Tropes for the characters of Kemono Friends. ALL SPOILERS ARE UNMARKED.
General
- Animal Eyes: Some of the Friends have pupils shaped like those of their original species (i.e. Alpaca has horizontal pupils).
- Animal Gender-Bender: Animals turned into Friends by Sandstar are female regardless of the original sex, which leads to some of them exhibiting male characteristics (manes, horns/antlers, etc.)
- Back for the Finale:
- Most of the plot-important Friends make a return in episode 12 of Season 1.
- It happens again in Episode 11 of Season 2, when Kaban drives almost all of the friends that Kyururu and company met to the undersea hotel that they were currently at.
- Badass Adorable: They may be cute girls, but they're also wild animals, and while they don't hunt each other anymore, they still need to fight for their lives against Celliens. Thus, everyone from a solitary hunter to a mild-mannered tea shop owner to an idol unit can and will beat up monsters on the regular.
- The Berserker: Some animals end up having an adverse effect to Sandstar, becoming Beasts instead of Friends. This causes this trope to happen to them.
- A Dog Named "Dog": All of the Friends are named for the species of animal they are. The PPP, who are Legacy Characters using stage names, and Kaban, who's named after her bag, are the sole exceptions.
- Fossil Revival: The Sandstar can create Friends from animal remains, effectively becoming this.
- Fur Is Clothing: Played With; all Friends fall into Little Bit Beastly territory and wear human clothes, but they refer to their clothing as "fur" and are unaware that they can take it off until Kaban points it out to them.
- Furry Reminder: Even in their new form, Friends still exhibit behaviors of their original species.
- Immortality: Although supplemental material had suggested it for years. Episode 1 of season 2 fully confirms that Friends are biologically immortal. As long as they are not killed or absorbed by Celliens, they can essentially live forever.
- However, the Beast (Amur Tiger) is said to have only 1/10 of the other Friends’ lifespans despite having lived for what is apparently 2,000 years.
- Improbably Female Cast: All the known characters besides Kyururu are female or non-organic.
- Little Bit Beastly: Friends are essentially human with some features of whatever animal they were previously. In a bit of Played for Drama, some Friends end up more animal than human, becoming Beasts instead.
- Never Learned to Read: Friends are incapable of reading. This is one of the features that makes Kaban stand out.
- Our Zombies Are Different: The Sandstar can apparently turn the remains of animal into Friends. This could explain why some of the Friends are extinct animals.
- Single Specimen Species: Only one of each species of Friends appear in the anime, with the exception of Serval with Kaban and Serval with Mirai. Some rules apply to subspecies or color variants.
- Super Mode:
- Apparently, every Friend has access to a wild side, which makes them stronger in some way. All of the Friends excluding Kaban exhibit this in Episode 12. Also present in the mobile game.
- Beasts seem to have this form by default, making them more dangerous.
- Vegetarian Carnivore: All the Friends eat Japari buns, which are found everywhere. This allows carnivores and omnivores to be friends with herbivores without all that awkward killing and eating that would hurt friendships. It also helps that they are essentially human for the most part and can now eat a wider variety of food such as curry.
Recurring Characters
Kaban (Homo sapiens sapiens)

The heroine of the story. She suddenly woke up one day in Japari Park not knowing where she or who she was, and set off on an adventure through the park to learn what kind of Friend she was. Although she can't fly, climb or swim as well as the other Friends, she is incredibly resourceful and quick-thinking. She's effectively a successor to the original franchise's Mirai character, being literally born with (and from) Mirai's hat.
- Adrenaline Makeover: In her season 2 appearance, she looks much more mature and adult. Her hair has grown enough to fit into a ponytail and her hat is tattered.
- Artificial Human: Kaban is actually a human Friend born from Sandstar coming in contact with a hair that was on Mirai's hat. This is also the reason why she survives being inside the Cellien. She was supposed to revert to the original animal she was based on...which was, well, human.
- Amnesiac Hero: She woke up having no idea who or what she is. As it turns out, she didn't have much history to begin with, being some hair that was still attached to Mirai's lost hat.
- Big Damn Heroes: Was initially absent in the first five episodes of Season 2, but then returns in episode 6 to rescue Kyururu from a tiger Friend.
- Bokukko: Changed in Season 2.
- Boyish Short Hair: With a bit of Messy Hair.
- Catchphrase: "Tabenaide kudasai!!" (Please don't eat me!) Becomes a Brick Joke during season 2 when Serval and Caracal find Kyururu, uttered by the two feline Friends.
- Chekhov's Skill: Learns tree-climbing from Serval, which comes in handy a few times later.
- Line-of-Sight Name: Kaban is named by Serval for the backpack she is wearing ("kaban" being Japanese for "bag").
- Heroic Sacrifice:
- When they were interrogated by Lion, Kaban was ready to be eaten in Serval's stead... But Lion wasn't even dreaming about eating any of them and the whole stern leader attitude was just a front.
- She sacrifices herself to save Serval in Episode 11. Luckily, she gets better.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Only known as Kaban. It might as well BE her name...
- Put on a Bus: Kaban separated from Serval in between seasons 1 and 2 in order to make room for Kyururu. Is unknown why however. But then she returns in episode 5 of Season 2.
- Really Was Born Yesterday: She's existed for, at most, a few days following the last Sandstar eruption.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: the Blue to Serval's Red.
- Shaped Like Itself: She's the Cute Girl version of a Cute Girl. Specifically, she's a Friend version of Mirai, the original park guide.
- Shrinking Violet: But she isn't afraid to get physical if needed to.
- Signature Headgear: Always wears a tattered white pith hat with a feather in it. This feather is what makes Lucky Beast respond to her with the Mirai recordings.
- The final episodes reveal that it IS literally Mirai's hat, and Kaban is effectively a Friend born from the hat!
- Took a Level in Badass: In season 2.
- The Watson: Often takes the role with Serval.
- Weak, but Skilled: She doesn't have any special physical traits, such as flight or physical strength. She is, however, knowledgeable enough to create things, and assign team roles to other Friends.
Serval (Leptailurus serval)

