Needs Help: Significant Sketchbook

To-do list:

    Original post
Significant Sketchbook has two completely separate concepts in one trope, 1) "a character's sketchbook adds a hidden dimension to them and makes them bond w/ another character", and 2) "a sketchbook, in general, has significance in various ways." Here are the wick check results.

  • Quick wick analysis:
    • 8 out of 53 are about the first usage, with 2 wicks being from an index and a trope's description, or 15%.
    • 8 out of 53 are about the second usage, or 15%.
    • 16 out of 53 are misuse — general usage outside the 2 concepts, or 30%.
    • 21 out of 53 are ZCEs, unclear, and misc., or 40%.

  • Long wick analysis:
    • The trope suffers from a lot of misuse and zero-context examples since they make up the most wicks. This shows that editors are confused about the trope's actual correct usage due to its unclear description.
    • As for the examples, the "sketchbook adds Hidden Depths/makes 2 characters bond" concept (I made examples of either case count to not be too pedantic/nitpicky) only has 6 examples in total, and the "sketchbooks have some significance in general" concept also has 8 examples. Put together, they make only 15 examples, meaning the trope is starving on wicks.
    • Some examples (6 in total) confuse this trope with Intimate Artistry.

Solutions:

  • Rework the trope into either of the two concepts and yard the other/send it to TLP.
  • Or rework the trope into a general "sketchbooks as significant plot devices" to catch both concepts but idk if this is tropeworthy/viable bc sketchbooks can be replaced with anything so they don't have a specific significance.
  • Or cut the trope.
  • Move examples about a character drawing their love interest to Intimate Artistry.

    Concept 1 — "Sketchbook adds a hidden dimension/makes 2 characters bond" (8/53)
  1. Bookish Tropes: Character A looks through Character B's sketchbook and learns something about them.
  2. Intimate Artistry: (Description), Related to Significant Sketchbook, which covers one character discovering that another has such a collection of art.
  3. Characters.Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous The Campers: Yasmina's folder, She carries around her personal sketchbook in Season 1 which contains a bunch of her sketches and allows her to bond with Sammy. She uses her sketching skills with her sketchbook in Season 2 to help design a base.
  4. Characters.Midsommar: His drawing is introduced as a casual hobby, but actually sheds light on some of his character and motivation.
  5. Film.Titanic 1997: Rose first sees Jack as he is sketching on the deck, and he shows her some of the drawings. Later, there is the famous scene where she requests that Jack sketch her in the nude (her, not Jack). Knowing the movie, it counts, but it lacks the required context/explanation esp since the 2nd sentence is more of Intimate Artistry
  6. Literature.Hidden Talents: Martin walks in on Trash drawing in his sketchbook, and this is one of the first things that shows that he's not the destructive lunatic that he first appears to be.
  7. Literature.Jane Eyre: Jane showed some of her drawings to Mr. Rochester upon their first conversation in drawing room. The latter chose three drawings he likes which foreshadowed their future relationship.
  8. Supernatural.Tropes Q To Z: In Season 4, mental patient Anna's accurate depictions of the coming apocalypse tell the brothers that she isn't crazy. Hidden Depths

Concept 2 — "Sketchbooks have some significance in general" (8/53)
  1. Characters.Power Rangers Beast Morphers: Ravi's fodler, Keeps a sketchbook in "Tuba Triumph". It's significant because it's how he keeps his love for Roxy alive (sketching pictures of her comatose self) and it plays a part in the episode's Aesop of being true to who you are.
  2. Characters.Private Actress: She possesses one, and Shiho takes peeks on it more than once to see if there are clues regarding her death. There are, and they're several pictures of Kana. Based on her entry, the pictures aren't romantic, so it fits here
  3. Characters. The Great: Leo's folder, Owns one and uses it to sketch while Catherine plots her coup. Later on, she recognises his drawing style from it when he distributes cartoons of her and Peter having sex. I think it belongs here? Don't know if this is significant enough
  4. Film.American Psycho: At the end of the film, Patrick Bateman's secretary finds his planner, which is filled with horrifying sketches of women being tortured, maimed and dismembered. Seems like a significant reveal + "creepy sketchbook"
  5. Manga.Tadokorosan: A relationship jump-starter for our Official Couple. In Chapter 3, Nikaidou wants to know what Tadokoro is drawing. In her haste to get away, Tadokoro drops her sketchbook with her sketch of Nikaidou (depicted as an Alpha Bitch) landing face-up. Nikaidou notices this and immediately asks for the sketch. Tadokoro refuses, but invites her to the abandoned Literature Club room so she can model for her to sketch her properly.
  6. Series.Hannibal: In "Buffet Froid," Hannibal asks Will to draw a clock face in a sketchbook. When he draws it, he thinks he sees a perfectly normal clock face, but Hannibal sees the numbers and hands jumbled up. This is an actual test used by psychiatrists to detect cognitive dysfunction. In "Savoureux," Alana asks Will to repeat the test to prove that he is mentally ill and did not consciously commit the murders for which he is accused, but the evidence is negligible as they realise he could have faked the test. Hannibal produces a normal drawing of clock face which he shows to Alana, claiming it was drawn by Will, when in reality he drew it himself.
  7. Supernatural.Tropes Q To Z: In early seasons, Daddy Winchester's journal, complete with illustrations, helps the brothers on their monster hunts. A sketchbook is significant by being helpful
  8. VideoGame. The Last Of Us Part II: Ellie's journal offers a grim look into her psyche throughout the game; some old entries are cute and innocent, such as wondering how the girls she's crushing on feel about her, but then after Joel is killed, it's filled with depressing poetry and angry ramblings. One thing to note is that she tries and fails to sketch out drawings of Joel—her sketches are missing eyes or incomplete. It's only at the very end of the game that she draws Joel out fully, in a gentle pose playing the guitar, indicating that she's worked through the pain and confusion she felt when thinking about him.

