Trivia / The Runaway Guys

Go To

  • Approval of God:
    • ProtonJon and NintendoCapriSun (and SuperMCGamer) are members of the TRG Discord Fan Server. Chuggaaconroy and other TRG guests know of the server and have recorded video messages to greet the server at conventions.
    • All three main Guys are big fans of the ''Classic TRGXU Clips'' (formerly known as "TheRunawayGuys Out of Context") Twitter account, and often retweet their posts.
  • Based on a Dream: Two dreams Stephen had became inspirations for bumpers.
    • One of Stephen and Tom's bumpers during TRG Colosseum 2022 has Stephen asking Tom to make a Morning Mario video for him, but instead of a Mario Maker level, Tom shows snowboarding tips; when Stephen calls Tom out on this, the latter insists that he "took a few liberties".
    • Stephen also had a dream that featured FamilyJules having fun on escalators. This idea was also incorporated into a bumper for TRG Colosseum 2022, in which Jules rides the escalators in a random store and poses on them.
  • Colbert Bump:
    • A few of the guest players, like JoshJepson and Super Jeenius get more popularity after appearing in a TRG Let's Play.
    • Judging by the comments of this video, a lot of people heard of The Brothers Flub and its infamous theme song after Chugga mentioned it in Episode 12 of the Super Metroid playthrough.
    • FamilyJules, ToxicxEternity, and Adrisaurus have gained attention thanks to the first Colosseum.
    • As did The 8-Bit Drummer, InsaneInTheRainMusic, and Sab Irene after the second Colosseum.
    • The infamous playthrough of Dokapon Kingdom is probably the most exposure the Dokapon series has ever gotten.
  • Corpsing:
    • During the iconic "Sinister Elmo" moment, Emile couldn't keep the voice going for long before bursting into laughter.
    • Chugga cannot contain himself after nicknaming the Shaktool Buzzsaw Man Pants, especially not after Jon notes how stupid that name is.
    • He also does this after Tim's singing to the tune of Lower Norfair gets stuck in his head.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: A couple of these happen during the Mario Party DS playthrough. Most prominently, the Guys assume that the Grab Bag item works the same as the Item Bag from Mario Party 3 and 4, giving three random items; in actuality, it always gives you the same three items (a Star Pipe, Block Sensor, and Triple Dice Set). As a result, the guys assume the item is bad and don't buy it when it would actually be a good idea.note  Also, Chugga states that, on the DK's Stone Statue board, you can only buy up to 5 stars at a time; in reality, you can buy as many stars as you have the coins for. This one is actually proven wrong during the game.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • In a 2011 interview, Jon admitted that he wasn't too proud of his behavior in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as he felt like he spent much of the game up to World 8 trying to kill Emile after falling victim to an incident that nearly gave him a black eye before recording started. This resulted in Jon channelling that resentment into the LP by actively targeting Emile at the behest of being a teammate to Tim and Josh, and being very confrontational and irritated overall. When the guys started playing through the sequel a few years later, Jon promised that he would try to avoid this behavior, so long as nobody draws first blood on him. In true TRG fashion, it doesn't last very long, but thankfully it also doesn't completely overtake his play style and only crops up every so often.
    • Chugga has admitted multiple times that he wasn't happy with how the Mario Party 3 project turned out. He's admitted the jokes at Jon's expense were mean-spirited and should have relented when he should, especially considering Jon was recovering from a nasty break-up with his ex. Reaffirmed in the Mario Party DS Let's Play, with Chugga saying it's one of the worst playthrough the Guys produced because everyone was in a bad mental spot; Jon's end of a five-year relationship (which he openly admitted in an episode) was just one of the several reasons.
    • As it continued on, Jon has mentioned openly hating the Dokapon Kingdom Let's Play because of people harassing him both in the comments and on social media about his choices, when in fact the episodes were recorded months in advance and he was already long behind his decisions, meaning there was nothing he could do about it. This toxicity eventually lead him to having a massive explosion and going into a scathing rant towards said people after he was pushed a bit too much about it on his personal streams, following the Arc Fatigue nearing episode 100.
    • In 2022, Jon admitted that he was enjoying TRG Colosseum less and less over the years, due to the pandemic severely limiting what the participants could do together, as well as the overall stress of trying to prepare for each event remotely weighing hard on him. It's since gotten to the point where Jon has been considering giving up on the event altogether.
    • The Guys don't seem to like remembering the first Thrown Controllers panel due to all the technical difficulties.
