Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yeah, fanfic!Frollo is no-fly for two reasons:

  • A) It's an unpublished work.
  • B) It's your fanfic, so you can't be the source of a YMMV item like Complete Monster.

Agents of SHIELD Season 4 Fanfics is mine too and it's incomplete, so for that, Brett Petrie may need to be removed from the fanworks sandbox for those reasons also.

[up] Done and done.

And Future? For future reference... don't do this again. Please. From your preemptive writeup on Malick well before his arc was over to posting candidates that clearly violate established rules, we shouldn't have to say "don't do this" more than once to get the point across. That goes double for you, ACW.

I will say one thing, I think fan fic examples would get more respect on this thread, if they mainly came from more appropriate franchises (Batman, One Piece, Star Wars, etc) rather then MLP fics and if they were proposed by people who have no relationship with the author of the fic.

There may be some cool fic examples out there, but we never see them on this thread.

Future, you asked before if you could propose a hypothetical example and were told not to. Why did you still do it?

[up] That Fanfic Gangrel entry proposed a couple weeks ago was a pretty good representation for a candidate from a fanfic.

It really doesn't matter what the original franchise the fanfic was based upon as long as it's not some darkfic but has reasonable enough writing. They simply don't get respect because the examples trying to be put up are awful in the first place. It's not a franchise thing, it's a poorly written character thing.

Fan works are just a topic I like to avoid entirely simply because most of the conversation that revolves around them seems to hinge on the more... troublesome candidates (this is no exception). It is a topic that has a tendency to explode into controversy and pointless arguing/debates is something this thread still needs to work on getting back in control.

Yes, there are good fanfic candidates out there. Yes, I would be willing to read a well-written fanfiction if it had a solid candidate that didn't count purely because of bad writing/exploitation. Unfortunately? It seems those are the types of fanfic candidates that come through here most often.

@ Irene, except I think MLP is over represented in terms of fan fic proposals on this thread, if we have had a wider variety of fan fic proposals, people here would not be sick of fan fic proposals.

@ ACW, well that is a fan film right? I am going to appreciate that more because it takes a little more effort to produce, though it be interesting to see a fan work that doesn't use an obvious choice.

Doesn't matter the franchise. The problem is still the examples are really bad almost all the time. I fail to see how the medium or franchise is relevant at all. A darkfic is clearly poorly written anyway, regardless of what franchise it came from. That's why it's called a darkfic. Works for any fan works. They need to still provide a proper setting via writing(fan film, fan videos, etc.) in the first place before a character can even remotely stand a chance. If the settings are decent enough, good. Then they still have to hit the baseline standard. If so, we can decently vote for them. They may or may not make it after we go through the basic steps for finding a proper example from a fanwork.

[up] If somebody who has read your fanfic wanted to propose him, that'd have been fine. You're not allowed to propose(or vote for that matter) on your own characters or apply them to YMMV tropes. It's basic common sense at this point that you have no say in the YMMV pages. It's simply author bias. The readers need to feel that characterization to apply that particular trope.

Likewise, just let it go. You were given inproper information about the rules here. It's over already. There's nothing for you to say at this point. Maybe somebody will read your fic and attempt an effortpost later. If not? Well, it's not a big deal if one character doesn't make this trope. It's not that important.

So I'm on the second book in the Dawn of Dragons trilogy for Dragons of Requiem. Think I found another candidate or two. I'll let you all know more once I'm done with all three books. The villain's Freudian Excuse may have a bit more weight on him though.

[up][up] True, but, some works (say, ASOIAF/GOT or Berserk) allow for settings that if they were in other works WOULD be considered darkfics. Hell, from what I know about Berserk (granted, not TOO much) it doesn't really seem POSSIBLE to make a darkfic of that.
[up] As bad as Dies? I'm intrigued.

@Irene, I think people here who are not fans of MLP do not want go through endless parade of MLP fics to decide whether characters count or not.

If we had the occasional MLP fic, mixed in with several other fic proposals from other, more appropriate franchises then I think things would be different. There is one cannon MLP examples, compare that to various comic book and manga franchises, Star Wars, even Star Trek which is fairly idealistic has 12 examples, why don't we see more fics from those franchises here instead?

