Generation 1: The Social Experiments
Introduced in The Spirit of The Cabin
Ranboo ("The Hero")
Played by: Ranboo
The main character. He wakes up in a cabin and things only get stranger from there.
- All for Nothing: Despite all his efforts to escape Showfall Media, he doesn't make it out and is killed. Even worse, Word of God confirms that if he did make it out, he wouldn't be able to remember his loved ones from his past life, and the only way be could be truly "free" is to go back to Showfall Media.
- Blood from the Mouth: In "The Choice", a part of Ranboo's mask is chipped away to show the left side of his mouth covered in blood.
- Butt-Monkey: Played for Laughs, at first. He's terrorized by a slime demon, electrocuted, and forced to cut someone open to get a key. The Choice pretty much puts him through the wringer, and not in a funny way.
- Cool Mask: He wears a mask that hides the truth of what's happening.
- Crucified Hero Shot: The final shot of The Social Experiments is his lifeless body positioned this way.
- Despair Event Horizon: Upon realizing that he'll be forced to be a puppet for Showfall Media if he lives, he screams to let the audience kill him.
- Dull Surprise: He doesn't seem phased by anything horrific happening in front of him. The closest he ever gets to expressing his fear is a nonchalant "Wow, that was pretty scary." When his brainwashing is undone, he shakily asks under his breath "Did I kill all of those...?", implying he was aware of what was happening but was unable to control himself.
- The Hero: He's called such by promotional material and Showfall Media.
- The Hero Dies: He is killed when Hetch gives the audience a choice of whether to kill him or make him a permanent cast member. The audience chooses to kill him.
- Heroic BSoD: Upon learning that everyone is most likely dead and he did nothing but sit by and watch (or in Ethan's case, lure him directly into a trap), he blames himself for not doing anything to save them, despite being under Showfall Media's control.
- Leitmotif: "The Hero".
- Nervous Wreck: When the mask turns off, his true personality is shown: someone who is understandably terrified of their situation and wants to find a way out. He almost always sounds on edge and is on the verge of a breakdown.
- Nice Guy: He appears to be a docile guy who just happens to be put in odd situations. When he regains control, he goes back for Charlie so he can escape with him. Unfortunately, this is one of the key causes for the prevention of his survival.
- Red Is Heroic: He wears a red varsity jacket, and is the protagonist of the show.
- Tranquil Fury: Upon learning from Hetch that all his memories were fabricated by Showfall Media to use him for the show, he calmly walks away with a cold look on his face. When a member of Showfall Media tries to grab him, he takes out a knife he got earlier and stabs them. All without saying a single word.
- Yank the Dog's Chain: Every glimmer of hope he has of escaping the show is destroyed from in The Choice. Shutting down the mall with Hetch? His paranoia of relying on the audience gets the better of him and he puts in the wrong code, compromising Hetch's position and seemingly getting him killed. The exit that was open before he saved Charlie? It gets chained up by the employees just as they're approaching it. Reaching every exit in the mall? Many employees are waiting for them to arrive so they can be recaptured. Finally shutting down the show and leaving? Hetch is revealed to still be alive and part of Showfall Media before he kills Ranboo.
Charlie/Slimecicle ("The Villain")
Played by: Charlie "Slimecicle"
- Big Bad: Of the first episode, The Spirit of The Cabin.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: He dies at least three times:
- In The Spirit of The Cabin, Ranboo dries him up and absorbs his remains in a rag.
- In The Mastermind of The Warehouse, he's revealed to still be alive in the rag but tells Ranboo to throw him at the laser box to help him out. He ends up screaming in agony as he burns to death before an anvil drops on him.
- In The Choice, he seemingly dies for good as the Security mauls him to death at the Cabin Set.
- Incoming Ham: "Boo, bitch! I see you've found my cabin!"
- Leitmotif: "Spirit of the Slime".
- Our Demons Are Different: As the Spirit of The Cabin, he forces Ranboo to make him food and terrorizes him and Sneeg.
- Please Subscribe to Our Channel: Acts like a Twitch streamer who only cares about numbers in the 3rd episode of a fake livestream he did.
- Strapped to an Operating Table: In the second episode, he's paralyzed in this position so Ranboo can cut him open to find a key. His guts are slime, but it's implied that it’s actually blood.
Sneeg ("The Taken")
Played by: Sneegsnag (credited as Brendan Thro)
- Cruel and Unusual Death:
- In The Spirit of The Cabin, he's mauled by the Create-A-Creature the audience made beforehand.
- In The Mastermind of The Warehouse, he's crushed to death with Austin in the Hole In The Wall game.
- In The Choice, if you look very closely, his dead body is seen next to the exit and the Security.
- Deadpan Snarker: Despite being at their mercy, he's very witty and wry towards everyone, including the Spirit and the Puzzler.
- Face–Heel Turn: Briefly goes through one when he gets slime poured on him by the Spirit.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Frank.
- Leitmotif: "A New Victim", and "A New Villain" for his fight with Ranboo.
- Oh, Crap!: When the Puzzler puts the hat Sneeg wore in the first episode on his head again, the screen glitches as Sneeg quietly looks on in horror at something the audience can't see.
- Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: He tries to do this in The Mastermind of The Warehouse by excusing himself to use the bathroom. He doesn't get very far before his brainwashing is activated again.
