fragile Speedster: Averted. Jin is definitely one of the fastest characters in the game, but he also has average health as well as defense, and his damage output is the same as Ragna's (who is a Glass Cannon). Jin can outright become a Lightning Bruiser on a skilled player's hands.
  • Freudian Excuse: See Dark and Troubled Past above for a more bone-chilling explanation. Pretty much all of the unpleasant aspects in his personality can be traced to traumas that have been going on since his childhood, from Ragna focusing everything on Saya at the expense of him when she fell ill, to Terumi's attack on the church and him eating away Jin's memories of it, to his treatment by the rest of the Kisaragi family as well as others when he was adopted into it, to being railroaded into fighting in the Ikaruga War and having his memories of his involvment get eaten by Terumi again because He Knows Too Much, only served to re-enforce the twisted lesson Jin learned from all of this namely: "If everybody is going to reject me, I may as well reject them."
  • Future Me Scares Me: With Japanese voices switched on, Jin is audibly freaking out at the start of a match against Hakumen. Continuum Shift takes this up a step further when Hakumen faces Jin in his Arcade Mode path.
  • Giggling Villain: When around Ragna. The now legendary "Help me, Professor Kokonoe!" episode had him let out such a high pitched giggle (followed by an even higher pitched "Nii-san~") that it's barely recognizable as the same person.
  • The Glasses Come Off: He got rid of the glasses after his Academy days.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Starting from CS he starts becoming good and keeps mellowing gradually after that, but he still has his issues in dealing with his potential allies, especially Noel.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He's envious of Ragna and Noel and he has literally green eyes to boot.
  • Guest Fighter: In Lost Saga.
    H - L
  • Hair Flip: In one of his win pose.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Jin's not exactly better than his brother in this department.
  • Handicapped Badass: He starts off as being halfway recovered from his injuries in his CS story, but as he faces other characters - even Unlimited ones! - he still manages to hold his own.
    • In CF, Izayoi notes that his injuries from CP (where he's got beaten to critical health by berserk Ragna) is still not fully healed yet, but he assures her that it's not a problem.
  • Harmless Freezing: The freezing properties of his weapon doesn't really hurt, what hurts is the actual attack that gives the effect. Averted in his Astral Heat, however, in that he KO's the opponent by cranking up his freezing.
  • Hate at First Sight: Hates Noel with a passion, even though they spend most of the story as (supposed) allies. Because he recognizes her as a clone of Saya. This is also shown in Remix Heart where he gives a mean look towards Noel the first time they meet each other. Though the third game makes him less hostile towards Noel. Keyword being less. He still insults and demeans her every chance he gets, but he no longer expresses a desire to murder her for the slightest infraction. As of Central Fiction he found out that Noel is the "cause" of the distortion in the Embryo because she's the superior Entitled and thus he's got a reason to try to kill her this time, this was something that never made it into the story mode proper however.
  • Healing Hands: In The Wheel of Fortune drama CD, it was revealed that Jin can use healing ars. Which he tries to use on Tsubaki after her Heroic Sacrifice. Sadly, he couldn't use it properly at that time due to his mind's state of panic.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: he was a Face as a kid, but turned into Heel when Terumi possessed him. As years go by, he's a Face, but turned into a Heel in the aftermath of the Ikaruga War. After the events of CS, he's Face once again.
  • He Knows Too Much: This was why Terumi ate his memories of his involvement in the Ikaruga War: Jin knew the whole thing was set up by the NOL, and pointing this out would mean exposing him
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Being the Hero of Ikaruga and the Deuteragonist of the game, he also wields swords. In this case, a Katana named Yukianesa, which contrasts with Ragna's bulky BFS.
  • Heroic Build: The Spiral Shift novel shows that underneath that uniform, Jin is extremely ripped to kingdom come! He has a more leaner build later on with less muscles but could possibly be explained by the fact that he got out of practice a lot due to being promoted to simple desk work inside his office rather than actively participating in battles.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being a model student and later hailed as a war hero, he sees little value in them, and is more obsessed in fighting Ragna. Justified in that he knows that his family treats him more like a tool and are envious of him, and he dislikes being called a "hero" after what he saw in the Ikaruga War.
Jin: A hero who is nominated by people is not a true hero.
  • Heroic Willpower: Basically what The Power of Order is. If Jin is determined enough, he can basically shrug off all of the time travel foolery going on and even shrug off a weapon designed to kill immortals.
  • The Hero's Journey: His story arc starting from Calamity Trigger all the way up to Central Fiction is basically him bulldozing through all manner of bullshittery in a Crapsack World in order to become a true hero.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Jin really doesn't like to show people (barring Tsubaki) his kinder side. One notable example is in Chronophantasma when after Arakune attacks Noel in her room, he shows up after all of the commotion is over and out of anyone's sight. He's caught in the act and tries to play it off as I Was Just Passing Through of course.
    • In Chrono Phantasma EXTEND's version of Remix Heart, he also seemed to care about Mai and Kajun enough to save and protect them from a hostile security system of one of the NOL Military Academy's buildings. When he then issues the team a punishment on cleaning the dorm's rooms after the holiday ends (because they aren't supposed to enter the building), he also includes himself in the punishment because he claims that he also sneaks into the building; Mai suspects that he's just being nice while masking it.
    • In the same scenario, Kajun also states that he would nor admit it but she feels she knows why Jin issues them the punishment to which Mai stated that Kajun was going to make her own detergent. Also heavily implying that he probably just wants to spend time with them.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In Bang's Story Mode, one path has Yukianesa freeze him.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: While he's straight (especially for Tsubaki), the developers evidently have too much fun making jokes out of his creepy obsession for killing Ragna, turning it into this, particularly in gag reels.
  • Human Popsicle: His Drive moves, D versions of his specials, and some of his Distortion Drives can freeze the opponent solid, leaving them open to attacks.
  • An Ice Person: Jin controls the element of ice, wielding it with such efficiency that he is able to shape the ice he creates into different forms such as a series of blades and is able to propel himself on one. His control over Yukianesa's ice-related abilities allows him to create and shape water in the air and crystallize it, giving birth to a myriad of techniques. Some of the objects that Jin can create include swords of varying sizes, arrows, and beams of ice. His mere presence creates snowflakes in the air, and his Drive is Frost Bite, whre, by harnessing the power of Yukianesa, Jin can encase his opponents in structures of ice, temporarily incapacitating them for a free hit.
