Mother Gothel

"Oh, great. Now I'm the bad guy."

An old woman who was, prior to the film, the only person who knew of the magic flower that could reverse her aging. When the flower is taken from her and ingested by the queen, Gothel instead kidnaps the queen's daughter, who has the essence of the flower, and raises her as her own. Eighteen years later, Gothel is content with keeping Rapunzel as her personal Fountain of Youth, which is forced to change once Rapunzel decides she wants to see the outside world.

• Abusive Parents: She is of the emotionally abusive variety: she doesn't beat up Rapunzel but preys on her emotions, isolates her from everyone else in the tower, gaslights her into believing that she's stupid and incapable of doing anything without Gothel's guidance, etc. The Series reveals that she also treated her biological daughter, Cassandra, as a glorified maid and then, tossed her away in favor of Rapunzel's youth-restoring hair.
  Mother Gothel: [regarding Cassandra] Ugh, hopefully that'll keep her out of my hair for a while. Lousy little pest.
• Action Mom: Well, one bad adoptive action mom. She whacks the Stabbington Brothers (whom she herself set on Rapunzel to reinforce her fear of the outside world) and fatally stabs Eugene with a dagger. She protects Rapunzel from things that could take Rapunzel away from her. The Series reveals she had her own biological daughter, Cassandra.
• Adaptational Badass: Played straight in the sense of getting her hands dirty, unlike the witch in the original Rapunzel fairytale; inverted in the sense of not being a witch.
• All Take and No Give: Both the Taker and the Giver manifestations at once. She lives to take care of Rapunzel, but only to use her to stay young, and keeps her locked up.
• Alto Villainess: She's the villain and has Donna Murphy's comparatively deep voice, which stands out against Mandy Moore/Rapunzel's much higher voice.
• Ambiguously Jewish: Implied to be this, given her Quirky Curls and black hair. Gothel also perpetuates the nagging and overprotective Jewish Mother/wife stereotype.
• Ax-Crazy: Gothel is a sociopathic narcissist obsessed with feeling young and beautiful and kidnaps a baby to raise her own child just so Gothel can use her hair for her own benefits and she even stabs Eugene to death after he attempts to rescue her and has Rapunzel locked up because Rapunzel wanted to escape from her abuse.
• Beauty Is Bad: Beauty is the cause of her villainy. She kidnaps Rapunzel, keeps her in the tower, and emotionally abuses her to keep her Fountain of Youth to herself and stay forever young and beautiful.
• Beneath the Mask: Gothel appears to be a loving, though overprotective, mother towards Rapunzel. Even though a keen eye notices she's selfish, condescending, and downright emotionally abusive, it's only in the end, when Rapunzel discovers Gothel kidnapped her as an infant, that Gothel's true nature comes out: she cares only for Rapunzel's hair and not the girl herself and is willing to do absolutely anything to keep Rapunzel's power all to herself, even outright murder.
• Big Bad: She kidnapped Rapunzel when she was a baby, and is the main source of conflict in the film.
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pretends to be Rapunzel's loving mother, but in actuality, she's the woman who kidnapped Rapunzel as a baby because her hair was full of magic from the flower used to de-age Gothel that got crushed into medicine for Rapunzel's real mother, the queen.
• Black Cloak: She wears one a lot of the time to cover up her face, especially when the age-defying effects of the spell start wearing off.
• Broken Pedestal: She's become this to her adopted daughter Rapunzel and, in the Series, her actual daughter Cassandra, once they see her true colors as a vain and self-absorbed narcissist who only treated them as tools.
• Cleavage Window: Her dress is very low-cut, and gives us a good look at her chest.
• Combat Pragmatist: She stabs Flynn In the Back after he climbs into Rapunzel's tower at the climax of the movie, using Rapunzel herself as bait to let his guard down.
• Compassionate Critic: Towards Rapunzel (whom she views as gullible, naive, and helpless); or at least, she wants Rapunzel to think she's compassionate, but she's really faking love and affection towards her.
• Control Freak: This counts as both her Berserk Button and Fatal Flaw — everything has to go exactly her way, or she flips out.
• Cruel and Unusual Death: When she goes out, she goes out badly; she is aged to dust in what is implied to be an excruciatingly painful demise, and all that's left of her is her cloak and a pile of dust.
• Cruel to Be Kind: One of her favored justifications of her Control Freak behavior. Too bad it’s all a bunch of malarkey.
• Dark Is Evil: Gothel has raven-black hair and a penchant for darker clothing (including a black cape and hood), in contrast to Rapunzel's more bright and innocent colour scheme. In "Mother Knows Best", she shuts all the windows and then keeps on quenching the candles Rapunzel lights.
• Deadpan Snarker: She has a witty sense of humor.
• Death by Adaptation: In the original, the witch is stuck in the tower she imprisoned Rapunzel in; she cannot get out after she cut off Rapunzel's hair and cut the rest just to attempt to spite and kill Rapunzel's love, but she still lives (though it won't be a happy life being imprisoned there with no way out). Mother Gothel is struck with Rapid Aging and falls to her death, but completely turns to dust before she even hits the ground.
• Death by Irony: She was ironically the one using Rapunzel for her power when she made her believe the whole world could (the audience had known this since the prologue), thus she meets her ultimate fate when Eugene cuts Rapunzel's hair, turning her back to her true old age until she's Reduced to Dust.
• Evil All Along: Rapunzel eventually discovers that Mother Gothel kidnapped her and exploited her, only caring for her selfish desires; the audience knows it the whole time.
• Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor:
  Gothel: [looking in the mirror with Rapunzel] Look in that mirror. I see a strong, confident, beautiful young lady. Oh look, you're here too. [laughs]
• Evil Is Hammy: Subverted. Gothel definitely counts as a ham in the beginning when she pretends to be a loving mother to Rapunzel, but later in the film when she decides to become "the bad guy", she's basically all evil and no ham.
• Evil Matriarch: Mother Gothel is the Big Bad of the movie and is the woman who kidnapped, raised, and abused The Hero, Rapunzel. She's not Rapunzel's biological mother though.
• Evil Plan: Keep Rapunzel locked up in the tower forever so she can stay young forever.
• Expy:
  • Mother Gothel looks very similar to the way Bernadette Peters portrayed the character in Into the Woods. They even have the exact same motive for locking Rapunzel in the tower (protection from the outside world, albeit sincere in the latter's case). There's also the young and old forms both take, the arrogant insistence of being right, and the awesome singing voices.
  • Her eternal youth shtick might also be something of a surviving trait of the original concept of Yzma. Further evidence of this one comes from the fact that The Emperor's New Groove started life as a much more standard Disney flick under the working title Kingdom of the Sun. Note the motif of the kingdom in Tangled. The key difference here is that Proto-Yzma believed that the sun itself was what robbed her of her youth and beauty, while Mother Gothel actually gains hers from the essence of sunlight.
  • Her over-protectiveness and passive-aggressive emotional manipulation also call to mind Frollo from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The song "Mother Knows Best" and Frollo's part of "Out There" are, lyrically, uncannily similar.
• Fantasy-Forbidding Mother: Mother Gothel kept Rapunzel's desire to leave the tower she was living/prisoner in in check for most of her life by a combination of belittling her and telling terrifying tales of the outside. In this variation, however, Gothel has no interest in protecting Rapunzel's feelings or well-being, and keeping her in the tower is directly related to Gothel's own gain.
• Faux Affably Evil: As motherly, kind, and compromising as she tries to act, the mask is prone to slipping.
  Mother Gothel: YOU. ARE NOT. LEAVING THIS TOWER. EVER!

  Rapunzel calls her out on it towards the end, at which point Gothel drops the act entirely and decides to be "the bad guy."

