Friends is a dark AU Amphibia fanfiction that also serves as a Recursive Fanfiction for The Plantar Family Pet written by DarkHououmon. The story diverges at an undisclosed point from The Plantar Family Pet, with the girls all getting caught by King Andrias quicker than in the source story. From here, events take a far more sinister turn, with King Andrias subjecting the girls to increasingly cruel treatment. The trio's willpower will be tested in ways they've never imagined as they fight to an ever dwindling hope of rescue.

It can be read here.

An interquel, Amphibia Sunshine, can be found here.

The sequel, Amphibia Enemies, began on March 3rd and can be found here.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
    • The Plantar Family Pet already provided this for the girls, but Friends takes it even further. The girls are subjected to months of both physical and mental torture that leaves them broken even after they're finally rescued.
    • Anne has her arm ripped off just for trying to protect her friends.
    • Marcy has her back broken, placed in a sensory isolation chamber, and later has one of her legs and part of her left ear eaten and ripped off.
    • Sasha suffers the worst of it, with King Andrias being obsessed with her in particular. Her right eye is lost in an experiment. She's broken into purring for the king whenever he demands it. A muzzle is drilled into her jaws while she's awake. He routinely holds her mouth shut just because he can. He obsesses over her blonde hair and he's scarily focused on her in particular to get pregnant.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Parisia still has some of her spice from canon, but she's noticeably nicer to the girls here.
    • The olms as a whole. They're less wary of outsiders and are sympathetic to the girls' plight. They go out of their way to save Anne and her friends and help them heal from their trauma.
  • Adaptational Villainy: This fic takes the already more ruthless King Andrias of The Plantar Family Pet and transforms him into an even crueler more violent beast, committing acts that would leave even Aldrich of canon stunned.
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • As punishment for continuing to defy him, King Andrias rips Anne's right arm and devours it.
    • Later, he forces Sasha to eat Marcy's left leg for no other reason than his own amusement.
  • Animal Motif:
    • Anne keeps her cat-like behavior of The Plantar Family Pet.
    • Later, Marcy and Sasha develop feline behaviors as well.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse:
    • When King Andrias really wants something specific from the girls, he offers to make them a deal. It becomes rapidly clear to the girls they have no choice but to accept as King Andrias keeps upping the stakes to force them to comply with his 'deal' he's making them.
    • Seeing how protective Sasha was being over her friends, King Andrias uses this to force her to be his test subject, going as far as threatening Marcy to achieve it.
  • Artificial Limbs: Both Anne and Marcy get new robotic limbs courtesy of the olms.
  • Asshole Victim: With the hell he's put the girls through, it's very hard to feel any sympathy for King Andrias when Mother Olm tears him apart and when he meets his end at the hands of a furious Anne.
  • Behavioral Conditioning:
    • After being targeted and abused for an extended period of time, Sasha had learned to 'purr on command' whenever King Andrias wanted her to.
    • King Andrias made it a habit to hold Sasha's mouth shut and it got to the point where Sasha struggles to speak in his presence unless given permission to talk.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Seeing King Andrias torment an innocent olm child is enough for Sasha to break out of her fear and unleash her fury against him.
    • After a scared Sasha explains what King Andrias tried to do to her, Anne is so enraged that she goes calamity and chases down the injured king just to kill him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Both Anne and Marcy get their moments.
    • King Andrias learned this the hard way when normally sweet and gentle Mother Olm attacks him for hurting Sasha.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • The olms rampage through King Andrias's castle to rescue the girls.
    • Lysil and Angwin launch themselves at King Andrias and impale him before he can continue hurting Marcy.
    • Mother Olm utterly trounces King Andrias after finding him tormenting a terrified Sasha.
  • Bittersweet Ending: King Andrias is dead, finally freeing the girls from his wrath. The girls are reunited with their adoptive amphibian families and the olms prepare prosthetics to replace their lost body parts. However the girls have to make a choice of either staying in Amphibia or returning to earth, both of which have their own consequences. Then a mishap results in the girls and Parisia getting sent to earth without having a chance to say goodbye to their friends.