  • If I Can't Have You…: A non-romantic example, Jin saw Saya as an obstacle of getting Ragna’s attention and constantly bullied her in retaliation. Eventually, Ragna decided to look after the sickly Saya and distanced himself from Jin, he grew jealous of the relationship Ragna and Saya shared, and eventually attempted to kill her.
  • I Gave My Word: His deal with Trinity, in a nutshell in Central Fiction. He stated that he did not want to be involved with Luna and Sena but saved them anyways because he made a deal with her.
  • I Have Many Names: Well, not that many, but he does have some notable one's like, "The Anti-Body", "The False Hero", "The End Bringer", but the most notable is "The Hero of Ikaruga" or just plain "(Mr.)Hero."
  • Immortality: As a wielder of the Power of Order, he cannot die as long as his will is intact. He even let himself be stabbed by the Immortal Breaker (yes, it literally ''breaks'' and ''kills'' immortal beings) and it failed to work on him. Take note that this a weapon that is specifically said to be able to easily kill Rachel or Noel without effort.
  • Improbable Age: He successfully ended the Ikaruga Civil War and was promoted to Major shortly after graduating from the Academy, which would put him in his late teens at the time.
  • Improbable Weapon: The long sleeves on the sides of his clothing can apparently increase in size and can be used to put on a world of hurt against opponents.
  • Incest Subtext: The Gag reels just make it straight up text, with Ragna. His theme isn't titled "Lust SIN" for nothing.
  • Ineffectual Loner: According to his Material Collection Information, one of the things he likes is even "Being left alone". True to form, he realizes that there are some things he can't accomplish by himself and willingly works with others as the series goes on. That said, he is not a downright "Introvert" as he has been shown to have a lot of friends back in the Military Academy.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: As highlighted under Freudian Excuse, Jin's attitude and abrasiveness are a psychological coverup for his self-esteem issues.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Jinny the Kisaragi"note  or simply "Jinny", which is hilariously made up by Tsubaki in their childhood days. Apparently, Jin doesn't like it and he scolded her for it.
    • In the original Japanese, Tsubaki instead calls him "nii-sama", a respectful word for one's brother which she continues to use as they get older. Jin doesn't seem to find it quite so embarrassing (at least if she does it out of formal occasions), even though they're not actually related.
    • In Remix Heart, one of the members of his student council, Taro calls him "Jinjin." Kagura (Taro's relative) later mocks Jin with it.
  • Irony: His Nox Nyctores - Yukianesa is clearly a weapon that continuously puts a strain on his mind. Also, it is given to him by Saya — whom he pretty much despises. Yet, he clearly refuses to get rid of the said weapon and continues to use it.
    • Even more is two of his moves; in Japanese and English, they have a moon-naming motif along with his surname, and Jin himself despises the moon.
  • It's All About Me: Jin is a very self-centered person and pretty much only cares for himself. Thankfully, he's not a full-on selfish person as he was shown to care for the people he's very close to such as risking his life to save either Tsubaki, Makoto, Mai, or Kajun.
  • It's Personal:
    • In CP, he agrees to join Kagura's group for his planned coup d'etat after Kagura promises that they can help him save Tsubaki.
    • In Variable Heart, he meets Meifang under Kagura's orders to capture/defeat her, but he's also personally mad at her because she once killed his comrades in the Ikaruga Civil War.
  • Jack of All Stats: Jin's greatest attribute, he can be played reasonably well from anywhere on screen despite not excelling as well as other characters. Which is why is he good for beginners. Also being an expy to Ky this was inevitable.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He tolerates people at best, and is scathingly condescending at worst. It's implied that he wasn't quite an ass before the Ikaruga Warnote , and as shown in Wheel of Fortune he, while still cold, is much nicer (especially towards Tsubaki). Post-CS, Jin is very deep down, a caring young man towards those he doesn't hold any deeper feelings of resentment. After the second game, he actively works for the betterment of the world. He sure as hell doesn't like to show it though. Lampshaded by Noel in Chronophantasma.
Noel: I think maybe Major Kisaragi's changed a bit. He still says a lot of awful things, but I got the feeling he was concerned. I'm sure it's for Tsubaki, but still...
  • Karma Houdini: He often avoids a slap on the wrist for his poor treatment of Noel. He's seldom, if ever, called out by others for his treatment of her.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Prior to his desertion, Jin's life consisted of naught but meetings and mountains of paperwork. Jin makes no effort to hide his dissatisfaction with the monotony. Considering Hazama's manipulation of Jin during the Ikaruga Civil War for reasons unknown, his use of Jin as a roadblock for Ragna, and the likely implication that Jin's post was back at NOL Headquarters in the 1st Hierarchical City, the lack of action on Jin's part is a deliberate setup.
  • Kick the Dog: He hates Noel and never wastes an opportunity to insult and belittle her. In his CS joke ending, he calls her "trash", "garbage", and "compost" that can't do anything right. And it's hilarious. Although Chronophantasma makes him less hostile towards her.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: For Tsubaki, to the extent that he'd give his own life to help her and think nothing of it. Eventually, as the series goes on, Jin was shown to protect people he cares about like the time when he saved Mai and Kajun.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Post-Character Development. He's still the same nihilistic jackass he's always been, but he's at least fighting for a righteous cause now.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia:
    • There are pretty specific parts of history that he can't remember. Those being the circumstances of him wounding young Ragna and the tragedy at the church in general (he only remembered someone telling him to attack Ragna because "he's evil"), and also the circumstances of his part in Ikaruga War.
    • In CF, he also stated that his memories as the Power of Order has become altered, if not erased, during his fight with berserked Ragna. Noel pointed out that the Power of Order can't be easily be trumped like that, but then he says that something unusual likely from within Ragna must've happened.
  • Laughing Mad: Does this a lot around Ragna and anyone close to Ragna. He does start shedding it, albeit slowly.
  • The Leader: During his academy days, he's this towards Noel, Makoto, and Tsubaki, as well as being the Student Council President. Hell, in Chronophantasma, he is this to Noel and Makoto in their plan to save Tsubaki together.
  • Lean and Mean: He's got a tall, slim build and is an asshole, though the latter is toned down over time.
  • Leitmotif: "Lust SIN", depicting his cold as ice attitude as well as his obsession with killing Ragna. The Chronophantasma remix, "Lust SIN II", however gives it far more heroic feeling, which describes how Jin has grown from his old days.
