Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Questions about some Tainted by the Preview entries on YMMV.My Adventures With Superman:
- Tainted by the Preview:
- A minority of folks became irritated with Superman getting another starring show. While it's been over 20 years since his last animated series, he was also in several team-up cartoons, multiple direct-to-video movies, and multiple live-action series, though one starred his cousin, but he was still a frequent guest star. Those fans wish DC had instead gone with a lower-tier hero.
- A few fans aren't big fans of Superman's suit, whether it be bringing back the red trunks, having his belt be red instead of yellow or gold, or find the sigil on his chest too angular.
- Of course, there are fans who object to Lois's short hair and Jimmy's Race Lift. Though just as many others are in favor of their designs.
- A number of people have expressed worry that moving the series to [adult swim] will result in the show being filled with crude or gross-out humor similar to the block's other programs or be forced to add pointless violence and gore.note
In order:
- The first bullet seems like it wouldn't be including fans of the series, since the very premise is apparently not something they're into. Should it be cut?
- Would this fit something like They Changed It, Now It Sucks! better? It's so minor that I can't imagine it tainting the whole show for someone.
- Also fits They Changed It, Now It Sucks! better, but reads as a stealth Broken Base entry.
- This one is based on a misconception/misinformation. I know it's YMMV and all, so I'm not saying that it's a nonexistent opinion, rather that anyone who would actually have knowledge about the show's development history would know this wouldn't be true.
Found this in Characters.A Series Of Unfortunate Events 2017 Antagonists.
- Broken Bird: The reveal of how he lost his arms paints him as such. As a member of VFD, Fernald had a love for marine biology and worked at Anwhistle Aquatics where his partner Gregor developed the Medusoid Mycelium with plans to use it on their enemies. Fernald thought it was too dangerous but after Gregor refused to stop, Fernald burning down the research facility to stop the mushroom from being used. He found the act alone to be the worst experience of his life but on top of that, a flaming piece of wood hit him burning his hands so severely that they had to be amputated and the act of arson caused him to be kicked out of the organization.
The first one i agree should be cut. Makes me wonder if the many Batman media have these type of examples. On the third it does come off as a stealth BB.
Agreed.
"I wish they'd made a completely different show about my preferred character" is not Tainted by the Preview.
It's not about the work itself, and it's not actually dependent on any sort of trailer or preview. Cut.
Are these shoehorned examples of Easy Evangelism since it must involve religion?
- Captain Planet and the Planeteers. There are several minor examples, but one of the most ridiculous is when a character manages to convince a mercenary army of the error of their ways with one speech. And in the infamous AIDS episode. Hundreds of people are (easily) turned against a star basketball player because he has HIV. One speech from a big blue man in little red pants later, they all love him again. Perhaps justified in-universe because Heart Is an Awesome Power.
- In a Phineas and Ferb episode, rock band The Bettys are three Jerkasses who treat Candace and Stacy like dirt through most of the tour, but Candace is able to convince them to do a Heel–Face Turn with one little "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
"Despite the title it can refer to any belief system, religious or otherwise", according to the trope page.
I don't know where else to post this: I'm very confused about how Definition-Only Pages are supposed to work. It says "no examples anywhere" on Example Sectionectomy. Are they allowed to be potholed or not? What does "it may be linked from an example of another trope to provide context, and it may be linked from a trope or work description" mean? Does this mean we are allowed to link to them from other pages as long as they are not a work page?

pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSOur understanding: Potholes to Definition-Only Pages are allowed anywhere contextually relevant, though any that are also YMMV, Darth/Sugar, or Flame Bait have to also follow the appropriate rules for that per What Goes Where on the Wiki. You cannot list them as examples on any page.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. So, as I understand it -
- No example bullets on work pages
- No example bullets on the Definition Only trope page itself
- We can link or pothole from the intro of a work or trope page
- We can link or pothole from an example bullet for a different trope
So this would be fine:
- Creator Breakdown: The About the Author text on the paperback edition of The Swamp of 20 Horrors mentions that Horace Cole was struggling with drugs and a bitter divorce when writing the novel, and attributes the deaths of so many returning characters to his bleak state of mind.
...as would a version of that example which potholed About the Author for the same purpose.
Does that make sense?
Edit: , but I think we largely agree?