  • Bloodier and Gorier:
    • Compared to The Plantar Family Pet, Friends is far more gruesome and detailed in its violence.
    • Chapter 29 features a rather graphic and brutally detailed cannibalism scene.
  • Break the Cutie: While this happens to all three of the girls, Sasha is hit the hardest. After being forced into an agreement to be his test subject, King Andrias becomes hyper-focused on Sasha. He goes out of his way to deliberately target her. From forcing her to be the one to 'bear the pups' to screwing a muzzle into her skull to taking extra long to 'bathe' her, King Andrias goes to great lengths to utterly destroy Sasha's spirit.
  • Breeding Slave: King Andrias becomes creepily obsessed with forcing Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to reproduce. He intends on using their offspring either to build an army of superpowered beings under his command, or if that fails, as pets he can sell as he's fully aware there are amphibians who'd love to have a human as a pet.
  • Broken Tears: Anne, Sasha and Marcy have this in almost every chapter due to being abused and tortured both physically and mentally by King Andrias.
  • Cliffhanger: A number of chapters end in this manner.
    • Chapter 1 ends with Marcy losing consciousness as Sasha and Anne call out to her.
    • Chapter 7 ends with Marcy getting her back broken.
    • Chapter 16 ends with Anne losing her right arm.
    • Chapter 18 ends with the trio being subjected to pheromones.
    • Chapter 21 ends with Sasha waking up strapped to a chair as King Andrias begins a new experiment on her.
    • Chapter 28 ends with King Andrias forcing Sasha to choose between eating Marcy's left or right leg.
    • Chapter 48 ends with Sasha having a run-in with King Andrias.
    • Chapter 50 ends with Marcy challenging King Andrias to a rematch.
    • Chapter 51 ends with King Andrias dragging Sasha with him as he falls over the edge.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: This story is chock full of examples, many of them targeting Sasha specifically.
    • Sasha is experimented on in chapter 3 and loses her right eye in a brutally painful way.
    • King Andrias fakes a hysterectomy just for the fun of it, leaving Sasha with a pointlessly cruel gash.
    • King Andrias screws in a muzzle directly into Sasha's skull, purposely keeping her awake and aware for the procedure.
    • In Chapter 1, King Andrias controls Sasha and Anne and force them to beat Marcy into unconsciousness.
    • King Andrias isn't above suffocating any of the girls if he so pleases.
  • Covered with Scars: By the end of story, all three girls have scars on nearly everywhere on their bodies. Anne is covered with scars from being hunted. Marcy has burnt curled skin from electrocution. Sasha has injuries on nearly everywhere due to being tortured greatly by Andrias.
  • Creepy Good: The olms are big, scary, and have mouths lined with sharp teeth. They are also the ones who rescue Anne and her friends from King Andrias's clutches.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: King Andrias never stood a chance against Mother Olm.
  • Darker and Edgier: This fic delves deeper into disturbing content than The Plantar Family Pet dared to. The fact that a large portion of the fic is focused on King Andrias trying to force the girls to breed speaks volumes.
  • Dark Fic: Oh hell yes. This story is filled to the brim with disturbing and graphic content. From the girls being forced to screw each other through the use of pheromones to each of them being brutalized to various degrees to detailed scenes of gore, there's a good reason this fic ended up with the 'M' rating.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: Parisia doesn't take too well to the girls at first. She comes around after realizing she likes Sasha's spunk.
  • Determinator: Anne remains stubbornly hopeful during even the darkest points of the fic. Not even having her arm torn off by a bloodthirsty king was enough to coompletely squash her determination.
