The fact that Leo had to use strategy to affect the ordering of fights implies it's not a stomp; in a world where Donatello convinces Raphael to team up against Leonardo, Leonardo just loses. This isn't the Megaman Battle Royale, where Megaman.exe could likely solo all four contestants even if they team up on him.

I don't know about the Vegeta vs. Shadow one, in Jak and Daxter vs. Ratchet and Clank, they mention Jak's only shot was his Dark Ego form, which can only last so long. Shadow's best chance was his Super Shadow form, which also only has a time limit, without it, he had no chance of winning.

However, they did insinuate that Vegeta would have trouble against Super Shadow, only mentioning that he would be durable to survive Super Shadow long enough for it's time limit to run out, after which, it's a done deal. If that's enough to consider it a fair fight than a stomp, then who am I to argue it further.

[up][up]That's not going to happen. In a world where Leonardo has a heart attack right as the match starts, he also just loses. In a world where Mega Man.EXE blows a circuit as the fight starts, he just loses. Yes, the fight can technically go another way if you stretch the Turtles' personalities, but Leonardo's far superior combat prowess means he wins in any reasonable scenario. Even if Ralph and Don team up, which is extremely unlikely due to Ralph's hot-headedness and Don's affinity for technology over persuasiveness, Leo still likely has enough experience over them to kill them both.

Not seeing anything in the tmnt analysis that indicates the hosts think Leo could easily defeat the rest of the turtle. Just that he was the clear winner.

I think that perhaps we could mention that Michelangelo in particular got stomped hard both in terms of analysis and animation, as he's described as the weakest, least intelligent turtle and as having the worst weapon, which is shown in the animation, where he gets taken out extremely quickly while only getting a few weak hits in, not really doing any damage.

Proposed writeup:

  • While most of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were close enough in terms of strength, with Leonardo's strategy being what gave him the edge over his brothers, Michelangelo was the exception to this. The analysis didn't try to hide that Mikey stood no chance: he's the least intelligent of the turtles, and his weapon is by far the weakest and hardest to use. Because of that, he was found to be the weakest turtle, and got sliced to pieces by Leonardo in the first 10 seconds of the fight.

I analyzed YMMV.Death Battle and judged the following entries to be misuse.