• Greater-Scope Villain: A slow burn but in the series, despite long being dead, her actions hang a very heavy cloud over the characters that still affect them. Rapunzel's father is still reeling from Gothel kidnapping her, Rapunzel still has nightmares concerning her since she lived with her for a good chunk of her life. Not to mention still trying to adjust from her parentage. And Cassandra still has some major mother issues with her as well, considering she never loved her, her real daughter, either, and abandoned her for her own self interest. It takes a while for Cassandra to realize this, prompting her into her own stint into villainy from self-denial until she's shown undeniable proof that Gothel was a horrible mother.
• Hartman Hips: She's got huge hips when she's young.
• Hollywood Costuming: Deliberately done, where Mother Gothel's wardrobe is clearly several centuries out of date compared to everyone else's clothing, hinting that she's been around much longer than she appears.
• Hypocrite: She lectures Rapunzel about the dangerous, selfish, evil people of the outside world... when she's the one who kidnapped Rapunzel as a baby for her own selfish reasons. Rapunzel is quick to point this out when she discovers the truth.
• I Just Want to Be Beautiful: Mother Gothel wants to remain young and beautiful forever by any means necessary.
• Immortal Immaturity: Mother Gothel acts immature for how old she looks, let alone her actual age. She cows Rapunzel with what amounts to name-calling.
• Immortality Immorality: Gothel has lived so long in her youthful form that if she stops, death will be almost instantaneous. Hence her mania at the prospect of Rapunzel leaving her, and (when the chips are down) the claws coming out when Flynn gets in her way.
• Immortals Fear Death: Wants to use Rapunzel's hair to stay young forever at all costs, to the point she lies about the world to keep Rapunzel locked up and all to herself.
• It's All About Me: She will kidnap a baby girl, keep her in the tower, emotionally abuse her, chain her, and outright murder a man who tries to free her, all to stay forever young and beautiful. Zhan Tiri (who's probably the only character in the franchise that's eviler than she) points out that Gothel was felled by her ego.
• I Was Quite a Looker: As an old woman, she can hardly be called attractive or beautiful. That is her motivation to use the healing flower and, later, abuse Rapunzel.
• Jerkass: Mother Gothel is an exemplary one to Rapunzel from beginning to end, and makes little attempt to hide it, since Rapunzel won't know any better. She emotionally abuses her and undermines her confidence when she says that Rapunzel is incapable of taking care of herself outdoors and isn't pretty enough to impress a man.
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: She pretends to love Rapunzel because she needs the magic hair to keep herself young and beautiful. The Series shows that Gothel treated her biological daughter like a glorified maid, and any seeming acts of kindness (such as giving her a music box) were only used to get the "lousy little pest" to leave her alone.
• Jiggle Physics: Being Disney's first CGI villainess, her breasts are very well animated.
• "Just Joking" Justification: How she often plays off her nastier jokes and comments to Rapunzel. This also serves the double purpose of chipping away at Rapunzel's self-esteem to make her easier to control.
• Kick the Dog: Even setting aside the constant passive-aggressive insults she throws at Rapunzel, she literally kicks Pascal out of her way at one point.
• Lady in Red: She takes any opportunity to flaunt her curvaceous figure, uses her looks to get favors, and wears a carmine dress.
• Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: She is the Dark Feminine (a cold and ruthless Proud Beauty) to Rapunzel's Light Feminine (sweet, innocent, and Obliviously Beautiful). Mother Gothel is dark-haired in contrast to Rapunzel's Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold.
• Like Parent, Like Child: Her biological daughter introduced in the Series has her sense of humor and her possessive, hypocritical, self-centered traits.
• Living Forever Is Awesome: She resorts to extreme measures to ensure she can continue to live indefinitely and never shows any signs of weariness. It's especially awesome if you're eternally young and beautiful.
• Male Gaze: Her breasts and butt are seen from many flattering angles.
• Manipulative Bitch: What she does to Rapunzel for 18 years and how she recruits the Stabbington Brothers in order to get what she wants.
• Meaningful Appearance: Mother Gothel's eyes are strikingly gray. On top of being very, very determined to keep Rapunzel (i.e. her healing powers) in her possession, it sharply contrasts to her "daughter's" bright green eyes.
• Ms. Fanservice: Is a tall, busty, beautiful woman who wears a low-cut dress and moves very seductively.
• My Beloved Smother: She won't even let Rapunzel out of the tower. Though that's because she cares more about the hair than the girl it's attached to.
• Narcissist:
  • She hoarded the power of the Sundrop just to keep herself young and beautiful. In "A Tale of Two Sisters", it is revealed that she kept a number of enchanted mirrors, using them to record her either complimenting her own looks, or bringing up moments when others complimented her looks.
  • "Mother Knows Best" is a hymn she sings to praise her own alleged wisdom.
• No Celebrities Were Harmed: For some reason, she looks really similar to Cher.
• No Honor Among Thieves: She promises the Stabbington brothers more wealth, and revenge. They get the latter, and an arrest.
• One Bad Mother: Mother Gothel is an abusive parent.
• Outdated Outfit: Her clothing is centuries out of date, serving as a signifier that she's a lot older than she seems.
• Parental Abandonment: The Series reveals that after kidnapping Rapunzel, she attempted to flee back to her cottage where Cassandra was still waiting, but seeing the royal guards get there first, she turned around and left. And poor Cass saw the whole thing...
• Parental Neglect: She would frequently leave Rapunzel in her tower with toys and whatever else she liked, only returning whenever she needed to be de-aged. She did this to Cassandra, too.
• Posthumous Character: At the end of the movie, she dies of Rapid Aging, but she appears in the sequel series in flashbacks, nightmares, and visions. The series expands her backstory: She used to be Zhan Tiri's follower, and before she kidnapped Rapunzel, she had her own daughter, Cassandra.
• Pragmatic Villainy:
  • Her original plan wasn't to kidnap Rapunzel; she cut off a lock of golden hair to take away and realized, to her shock, that she'd need the girl it belongs to as well, as the hair loses its power when cut.
  • She takes care of Rapunzel so her Fountain of Youth won't run dry. She makes Rapunzel's favorite soup and brings her rare paints to keep her placated, and protects her "daughter" from dangers she herself hyped up to keep her secured in the tower. She says she loves her so Rapunzel will love her, care for her, and never leave her.
  • In the end, she acquiesces to Rapunzel's plea to heal Eugene in return for a resumption of the status quo. Not out of any moral concern — she stabbed him in the first place — but because a willing prisoner is more manageable than a recalcitrant one.
• Predecessor Villain: At the very least she is this to her daughter, Cassandra.
• Primp of Contempt: While Rapunzel is trying to spit out that she wants to leave her tower and see the floating lights on her birthday, Mother Gothel is only passively listening, with her biggest concern being looking at her face and skin in the mirror.
• Proud Beauty: She's enamored with her own appearance and takes any opportunity to flaunt her curvaceous figure and use her looks to get favors. The desire to maintain her beauty forever is what drives her to villainy.
• Quirky Curls: She has curly black hair and can be rather eccentric.
• Rapid Aging: Immediately ages back to her true age when Rapunzel's hair is cut by Eugene, to the point she is eventually Reduced to Dust.
• Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She is a Proud Beauty with black hair and fair skin.
• Really 700 Years Old: In the opening narration, it's said that she predates Rapunzel's kingdom by several centuries. The series reveals that she was one of the disciples of Lord Demanitus in ancient times.
• Red and Black and Evil All Over: She has raven hair and wears a red dress, which she frequently complements with a Black Cloak.
• Sinister Schnoz: She has a prominent hooked nose, especially in comparison to Rapunzel's small button nose. Her nose is even more pronounced in the series, where we learn of even more of her previous evil deeds.
• Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer: She barely features in any of the trailers if they show her at all, while in the film proper she's the Big Bad who even appears on-screen before Rapunzel and Flynn do.
• The Sociopath: Mother Gothel never loved Rapunzel and only faked affection in order to better control her. She raises one of the nicest girls in the world for eighteen years and never sees her as anything more than a tool for her to use and abuse.
• Statuesque Stunner: She is a very tall and beautiful woman. Shorty Lampshades this.

"Somebody get me a glass, 'cause I found a tall drink o' water!"

• Strong Family Resemblance: Averted: Gothel and her "daughter" Rapunzel look nothing alike. In the Series, however, Cassandra has her grey eyes and curly black hair.
• Sugary Malice: Her Villain Song "Mother Knows Best" and its Dark Reprise are both masterclass in this trope.
• Terms of Endangerment: She calls Rapunzel "my dear" and "flower". Gothel fakes affection and only sees Rapunzel as her magic flower, not a person.
• Then Let Me Be Evil: Discussed, but Averted, as she was never really good to begin with, and instead of having a Face–Heel Turn she just drops the facade.
  Gothel: You want me to be the bad guy? Fine — now I'm the bad guy...
• Third-Person Person: "Mother Knows Best," she sings about herself. Also, "Mother's feeling a little run down, my dear..."
• Vain Sorceress: Apart from not showing any magical powers of her own, she completely embodies this trope, hoarding a magical healing flower to keep herself young and beautiful for centuries, and then kidnapping baby Rapunzel and raising her in a tower for 18 years when the flower's power is transferred to her. In addition, she often puts down Rapunzel and compliments herself.
• Villain Has a Point: While she was only trying to scare Rapunzel into staying in the tower, Gothel had a point in that there are people who will take advantage of her, especially if they learn about the power of her hair. After all, Gothel herself is one of those people.
• Villainous Breakdown: Right after Eugene cuts off Rapunzel's hair, nullifying their healing powers, Gothel can only witness in horror and stumble around as she suddenly quickly ages to death.
  Gothel: NO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?
• Villainous Legacy: During the series, Rapunzel isn't quite free from Gothel's influence even though she's long dead, because Gothel has been haunting her dreams for quite some time. It is later revealed that Cassandra is her biological daughter, which leads to Cassandra turning against Rapunzel over Gothel choosing Rapunzel over her.
• Wise Old Folk Façade: She steals baby Rapunzel and raises her as her own daughter, teaching her her own values and playing the role of the "caring mother". That is, until her true colors are revealed and the facade is out after Rapunzel finds out the truth about her origins and powers.
• Your Days Are Numbered: The anti-aging effects of Rapunzel's hair slowly begin to wear off after some time, so she has to find Rapunzel and sing the healing song to preserve her immortality. If she doesn't, she'll eventually die off.

