YMMV / The Try Guys

Go To

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The Try Guys are definitely the most well known for their videos where they strip off and try on different kinds of underwear or costumes. In recent years the amount of videos like these have lessened compared to how many they produced at the start of their fame over on Buzzfeed however the impact of those earlier videos has stayed with them all this time.
  • Broken Base: The Try Guys fans were very split over the guys' choice to have the 2022 Without A Recipe finale be put behind a paywall and not uploaded online afterwards. Some of the fans are adamant that the guys should be able to charge for whatever they want, especially as they're running a business. Other fans feel that the guys have priced many fans out of being able to enjoy the finale and it isn't fair to charge to view it when the rest of the WAR season had been released for free. The growing consensus is that the Try Guys should be allowed to charge money for some of their content but choosing the WAR finale was in poor taste.
  • Common Knowledge: Though he has a reputation for being good at everything, Eugene himself has pointed out several occasions where he's lost various games and competitions (and even a casual viewer of Without a Recipe or Without Instructions will know his success is never guaranteed).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Eugene's dad, starting from the Fatherhood series.
    • Jamie, the rank kid, who first appeared in Eugene's ranking cereal, and then appeared as a judge twice in "Without a Recipe." His wise-beyond-his-years sarcasm, bond with Eugene and perfect shade throwing have made him a fan-favourite.
    • Kwesi James and Johnny Cakes who have both been guest judges on Without A Recipe. The fans latched onto them immediately and the guys also loved working with them, so much so that they both now make regular appearances in videos.
  • Fan Community Nicknames: Try Guys fans have been lovingly dubbed Tryceratops.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: The Try Guys are guys who try things, despite doing one sponsored video on the topic they are NOT "internet pranksters". Many news outlets have dubbed them as being a prank channel, particularly in news coverage in late 2022, needless to say fans of the group and even MatPat himself will correct anyone who makes this mistake.
  • Fandom VIP: Maddy, a YouTuber whose compilation videos of the Try Guy's content were well known throughout the fandom. She was later taken on by the guys themselves and the channel rebranded as Second Try.
  • Friendly Fandoms: In a roundabout way, with fans of Saturday Night Live as both fans of SNL and the Try Guys came together to lambast SNL's Shallow Parody of the Guys' statement on Ned's cheating scandal and subsequent removal from the company with both groups calling out just how much the skit got wrong and how its meanspirited portrayal of the guys as Attention Whores trying to use the scandal for clout despite their measured and mature real life handling of the situation was extremely tasteless. Unsurprisingly, the writer of that SNL skit is a friend of Ned’s.
    • Many Try Guys fans have also become fans of the film NIMONA (2023) and have gone on to follow the webcomic it's based on due to Eugene's involvement as the voice actor for Goldenloin. Likewise fans of NIMONA have begun to follow Eugene and the Try Guys, helped by the coverage of the movie on their channel.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The final video released before Ned's cheating scandal became public was "Try Guys Try High Diving" with Ned's final on-screen appearance being belly flopping into the pool and out of sight. All subsequent appearances were cut from the video backlog entirely.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In "The Try Guys Try Drag", Ned's drag persona Champagne Canne wore, among other things, a tutu, earrings, and a cowboy hat. Four years later, in "The Try Guys Get Makeovers From Little Girls", Ned's partner Lilly picked out an outfit for him that included a tutu, earrings, and a cowboy hat.
    • Ned being weirded out by Fifty Shades of Grey in the BDSM video is funnier now that, a few years later, he's seen the movies and is a big enough fan to get any references to it.
  • Ho Yay:
    • A Blink-and-You-Miss-It moment in "Try Guys Taste Test Jerky" where Ned and Eugene can be seen sleeping leaning in each other.
    • Eugene has said that Zach and Keith have been mistaken for a couple many times, and described them as "straight guys who love kissing up on each other".
  • LGBT Fanbase: A lot of LGBT+ people enjoy watching the guys content both because of Eugene being openly gay himself and the other guys being allies who are unafraid to challenge sterotypes.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Many users online use images from of Zach dressed as a vagina in one of the early costume episodes, even users who aren't in or haven't heard of the Try Guys fanbase!
    • Clingsberry Crunch.note
  • Nightmare Fuel: "The Try Guys Get Kidnapped"—while there are some funny, heartwarming and awesome moments, the video was still kind of scary. The guys note that even though the whole thing was a simulation (so they were never in any actual danger), it was still pretty scary and kidnapping is a very real thing that happens to people—while it may not be something they think about, it's still something that could potentially happen to pretty much anyone (Keith even admits that when he was a kid, he sometimes had nightmares about getting kidnapped).
    • While funny in the moment, Zach's Wrong Genre Savvy about being tortured by kidnappers and his bravado throughout the video is made chilling at the end when one of the simulation kidnappers states that if it had been a real kidnapping he very likely would have killed Zach to make an example.
  • Offending the Creator's Own: Debatable given that Ned's DNA results revealed he's actually only 18% Italian and he has no real ties to the country or its culture. Regardless, whenever Ned attempted to cook Italian dishes on Without A Recipe or No Recipe Roadtrip fans from the country were quick to point out his various mispronunciations of Italian words and chided him for his lack of real knowledge of Italy and its cuisine. Some Italian fans have even gone as far as to say that Ned's actions and behaviour are outright racist.
  • Pandering to the Base: The guys have been very open about how their content pivoting from trying various things to primarily food related videos is because the latter performs better and is more likely to be watched by existing fans and new viewers alike.
  • Presumed Flop: While many fans were quick to assume that the No Recipe Roadtrip series flopped due to getting overshadowed by Ned's removal and being moved to a different timeslot, the show was incredibly well received and has high ratings and reviews across various platforms, including a 100% Fresh result on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Viewer Name Confusion:
    • Even fans of the show can get confused attempting to spell Zach and Keith's last names. A couple of videos even point out the numerous variations and misspellings of Zach's surname and how much it irks him.
    • When the guys were starting out on Buzzfeed viewers would constantly get Zach, Keith, and Ned mixed up due to them all being white Americans.
  • The Woobie: Zach can come off as one due to his insecurities and chronic illness. Eugene, too, when talking about growing up as a Queer Asian in Texas.