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • One of the complaints of said battle is that Superman was too passive, which caused the Earth to explode. The rematch shows what happens when Supes goes all-out and doesn't restrain his power, and he takes down Goku with little effort. I've never seen anyone give this complaint about Goku VS Superman. If anything, Superman holding back until he must get serious is what people expected.
    • 1 Minute Melee's Bowser vs. Eggman is this to the Mario fanbase to some extent, being the first time a Mario character beats a Sonic character, even if Mario characters, such as Yoshi, have won on the show before. Not only is this for a different show, saying any matchup got decided for one character to cause a Broken Win/Loss Streak isn't how Wiz and Boomstick work.
    • Many were angry at some episodes having the opposite results of the research team. Thankfully, both the hosts and the research team agreed that Ratchet and Clank would come out on top against Jak and Daxter. What does it even mean for a fight to have "the opposite results of the research team?" Research has always decided the fight.
    • Vegeta vs Shadow has been widely criticized for being a massive Curb-Stomp Battle in Vegeta's favor. Shadow would later be pitted against Mewtwo, a character more or less around his power level, or so people thought, as Mewtwo ended up winning by about the same margin. There's no evidence stating Shadow fought Mewtwo because the hosts wanted to show how someone weaker than Vegeta could stomp Shadow. Wiz and Boomstick don't decide matches based on that.
    • Ryu returns to fight Jin in Season 5, who people found more similar and close in power to him than his first opponent, Scorpion. Wiz and Boomstick don't decide matchups based on close power levels, they decide them based on narrative connections.
    • Season 6's Weiss vs. Mitsuru episode led to people fearing the former would win simply because Death Battle was under the Rooster Teeth brand, and that they didn't want to kill off a character from one of their company's webseries. Fortunately, Mitsuru's victory proved that they aren't as biased as many would believe. This doesn't sound so much like a saving throw as it is merely a subversion. I've replaced it with two entries about how Ben acknowledged how they screwed up Yang VS Tifa in a Q&A and how another Q&A retroactively explained Ben 10 VS Green Lantern.
    • "Weiss vs. Mitsuru" was controversial due to Weiss' death not being gory at all, especially by the show's standards, leading to accusations of bias towards RWBY characters. In the DBX episode "Blake vs. Inuyasha", Blake was killed in a much more gruesome fashion after losing the fan vote, as if to challenge these accusations. Whether or not a character's death is gory doesn't depend on such considerations.
    • The DBX episode "Saitama vs. Kenshiro" was widely panned on release due its ugly animation and Genos being the one who fought Kenshiro through most of it. It ending in a draw was also divisive. The later DBX episode "Superman vs. Saitama" is seen as an in improvement in every regard. The animation is far more polished and much crisper, Saitama does all the fighting, and there is a decisive victor this time. Merely because Growing the Beard takes place doesn't mean it's a response to negative critical reception.
  • Base-Breaking Character: In general, any character who wins a Death Battle will either get loved or hated by the fandom. Superman, Agumon and Tai, and Yang Xiao Long are three important examples of this. This header is both bad indentation and a Zero-Context Example.
  • Broken Base:
    • Goku vs. Superman is known to be the most debated Hypothetical Fight Debate of all time, so obviously Death Battle claiming to have put the question to rest was bound to cause massive controversy: Talking about the debate in full here would be a grave mistake that invites violations of the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment. I've removed the sub-bullets and added a note not to talk about it, though the acknowledgment remains.
      • On Dragon Ball's side, fans were angry over the treatment of Goku, saying that his power and feats weren't accurately represented and that Death Battle sold him short. The fact that the second round came out during the very beginning of Dragon Ball Super gave birth to the argument that Goku was going to become even more powerful anyway, necessitating another round. Further angering fans was Death Battle's hammering in on the fact that no matter how many new forms Goku got or how many limits he broke, he would never win against Superman, which these fans felt to be markedly untrue. These fans pointed out that several characters in the DC canon have proven to be stronger than Supes (Doomsday, Shazam!, Darkseid, etc.) and that the Ultimate Guide to Superman stated that Superman had, has and will have limits and many of Superman's supposed feats were either being taken out of context or were fake.
      • On Superman's side, fans pointed out that Death Battle's interpretation of Superman is that he has no limits and that someone who is limitless can easily take out somebody with limits, no matter how strong they are. To prove this point, they have pointed out the feats Superman has pulled that prove he is limitless (lifting a book with infinite pages, sneezing away a solar system, etc.) Comic fans have added that all interpretations of those feats made by anime fans solely to debunk Death Battle don't understand the text and that only reasonable reading of those feats would necessitate them as working exactly like Death Battle gave for them to make any sense in what the authors were trying to say.
    • Ben 10 vs. Green Lantern managed to rival Goku vs. Superman in terms of how controversial it was. The problems the Ben 10 fanbase brings up are that Ben didn't show enough versatility and aliens that may have made a difference are left out. Of the six aliens in the fight, three contribute nothing to the overall fight, and five are from the Original Series. However, another side of the argument counters that the only alien that would have made a difference was Alien X, and as such, it did not matter what aliens were used in the fight (especially considering the "fight does not determine the outcome". However, the biggest point of contention is Alien X's power, which isn't helped by the form's lack of demonstrated limits in the show. One side claims "Alien X can do anything" as stated by multiple characters in the show and the form should've been treated as such. However, this is rebuked by the fact that the creators of the show seemingly not having any consistent idea as to what a Celestialsapien's level of power is, ranging from multiverse level to universe to unable to survive the destruction of a timeline without help. The characters in question don't have enough experience with Celestialsapiens to determine whether the "can do anything" statements are to be taken literally or as hyperbole as well as the fact that Hal has fought beings that have demonstrated greater feats than Alien X has (i.e. Mandrakk and the Anti-Monitor) to which the Ben 10 side of the argument argues that Hal needed help in his fights against higher beings. The argument ultimately boils down to how lenient you want to be with the characters' statements and feats. Alien X's one-universe creation feat and multiple "can do anything" statements vs. Hal's scaling to other Green Lanterns and greater dimensional threats like Mandrakk. This rundown of the debate is far too Flame Bait-prone, and I've replaced it with two sentences summarizing the core issues and a third reminding people of the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment.
