Art by Crash X Fusion: All right, my friends. To War!

The Glandus War finally begins and several plans are set into motion.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • The Ace: According to Kadabe, Celine is the Top Oracle Student of Hexside.
  • Accidental Pervert: As Boscha and Batters point out to Hunter, no matter how he puts it his uncle had him bug a house full of mostly women and two teenage girls.
Hunter: It's not like that! We were just...following Luz's progress-
Boscha: You're really not helping your case, you creep!
  • Alone Among the Couples: After kissing Gus and seeing that he didn't feel a spark, Amelia confesses that she feels left out among her friends since Amity, Skara and Cat are all in relationships and fears she may have moved too fast with her feelings for him.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: With the help of her third eye, Boscha managed to catch the EC sigils on the wrists of several of Glandus' teachers, despite their efforts to keep them hidden.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Prof. Serkis uses his during his bout against Prof. Redback.
  • The Bus Came Back: Bangles, Zepher and Brian return for the first time since their arrest in "Doctor's Visits and Party Incidents". Thanks to Emily busting them out of the Conformatorium, they show up in Glandus to take revenge on Amity.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Lilith doesn't remember Craig until he mentions his name. Justified, since she never saw him without his mask.
  • Call-Back:
    • Horace double-crossing Hexside and telling Emily to capture Gus to get Luz to come to Glandus is noted by Ms. Heinous.
    • Craig getting fired for not stopping Luz and Boscha's duel is brought up.
  • Cliffhanger: Hexside's getting decimated, Amity's left at her muggers' mercy, Prof. Snope gets captured by Glandus students, and the Owl House is under attack. But the worst thing the chapter could end on is Luz being impaled by Emily and falling unconscious.
  • Continuity Cameo:
    • Stella appears in a flashback at the beginning along with the opening scene, but isn't seen at all for the rest of the chapter.
    • Athena is shown having a phone call with Nicole regarding Boscha not coming home.
    • Iago is seen talking to Kitsuni via crystal ball to summon her to a mandatory meeting with the Order.
    • Emperor Belos and the Coven heads are shown watching the war at the castle.
    • Steve briefly appears to pay his respects to those who've fallen in the castle's memorial room.
    • William and Darius get another quick cameo before things switch to Hunter dropping off more of the latter's belongings to Gavin.
    • Angmar calls Gavin to tell him about Boscha disappearing. He later appears as the last Glandus student in Lumity's way.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Gus mentions when Mabel asked him out in "Summerween Fright".
    • Eda stealing from the Spice Demons back in "To Serve" is mentioned again.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Eda turns out to have a secret stash of weapons including rifles in case any of her multiple enemies tries to attack her.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Luz and Amity plow through several Glandus students within their own halls with hardly a scratch to show for it.
    • The top students of Glandus level several students on their own.
  • Darkest Hour: Glandus has taken an early lead in the war as several of Hexside's students and staff are getting taken down. At the same time, the Clawthornes are trapped at the Owl House by Craig's team.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Kitsuni, Gus and Amelia are all taken out of the picture before the war even starts: Iago tells Kitsuni to come to a meeting with the Order Oberon set up to keep her from interfering with his plan kill Luz and Amity, while Nina ambushes Gus and Amelia at the Treasure Shack, heavily injuring Amelia and sending her to Hexside to send a message while she takes Gus to Glandus so Luz and Amity come to rescue him and they walk into Emily's trap. Subverted for Gus when he escapes his imprisonment with Boscha, Hunter and Batters.
  • Dirty Coward: Emily proves herself to be one after she stabs Luz while she's incapable of defending herself and after rendering herself blind, no less.
  • Dissonant Serenity
  • Distant Prologue: The chapter begins on a flashback to Emily's first day attending Glandus High 3 years ago.
  • Duel to the Death: Zig-zagged. Simon and Cain have a personal showdown on the grudgby field to see if Simon's strong enough to defeat his brother. While Simon does last awhile, Cain comes out on top when he knocks him out.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Dusty tries to take on Glandus' school mascot with his allies putting their faith in the top Beast Keeper. He's immediately devoured.
Random students: How did that guy even become the top student of his class!?
    • Prof. Snope couldn't have picked a worse time to fall asleep as he gets captured soon after.
  • Expy
  • Eye Scream: Initially lampshaded by Emily when Luz spray paints a glyph, stating she should've sprayed her eyes instead of making graffiti. Luz invokes this on herself to keep from devouring Emily's palisman by blinding herself with light glyphs.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Due to how fast they were going and how quick Ms. Heinous' shadow was, Luz and Amity don't catch the shadow before it causes them to fly off Amity's abomi-bike.