  • Ear Notch: Marcy's left ear is missing a piece due to King Andrias controls Anne's body and forces her to eat it.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The girls spend months as King Andrias's prisoners, enduring near daily physical and mental torture and abuse. They're forced to have sex to please King Andrias's sick desire for 'human pups'. They endure burns, cuts, have chunks of them ripped away, with little reprieve. Their one attempt to escape failed spectacularly, costing Marcy use of her legs. Sasha has a muzzle drilled into her skull and Anne is subjected to an experiment to allow King Andrias even better control over the three of them. Then the olms arrive and rescue the girls, bringing them to the relative safety of Proteus. When King Andrias chases them there, not only do the girls all get to stand up to him and fight back, but Mother Olm makes sure to give King Andrias a beating he'd never forget. Then after all they've been through, the girls are finally reunited with their loved ones.
  • Eaten Alive: While Sasha is under King Andrias's control, Marcy has her left leg partially eaten while fully awake and aware of it happening.
  • Electric Torture: The collars Anne, Sasha, and Marcy are forced to wear are capable of sending electricity through their bodies. King Andrias utilizes this feature more than once as one of his methods to keep the girls under his control.
  • Electronic Eyes: After losing her eye to King Andrias, the olms manufacture a new robotic eye for Sasha.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: King Andrias, just like in canon. Goes a step further at various points where he speaks in a more feral tone when sufficiently angered enough.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Sasha loses her right eye when King Andrias pours something on her face as part of an experiment. The liquid melts and distorts Sasha's eye so badly it needed to be removed.
    • Sasha later returns the favor by jabbing a sharp object straight into King Andrias's left eye.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Although not described in full detail, the nature of King Andrias's death by means of having his skull crushed open by an enraged Anne is still quite disturbing.
  • Faux Affably Evil: King Andrias has his moments of acting nice to the girls, but none of it is genuine and it barely masks the cruetly he subjects them to.
  • Fell Asleep Crying: A common occurrence throughout the story.
    • After Anne has her arm ripped off and eaten by King Andrias, Sasha and Marcy hold onto Anne as they do their best to stop the bleeding and also to keep her from hurting herself. Anne eventually runs out of energy and falls asleep in their arms.
    • When Sasha first gets the muzzle screwed into her, she crawls over to her friends until she's close enough for Anne to pull her into a hug. Sasha falls asleep as Anne and Marcy comfort her.
  • Fell Asleep Standing Up: After the cruel muzzle is removed, Sasha is so relieved to finally not be in pain anymore that she falls sleep while still on her feet.
  • First Kiss: Each of the girls kiss each other for the first time at different points in the early story.
  • Force Feeding: Using the control collar, King Andrias forces Sasha to eat Marcy's flesh.
  • Forced to Watch: King Andrias forces Marcy to watch a mind controlled Sasha eat her leg.
  • Foreshadowing: In chapter 23, Marcy tells Anne and Sasha a story about the olms and how they are at odds with King Andrias. The story is treated as a fairy tale even by King Andrias, but that doesn't stop the girls from hoping there was some truth to it. Come chapter 37, the olms arrive to rescue the girls.
    • After chapter 23, there's a few hints sprinkled at various points leading up to chapter 37 hinting at the olms coming to the girls' aid. It's made clear that there's unwanted movement towards the castle that King Andrias wants to stop. It isn't until chapter 37 when it's made clear that the movement had been the olms.
  • From Bad to Worse: Anne, Marcy, and Sasha are originally held prisoner by King Andrias as he wants to use them for his invasion plans. Already a scary situation for the girls to be in. Then King Andrias makes things worse by deciding he wants to breed the girls to create potential soldiers or future pets.
  • Gentle Giant: Mother Olm is huge, easily towering over even King Andrias. She's also exceedingly gentle and motherly to Anne, Marcy, and Sasha, treating them like they were her own children.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Parisia is still wary of outsiders and is initially reluctant to accept the trio to Proteus. Nonetheless, she is still firmly on their side.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Mother Olm may be very sweet, gentle, and motherly. But when it comes to dishing out justice, she's absolutely merciless. King Andrias finds this out the hard way.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even with an arm short, Anne's still protective of her friends, especially when she was in her Calamity form to save Sasha from Andrias.