Flynn's partners-in-crime at the beginning of the film, whom he leaves at the mercy of the kingdom guards to save his own ass. They're clearly not happy about it, and partner up with Mother Gothel to get him.

• Character Development: A minor example. The Stabbington Brothers hate Eugene's guts, and Rapunzel's guts as well by association, but they still decide to attend Rapunzel and Eugene's wedding when they're invited in "Tangled Ever After", which implies that they finally relinquished at least some of their grudge towards Eugene after he saved their lives in "Return Of The King".
• Co-Dragons: Gothel convinces them to work with her to get rid of Flynn Rider, but is unlikely that they saw themselves as subservient to her.
• The Dividual: A pair of thieves who appear to be twins and are never apart.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: After trying to kill Eugene for revenge several times throughout the series, the Stabbington brothers are thoroughly confused when he decides to save their lives in "Return Of The King", because of their prior history. After all, if their situations had been reversed, they almost certainly wouldn't have done the same.
• Evil Redhead: Both of them are gingers, and their main motivations are stealing the crown and getting sweet, deadly revenge on Flynn.
• Eyepatch of Power: Averted. One of the brothers has an eyepatch but is not shown to be more or less effective than the other.
• Friendly Enemy: "Tangled Ever After" shows that Flynn invited them to his and Rapunzel's wedding, and the two openly cry when the newlyweds have their first kiss as husband and wife. In fact, this might have started as far back as the ending of "Return of the King", where they appreciate the former thief for saving their lives despite all the bad things they did to him.
  Eugene: Edmund, long-lost father, meet the Stabbingtons, lifelong nemesis. Edmund claims that he is my father but you know, I actually have more of a story with you guys, so in a way, this is kind of like a family gathering for me.
• Identical Twin ID Tag: They are twins differentiated by sideburns, the Eyepatch of Power one of them wears, their scars, their clothes, and weapons.
• Meaningful Name: They're the Stabbington brothers, and they pretty clearly have a history with (and a motivation for) killing.
• Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Parodied and inverted in a sense, since are backstabbed by Flynn at the beginning of the movie, instead of the other way around.
• No Name Given: Well, no first name, anyway. When they return, they're nicknamed Patchy and Sideburns.
• Revenge: Gothel gets them to help her with the promise of getting back at Eugene for stealing the tiara from them. In the series, they repeatedly seek revenge against Eugene.
• Sibling Team: Also Siblings in Crime. The two of them seem to work exclusively together, to the point that their first names aren't given and their "wanted" posters list them together.
• Single-Minded Twins: Identical twins who act alike.
• Villain Decay: In-Universe. While they're both genuine threats to the heroes, their criminal acquaintances consider them to be laughingstocks since they keep getting foiled by Flynn — sorry, Eugene Fitzherbert — alongside the princess and her pet chameleon.
• The Voiceless: The eyepatch brother never speaks, just giving intimidating glares at people.

"This could've gone so differently, Demanitus, but because of you, I will finally lay waste to your beloved Corona... and all who inhabit it!"

A powerful witch sealed away in the Demanitus Device by Lord Demanitus. Despite being imprisoned, at least until the third season, Zhan Tiri's power and network of loyal followers still lurk around in the shadows.

• Acid-Trip Dimension: The place she was trapped in for a long time, the Lost Realm, would definitely qualify as it looks incredibly weird and mutates anyone who enters in many weird ways.
• A Form You Are Comfortable With: She explains to Rapunzel that she takes the form of whatever she needs at the time. However, we later find out that Zhan Tiri was trapped in this form, and needed the Moonstone and Sundrop to regain her true form and her full power.
  Enchanted Girl: You see, over the centuries, I've taken the form of whatever suits my needs: A warlock, a demon, even a blizzard.
• The Ageless: She has been alive for a thousand years and hasn't aged at all, in fact, quite the opposite.
• All Your Powers Combined: "A Tale of Two Sisters" reveals that she intends to take the powers of both the Sundrop and the Moonstone for herself.
• Ambiguously Evil: At first. Although she appeared as a pretty young girl made of translucent blue with a kindly voice and claimed to be Cassandra's friend, she was heavily implied to be evil, as she revealed Cassandra's past to persuade her to stop being second-best to Rapunzel, which was serious enough for Lord Demanitus to warn Eugene about this and leading to Cassandra taking the Moonstone. The implication was confirmed later, however, when it was revealed that she's actually Zhan Tiri in a different form, and a textbook example of Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon.
• Ambiguously Human: We don't even know who or what Zhan Tiri is. Her silhouetted form shows her having a demonic, goat-like head. It turns out she is a shapeshifter. The silhouetted form gets revealed in the finale after she steals both the Sundrop and Moon Opal. It is a mix between a mythical bicorn and a squid, with the former's goat-like head, and the latter's lower torso with tentacles.
• Arch-Enemy:
  • She and Lord Demanitus were this in ancient times. Demanitus was the one to seal her away, and he even refers to Zhan Tiri as his old nemesis. It is later revealed that they used to be friends and partners - possibly more - before Zhan Tiri made a Face–Heel Turn out of power lust.
  • She could also be considered this to Rapunzel in the present day, as her main goal is to use Cassandra to finish Rapunzel and Corona for good.
• Asshole Victim: Nobody cared when Zhan Tiri was killed in the final episode considering how awful she was.
• Astral Projection: It's implied her ghostly Enchanted Girl form is this, since her physical form was trapped in the Lost Realm at the time.
• Ax-Crazy: In one Extra-Long Episode alone, the Enchanted Girl proves to be completely off her rocker.
• Bad Boss: Implied with her minion Sugracha as she just vanishes once she is kicked in The Lost Realm with Zhan Tiri.
• Battle Boomerang: In "Race to the Spire", she uses a boomerang as her weapon. She even had it millennia ago.
• Big Bad: For the entire series, although only as an active force in the latter half of Season 3. After being unsealed from her prison, she takes the role of the main threat with Cassandra as The Heavy.
• Big Bad Friend: She's the Big Bad and was previously friends with Demanitus.
• Big Bad Wannabe: Subverted in the series finale. Though Cassandra tries to make her this by trapping her inside a cage made of black rocks, Zhan Tiri quickly manages to escape and take the Moonstone from Cassandra, taunting and imprisoning her afterward. Also, she's the final threat that Rapunzel and her allies must face before the series's end, with a plan to destroy Corona with an eclipse and obtain the powers of the Sundrop and the Moonstone.
• Big "NO!": Lets out one before her death and during her Villainous Breakdown.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: She ends up getting the Sundrop and Moonstone after so many centuries only for it to kill her.
• Because Destiny Says So: Basically how she tries to justify everything both to herself and Cassandra.
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:
  • Though she acts kind towards Cassandra and pretends to sympathize with her, she doesn't stray away from showing the evil and sadistic being she truly is to her, especially after she regains her physical form, but hiding it apparently isn't needed to keep Cassandra under her control. As for Varian, she comes across to him as incredibly creepy while invading his dreams, but is still able to feign helpfulness towards him.
  • "Race to the Spire" has her disguising herself as Calliope to trick Rapunzel and Eugene. Then again, Calliope isn't a considerate person herself, and Rapunzel isn't fooled.
• Blackmail: She does this twice in the episode "Race to the Spire".
  • First when she threatens to kill Calliope if Rapunzel doesn't give Cassandra the key to the mind-trap.
  • Second when she threatens to use an oil lamp to trap Calliope in limbo for 10,000 years if she doesn't give Cassandra the mind-trap.
• Blessed with Suck: After obtaining the Moonstone and Sundrop, she must make sure they don't merge, or else she'll be destroyed, which is exactly what happens when Rapunzel and Cassandra succeed in merging them.
• Body Horror: While appearing in Varian's dreams, she first introduces herself to him as a giant blue female head. Even when she displays her true form to the understandably unsettled teenage boy, she proceeds to, quite literally, split herself in half for a moment before reassembling her body and twisting her head 180°. 
• Bond Villain Stupidity: Even someone as smart as Zhan Tiri is not immune to this, as she lets Rapunzel and Cassandra live after she steals the Sundrop and Moonstone because she thinks they are powerless to stop her. This ultimately proves to be her undoing.
• Breakout Villain: She was initially just the instigator of one episode and background master to a One-Shot villain in another episode in Season 1 until she slowly became more important until taking over as the Big Bad.
• Bright Is Not Good: Her Enchanted Girl form is a bright light blue and she is the one who wants to destroy Corona.
• Brought Down to Normal: After she was transformed into her Enchanted Girl form she lost almost all her powers.
• Card-Carrying Villain: She clearly takes delight in being evil and isn't angered when others refer to her as such, viewing compassion as a weakness.
• The Chessmaster:
  • Manipulates events leading to a battle between Rapunzel and Cassandra that releases her from her prison.
  • In "A Tale of Two Sisters", she plants a magic mirror of Mother Gothel's memories on Rapunzel, leading Cass to wrongfully accuse Rapunzel of withholding information, while she deliberately hides a shard that reveals Mother Gothel is secretly annoyed by Cassandra, with Cass uncovering this in "Once a Handmaiden".
• Combat Tentacles: Her monstrous form is equipped with tentacles, and she uses them to fight the heroes in the last episode.
• The Comically Serious: In "Race to the Spire", she uses a boomerang and a hoop as weapons, gets attacked by badgers, and trips on candies. The fact that she is still played completely seriously only adds to the humor of her situation in that episode.
• Connected All Along: Mother Gothel was once one of her minions.
• Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: While Mother Gothel's goals were limited to wanting to stay young and beautiful forever, Zhan Tiri outright seeks to carry out a genocide for incredibly petty reasons, making her far more dangerous and even eviler than Gothel.
• The Corrupter: Played With. She's the catalyst for Cassandra's Face–Heel Turn, and later actively encourages her to kill Rapunzel to "fulfill her destiny". however, when Cassandra herself confronts her about this in the penultimate episode, she gleefully reminds Cassandra that all she did was "nudge" her along by reminding her of her Dark and Troubled Past, and that stealing the Moonstone and everything after that was all entirely her own choices.
• Crazy-Prepared: One of her main qualities is her ability to make absolutely sure her plans make their way. Case in point, she makes sure that Cassandra doesn't find out about who she is, that Rapunzel and Cassandra don't reconcile, that Cassandra is convinced by her lies, and last but not least, that Cassandra doesn't return to Rapunzel's side.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: She defeats basically every Coronan standing up to her with no effort.
• Cute Is Evil: As the Enchanted Girl, she looks like a cute little girl, but has a soul as black as night.
• Dark Is Evil: Following the revelation that she's Zhan Tiri, she has black eyebrows and eyelashes. She's also almost completely black after transforming into her demoness form.
• Deal with the Devil: Implied to be what Mother Gothel, Tromus, and Sugracha made with Zhan Tiri.
• Death by Irony: She is killed by the very things she sought after for so many years.
• Death Is Gray: When she casts the decay incantation to murder all of Corona, the town and the citizens' slow death are represented by them getting grayer.
• Demon of Human Origin: She was once a human but gained shapeshifting demonic powers over time.
• Devil in Plain Sight: She does seem to be able to walk around Corona without anyone paying her any mind after she is freed from her prison.
• Disproportionate Retribution: She wants to destroy Corona and everyone in it because in her mind Demanitus turned his back on her.