  • First Kiss: Amelia not only tells Gus how she feels, she gives him his first kiss. His inability to react to it causes him to panic.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The Boss mentions that he has a son, but doesn't elaborate.
    • There's a reason why Terra bet on Glandus to win the school war.
    • Who Eda got her weapons cache from also plays into things in the future.
  • For the Evulz: Even though Emily stabs Luz, she refuses to let her die. She intends to keep her alive long enough to watch her school fall and her family be wiped out.
  • Given Name Reveal: Gavin's anteater palisman is named Artur.
  • A Head at Each End
  • Hidden Supplies: Apparently, Eda keeps a supply of guns and swords in the Owl House, leftover from a break-up from one of her exes.
  • Honor Before Reason: Luz blinds herself so she doesn't consume Emily's palisman essence. Unfortunately, it leaves her open to an attack.
  • Hope Spot: It seems that a couple of students saved Willow and Skara and are giving them backup so they can regroup with everyone. Then once their backs are turned, those students are revealed to be Glandus illusionists.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After Luz blinds herself, Emily takes advantage of it by impaling her stomach with the Sword of Adam.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Hunter learns about Bria's disappearance, then he and Gavin learn about Boscha's from Angmar. He later learns that Craig works with Glandus and that Boscha was part of the incident that got him fired.
    • Principal Bump discovers that Prof. Blanc has allied with Glandus.
    • Boscha learns of Hunter having been friends with Luz and the bug he planted in the Owl House from Gus.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When asked why Emily wasn't punished for revealing the truth about the boiling zit incident, Belos says there wasn't a point as Luz had already been revealed to be human due to the petrification ceremony. As such, it was only a matter of time before people made the connection between the incident and her.
  • Lampshade Hanging
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Right before Gus can tell Boscha that Hunter's the Golden Guard and Belos' nephew, Hunter tells her that he's a spy for the Emperor and his uncle's a different person.
  • Lured into a Trap: Nina captures Gus so Luz and Amity would come to Glandus High to rescue him so the students there including Emily would get the jump on them.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Sonya's lion palisman has a horn on its head.
  • Multi-Part Episode: And so begins the first part of the long-awaited "Glandus War".
  • Mythology Gag: It's mentioned that Darius' family name used to be "Deamonne", his confirmed canon surname.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The hooded ginger-haired illusionist girl who appeared in "Something Ventured, Someone Framed" is called Scotty.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Luz, Willow and Gus used to hang out in an old quarry until the construction coven kicked them out to build a new coven base. In retaliation, Luz sicced a swarm of fire bees on the workers.
    • Whatever dastardly deed Desmond Deamonne did to disgrace his family name enough to warrant the change to "Nightshade".
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: With Scrooge McDuck here of course he gets one of these mentioned; sometime in the past, he saved the Yokai Realm.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • William seems to figure out that Belos might have cloned him but can't think too much on it due to the creature.
    • Amity is understandably horrified that she has to go up against her muggers again and alone since Emily separated her from Luz to fight her.
    • Hunter goes pale upon hearing from Boscha that Terry Grease works at Glandus High.
  • Out of Focus: The rest of the Owl House crew only appears when they're cornered by Craig's squadron seeking revenge.
  • Patchwork Kids: Implied. Graye's previous belief that Luz was Eda and Raine's daughter may have been due to Luz's complexion being closer to Raine's.
  • Point of Divergence: Adegast is still alive, having survived the events of this universe's version of "Witches Before Wizards".
  • The Reveal:
    • The Boss took in another girl named Sonya when he took in Emily. The Boss also has a son who he's disappointed with.
    • The excuse used to explain why Boscha didn't come home last night to her parents is that she's working on a school project with one of the star students.
    • Gus is hinted to be aromantic as he didn't show much of a reaction to Amelia kissing him and admits he's never felt any sort of attraction before.
    • The Golden Guard helping Darius is the original William, who admits to being Caleb's father.
    • Darius' family used to be known as the Deamonnes, but when his grandfather Desmond did something disgraceful during the Savage Ages, they changed their name to "Nightshade".
    • Craig has recruited Adegast (who survived his past encounter with Luz and Ed), Capt. Hook's crew, the Spice Demons and an unknown creature to launch a siege. on the Owl House.
    • Eda has a hidden weapons cache in the Owl House, all the weapons coming from one of her exes.
    • Scrooge McDuck and Rhombulous are revealed to be members of the Order, while Genie is confirmed to be a member.
      • Other members of the Order include Kebechet, Persephone (the other co-ruler of the Underworld), Sun Wukong the Monkey King, Ganesha, deity of the Hindu pantheon, Merlin the Wizard and the founder, Yen Sid.
      • Scrooge has been to the Yokai Realm and is seen as a hero by its inhabitants.
