Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

This is my first EP in a long time. Another Dragalia Lost character. This is Valyx. I put quite a bit of effort into this one.

Who is Valyx?

Valyx is a member of the Alberian Royal Family, being its fourth scion. He's a Four-Star Badass who's willing to Abdicate the Throne in favor of helping the common people. This is because he believes a royal's duty is to protect the weak, no matter what.

Magnificence?

After a battle against the villain Nedrick, Valyx's military skills were pointed out in a moment of Villain Respect, with Nedrick going as far as to say, "Your troops fight with both great fury and unmatched discipline, and your military mind is keen." He even compliments Valyx for inspiring Undying Loyalty in his men. Later in the story, when Nedrick announces his plan to give everyone in Grastaea the ability to forge a pact with dragons, Valyx notes how much of a bad idea this is by pointing out the reason why dragon pacts are so rare is because most people would succumb to With Great Power Comes Great Insanity. This shows that Valyx knows how his world works and has reliable knowledge on dragons. He forged a pact with Thor (no, not the one from Dragalia Lost Kindred Ties; that's Thórr), known as The Fulminator. It's revealed in Thor's Dragon Story that Valyx is a Determinator who was willing to risk his life, despite having the reputation of being average compared to his older siblings. He gained Thor's respect by Staring Down Cthulhu. Valyx is A Father to His Men who gets mad when one of them is traumatized, ordering them to find and kill whoever did this. At the end of his first encounter with the heroes Valyx leaves, saying that his men are tired, showing that he does Know When to Fold 'Em. In his Adventurer Story, he has to defeat and capture a former king who's The Caligula named Galkin. Galkin is in the mountains, where his forces can see a raid coming and counter it. Valyx gets the idea to transform and fly over there from an altitude that they can't see him coming from, so he can weaken the enemy forces, ensuring no casualties. This Element of Surprise keeps them from using their Deadly Gas that's being used to threaten innocent lives.

In one of Malora's Adventurer Stories, his very presence is shown to motivate the imperial soldiers to do better since they know he doesn't mess around. Upon confronting Malora herself, Valyx makes it clear that he's Not Distracted by the Sexy and he doesn't care that she's a Ms. Fanservice since he knows she works for Euden to at least some extent. When Malora explains her situation (she has to retrieve a Tragic Keepsake necklace for someone that was stolen), he gives her until sunset and warns her that if she tries to escape, he'll know since he's now keeping tabs on her, and then he'll kill her himself (since she claims that she can seduce whatever guards would otherwise watch her cell). This knowledge of her constant location proves valuable when he has to save her from the man who has the necklace.

Is he a Bastard? Too much?

He still manages to be one. In his debut chapter, he tests The Hero Euden's ability to be worthy of surviving his judgement. He argues by saying the heroes' place, known as the Halidom, might end up as a haven for bandits or even a force to directly oppose The Empire. While Euden passed the test, Valyx made it clear that he would've committed Sibling Murder if Euden lacked the faith of the people who defended him. This makes Valyx into a Sink or Swim Mentor since All-Loving Hero Euden has to adapt or die. During a conversation with the Knight in Shining Armor Leif, Valyx deduced that Leif was trying to join Euden despite a lack of confession, and threatened to kill him if they ever met on the battlefield.

Any Mitigating Factors?

This is where things get tricky. His Adventurer Story reveals that he was Forced into Evil when he learned that his father, The Good King Aurelius was suffering from Demonic Possession. Valyx wanted to start a rebellion, but the demon Morsayati warned him that even if he won against him, the collateral damage would result in a Pyrrhic Victory, making the whole thing not worth it. Valyx thought about his situation and chose to serve The Empire... on the condition that he personally leads their main military force. This doesn't completely stop their Rape, Pillage, and Burn tendencies, but it does lessen it by a good deal. Also, despite having to choose the Lesser of Two Evils, Valyx still does bad things willingly. His attack on the Halidom, a Place of Protection, would've endangered many innocent lives under his orders. He also made it clear that he may one day kill Leif, who's seen as The Paragon in-universe, citing the fact that he's become an enemy of The Empire. When Empress Zethia (Morsayati in another body) attempts to recruit the royal siblings, Valyx joins her, saying her rule is peaceful in its own way. When Euden refuses, Morsayati tries to sic his siblings on him, and it's clear that Valyx would've complied. He does get to pull a Heel–Face Turn very late in the story and learns to think for himself in The Blood That Binds. Throughout the story, it's made clear that despite a Sadistic Choice, Valyx had still enough freedom over his actions to do both good and bad. Morsayati even says, "You may do as you wish, so long as it does not interfere with my will." He's a disciplined character who thinks things through, even if he has to make unsavory decisions.