  • As revealed in the final season, Zhan Tiri makes her first brief appearance in "Queen For a Day" in the form of the deadly blizzard that almost destroyed Corona when Rapunzel was put in charge.
  • The Enchanted Girl's voice is first heard calling Cassandra's name in "Rapunzeltopia".
• Elemental Powers: She has the ability to turn into a blizzard (water) and summon an earthquake (earth) as shown when Sugracha was attempting to bring her back.
• Elemental Shapeshifter: She used her shapeshifting powers to transform into a blizzard.
• Eldritch Abomination: When Zhan Tiri appears in her true form, it's that of a Lovecraftian goat-demoness with tentacle legs.
• The End of the World as We Know It: Zhan Tiri wanting to destroy a major important kingdom like Corona and everyone inside would probably qualify.
• Enfant Terrible: As a spirit, she certainly looks like a young girl, but it's highly debatable whether she truly is one. Regardless, she freely manipulates Cassandra and wants her to destroy Rapunzel. Subverted once it turns out that she's Zhan Tiri, who's millennia old. However, the finale reveals she Was Once a Man, so it's probable the Enchanted Girl form is legitimately what she looked like as a child.
• Establishing Character Moment: Her first scene is of her pretending to be Cassandra's friend and manipulating her for her own agenda.
• Et Tu, Brute?: She betrayed Lord Demanitus, but had felt like he turned his back on her.
• Equal-Opportunity Evil: She doesn't really seem to have any issue with who serves her having both men and women as minions.
• Evil Is Bigger: In her demoness form she towers over every other character and she's eviler than them all.
• Evil Brit: She's pure evil and, for some reason, she speaks with a British accent.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: She's confused when Rapunzel saves a few fish creatures that just tried to kill her. This, combined with her later deducing Rapunzel's weakness is compassion, makes it likely she has no understanding of the concept of empathy or kindness aside from it being a tool.
• Evil Counterpart:
  • To Rapunzel. Both of them were former allies of alchemists (Varian for Rapunzel, and Demanitus for Zhan Tiri), only to end up failing them in one way or another. They've also both been imprisoned for most of their lives, and each has an elemental destiny. However, while Rapunzel is an All-Loving Hero who is kind to almost everyone she meets and constantly changes things for the better, Zhan Tiri is a genocidal monster who's utterly incapable of empathy or love. And while Rapunzel and Varian became friends again, Zhan Tiri and Demanitus never made amends.
  • To Varian. They both turned their backs on goodness and instead started plotting against Corona after feeling betrayed. However, while Varian had noble desires and turned back to the good side, Zhan Tiri has absolutely no redeeming qualities and ultimately dies.
• Evil Feels Good: As she states herself, she's quite thrilled to be back, now that she's released from her prison and can wreak havoc once more.
• Evil Former Friend: To Lord Demanitus. She was originally going to help him on his quest for the Sundrop and Moonstone, but ended up betraying him to gain power for herself.
• Evil Genius: She is very smart, being able to carefully manipulate things from behind the scenes to lead to her return.
• Evil Gloating: In the series finale, she gloats about how Rapunzel and Cassandra kept the Sundrop and Moonstone safe, which means she can now finally use them. She also tells Rapunzel she's nothing despite having been a Worthy Opponent once, and mocks Cassandra for losing before she even began, and being felled by her own ego just like her mother was.
• Evil Is Deathly Cold: Zhan Tiri can transform into a blizzard and she's pure evil.
• Evil Is Petty: Her ultimate goal is to destroy Corona and its people to get back at Demanitus for imprisoning her, knowing how much he cared about the kingdom. She also taunts Rapunzel completely unnecessarily, simply to gloat.
• Evil Laugh: She lets out these a lot, especially when her plans are working.
• Evil Mentor: She encourages Cassandra to embrace her anger to wield the power of the Moonstone.
• Evil Plan: She wants to destroy all of Corona as Revenge for Demanitus in her mind betraying her.
• Evil Sorceress: She has access to her fair share of magical powers in the past and after gaining access to the Sundrop and Moonstone.
• Evil Sounds Deep: She gains a much deeper voice after obtaining the Sundrop and Moonstone.
• Evil Versus Evil: She briefly had one with Cassandra.
• Eviler than Thou: To all of her minions (Mother Gothel, Sugracha the Eternal, Tromus, and Cassandra), outclassing them all in the danger level.
• Evil Wears Black: She gains a physical form that incorporates black.
• Face–Heel Turn: Long ago, Zhan Tiri sought to do what was right and aided Demanitus, only to end up trying to gain power for herself and having to be banished to Limbo by her former partner and friend.
• Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: She initially appears as a pretty young girl who emits a blue glow and pretends to be Cassandra's friend. As Season 3 progresses, however, a sinister side of her is shown, especially since she's trying to get Cassandra to destroy Rapunzel. Then, "Cassandra's Revenge" reveals that she's a sadistic and purely evil spirit bent on making Rapunzel suffer, and she does a lot of Body Horror to herself as she appears in Varian's dreams. Flashing Slasher Smiles increasingly often, she also lets out a devious crackle as the battle between Rapunzel and Cassandra releases her from her prison, and a Freeze-Frame Bonus reveals that she is none other than Zhan Tiri. Once the Wham Episode is done, she incorporates a Dark Is Evil physical form that demonstrates the monster she truly is inside.
• False Friend: Just like how Mother Gothel manipulates others through a faked motherly exterior, the Enchanted Girl takes advantage of those vulnerable via a faux-friendly demeanor.
• Fatal Flaw: Arrogance. Which causes her to not kill Cassandra and Rapunzel alone after they are depowered believing them to no longer be a threat, which eventually leads to her death.
• Faux Affably Evil: Even when making her malicious intentions clear, the Enchanted Girl tends to speak in a soft, polite, almost soothing manner.
• Final Boss: She is the final threat that Rapunzel and her allies must face before the series's end, with a plan to destroy Corona with an eclipse and obtain the powers of the Sundrop and the Moonstone, in addition to performing an Eviler than Thou on Cassandra.
• Forced Transformation: This form is actually a regressed version of Zhan Tiri's mortal self. Once brought into the physical realm, her Enchanted Girl form prevents her from using her powers or transforming. The most she's probably able to do in this form is make herself look scarier and manipulate Cassandra. Humorously enough, it can be assumed that this form is legitimately what Zhan Tiri once looked like as a child.
• Freudian Excuse: Despite her suggesting she was cheated out of her destiny, it turns out to be subverted. Unlike other villains who are for the most part products of circumstance (like Cassandra, Varian, or Lady Caine), she has no tragic event or circumstance in her past that drove her to The Dark Side. She simply ended up becoming (or rather, is) a horrible person. As time went on, she developed a ruthless streak and became all about seeking power.
• Friend-or-Idol Decision: She ended up having this with Lord Demanitus in the past where she had to choose between him and getting the Sundrop and Moonstone for herself. In the end, she chooses the Sundrop and Moonstone.
• Genocide from the Inside: Wants to wipe out all of Corona where she is implied to have come from.
• The Ghost: She never makes a full appearance until Season 3.
• Glowing Eyes of Doom: After she gains possession of the Sundrop and the Moonstone, her left eye glows blue and her right eye glows yellow.
• Go Mad from the Isolation: Downplayed, but while she was already evil and power-hungry prior to her banishment, she displays great creepiness and unstableness both before and after she's released. Angry even lampshades she wouldn't want to be in her place.
• Greater-Scope Villain:
  • Of the movie due to the fact that she is the reason Mother Gothel knows everything about the Sundrop, making her indirectly responsible for Rapunzel's kidnapping as a child.
  • She is also this of the series. Despite her status as The Ghost, her actions influence the course the series takes. She's the one who cast the curse on Corona that caused the blizzard, or rather, shapeshifted into the blizzard, and indirectly led to Varian's Start of Darkness and status as Arc Villain for the remainder of the season. As the Enchanted Girl, she manipulated Cassandra into being the Arc Villain of Season 3. She becomes the series's Big Bad after being freed. She is also one in the tie-in comics, as while her followers are the main threat to Rapunzel, they are all acting on her orders. She also used the Great Tree, which has some connection to the Sundrop and Moonstone, and Mother Gothel was one of the three former acolytes of Demanitus who summoned her.
• Green Thumb: Thus far, almost every time she's been involved in matters save for the kingdom-encompassing blizzard has involved some form of incredibly deadly flora, to the extent that even her followers use plants in their efforts to further her goals.
• Hated by All: Considering she seeks to bring upon destruction and genocide, this is probably to be expected. In "Plus Est en Vous", all of Corona, especially Eugene and Varian, rise up against her, and she more than returns the favor by attempting to murder them all.
• Hate Sink: She's made to be as loathsome as possible throughout Season 3. She's a Manipulative Bitch who deliberately preys on Cassandra's insecurities to play her against Rapunzel for her own gains. "A Tale of Two Sisters" makes her even more despicable when she sabotages any hopes of Cassandra reconciling with Rapunzel so Cassandra can remain a self-absorbed pawn of hers.
• Hero Killer: Subverted. While her actions do lead to Cassandra's death after her Heel–Face Turn, she is revived quickly by Rapunzel using the Healing Incantation.
• Hey, You!: She has referred to Rapunzel as "child", Varian as "the boy", and Cassandra as "girl". This shows how much she looks down on others.
• Hidden Agenda Villain: It's not shown exactly why she wants to kill Rapunzel and make Cassandra the holder of the Sundrop and Moonstone, or how she knows so much about the Moonstone, Cassandra, and Lord Demanitus. In the former case, it's ultimately revealed that it's because she's Zhan Tiri trying to escape from her prison.