  • Light Is Not Good: As a contrast to Ragna's Dark Is Not Evil nature, Jin dresses in bright colors, has blond hair, is celebrated as the "Hero of Ikaruga", and is a Bishōnen. He's also an enormous jerk. This is inverted later by his Heel–Face Turn, where he doesn't become a straight example of Light Is Good, but is probably getting there.
  • Limited Wardrobe: In Chronophantasma, despite no longer part of the NOL, he still wears his uniform. Word of God states that it's because he just doesn't give a damn about it.
    • Averted by the end of Central Fiction. By the end of the series, he no longer wears his old uniform, but instead, now wears a formal version of the NOL's usual outfit but with a Badass Cape to go along with it.
  • Living Legend: During the Ikaruga Civil War, Jin decided to take care of the leader of Ikaruga, Tenjō Amanohokosaka, as he believed it would stop the war. When he arrived at the Wadatsumi castle, one of the Amanohokosaka’s disciples, the leader of Ikaruga ninjas tried to stop Kisaragi, but he failed. However, he wasn’t killed, but left with a cross-shaped scar on his face. Eventually, Jin Kisaragi killed Tenjō Amanohokosaka, and then the Ikaruga people stopped fighting. This was the end of the war, and Jin earns the title of the Hero of Ikaruga.
  • Living Macguffin: In Remix Heart, it is stated by Shiori that countless number of assassins outside of the Kirihito family have been sent to dispose of Jin before, but all of them failed due to the constant interference of Taro. What exactly is the reason for their vendetta against Jin is currently unknown.
  • Loved by All: In contrast to Ragna being Hated by All due to him being seen as an SS Criminal, Jin is a Living Legend in the world of BlazBlue as "The Hero of Ikaruga" and people sing his praises all around the world. In his days in the Military Academy, he is also the charismatic Student Council President who is a Chick Magnet and is beloved and admired by all. He still retains this present-day by the end of the series in Central Fiction as he is still regarded as the folk hero of the world again in contrast to Ragna's who is now forever remembered as the same wanted criminal and "The Enemy of the World".
  • Lust: His musical theme, "Lust SIN". Plus, his whole obsession with Ragna (mixed in with greed).
    M - R
  • Made of Iron: He can take a surprising amount of punishment, especially considering unlike his brother or Noel, he has no supernatural enhancements whatsoever (at least, none that directly affects his body).
  • Magic Knight: He's both an excellent swordsman and an adept ars magus user, which reflects in his Jack of All Stats playstyle.
  • Magikarp Power: Being the "Hero of Ikaruga", Jin is far from being weak. But in Calamity Trigger, he is weaker than Ragna or Hakumen due to his Evil Weapon, Yukianesa. But, when he overcame the weapon's corrupting influence, he became one of the most powerful characters in the game with very few characters able to match him. It's not for naught when Jubei himself says that Jin would become Ragna's "Greatest Enemy" when he succeeds in breaking himself off from Yukianesa's brainwashing.
  • Magnetic Hero: Jin is indeed the most famous Hero in the world of BlazBlue. Despite his emotional problems and general indifference because of Terumi's machinations, he ended up gaining True Companions back in the Military Academy, and these people are still sticking by his side to this day. In fact, in "Remix Heart", Shiori, the girl who's hired by dickheads from the Kisaragi family find it very, VERY difficult to kill him on the spot because of his thick wall of loyal friends including the Protagonist, Mai.
  • Majorly Awesome: His rank is "Major" in the NOL, and he got it at such a young age for being such a badass. He lost this rank after he defected. Still a badass, though.
  • Manly Tears: He cries while embracing Ragna when he realises that his brother is about to cease to exist.
  • Meaningful Name: One of the meanings of Jin's name is "blade." His little sister Saya's name means "sheath." Think about this for a second.
    • While his love interest Tsubaki's name is Japanese for "camellia," the tsuba in her name is the sword guard at the hilt of a Japanese blade. Maybe unintentional, maybe not.
    • This also extends to his sword. "Yukianesa" ("Snow Woman") is more popularly known as the infamous "Yuki Onna" in Japanese folklore: a pale-skinned woman with inhuman beauty that appears on snowy nights. In some accounts, she is depicted as a Succubus or something akin to a Vampire who drains/absorbs the "life force" of her victims. She is described as beautiful and serene, yet ruthless in killing anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in her presence. Now think about the effect the sword has had on Jin's psyche throughout the series.
  • Mercy Kill: Supposedly the reason for his obsession with killing Ragna, as noted by his dialogue in Hakumen's route in Continuum Shift:
Jin: "My brother is suffering in his own private hell. It is for that reason that I intend to kill him, to end his pain forever. To save him from the insanity of this world."
    • Given Chronophantasma's True Ending, he may have to actually do it next time.
    • As of Central Fiction, his win quote to Izanami implies that he feels he has to do this to Saya, telling her remorsefully to "go to sleep".
  • Mood-Swinger: Jin's mood tends to change depending on who he interacts with. Normally he's aloof and taciturn, but around Ragna he's a hell of a lot more emotive and fight happy, around Noel he's even meaner than normal, and around Tsubaki he's somewhat more open with her.
  • Morality Pet: His relationship with Tsubaki is one of his very few redeeming qualities as she's one of the very few people he treats with any sort of kindness and warmth. He also doesn't seem to mind Makoto that much and cares enough about her to defend her from Hazama when he tried to kill her.
    • Kick the Morality Pet: He does this in the Wheel of Fortune timeline where he dismisses Tsubaki as his attention is shifted towards Ragna. He later paid for it in kind (thanks to Nu) and, as Hakumen, regretted it ever since. Jarringly enough, he also does this to Tsubaki in the anime during their confrontation (in the game he's still feeling sorry even after beating a brainwashed Tsubaki and is determined to save her).
  • Morph Weapon: Hihiirokane transforms from a cube-like shape into a katana.
  • Multi-Slot Character: Hakumen is Jin Kisaragi thrown back in time and merged into the Susano'o unit. In this case, both are introduced as separate characters before the link is revealed.
