This thread is for tropers who have trouble with English and would like some help with the crazy grammar of this crazy language.

Write down what you wish to edit on the wiki. If you have been suspended from editing, another troper might be kind enough to edit for you after your suggestions have been corrected.

The thread is for help and feedback on your own suggested edits.

If you want help correcting other people's edits (e.g., if you find a page which seems to have grammar problems but want a second opinion, or you don't feel able to fix it by yourself) then that's off-topic here, but we have a separate Grammar Police cleanup thread that can provide assistance.

P.S. A question about future posts. I've been told by a mod that I'll be banned again if I copy and paste anything written by another trope that contains spelling errors from the works page to the main page for that trope or vice versa. Would it be improper to post that stuff for review on here? It would be nice if it is, but since this thread is more dedicated to helping us with our own spelling and grammar problems, I understand if that's a no-go.

In the past, tropers have posted huge Walls of Text examples that they had previously added to TV Tropes so we could clean up their old English errors. I was so inundated by these tidal waves of text that I had to adopt a policy of not correcting work that was already on the wiki.

I would be glad to clean up the text that you describe above as long as it's of reasonable size, similar to that of your own work.

Thanks Arivne. I have read that link about writing in the present tense several times before, but I still made that mistake. Part of the problem might be that grammerly sometimes tells me to do past tense and I sometimes forget that you don't when I'm editing. Sorry.

1. My own stuff. @ Fargo: Season Four

  • Anti-Climax Boss: None of the finale's major casualties get to put up any real kind of fight before dying. Leon is strangled from behind, Josto and Oretta are executed, and Loy is stabbed to death after thinking that everything is over. In the previous episode, after being The Heavy for the season, Gaetano shot himself by accident. Of course, the Gray-and-Gray Morality of the season means that neither crime family is set up to score a triumphant victory over the other.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Before season 4's release, Noah Hawley proclaimed that he considered it the best season of Fargo yet. Season 4 received a poorer reception than its predecessors from both critics (albeit not by much) and audiences.

2. Stuff by another troper I'd like looked at before I post somewhere else. If I misunderstood when you said that was ok, please let me know.

@ Alpha and Omega

  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Having seen the attempts to stop the Temple from being rebuilt backfire, the Grand Mufti calls off further attempts, reasoning that, for whatever reason, Allah intends for the project to go forward.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Having slipped Gabriela a roofie to take her out of action and scoop her on a story, Brandon considers raping her, but desists because the DNA evidence would crucify him.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Judging by the way he boots various callers off his radio show, Lester no doubt finds them just as cringeworthy as the reader.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: The author uses this to avoid strawmen or hypocrites in this story. With the exception of Brandon, all of the characters are portrayed sympathetically, even the initially anti-Semitic Grand Mufti. Lester Stark, despite not only being a fundamentalist Christian but a televangelist into the bargain, is given perhaps one of the most sympathetic portrayals of such a figure outside of Christian fiction.
  • Wham Line: When excavating under the Temple Mount, Eric's archeological team uncovers the Ark of the Covenant. This would be a Wham Line in itself in most stories, but here, it sets up the real one, letting the reader know that this isn't just a Middle East political thriller they are reading:
"The Ark floated two or three inches above the floor of the chamber."

Henry Stickmin Series - Character (Mr. Macbeth)

  • BFG: He owns a futuristic rifle that can shoot an array of bullets, a accurate thin laser or a giant laser blast.
  • Energy Weapon: His gun can shoot lasers of different sizes.

Animator Vs Animation - Characters (Victim)

  • Identical Stranger: He have the exact same appearence of the Chosen One but they are different persons with different powers.

Joueur du Grenier

  • Art-Style Dissonance: Antoine Daniel's PSA about the four magical gems looks straight out of a children cartoon and depicts the gems as a group of friends, the red gems introduce himself and the other gems and explain that collecting them all allow them grant any wish, including destroying the universe, then the gems are shown dancing in circle and singing about how they will destroy the universe while keeping their cute voices.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The description of the Instruments of Chaos Starring Young Indiana Jones review says that "this video may contain a cameo". At the end of the video, Fred's ancestor, Archibald Von Grenier admits that he's not actually Fred's ancestor and asks him to pay attention on the initials of "Archibald Von Grenier" (with a little emphasis on Grenier's letter N), Fred then lists the letters A, V, G and N and exclaims "Wait, you are..." only for Archibald to reveal himself as an alien named "Alpha V de Gelganech" who is not related to the Angry Video Game Nerd in any ways. Fred is then stuck with a dumbfounded expression for the rest of the video.