• Hidden Depths: Loving to eat grapes is not really something you would expect from a sadistic, genocidal demoness.
• Hoist by Her Own Petard: She engineered the conflict between Cassandra and Rapunzel to free herself from Limbo, but this resulted in a shard of the Moonstone breaking off, which Rapunzel was able to use to briefly reawaken her powers to fight her. Additionally, she's defeated by using the aforementioned magical hair to pull her hands apart, so when Rapunzel suddenly cuts it, her wrists, and the Sundrop and Moonstone on them, slam into each other, destroying her.
• Hypocrite Has a Point: Tells Cassandra she was felled by her own ego, but she herself is clearly way too full of... herself, and ends up being defeated by the two girls she thought were powerless to stop her. Granted, her point still is very true.
• I Lied: No matter how many times she claims to Cassandra that she wants to help her fulfill her destiny, she's always just in it for herself, and snatches the Moonstone from Cassandra in the finale.
• Invisible to Normals: Only Cassandra can see her, and it's not explained why or how. The only way she can make herself known is by entering people's dreams, which was how she appeared to Varian. But she does indeed have a physical form.
• It's All About Me: Her plans constitute of nothing that will benefit Cassandra, only her. Heck, the reason she betrayed Demanitus in the first place is because she sought to have the Sundrop and Moonstone for herself.
• It's Personal: How she views her goal of destroying Corona because of Demanitus.
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk:
  • Don't think she genuinely sympathizes with Cassandra and is doing what she thinks is best for her, because she's only using her to fulfill her own desires. Her manipulation of Cassandra also enables her to be released from her prison.
  • In "Race to the Spire", she lets Calliope go after Rapunzel gives Cassandra the Mind Trap talisman, only to then taunt Rapunzel for her compassion.
• The Juggernaut: She just doesn't know when to stop!
  • As much as she despises her imprisonment in the Lost Realm, she doesn't let it deter her, and relentlessly tries to find ways for her to be released, starting with manipulating Cassandra.
  • Even when Cassandra repeatedly reconsiders her path, she keeps finding new tactics to keep Cassandra under her control.
  • Following her release, opportunities for her plans to obtain the Sundrop and Moonstone to be foiled keep popping up, like Cassandra warming up to Rapunzel again, discovering her trickery and identity, or even wanting to apologize to Rapunzel. Of course, she just keeps on finding new ways to maintain her control over Cassandra and have her plans still coming along.
  • Yes, Cassandra no longer trusts her, and traps her in a cage made of black rocks, but she is able to use one of Varian's vials to set herself free.
  • She also doesn't let all of Corona going up against her deter her either, after gaining the power of the Moonstone and Sundrop, and is quick to attempt destruction and genocide on the kingdom, nearly succeeding.
  • Once Rapunzel and Cassandra team up again, knock her out, and try to unite the Sundrop and Moonstone to destroy her, she still attempts to resist (with Cassandra admitting she's too strong), only to soon die, letting out a Rapid-Fire "No!" as she is destroyed.
• Karma Houdini Warranty: After having basically everything go incredibly well for her ever since she started manipulating Cassandra, she winds up dying in the finale.
• Killed Off for Real: Is finally killed on in the series after surviving for so long.
• Knight of Cerebus: Though she doesn't appear, her actions that caused the events in "Queen for a Day" marked the point where the series takes a darker turn in tone.
• Lack of Empathy: She does not care who gets hurt or killed in order for her to achieve her goals.
• Large and in Charge: Inverted. As the Enchanted Girl, she's much shorter than Cassandra, but is clearly the one pulling the strings and tends to give her orders. This is also the case with Gothel, Tromus, and Sugracha, in which she's their master.
• Large Ham: Though she's at least able to keep a calm and soothing demeanor as the Enchanted Girl, once she's gained her demonic form, she holds nothing back.
• Lean and Mean: Back when she was human, she was a tall and lean power-hungry woman.
• Light Is Not Good: Her ghostly appearance has a light blue glow like the rest of the good spirits, but is not telling on her vile nature. She also later used the light powers of the Sundrop in her final battle.
• Living Statue: Sort of, as when Tromus traps Rapunzel in the dream world to get the Sundrop's power for Zhan Tiri, her getting the power is represented by a statue slowly getting greener.
• Made of Iron: In the Grand Finale she takes a ton of hits but seems to be basically unaffected by it.
• Manipulative Bitch: She uses both Cassandra and Varian for her own ends. With the former, she preys on her insecurities and resentment against Rapunzel, to turn her against her loved ones, eventually causing a chain of events that releases her from her prison. She even takes pride in this ability of hers, shamelessly admitting to Rapunzel that she's playing Cassandra.
  Enchanted Girl: Cassandra knows only what I want her to know. I'm playing her, Rapunzel. She has no idea, but she is under my complete control.
• Mind Rape: Basically what she gives to Varian when she enters his mind.
• Merlin Sickness: Not only was Zhan Tiri trapped in this form unable to use her powers, but being trapped in the netherworldy dimension caused this form to age backward into a young girl.
• Mood-Swinger: She definitely veers into this territory. For example, in the series finale, her reaction to obtaining the Sundrop and Moonstone is at first akin to a toddler that got the toy they always wanted, or a teenager that got the latest phone brand, just before she dissolves into downright horrifying evil laughter and gains a far more monstrous form and voice.
• Mysterious Past: For a while, her past was unknown with hints being dropped throughout the series on what it could be. In the series finale, it's revealed she was once a friend to Lord Demanitus before being consumed by her own power-hungry nature and getting banished to The Lost Realm.
• Narcissist: She states that she loves the shapeshifting cloak, which makes sense, considering she herself is a shapeshifter. Also, her self-absorbedness reaches extreme levels.
• Near-Villain Victory: She nearly succeeds in destroying all of Corona in the Grand Finale with several citizens near death.
• Necessary Drawback: When she gets access to the Sundrop and Moonstone, she can't let them touch, or else she'll be destroyed, which is what ends up defeating her as, without that, there would be no way to defeat her.
• Never My Fault: She blames Demanitus for turning his back on her, although she was the one who sought the Sundrop and Moonstone for herself.
• Never Say "Die":
  • Downplayed. Though she tries to get Cassandra to "destroy" Rapunzel, the tone in her voice while giving off this command, and her clearly malicious intentions, still manage to make it sound ominous.
  • Averted in the finale, where she outright states "Corona dies!"
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
  • Lampshaded by Rapunzel. If Zhan Tiri hadn't tricked Cassandra into taking the Moonstone, Rapunzel would have died after combining it with the Sundrop. Zhan Tiri unintentionally saved Corona's future ruler, who would also prove to be its greatest hero and the main foiler of Zhan Tiri's schemes. Furthermore, she accidentally laid down the groundwork for Rapunzel and Cassandra to destroy both the Sundrop and Moonstone whilst using Zhan Tiri as the one to combine them, resulting in her death.
  • Same with her betrayal of Cassandra. Zhan Tiri already had Cassandra under her control and believed she was right about everything, Cassandra had already destroyed Corona for her, and Cassandra would have combined the Sundrop and Moonstone, which would have killed her and left everyone alive powerless against Zhan Tiri's wrath. It was only her own greed to have the Sundrop and Moonstone that led to the opening for Cassandra and Rapunzel to make amends and for her to be disposed of.
• Nightmare Weaver: She has the ability to invade people's dreams and give them nightmares, which is what she did to Varian.
• Non-Action Big Bad: Justified as in her Enchanted Girl form she was incredibly weak until she got the Sundrop and Moonstone.
• No Name Given: In her Enchanted Girl form, she never tells anyone her name.
• "Not So Different" Remark: As she states herself, both she and Cassandra were cheated out of their destinies, and even want the same thing.
• Not-So-Harmless Villain: An In-Universe example. She initially appears to just be an innocent ghost girl but she is actually an extremely scary and competent villain who manages to nearly commit genocide on all of Corona.
• Our Demons Are Different: She is not involved in any Demonic Possession.
• Painful Transformation: Implied to be what happened to Zhan Tiri considering what happened to the heroes when they entered The Lost Realm.
• Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Her Enchanted Girl form looks like a young... girl, and is only about half Varian's height, yet she's a legendary Ancient Evil who can shapeshift into anything, even a blizzard.
• Playing Both Sides: She repeatedly tells Cassandra that Rapunzel is her enemy and that Cassandra should hurt her even more. She also goes into Varian's dream and tells him that the fourth incantation can be used to save Cassandra and gives him the clue he needs to find said incantation on the scroll. The former manipulation ensures that Cassandra will keep pushing Rapunzel until she fights back, while the latter manipulation ensures that Varian will give Rapunzel the means to fight back. Thus a fight between Sun and Moon is inevitable, a clash that releases her from her prison.
• Promotion to Opening Titles: In Season 3's opening, her illustration appears in Rapunzel's journal.
• Predecessor Villain: Many of the antagonists in Season 2 (and even two from the comics) are her disciples or servants.
• The Promise: Two thousand years ago, she promised Demanitus that she'll destroy Corona, and is hell-bent on fulfilling that promise.
• Psychotic Smirk:
  • She smiles behind Cassandra's back after telling her that the Moonstone's power wasn't "completely [hers]", knowing full well how she'd react.