    • "Flash VS Sonic" was highly debated ever since it was announced, and the discussion has not gotten any less intense since then. Because Archie Sonic and Wally West both have very loosely defined limits, fans of both characters contest Death Battle's claim that The Flash would win in a very close fight. However, while a large portion of the fanbase believes that the fight should have been described as a Curb-Stomp Battle, there is much disagreement about who should have won. Fans of Sonic claim that he was lowballed, as he's a high-level Reality Warper who should be able to delete his opponent from existence on a whim, while The Flash's supporters point out that Death Battle itself states that he can No-Sell anything Sonic can throw at him, making his victory a Foregone Conclusion. That's on top of those who do agree with the episode's analysis, and those who are mainly upset at the episode continuing DC Comics' win streak against non-Marvel franchises. While Flash VS Sonic has seen more controversy than average, it's not nearly as Flame Bait as Goku vs Supes and Ben vs Hal, and I wouldn't call the debate intense enough to list it here. Most people I've seen agree that this match is an extremely close win for Wally.
  • Canon Defilement:
    • Superman's portrayal in the series hasn't gone over well with many in the comic book community. Mostly because Death Battle claimed that Superman has no limits, which goes against DC's view on the character. In the official databook, it is noted that while Superman is extremely powerful, he does have limits. There are people out there who are stronger, faster, and smarter than him. So the reasoning that Superman is basically unstoppable is flawed on its face. Fans are also not pleased that Death Battle's Superman is a composite of New 52's Superman and Post-Crisis Superman, who are two completely different characters with different feats. This seems like an extremely controversial claim. Versus debaters nearly always interpret a character differently from their common portrayal, and this is no different. Composites are also DB's whole thing.
  • Catharsis Factor: These two both violate Examples Are Not General.
    • In general, seeing characters one dislikes meet their demise at the hands of their opponent.
    • Having a character/character from a series you like end up winning, especially after a years-long losing streak (most notably Ryu's victory over Jin for Street Fighter fans), can be very satisfying.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • This happens with every Death Battle. Some fans take their favorite character losing and being killed very poorly indeed. Dragon Ball Z fans after Goku vs. Superman are one of the most unabashed examples of this in the whole series, even though there is legitimate criticisms to the outcome and their logic given. Examples Are Not General.
    • After years of being Friendly Fandoms with each other, Yang VS Tifa has caused a rift among ScrewAttack fans who declare the match foul and rigged in favor of a Rooster Teeth character. People have now joked that Ben and Chad will from now on allow RoosterTeeth characters to win automatically against whatever opponent they face against, which in turn caused a lot of people to hate RoosterTeeth and believe their crew are rigging some of the matches. This issue is practically nonexistent nowadays.
    • The rivalry between the Overwatch and Team Fortress 2 fandoms was noticeably heated already, but the outcome of Tracer VS Scout has managed to make the existing friction between them even worse. Irrelevant, not about DB.
    • One Piece and Fairy Tail fans have never been on ideal terms with each other initially, but after the Zoro VS Erza battle was released, things got even more heated. It stands to only get even moreso with the Ace VS Natsu battle. Irrelevant, not about DB.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Overlapping with Genius Bonus: Fridge Brilliance is already on the Fridge page.
    • In the wild, there have been several documented cases of spiders eating bats. This makes the result of Batman vs. Spider-Man poignant.
    • In a similar fashion, it's common knowledge that hares are preyed upon by foxes, which lends some idea as to the outcome of Fox McCloud vs. Bucky O'Hare.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • All the talk about Goku being able to trump Superman was finally given a canonical reason why he shouldn't in Dragon Ball Super when his reckless usage of the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan combined with the Kaioken x10 in his battle with Hit causes him to suffer from Delayed Onset Ki Syndrome, which damages his way of using Ki and too much reckless usage can make that permanent. I don't see how this is a canonical reason Goku shouldn't beat Superman. Heroic RRoD ≠ evidence you should lose a fight.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Shadow may be a cocky dick, but the poor guy cannot seem to win a single Death Battle, having suffered two humiliating defeats at the hands of both Vegeta and Mewtwo. Losing fights doesn't make you a woobie, not to mention how he's won one since.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Now taken literally with the battle featuring the Big G himself. This is misuse, as the Trope Namer has nothing to do with it.
    • In a more Meta way, the vast majority of traffic to ScrewAttack's YouTube page is for Death Battle. All non-Death Battle videos (the majority of ScrewAttack content) get bombarded with people posting suggestions for Battles, asking where the next episode is, demanding the next episode, threatening to unsubscribe if it's not posted, etc. ScrewAttack is currently defunct.
    • This was taken to its logical extreme when it was revealed that the next battle after Yang VS Tifa would be announced during the season finale of The Industry. Many commenters took to spoiling the announcement under the video and proclaiming that it was unnecessary to watch from there. Though, that being said, the Take That, Audience! mentioned above likely played a factor in how the fans reacted. This entry feels like irrelevant misuse.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • While he still most likely dies in the end and the fight itself received incredible flack due to its lackluster appearance, Kenshiro managing to kill Saitama in his DBX fight with him undoubtedly earns him a spot as this — especially considering neither Superman nor Goku even came close to doing so in their respective fights with him. From what I've seen, this entry blatantly misrepresents Kenshiro's role in the fandom, which is quite minor. Nobody is throwing around badass memes about him, and his draw against Saitama was widely panned.
    • Even as controversial as the franchise is to Death Battle fans, out of the top 5 most used franchise in Death Battle, DC Universe have the best win-loss ratio out of all of them with an impressive 68% of winning, Nintendo being close behind with a 66%note . These are just numbers and don't point towards DC being that memetic.
  • Memetic Loser:
    • Following Season 7's "Flash VS Sonic", jokes at the expense of Sonic the Hedgehog started becoming more and more common, as watchers started realizing that the last time a Sonic character had won a battle was in "Amy Rose VS Ramona Flowers", back in Season 3. Making this worse, one of Sonic's losses was in his rematch with Mario, which means that one of his prior victories was retroactively undone. The ending of the "Flash VS Sonic" fight also plays a role in this, as it ends with Sonic being hit so hard that he becomes Ret-Gone, leading to Death Battle fans jokingly treating him as an Un-person. This is even though "Flash VS Sonic" was described as an extremely close match between two of the most powerful combatants to ever appear on the show, with Sonic simply having the bad luck of being matched up with one of the very few characters that stand a chance against him. Archie Sonic, the version who lost to Wally, was a different version entirely and doesn't have anyone calling him a loser. Sonic characters are 4-6 in victories and losses, which doesn't make them losers at all.
  • My Real Daddy: The research team is often seen as the ones who decide the truly correct results of fights, and people often take umbrage when the fight's results aren't the same as the research team's. The people who work on the team have had to clarify that they're not perfect either, and just as prone to error as the hosts. By definition, any battle's outcome depends on the researchers and hosts agreeing. Saying the hosts made one character win despite the researchers deciding for the other is objectively false in any case.
  • Older Than They Think: The trope's description requires examples to be about a "trope, plot, or line" being older than most believe, which none of these fall under.
    • Many have complained that Inferno's sprite in Guts VS Nightmare looks nothing like Inferno does in the Soul series (A given, since it belongs to Cinder). While this might be true for newer models, the sprite used for Inferno is actually quite similar to his appearance in Soulcalibur.
    • A somewhat forgivable example in Joker vs Sweet Tooth. Many have complained that Needles has never shown any pickiness in how he kills his victims and wouldn't have stepped out of Sweet Tooth. While Needles doesn't usually do so, Twisted Metal (2012) has shown him killing everyone in a hospital with his machete because he found it more satisfying and wanting to watch Sophie die by his own machete because of his strong hatred for her. Since the Joker had pretty much been a thorn in Needle's side through the fight, it makes sense that he could've been goaded into giving the Clown Prince of Crime the same treatment.
    • Some people thought Venom in Venom vs Bane acted a little too Ax-Crazy and Laughing Mad during the fight animation, comparing him more to Carnage than the actual Venom. What some of them might not have realized was that early in his run before his popularity skyrocketed Venom was just as insane, if not more so, than Carnage, and his shift to the Lethal Protector most know him as today was directly influenced by his growing popularity (as was Carnage's creation).
    • Many found that the new format of episodes per season to be too short compared to the first two. True, but Ben later revealed this was always meant to be how it went, they just didn't expect the series to blow up so much.
  • Rooting for the Empire:
    • In-Universe; in the Meta vs Carolina episode, Grif was rooting for the Meta to win for the whole episode. In-Universe examples don't go on YMMV pages.
  • Ron the Death Eater:
    • A meta example. Yang's portrayal was not well received for her trigger happiness, love of fighting, and relaxed disposition being cranked up several notches to the point of sociopathy. While many will point out she'd never act like this in canon, some actually consider it an accurate representation for how she is on RWBY. Despite Barb saying this isn't something she would do in canon. This attitude change happens to literally every fighter and has nothing to do with RTDE.
  • Seasonal Rot: Season 3 is so far considered the weakest season the show has, even by hardcore fans. While the fight animations are still well done, and the show has been subject to controversy ever since it began, Season 3 to many started off weak, with Dante vs Bayonetta and Bowser vs Ganon having controversial outcomes, and many of the season's battles (especially Flash VS Quicksilver being criticized for being massive Curbstomp Battlesnote  (ironically, Season 5 would eventually have an even higher number of curbstomps, but generally avoided most of the panning that Season 3 received due to most of the matchups being heavily requested). Several episodes were also controversial even by Death Battle standardsnote  Some theorize that ScrewAttack's joint venture with Rooster Teeth played a heavy hand in the season's decline in quality (with Carolina VS the Meta being pointed as an example, especially with what Ben had to say in response to the fandom's general disinterest for the episode's release), but that's an entire other can of worms. However, the later episodes (Ken vs Terry, Amy vs Ramona, Hulk vs Doomsday and Zoro vs Erza) as well as the relatively early Ratchet and Clank VS Jak and Daxter were much more well-received by the fans, especially in the forums and the wikis. Other people, however, think that the jump in the season's quality came too late to absolve the season's rocky start. This Wall of Text reeks of Complaining About Shows You Don't Like.
  • Seinfeld Is Unfunny: Back then, Link vs Cloud blew everyone away with Death Battle using 3D Animation. Nowadays, well... let's just say it's used to show how much Death Battle has improved with 3D animation since then. Seinfeld Is Unfunny doesn't apply to graphics.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: These two are both ZCEs.
    • Season 2 is considered this compared to Season 1, having much better graphics and effects for the fights.
    • After Mewtwo VS Shadow and Tracer VS Scout got a lot of hate because of their disappointing action, Cammy VS Sonya Blade and Ken VS Terry are considered much better by comparison.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: These entries are either Forgot About His Powers, voice actors not doing a good job, music being disappointing, or other misuse unrelated to the plot.
    • In Eggman VS Wily.
      • Mecha Knuckles gets even less done than Scratch and Grounder, getting barely two seconds of screen time before he's destroyed by Guts Man.
      • Mecha Sonic never gets to use his Golden Super Mode.
      • Bass' Super Mode is only used in a futile attempt to stop Metal Sonic from going One-Winged Angel, when he was the only Robot Master strong enough to take him on.
    • In Shadow VS Vegeta.
      • Super Shadow spent most of his time teleporting Super Saiyan Vegeta around via Chaos Control, which ultimately led to his undoing.
      • Shadow never gets to use Chaos Blast, only a failed attempt at using it just before his energy runs out.
    • Paralysis is brought up when listing Pikachu's moves and abilities, but it never makes an appearance in the actual fight. In an odd inversion of Were Still Relevant Dammit, electrical types (Like what Bianca would qualify as) have been immune to paralysis since Pokémon generation Six, which debuted after the episode.
    • Luigi's Negative Zone had loads of potential, but its "unreliability" (of the eight possible effects, between zero and three effects are distributed at random) lead to none of the seriously debilitating effects making an appearance and affecting Tails; the random effects appeared to be "uncontrollable tripping" and "timeslow from the Stopwatch item", the former of which is negated entirely by jumping/flying, Tails' forte.