Misuse — Neither of the concepts (16/53)
  1. Book Snap: (Description), Being a relatively quick and loud gesture makes it the perfect way to interrupt the more passive action of reading (or writing, or drawing, or dictating or whatever the would-be literate was doing before they were so rudely interrupted). Just a pothole to drawing in general
  2. Anime.Star Twinkle Pretty Cure: Hikaru's notebook summons the fairy Fuwa and later transforms into the Twinkle Book. Notebook ≠ a sketchbook, also just a notebook doing something unusual
  3. Characters.Friday Night Lights: A sign of his Hidden Depths; Matt is no Jerk Jock. He's thoughtful, observant, talented, and at the end of the series has retired from football and is attending an art college in Chicago. Because going to art college = a sketchbook, right?
  4. Characters.Gayaverse: Aircraft Design Company Quest Main Characters' folder, Asuka notices the bar patrons in Albia start taking them much more seriously when they start sketching, bypassing the Language Barrier. Fits neither concepts
  5. Characters.Get Out 2017: Chris' folder, Chris's photography gives some insight into his personality and interests, and is considered to be quite profound by the gallery owner he speaks to at the party. No mention of a sketchbook
  6. Characters. The Fall: Under the Main folder, He keeps a creepy sketchbook filled with drawings and photographs of his victims. X has a creepy sketchbook
  7. ComicBook. The Backstagers: A sketchbook Jory finds as also magical as it can alter some of the Arch-Theater's properties as well as create things inside of it. Rample draws Tommy in it after he dies because he couldn't stand the thought of him being dead. A sketchbook has magical properties
  8. Fanfic.Consequences Miraculous Ladybug: Under the Bullying folder, The class tears up Marinette's sketchbook to convince Lila that they hate her. They later reveal that it was actually a blank one, filled with nonsense scribbles to make it look like her real one. Something happens/involves a sketchbook, which fits neither concepts
  9. Film.Ghost World: Seymour discovers Enid's sketchbook at one point, and feels crushed when he sees a portrait of himself portrayed as depressing and alone. Just a sketchbook scene; no Hidden Depths, no bonding
  10. Recap.Outlander S 4 E 11 If Not For Hope: Brianna uses charcoal to draw abstract pictures of her emotions. When Lizzie sees the pictures, all she sees is dark, scary pictures and she fears that she's contributed to breaking Brianna's soul and opened the door to her being possessed. Sketchbook causes a misunderstanding, doesn't seem significant to me
  11. Recap.Outlander S 5 E 2 Between Two Fires: After learning that Bonnet survived the jailhouse explosion, Bree finds herself continually drawing his face as she fears him coming after her or Jemmy. X subconsciously draws someone
  12. Recap.SK 8 The Infinity E 01 Snowfall On A Hot Night: Reki's sketchbook is shown in this episode with him doodling a sketch for his skateboard, writing notes on how to upgrade his board later, and his plans on how to beat Shadow next time. Seen it and it's just "work has a sketchbook scene"
  13. Recap. The Vampire Diaries S 01 E 10 The Turning Point: Jeremy has one where he sketches fantasy creatures, a hobby he had abandoned when his parents died. He starts sketching again this episode, Elena sees it as a sign of him stop grieving. X sketches as a hobby
  14. Series.Spaced: Daisy flips through Tim's sketchbook, growing increasingly alarmed as each page is filled with violent revenge fantasies Tim has drawn involving his ex-girlfriend. The final page shows Tim is happy again though - it's a drawing of him, Daisy and Colin the dog, titled "Happiness". Just a scene involving a sketchbook
  15. Series. The Fall: Spector keeps a scrapbook/sketchbook filled with disturbing drawings and keepsakes from his murders. Repeated example + "creepy sketchbook"
  16. Webcomic.Cheese In The Trap: Subverted. Instead of revealing something about Ah Young, her sketchbook causes a misunderstanding. As an artist Ah Young finds Jung to be a good subject, so she sketches him quite a bit. Jun takes a peek at her notebook and thinks that she likes him. He runs off promising her that he won't tell Sul. In reality Ah Young is strongly implied to have feelings for Jun himself. A shoehorn since it's a misunderstanding + seems to be a Played With example of Intimate Artistry