• Really 700 Years Old: Zhan Tiri is over a thousand years old and she definitely doesn't look like it considering her child-like appearance.
• Redemption Rejection: Millennia ago, Demanitus tried to reason with Zhan Tiri multiple times to stop twisting their quest for the Sundrop and Moonstone so she can claim their powers for herself, but she refused to listen and attempted to strike him with a boomerang. This ultimately led to Demanitus being left with no choice but to banish her from the Earth to the Lost Realm.

• Samus Is a Girl: It's revealed at the end of "Cassandra's Revenge" that Zhan Tiri looks like a young girl. "Race to the Spire" goes as far as to reveal that Zhan Tiri's true gender is female, and a male warlock was one of her forms, which is further confirmed in the series finale.
• Satanic Archetype: Zhan Tiri is a demonic overlord who seeks ruin and destruction of the world, and her motif is hellish-looking fire. She takes the form of an innocent-looking girl who slowly corrupts Cassandra into realizing her inner hatred towards Rapunzel and taking the Moonstone, essentially resulting in Cassandra becoming The Antichrist and releasing her from her prison. And much like Satan, Zhan Tiri's story is one of revenge. Also, her archenemy's name is Lord Demanitus.
• Sealed Evil in a Can: She was imprisoned by Lord Demanitus long before the start of the series. She escapes thanks to a clash between the Sundrop and the Moonstone she orchestrated.
• Shadow Archetype: She's a horrifying example of what Varian and Cassandra could've become had they not let go of their hatred.
• Shapeshifter: She states she had this ability though she was trapped in her Enchanted Girl for a while.
• Shapeshifter Mode Lock: As mentioned she ended up trapped in the her Enchanted Girl form for a while.
• A Sinister Clue: She's the show's Big Bad and she appears to be left-handed, as that's the hand she throws her boomerang with.
• Slasher Smile: During "Cassandra's Revenge" and "Plus Est en Vous", she becomes increasingly unhinged, and it definitely shows in her smile.
• The Sociopath: Has no empathy or care for anyone besides herself, is completely unstable and sadistic, delights in both mental and physical torment, and proves to be capable of manipulating others (almost) flawlessly.
• Soft-Spoken Sadist: She always speaks in a soft, almost soothing manner, which only makes her true nature as a sadistic and truly evil spirit even more unnerving. Especially when paired with her frequent Slasher Smiles.
• Taking You with Me: She nearly gives one to Cassandra when she ends up killed in the process of defeating her but Cassandra ends up revived by Rapunzel.
• Terms of Endangerment: She calls Demanitus "My dear Demanitus", and refers to him as her Old Friend, which is because she is his Evil Former Friend.
• They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: The reason why she is able to roam freely throughout Corona is that she resembles a little girl, so no one would suspect anything.
• Took a Level in Badass: Initially starting out as a little girl barely able to fight before turning into an extremely powerful Eldritch Abomination.
• Treacherous Advisor: In Season 3. She guides Cassandra in mastering the Moonstone's powers, all the while pushing her into embracing hatred and Revenge towards Rapunzel.
• True Blue Femininity: She's translucent blue, and her voice and demeanor come across as feminine. At least until she reveals her vileness and gains her Dark Is Evil and gothic physical form.
• Unseen Evil: For a while, her true form was left unseen only being shown in silhouettes and statues. Until the Grand Finale where her true form is finally shown.
• Vagueness Is Coming: When she refers to a mysterious eclipse coming. Until we learn what that is and what it does in the Grand Finale.
• Viler New Villain: She is far worse than any other villain that has ever existed in the franchise, even outclassing Cassandra who is already an example of this trope.
• Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The Enchanted Girl is one of the vilest and sadistic villains in the Tangled franchise, proving herself worthy of this title not just with her crimes and behavior, but the Body Horror she subjects her spiritual form to while appearing in Varian's dreams and her Slasher Smiles too. Not helping is her committing on-screen attempted genocide.
• Villain Ball:
  • Instead of allowing Rapunzel to be in the dark about her plans and manipulative presence, she stops to gloat about Cassandra being under her control. Subverted as Rapunzel never uses this knowledge to her advantage.
  • Instead of disposing of the mirror shard that might allow Cassandra to see that Gothel really didn't love her, she leaves it lying around where Cassandra can pick it up and realize the truth of the situation. Subverted (again), as this winds up helping her.
• Villain Has a Point: In "Once A Handmaiden", once Cassandra realizes who she really is, Zhan Tiri decides to finally show her her true colors and tell her what she really thinks of her. Cassandra calls her an evil monster and insists that they're nothing alike, but Zhan Tiri is not convinced, and for good reasons. Zhan Tiri lied to her and used her to get what she wanted, but that's all that she did. At no point in Season 3 did Zhan Tiri force Cassandra to put everyone in the entire world in danger for her own self-gain, kidnap people so she could use them for leverage, try to murder all of her old friends to get them out of the way (or in Rapunzel's case, out of pure jealousy and spite), or magically enslave people so she could use them to get what she wanted. Zhan Tiri is a terrible person, and Cassandra is right behind her. This is taken one step further in the following episode, "Plus Est En Vous", where Zhan Tiri gives Cassandra a scathing "The Reason You Suck" Speech that is a major Kick the Dog moment for her but is also completely true.
• Villainous Breakdown: Lets out a Big "NO!" before she dies by the Sundrop and Moonstone in the series finale.
• Villain Respect: Zhan Tiri tells Rapunzel she was a worthy adversary. Bonus points given she's the Big Bad. It's subverted however as she follows that up by saying that she's nothing now.
• Virtue Is Weakness: Openly laughs when Rapunzel says that compassion is a strength.
• Voluntary Shapeshifting: Zhan Tiri is actually a shapeshifting demoness who can transform into anything, even a blizzard. However, her banishment caused her to be trapped in the form of the Enchanted Girl, meaning she can't shapeshift until she gets her full power back, and the energies of the Moonstone and the Sundrop are enough to do that.
• Walking Spoiler: The Enchanted Girl is really Zhan Tiri in a different form, and was behind Cassandra's Face–Heel Turn. Good luck talking about her without spoiling that.
• Was Once a Man: She used to be Demanitus's human companion, and achieved her demoness form through her first imprisonment in the Lost Realm.
• We Used to Be Friends: Was once good friends with Demanitus until she grew more and more power-hungry and betrayed him to get the Sundrop and Moonstone for herself. She also comments a few times on how they used to be friends.
• Would Hurt a Child: Considering she is the blizzard from "Queen for a Day", that means she had no problem endangering the life of a desperate fourteen-year-old. And the lives of many other children.
• Xanatos Speed Chess: Cassandra has backpedaled on her newfound evil ways and wanted to make amends with Rapunzel quite a few times, but the Enchanted Girl keeps finding new tactics that prevent her from going astray.
• You Are What You Hate: She despises it when people are robbed of their rightful destinies, and holds a very firm stance against people being used to further another person's own ends, ditto with betrayal, yet she herself turned her back on Demanitus and Cassandra for her own ends and cruelly manipulated the latter as part of her endgame goal.