Kaban's adventuring companion. She's energetic and known as a troublemaker amongst the Friends of the Savannah, but she's also incredibly kindhearted. After befriending Kaban, she decides to join her on her Quest for Identity.
- Cat Girl: A serval to be exact.
- Cat Smile: Not as frequent as you'd expect from a Cat Girl, but she does show this from time-to-time (like in Episode 5).
- Catchphrase:
- "Su~goi!!" (Amazing!!) The English dub localizes it as "ameowzing".
- Also "Tabenai yo!" (I won't eat you!) in response to Kaban's own. Becomes a Brick Joke during season 2 when she and Caracal find Kyururu, uttered by the latter.
- Chekhov's Skill: Remember the paper airplanes that she got from Kaban in the first episode? She flies them (on fire, to boot) to distract the Black Cellien and lead it towards the boat. It's also what triggers her own Super Mode.
- Constantly Curious: Frequently responding with her catch phrase with any new discovery.
- Genki Girl: "Fun" is practically her catch-phrase. Infamous across the park as a troublemaker.
- I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: Doesn't understand why she starts crying when seeing the hologram of Mirai.
- Multiple-Choice Past: She is equally implied to be the Serval seen with Mirai, or to be another Serval named Alex who debuted in the Sega smartphone game.
- Non-Human Sidekick: Serves as this to Kaban.
- Older and Wiser: Even thought Serval is still ditzy in season 2 she is very much the one calling the shots between the main trio compared to before when she was clearly Kaban's sidekick.
- Older Than They Look: It was already ambiguous how old Serval was in the first anime. But Season 2 essentially makes her a borderline case of The Older Immortal.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Kaban and Caracal's Blue.
- Super Strength: Can lift and jump with the cab of a tour bus.
- The Watson: If Kaban isn't asking the questions, she would be.
- Wistful Amnesia: It's implied that she is possibly the same Serval that she saw in the hologram with Mirai—explaining her emotional reaction to it—but she was eaten by a Cellien at some point and lost her memories. Downplayed during season 2, where she remembers travelling with Kaban but can't remember much about her except that she was a human Friend.
Kyururu (Homo Ludens)

- Identity Amnesia: He doesn't know who he is nor where he came from.
- Mundane Made Awesome: Makes simple games like jigsaw puzzles and paper sumo appeal to Friends.
- The One Guy: He's currently the only male character to show up in either season (Lucky Beast and the Celliens have no gender and thus don't count either way).
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Ends up earning the nickname "Kyururu" after his tummy growls just after being asked what his name was. Possibly is the "Ai" who left the letters in Domestic Dog's safe, a name that matches the blue color scheme.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Basically fills up the role Kaban served in season 1. However, while Kaban made herself important by using skills exclusive to humans, Kyururu helps the Friends have more fun in their common lives by Mundane Made Awesome.
- Weak, but Skilled: Just like Kaban before him, he's quiet but he's plucky enough to help all Friends he encounters.
Caracal (Caracal caracal)

A new character introduced in season 2, she's a feline who lives in the same habitat as Serval.
- Cat Girl: She's a caracal.
- Cats Hate Water: She has an aversion to water.
- Fiery Redhead
- Non-Human Sidekick: Serves as this to Kyururu along with Kaban.
- Only Sane Woman: She tries, but Kyururu and Serval's antics end up dragging her all the time.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Serval's Red.
- Remember the New Guy?: May come across as this to viewers of the first season, where she wasn't even a supporting character. Her first anime appearance was in the Welcome to Japari Park shorts, which started airing much later.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Serval's girly girl.
Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

One of the Friends of Another Story. She is searching for a thief who stole something apparently precious, and is following the footsteps of Serval and Kaban to do so. She's often a little bit too quick to jump to conclusions.
- Hero-Worshipper: She comes to idolize Kaban as she and Fennec travel around the park and hears the stories from other Friends about her deeds.
- Irony: Since raccoons have a reputation for being thieves or bandits, her pursuit of a thief comes across as this.
- Rascally Raccoon: Subverted, as she's more hotheaded than mischievous.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Fennec's Blue. It's clear from her loud, aggressive tone and tendency to run headfirst.
- Those Two Girls: Always seen with Fennec.
- Verbal Tic: She ends her phrase of "nano da"
Fennec (Vulpes zerda)