  • Mr. Fanservice: The BIGGEST male character of this material in the whole series. Period. Very handsome and very sexy (what with those tights and legs). He is a Tsundere and has a soft heart for the people he cares about. In-universe, both male and female characters have expressed attraction towards him. In real-world, he also has a large population of oggling female fans.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: He honestly thought that if he killed his brother, Ragna, he would pay attention to him instead of his sister though he happened to be Brainwashed and Crazy at the time. It's unknown as of yet whether Jin had planned to kill Saya as well though most likely not, as the guy who brainwashed him in the first place did it so he could get Saya without trouble. That, and make Ragna's life miserable for kicks.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: With someone that means blade, he sure is going to be dangerous.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: As highlighted under Freudian Excuse, part of the reason for his unkind behavior was due to Ragna basically abandoning him when Saya became ill, the loss of his original home following the attack on the church by Terumi, and his treatment by others when he was with the Kisaragi family (including his own adoptive family). Him refusing to befriend with others and even actively driving away people was essentially a defense mechanism to prevent him from risking any more losses of people he grew attached to.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Delivered at the end of his Continuum Shift storyline, and a little heavy on the exclamation marks.
"Give up? You have got to be joking. I've already given up on life... on the world. But I've decided to cast aside apathy and fight... not only against this so-called 'order,' but against the world! Tsubaki, if you insist on preserving this travesty you call order, then from now on, you are my enemy! I am the cold steel... the blade that will restore balance to this world! Nox Nyctores Yukianesa, activate!"
  • No-Sell: His Power of Order renders him immune to any kind of phenomenon intervention. This comes in handy when Izayoi, in a trance, applies Immortal Breaker on him; he survives it aside from minor wounds, much to her surprise and delight.
  • Noble Demon: After Character Development, this is what he amounts to.
  • Nominal Hero: Despite him being known as "The Hero of Ikaruga", Jin is a MAJOR bastard that acts condescending to others and downright abusive to Noel. He's also selfish to the point that no problems besides his own meant anything to him and would start acting Ax-Crazy whenever around Ragna.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: He claimed that he didn't join Kagura in CP for his planned coup d'etat, but merely as a means to bait Tsubaki. Even after Tsubaki is saved however, he still continues to assist in Kagura's plan despite not having much of an incentive.
  • Not Worth Killing: After he handily beats Ragna (due to his handicap) in Chronohpantasma, he tells him this and just settles for rubbing it (and his boot) in his face.
    • Inexplicably, he also coldly says this to Tsubaki after defeating her in the anime, leaving her on the ground and leading to her almost committing suicide (as opposed to Phantom teleporting her away while Jin wonders if he can save her like the game).
  • Oblivious to Love: In the Drama CD The Wheel of Fortune, he may be this or may be pretending to be oblivious. Even Ragna notices that Tsubaki has a crush on Jin the moment he meets Tsubaki. Ironically, his birthday is in Valentine's Day.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: When it comes to joke ends or extra stuffs, ASW just made sure you never forget that Jin is "that psychotically brother-obsessed jackass", no matter what kind of development he had over the canon story.
  • One-Man Army: He took down the Ikaruga Federation all by himself. In only two days.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Pretty much says this word for word to Ragna, despite being in an insane, homoerotic manner. He also won't let anyone to do it before him.
Jin: Brother, how many times do I have to tell you? I'M the only one that's allowed to kill you. GOT IT!?!?
    • In CF, even if Izayoi is also going to kill Ragna and he isn't fully healthy yet, Jin still doesn't want her to do it.
  • Only Sane Man: In his Military Academy days, when everything was good and proper, he is literally this. He is most frequently seen scolding Noel, Makoto, or his roommates whenever they do something improper to his eyes. It's a far cry from his characterization in the main games themselves.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: It's no secret that he's completely nuts about killing Ragna, so when he stops being his Blood Knight self around him you know something is seriously up. In Central Fiction, Jin drops all of his quirks in matches featuring Ragna, and even refers to him as "Dark One", not unlike Hakumen. On a minor note, his voice also becomes deeper and slightly more gruff for some reason, almost the same as Hakumen (without the enhanced sound effects). Considering the ending of CP it seems that this was Jin's wake up call.
  • Order Versus Chaos: As stated above in Ragna's folder, this is partly the reason for their rivalry. Being the wielder of "The Power of Order" it should be obvious which side of the conflict he's on. Naturally, this also extends to Hakumen.
  • Overranked Soldier: Played straight and subverted.
    • During Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift, Jin was a Major due to killing Lord Tenjo and bringing the Ikaruga Civil War to a quick end. While a loose cannon throughout, he ended up leaving the NOL full-time after Continuum Shift. Terumi used Jin to hasten the war's conclusion to try to close the net on Rettenjou, but it slipped away, and Jin was quickly promoted to a desk job as a figurehead hero to keep him from rediscovering the power of order and using it against him. He invariably did, thanks to intervention by Jubei, Rachel, Valkenhayn, Hakumen, and Ragna — in that order.
    • During Wheel of Fortune and Slight Hope, Tenjo died due to being caught in a shockwave of a nearby explosion, and Jin had to earn his Major rank the hard way. The resulting PTSD did nothing to help ease his brother issues.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Jin seldom smiles outisde of having a Psychotic Smirk or a Slasher Smile. Lampshaded by Litchi in her win quote against him in her Arcade Mode in Calamity Trigger.
Litchi: "I think you'd be a lot more popular if you tried smiling a little more. Hmm... Then again, some people might be into that 'as cold as ice' personality..."
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Even present-day Jin cares a great deal about Tsubaki. When faced with her either becoming possessed or corrupted by Terumi's influence, he immediately sets out to save her.
    • He seems rather friendly to Makoto (if a bit snarky at times), and saved her from Hazama.
    • He is also apologetic to the female officer that he hits to escape the hospital at the beginning of CS.
    • In the Drama CD The Wheel of Fortune. it was shown that when they were kids, he is rather affectionate to Saya before she became sickly.
    • In his Military Academy days, he has this moment with Noel when he gave her back the paper that was blown away from her, despite the hallucination of her resemblance to Saya.
    • In CP, he decides to spare Ragna after finding out that he isn't at his best (in his own special way of course). He can also hold off his obsession towards his brother when there are more pressing matters at hand, which is a lot considering what happens in later games.
    • In Chronophantasma's True Ending, he shows rather noticeable concern for Kagura when Izanami strikes him down and later urges Noel to run away with Celica when Ragna's Azure Grimoire is going out of control.
    • In Chrono Phantasma EXTEND's version of Remix Heart, he protected Mai and Kajun from danger when one of the NOL Military Academy building's security system went haywire.
    • In Central Fiction, he shows no objection in joining Ragna to save Noel/Saya from Terumi/Susanoo. Later on, when Ragna attempts to strike down Noel in his attempt to erase himself from her memories, Jin quickly comes to her defense.