  • Help Mistaken for Attack: Given what's happened to them, it's understandable that Anne, Sasha, and Marcy would think Lysil and Angwin were trying to attack them. It doesn't help that the olm twins are large and possess toothy jaws like King Andrias.
  • Humans Through Alien Eyes: How else would you explain why King Andrias honest-to-god thought he could get a 'litter of pups' from three female human teenagers?
  • I Can't Feel My Legs!: After returning from isolation with a broken back, Marcy yelled this trope in her sleep.
  • Idiot Ball: Despite being otherwise competent and terrifying, King Andrias is somehow convinced that trying to breed three females is going to result in offspring. Somewhat justified as he isn't all that knowledgeable on humans.
  • I'm a Humanitarian:
    • King Andrias forces Sasha to devour one of Marcy's legs in chapter 29.
    • Andrias then controls Anne's body to force her to bite off Sasha's arm flesh and rip off part of Marcy’s left ear.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Lysil and Angwin save Marcy by plunging a spear right through King Andrias's chest. Given King Andrias's cyborg status, this doesn't kill him, but it gives enough time for the olms to get the girls to safety.
  • I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: In multiple occasions, King Andrias tortures one of the girls to force others to follow his order when they let him down in the slightest way.
  • Jawbreaker:
    • In chapter 25, King Andrias dislocates Sasha's jaw with the muzzle and orders Marcy to fix it.
    • Later in chapter 37, King Andrias forces the girls into submission by squeezing Sasha's already damaged jaw to the point of breaking the abscesses.
    • Chapter 38 has King Andrias punishes Sasha by tightening the muzzle to the point of breaking her jaw.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • There's no reason for King Andrias to drill a muzzle into Sasha's jaw and no reason for him to force her to be awake for it. He just does it because he can.
    • After taking away Marcy's ability to walk, King Andrias could have just put her back with her friends. Instead he chooses to mentally torture her by placing her in a sensory deprivation tank.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The story is littered with brutality, but the turning point has to be in chapter 22 when King Andrias drills a muzzle straight into Sasha's skull while she's awake and screaming.
  • Lack of Empathy: King Andrias shows no remorse or concern over his actions against the girls. He has no qualms about brutalizing them to make a point. He forces them to hurt each other, breaks their bones, electrocutes them, and commits all kinds of cruelty to them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • After spending little over two months torturing Anne, Marcy, and Sasha, King Andrias finally gets his comeuppance when the olms come to rescue the girls. Lysil and Angwin manage to incapacitate him by shoving a spear through his body. Later, Mother Olm thrashes him about when she finds him terrorizing Sasha.
    • The girls all get their chance to get back at King Andrias. Sasha fights him off to save an olm child and later stabs out one of his eyes. Marcy gets a rematch and manages to hold her own against him. Anne delivers the finishing blow, cracking his skull open in revenge for what he did to Sasha.
  • Light Is Not Good: King Andrias is light blue in color with a white beard. But his heart is darker than black and he has no issues being excessively cruel to a trio of teenagers just to get what he wants.
  • Mama Bear:
    • When Mother Olm sees what King Andrias is doing to Sasha, she doesn't hesitate to snatch him in her jaws and shake him like a rag doll.
    • When Mother Olm heard about rumors about three young creatures being held prisoner by King Andrias, her first instinct is to send troops to infiltrate the castle and rescue them.
    • When King Andrias threatens to kill an olm child, Sasha forgets her own fears and goes ballistic against King Andrias using her powers.
  • Man Bites Man: In chapter 16, Anne bites King Andrias in retaliation for him threatening Sasha.
  • Manipulative Bastard: King Andrias is very good at forcing the girls to agree to anything he wants. When making any 'deal' with the girls, he will constantly move the goal posts and up the stakes until the girls give into his demands.