One of the Friends of Another Story. She acts as the companion to Raccoon and tries to keep her more airheaded companion in check.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Follows Raccoon around and takes care of her, and mentions she's gotten good at determining direction since she has to find where she's run off to.
- Perpetual Smiler: Pretty much always has a slight smile on her face regardless of what's going on.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Raccoon's Red. She talks and acts lazily, and is more levelheaded.
- Those Two Girls: Always seen with Raccoon.
Arma (Priodontes maximus)
- Ambiguous Situation: It's currently unknown if she's the same giant armadillo from Moose's army in Season 1.
- Cowardly Lion: A simple spook causes her to roll up like an armadillo.
- So What Do We Do Now?: After giving Kyururu to their client, she has no idea on what to do next since they need clients for their job as detectives. Although this is only brief as in the next episode they receive a request from Raccoon and Fennec in finding Celliens that resemble Friends.
- Those Two Guys: Is always seen with Sen.
Sen (Smutsia gigantea)
- Cowardly Lion: A simple spook causes her to roll up like a pangolin.
- Rolling Attack: Arma gets her to roll up so she can throw her at a pack of Celliens, eliminating them one by one.
- So What Do We Do Now?: After giving Kyururu to their client, she has no idea on what to do next since they need clients for their job as detectives. Although this is only brief as in the next episode they receive a request from Raccoon and Fennec in finding Celliens that resemble Friends.
- Those Two Guys: Is always seen with Arma.
One Shot Friends
Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)

A Friend who lives at the watering hole. She's a bit of a worrywart.
- Boobs of Steel: An indicator of her being one of the strongest Friends so far.
- Huggy, Huggy Hippos: She lives up to the popular image of hippos as Gentle Giants, when in reality hippos are among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
- Sensual Spandex: Aptly wears a wet suit.
- Super Strength: Can overpower a large Cellien. It makes a lot of sense since she's a hippo.
- Team Mom: Acts like this towards Serval and Kaban.
Zebra (Equus quagga)
Thomson's Gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii)
Small-clawed Otter (Amblonyx cinereus)

A Friend who plays in the jungle river. She helps to rebuild the Japari Bus.
- Catchphrase: "Tanoshii!" (Fun!)
- Playful Otter: If the others are standing around talking she's likely goofing off in the background.
- Pretty in Mink
- Walking Swimsuit Scene
Jaguar (Panthera onca)

A Friend who has great swimming ability and provides a ferry service to other Friends.
- Cats Hate Water: Averted, and Truth in Television since real jaguars actually like water and are good swimmers.
- Pretty in Mink
-
Memetic Mutation: Her quote "Wakaran." (I don't get it.) when talking about the Japari Bus became her catchphrase in the fandom.
Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)
- Bit Character: Her only scene consists of her sleeping in a tree.
- Not a Morning Person: She's nocturnal.
Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus)
- Bit Character: She only appears passing by, eating a Japari bun.
Fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox)
- Nice Girl: For a Fossa she is quite friendly.
Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus)
- Gentle Giant: Calm and friendly.
- Honorable Elephant: She lives up to the calm, refined reputation of elephants.
- Stripperific: She walks around wearing only a bikini.
Axis Deer (Axis axis)
- Bit Character: Appears in a single scene licking the dirt to gain salt.
King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah)
- Bit Character: She only appears for a few seconds as a shot.
Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla)
- Bit Character: She only appears for a few seconds as a shot.
Peafowl (Pavo cristatus)
- Bit Character: She only appears for a few seconds as a shot.
- Peacock Girl: As the result of the Sandstar turning a peacock into a Friend.
Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)
- Bit Character: She only appears for a few seconds as a shot.
Frilled Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii)
- Bit Character: She only appears for a few seconds as a shot.
Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)
- Bit Character: Although not in the stage play, in which the literal new Friend is suddenly thrust into an adventure with Serval within a few minutes of her existence.
Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon)

A red-colored bird Friend who lives near the mountains and flies Kaban up to the cafe. She loves to sing, but she isn't very good at it.
- Cute, but Cacophonic: Her singing can really scare off other Friends to a point that even Celliens will appear to stop her from singing. However, her voice becomes better after drinking tea made by Alpaca.
-
Ensemble Dark Horse: One of the more popular Friends in the franchise.
- Hair Wings: Just like every other bird Friends.
- "I Want" Song: She sings about wanting to find friends. As the Crested Ibis is an endangered species, this takes on an additional meaning.
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Downplayed and Lampshaded. While her current wings are much smaller than her original ones as an actual ibis, she mentions that it's actually easier to maneuver in her current form, and has no trouble flying with Kaban in tow.
- Reflectionless Useless Eyes: As with other extinct animals. This reflects on the Crested Ibis being extinct in Japan, with the remaining population being found in China.
Alpaca Suri (Vicugna pacos)