    ZCE/Unclear/Other (21/53)
  1. Characters.Confession Executive Committee: Under the Class 3- 2 folder, Iconic Item: Her red book, seen throughout her time in high school as a Significant Sketchbook and in some of the P Vs as a yearbook. Just a character owning a sketchbook
  2. Characters.Degrassi The Next Generation Grade 11 Class: Saad's folder, Saad's photography gives a lot of insight into his past, and the way he processes trauma. It's what draws Maya to him initially. Is it a photography sketchbook? Just photography? Who knows
  3. Characters.Erica: Erica's entry, Has a notebook full of drawings of her parents and the visions she has during her dreams. "X has a notebook/sketchbook" doesn't belong to either folder and this needs more context
  4. Characters.IDROCR Angikuni Village: Under the male students' folder, Usually carries one with him. — Under the female students' folder, Like Katashi, she owns one as well. Self-explanatory
  5. Characters.Kemono Friends: Main Characters (season 2), His drives up where the gang goes in season 2. ??
  6. Characters.Pop N Music: Folder "M", Mutsuki's entry, Well, he seems to be always carrying one. Just a character having one
  7. Characters.Shimoneta: Otome's folder, She always has her sketchbook with her to hide her lewd drawings. Just a character having one
  8. Fanfic.Daily Equestria Life With Monster Girl: Invoked. As of Chapter 22, Cerea is keeping one as to have something she can bring back with her if she ever gets to go home. (It's directly said that she was inspired by reading The Dungeon sextet as a filly — and also that she hated the way it ended.) However, to date, all she's done is draw images of Japan and the other liminal girls. It's also implied that she's having a lot of trouble with the first sketch in the book — which is revealed in Chapter 74 to be a sketch of Kimihito Kurusu, and she's never gotten his eyes right. X has one along with irrelevant context
  9. Fanfic.Danny Phantom Stranded: Star has a sketchbook she keeps and hides from her friends. She happens to have a certain drawing she wishes to keep secret. It's Danny, shirtless, when they were on the island. This is Intimate Artistry
  10. Film.DEBS: Amy is an aspiring artist. One scene shows her drawing a picture of her girlfriend Lucy while in class, which shows she's still attracted to her even though their relationship is forbidden. When she sees another student looking at the picture she gets embarrassed and closes the book. Intimate Artistry
  11. Film.Paul: Being an illustrator, Graeme does several sketches along the way, including one of Paul Flipping the Bird. Character sketches things
  12. Film.Unknown 2011: Gina has one. Okay, and?
  13. Literature.Kroniki Drugiego Kregu: Nocny Śpiewak translation  is an accomplished artist. His and Kamyk's dorm is filled with Śpiewak's drawings of architecture and girls (his two major interests). X draws things
  14. Recap.Doctor Who S 29 E 8 Human Nature: John Smith dreams of his adventures as a Time Lord, drawing/recording them in a journal. X draws things he dreams of
  15. Recap.Stargirl 2020 S 2 E 05 Summer School Chapter Five: Cameron shows Courtney her sketchbook, and she finds the drawings of her inside. She's extremely flattered, telling him he can sketch her anytime. Intimate Artistry
  16. Recap. The 100 S 01 E 07: Lincoln's notebook. It reveals he has been watching the 100's camp, as well as Octavia in particular. Unclear — does it have drawings?
  17. Series.Kamen Rider Kabuto: Hiyori spends much of the early episodes doodling in one. Her drawings foreshadow later plot developments. Needs more context because this seems like Chekhov's Gun
  18. Series.Shtisel: Akiva's notebook is shown in the intro of each episode, and when looking through it, Fuchs notices his most detailed drawing is of Elisheva, hinting at Akiva's true feelings. Intimate Artistry
  19. Series. The 100: The series opens with an introduction to Clarke's artistic inclination, but during the constant conflict she is not able to indulge her hobby after being sent to the ground. Once she begins to settle into Polis, she begins to keep a collection of sketches, including one of Lexa drawn while she was asleep. This example is already on Intimate Artistry + doesn't seem they bonded over it if they already were close with each other'
  20. VideoGame.Hometown Story: Harvey's sketchbook is important to his storyline after he dies. How is it important?
  21. Website.Grindhouse And Watercolors: Novel of the Dolls and Book of Shadows. ????