    Jin: No! Noel, run!
  • Post-Final Boss: After Ragna kills Terumi for good, he battles his siblings one last time before he erases himself from the world; Ragna vs Jin is the absolute final battle of Central Fiction and the series as a whole.
  • Power Gives You Wings: His ice powers manifests in white angel wings, during his win poses.
  • Power Limiter: Due to Yukianesa's influence on him, he isn't able to use his Power of Order to its full extent. By the end of Continuum Shift, this is fixed and he is the only one so far to actually make Terumi flee.
    • Power Incontinence: At first, for his Power of Order. May definitely be subverted later on as Jubei is currently training Jin to utilize his full powers.
  • Primary-Color Champion: To contrast with his brother wearing Red and Black and Evil All Over, he wears primarily blue colors, with a sleeveless longcoat that has a red underside and yellow details. However, just as how Ragna subverts that trope, Jin too subverts this as when he was introduced he was far from heroic. He becomes a straigher example after Character Development, though he's not the nicest person with this color combination.
  • Princely Young Man: He's the heir of a noble family and as such he's this. He acts rather cold and aloof towards everyone except Tsubaki (when not outright being a jerk) and he's also a honor student who's the Student Council President twice and renowned for his talent and charisma.
  • Privileged Rival: He grows up as a member of one of the NOL's duodecim families, which means he received the best education and training to one day serve in the praetorian guard. Contrast with Ragna's much humbler upbringing by Jubei in the woods.
  • Propaganda Hero: Jin is by no means a weakling but much of his reputation as the "Hero of Ikaruga" comes from the fact that the NOL (Hazama/Terumi in particular) deliberately inserted him into the Ikaruga War and make him end it when virtually anyone else who was potentially stronger/more helpful than Jin could have done that job but were instead sidelined by Hazama/Terumi so that he can become NOL's figurehead hero and thus an easier target to manipulate. There's a reason why he's called "The False Hero".
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Whenever he's around Ragna, his mental state seems to regress to this.
  • Psychotic Smirk: When being around Ragna and being controlled by Yukianesa.
    • Slasher Smile: Especially apparent in the anime, he lets out this when his fight with Ragna becomes more intense.
  • Puppet King: Or rather Puppet Hero. He was revered as a hero for ending the Ikaruga Civil War, though the war itself was completely shady business involving the NOL with a lot of things happening behind the scenes to the point that Hazama had to take away Jin's memories when he seem to be catching on. Jin himself was sent in to test the potential of "The Power of Order", and his "victory" over Tenjo was used to show the NOL's authority and to establish a stricter rule by the NOL.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: He wore glasses in his Academy days (and looked damn good in them), but they're never seen or mentioned afterwards.
  • Rags to Riches: Back when he was a kid, Jin was simply an orphan living in a Church with his baby sister and older brother. When the Kisaragi family found him and adopted him later on after the Church Incident, he rose his way to the top of the family's Social Darwinist Hierarchy and landed himself at the TOP all on his own! And now, he's the next in-line to be the ruler of this family. Oh, and did we mention that he's also the youngest and most famous Hero in the world of BlazBlue?
  • Rage Against the Heavens: In CF he decides to kill Noel and the Master Unit since he sees them as an evil that defies the order of the world and desires to create a world without gods.
  • Reality Warper: The "Power of Order" is this, in a sense. Jin can basically tamper with fate and counter any of its interventions if his will is strong enough.
  • Red Baron: He is the "The Anti-Body" and "The Endbringer."
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Ragna’s Red Oni, where his brother is hot-tempered and quick to draw first blood, Jin is cold, aloof, and borderline sociopathic. Continuum Shift started to give him a few red traits, though.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: He didn't really start off as a villain, but he was a selfish asshole who was only really concerned about his own problems. He gets some Character Development in the second game and pulls a Heel–Face Turn to fight against the villains, along with taking several levels in badassery to boot. He's only slightly less of a jerk, though, and still treats people with both apathy and aloofness, especially if it's Noel Vermillion.
  • Reverse Grip: Uses it on several of his attacks, such as his 5C, 6C, j.2D and CF 3C normals, perhaps to show how he's not too different from his brother Ragna.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: In Central Fiction, due to his Power of Order, he is unaffected by the memory altering properties of the Embryo and therefore knows exactly what's going on. Namely, he recognizes that he used to be a Major while his rank in the Embryo is a Captain.
  • The Rival: Somewhat Deconstructed. Jin is obsessed with defeating Ragna, to the absolute exclusion of everyone and everything around him. This makes him easily manipulated by the likes of Hazama, who uses him as an obstacle to keep Ragna at bay. Hakumen even calls him out on this in the former's True Ending path in Continuum Shift. Which makes sense because he used to be Jin in the Wheel of Fortune timeline and his obsession costed Tsubaki her life, something which still haunts him. It takes him three whole games before he sets his priorities straight and decides to help save the world before settling things with Ragna.
    S - Y
  • Sanity Has Advantages: Once Jin overcomes the Yukianesa's corrupting influence, he has shown himself to be a better fighter and calmer thinker.
  • Saving the World: His supposed duty as the world's "Antibody". His purpose is to destroy anything that threatens the world's stability. Which is likely the reason for his psychosis, and why he is so hostile towards any anomalies like Ragna (the Black Beast) and Noel (Murakumo Units), although he technically has his own personal reasons for hating them as well. In Remix Heart, he also gets to be hostile towards Mai because she acquired a little Azure powers from an artifact and, as he senses it, it reminds him of Ragna (though he only acted on it due to Yukianesa's influence; later without the weapon he'll only feel uneasy around her).
  • Screw Destiny: Jin absolutely despises the very concept of fate, believing it to be just another lie, and adamantly refuses to be a puppet of anyone or anything who would dare attempt to sway him. Central Fiction takes this to its logical conclusion: Jin's ultimate desire is a world without a god.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!
  • Selective Obliviousness: Lampshaded by Makoto in the drama CD. He is so antisocial that he won't even raise an eyebrow when someone talk with him with chocolates all over his/her face. However, it's different if he cares about that someone. He still won't react, but he will at least tell you politely.
    • Also in "~Teach Me Miss Litchi~", where he doesn't even notice that Noel is wearing a bright orange maid dress until Litchi points him to it.