An Alpaca Friend who is the owner of a café in the top of the mountains. Since the cafe is in the middle of the mountains, she doesn't get a lot of customers.
- Catchphrase: "Welcome to Japari Café."
- Motor Mouth: Really likes talking about what beverages are served at the Japari Café.
- Peek A Bangs: Covers her right eye.
- Pretty in Mink: Well, technically it's her wool.
- Spiteful Spit: Truth in Television as Alpacas are known to do this when upset.
Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber)
A red-headed bird Friend that appeared late in the episode.
- Hair Wings
- Palette Swap: Minus a different eye shape (because her species isn't endangered) she looks almost identical to Crested Ibis and just lacks the white shading on her design.
Sand Cat (Felis margarita)

A Sand Cat Friend who lives in the desert area. She has a short attention span.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Chases after whatever catches her curiosity and just as quickly lose interest in it.
- Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Hums part of the ending theme while digging.
- "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Voices the ending theme "Boku no Friend"note
Tsuchinoko

A cryptid snake Friend who is researching the human ruins in the desert area. She's rather secretive.
- Adventurer Archaeologist: Very interested in the vanished humans and their culture.
- Bokukko
- Hot-Blooded: Very passionate about her interest in exploring the ruins.
- Mood-Swinger: Goes from normal to defensive and aggressive at the drop of a hat.
- No Indoor Voice: Is constantly shouting.
- Our Cryptids Are More Mysterious: No known living specimen of a tsuchinoko has actually been discovered.
- Shrinking Violet: Is prone to hiding, alluding to the cryptozoological status of the tsuchinoko.
- Snakes Are Sinister: Averted. She is moody, but by no means an antagonist.
- Wham Line: Makes an offhanded remark about Kaban that drops a pretty large hint about the backstory.
- Youkai: Unlike most of the Friends whom are come from real animals, she is based from a youkai in a Japanese mythology.
American Beaver (Castor canadensis)

A beaver Friend who is trying to build a home. She tends to get so caught up in planning that she never actually builds anything.
- Badass Boast: "I'm good at building things."
- Composite Character: Her design is a combination of the game's version of the American Beaver and the Eurasian Beaver.
- Verbal Tic: Shortens "desu" to "su"
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus)

A prairie dog Friend who is trying to build a home. She's a fast worker, but her lack of planning tends to get her into trouble.
- Forceful Kiss: Does this as a greeting, similarly to prairie dogs in nature.
- Leeroy Jenkins: Often gets in trouble because she charges in without any hesitation.
- Magic Skirt: Although it applies to every character, it's most obvious with her considering how often she finds herself upside-down in a hole.
- No Indoor Voice
- No Sense of Personal Space
- Pretty in Mink
- Super Speed: Able to work at absurd speeds.
- Verbal Tic: "-de arimasu."
Lion (Panthera leo)

The leader of her army, and Moose's rival. Although she acts as a serious leader to her soldiers, in private she just wants to relax and doesn't want anyone to get hurt.
- Becoming the Mask: A variation. Her serious leader act is still a facade, and she still doesn't want anyone seriously injured. However, despite her initial willingness to lose, she is just as eager as Moose is to engage in a duel.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Lion is friendly, yet pretty lazy... But as seen in Episode 12, she shown a more aggressive persona when she heard that Kaban sacrifice her life for Serval.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite her initial appearance, she wants nothing more than to laze around all day (just like in real life). However, she is more insightful and mature than she lets on, showing concern over possible injuring during their battle, and even willing to lose outright to end it. She is also the one to suggest Kaban and Serval to go to the Moose's side to let them win for once.
- King of Beasts: Played with. Lion is in charge of a group of Friends and acts noble (though more shogun than king), but in private acts like a fairly normal cat.
- Panthera Awesome: She is a lion.
- Power Makes Your Voice Deep: Her voice drops to a menacing contralto as she activates her wild side and attacks the Cellien in the season finale. This is emphasized even more since moments before she was graciously thanking Crested Ibis for flying her into battle.
Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx)
A member of Lion's army.
- Apologetic Attacker: After she accidentally broke Moose's 'neck' after attacking her decoy, Serval.
- Blade on a Stick: Her weapon is a spear with tips shaped like an oryx's horns.
Auroch (Bos primigenius)

A member of Lion's army.
- Apologetic Attacker: She's just as horrified as Oryx is when it looked like the latter knocked the head off of Moose (actually a hat worn by Serval while she posed as Moose's decoy).
- Blade on a Stick: Her weapon is a spear with tips shaped like an Auroch's horns.
- Evil Sounds Deep: Played with. While not evil, she did have a low tone voice.
- Mildly Military: Dressed in Camo, possible reference to a nazi experiment (their only not evil one) to resurrect the species.
- Reflectionless Useless Eyes: Due to her species being extinct.
Japanese Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus)
A member of Lion's Army. Seen guarding the castle's flank.
- Bit Character: When compared to the other Friends in the Prairie, she gets a very small role.
Moose (Alces alces)