  • Massage of Love:
    • Sasha gives Marcy a back massage to help calm her down. She later gives a massage to Anne to help ease the soreness around her hips.
    • Marcy gives Sasha a well deserved one to soothe the blonde's aching jaws and face.
  • Mind Control: The control collars allow King Andrias to force the girls to comply with whatever he wants. He uses this to force Anne and Sasha to torture Marcy and later uses it to force Sasha to eat Marcy's leg.
  • Mood Whiplash: Chapter 21 starts off cute with Sasha receiving a much deserved massage. Then the whole mood distorts into something terrifying when Sasha suddenly wakes up strapped to a seat and King Andrias is about to perform impromptu dental surgery to shove a tooth into her gums.
  • Mutilation Conga: Not one of the girls come out unscathed.
    • Marcy loses use of her legs. Then later she loses half of her left leg to a mind-controlled Sasha and an insane King Andrias. She also loses part of left ear when Andrias controls Anne's body and forces her to eat it.
    • Anne has her right arm ripped off and eaten by King Andrias as punishment for standing up to him.
    • Sasha starts off losing an eye and chunks of limb muscle in King Andrias's cruel experiment. Then she has a muzzle bolted painfully to her jaws and a sharp tooth wedged into her gums. Her jaw is forcibly dislocated and later broken by an enraged King Andrias.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Both times when the girls wake up after being influenced by pheromones, they're rightfully horrified by what they were forced to do to each other.
    • Anne and Sasha are both in great distress when they realize they were forced to torture Marcy.
    • Sasha is disgusted with herself upon realizing she was forced to eat one of Marcy's legs.
  • Nasal Trauma: King Andrias gets hit in the nose more than once throughout the fic.
  • Not So Above It All: A comment from Mother Olm reveals that Parisia had climbed on top of a building to present the three girls to a crowd of onlookers, mirroring a scene from a well known popular movie.
  • Oh, Crap!: King Andrias's reaction when he sees an enraged Mother Olm, many times bigger than he is, barreling towards him.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: In chapter 24, King Andrias in his infinite wisdom about human diets decided it was a great idea to make Sasha eat the regurgitated food from a heron, which Sasha is understandably freaked out about. In the following chapter, Anne and Marcy listen as the two have a screaming match about what happened. Until more context is given, the poor girls are led to believe Sasha was forced to do something very unchild-friendly with King Andrias.
  • People Puppets: Chapter 34 has King Andrias controlling Anne's body while her mind is fully aware of what is happening. The experience is terrifying for both her and her friends.
  • Pheromones: How King Andrias forces Anne and her friends to screw each other. The pheromones mess with the girls' minds and revert them temporarily to a more animal-like state. The girls remember little of what happened afterwards. This just terrifies them more.
  • Playing with Syringes: In one chapter, King Andrias shoves an unusually thick needle into Sasha and injects her with an unknown fluid in hopes of forcing her to bear more 'pups'.
  • Polyamory: Anne, Sasha, and Marcy end up in this kind of relationship during the course of the fic.
  • Rape as Drama: The part where King Andrias forces the girls to have sex using pheromones plays a significant part in the story.
  • Rape by Proxy: Andrias uses pheromones to make Anne, Sasha and Marcy have Three-Way Sex unconsciously against their will.
  • Recursive Fanfiction: For The Plantar Family Pet.
  • The Reveal: A couple of chapters prior to chapter 37, hints are dropped that someone or something is approaching the castle. King Andrias orders his guards to handle it offscreen, but it's made clear that whatever or whoever is approaching aren't giving up. And then comes chapter 37 where it's revealed that the olms have been planning a rescue mission to save Anne and her friends.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: An army of olms bursts through King Andrias's castle to find and rescue Anne and her friends. When the girls try to escape through the chaos, they find both organic and robot bodies laying strewn apart as a result of the olms' carnage.