    • Nowadays, Jon regrets doing the Big the Cat impersonation and apologizes for doing so, to the point where he has completely forgotten how to do the voice a year later. He's surprised that more people liked it than he would have thought, though.
    • Jon vented about the Metroid Prime: Remastered LP during one of his own streams of Prime 2, not so much about Chugga's performance, but about how he was absolutely sick of all of the commenters who "had a stick up their ass" about the playthrough and sucking the fun out of exploration and learning through mistakes, which is the exact point of the game. Jon stated that it was getting to the point where Metroidvania games were far less likely to be done on the channel in the future, unless he was in charge.
  • Creator Breakdown: Around the time the Mario Party 3 playthrough was recorded, Jon broke up with his then-girlfriend, which contributed to his anger during that playthrough.
  • Falsely Advertised Accuracy: In the cutscene that comes after beating Petey Piranha, Chugga claims that the official name of the cannon Wario is seen with is the Dark Gun, when its actual name is the Dark Cannon.
  • Fandom Nod: During The Subspace Emissary LP, they make a nod to Chugga's Flanderized love of wearing polo shirts, which he even turns into a Cargo Ship moment. "STOP TRYING TO MAKE OUT WITH POLO SHIRTS!"note
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance:
    • The Guys have stressed a few times in later commentary that often the series they have the most fun recording tend to be glossed over or forgotten by viewers. Two examples they cite are the Rayman Origins and both of their LittleBigPlanet LPs.
    • Conversely, fans often tout the Big the Cat videos from Sonic Adventure to be the funniest content from TRG of all time thanks to Jon's off-the-wall performance as Big, whereas Jon considers it an Old Shame and has actively tried to forget how he did his Big voice.
  • Milestone Celebration: The Guys and Masae celebrated the 10 year anniversary of The Runaway Guys on February 5th, 2021 by revisiting Mario Party 3 and replaying their custom-made homebrew "TRG Land" board, revisiting Mario Party 6, and playing Muppets Party Cruise, all while having guests join in and talk about their experiences with the group.
  • Missing Episode: Episode 13 of LittleBigPlanet 2 was never uploaded because the recording got corrupted.
    • As of March 8th, 2018, a number of videos from certain projects have been set to private (6 of the 13 videos for Little Big Planet, 1 of the 9 vids for Smash Bros Brawl, 1 of the 79 vids for Fortune Street, and 9 of the 28 vids for Super Metroid). While Emile hasn't said why they were set to private, general consensus from the fans is it's something to do with YouTube's copyright content algorithms. As of November 24, 2018, after the first video of their A Link to the Past LP was uploaded, Emile made an announcement saying that due to said videos being made permanently private outside of his control and being unable to get them restored, he's going to re-upload them so they can be watched again (except for Part 1 of the Delfino Plaza board of Fortune Street, which was set to unlisted instead).
    • As of mid-October 2018, the Thrown Controllers stream from Momocon 2018 is still missing with no way for the guys to find it. They have reached out to fans and Momocon staff to see if it can be recovered. Footage was finally found and it was uploaded to the channel on February 26, 2019.
    • Jon revealed during a stream on November 15, 2019 that the weird video quality of the Kirby and the Amazing Mirror LP, Star Fox 64 LP, and the Super Mario Bros and Alefgard boards of Fortune Street was due to them being recorded onto a (unknown to them at the time) dying hard drive. While a chunk of the recorded footage was corrupted-yet-salvageable, Jon does say that two of the episodes were completely lost: notably footage from the EX Mode in Amazing Mirror.
    • Footage of Chugga's initial blind playthrough of Banjo-Kazooie after Rusty Bucket Bay had accidentally been deleted, so they had to re-record the rest of the game from that point. As a result, Episode 39 onwards would no longer be a blind playthrough.
    • A full playthrough of Super Mario Bros. Wonder was recorded and ready to start being uploaded just days before the allegations against Chugga blew up and resulted in TRG going into permanent hiatus. Even if the group does eventually resume work (sans Chugga and potentially under a new group name), the original playthrough will likely never see the light of day due to the complicated nature of the situation and Jon and Tim's feelings on it.
  • Never Work with Children or Animals: Emile's cat, Kirby (who passed away in 2023), frequently crashed TRG recordings, which was often commented upon by the guys themselves. Starting in 2017, Jon's cat, Bagel, also has a tendency to interrupt recordings.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: The T-pose bumper in Colosseum 2023 was pitched by a viewer of Stephen Georg's Twitch channel using a feature to submit ideas for bumpers. It was pitched in 2020, but it wouldn't come to fruition until nearly everyone could be in one place.