The leader of her army, and Lion's rival. Although powerful in her own right, her general plan for attack has led to her army suffering 51 defeats in a row.
- Blood Knight: She does not care about winning their war as much as actually getting to fight Lion. In fact, their war started because she wanted to do just that.
- Hot-Blooded
- Leeroy Jenkins: Her idea of a battle strategy is to charge right into the battle ground, something that at least two members of the team aren't suited for, and run into the waiting hands of Lion's army, resulting in 51 consecutive losses and no wins. In the 52nd battle, near the castle, she forgoes stealth and announces her presence to the gate guard to challenge her. Even the guard is shocked. This makes some sense, given that charging straight at the foe to gore them with their antlers would probably be the most effective combat tactic for a normal moose.
- Moose Are Idiots: Played with, as she's more Hot-Blooded than stupid. Although her idea of battle strategy as simply charging directly into battles may be out of instinct and force of habit, since moose fight by charging straight at their foes as mentioned above.
Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus)
A member of Moose's army.
- Stone Wall: Slightly weaker than Rhinoceros. But the thick skin on her elbow nullifies Oryx's attack.
White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)

A member of Moose's army. Wears a heavy suit of armor that makes her look like a knight.
- Blade on a Stick: Has a spear with both ends that resemble rhino horns. Though one end is much bigger than the other, similar to how an African rhino's frontal horn is larger than the rear horn.
- Regal Ringlets: Has this style to go with her knight image.
- Rhino Rampage: Subverted though in that she's not particularly aggressive or ill-tempered. Makes sense as white rhinos are docile for the most part.
- Stone Wall: Her armor makes her this. This is the reason why Moose's style doesn't work for her, and why she becomes that much stronger when focusing on defense.
- Verbal Tic: When she chases Serval around in the mock duel, she repeatedly yells the Japanese version of "Rhino".White Rhinocerous: Sai sai sai sai saaai!! Omachinasaai! (Stop right there!)
Crested Porcupine (Hystrix cristata)
A member of Moose's army. She serves as referee during mock battles between Moose's army.
- Combat Referee: During the mock battle in Moose's army, on the actual fighting she joins the fight.
Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis)

A member of Moose's army. Her specialty is stealth.
- Hoist by Her Own Petard: Although she manages to take out Black Bear with her caltrops, one of them also lands on her own ball, popping it.
- Hollywood Chameleons: Her ability to change color is treated as total invisibility. She uses ability to sneak into Lion's fort.
- Ninja: Essentially this after being allowed to use her ability to the fullest.
- Shrinking Violet: On the same level as Kaban. This changed after discovering her potential as a Ninja.
- Verbal Tic: "~de gozaru". She's a ninja after all.
Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex)

A member of Moose's army. She looks intimidating, but that's only due to her piercing stare.
- Catchphrase: "Jiiiii~~~~~~", better known as the Japanese onomatopoeia for staring.
- Death Glare: Subverted. She first appears by staring intensely at Kaban and Serval, but actually intends no harm. It's Truth in Television too—shoebills actually do look like that in real life
◊.
- Face of a Thug: Despite her scary glare, she's actually quite sweet and has a higher pitched voice.
- Hair Wings: Although not as noticeable as with the other bird Friends.
- Mildly Military: Dressed in Camo like Auroch.
- Wham Line: Gives the one behind the whole series in the form of a question.Shoebill: You there, are you...a human?
Northern White-Faced Owl (Ptilopsis leucotis)

A professor who resides in the Japari Library. She, along with her assistant, study humans. In the original game her given name is Konoha.
- Big Eater: Calls herself a food-lover and frequently thinks about food, and then there's the large amounts of Japari buns received and the Food as Bribe mention below. Justified as brainpower requires energy, which she and her assistant point out. As does flying.
- Does Not Like Spam: She and her assistant are tired of eating Japari buns, due to receiving large quantities from other Friends as payment for helping. Hence their request of having Kaban cook a meal for them.
- Food as Bribe: Demands that the girls cook them a meal before they'll identify what Kaban is.
- Hair Wings: Although not as noticeable as the other bird Friends.
- The Leader: Refers to herself as the leader of the park along with her assistant, and they are the ones who lead the charge against the Black Cellien.
- The Owl-Knowing One: She is called as Professor by the other Friends.
- Those Two Guys: With Eurasian Eagle-Owl.
Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo)

The professor's assistant who resides in the Japari Library. In the original game, her given name is Mimi.
- Big Eater: Similar to the professor.
- Hair Wings: Although not as noticeable as the other bird Friends.
- Hidden Buxom: Because of the size difference between hers and the professor's real life counterparts, fans speculated her to be this. In the end it was subtly canonized in a few lines from Kemono Friends 3.
- The Lancer: Serves as this for the professor.
- The Leader: Is apparently this along with the professor.
- The Owl-Knowing One: Like the professor, she is very knowledgeable about humans.
- Those Two Guys: With Northern White-Faced Owl.
Margay (Leopardus wiedii)