  • Self-Made Man: Jin earned his achievements in life all by himself despite living through hell and being adopted by a screwed-up family. It's basically confirmed that the Kisaragi family take in countless talented children all over the world. The reason he's the next in-line to inherit this family? It's because he bulldozed his way to the top and pretty much out-talented them all.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: His Drive attacks has him shaping his ice in various forms to attack his foe. Also his Hishouken (Ice Soaring Sword) special (where he throws ice daggers) and Hiyoku Getsumei DD (where he forms a bow and arrow made of ice).
  • Sheath Strike: He strikes with his sheath in a few of his moves.
  • Ship Tease: With Tsubaki. Lots and lots of it. Just for one: his birthday is in the Valentine Day (where, in Japan, girls give chocolates to the boys), while Tsubaki's is in White Day (where boys give a gift in return to the girls).
    • Even though it's a joke on the creators' behalf, let's not forget Ragna. Jin's "~Help Me, Professor Kokonoe!~" episode in BB:CS, his joke ending, Rachel's CS joke ending, Arakune's joke CS ending, and his general obsession with his dear nii-san make it possibly one of the most hinted at parings in the series (even if, as said, it's usually just for a joke).
    • Also with Makoto. He is rather caring towards her, almost to the point of his level of caring towards Tsubaki.
    Jin: "Lieutenant... Are you alright?""
Makoto: "Y-yes! Thank you so much for saving me...!"
Jin: "Your safety is all that... m-matters... ugh..."
  • Shotoclone: As an Expy of Ky, this was sort-of inevitable: he has a traditional projectile move, but unlike Ky's traditional Shoryuken-esque move Jin instead has two upward quick slashes as his anti-airs, with a similar command.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has one with both of his siblings. A Chronophantasma gag reel has this played with Ragna to a much straighter extent; in an alternate universe with no fighting, Jin and Ragna are siblings who absolutely cannot stand each other - the former is a goody-two-shoes honor student while the latter is a slacker. Barring his Character Development shift in Central Fiction, this is one of the only few times Jin is not depicted with any sort of crazy and psychotic obsession over his brother and feels the need to kill him out of necessity.
  • Signature Move: Wouldn't be Jin without his Ice Car.
  • Silence, You Fool!: Towards Noel, when she thanked him for accepting her and Ragna's alliance near the end of Chronophantasma.
Jin: You have no right to speak to me. Now, shut up, you trash.
    Noel: ...So mean.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: His Yukikaze DD, if you successfully counter an enemy's attack first. Also in CP, his Sekkajin can be followed up with this.
  • Sissy Villain: Jin's a bonafide Bishōnen, complete with what looks like a split-skirt tunic for his outfit, and gets all giddy like a teenage girl whenever he's near Ragna, but he was pretty much this pre-Character Development. He even uses gentle-masculine "Boku" (normally used by young boys, such as Carl Clover) to refer to himself (instead of the coarse-masculine "Ore"note  or gender-neutral "watashi"note  expected of a grown man), further accentuating his immaturity. He does gets out of the latter part post-CS though.
  • Skill Gate Characters: Much of Jin's infamous reputation comes from his "Icecar" move, which comes out very fast and hard to dodge, as well as allowing him to move fast through the air.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: In the cover of BlazBlue: Spiral Shift.
  • Slide Attack: His infamous "icecar", Musou Senshozan (Fog Spear Tipped Crystal Slash) and its EX version Musou Tosshougeki (Fog Spear Thrusting Crystal Strike) is him sliding on an ice surfboard and crashing onto his foe.
  • The Snark Knight: Downplayed; he's about as cynical as much as he's a snarker, but (as of CS' end) he refuses to just stand aside and be apathetic.
  • SNK Boss: Infinite-heat from story mode deserves a mention, because his infamous cheapness is made insanely worse by infinite freezing special moves.
  • The Social Darwinist: One of his dislikes is weaklings. It may have been from having been raised in a household that values Might Makes Right to the extremes.
  • Sociopathic Hero: Very much at his best, at least until Character Development kicked in.
  • Soul-Cutting Blade: It is stated that the ice created by Yukianesa destroys/absorbs life force. Gets another one in the form of Hihi'irokane in CF.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: As highlighted under Freudian Excuse, his haughtiness and caustic attitude are essentially an emotional armor he wears to cover up his loneliness and inferiority complex. Also confirmed by Word of God in an interview that Jin is supposed to embody Heroes in real life that are in his eyes, very lonely people inside. In order to be able to understand Jin's character, you have to see the world through his eyes.
  • The Spock: To Noel's Kirk and Ragna's McCoy, although he has some McCoy traits of his own, also serves as this to Tsubaki's Kirk and Makoto's McCoy.
  • Spread Shot: The D version of Hishoken/Ice Blade has him shooting multiple ice daggers in this fashion for the midair version. His Unlimited-only DD takes this up a notch.
  • The Stoic: For most of the time he acts like one, being apathetic, cold, distant, and aloof, barely showing any emotion to anyone. But it gets thrown out of the window when he's around Ragna or Noel.
  • Story-Breaker Power: His "Power of Order" is literally this. Not only can he basically eliminate anything he wants if he wishes it enough, but he is also given Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory from all of the time shenanigans, and can No-Sell a weapon that is meant to kill immortals. In case all of that wasn’t ridiculous enough, he can somehow stabilize Luna and Sena’s existence like an Observer would.
  • Straw Nihilist: Doesn't believe in community, and has no ideological or moral compass beyond himself. Rants sometimes about how meaningless the world and the order of the NOL is. By the end of his story in CS, he said he gave up on the world.
  • Student Council President: Jin was the Head of the Student Council of the Military Academy before he graduated.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: Really, Jin wears tight tights that completely shows off his sexy body frame and shapely legs and both male and female characters have expressed blatant interests in him.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Was this until he found out that the "Grim Reaper" is actually his older brother, Ragna. Then he quickly shifted to Tsundere territory.
  • Summon to Hand: A variant - In one of his Battle Intro, he's doing a Badass Arm-Fold, then a chunk of ice forms in front of him, from which he takes Yukianesa.
  • Super-Speed: Hardly a surprise due to being a wielder of a Katana-type weapon. He can quickly draw his weapon out of it's scabbard to slash in less than a second. and if you look closely at his Sekkajin/Snow Flower Storm move, he even uses one of his feet - which you can't clearly see in-game due to how fast he executes each slash.
  • Sword Beam: One of his Distortion Drives, Touga Hyoujin (Freeze Fang Ice Blade), made of ice.