• Affectionate Nickname: "Mother" and "Father" are old-fashioned pet names for a husband and wife.
• Ambiguously Human: A lot about them brings to mind stories of fair folk. When the magic of the teapot is destroyed, they disappear along with it.
• Bright Is Not Good: They wear bright clothes and even their bird forms remain white, but they're evil monsters.
• The Collector: They collect people by turning them into birds, letting them lose their humanity, and either caging or leashing them. Every bird they own was once a human being.
• Con Man: They're a unique variety where they don't do it for money. They do, however, have the skills to trick Rapunzel and Cassandra, like getting them to drink the magic tea without suspecting its properties, or giving the girls a false sense that they can change back if they want to.
• Large and in Charge: Mother is much larger than Father, and spends most the episode sitting around letting him con the others. However, once things start to go south, she takes charge, transforms into a massive hawk, and nearly tears Rapunzel and her friends apart.

• Create Your Own Villain: King Frederic's crackdown on crime is the reason she's antagonistic towards the royal family in the first place.
• Dark Action Girl: She's a good fighter, both in hand-to-hand combat and with a sword, albeit a too overconfident one.
• Deadpan Snarker: Most of her lines are either snide snark or bragging.
• Disk-One Final Boss: She is the Big Bad of the pilot movie, but she's quickly defeated and arrested at the end of it.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She does seem to genuinely care about her father (not unlike Varian towards Quirin), given that she laments his fate and the fact that she never got to see him again.
• Evil Counterpart: To Rapunzel. Her own father was taken from her as a result of Frederic cracking down on criminals, mirroring how Rapunzel herself was left without her father (or any of her parents) for a majority of her life; she's a free spirit; and she relies on the same tactic Rapunzel had in the pilot to avoid letting her parents know about her hair to disguise herself, covering her own hair with a huge wig.
• Freudian Excuse: King Frederic being overly harsh with the law led Caine's father, a petty thief, to rot in prison/be executed. She claims to have watched him get hauled away like an animal, and had never seen him again.
• Goldfish Poop Gang: By her appearance in Season 2, Lady Caine's Smug Snake tendencies have grown to the point where she is far less of a threat than she used to be, with Rapunzel defeating her without breaking a sweat.
• Master of Disguise: She cleverly disguises herself as a duchess to get into the castle and get closer to the King.
• Misplaced Retribution: Her anger and desire for revenge on King Frederic for imprisoning her father is undertandable...her blaming Rapunzel for it? No so much.
• Missing Mom: The fate of her mother is unknown.
• Moral Myopia: She shows no qualms about throwing Dwayne off the cart in order to speed up her escape, calling him "dead weight". But she is outraged when Axel leaves her behind, even claiming she isn't dead weight.
• Motive Decay: In her debut she attempts to permanently abduct King Frederic along with several other nobles, but in her second appearance she only tries to steal a large sum of Corona's treasure.
• Muscles Are Meaningless: Despite her petite build, she's very strong, being able to yank a thug twice her size towards her.
• Pride: Going along great with her Smug Snake persona, Lady Caine can never resist an opportunity to brag about herself, while being utterly disdainful towards everyone else.
• Smug Snake: Easily her Fatal Flaw. She is smart and very capable in combat, but tends to get carried away with herself and underestimate her opponents, which gives Cassandra the opportunity to defeat her.
• Starter Villain: She is the first villain faced by Rapunzel and her friends in the TV series.
• Warm-Up Boss: Lady Caine is the first to be a decent threat to Rapunzel in the series, before going into the more serious plot.

• Dirty Coward: As Rapunzel and Maximus pursue Lady Caine, Dwyane, and Axel, Axel unhitches himself from the wagon, leaving Lady Caine behind, while running from Maximus. After Rapunzel and Maximus capture Lady Caine, Maximus chases Axel and the black horse cowers at him while running.
• Icy Blue Eyes: He has cool, light-blue eyes that are in stark contrast with his black coat, and seem to symbolize his jerkiness.
• The Mole: Actually works for Lady Caine, and is planning to break her out of prison.
• The Rival: He is in fierce competition with Maximus the entire time he appears on-screen.

• Authority Equals Ass Kicking: Eugene fights his way through Anthony and the Baron's goons with ease. The Baron, however, takes him in solo combat and wins.
• Badass in a Nice Suit: He's massive and leads an entire syndicate of criminals, all the while dressed like any other aristocrat of his time.
• Beard of Evil: Has a large beard, and is a criminal mastermind.
• Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: The Baron is not someone to be trusted. His men will usually con other thieves into various heists, only to betray them and take their loot. Flynn Rider and Lance Strongbow found out the hard way.
• The Dreaded: No one has the guts to cross him. Steal from him, and you will regret it.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He genuinely loves his daughter, Stalyan.
• Evil Sounds Deep: Being voiced by Lance Henriksen gives off that sinister effect.
• Expy: Due to being a large and intimidating crime lord, he's quite similar to The Kingpin from Marvel Comics.
• The Ghost: Eugene has gotten in trouble with the Baron's men more than once, and he doesn't show up until the Season 2 premiere.
• Greater-Scope Villain: Everything related to Eugene and Lance's past goes back to the Baron. He's indirectly involved the in the Season 1 episodes "The Return Of Strongbow", where Eugene finds a stock of his old loot in one of his safehouses in Corona, and "Big Brothers of Corona", where Angry and Red are trying to run away from his men, and we even find out that Eugene's theft of the lost princess's crown in the original film was to pay off the Baron.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: The poisonous Kai spider he keeps in his ring that infects Lance with a venomous bite later poisons him and bites him back.
• Improbable Weapon User: Poisons people with a rare Kai spider he keeps in a large ring. The flaws in this method bite him at the climax, when he goes to poison Eugene and gets bumped, leading to the spider crawling up his sleeve and biting the Baron instead.
• Large and in Charge: One of the biggest people seen in the show, possible even bigger than Vladimir from the Snuggly Duckling.
• Loan Shark: The Baron has been known to lend money to people like Lance and Eugene, and have constantly been in debt. Eugene attempted to steal the crown because he needed to pay the Baron off.
• Papa Wolf: He wants to get back at Eugene in part because he left his daughter Stalyan stranded at the altar.
• Poison Ring: He keeps a very poisonous spider hidden in his ring.
• Riches to Rags: After being bitten by his own Kai spider, he lost his entire criminal empire, his daughter moved on with her life without him and he's cured but not before the spider venom disfigured him and even tells Rapunzel he has nothing to move on.

  The Baron: Because I have nothing to move on.

• Dragon Ascendant: Once the Baron is defeated, Weasel quickly takes charge of his men and proves himself to be even worse than his boss.

• Faux Affably Evil: He puts on a polite but very transparent facade usually to underscore his mockery or condescension.
• Gonk: He looks like a human scarecrow with a bruised, black eye.
• Meaningful Name: They don't call him "the Weasel" for nothing. A weasel is someone treacherous and deceitful, and that's what makes him dangerous.
• Mouth of Sauron: Weasel is the one who acts in the Baron's name and usually speaks for him, since the boss is hardly seen.
• Sinister Schnoz: He has an evil pointy one, looking like a human scarecrow.