The longer ones (and Nitro; what's the tally?) go next week; here's this weeks:

  • Platinum End: Yamada Mimimi, also known as Misurin, was an amateur model who was arrested at age 14 after murdering several of her classmates just because she felt like they were prettier than her. Her cruelty attracts the attention of Metropoliman, who breaks her out of prison and grants her the Angel Wings and the Red Arrows, the latter of which could make people fall in love with her and easy to manipulate. She used that on various school girls she could easily kill, and one of them she forced to have sex with her, all the while telling her victims that they're ugly. It was even implied that she penetrated the girl she controlled with her knife, which was how she killed her After setting up her most recent victim, the police try to stop her, so she pierces them with the Red Arrows. However, one officer, in spite of the Arrow's effects, fights it well enough to still try to apprehend her, so she orders the rest of the cops to kill him. While she was under Metropoliman's control to lure out Kakehashi, committing rape, murdering the cops, and slaughtering her classmates were all on her own volition.
  • Thunderbolt Fantasy: The manga version of Mie Tian Hi, romanized in Japanese as Betsutengai ("Skeleton Who Scorns the Heavens"), is the leader of the Onyx Demons and an arrogant warrior who believes none can stand against him. When hunting down the Sacred Weapon guarded by the Tan clan, Betsutengai slaughters the guardians, including young Tan Hi's elder brother, and sets about slaughtering the population of villages that get in his way, personally killing a child just to get a village Headman to talk. When he is humiliated in battle by the thief Rin Setsua, Betsutengai opts to kill himself to destroy the sacred sword in a Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum, knowing this act will unleash a powerful demon god that will annihilate the entire world.
  • Death Follows, by Cullen Bunn, A. C. Zamudio and Carlos Nicolas Zamudio (also in novel form as The Remains by Bunn): "The Hired Man", Cole Jensen, with a smile that seems to disproportionately stretch across his whole face, looks about as wicked as he actually is. A wanderer who takes up residence at a local farm, Cole immediately begins attempting to molest the youngest daughter of the family, Abbie, and eventually murders a young boy for no apparent reason. Revealed to be a Serial Killer of young girls who is plagued by a curse that raises all those around him from the dead, Cole has been on the run for years from his over half-a-dozen victims, and, after being fired from the farm for disturbing the children, Cole returns, flings Abbie's older sibling from a window, then kills the defenseless girl, happily taunting the family of her fate afterwards. When attacked by Abbie's parents, Cole kicks her pregnant mother in the stomach extremely hard, causing her unborn baby to be stillborn, before screaming his plans to gut them all. A psychopathic hick with a hunger for death everywhere he went, Cole Jensen was a truly cruel and depraved killer of the highest order.
  • The Icewind Dale Trilogy: Akar Kessell from The Crystal Shard is the self-proclaimed Tyrant of Icewind Dale who formed a pact with Crenshinibon, the titular Crystal Shard, to fulfill his megalomaniacal aspirations. Even before finding the Crystal Shard, Kessell murdered his mentor, whom he considered like a father, on the order of a cabal of evil sorcerers in the hopes of gaining power and prestige. Ultimately nothing more than a loose end to tie up, Kessell was abandoned in the wastelands of Icewind Dale where he found Crenshinibon and set out to use its power to conquer Toril. Kessell would use the Crystal Shard to enslave countless goblinoid tribes and mind-control innocent women to be his sex slaves. Kessell soon grew bored and, against the advice of Crenshinibon, set loose his armies on the Ten-Towns where thousands where slaughtered, but, proving himself an inept leader, he was outwitted and defeated by Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall. Despite Crenshinibon being known for its corrupting influence, Akar Kessell proved to be a monster all along who was buried beneath an avalanche by the Crystal Shard when Kessell's own power lust grew too much for even the Shard to handle.