Frank
Sneeg's friend, whom he carries around.
- Dead All Along: Episode 3 shows a paper in the office that confirms the skeleton Sneeg carried around Was Once a Man who died long before the events of the show.
- Friendly Skeleton: By virtue of being a fake skeleton and not alive.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Sneeg.
Hetch ("The Savior")
Played by: Keenan "Criken" Mosimann
- In the Hood: He wears a red hoodie, alluding to his mysterious nature.
- Hollywood Hacking: His hacking skills are impressive enough to put a whole mall on standby to help out Ranboo.
- Leitmotif: "Hetch".
- Malevolent Masked Man: He initially appears to be helping Ranboo, but reveals himself to be working with Showfall Media.
Introduced in The Mastermind of The Warehouse
The Puzzler
Played by: Jerma
- Big Bad: Of the second episode, The Mastermind of The Warehouse.
- Celebrity Resemblance: An unusual example in that he claims to look like someone famous, specifically stating that "I think I look like Gigachad" (referencing Russian male supermodel Ernest Khalimov, who became the subject of online memes thanks to his exaggeratedly chiseled facial features and muscles).
- Evil Old Folks: He appears to be an old person and is evil.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: After spending all of his time terrorizing the players with the button to detonate the bombs on their necks, he accidentally drops a button that ends up blowing up the same room he's in.
- Leitmotif: "The Puzzler".
- No Body Left Behind: His body is nowhere to be seen after his death, but his clothes are on the floor.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: He's only known as The Puzzler.
- Thin Chin of Sin: He sports a large, pointy chin that, together with his Villainous Cheekbones and large, crooked nose, highlights his malevolent nature.
- Villainous Cheekbones: The Puzzler sports tall, exaggerated cheekbones that highlight his evilness alongside his Thin Chin of Sin and large, crooked nose.
Ethan ("Unemployed")
Played by: Ethan Nestor
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Gets crushed by a rotating statue in the room with the clothes. Episode 3 implies he was attacked by the Security.
- Mauve Shirt: Literally. He wears a purple shirt and lives long enough to who his Hidden Depths in cross-dressing before he dies.
Austin ("Gay")
Played by: AustinShow
- Blatant Lies: He says he has a wife and kids even though his introduction says he's gay.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Gets crushed to death with Sneeg in the Hole In The Wall game.
- No-Respect Guy: Whether it's The Puzzler or the other players, no one seems to give him any respect or care about his excuse for his (admittedly fake) wife and children.
- Only Sane Man: For all his lies about having many wives and children, he's more sensible compared to the others. He calls The Puzzler "sick" when he toys with Frank, and he's the only one who understandably freaks out when Ethan is killed in front of them.
Niki ("Nice")
Played by: Nihachu
- Boom, Headshot!: Gets shot by The Puzzler while looking for Mousetrap pieces.
- Broken Tears: Cries before her introduction.
- Lady in Red: Subverted. She wears a red suit and hat but is a friendly girl.
- Nice Girl: Her introduction says that she's nice.
Vinny ("Hoarder")
Played by: Vinny Vinesauce
- Anvil on Head: How he dies after being thrown through lasers by Ranboo and Sneeg.
- Noodle Incident: He has apparently been thrown through lasers before being in the Laser Room.
- Plucky Comic Relief: He provides a lot of comedic moments, from his excuse to live in the carousel game to his death.
Others
Squiggles
Played by: Keenan "Criken" Mosimann
- Dissonant Serenity: When Squiggles appears again in the third episode, they happily encourage the viewers to make their vote on whether Ranboo should continue living or not. All while Ranboo is having a severe Heroic BSoD in the middle of all this.
- Mascot: For Showfall Media.
- Shoo Out the Clowns: Goes away for the majority of the third episode.
Ghoulio and Ghoulia
Played by: N/A
Two ghouls who work for Slimecicle.
- One-Shot Character: They only appear in The Spirit of The Cabin.
- Troll: Ghoulia scares Ranboo by bang two pots in their face as they try to search for ingredients to cook, and they (alongside Slimecicle) torment Ranboo with nightmares as he sleeps.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: They disappear from the show after The Spirit of The Cabin with no explanation of where they went.
Rats
Played by: Sykkuno and Valkyrae
Two rats who work for The Puzzler.
- Ham and Deadpan Duo: The female rat is the more trickster and playful Ham while the male rat is more stoic and quiet Deadpan.
- No Name Given: They're merely referred to as "Rats" by The Puzzler.
- One-Shot Character: They only appear in The Mastermind of The Warehouse.
- Psychopathic Manchild: Well, womanchild, but the female rat is more chipper and upbeat about tormenting the players in The Puzzlers' games.
- Troll: The female rat likes to joke around and toy with the players, especially Austin.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Quite literally, as they disappear from the show after the Closet Game and The Puzzler's death with no explanation of where they went.
Showfall Media
- Big Bad: Of the entire show, courtesy of being associated with The Founder.
- Evil, Inc.: They're a large company who kidnaps people (implied to be from another world) and brainwashes them to be part of their shows for entertaining their audiences.
- Malevolent Masked Man: All the employees who work under Showfall Media wear a white mask with the logo on them. Whenever they appear, they're always trying to get Ranboo and the others so they can brainwash and recapture them.
- MegaCorp: Implied to be one, considering they managed to buy out a whole mall to film their shows in.
