Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Is this really enough to qualify for the trope? From YMMV.X Force 1991:

It's 2023, The Simpsons is still a thing, I'n pretty sure Batman: The Animated Series gets repeated, and many older stories show or use the WTC.

In this case, the World Trade Center does play a major role as the setting of one story, but...

Still feels a bit tentative to me. Views?

I kinda lost the plot with UPP cleanup, but I agree Simpsons and BTAS remain relevant today and UPP isn't for "any work that happens to show the World Trade Center".

I found this on YMMV, The Orville S 1 E 02 Command Performance:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Although the episode technically has a happy ending, there is no indication of the Orville crew rescuing anyone else from the zoo other than the alien child. One fellow "exhibit" met earlier in the episode is seen still captive as everyone ignores him and watches the projected TV show, and even though it is indicated in dialogue that the zoo includes members of both Alara's and Bortus' own species, there is no indication given of either being rescued.

There’s no way Harsher in Hindsight is the right trope. Which do you think would be better fitting? Esoteric Happy Ending? Only the Leads Get a Happy Ending? Fridge Horror?

From YMMV.World Of Final Fantasy:

  • Unexpected Character:
    • This game has a bunch of characters from the main-numbered Final Fantasy games...along with Sherlotta and the Undead Princess. From Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. A spin-off game.
      • Lampshaded and justified in the Undead Princess' entry in the "Who's Who"; World of Final Fantasy and Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time share the same character designer.

I believe the writer of that last part misunderstood how lampshaded and justified tropes work. Justified Tropes require an in-universe explanation, and an in-game data log mentioning a behind-the-scenes aspect doesn't count as lampshading IMO.

[up]Delete the whole "lampshaded and justified" part as natter.

[up][up]Either Fridge Horror or Esoteric Happy Ending depending on whether the victims still being captive is implied or shown outright. For the record, the "Hindsight" items have their own dedicated thread in long-term projects.

Love Live! Superstar!!

The Other Wiki's page for Love Live! Superstar!! now mentions that Natsumi Onitsuka's Catchphrase is "Oninuts!", but when I decide to search for this catcphrase itself, aside from the ocassional coincidental name overlaps the only thing I seen otherwise is on her member introduction in the School Idol Festival 2's introduction page, and this is being referenced by some posts from various sites such as this Twitter Tweet, several non-english sites that I can't bother translating right now, and MyAnimeList on the discussion for Love Live! Superstar!! 2nd season's Episode 1 and Episode 5.

Can it qualify to be a Memetic Mutation to put on the Memes.Love Live page though?

From the Anime & Manga folder of Condemned by History:

  • Oreimo was a phenomenon in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as it was one of the first light novels to combine a Harem Genre story with characters and stories that examined otaku culture. Fans loved being able to read about characters that shared their own interests, and the anime adaptation exposed the source material to an even bigger number of fans.

However, several key issues began to propagate through the story that would ultimately lead to its downfall. The slice of life and otaku-centric content was put on the back burner for intrusive harem tropes, the anime increasing Kirino's bad behavior while still treating her as the primary love interest, and sidelining and derailing fan-favorite characters. But what really sealed the novel's fate was the ending, which saw protagonist Kyousuke alienating all the other girls to turn Incest Subtext into outright text by hooking up with his own sister. The final nail in the coffin was the sheer amount of copycat light novels in the next few years that rehashed the Brother–Sister Incest plot of Oreimo to a shameless degree, along with degrading the observations of otaku media and culture into simply pointing out media clichés while still indulging in them, seemingly for no other reason than cheap and easy pandering.

Even the original author of Oreimo would fall victim to the backlash years later, when his follow-up work Eromanga Sensei was adapted to anime and quickly panned; most reviews noted that Eromanga Sensei took all the flaws that had been present in Oreimo and cranked them up to an intolerable degree. To this day, the first and only thing anime fans could tell you about Oreimo is that it's the show where the protagonist breaks up with his girlfriend to get intimate with his sister, apart from the interesting fact that the show, along with Eromanga Sensei, wasn't a Star-Derailing Role for all the voice actors involved.

Not only is this a giant Wall of Text, I think this is simply a Western thing, as I believe this series is still popular in Japan.

Found this while cleaning up ZCEs on Agree to Disagree and I'm not sure any of it is salvageable? It's the only real life example, and the indentation is a mess too.

  • Averted by Aumann's agreement theorem, which states that two rational people will always agree. Non notable aversion?
    • Double subverted by pretty much every human ever, who either is irrational, doesn't accept that the other side is rational, or both. Technically, you could have something where Alice is rational, and she believes Bob is rational, but she doesn't believe that Bob believes she's rational, so she won't agree with Bob, but it doesn't generally get that far. General example
      • Or rather the case that there is asymetry of information and unequal priori believes. ???

Avatar: The Last Airbender "The Headband":

Moment Killer:

  • Runs in the family: Azula does it to Zuko and Mai during their sunset picnic. Azula does it on purpose. Zuko simply doesn't think. (He's older and more experienced than most of the kids on the show, it's just that he's a bit too self-focused to realize other people might have relationships outside him.)

Both of these describe the same moment. I just don't think it qualifies as a Moment Killer given that unlike Aang and Katara, Zuko and Mai are already a couple who don't need to build up courage to express feeling for another.

I don't know why it wasn't mentioned before, but

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance:

It's possible to get softlocked (Unwinnable, might be either by design or unintentionally) at the final chapter, provided that 1. Ike has too low Str stat and can't deal damage to the Final Boss, 2. The game is played on Hard difficulty (Maddening in Japanese version also works) since there is a choice of 3 units that can actually damage the final boss but they only join in for the second part of the fight, 3. The only other unit that can damage the Final Boss (that is a dragon) is dead - This is since the Final Boss is hardcoded to be taking no damage from any other unit attack, that is, everyone that is not Ike, or the aftermentioned Laguz. In short, it's possible for the final boss to be unbeatable.

Unwinnable by Design, or Unintentionally Unwinnable?

I think getting Un-Cancelled should disqualify a show from that page unless it's a separate series (CH is a continuation, even if it's listed separately due to being a Max "original"). I had similar questions about Too Good to Last though, since CH got revived because of fan demand.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Mutually Exclusive Power-Ups:

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night: The Aegis Plate to stop spike damage, is a piece of armor that's middle-of-the-road in actual Defense stat boosting, with the best armor having an almost double. So it's a mutually exclusive choice in what's more important at the time.

Between 10:59 to 11:57, would the clip be a good video example of Curb-Stomp Battle?

I've been wondering for a while: could The Railway Series have unbuilt Sentient Vehicle? While it's definitely not the first to use that trope — The Little Engine That Could is even older — it still predates works that "take the trope for granted" such as Cars by a long shot. The vehicles are realistic-ish ones that happen to be able to talk, so they're at the mercy whatever humans decide to do with them, which includes being scrapped.

What about this example from Unpacking?

  • Straight Gay: The protagonist left her student flat to move in with a guy, only to move back to her childhood home a year later, after a nasty breakup (what with her refused to leave his picture out in the open). The last half of the game involves her moving into her first apartment as a proper adult, another woman moving in with her, and the two of them later moving into a two-storage apartment with an baby-room as the final level.

I was going to add that the protagonist consistently having several games and sports equipment suggests some degree of tomboyishness, but since she's never shown onscreen until the final shot, it's unknown if she exhibits stereotypical lesbian/bisexual traits. However, that would make it Ambiguously Gay, which is already covered in the page's Ambiguously Bi example.

"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"