A bespectacled cat Friend who's a huge fan of PPP. She can even imitate their voices perfectly.
- Ascended Fangirl: Becomes PPP's manager by the end of the episode.
- Nerd Glasses: She wears glasses and is nerdy Otaku when it comes to everything about PPP.
- Nosebleed: Gets a mild one one when she's introduced to PPP.
- Voice Changeling: Capable of perfectly imitating other people's voices. This proves critical to making PPP's first live performance a success. She can even imitate a Cellien, which she uses to distract the Black Cellien.
- Yuri Fangirl: Is implied to ship various members of PPP, and is one of these outright in the manga. You can't spell Margay without "gay," after all.
Princess/Royal Penguin (Eudyptes schlegeli)

A member of the idol group PPP. She organizes them and acts as their unofficial leader behind the scenes. Her stage name is Princess.
- Canon Foreigner: She's the only PPP member who wasn't in the mobile game. This is actually referenced in the show, when Margay mentions that the original PPP only has four members.
- The Heart: She is the reason why the 3rd Generation of PPP was formed in the first place.
- Performance Anxiety: Despite her being the most gung-ho of the penguins, she's revealed to be deeply insecure of her own ability due to the previous incarnations of PPP not having a Royal Penguin member.
- This may be a reference to her Canon Foreigner status (see above).
- Tsundere: She plays this up as part of her act.
Iwabi (Rocker)/Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome)
A member of the idol group PPP. She acts as the energetic tomboy of the group. Her stage name is Rocker.
- Tomboy: Appearance wise, she looks like this.
Gen/Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua)
A member of the idol group PPP. She acts as The Heart of the group. Her stage name is Gen.
- Nice Girl: She's kind and gentle, both on and off the stage.
Hululu/Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti)
A member of the idol group PPP. She's something of an airhead. Her stage name is Hululu.
- The Ditz: It's both part of her idol appeal and a part of her general personality.
Emperor/Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri)
A member of the idol group PPP. On stage, she plays the role of the bold leader of the group. Her stage name is Emperor.
- Animal Gender-Bender: Implied to be a male in the past.
- Blank White Eyes: When she gets really nervous.
- The Leader: Acts as this on stage as part of her role, but she is worried about her ability to play it since Princess acts as their leader behind the scenes (and was the one who assigned her her role as "leader").
- Peek A Bangs: It covers her left eye.
Crunchyroll-hime
A red fox Friend who is seen in the crowd at the PPP concert.
- Creator Cameo: Yes, that is the mascot of Crunchyroll, added as a thank-you by the creators for the subbed release on the website of the anime. Her actress from Wooser's Hand-to-Mouth Life was brought in for the dub as well.
Ezo Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki)

A fox Friend who helps maintain the hot springs. She's rather lazy.
- Continuity Cameo: Ezo Red Fox is one of the "first generation" cast members.
- Gamer Chick: Spends a lot of time playing in the arcades.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Silver Fox's Blue.
- Shrinking Violet: Not on the same level as Kaban but when she is introduced, she was hiding behind Silver Fox.
- The Slacker: Primal Instinct-wise, she prefer loafing around.
- Those Two Girls: Always seen with Silver Fox.
Silver Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

A fox Friend who helps maintain the hot springs. She's the more hardworking of the two foxes.
- Palette Swap: Her and Red Fox are essentially this to each other, since the two are technically the same species with the silver fox simply being a color mutation.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Red Fox's Red. As she is more responsible to the lazy Red Fox.
- Those Two Girls: Always seen with Red Fox.
Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
A Friend that is seen in the hot springs. In the game, she was the owner of it.
- Cat Smile: Truth in Television — capybaras do have this sort of mouth when seen in the front
◊.
- Misplaced Wildlife: A capybara being in the snowy mountains as opposed to a tropical rainforest or grassland near bodies of water. She lampshades this explaining the cold temperature makes her feel uncomfortable and thus she would rather be in the hot springs.
- Verbal Tic: Ends most sentences with echo of the last syllable. Such as "matte ta yo yo yo..."
Campo Flicker (Colaptes campestris)
A bird Friend that works in the Lodge.
- Hair Wings: On par of being a bird Friend.
Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa reticulata)
An aspiring detective Friend who attempts to solve a mystery that is occurring in the Lodge, with mixed results.
- Amateur Sleuth: She's not very good at it though.
- Genial Giraffe: Given her aim in becoming a detective, she counts.
Gray Wolf (Canis lupus)

A Friend making a manga who gets ideas by telling scary stories to other Friends and drawing their reactions.
- Crying Wolf: Because of her constant telling of scary stories, when she actually saw the "ghost" Kaban and Serval didn't believe her at first.
- The Gadfly: Tells scary stories just to get reactions out of people.
- Mythology Gag: One of her scary stories mentions a Friend shaped Cellien. One actually did exist in the game.
Golden Snub-nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana)
A monkey friend who is a member of a group of Cellien Hunters.
- Monkey King Lite: Golden Snub-nosed Monkey is a reference to Sun Wukong the Monkey King from Journey to the West. Part of her Shout Out is that she's a warrior, carries a battle staff, and wears a golden headband.
Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)
A bear friend who is a member of a group of Cellien Hunters. Unlike most of the other Friends, she doesn't fear fire.
- Bears Are Bad News: At least for Celliens. She merely has a harsh personality at worst towards other Friends.
- Tsundere: Gruffly rebuffs Kaban and Serval's help, saying that they're weaklings who'd just get in the way. Monkey calls her on it, saying she did it out of worry.
African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)
A wild dog Friend who is a member of a group of Cellien Hunters.
- Heroic Dog: An African wild dog who hunts dangerous Celliens.