    • When fighting Kirby, Buu directly turns into Kid Buu while skipping Super Buu form, who is without a doubt the smartest of the Buus. Conversely, Kirby's ability to create Helpers and many of his Copy Abilities like Rock, Ultra Sword, and Crash aren't used at all. Granted, researching and animating all of Buu's fighting forms and Kirby's abilities would've taken too much time as the episode was already delayed.
    • During the rundown of Tommy Oliver's and the Tigerzord, it was determined that Tommy could call on the Zords of the other rangers (as they had done so before on the show) which he uses to form the MegaTigerzord. However, since he could call any of the other rangers' Zords, there was nothing stopping him from calling the Red Dragon Zord or the Tor Carrier Zord to form the ThunderUltrazord. Granted ... while Tor alone could tank a melee attack from Serpentara, the ThunderUltrazord was notoriously slow, and it's final attack (flying up and landing on the enemy) would have been near impossible to land on the very quick Epyon, so it likely would have made little to no difference anyway.
    • Hawkeye VS Green Arrow: While we get to see Hawkeye's 25 megaton arrow and the massive destruction that it brings, we don't get to see Green Arrow's warhead arrow.
    • Charizard VS Greymon: SkullGreymon and MetalGreymon are mentioned in the character summations, but don't make an appearance in the battle itself, although Agumon didn't need those forms to win the battle.
    • In Dante vs Bayonetta, both Trish and Jeanne step in to assist their partners. At one point Dante and Trish attack together, however Bayonetta and Jeanne don't get the same opportunity, even though combined they have been able to summon a Physical God to fight on their behalf. Whether or not Queen Sheba may have any sort of impact on the battle is unknown, but it does seem odd with the two together there was not even an attempt at a combined summoning. Although considering that Trish and Jeanne's inclusions would count as outside help, it most likely that Queen Sheba's use wouldn't be allowed anyway.
    • Bowser wasn't given a whole lot; Giga Bowser, Meowser, the magic staves/wands, the Double Cherry, and the Safety Ring in particular were not considered. The community consensus agrees that those last three would be a viable counter for Ganon's killing magic and could possibly circumvent his holy weapons no-limits fallacy.
    • On the other hand, Ganondorf's weapons and extensive magical abilities are mentioned but all-but completely ignored sans his trident (and only in Ganon form) and light balls, which sort of rounds out with Bowser's single hammer and tennis racket. He largely fights using hand-to-hand while only using his magical blasts occassionally, which can leave a sour taste in those who dislike his portrayal in Super Smash Bros. who almost exclusively fights bare-handed.
    • Neither Clank nor Daxter were given their Super Mode (Giant/Alpha Clank and Dark Daxter) and Ratchet wasn't given any of his higher-tier armor or gadget boots.
    • Similar to Shadow VS Vegeta, Shadow and Mewtwo hardly demonstrated much of their abilities during their Death Battle, mostly due to Mewtwo not screwing around and getting right to the point by mind-wiping Shadow. Unlike the first time though, Shadow does get to use Chaos Blast.
    • One of the many complaints of Tracer vs Scout is that Scout was not given his full arsenal, or at the very least, not given more of his iconic weapons like the Mad Milk, the Sandman, and the Flying Guillotine. And while the Force-A-Nature and the Soda Popper where mentioned in the analysis, they were never actually used in the fight. On top of that, Scout's double jump ability and running speed were never put to good use. In addition, some people also complained that Scout should've gained access to his Mann vs Machine upgrades like the canteens and the magic spells from Halloween mode.
    • The fight music for Jotaro VS Kenshiro was called 'Bizarre Stars'. While the music was overall well received, a majority of fans were disappointed that the song was not called 'Fist of the Joestar'.
    • A minor complaint, but some fans are disappointed that Leon Kennedy VS Frank West wasn't saved for October for an appropriate Halloween-themed Death Battle, since both combatants have experience in fighting the undead. There's even a segment mid-way through the fight where both combatants fight hordes of zombies in-between, making the episode an ironic twist of wasted opportunity for such an occasion. From the same fight, we sadly don't get to see more of Frank's ability to dress up as other Capcom characters and imitate their weapons and powers beyond a single Mega Buster shot, which is especially unfortunate as one of them is based on one of Leon's fellow Resident Evil characters, Jill Valentine.
    • Jin Kazama has his voice lines from his Street Fighter X Tekken voice actor Brad Swaile. Brad did do a decent job, but due to the main Tekken games having characters speak their native languages, most would have preferred that Screwattack re-used voice lines from his Japanese Seiyuu, Isshin Chiba.
    • Ben 10 appearing as a character meant this was inevitable, but some felt a few select aliens would have been interesting for Hal to engage. In particular were Feedback and Chromostone due to their Energy Absorption powers and Upgrade possibly hacking into the Power Ring. Other popular choices were fan favorites that could have made the fight more entertaining, namely Rath. In fact, all the aliens used were from the Original Series (XLR8, Four Arms, Heatblast, Grey Matter and Way Big) with the exception of Alien X.
  • Tough Act to Follow:
    • Season 3 in general is considered the worst season overall for the amount of controversy behind them, and coming right after Season 2 (which many consider had the most consistent results and fight scenes), and even before that, Season 1 (to the more nostalgic fans). Examples Are Not General, and this entry seems like Complaining About Shows You Don't Like.
  • Values Dissonance: Possibly part of the massive backlash from Goku VS Superman. Superman is portrayed as rather arrogant and somewhat disrespectful of Goku as well as being cocky and angered by Goku's challenge. These are all traits shared by DBZ villains, thus subconsciously side with Goku. What isn't considered here is the fact that Superman is usually a pretty chill and reasonable person outside of the Death Battle and his attitude here is probably because he doesn't like to fight and Goku is forcing him to. This entry is about Superman being Unintentionally Unsympathetic and has nothing to do with values, so I've moved it there.
  • Win Back the Crowd: The first two of these are ZCEs, and the third is treading into controversial territory due to how close a matchup is being heavily up for debate.
    • For many, Ratchet and Clank VS Jak and Daxter saved Season 3 after the previous two battles went down in infamy for multiple reasons.
    • Ken VS Terry is shaping up to be the most well-received 2D fight of Season 3 thus far, and is considered by quite a few to be a return to form for the series as a whole. Most definitely helping this; it came right after Tracer VS Scout, one of the most poorly-received episodes of the season, if not the whole show.
    • It seems Season 4 as a whole is doing this, what with the fights being much closer and the winners being much less controversial than the previous season. (Not to mention featuring Power Rangers vs Voltron, one of the most requested fights in the show's history). Although, it is still receiving some flak for its more "lopsided" match-ups (Scrooge McDuck vs Shovel Knight, Venom vs Bane, and Android 18 vs Captain Marvel comes to mind).