For example, you can't list Bishōnen in the trope list of a sparkly anime boy anymore, but you can give him an entry that looks like this:
- Pretty Boy: He is slender and notably handsome in a feminine way. Sakura even describes him as a Bishōnen.
Can My Real Daddy be used for adaptation of a character?
Alright, what about if it's potholed or linked to from somewhere that is not a work or character page? Like, a regular trope page? My understanding is that we can leave it as-is if the trope is being used or referenced in-universe, but not otherwise. I'm specifically asking about Off-Model
pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSOkay, check me on this: would you put this example on Creepy Good, Adorable Abomination, or both?
- Reign of the Seven Spellblades: After Nanao Hibiya severs Vera Miligan's left hand at the climax of volume 1, she turns up in volume 2 having magically reanimated the appendage as a familiar, naming it Milihand. Since it's literally a self-willed severed hand, it freaks the protagonists out initially, but since it's designed to be helpful to mages, they actually find its behavior rather endearing after they get used to its appearance.
On Spiritual Successor, the following example exists. Should it be removed?
- As several fans have pointed out, "The Lost Fable" from RWBY makes for a surprisingly good animated adaptation of The Silmarillion. What certainly helps are the numerous parallels between the two work's respective Big Bads of Salem and Sauron.
The link is dead. I can't even find an archive of the document, meaning there's no record of this discussion. So, I went on Google adventure and quested through the main fandom hotspots that I know of to see what the extent of comparison is... and I can't find anything. I then adventured through the hatedom hotspots and did find a couple of old rants picking apart the idea of making LOTR comparisons, but they were generalised, unsourced posts about the fandom in general and therefore not very helpful in tracking down the link's content or any sign of support for the link's content.
This leaves me thinking that this was just one blog post that a couple of people did or didn't agree with, but that it's not a widespread opinion and it hasn't received widespread commentary across either the fandom or the hatedom. A look at the history of the page shows that this entry was originally on Spiritual Adaptation, and was copied across to Spiritual Successor during the TRS that merged the two tropes.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Is it sapient or just a pet? I'd say Creepy Good for the former or Creepy Cute for the latter. (A disembodied hand is nowhere close to an abomination on any count, and that entire group of tropes has undergone so much decay that it'd be best just to avoid using them in general.)
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableWeblinks aren't examples anyway.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.Good point. The entry doesn't tell us in what ways the episode is similar to the Silmarillion, it just says they are. So, it's ZCE anyway. I'll remove the example.

Can I Want My Beloved to Be Happy be used platonically? As in encouraging a friend to be with the person they love even if it means they'll grow more distant to you?
I tried looking for some platonic examples on the trope page but I don't know if they actually fit...
- The Owl House gives us a platonic example with Eda, who doesn't seem very fond of former mean-girl Amity. That said, she's nothing but supportive to her apprentice/foster daughter's crush on the girl and is happy to encourage her if that's what she wants.
- A platonic example occurs on the Dream SMP. After finding out that Ranboo married Tubbo, Tommy was initially somewhat hostile towards Ranboo due to a fear of being replaced, but he becomes much more civil and amicable about it after knowing that Ranboo makes Tubbo happy.
I was with you until I saw Eda which is Ehhhhhhhhhh. I really dont think you should use this trope because there's always the hint of romance and I am not comfy with using this with a minor and an adult.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I don't think it fits even in the platonic sense, nothing about the entry indicates that Eda is particularly protective of Luz for not wanting her to get with Amity. Even its equivalent Boyfriend-Blocking Dad and the lke wouldn't fit in this case.

Thetropemaster101 has sent me a message about most recent edits for the character page for the Superman from the DC Animated Universe, and honestly, I have no idea what's he trying to do here.
He is very obsessed with explaining how different DCAU Superman is to his comic book counterpart, but his edits feel gratuitous at best, downright irrelevant at worst. What do I mean with this?
Superman's characterization has been all over the place in the comics, particularly in his identity as Clark Kent, but Tropemaster seems to think that the DCAU presents radical changes to Superman's portrayal.
- He is considerably less dorky as Clark Kent compared to most versions. In the comic books from the Silver Age and the Christopher Reeve movies; yes, Clark was a dorky nerd. In the John Byrne reboot and Lois & Clark, Clark is a lot more assertive.
- As mentioned above in Adaptational Angst Upgrade, this Superman is shown to be more short-termed, fearful, insecure, and cynical compared to more versions in addition to retaining his idealism. Apart from the fact that redirecting to other parts of the page is a huge no-no, Superman has struggled with some pretty dark topics throughout his history, such as political corruption, depression, loss of loved ones, detachment from humanity, etc.
- Also, like most modern versions, he prefers to be identified as Clark first in order to keep himself sane and believes Superman is a way of helping people. Again, John Byrne did it first.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just being too harsh on Tropemaster but I don't want this page to look like it's talking down to readers by explaining in excruciating detail how DCAU Superman is different from the Superman from the modern comics.
So, what do you think?
Honestly, Adaptional Angst Upgrade can only truly be applicable is in the series finale in which the trust between him and humanity is broken because he was brainwashed by Darkseid to invade Earth. But we don't get a full exploration on it. Also, the Portrayal should be applicable on what was going on the comics atvthe time or general portrayal.
You cant link PM's. Not only they can only be seen by you and them but there is also a rule forbidding sharing the exact contents of a PM. You CAN make a summary of it which you did already thankfully.
