The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

It can be Hindsight and OBC, but I don't know if the entire show is OBC, because even putting the time limit aside, most people aren't identifying Tuca & Bertie as "the show with an alleged sex criminal."

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I saw someone bring this up for Destroy All Humans! 2 ages ago elsewhere but I was curious if it would count as a valid entry or a stretch, or potentially controversial. Or there might be context missing because the series has a ton of historical injokes.

  • Scanning hippies in Bay City might cause them to quip that the best thing about feminism is that "the gains we've made can never be rolled back by reactionary wingnuts". In 2022, the US Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, which was widely seen as a blow to women's rights.

Found this on HarsherInHindsight.Film:

  • Film/Grease: The ending of the movie version, in which Danny and Sandy get into a restored Greased Lightning and seem to fly off into the sky was already a head-scratcher, which led some fans to theorize that Sandy had actually drowned at the beginning, the movie was her Dying Dream, and her and Danny flying away marks her "moving on". After her actress, Olivia Newton-John, passed away from cancer in 2022, that scene (not to mention the whole "Sandy is dead" theory), becomes somewhat tragic; not helped by Sandy waving goodbye to her friends (and the audience) in the last scene.

[up]That sounds like some serious Fanon (and I'm not sure there is a more stereotypical case of it than "they were dead the whole time").

I don't think Fanon applies to the hindsight tropes anyways.

[up]There's shoehorning and then there's the insane gymnastics required to make whatever that is up there fit. In one movie he wields a baseball bat, which becomes funny because he was later in Batman (named after the flying mammal)??

I say cut them all.

Saw some on YMMV.Postal 2.

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Paradise getting nuked may be harder to ponder after a deadly fire mostly destroyed a town of the same name in northern California in November 2018, followed by a flash flood hitting the region.

Might just be a coincidence? The Paradise the game's set in is in Nevada.

  • You have the option to kill Gary Coleman (canonically, he dies whether or not you kill him), which, if you killed him, has the Postal Dude ask his wife how much an autographed book can sell for. Remember this game did star Gary himself, and was made before his death. The Paradise Lost expansion shows that he got better, even leading a cult of midget miners against the "tall ones"... for him to die again.

I believe this is actor mortality.

  • There’s a sign in the mall reading: “Closed for Renovations, reopening June 2016.” That very month, Christina Grimmie was murdered at an autograph signing in Orlando.

Unsure.

Leaning on keep.

  • The very inclusion of journalist and provocateur Milo Yiannopolous as an NPC in Paradise Lost is seen this way years later, after he caused further controversy for making many racist and sexist comments, before his career ended due to making comments endorsing pedophilia and harassment of Leslie Jones. This eventually got him banned from Twitter, costed him his book deal, and drove away his support base of conservative gamers. These days, Yiannopolous is bankrupt and claims that he is no longer gay.

Remaining as neutral as possible, this isn't hindsight.

From YMMV.Pokemon Insurgence:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Zenith's ultimate plan involves fabricating an epidemic and treating people with "vaccines" meant to mind-control them. While it's already a heinous plan, the whole thing feels eerily similar to what many a conspiracy theorist and anti-vaxxer would be claiming about the COVID-19 Pandemic much later.

Is it appropriate to put conspiracy theories in here? Isn't this a ROCEJ violation?

Might go through all the Yakuza pages. here's the examples for PS 2 Yakuza 1:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In her dying moments, Yumi tells Haruka to not run away, because her happiness will slip away. In 6, her running away is a major driving force of the game's plot, where her beloved father figure Kiryu chooses to disappear from her life by Faking the Dead after the game's events to protect her, though his reasons are not exactly connected to her running away. Not sure about this one.
    • When Sega was promoting the All-Star Cast featured in the English dub through interviews with the voice actors, Michael Madsen expressed that he wanted his character Futoshi Shimano to return in the sequel in an important role, perhaps joking the game would be called "The Revenge of Shimano" considering the character is killed late in the game. Come Yakuza 2, Shimano indeed appears in a flashback segment, playing an important part of the plot, except with none of the English voice cast returning to reprise their roles. This one is a meta bit. I don't think we do those for these tropes? But I'm not sure.
    • The thrashing that Shangri-La endures in this game (as well as revisiting it in Yakuza 2 and Yakuza 6 in its state of disrepair) is this with Yakuza: Like a Dragon revealing that it was Ichiban's childhood home. Seems like it counts here, unless "thing happens, retconned to have serious implications on another character previously unmentioned" in general doesn't count. Keep?
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: In Kiryu's confrontation with Majima at Shangri-La, Majima kidnaps a call-girl and offers her to be his moll. She refuses, because she's already engaged. Majima is shocked, proceeds to let her go without harming her. Though easily attributed to Majima being a Mood-Swinger, this scene becomes all the more poignant in Yakuza 0, where it is revealed that Majima chose to sacrifice a future with Makoto Makimura, the girl he saved and fell in love with, so she could have a safe future with her doctor who too had fallen for her. This is especially so due to Majima being at his most villainous in this game. Seems completely random. Cut?