Here's my Season 2 analysis. I'll start writing it up if I hear no objections.

  1. He-Man VS Lion-O: Yes. Despite the Eye of Thundera being powerful enough to obliterate Adam "if given the chance," that chance would never come due to it lacking a way to bypass the Power Sword. With Lion-O's only possible win-con negated, He-Man was 10 quadrillion times stronger, easily a large enough gap to make it a stomp.
  2. Shao Kahn VS M. Bison: Yes. Despite Bison being able to protect his soul, he fell short in stats far too much for it to matter, and Shao Kahn's anti-possession and experience with brainwashing didn't help matters. Shao Kahn is stated to have the power of "60 billion souls" and far more experience from his 10,000-year history, more than enough of a power gap to qualify this fight.
  3. Ryu Hayabusa VS Strider Hiryu: No. The analysis gives Hiryu the advantage in strength, speed, and weaponry, but it's not enough to call this match a stomp. It's merely an explanation, and the hosts explicitly said it was a close fight.
  4. Ivy VS Orchid: No. Jokes about cup sizes aside, Wiz and Boomstick claim this fight came down to Orchid's close combat outclassing Ivy's long-ranged attacks, which isn't enough to make it a stomp.
  5. Fox McCloud VS Bucky O'Hare: No. The two combatants' arsenals nullified each other, with Fox winning due to more experience, not remotely enough to be a stomp.
  6. Terminator VS RoboCop: Yes. The Terminator only held the speed advantage, with RoboCop eclipsing him in strength, durability, arsenal, and creativity. The gap is more than enough to qualify this fight as a stomp.
  7. Luigi VS Tails: Yes. Tails beat out Luigi everywhere except for experience, which means nothing when Tails is far faster, stronger, more intelligent, and more equipped.
  8. Pokémon Battle Royale: No. Venusaur winning 17%, Charizard winning 35%, and Blastoise winning 48% isn't enough to make for a stomp, given how a combatant should win at least a supermajority of times to count.
  9. Fulgore VS Sektor: No. Fulgore wins because his more diverse arsenal, well-built physique, and reactor power overcame Sektor's maneuverability, which only explains the result without implying it was a stomp.
  10. Godzilla VS Gamera: Yes. Godzilla is shown to heavily outclass Gamera in every way, barring the latter's slight speed advantage. He's nine times heavier, far more durable due to surviving Gamera's best durability feat with far less effort, and much stronger from scaling to Thor. Gamera couldn't consume Godzilla's non-fire radiation breath or retreat from the fight, making it colossally one-sided.
  11. Batman VS Captain America: No. Batman won because his gadgetry and martial arts mastery overcame Captain America's superior physique, which merely explains the outcome without implying it was a stomp.
  12. Tigerzord VS Gundam Epyon: No. While the analysis was convoluted, I'll lean on the side of it not counting. When the analysis doesn't provide a clear answer, we should err on the side of caution. Nothing else to say.
  13. Ryu VS Scorpion: No. On much the same grounds as above, all the analysis did was bring up how a few items in the fighters' arsenals would react to each other without implying a stomp.
  14. Deadpool VS Deathstroke: No. While Deadpool's unpredictability and healing secured him the win, Deathstroke was far too well-equipped and skilled to make it easy for the comparatively unskilled Wilson. Merely because Deathstroke didn't have a chance at winning doesn't mean he didn't put up a good fight, which he certainly did.
  15. Kirby VS Majin Buu: Yes (Double Subverted). Kirby utterly eclipses Buu in potency, possessing far more physical strength, relativistic speed, and planet-level durability. Simply put, Kirby's stats and destructive copying would always stomp Buu.
  16. Ragna VS Sol Badguy: Yes. Not only does Sol's experience surpass Ragna's training, but his attack potency reaches into the gigatons, far outclassing Ragna's potential. The stat gap here is way too large to say Ragna had any chance.
  17. Gaara VS Toph: No. The analysis merely lists Toph's counters for Gaara's techniques without implying any massive gap between them, so I wouldn't call this match a stomp. Merely countering your opponent's moves doesn't mean you'd effortlessly destroy them.
  18. Boba Fett VS Samus Aran: Yes. On the same note as the original, the episode doesn't hide how badly Samus outclassed Boba Fett in versatility, power, and fluidity.
  19. Chuck Norris VS Segata Sanshiro: No. Given how this fight is still going, it'd be inaccurate to call it a tie, a close fight, or a stomp.
  20. Guts VS Nightmare: No. Guts won because his greater endurance and specialized astral weaponry eventually overcame Nightmare's greater power output, which isn't enough of an advantage for us to count the fight.
  21. Iron Man VS Lex Luthor: No. Tony's energy-absorbing Endo-Sym and higher experience were ruled to beat out the overspecialized Lex, which merely explains the outcome without implying it was completely one-sided.
  22. Beast VS Goliath: No. Beast and Goliath were close to even in base stats, meaning their other powers decided this match. Goliath wins due to having more experience and durability, and Beast lacks knowledge about his weakness to sunlight, which isn't enough to make this match completely one-sided.
  23. Solid Snake VS Sam Fisher: No. While the hosts called this victory straightforward, that merely means it was easy to research, not that it was one-sided. Solid Snake won due to more training and better gear, which is only a reason and not evidence for a stomp.
  24. Darth Vader VS Doctor Doom: Yes. This match was a stomp both ways, with Vader easily obliterating a Doombot due to its basic technology and Doom obliterating him in turn. Not only did Doom have more experience and mental protection, but his eldritch powers far exceeded Vader's strength in the Force. Doom's armor can match telekinesis and reality-warping from cosmic threats, placing him far above Vader's power.
  25. Goku VS Superman 2: Yes. The results have remained the same, and so has the one-sidedness of this fight. Wiz and Boomstick maintain how this matchup could never end differently for the same reasons as before, meaning Goku will always be doomed against Superman.
  26. Donkey Kong VS Knuckles: Yes. Knuckles' speed couldn't remotely compete with Donkey Kong, whose strength and durability eclipse him by several orders of magnitude from surviving an explosion that launched him into orbit and punching a moon away.
  27. Wolverine VS Raiden: No. Raiden's vibrational blade could cut Adamantium due to disrupting molecules, which he could capitalize on to win with superior stats. Wolverine wasn't ruled to be completely outmatched by leagues from this explanation.
  28. Hercule Satan VS Dan Hibiki: Yes. While both have reputations as joke characters, such a label is purely relative. Whereas Dan would be pathetic anywhere, Hercule is only so in-context because everyone else in his setting can use ki. When compared to regular humans, Hercule is easily a champion, placing his power leagues above Dan.
  29. Yang VS Tifa: No. After painstaking deliberation, I've decided to not call this match a stomp due to the lack of direct evidence outweighing the vague references to a large power gap. Ben has also said they've changed their minds about the result of this episode since then, making it questionable if they ever had that much conviction here.
  30. Mega Man VS Astro Boy: Yes. Astro Boy eclipses Mega Man in stats, clocking in at twice as physically strong, 200 times faster, and far tougher due to surviving an anti-solar flare bomb. While Wiz and Boomstick say Mega Man's more diverse arsenal "kept Astro Boy on his toes," that merely meant Astro Boy needed to pay close attention to the fight and doesn't contradict it being a stomp, given how even the best martial artist would need to pay attention to a civilian to stomp them.
  31. Green Arrow VS Hawkeye: No. Hawkeye wins this fight due to slightly edging out in stats and arsenal, making this fight extremely close and not a stomp.
  32. Pokémon VS Digimon: Yes. Due to Pokémon evolution being linear and Digivolution being quadratic, WarGreymon outclasses Mega Charizard X by several orders of magnitude everywhere. In no reality could Red and Charizard ever have stood any chance against Tai and Agumon once the latter stopped holding back.
All in all, 14/32 of Season 2 qualifies.