  • Danger Zone (1996): Monsieur Chang, a rogue agent and the ex-business partner of Jim Scott, aims to take possession of a load of nuclear waste to sell to North Korea in exchange for a hefty payment. A year after his first attempt to steal the waste load fails, Chang pursues mining engineer Rick Morgan over to Africa after the toxic spillage results in over a thousand fatalities. A complete sociopath interested only in profit, in his pursuit of the waste Chang wipes out a rebel village, strangles Scott to death with a gleeful grin on his face, shoots his own associate dead after he wears out his use, crushes the neck of Scott's contact, and leaves Morgan to die in an irradiated cave after taking his associate Kim hostage. In a moment of boredom, Chang cruelly attempts to rape Kim, and spitefully tosses her to her intended death after Morgan bests him.
  • Lone Wolf McQuade: Rawley Wilkes, illicit Arms Dealer, crime lord, and total sociopath, is the smooth-talking Arch-Enemy of the titular Texas Ranger Jim McQuade. Rawley murders anyone who gets in the way of his deals, from fellow criminals who attempt to turn on him, to innocent witnesses, having his men hospitalize McQuade's daughter Sally and murder her boyfriend after they see his men enact a murderous hijacking of a military convoy. Rawley personally murders Texas Ranger Dakota and criminal Snow once Snow lets loose on Rawley's own deals, sees McQuade's pet wolf shot by his goon as a warning, and buries McQuade alive in his own car after he continues to intrude on his business. Once McQuade continues to interfere, Rawley kidnaps his daughter and later mortally wounds his own girlfriend Lola, who confesses Rawley killed her husband and forced her to be his partner under the threat of her life.
  • The Minion (1998): The Minion is a demonic entity with a penchant for hijacking bodies. Desiring to release The Antichrist from his imprisonment, the Minion gleefully sets out to acquire a key, knowing that doing so would result in the destruction of the world. The Minion takes possession of several hosts during its pursuit of the key. Whether it's using a police officer to massacre the entirety of the police department or forcing a possessed Bernhard into decimating The Knights Templar, the Minion left a trail of death in its wake. Realizing that Lukas Sadorov and Mohawk archaeologist Karen Goodleaf were intending on disposing of the key at a nuclear waste facility, the Minion murders Michael Bear—Karen's grandfather—and masquerades as him in a feeble attempt at deceiving Lukas into giving him the key. Fanatical and vicious, the Minion desired nothing less than pure, unadulterated chaos.
  • Resurrection (1999): Gerald Demus is a religiously-motivated Serial Killer who wants to recreate the body of Christ in time for the resurrection on Easter by assembling it from stolen body parts. He performs one murder for each body part—limbs, head, torso—with six planned victims total. Chicago P.D. homicide detective John Prudhomme eventually tracks down Demus and interrupts one of his rituals, but is too late to save his latest victim, who dies of massive trauma and blood loss in John's arms. After a pursuit, Demus captures John's partner and dresses him up in his own disguise so he can get away and the cops will shoot one of their own. The unfortunate detective needs to have his leg removed, which Demus later steals to make up for lost time. Deciding that John personally must be punished for his interference, Demus breaks into John's home to murder his wife and sends him a taped message informing him of this, only to kill his wife's best friend by mistake and leaving the body behind for John to find. After he completes the body of Christ, he heads over to a maternity ward to sacrifice a newborn child, killing several nurses and orderlies along the way.
  • Charlie Baker, from season 4's "Dominance", had in the past raped his brother Billy, and then beat up his alcoholic father when they were caught; Charlie continues to beat his father. In the span of a week, Charlie has either killed, or manipulated the weak-willed Billy into killing, around 10 people, but not before forcing them to have sex with each other first. Then he kidnapped two women, killed their boyfriends, and kept them captive on a roof.
  • Luke Dixon, from season 8's "Confrontation", is among the more heinous serial rapists in the series. As he thinks that children with imperfections shouldn't be accepted by the public, he tries to create a "Master Race" by impregnating his victims. He operates by using master keys to break in his victims house, forcing them to urinate so he could know their menstrual cycles, and raping them again at the day of ovulation. Dixon has done so to 19 women, including one that he murdered after she confronted him, and another who has been raped thrice and committed suicide due to the emotional trauma. Finally, before getting arrested, Dixon attempted to kill Detective Dani Beck with a knife. With the unique nature of his crimes taking Rape Is A Special Kindof Evil to a new level, Luke Dixon, despite not having an inordinately large number of victims, managed to stand out in a series dealing with sexual crimes.