  • Sword Plant: Or more like magically sinking your sword into the ground. But, it emits a pillar of ice a few feet in front of him, not unlike Gin Ichimaru's Shinsou. His Astral also starts with this.
  • Take Up My Sword: After Ragna removes Terumi from the Susano'o Unit, Trinity inserts Jin into it, effectively inheriting it from his alternate self Hakumen for the final battle. It's only temporary though as Trinity forces him out of the Unit after Terumi is defeated and the Susano'o Unit is sealed in the depths of the Boundary.
  • Talking Weapon: Yukianesa is the only Nox Nyctores shown so far to be capable of talking to its user (Jin). Either telepathically or otherwise.
  • A Taste of Power: In the very few scenes where Jin was able to fully utilize his powers, it's a spectacle. And if we go by what Hazama and Kokonoe said, that was just a taste of his true power.
  • Teen Genius: It is implied that he graduated out of the academy with high grades.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Noel in Chronophantasma, twice. First when saving Tsubaki from the Imperator's control, and then taking down the Take-Mikazuchi. Also with Ragna in the case of the latter, Jin really isn't fond of working with either of them.
  • Tender Tears: In one of his endings in his Story Mode in Calamity Trigger and in Central Fiction before Ragna devours his and Noel's memories of him.
  • Theme Naming: Ice, snow, and anything relating to the cold.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Hakumen is himself from another timeline. He doesn't learn this until Chronophantasma and he doesn't seem phased by the news, but from the way he talks it seems he'd begun to suspect it.
Jin: As I thought...Crossing swords with you feels like looking into a mirror.
    Hakumen: When did you notice?
Jin: Listening to your words and watching your actions it's hard not to.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After awakening to his Power of Order, he's become far more of a badass and a real thorn in the villain's side.
    • According to Ragna, should Jin’s true power managed to overcome Yukianesa, then he said that Jin will become his “greatest enemy”. This is also confirmed by Jūbei. After a month of training from Jūbei, Jin has become much more powerful; something several characters including Ragna remark on.
    • Visually, Jin’s powers have shown improvement ever since he learned of the “Power of Order”; prior games had Jin’s ice crystals sport a few jagged formations upon freezing his targets, while in Chronophantasma, the crystals are more smooth and refined on their surfaces; showing how much Jin has improved on his control over Yukianesa.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Tsubaki, Makoto, and even Noel noted that he was nicer before his involvement in Ikaruga War compared to his behavior post war, although they mistakenly blamed PTSD (it was actually because of a Laser-Guided Amnesia courtesy of Terumi).
    • The anime plays this straight with his attitude towards Tsubaki. Most of their relationship is glossed over and the Ship Tease is severely downplayed, with Jin treating her no different than he would anyone else. In the adaptation of their Continuum Shift confrontation, after a Curb-Stomp Battle, he tells her she's Not Worth Killing and leaves her in tears. Its pretty jarring to say the least.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By Chronophantasma he mellows down a bit and while still not nice he's at least much less of a prick around Noel. Even more in Central Fiction where he shows no objection in rescuing her from Terumi, and he defended her from Ragna attempting to strike her down in order to erase himself from her memories.
  • Tragic Ice Character: Associated with ice and snow, he has an aloof, cold personality, his crest has a snowflake shape, and his moves all have ice, snow and anything cold-related Theme Naming. There's also how Jin frequently has ended up on the short end of the stick whenever it comes with Terumi's shenanigans and that he grew up with an abusive adoptive family.
  • Tragic Keepsake: His Nox Nyctores: Yukianesa, which is given to him by Saya.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Implied during his childhood and after the Ikaruga War, Continuum Shift eventually reveals that this is actually a case of Laser-Guided Amnesia inflicted by Terumi, for both times. The former is confirmed in Centralfiction when Jin recounts that he can barely remember the events of the day at the Church, because Yukianesa drove him insane.
  • Troubled Abuser: Jin's relationship with Noel can best be described as abusive, and has a similarly dismissive attitude towards virtually everyone else. Of course, Jin ended up estranged from Ranga when he was younger and ended up under the care of the Kisaragi family, who themselve were rather abusive towards him, both of which ended up twisting him into a self-centered sociopathic jerk and Smug Snake.
  • Troubled, but Cute: Oh yea, he's a Bishōnen but he's got issues. From Terumi eating his memories twice leaving him confused, being put in a noble family where he doesn't get much love from everyone, and having to fight the Ikaruga War just after he graduated from the Academy. He's gotten better, but he's still brooding and cold.
  • True Companions: He will never admit it. But he does value the people close to him. Especially in his days in the Military Academy where despite his strict and cold attitude due to being the Student Council President, he gets along well with his friends Taro and Akane. As shown in Chrono Phatasma EXTEND's version of Remix Heart, he won't think twice to save Mai and Kajun from danger. In return, they all admire him and will definitely stick around by his side.
  • A True Hero: One major theme for Jin is that he didn't feel he rightfully earned his "Hero of Ikaruga" title, because he discovered the dirty workings behind the Ikaruga Civil War - especially with the fact that one of the villains, Hazama, deliberately set things up so Jin can be the "figurehead" for the NOL's military that he can manipulate. This (among other things) makes him cynical and cold, but his Character Development in the second game makes him realize what being a real hero really means, and from then on he sets off to follow and uphold his ideals.
  • Tsundere:
    • Yukianesa's influence aside, Jin is not a very pleasant person most of the time but if you are one of the people he's very close to, rest assured that he will protect you even at the cost of his own life as his Morality Pets Tsubaki and Makoto can attest to. Not that he would ever admit that!
    • In Arc Systems Works's Fan CD titled: "BlazBlue Fan Disc Tsundere CD" Jin is a host along with Rachel.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: In covers and promotional ads, Ragna, Jin and Noel are always sided together as the series's main protagonists.
  • Übermensch: He's apathetic towards how the world's going around him and goes by his own whims. Later he decides to be more active about it, trying to restore the balance of this world and turning it as he sees fit. He doesn't care what others think of him and will do anything necessary to achieve order and complete his goals, even if his closest ones are standing on his way. The Power of Order is pretty much a manifestation of it. Which makes him slowly and slowly becoming "another" Hakumen.
  • Unorthodox Sheathing: To a serious level of absurdness. Unlike Haohmaru, however, he catches the sword with its sheath vertically in mid-air and in the middle of a battle.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Hazama devoured Jin's memories of his childhood and told him about the Black Beast lurking inside of Ragna, so he can use their Sibling Rivalry to slow Ragna down. Hazama also made Jin go to the Ikaruga Civil War which lead to him becoming its "hero", and Hazama also ate Jin's memories again (of what exactly he did in the war) after the war.