Madness Combat - Trivia

  • Fan Nickname: The art-style of the new character sprites introduced in DedmosRebuilt is nicknamed the "Dissenter style" by fans, even though Dissenter is the second episode to use these new sprites.

"He owns a futuristic rifle that can shoot an array of bullets as well as a thin laser beam and a giant laser blast."

"He has the exact same"

"group of friends. The red gem introduces himself and the other gems, and explains that collecting them all allows them to grant any wish, including destroying the universe. Then the gems dance in a circle and sing, their voices as cute as always,''' about how they will destroy the universe."

(It's best to avoid the phrasing "is shown". Don't say "Hamlet is shown talking to Ophelia." Just say "Hamlet talks to Ophelia.")

This game can be summed up as "an amnesiac boy who "disguises" himself as a Mentor Mascot guiding teenage magical girl warriors to fight sexy demons and zombified alternate selves with random things, such as feathers and traffic signs, etc. and travels across The Multiverse, <- comma which has infinite numbers of parallel worlds with various infinite possibilities."

^ Since that sentence is so long, I would normally try to break it up into two sentences. However, since it's clearly trying to express a single thought, I'll let it go.

...Eliza loses her power after telling her ability to talk to animals after using it in order to rescue her big sister from the poachers. <- period As a result, she also loses the ability to understand animal languages. At the climax of the movie, Eliza still remembers how to command the elephants to stop before they touch the poachers' electric fences. She touches behind the elephant's ear using her foot. At the end, she manages to get her powers back from the shaman.

^ In the first sentence you use "power" and "ability" as if they're two different things. Also, the word "telling" doesn't fit in the sentence. I have tried to re-write it the way I think you meant to.

In "Demon's Tower" Dungeon. <- period Besides demons, some enemies the heroines fight are technically living parasite zombies of the heroines' alternate selves from some parallel worlds.

@ Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat

  • Too Cool to Live: In the climax, Ramon and Nigel both go down almost immediately after performing feats of coolness that were better than anything most of the main characters did in that fight. Some of Mardulak's bodyguards, who show up as The Cavalry in a limousine, armed to the teeth, also count.

@ Black Tide Rising

  • Mama Bear: The Secretary of Education tries to cease zombie-killing activities and put zombie-killers on trial for murder because she was separated from her daughter during the breakdown of society. Her daughter was almost certainly turned into a zombie afterward and it is implied that the secretary is trying to save her (zombified) life and/or take revenge on the people who might have already put her down.

@ Lethal Weapon

  • Pragmatic Villainy: Rudd initially tries to threaten Murtaugh to make him leave the case to avoid the complications of killing a cop.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Rika quickly befriends Riggs' dog Sam and shows great concern for his safety during the shootout at Riggs' trailer.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: Rika spends her last scene wearing Riggs' jacket after they're attacked while making love in his trailer.
  • Unwitting Pawn: It's implied that Rudd is using Rika to transport some of his dirty money, judging by the forcefulness he uses when ordering the police not to touch a "diplomatic" suitcase she brought him. Unusually for this trope, Rika doesn't seem surprised to see the police investigating her boss, merely asking for confirmation that he's breaking the law and then telling Riggs that Rudd shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

@ Alpha and Omega stuff I'd like to move to the Prophecy Twist and Taking the Kids pages.

  • Prophecy Twist: Once the Ark is discovered and we are made aware of what kind of story we are reading, the question is whether it's the Jewish or Christian End Times prophecies coming true. Then, when the Mahdi emerges, the question arises as to how Islam plays into things. The twist: all three Abrahamic religions are validated in the end.

  • Taking the Kids: In Gabriela's Back Story, her now ex-husband divorced her and took their three-year-old daughter, Heather, having been awarded custody because he worked out of his home and she was a globetrotting journalist.