- Canon Foreigner: She is a recently-created Friend, and thus did not appear in the mobile game.
- Hair Wings
Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)
- Beware the Nice Ones: She is normally sweet, but turns into a fierce fighter when she's angered. A lot like real pandas.
- Pandaing to the Audience
- Sleepyhead: She tends to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. This is Truth in Television to a degree; giant pandas in zoos tend to be lethargic due to their diet of bamboo (which lack nutrients for a panda as they are carnivores).
Red Panda EX (Ailurus fulgens)
- I Just Want to Be Special: Even if she considers Giant Panda to be better than her, she wishes to be still helpful in some way.
- No Sense of Direction: Offers to help Kyururu find a playground in Azea Park, but constantly gets the group lost. She confesses she has no idea where it is.
- Overshadowed by Awesome: She considers herself boring compared to Giant Panda, whom she sees as cuter. It may be a reference to her species also being known as "lesser pandas".
Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
- Dude, Where's My Reward?: Being a performing animal, she'll ask for a reward after performing tricks or doing a task, or else she'll do nothing for them. That said, she'll refuse a reward if she finds something even more special, such as a new way to perform tricks.
- Friendly, Playful Dolphin: She loves to play and perform in front of others.
- Heroic Dolphin: She rescues Serval when she falls into the water.
- Telepathy: Comes off as this when she speaks underwater. It's also spot-on with how real-life cetaceans communicate with echolocation.

- Dude, Where's My Reward?: The same case as Bottlenose Dolphin above.
- Sweet Seal: A friendly and playful sea lion after the reward part is sorted out.
Aardwolf (Proteles cristata)
- Ambiguous Situation: Is she the same aardwolf in the last episode of Season 1? Apparently yes in the manga version.
Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus)
- Bat Out of Hell: Played with. She tends to give off a dark vibe and is rather creepy, like the reputation of her species, but she's actually well-meaning.
- Winged Humanoid: She has bat-wings, which sprout from near her waist rather than her back.
Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
- Cassandra Truth: She initially doesn't believe that Kyururu is a human.

- Panthera Awesome
- Sibling Team: She and Leopard are referred to as sisters.
- Those Two Guys: Is always seen with Leopard.
Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
- Actual Pacifist: She dislikes fighting, preferring to act scary instead. Truth in Television for gorillas, which are normally passive herbivores that use mock battles when facing a threat. However, she'll actually fight as a last resort just like real gorillas.
- Foil: To Lion. Both are leaders who act sternly in front of their followers, but actually would rather relax and not fight. However, while Lion is a Blood Knight when the situation calls for it, Gorilla is an Actual Pacifist who would rather intimidate adversaries and will only fight when left with no other choice.
- Gentle Gorilla: True to gorillas, she dislikes violence and uses intimidating displays when in confrontation.
- Killer Gorilla: She gives off this image to keep her underlings in line. But as noted in Actual Pacifist, she's actually a subversion.
- Primal Chest-Pound: She makes her debut doing this to get her followers' attention. She does this with open hands like real gorillas instead of clenched fists expected from fictional gorillas, and this produces the accurate "popping" sound rather than the usual "drumming".
- Tank-Top Tomboy: She wears a tank top and is a tough girl who intimidates her opponents to submission.
Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus)
- The Rival: She is rivals with Pronghorn.

Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica)

- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Whether they are supernatural prophets of the Japari world or only fragments of Kyururu’s mind was not explained.
- Those Two Guys: Is always seen with Greater Lophorina.
Greater Lophorina (Lophorina superba)
- Hair Wings
- Those Two Guys: Is always seen with Western Parotia.

- Visual Pun: Fitting with her species name, she acts like an air stweardess.
- Walking the Earth: She constantly travels around Japari Park.
Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis)
A fox Friend running an abandoned seaside hotel, which is now half-covered by water.
- Cunning Like a Fox: She has very good hearing thanks to her large ears. She can even pick up Habu's snarks.
- I Regret Nothing: Played for Laughs. When she and her staff are surrounded by Celliens, she claims to have no regrets... except for not having a lot of guests come to the hotel and the PPP put on a dinner show. Habu tells her that's too big of a regret.
Okinawan Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis)
A snake Friend who runs the souvenir shop of the hotel.
- Achilles' Heel: She doesn't like sticks, since her species is often caught by using them.
- Deadpan Snarker: She is very sharp-tongued, fitting for a venomous snake.
- The Slacker: She would rather lie about, feeling it's pointless to keep an abandoned hotel running.
- Snakes Are Sinister: She's not antagonistic, though she is a bit of a jerk.
Domestic Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus)
A Friend who is in charge of the hotel's maintenance.
- Messy Pig: Inverted. She loves to tidy around the hotel, a reference to the fact that pigs are actually among the cleanest of animals contrary to their reputation as this trope.