Final Verdict

Does he count? Up to you.

By the way, I've got a write-up for Sonic GT done. I worry it's a little over-descriptive (this is literally my first time) since the game itself is, again, completable within an hour. Hence, feel free to give me feedback or even offer to rewrite it if you wish.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog Fan Game Sonic GT: Dr. Eggman, once again playing the role of Arch-Enemy to Sonic and his friends, plans to reverse-engineer the highly durable shell of Mighty the Armadillo to create a new line of "ultra-heavy" Badniks for the sake of proving his superiority once and for all. To achieve this, he kidnaps Mighty's best friend Ray the Flying Squirrel and sends the armadillo a ransom note to come to the Ocean Paradise, where he's set up an ambush of robots that promptly overwhelm and restrain Mighty, and ensure that at least a sample of Mighty's shell is collected for the doctor's use. As anticipated by Eggman, the nearby Sonic and Tails soon find and rescue Mighty, and promptly agree to help him in his search for where Ray is being kept. When the three eventually track down Eggman's pyramid base and find Ray, the doctor reveals that he's already used the sample of Mighty's shell to complete a near-invulnerable superweapon called the Hard Boiled EGG Tank, and promptly begins a "test" that involves using it to defeat Sonic and Mighty. Despite giving an expression of shock and disbelief when Sonic and Mighty succeed in destroying it, Eggman quickly regains his composure and makes his escape, leaving Metal Sonic behind to seemingly deal with any of the heroes that stick around.

In related news, I've collected some quotes to possibly use for Rouge and Eggman's canon incarnations. I have also tried proposing these specific Eggman quotes before, but I didn't get enough of a yes/no response to confidently add them to the drafts page. Without further ado:

Quote A: the first verse and pre-chorus of Rouge's theme from her debut game— describes her stealthy approach and choice to do things her own way, and how she doesn't care what challenges she has to go through so long as she keeps her freedom:

Tap the rhythm against the floor
To look for another door
I am slipping into the mystery of the night
I know there is an easier way
But it is my choice anyway
Don't let me waste my time in futile thinking anymore
Fated not to be tamed
Watch me, I never will lean upon you
I can go by myself
— "Fly in the Freedom", theme of Rouge the Bat from Sonic Adventure 2

Quote B: the second chorus of her theme— alludes to her investigative skills, describes her willingness to get her hands dirty ("gamble") even in the case of uncertainty, and reaffirms how she does things on her own terms for herself rather than wait for "time" to give her a reason to act:

(Fly in the freedom!) Time never stop and wait for me
(Show the way!) Looking for answers, and looking for the clue
(Fly in the freedom!) There is a lot of things to do
Come on, I'm ready to gamble, it's time to play the game!
— "Fly in the Freedom", theme of Rouge the Bat from Sonic Adventure 2

Quote C pretty much summarizes half of Eggman's MB entry for Lost World:

"I needed some 'alone time' to supercharge my mech after you got me past the Zeti. Faking my death was the perfect way. And now, my ultimate weapon is complete! Finally, with the energy collected from the Extractor, I can rule the world! Pity about the damage done down there, but there's still enough left for me to conquer."
Dr. Eggman, Sonic Lost World

Quote D caps off all the other backup plans he had in Forces:

"Gotcha! The fortress reactor was just a decoy! A true winner always keeps his trump card hidden until the end."
Dr. Eggman, Sonic Forces

EDIT: [tup] to the Just Add Magic quote. Missed it, sorry.

So, let's say that someone creates a song about a pre-existing movie character painting them as a Magnificent Bastard... can they be EP'ed? The character the song is about isn't an MB (yet) and based on thread rules, I can't actually EP them till April 28th. That being said, they are definitely Crazy Awesome

Full disclosure, the song mostly recaps his actions throughout the series, but I think the "song" element gives it enough creativity wise.

Here's one of two more Sentai candidates I have in mind.

What is the work?

Choushinsei Flashman, the 10th installment in the Super Sentai franchise.

20 years before the series began, 5 babies were abducted from Earth by a team of mercenaries called the "Alien Hunters" at the behest of the Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess, who sought to harvest the genetic material from those babies for their experiments with DNA.

However, the five babies were saved by an alien race known as the Flash and brought to the Flash system in order to train. There they were raised into the Flashmen so that they could one day return to Earth and defend it from the Mess when they invaded.

