The Boy Behind the Hands is a Super Smash Bros. story written by Writer Of Worlds, and inspired by Gnoggin's video, Smash is Autistic.

A boy with Asperger's named Matt Jones struggles with everyday life, with his only friends: his Nintendo toys which he plays with. As the young boy grows up, so does the pain that is inside him: Master Core. Takes place from Super Smash Bros. 64 to Super Smash Brosfor Nintendo 3 D Sand Wii U.

This story contains the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: While Matt's mother, Maria, tries to be understanding of her son, his father, Johnathan, sees him as more of a problem to solve than his own child. He destroys Pichu and tosses Mewtwo and Dr. Mario out the window as punishment for Matt after he was suspended from school over a fight, and eventually leaves the family when Matt starts 11th grade. He realize his mistakes years later and apologizes to Matt for his actions.
  • Art Evolution: The first eight chapters are not something to write home about, but come chapter 9, and it is clear that the author has improved.
  • Big Bad: Master Core, as it's taking over Matt as he goes through difficulties in his life.
  • Birthday Episode: Chapter 12.
  • The Bully: Two, Skipper and Nick. It isn't until chapter 7 when Matt taught them a lesson that they finally leave him alone.
  • Character Death: How many of the cut characters were cut. Roy was accidentally smashed by Principal Taylor (he gets better as a new toy), Pichu was destroyed during Johnathan's rage, and the cut characters in Smash 4 sans Lucas were destroyed during Logan's robbery.
  • Disappeared Dad: Zoey's father is killed in a car crash.
    • Matt's father, Johnathan, later in the story.
  • Driven to Suicide: Due to years of emotional buildup over his diagnosis, the difficulties he went through in his life because of his Asperger's, and Johnathan's Wham Line, Matt eventually slits his wrists to kill himself. He survives thanks to his toys defeating Master Core and Zoey's timely intervention.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After surviving his suicide attempt, Matt finally accepts his Asperger's, along with his friends, and eventually marries Zoey and they have a little girl named Amanda, who shares Matt's Asperger's and love for anything Nintendo.
  • False Friend: Downplayed, as Logan isn't really evil; he is just trying to get away from his abusive home and save his sister. Alas, he has betrayed Matt and took Snake, Pokemon Trainer and his Pokemon minus Charizard, Ice Climbers, and Wolf so he could sell them off after his failed robbery.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Amanda, Matt and Zoey's daughter, appears in the final chapter.
  • Living Toys: Downplayed, as Matt's toys are only alive to him.
  • Running Gag: Smash R' Us, the obvious parody of Toys R' Us, is referenced multiple times in the fanfic.
  • Vacation Episode: Chapter 5 has Matt and his parents go to Tokyo for vacation.
  • Wham Line: "Why don't you act normal for once?!"