- Genki Girl: Is energetic and cheerful.
Lucky Beasts

Japari Park robotic units that serve as guides and service providers.
- Alien Non-Interference Clause: They never talk to any Friends, since they are programmed to not interfere with Japari Park's ecosystem. This directive is temporarily rescinded when humans are in danger. The Lucky Beasts on the second season don't seem to follow this directive, for unknown reasons.
- Do-Anything Robot: Limited to within the parameters their design, but the Lucky Beasts seem to be able perform all sorts of tasks such as weeding, cleaning, maintenance, farming crops, and even attaching snow treads to a bus despite not showing any sort of appendage or tools that would let them do so.
- Heroic Sacrifice: The Lucky Beast accompanying Kaban sacrifices itself to make the Black Cellien sink into the ocean. Lucky survives, though reduced to a single part.
- Logic Bomb: Even though they have the entire park's map stored in their brain, they completely freeze when something is different from how they remember it (i.e. when a bridge that's supposed to be there turns out to have collapsed a long time ago). Considering the abandoned and disused state of Japari Park, this happens quite often.
- Mr. Exposition: Boss, aka Lucky Beast, provides background and information when entering new habitats. However, inside of attractions, he lets Kaban work things out for herself.
- Robot Buddy: Intended as guides to people. The Lucky Beasts from Season 2 more so, as they have programmed quirks and different bodies depending on the area they are programmed to guide.
Celliens
The main antagonists of the story.
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Some Celliens are quite large. Especially the Black Cellien, which grows by absorbing Sandstar Rho in the air.
- Blob Monster: Amorphous except for their crystal core.
- In fact, most of the Celliens of the game and additional media are based on real-life algae.
- Dub Name Change: The Crunchyroll subtitles label them as "Ceruleans".
- Mook: Attacks anything other than themselves.
- Non-Indicative Name: Named for a shade of blue, but some varieties are colors other than blue.
- Silent Antagonist: Does not appear to communicate in any way.
Beast
A new antagonist introduced in Season 2. A feral, more vicious version of a Friend due to a failed result of an animal being exposed to Sandstar.
- Evil Counterpart: To the Friends. While Friends are more or less humans with animal-like traits, Beasts are completely animalistic and much more vicious.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Beast is actually Amur (Siberian) Tiger, but nobody remembered her name.
Mirai
Navigator of the now-defunct, mobile game version of Kemono Friends. In the anime, she is a former park guide who was forced to evacuate due to the Cellien threat.
- Continuity Cameo: From the Game.
- Meaningful Name: Her name means "Future".
- Walking Spoiler: Only those who actually play the game will know her role in the story.
Serval
- Genki Girl
- Identical Stranger: She looks exactly the same as the other Serval. Serval herself theorizes that this is likely a rare case of two instances of the same Friend existing. It's implied that she subconsciously knows who the other Serval is as she suddenly starts crying after seeing her.
- Previous Player-Character Cameo: She's the Serval from the mobile game, complete with the original VA. She also mentions Caracal, another major character from the game.
Black Cellien

An absolutely giant Cellien that resides near the harbor and is almost completely invulnerable to attacks.
- Asteroids Monster: It can split off smaller, weaker versions of itself from its main body.
- Big Bad: Its mere existence is the reason Japari Park is abandoned and in ruins, as the human staff couldn't deal with it and were forced to evacuate and leave everything behind. It's also the biggest threat the Friends face and, judging by how much destroyed the park is, it has been around for a long time.
- Cyclops: Sports a single eye just like regular Celliens.
- Eldritch Abomination: Unlike regular Celliens, something about the Black Cellien seems... off. It can regenerate itself, it's quadrupedal instead of being a blob, and it's made of a very different type of Sandstar that was being contained by four "Gods" at the top of a volcano.
- Final Boss: The last and most powerful enemy Kaban, Serval and the other Friends face.
- Healing Factor: Thanks to this, it was virtually invulnerable until the filter was closed over the Sandstar Volcano, cutting off the Sandstar Raw (Low? Rho?) it needs to regenerate.
- Hero Killer: Subverted. The Black Cellien manages to eat both Serval and Kaban, but the former is rescued before any major damage to her body, memories or personality is done, and the later is "digested", but since she's a Human Friend with her base species being, well, human, she doesn't loses her form or mind, remaining the same until the end.
- King Mook: It's basically just a really huge Cellien.
- Kill It with Water: When the Black Cellien comes in contact with water, it hardens into volcanic rock. This is how they defeat it at the end: by luring it towards a boat and sinking it onto the ocean.