This They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character example was suggested for YMMV.Death Battle on the Locked Pages thread but I am not sure it counts and I am not familiar with Death Battle (as written).

They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: At an early point during the ninth season, Death Battle began a mini-series on social media accounts called Death Battle Feats, which usually is about fun facts about the combatants in an episode, similar to the old series Desk of Death Battle... Which is quite odd considering that it's usually Boomstick narrating for this rather than Jocelyn who, while she does appear more frequently now in the show, would have been perfect for the job. Though this seems to have been addressed as Desk of Death Battle is returning along with Jocelyn for the Summer of 2022.

So if season 3 is the next for a clean up, might I suggest taking out Joker vs. Sweet Tooth and Sonya vs. Cammy?

Joker's only way of victory would be manipulating Sweet Tooth (Needles Kane) and hit him with the Joker Venom, and while he still one, Needles had the stats everywhere else, so it's not really a stomp, plus I don't think it's like Kirby vs. Buu, since Joker had no other way to compete with Needles otherwise.

Cammy vs. Sonya really seemed more even than a stomp and that Sonya simply had more experience and arsenal.

[up][up]I believe this example qualifies, as Jocelyn is relatively underused.

My Season 3 analysis:

  1. Dante VS Bayonetta: No. Bayonetta's physical strength, as her only advantage, fell short against Dante's speed and durability. However, the description here is highly vague, with Wiz and Boomstick only listing a bunch of hyperbolic stuff that isn't that impressive up close. Though Dante held solid advantages, the hosts don't provide enough evidence and numbers to confirm a stomp stat-wise. Without direct evidence of this match being one-sided, it doesn't qualify. I'll cite Travis Touchdown over it.
  2. Bowser VS Ganon: No. Ganon's magic and strategy edged out Bowser's raw strength while both were nigh-invincible. Ganon's saving grace was how he was only weak to holy weapons, and Bowser was vulnerable to sufficient kinetic force. The advantages Ganon has aren't enough to make the match completely one-sided.
  3. Ratchet & Clank VS Jak & Daxter: Yes. Wiz and Boomstick never attempt to hide how much the winners eclipsed the losers. I won't take the time to address every reason why Ratchet and Clank utterly quashed Jak and Daxter because they outclass them everywhere, which is abundantly clear even without any numbers.
  4. Flash VS Quicksilver: Yes. I don't need to say how Flash's speed eclipses Quicksilver by several orders of magnitude in both travel speed and reaction speed, making it likely the ugliest stomp so far.
  5. Joker VS Sweet Tooth: No. Just because Joker had an instant-win toxin and was far more crafty didn't mean the fight would be easy, and Needles outclassed him in base stats and weaponry. Joker's stated reason for winning is managing to manipulate Needles into a face-to-face where he can envenom him, which doesn't imply a hopeless fight.
  6. Mewtwo VS Shadow: Yes. Despite Shadow outclassing Mewtwo almost everywhere, Mewtwo's unparalleled psychic power turned this fight into a no-contest. Even one mental attack would have put Shadow down, which Mewtwo did.
  7. Meta VS Carolina: No. With their strength, skill, and arsenals reducing each other to zero, the clincher in this fight was Carolina's far more personal relationship with Epsilon. Carolina won by the power of friendship with no indication it was a stomp.
  8. Cammy VS Sonya: No. While Sonya possessed obvious advantages in strength, arsenal, tactics, and experience over Cammy's speed and agility, it merely makes the match clear-cut and doesn't imply enough of a stomp due to lacking numbers, so we should err on the side of caution. The dialogue is hyperbolic, not definitive.
  9. Tracer VS Scout: No. The analysis describes several advantages Tracer had over Scout rapid-fire, which doesn't strike hard enough. Though Tracer's reflexes are impressive, they don't seem extreme enough to mark down this match as a stomp.
  10. Ken VS Terry: Yes. Terry's record is far more solid than Ken's, having defeated people like Mars and Krauser, who are far out of the league of Ken's foes like Zangief, Hugo, and Vega. In stats, he also far outclasses Ken, whose best feats are barely superhuman while Terry's far more clearly so in strength, speed, and durability.
  11. Amy Rose VS Ramona Flowers: No. Despite the hosts calling Amy's advantages drastic, the hyperbole is strong here. A closer reading of the analysis shows how Amy's edges were either unelaborated or marginal, so this match doesn't qualify.
  12. Hulk VS Doomsday: No. The results of this match depended on highly technical biology, and while the winner was clear-cut, nothing implied it would be easy for Doomsday due to their close stats.
  13. Zoro VS Ezra: Yes. Zoro's enormous advantages in strength and speed, combined with his unmatched skill in close combat, let him slaughter Ezra with no effort whatsoever.
  14. Deadpool VS Pinkie Pie: Yes (Played With). While this fight ultimately ended in both fighters living, it qualifies because these surreal fighters administered a brutal curb-stomp to the hosts and fourth wall.
6/14 qualify.

Here's my analysis for the bonus episodes. All 5 current ones qualify.

  1. DEATH BATTLE! vs The World: Yes (Parodied). I don't need to specify how badly the DEATH BATTLE! T-Shirt murdered every other T-Shirt in the world.
  2. Vegeta VS Mewtwo?: Yes (Parodied). While both combatants lived, it qualifies because Vegeta and Mewtwo teamed up to stomp Silvermania HQ to oblivion.
  3. ScrewAttack Steam Sale vs. Your Wallet: Yes (Parodied). We all know how badly the games on sale annihilated the money in your wallet.
  4. The Seven Battle Royale: Yes. Considering the gap in stats between each fighter, the Deep couldn't hold a candle to Starlight, who A-Train stomped canonically, who Queen Maeve could easily outlast in versatility and durability, who Billy Butcher effortlessly terminated with his laser baby, who Homelander smashed into a bloody paste in seconds.
  5. Excalibur VS Raiden: Yes. Though Raiden edges out in speed, matches Excalibur in skill, and has more endurance due to his infinite ammunition, Excalibur's far more diverse arsenal, futuristic technology, and raw power orders of magnitude greater left Raiden with no chance.

[up]Rap battles aren't the same thing as an Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny. Also, saying a VS match is Older Than They Think because someone else has already done it is always trivially true due to the sheer scope of the community and borders on People Sit on Chairs.