  • Quick wick analysis:
    • 8 out of 53 are about the first usage, with 2 wicks being from an index and a trope's description, or 15%.
    • 8 out of 53 are about the second usage, or 15%.

I don't mind splitting this trope into both concepts and sending both to the TLP or yard, actually.

Cutting and Yarding the two (or sending to TLP if we find a sponsor) sounds good.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

I think the first variation is tropeworthy and this trope can be written to be just about that/it can be split off. But i don't see much of a trope about "sketchbooks are significant for reasons". The same could be said for any object. The trope is in the reasons and I'm not seeing a consistent enough one here.

[up]I agree that that category is potentially too broad, now that you mention it, but at least the fact that Yarding is a free action means I'm more concerned with the cut votes than the Yard votes.

[up][up] From the wick sample there's only 5 examples of the first concept excluding indexes and mentions in other tropes' descriptions, so it'd need a trip to TLP to gather examples first if we want it to be launched.

BTW, it seems like this trope didn't go through TLP since there's no archived discussion nor a YKTTW archive, and the wayback machine doesn't link to anything useful, so this might explain why this trope has issues.

[up] I actually replied to your discussion tab post about that. This didn’t go through TLP — the troper who created this page (according to their troper page) doesn’t have the page in their TLP history.

I think the "two concepts" in the first bullet point in the Solutions category are "Hidden Depths" and "makes two characters bond", not "Hidden Depths/makes two characters bond" and "significant for any reason".

On that note, though, "significant" feels like it's becoming a borderline Loaded Trope Word amounting to "this definitely isn't People Sit on Chairs you guys, it even says it's specifically for significant sitting on chairs!" It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the ZCEs are basically "sketchbooks exist".

[up] That's true; some of the ZCEs are just "character owns a sketchbook."

[up][up]been feeling this way for quite some time.

[up][up][up][up] if that's the case then barring anyone wanting to TLP it now, that idea can get yarded. still don't think the second one is anything much. so I guess I'm voting for cut.

I mean, the trope would get cut regardless; I just think that it's at least possible for both ideas to be salvaged and taken to TLP, even if they're ultimately declared unviable.

[up]I initially didn't realize there were less than 10 examples for the first idea, so my initial post said I was in favor of potentially reworking this page into that idea, i.e. a redefine and not a cut. I was clarifying my new position in light of the new (to me) info

That's fair, I'm just pointing out that if we do my idea, the actual trope would be axed, since it hasn't really been brought up at all.

Cut. Don't think the yarding concepts have to be limited to sketchbooks, these can be broadened to "an item of Hidden Depths" and "Plot Device drawing" as still be possible tropes.

There's a thing about sketchbooks bc they contain drawings that can reveal a lot about the owner's personality, mentality/mood, etc.

"Plot Device drawing" is very vague and isn't significant/tropeworthy when anyting can be a Plot Device and drawings aren't unique to this. Same for "an item of Hidden Depths". Sketchbooks can include disturbing drawings, drawing someone and another discovers it and the two characters bond over the sketchbook drawings, etc.

[up]That seems like Art Reflects Personality. Sketchbooks are just a personal collection of art

Oh yeah, that trope covers the art = personality concept, but none (or most) of the examples are (not) about personality, as much as it adds a hidden depth in a way that allows 2 characters to bond together.

Maybe there's a bigger trope about art in general here and maybe it's already covered by other tropes, ig.

Art Reflects Personality lacking examples about the personality is a problem of those examples. If the concept works, we can use it for the first suggestion.

[up][up]I don't think those two are separate concepts, tbh. Art Reflects Personality is broadly about the idea that a person's true character is shown through their art. Even if it's Hidden Depths, it's still the character's personality being revealed/reflected in their art.

And seeing as there are only 8 examples like that in the wick check (2 of which are just mentions on an index and in the description of Intimate Artistry and only 3 mention bonding), I think it makes sense to just move the examples over.

ETA: Also, if the sketch book is supposed to show that a character is emotionally sensitive and intuitive those examples can go to Sensitive Artist.

Trope Repair Shop: Significant Sketchbook
5th Apr '23 1:53:53 AM

Crown Description:

Significant Sketchbook has two completely separate concepts in one trope, 1) "a character's sketchbook adds a hidden dimension to them and makes them bond w/ another character", and 2) "a sketchbook, in general, has significance in various ways." However, the trope suffers from a lot of misuse and zero-context examples since they make up the most wicks, showing that editors are confused about the trope's actual correct usage due to its unclear description, the "sketchbook adds Hidden Depths/makes 2 characters bond" concept only has 6 examples in total while the "sketchbooks have some significance in general" concept also has 8 examples (making only 15 examples, meaning the trope is starving on wicks), and some examples (6 in total) confuse this trope with Intimate Artistry. What should be done with Significant Sketchbook?