  • Sadistic Choice: King Andrias is fond of forcing these on the trio.
    • In chapter 3, he forces Sasha to choose between becoming his guinea pig or letting a worse fate befall Marcy.
    • In chapter 17, King Andrias tells Marcy she can either breed with Anne or let Anne go without extra help, Marcy herself would lose her back brace, and Sasha would lose her other eye.
  • Sapient Pet: What King Andrias hopes to turn the girls into if they don't work out as weapons of war.
  • A Scar to Remember: Once Andrias captures Sasha again, he brands her back with a large "A". He even mocks that scars give her strength, angering Anne in the process.
  • Sequel Hook: The final chapter ends with Anne, Marcy and Sasha waking up in the park where they were originally transported to Amphibia with an unconscious Parisia nearby.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Twice in the fic, the girls are forced to have sex. Both times, the scene cuts away and the actual act is never shown or described in detail. The aftermath offers enough to give the reader the idea of what happened.
  • Sickening "Crunch!":
    • When King Andrias strikes Marcy's back with his tail, he breaks her spine, resulting in this sound.
    • King Andrias has the muzzle squeeze Sasha's jaws so tightly they break.
  • Sinister Suffocation: One of the first acts King Andrias does to punish Marcy at the beginning of the story is pressing her face so hard into the ground she can't take in a breath.
  • Slashed Throat: In the climax when fighting the olms, King Andrias has his throat slit. He laughs it off and taunts them that they 'didn't cut deep enough'.
  • Slave Brand: Upon recapturing Sasha, King Andrias carves a large "A" on her back to indicate she's his pet.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Averted with the olms. Though serpentine in appearance, they are exceedingly gentle with the girls.
  • The Speechless: Just like in The Plantar Family Pet, Anne is unable to speak and instead communicates with animal-like sounds.
  • Terms of Endangerment:
    • King Andrias has a penchant for using nicknames when referring to the girls.
    • Unlike when he addresses the other girls, King Andrias never once calls Sasha by her real name. He instead mostly refers to her as 'sunshine'.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Anne is horrified when she realizes she killed King Andrias in a fit of rage.
  • Three-Way Sex: Anne, Sasha, and Marcy are forced to do this twice in the fic. They are left horrified afterwards both times.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Unlike in canon, Lysil and Angwin never lost their jobs as guards and are shown to be more competent and skilled in a fight, even if they do still argue.
    • The olms in general. Not that they were weak in the show, but here they're shown to be able to stand up to King Andrias and his frobots with relative ease.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While she still retains her suspicions of outsiders, Parisia in this story is nowhere near as difficult or bitter as the one from canon. Parisia becomes especially friendly after a little bonding moment with Sasha.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After being defeated by olms twice, ripped apart by Mother Olm, and having the girls stand up to him, King Andrias is not the most stable when Anne finds him. He's so delirious at this point that he starts to ramble to Anne about the things he's going to do with Sasha. There isn't a trace of the scheming conniving king left.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's impossible to talk about Mother Olm or any of the other olms without spoiling how the girls get rescued.
  • What If?:
    • This fic explores a Plantar Family Pet timeline where instead of just focusing on using Marcy, King Andrias is interested in making use of all three of them. The results aren't pretty.
    • According to Word of God, Marcy never ran out of the house that resulted in Anne having to chase after her which then resulted in them being hunted down. This meant they never met Ivy, the townsfolk never warm up to the girls, and the hunters are never driven away. This opened the girls up to being rounded up together and taken to the king far earlier than in The Plantar Family Pet.
  • Wild Child: Just like in The Plantar Family Pet, Anne exhibits very animal-like and feral behavior, especially of the feline variety.
  • Would Hurt a Child: King Andrias could care less that Anne, Marcy, and Sasha are barely teenagers. That doesn't stop him from subjecting the poor girls to months of torture to force them to be obedient to him.