My Season 4 analysis:

  1. Lara Croft VS Nathan Drake: No. Lara won due to more impressive showings overall, being about 35% stronger and significantly more endurant and well-trained, but it's not a wide enough gap to qualify.
  2. Scrooge McDuck VS Shovel Knight: Yes. Scrooge's vast experience, absurd superhuman physique, and toon physics eclipsed everything Shovel Knight had, easily enough to quash his foe.
  3. Venom VS Bane: Yes. Venom was nearly seven and a half times stronger even while weakened, much faster due to intercepting bullets, and possessed a far superior healing factor, rendering Bane's superior intellect moot against his venomous foe.
  4. Power Rangers VS Voltron: Yes. The Megazord's superior skills became useless in the face of Voltron possessing a far larger arsenal, over five times more strength, and speed and durability orders of magnitude higher.
  5. Natsu VS Ace: No. Both fighters' feats essentially canceled each other out, and Natsu won because his skills and lightning let him exploit Ace's weaknesses, which doesn't imply a stomp and is explicitly explained as extremely close.
  6. Sub-Zero VS Glacius: No. The analysis puts Sub-Zero as winning because of his skills, arsenal, and stronger attacks, which merely explains the outcome without implying a stomp.
  7. Android 18 VS Captain Marvel: No. It's a hard choice, but I ultimately feel this battle doesn't elaborate enough on how much Android 18 outclasses Carol to safely call it a stomp. 18's speed in the episode is 50% more than Marvel's, which the hosts later corrected to be over 10 times, but also revoked 18's energy absorption. The hosts claim Carol "pales in comparison" by way of stats, which is too fast to judge. The episode is extremely volatile and is safer not to list.
  8. Metal Sonic VS Zero: Yes. Zero was eight times faster, had a better arsenal, commanded a superior time stop, and was far more durable from comparing 100 teratons to Metal Sonic's measly 200 kilotons.
  9. Lucario VS Renamon: No. Lucario's Aura and Renamon's speed canceled out, with Lucario winning due to its healing factor, stat boosts, and superior physical strength. The match is explicitly called extremely close and was in no way one-sided.
  10. Balrog VS TJ Combo: No. In a testament to just how close this fight was, the fighters' had less than one one-thousandth of a strength gap and survived equally high falls, with TJ's win coming from purely theoretical stuff. This fight was the anti-curb-stomp battle.
  11. Shredder VS Silver Samurai: No. This fight was extremely close, with stuff like tougher armor balancing out more chinks and teleportation not factoring in due to lack of skill. The rationale for the Shredder's victory is how his slight speed advantage and super form gave him a decent edge, which isn't a stomp at all.
  12. Smokey Bear VS McGruff the Crime Dog: Downplayed. While Wiz and Boomstick ruled that McGruff's slimmer and faster frame could make for a tedious fight against Smokey's superior strength, their wording is vague. It's unclear if this statement meant McGruff could put up a good fight despite Smokey's shapeshifting and superior time-stop or if it merely referred to a hypothetical straight brawl.
  13. Thor VS Wonder Woman: Yes. Wonder Woman outclassed Thor in speed through trans-time scaling, beat him by 8000 times in strength, and could bypass Thor's superior durability while he couldn't do the same despite her being somewhat squishier due to weapon differences. Diana's victory was well-earned and easy.
  14. Naruto VS Ichigo: Yes. This fight was an extremely brutal stomp for Naruto, with Ichigo's 40% greater speed being his only advantage. Not only was Naruto's superpower set significantly more viable, but even highballing Ichigo's power and durability in the most unreasonable way doesn't even let him match base Naruto blowing a hole in the moon, let alone super mode Naruto scaling to Toneri splitting the moon in half.
  15. Batman Beyond VS Spider-Man 2099: No. While presenting Terry's significant advantages in strength, speed, assistance, equipment, and training put Miguel in a bad situation, it's not presented as if the fight would be utterly one-sided.
  16. Sephiroth VS Vergil: No. While not particularly close, this fight also isn't an undeniable stomp. Sephiroth was three and a half times stronger while Vergil was slightly faster, with Sephiroth's more potent healing factor, ability to exploit Vergil's weakness to illusions, and finishing move winning the day. While Vergil couldn't win this match, he still put up a good fight.
6.5/16 qualify.

[up]Oh okay, while Ace had very little, if not a single, way to actually beat Natsu, Natsu still had to work extremely hard to win his fight. The difference in strength really has to be drastic, like not like Goku meeting a new stronger opponent, more like someone being leagues above their weight class, like Zero vs. Metal Sonic.

May I suggest putting in this for Unexpected Character in YMMV as of the upcoming Trunks Vs Silver announcement?

  • When Trunks was announced in the mid-season preview for Season 9, many people were expecting him to take on Silver the Hedgehog. And while some people were expecting Silver's Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) variant to be used, what many were not expecting was for Trunks from Dragon Ball Heroes to be used, considering how that series has never been brought up in any Dragon Ball-related Death Battle before outside of really brief snippets of the anime shorts in analysis segments.

Would Black Adam vs Apocalypse qualify as a Curb-Stomp Battle? The post-fight analysis mentions Apocalypse having a significant edge in quite a lot of factors.

Well, Apocalypse could sense Black Adam trying to exploit his seed weakness. He also could absorb all of Black Adam's attacks easily. He also could just mind-control him and even if he somehow died, he could revive himself fast. And as Apocalypse takes more of Black Adam's lightning, Adam himself gets weaker. Yeah, Black Adam had no chance.

I certainly think that at least the animation is a stomp. Black Adam does not get one meaningful hit in during the entire fight: whatever Apocalypse doesn't No-Sell is instantly undone by his Healing Factor. By the end of the battle, Apocalypse is in as good a shape as he was at the start (if not better), while Black Adam... isn't. This gives the impression that the only reason the fight lasted as long as it did is because Apocalypse was intentionally holding back to toy with his opponent.

[up] I don't think you should be the sole arbiter of what goes on that page. The point of this thread is that everyone can discuss examples related to the show.

Proposed writeup:

  • "Black Adam VS Apocalypse" showed En Sabah Nur easily countering everything Teth-Adam could throw at him. While both fighters were found to be relatively even in terms of base stats, Apocalypse was able to match or nullify nearly all of Black Adam's various other powers while overwhelming him with his own varied abilities. Black Adam's only victory condition was destroying Apocalypse's Death Seed, which he could figure out through the Wisdom of Zehuti, but Apocalypse's powerful telepathy, which is powerful enough to overcome the Courage of Mehen, would alert him to this. Most importantly, Apocalypse's Energy Absorption would let him steal Black Adam's power source, the Living Lightning: the more attacks he absorbed, the weaker Black Adam would get, further increasing the gap between the two. The animation reflects the one-sidedness of this matchup, as Apocalypse either No-Sells or instantly regenerates from every single attack Black Adam throws at him, and he comes out of the duel completely unscathed after literally stomping his opponent's face into the ground.