  • The Upper Crass: He's part of the Kisaragi family, one of the Duodecim families, and he's definitely a huge jerk.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks in Central Fiction showed that Jin was very fond of Ragna and even compassionate. Pretty big far cry to the aloof and antisocial person he'd become as an adult.
  • Villain Protagonist: Pre-Character Development. Though he was at worst an Ax-Crazy jerk rather than a true villain.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: In contrast to his brother's status, Jin is seen as a hero for ending the Ikaruga civil war. Downplayed in that he's not really "evil" so much as "a massive jerk" (and he gets Character Development that turns him into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold) and he was intentionally propped up for this by the true Big Bad to further his own plans.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: In comparison to being a Corrupted Character Copy of Ky Kiske, Jin is a more virtuous version of Vergil. Both are the more calm Blue Oni to their more brash brother's Red Oni. They are both cold, distand, selfish jerks with strong hatred for weakness, which fortunately gets better over the course of the series. They share a Dark and Troubled Past involving their family, as well as having some of the most dysfunctional sibling rivalries with their brother. They even has a similar sword style. However this is where the similarities end. While Vergil is Ambiguously Evil, with an Ambition Is Evil mindset that ultimately leads him to literally falling to hell which only gets worse for him from there, Jin's insanity and villainous actions are entirely not his own, with Yuuki Terumi and Yukianesa being the ones responsible. As the series progresses, Jin actually gets better, while Vergil in becomes even worse up until the end. As arrogant as the two can be, Jin never looks for more power, as he believes that his strength is enough, and when it wasn't he looked to awaken his latent inner power to become stronger. Vergil in comparison always felt the need for more power, and would kill anyone to get it, actively endangering the world while doing so. While took a reality check for both of them to start to get better, Jin got it from his Alternate Self Future Badass Hakumen effectively telling him to grow up, while Vergil had to create a Helpless Good Side in the form of V and realize the literal monster he created/turned himself into.
  • Visual Pun: He's got green eyes and the stereotype associated with it.
  • Walking Armory: His mastery over Yukianesa is such that he can manipulate the ice he creates into different forms of weapons. These shapes include (but not limited to) swords, a giant bow with a giant arrow to match, pillars, spears, razors, etc.
  • Western Samurai. He's British and is skilled in Battoujutsu, a Japanese style of swordsmanship.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Tsubaki comes to apprehend him while she's wearing the Zero Squadron (Wings of Justice) getup, Jin asks if she knows what she's doing. Then he breaks it to her: In the Ikaruga Civil War, the Squadron disposed of many NOL soldiers that were potentially able to win the war (instead of Jin) after they're falsely condemned. He then asks Tsubaki if she's still following the NOL and Imperator's whims after knowing that.
  • When He Smiles: Jin is already a very handsome guy and always sports a pout in his face. But when he does smile genuinely (not counting his Slasher Smile and Psychotic Smirk when facing Ragna), he is downright gorgeous. This is shown more in Remix Heart where he is seen smiling more than in the games.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He has a fear towards the moon that goes unexplained, as Ragna revealed in his CT story.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Says this in one of his Calamity Trigger Story Mode paths when Nu refuses to stay down.
  • Winter Royal Gentlman: Jin is from one of the 12 most powerful noble families in the world, looks like a perfect Princely Young Man, is supernaturally handsome, his affinity with everything related to winter cold, and even including his personality.
  • Workaholic: Back in his Military Academy days, Jin is not only the top student of the Academy, but he's also the Student Council President who takes care of a lot of important matters within the school on a daily basis and he's very proficient at it, too. One panel in "Remix Heart" where he got sick and bedridden (because of Noel's cooking) had him say that the duties of his council were always done in advance so there's actually nothing for Mai and the other girls to assist him with while he's temporarily out of commission. In fact, he's so wrapped up in his workload that he didn't have time to do rest & recreation as the "Izanagi" of the year (much to the dismay of the then-"Izanami", his partner and pair of the year) because he's always busy. Is it any wonder that his Love Interest, Tsubaki, is so devoted to the idea of assisting him in his duties and wanted to be his Sexy Secretary?
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: When Jin received Yukianesa as a child, he was driven insane by its influence and it drove him into a murderous frenzy toward Ragna for years until he gained the willpower to suppress it.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Jin is considered to be the NOL's greatest soldier, but he couldn't even put a scratch against Ragna in their first fight in Calamity Trigger. Later, it was revealed that Jin's Evil Weapon, Yukianesa, is the flu preventing him from using his full strength, so that was the problem.
    • In Tsubaki's Story Mode in Continuum Shift, she couldn't believe that she actually defeated Jin knowing that he is far stronger than her. But it could be easily explained by the fact that Jin will never use all his strength when he's up against her.
    • In Alter Memory Anime, Tsubaki easily killed Jin with a simple stab in the gut (she's not even using the Immortal Breaker at this point). This should be impossible since Jin is the wielder of the Power of Order (See Immortality above) and that renders him immune to the concept of Death. Thankfully, the Takamagahara realized they cannot afford to lose him, and rewinded the whole event so that Jin will survive. Granted at the time Jin had yet to actually awaken said Power of Order.
  • Worthy Opponent: In his own twisted way, he considers his brother Ragna this. Jin claims that killing Ragna wouldn't be fair if they didn't fight with equal levels of hatred, and constantly taunts him for holding back.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He will do this in self-defense in almost all cases. Much less provocation is required if the girl's name is Noel Vermillion although he seems to get over her. He will, however, regret it and apologize for it whenever he does, except for - again - Noel.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: His Central Fiction arcade quote against Platinum has him claim he won't waste his strength hurting a child. This is, however, zig-zagged, because beforehand, he actually has no qualms in freezing Carl's mouth and then leaving him to suffocate to death, even if this one is non-canon, it shows that if push comes to shove, Jin will have no qualms on hurting a child.
  • Yandere: A non-romantic example (not that the shippers care mind you), but he's pretty obsessed with Ragna and threatens anyone who might steal his chance at killing him. By Central Fiction however he subverts this trope by becoming more and more like Hakumen.
  • You Fool!: Says this to Noel in Chronophantasma when she disobeys his order to leave with Celica when Ragna's Azure Grimoire goes berserk, turning him into a resemblance of the black Beast.