Who is Sir Cowler? What does he do?

Sir Cowler is a badass mercenary in the employ of Mess, who leads a team of space Hired Guns called the "Alien Hunters". In the past, his Alien Hunters were the ones who abducted the Flashmen from Earth on order of Mess. He later comes to Earth himself after hearing of the Flashman's reputation, seeking to challenge them himself.

Cowler assists the Mess in several of their schemes, all while dropping cryptic hints and taunts to the Flashmen about who their parents are. At the same, friction begins to arise in Mess as Cowler develops a rivalry with Mess's Evil Genius, Lee Keflen, with the two often competing on schemes.

Later on, Ra Deus and Keflen attempt to sacrifice Cowler's Alien Hunters by feeding them to a Beast Warrior to power it up. Outraged, Cowler rebels against Mess and attempts to save his remaining men. Unfortunately for him, Ra Deus has his three surviving hunters mutated and fused into a Beast Warrior in another scheme to defeat the Flashmen. However, Cowler receives new help when his right-hand man Bo Gardan arrives on Earth to help his boss. The two kidnap Dr. Tokimura, a scientist allied with the Flashmen, and make him build a second Gene Synthesizer for them. However, Tokimura escapes, resulting in Gardan going out to search for him. It's at this point that he, alone is abducted by the Mess and mutated into another Beast Warrior, The Gardess.

The Gardess is sent down to Earth to fight the Flashmen, but Gardan is able to regain himself through sheer willpower and join back up with Cowler. Cowler then uses the Gene Synthesizer to weaken Ra Deus, before he and Bo Gardan infiltrate the Mess's Laboh spaceship and (seemingly) destroy Ra Deus themselves.

Cowler and Gardan then head back down to Earth to face the Flashmen again. Bo Gardan is mutated back into a Beast Warrior and killed, while Cowler faces Red Flash in a one-on-one duel. Red Flash fatally wounds Cowler, who uses his final moments to reveal to Sara/Yellow Flash that she is the daughter of Dr. Tokimura, right before piloting his own ship in a suicde attack on the Laboh that leaves it crippled and unable to fly.

Is he magnificent?

Cowler is a slick bounty hunter who's always ready for a fight and cool at all times. Every time he faces the Flashmen he keeps them on their toes, and is definitely one of their most formidable opponents. At the same time he's A Father to His Men who cares about the Alien Hunters under his command, and who goes as far as rebelling against the Mess when they throw them under the bus. He manages to devise and pull off a pretty effective counterattack in a relatively short amount of time, and ultimately gets to Ra Deus and (temporarily) defeats him before the Flashmen do.

Compared to the other villains, Cowler is the only one who could really qualify. Ra Deus is an egotistical Complete Monster whose relentless throwing of his subordinates under the bus eventually does him in, and Keflen is an Opportunistic Bastard whose "plan" was essentially just to wait for Cowler and then the Flashmen to off Ra Deus for him, and who's very quickly dealt with after.

Is he a bastard? Too much?

He's a mercenary who will kidnap babies if he's paid enough. At the same time, he has enough redeeming traits to balance out his more distasteful ones, and he never goes into territory that would make him truly revolting. He does come off as dickish when he goes out of his way to try and stop the Flashmen from figuring out who their parents are, though he ultimately redeems himself in that regard by showing Sara she's the daughter of Dr. Tokimura.

Final Verdict

[tup] Cowler's so so magnicient he was one of the roles that helped put Joji Nakata on the map as an actor.

Just imagine something here.

Everyone, I bring depressing news. Dragalia Lost is set to shut down by the end of the year, which will drastically limit how many more effort posts I can do for this game. The reason why I chose to do so many is because I wanted to introduce tropers to this world in an instance of TV Tropes as a Gateway Drug. Now I can't shill the game as much anymore. Anyway, Here's my write-up for Valyx.

Valyx is the fourth scion of the Alberian Royal Family and general of the main Dyrenell Imperial Army. After confronting Emperor Aurelius about the empire's wanton cruelty, Valyx reluctantly joined the effort under the condition of personally supervising imperial activities. Upon learning that Euden has established the Halidom as a safe haven for those under the empire's oppression, Valyx pushes him to become worthy of the title of royalty by gaining the people's faith lest he fall to the empire's might. Valyx is disciplined enough to resist sexual advances and prioritizes the safety of all of his troops, gaining their undying respect and admiration. A military genius and A Father to His Men, Valyx embodies the responsibility that comes with being a member of royalty.
