Geralt of Rivia

A Witcher from the land of Rivia, Geralt has lived for over 90 years of struggle and pain. Doing good even when the people around him didn't appreciate it. However, on coming to a world quite different from his own, he's about to discover that he's as much a man of destiny and good as his adopted daughter may be.
  • Adaptational Heroism: While he might deny it, Geralt here takes after the most heroic paths of The Witcher games, with a dedication to children, truth, and taking no easy ways out.
  • Combat Pragmatism: Outside of duels, Geralt doesn't hesitate to use his Signs, bombs and other unorthodox weapons in serious fights.
  • The Confidant: Becomes this for Ned Stark during their time in the Red Keep, being one of the few people the new Hand of the King can trust completely in a den of liars and deceit.
  • The Dreaded: Quickly gains this reputation after defeating The Mountain and Jaime Lannister in combat, both of whom are considered to be among the best warriors in Westeros.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Having jumped from the events of The Witcher series to the opening act of Game of Thrones, Geralt has lived a long life of trouble, growth and experience. So while he may enter Westeros with nothing but his own experience, he knows how to navigate things pretty quickly.
  • The Hero: Unavoidably becomes this to many throughout Westeros after crippling The Mountain, outwitting the Lannisters and being essential in forming an alliance between Robb Stark and Stannis Baratheon. Plus, he was the ONLY POV for much of book 1, making him if not the lead for one storyline, at least The Heavy.
  • The Leader: Takes command of the rescue party for Eddard and Sansa Stark. Later he commands a legion of over a hundred men called the Winter Wolves.
  • Master Swordsman: Was already considering this back in the Continent, which he asserts through his victories against skilled knights such as Jaime.
  • The Mentor: To all of the Stark children. Teaching them how to fight along with giving them advice.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Compared to others in his world, Geralt is very basic when it comes to magic. However, in a world starved of magic, Geralt's magical use makes him near unmatched even when his Signs were weakened at the time.
  • Older Than They Look: pushing 90, but doesn't look a day over 40.
  • Red Baron: Geralt has earned a couple new ones: "The Mountain Breaker", for defeating Gregor Clegane in combat, "The Lion Tamer" for besting Jamie Lannister and for outmaneuvering the Lannisters in the capital, and "The Rebel Knight" for being a good man fighting against some established powers. And then the North proclaims him "The Blade of Winter" for his services as a Stark Champion. People joke that when the history books are made, there will be a page full of his titles.
  • World's Best Warrior: Is seen as this after beating Thoros, The Mountain and Jaime Lannister one after another during the Tournament of the Hand. Many have even gone as far as to compare his skills to the late Arthur Dayne, who was considered to be the best swordsman in Westeros.

Cirella

The heir to a victorious empire who just conquered the northern kingdoms, "Ciri" had one last task to complete before claiming her birthright: destroy the White Frost. Unfortunately this didn't work out perfectly. Now trapped thousands of miles from her objective, this young imperial has a new destiny to guide another young woman to a greater destiny too.
  • The Confidant: Becomes a major player for emotional support to Daenerys including giving her advice and reigning her in whenever her worst qualities come to play.
  • Cool Big Sis: Acts as one to Daenerys. The "sister" part comes into play when she's masquerading as Dany's bastard half-sibling.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Coming off The Witcher 3, Ciri now has a lifetime of suffering and strength to draw upon in a new world.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Ciri has a lifetime of prophecy and destiny hanging over her head. And as she muses, looking at her deepest desires in the house of the undying, she'd like nothing more than to follow in her "dad's" footsteps and become a normal witcher. But, for a chance to do a lot of good and to ensure the protection of the world, she continues to take up the mantle no matter the emotional cost to her.
  • The Mentor: While Ciri was usually the one learning, she ends up taking on this role to Daenerys Targaryen.
  • Morality Chain: Ciri isn't afraid to knock Dany down a peg in her trains of thought. Addressing her fear, her entitlement and her anger in various ways. Not just standing alongside her, but pulling her back when she sees her about to go too far.
  • My Greatest Failure: While she doesn't like others fighting for her sake, her personal grief is that she didn't manage to save the Rats from someone who was after her. Her failure to stop the White Frost when she first entered also drives her to work alongside Dany to build a new army to confront it again in due time.
  • Ship Tease: With Jorah.

The Crones

  • Adaptational Badass: From controlling Velden, a relatively small and out of the way place, to becoming The Man Behind the Man in The Riverlands.
  • Adaptational Villainy: While what they do in the game is nothing good, in this story they up their game with ideas to rule Planetos and defeat the White frost after tasting Ciri's flesh.
  • Arc Villain: While slow building, they become Geralt's primary anagonists starting in book 3, and the main reason why he gets stuck before helping Stannis at King's Landing.
  • Deal with the Devil: Their terms for helping the lords typically involve betrayal of others around them. Whether longtime friends or even family. How willing others are to take this depends on who the lord is.

    Game of Thrones Characters
For established tropes for related characters, see A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya Stark

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Since Arya escapes with her family and with someone like Geralt, he shakes her out of her Revenge plotline, and places her on a more heroic path.

Brienne of Tarth

Sansa Stark

  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: While Sansa still has to watch her father die, since she escaped King's Landing in this story, she's overall much happier with the hope to help her family in her own way.

Thoros of Myr

A wandering priest from Essos, Thoros was originally a lapsed man who just stuck around for the fun of being at King Robert's court. However, the signs of his red god ended up pointing him towards Geralt. And what followed from that would be an experience which would change his life forever.
  • The Alcoholic: While his faith to R'hllor remains strong, Thoros still keeps a habit on enjoying a hard drink. He does moderate more after joining the ranks of the Winter Wolves.
  • Badass Normal: Even though he can call on the flame magic of the Lord of Light, his sword fighting skills and combative strength allowed him to fight evenly against Geralt for a short while during the Tournament of the Hand.
  • Badass Preacher: A warrior priest from the east, who might be the first normal priest of the old gods if he survives to the end.
  • Character Development: Being around Geralt raised his tolerance, as he began to see how a good man leads even when not of the faith. This would lay fertile ground for a religious dialog with a shaman of the old gods which would change his life.
  • Combat Pragmatism: Has no issue fighting dirty or employing flame magic with his sword.
  • The Lancer: To Geralt. While Geralt has his own concerns about being put into places of leadership now, Thoros is his strongest supporter, and a dedicated man to help with tricky matters like dealing with the raid from Euron.
  • The Rival: Nominally, he and Melisandre are followers of the same faith. However, Thoros for his part mistrusts Mel's intentions as she's risen so high in status that he wonders if her prophecies and advice are for R'hllor's glory or her own.