• Casting Gag: Yvonne Strahovski playing an Action Girl who had a romantic relationship with Zachary Levi's character? Now, where have we seen that before...
• Control Freak: During her tenure as Eugene's partner-in-crime, Stalyan always thinks she "knows what's best" for Eugene as she once stated that she forced him to help her steal a rare sultan's jewel from the town of Pincosta and made a fortune out of it, despite Eugene's opposition over the plan as he finds it to be stupid. Consider the fact that Eugene felt tired of Stalyan trying to control his life, it is this very behavior that led Eugene to dump her in the first place.
  Stalyan: It's bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding, and the last thing any of us needs is... [looks over to Lance, slowly dying from the spider-bite] bad luck. Right, Flynn?
  Eugene: It's "Eugene" now!
  Stalyan: No, it's not. See you out there!
• Daddy's Little Villain: She's the Baron's daughter, they love each other dearly, and she enjoys being evil. He will give her anything she wants, even Flynn Rider's hand in marriage.
• Dating What Daddy Hates: At the series finale, she becomes Brock Thunderstrike's new girlfriend, who had trouble with her father a couple of episodes before.
• Domestic Abuse: Her unpleasant, controlling demeanor toward Eugene would certainly explain why he ditched her.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Genuinely loves her father and genuinely loved Flynn/Eugene enough that she felt hurt when he left her at the altar, not knowing that her controlling behavior is what drove him to do so in the first place.
• Evil Is Petty: While she knows Eugene does not love her and it is clear that she no longer loves him (or at least is in denial), she is forcing him to marry her as revenge for leaving her at the altar, even going so far as to make him reject Rapunzel right in front of her under the threat of Lance's death by spider-bite.
• Evil Redhead: Stalyan is Eugene's Psycho Ex-Girlfriend and Daddy's Little Villain with dark red hair.
• Femme Fatale: The ridiculously attractive daughter of a kingpin who likes to use her feminine charm to get others, even Eugene, to do what she wants. Ultimately, her self-interests caused Eugene to dump her.
• Fire-Forged Friends: She becomes this with Rapunzel in "The Eye of Pincosta".
• Foil:
  • To Lady Caine. Lady Caine was a Big Bad Wannabe and wanted revenge against the royal family for arresting and unfairly killing her father, who was a mere petty thief. Meanwhile, Stalyan is a Daddy's Little Villain to one of the most dangerous mob bosses in Corona and wants revenge against Eugene for ditching their wedding.
  • To Rapunzel, the woman who would later become Eugene's wife. Both Rapunzel and Stalyan are skilled negotiators who prefer words rather than violence but aren't afraid to get their hands dirty if they have to. Both hold a huge influence in their respective institutions. But while Rapunzel hailed from the Royal Family of Corona, Stalyan grew up in an organized crime family. Rapunzel uses her charisma to inspire loyalty and hope for others, while Stalyan uses hers to manipulate others into doing what she wants. Rapunzel will eventually marry Eugene, while Stalyan is his former lover whom he cared very much about, but ultimately left her at the altar because at the end of the day, Stalyan only cares about herself, such that any personal attachment towards him would not be enough for her to consider his feelings. This contrast ends up having a positive effect on Stalyan when she has to team up with Rapunzel, making her realize that there might be something to the way Rapunzel does things after all.
• Green-Eyed Monster: She's very jealous of Eugene's loving relationship with Rapunzel, especially since she was left at the altar by Eugene herself. She considers Rapunzel a homewrecker, and even physically fights Rapunzel because of it.
• Heel–Face Turn: In "The Eye of Pincosta", Stalyan has to team up with Rapunzel and is so caught off-guard by the princess's way of viewing things - and way of treating her - that she reconsiders her own life, personality, and feelings for Eugene, ultimately befriending Rapunzel and changing her ways.
• Icy Blue Eyes: She has blue eyes and is a Dark Action Girl.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Thanks to her Heel–Face Turn in "The Eye Of Pincosta", she relinquishes her obsession/grudge against Eugene and leaves him and Rapunzel in peace.

• Pragmatic Villainy: Poisoning Lance was her father's idea, not hers and she views the whole thing as needlessly flashy.
• Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: She's Eugene's ex. He left her at the altar once and she did not take that well—now she's back and determined to have him after all, forcing him to marry her by letting her father poison his best friend. She also acts hostile towards his current girlfriend Rapunzel. This all changes by the end of "The Eye of Pincosta".
• Woman Scorned: She's one of Eugene's crazy exes who has it out for him, and her father poisons Lance in an effort to force Eugene to marry her to satisfy her vengeance.
• Yandere: She's obsessed with Flynn Rider, and she'll use any excuse to keep him away from Rapunzel, or hurt anyone to get him back. That is, until she pulls a Heel–Face Turn in "The Eye of Pincosta" and lets him go.

The Collector

A massive Bounty Hunter employed by the Baron to pacify Vardaros; his defeat of Captain Quaid broke the people's will. When Anthony goes to assert his power he brings the Collector back into service.

• The Brute: He's a big fella and works as the muscle to whoever is willing to pay. In a fight, he completely lays out Rapunzel and her friends with his gadgets and brute strength.
• Bounty Hunter: He's referred to as this by Anthony the Weasel. The Collector takes jobs for pay by the crime bosses.
• Only in It for the Money: Unlike the rest of the Baron's men, the Collector isn't necessarily part of the gang and seemingly has no interest in who's running things. So long as he's paid, he'll work.
• Silent Antagonist: Outside of grunts and heavy breathing, the Collector doesn't speak.

• Disc-One Final Boss: Serves as this in the third and final season opener, as he's the first villain Rapunzel faces before she battles Cassandra.
• Embarrassing First Name: His real name is Hubert.
• Hypocrite: He warns Varian not to "get on the wrong side of history"... in spite of the fact that he and his followers are actively rebelling against history, attempting to reignite a war that ended peacefully years ago.
• Knight of Cerebus: Despite being somewhat Laughably Evil, his plan in "Rapunzel's Return" to destroy Corona and everyone in it while making the amnesiac King and Queen watch is quite dark.
• Laughably Evil: So Pretty Boy Even the Guys Want Him, leads a band of Saporians who could be described as New Age thugs, any mention that he could conquer Corona is meet with derisive laughter... until he does. He is also the first villain who tries to stab Cassandra In the Back, lets Varian, a teenage boy, drop to his death, and tries to reduce the whole Kingdom to ashes with all the population, asking for a pause to really "live this moment".
• Starter Villain: He and his Saporian allies along with Varian serve as this for Season 3 in "Rapunzel's Return".

• Paper Tiger: She looks and acts a big game, but she's a coward the moment she's cornered without her weapons. Even before the thrashing the werewolf gives her, Creighton runs away from a fight with Eugene the moment she's disarmed.
• Van Helsing Hate Crimes: Despite her at first seeming to have a point about the werewolf being dangerous, Rapunzel never gives Creighton the time of day because the werewolf is one of her subjects. It soon becomes clear Rapunzel was right, as by the end of the episode the werewolf is far more sympathetic, yet Creighton wants to hunt it just for the sake of hunting it because it's not strictly human any more (even preying on the desire to end the curse to bait a trap).
  Rapunzel: Leave the girl alone!
  Creighton: She ain't a girl any more, she's a monster! And the sooner you realize that the better!
• Would Hurt a Child: Eventually discovers that the werewolf is Red / Catalina, a girl who's little more than an adolescent at best. Creighton still wants her on the other end of a crossbow.

Sir Mericles

A circusmaster and the owner of The Phoenix Candor.

• Bad Boss: Cruelly abuses Candor's magic to win money with the circus.
• Genre Savvy: When Rapunzel declares she will free Candor from him, he quickly makes Candor conjure an illusion of itself to thwart Rapunzel.
• Kick the Dog: Once Rapunzel frees Candor, Sir Mericles declares that he will capture it again and make it do magic twice as hard.

• Brains and Brawn: As usual with the Big Guy, Little Guy, Shorter Means Smarter. Also discussed between Eugene and Cirus, the tall one, while Cyrus forces Eugene to Walk the Plank:

  Cyrus: Hey, I smart too. You don't have to be insulting. I realize we're criminals, but we still have feelings, y'know.

• For the Evulz: When The Late-Night Bandits ambush Stan and Eugene, they neutralize Stan with a Tap on the Head, and if they wanted, they would have killed him and Eugene, but they prefer to go to a bridge and force Eugene to Walk the Plank for no other reason than because it seems a Cool and Unusual Punishment.
• Political Overcorrectness: Eugene's answer when Cyrus objects Eugene disrespectfully invoking of the Brains and Brawn trope, while Cyrus forces Eugene to Walk the Plank.
• Samus Is a Girl: The success of their ambush.
• Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Stan and Eugene are patrolling the forest when a girl asks them for help because the Late-Night bandits had assaulted her. She is one of them.