Madness Combat

  • Iconic Sequel Outfit: Hank's outfit in Consternation, the 7th episode of the series is his most popular one.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • After Hank gains a new metal arm, he body-slams Tricky on a platform, throws him against a wall, crushes him with an other spiky platform, beats him up and shoot him with Tricky's own gun. All what's left of Tricky after that beatdown is an upper body full of holes. This is quickly followed by Tricky respawning with an intact body and gaining the upper hand on Hank.
    • When a giant skeleton spawns, Hank starts to beat it up before it even finished spawning, the skeleton only gets to hit Hank once before Hank gives it a beatdown and stuck it into a wall of light, when the giant skeleton frees himself a few secons later, it's ready to continue the fight, butHank simply slices its face with a katana and stomps the skeleton into the ground for good.
  • Storming the Castle: Several episodes are start with the protagonists assaulting their ennemies' buildings, but they tend to be interrupted in the middle of the raid by some unexpected events.

Animator Vs Animation

  • Deus ex Machina:
    • Once it looks like the Spider King is about to defeat the Second Coming and his friends, a Wither come out of a portal with no explanations to attack the Spider King, allowing the Second Coming and his friends to escape.
    • After the Dark Lord kills the Second Coming's friends and is about to kill the Chosen One and leave a harshly wounded Second Coming stomped into a wall, the Second Coming gains super powers out of nowhere, heals himself, curb stomps the Dark Lord and brings his friends back to life.

The Legend of Zelda CD-i games

  • Plot Hole: When Lord Kiro tells Zelda that the Duke Onkled betrayed the king, Zelda says that she already know, even though she never learns this earlier in the game.

The Twelve Tasks of Asterix - Funny

  • Caius Tiddlus's way of walking involves bopping his head forward at every steps in a silly way, this contrasts a bit with his constant stoic expression. Obelix also quickly starts to imitate his way of walking when he and Asterix follow Caius Tiddlus to the trials.

Thanks. I have too much new stuff of my own today for any more of the Alpha and Omega stuff, but hope to get back to it soon. For now here's my next nine things. I was only going to post seven or eight before noticing I can read all of them at once without scrolling down when only using half screen, when sometimes technically shorter posts I've made (in terms of number of tropes) have taken up more screen.

@ From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back This isn't a page yet, but one I am going to make.

  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: This book is praised as far better than the first omnibus due to the stories having better continuity, less repetition, and more elements and characters from the old canon.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Captain Needa was one character who fans were eager to see, but he only makes one appearance across the 40 stories and is portrayed as a typical, unpleasant Imperial officer.

@ The Slumber Party Massacre (and for the main pages of those tropes as well)

  • Cool Teacher: Coach Jana is fair and encouraging towards her students both on and off the basketball court and goes to Trish's house out of concern for the girls' safety.
  • Furniture Blockade: Trish and Kim barricade the bedroom door with dressers. The killer instead breaks into the room through the window, and the two girls are unable to move all of the furniture to escape out the door in time to keep Kim from being the next victim.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Trish and her friends are into boys and partying, and Trish's room has many stuffed animals, but the girls are also skilled basketball players.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Trish's first scene has her throwing out her old toys, but deciding to keep a stuffed dog which she pets the head of.
  • Insult Backfire: When Trish calls Diane a snob for not wanting to invite Valerie to the slumber party, Diane retorts that only important people can be snobs.
  • Uncertain Doom: Linda is attacked in the school by Thorne and takes refuge in a closet. Thorne starts drilling through the door, causing Linda to scream in terror before the camera cuts away to Thorne running outside. It seems doubtful that Thorne would have been unable to get in and kill Linda, but his clothes don't have any blood splatter and he looks flustered and urgent to get away rather than pleased and in control.

@ Supernatural

  • Fanfic Fuel: After Jack became the new God did he bring any of the angels besides Castiel back from the Empty? And what is Heaven like after he knocked down the walls and let people interact with each other.

jahman: First of all, "Itachi has this reaction" isn't enough context. You need to describe the reaction, like "Itachi is horrified at his own actions" or something.

"his own well-meaning yet misguided actions towards him." Here, you should use the characters' names, to avoid making it hard to keep track of who "his" refers to. (Also, what well-meaning yet misguided actions are these? Remember that not everybody's read Naruto.)

"Itachi spends a lot of time up to stopping the Edo Tensei" Do you mean "a lot of time before stopping the Edo Tensei"?