Found this in Stand by Me:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the book, Gordie mentions a trip to NYC in the late 1970s/early 1980s. He mentions touring the Empire State Building, and says "Fuck the World Trade Center, the building King Kong climbed will always be the tallest to me." Fast forward two decades...

Is the simple mention of the WTC enough to characterize this trope?

Found this on Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Stone Ocean

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The carrier bird being named "Savage Garden" simply passed everyone's radar... until "I Want You" was used as the ending theme for the Part 4 anime. Made even more apparent by the fact that the band Savage Garden is mostly affiliated with JJBA these days because of it.
    • Foo Fighters was a mass of plankton pretending to be a human. 7 years later, Foo Fighters releases a song named "The Pretender".
    • A rather memetic example of this is the suicidal janitor Thunder McQueen, who while named after fashion designer Alexander McQueen, also has a name strikingly similar to Lightning McQueen, whose movie actually released several years after Stone Ocean.
    • Jolyne's best friend is Ermes Costello. A few years after Stone Ocean, Percy Jackson and the Olympians released, which has a main character named Luke Castellan who is the son of the god Hermes.
    • Jotaro's canon daughter having a Stand with the power to unravel her body into string becomes a lot funnier when taking the infamous JoJo's Bizarre Married Life doujin by CLAMP from six years earlier into consideration, where Jotaro's son with Kakyoin also has a Stand that can unravel itself. Made even funnier by the fact that Stone Free has a random trait of smelling like soap, whereas in the doujin, Jotaro named his son's Stand after a brand of soap.
    • Prior to the anime's announcement, the most iconic animated adaptation of Stone Ocean was a Japanese fan animation in the style of the opening to Neon Genesis Evangelion, complete with "A Cruel Angel's Thesis". A few months after the anime was announced, and at least thirteen (likely more) years after the original animation was uploaded, Jolyne's anime voice actress would do a cover of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" alongside fellow voice actress Yo Taichi.
      • In addition, the official posting of the main theme of the anime was exactly 13 years after the most famous YouTube upload (linked above).
    • Originally, in Eyes of Heaven, Pucci was voiced by Joji Nakata, who's known for playing fellow Sinister Minister Kirei Kotomine. Come the anime adaptation, and Pucci is now revealed to be voiced by Tomokazu Seki, who's best known for playing Koto's partner-in-crime, Gilgamesh. And before that, he was voiced by Show Hayami, who was Tokiomi Tohsaka, the liaison between Kotomine and Gilgamesh.
    • According to the English dub, the universe begins and ends with Yong, as the fact that Jonathan Joestar was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch is now coupled with Enrico Pucci being voiced by Yong Yea.
    • Limp Bizkit has the power to resurrect invisible zombies. And come 2021, the same year that Stone Ocean's anime adaptation was released, the Stand's namesake, which had been dead for 10 years and largely invisible to the masses, was suddenly brought back from the dead.
    • Pucci being a Catholic priest becomes pretty apropos when realizing that JOESTAR The Inherited Soul, the event which first announced the anime adaptation of Stone Ocean, premiered on April 4, 2021, which on that year, was Easter Sunday.
    • The second batch of episodes for the anime was set to release on September 1, 2022, which was four days before NASA initially planned to launch the Artemis I spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, the exact location where the final act of Stone Ocean takes place. There were even reports of the countdown clock being frozen in time, as if Jotaro had been using Star Platinum: The World.

  • The carrier bird being named "Savage Garden" simply passed everyone's radar... until "I Want You" was used as the ending theme for the Part 4 anime. Made even more apparent by the fact that the band Savage Garden is mostly affiliated with JJBA these days because of it.
  • A rather memetic example of this is the suicidal janitor Thunder Mc Queen, who while named after fashion designer Alexander Mc Queen, also has a name strikingly similar to Lightning Mc Queen, whose movie actually released several years after Stone Ocean.

I'd say to keep these, albeit move the Mc Queen one to Harsher in Hindsight. I have seen jokes about the other two.

  • Jotaro's canon daughter having a Stand with the power to unravel her body into string becomes a lot funnier when taking the infamous Jo Jo's Bizarre Married Life doujin by CLAMP from six years earlier into consideration, where Jotaro's son with Kakyoin also has a Stand that can unravel itself. Made even funnier by the fact that Stone Free has a random trait of smelling like soap, whereas in the doujin, Jotaro named his son's Stand after a brand of soap.

This one's issue is misuse because it really should be on the Jojo's Bizarre Married Life page, if it exists, but the phenomenon is correct albeit backwards.