      • Rhombulous joined the Order after the Magic High Commission had disbanded.
    • Eve obtained a rabbit palisman.
    • Dusty is bonded with a unicorn named Eunice.
    • Ms. Heinous is the one who ordered Nina to capture one of Luz's friends in order to draw in her and Amity to Glandus.
    • Emily broke Bangles, Zepher and Brian out of the Conformatorium.
    • Some of Glandus' teachers are fired members of the Emperor's Coven including Grease, a former drill instructor whose abusive methods got him a dishonorable discharge for abusing/getting scouts killed. Grease is also the one who gave Principal Bump his scar in the last Glandus war.
    • The Sword of Adam is implied to be harmful to cambions.
    • Glandus High's mascot is a grendletroll, a troll with three pairs of gorilla arms.
  • Sadist: Emily has officially proven herself as such. She broke Bangles, Zepher and Brian out of prison to exact their revenge on Amity, betting it'll either be them or a panic attack that does her in while fatally injuring Luz only to admit she's keeping her alive long enough to bear witness as she loses everyone she cares about (whether or not she ok'd Craig's siege on the Owl House is unknown). Add to that her deal with Asi to allow him to dissect Luz and she is treading a very dark path.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Angmar is the last student standing after Luz and Amity take down several students. He decides to cut his losses and high-tail it.
Angmar: Nope! (runs off in a panic)
Luz: Well, at least one of them is smart enough.
  • Secret Test of Character: Belos seems to consider the war one for Luz to show everyone what she's made of.
  • Shipper on Deck: Adrian Graye is implied to be one for Eda and Raine, as he used to believe Luz was the child they had in secret.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Side Bet: Weevil informs Calypso that he's betting on Hexside to win the war on a betting pool the coven scouts have going on. Terra immediately bets her rainy day savings for Glandus.
  • Slasher Smile: Emily seems to sport a terrifying one when she sees that the Sword of Adam can cut Luz in her cambion state.
  • Storm the Castle: While Craig leads a team to the Owl House to wipe out the Clawthornes and Camila, Luz and Amity head to Glandus alone to rescue Gus.
  • Swallowed Whole: Dusty's fate when he faced the grendletroll.
  • Tempting Fate: Felicia believes she's safe outside Hexside since the battle's going on indoors only for a few Glandus students to appear and start chasing her down.
  • Test Kiss: Amelia uses her First Kiss with Gus to test whether he could have feelings for her: he doesn't.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Hunter has Flapjack free Batters from the detention pit without asking for anything in return.
  • Trash the Set: Nina levels the Treasure Shack while fighting Amelia and capturing Gus.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Not only are the Glandus students still looking down on Luz and Amity, their Potions teacher decides to challenge Ms. Traveler to a fight.
  • Undying Loyalty: Lilith attempts to accompany Eda in aiding Hexside in the war, regardless of what everyone thinks of her because it was her school, too.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Luz blinds herself so she wouldn't eat Emily's palisman. How does Emily repay that kindness? By stabbing Luz in the gut.
  • The Un-Reveal: How the heck did Emily separate Luz and Amity while they were in the same hallway?
  • Unseen No More:
    • Following a mention in "Unenployment Filing" Persephone, the co-ruler of the Underworld alongside Hades, physically debuts.
    • Kebechet, Anu Bist/Jack's sister who was mentioned in "Whatever Happened to Anu Bist?" also makes her physical and present day debut.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The chapter begins on a flashback to Emily's first day at Glandus as a freshman, during which she saves Stella from someone messing with her and Stella offers to be her friend which Emily accepts.
  • Villain Team-Up: Under Craig's command, many of Eda's enemies as well as Capt. Hook (who's Amity's enemy) band together in an attempt to lay siege to the Owl House and wipe everyone in it out.
  • The Voice: The Boss doesn't physically appear in this chapter, he's only heard communicating with Emily. The same goes for Nicole, who talks to Athena over a call.
  • Wham Episode: The school war begins with Glandus High overwhelming Hexside.
    • Oberon gets Kitsuni to leave Hexside with a mandatory meeting with the Order, which reveals the remaining members;
    • Craig leads a siege on the Owl House with the help of Adeghast, Capt. Hook, the spice demons and an unknown assailant;
    • Gus is captured by Nina and has to face her with Boscha and Hunter;
    • Luz and Amity's attempt to rescue him leads to them getting separated with Amity having to face her recently escaped muggers while Luz is eventually impaled by Emily and seemingly captured.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Belos seems to be playing one: no matter the winner of the war, he sees the whole thing as an opportunity to scout for potential EC recruits. He also believes that it's going to serve as a trial for how much Luz has grown.