  • Heart-Shaped Box: Craddock McDermott was an occultist and hypnotist in life who got a thrill out of tormenting prisoners in the Vietnam War, in one instance forcing an officer to cut off his own fingers. Upon his return to the US, Craddock began to sexually abuse his stepdaughters, utilizing hypnosis to make them more willing should they refuse. When one of the girls, Anna, escaped and became the lover of former rockstar Judas "Jude" Coyne, she eventually returned after breaking up with Jude and refused to be Craddock's Sex Slave any longer. Craddock convinced her sister Jessica to help murder Anna and make it look like a suicide while also convincing Jessica to allow Craddock to molest Jessica's own daughter Reese. When dying, Craddock blamed Jude for taking away what belonged to him and had Jessica trick Jude into purchasing Craddock's ghost by way of a cursed suit. Craddock proceeds to kill Jude's assistant Danny and attempts to murder him and his girlfriend Georgia. At the end, he even possesses Jude's abusive father to torment him, revealing a monstrous sadism and sick cruelty beneath the surface of a seemingly polite, kindly old man.
  • Wynonna Earp: Jack of Blades is the last of the Seven and the nastiest Revenant in the series. A Serial Killer who killed multiple women before being put down by Wyatt Earp, Jack celebrates his return by murdering a woman on the side of the road, then promptly sets about killing whoever he can while corrupting a young doctor by convincing him that rearranging patients' organs can cure them of diseases, while Jack sits back and watches the carnage. Disposing of his erstwhile student, Jack attempts to vivisect Wynonna herself before being defeated. At the end, Jack proceeds to gloat she had succeeded where all of Scotland Yard failed: defeating Jack the Ripper himself.
Durham Red
  • When Durham Red, the vampiric mutant from Strontium Dog, reawakens over a thousand years in the future to find mutantkind warring with humanity, she rediscovers the lost earth and is contacted there by a powerful mutant known as The Offspring. The Offspring convinced Red to free it so it can stop the war, but we soon learn that it was imprisoned for those thousand years for a very good reason: when born, The Offspring had godlike powers but a complete disregard for life. The Offspring leaves Red and her friends for dead before infecting humanity with a plague that condemns the entire species to death. The Offspring then spends the next century going from world to world, massacring humans in increasingly inventive ways while instituting a horrible, fascist regime among the mutants where any weakness is immediately culled, resulting in countless deaths on both sides. When Red is back in action, she manages to lure the Offspring out by using the remnants of humanity as the bait, with the Offspring intending to massacre the species to the last before engaging Red, intending to rule the remaining mutants like a God and remake the galaxy in its own image.
Rogue Trooper
  • The Traitor General betrayed all of the genetically modified Genetic Infantrymen to their enemies, resulting in a massacre. When the last survivor, "Rogue," hunts him down and narrows his identity to one of four Generals, the Traitor has the space station they're on blown up and rigs the escape pods to burn the other generals alive. A glitch results in his own face being burnt and hideously disfigured. Killing his former masters, the traitor establishes a bandit group that preys on both sides of the war and later kills his own men when he is forced to flee again. Taking control of multiple robots, the Traitor then attacks medical units, killing doctors and patients, before escaping Rogue again by taking a hostage and breaking open his air supply, dooming the man to death in the poison atmosphere. When Rogue tracks him down yet again, he discovers the Traitor had manipulated the weather using another device to freeze two whole armies to death before he attempts to kill Rogue again.

What if the work in question is an RP that your friends play? I'm not talking about that RP that was taken down but I'm thinking of making an RP based on WOTW but with a little more freedom. In that the RP will be open to the public.

Could I suggest a character from that?

@Overlord: Because let's face it, a lot of bronies hate the fact the show is so idealistic and that nobody can theoretically qualify (but with Chrysalis rejecting redemption there's a possibility that not all villains will be redeemed and an example could pop up possibly in The Movie) and want to change the Sugar Bowl setting into a gritty dark setting of anti heroes with Equestria essentially becoming a dystopia ruled by a tyrant.