  • The Other Darrin: The guys could not get the original lamp from Colosseum 2018 to their new recording place, so they had to buy a new lamp for Colosseum 2019.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Emile, Masae, and Adriana are big fans of RWBY, with the latter even covering some of its songs on Jules' channel. In Colosseum Direct, they (alongside the rest of their friends) had the privilege of playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons with Lindsay Jones, voice of Ruby.
    • The fans in a sense as well: members of the Egg PAC got permission from Jon to make a bumper for TRG Colosseum 2021 and got to make another one the year after. As of 2022, the group is known as the CAB (Colosseum Animation Bunch).
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • The third and fourth Runaway Guys Colosseums don't have the various collaborators meeting up in one location owing to the COVID-19 Pandemic outbreak that had been occurring in 2020-2021.
    • The same virus mentioned above also forced the guys' main videos to change, as once they ran out of the backlog they had recorded in person, they needed to record and upload games done online as they couldn't visit each other.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Chuggaaconroy suffered this in January to February 2024 when allegations against him came out about him making fellow YouTubers deeply uncomfortable and violating their boundaries, including his former friends MasaeAnela and AntDude. These allegations (in addition to several others) were severe enough that both his own channel and The Runaway Guys have been put on indefinite hiatus, due to Chuggaa being so integral to both. Both ProtonJon and NintendoCapriSun have professionally distanced themselves from him after talking things over with Chugga, and do not condone his actions (though NCS is willing to hold Chugga accountable personally). TRG Colosseum is to undergo a rebranding before resuming operations, and Chugga (according to NCS) is receiving therapy to properly address his behavior, as well as remaining offline for an indefinite period of time under doctor's orders.
  • Schedule Slip:
    • Justified. After Globe Trot, the Wii Party LP was suddenly stopped in favor of beginning LittleBigPlanet, leading to a lot of people thinking that Wii Party had just been filler. As it turned out, it was its own Let's Play, and resumed after LittleBigPlanet ended.
    • Happened to Yoshi's Tropical Island (Mario Party) due to their hotel's unstable internet connection.
    • Jon has revealed that a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament was recorded at a convention in 2014, but the audio was lost and the Guys are still trying to reconstruct it from secondary recordings.
    • After the second round of Dokapon Kingdom, the next project was delayed due to multiple conventions such as ConBravo and Nerd HQ being so close together. Then Chugga got sick for three weeks after the two conventions causing another delay.
    • Dokapon Kingdom went on a year long hiatus after Episode 53 was uploaded. Apparently because all the live commentary audio for the next session was somehow lost while Emile was transferring everything to a new computer, despite having multiple backups, they had to record post-production commentary for Episodes 54-56.
    • Before starting the first game of Wheel of Fortune (Wii U), Jon laments that the game choice isn't very "Halloween-y" - the crew decide to play on the Halloween set to make things season-appropriate. The video was uploaded in January 2023.
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise: Although it's weird to call a fan mod "merchandise", while Emile played as QP for the first 10 games of 100% OJ, his later switch to Sumika was a Foregone Conclusion to anybody who'd seen and downloaded the 100% TRG mod of the game on Steam as the mod was further ahead than those videos beforehand.
  • Throw It In!:
    • The clip of FamilyJules spraying himself in the eye with hairspray during the Colosseum 2019 intro was off-script, but the take was used anyways in the final product.
    • The creation of the entire LORD DONA'TOR character was originally a spur of the moment gag Tom came up with when he happened to be wearing a bathrobe as he was entering the recording room.
    • Colosseum 2023’s “Tech Crew bumper” was completely unscripted. When Stephen came in to film it, the crew was still scrambling to get everything together. On a whim, Stephen decided to record the chaos Office-style; once MC and the others caught on to what he was doing, they rolled with it and started improvising, and thus the bumper was born.
  • Viral Marketing: According to Jon in a Retsutalk video, Nintendo actually contacted the guys to get them to promote New Super Mario Bros. 2, and even gave them prizes to give out.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Several channel names were considered: Splitscreen Shenanigans, Loud Players, Let's Play Crossover, and Press Start to LP. Then it's placed into humorous proportions as Chugga says:
Chugga: I got it! 'Press L to P!'
Jon: (tries to say something, then sighs) I hate you so much.
(funnily enough, a YouTube channel 1PressL2P, did take this humorous name and now makes TRG Best Moments and Top 10's!)
      • According to Jon in episode 12 of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, another name idea was "Shark Uppercut", which was literally something random Jon just thought up out of nowhere.
      • Variation in that it came after the fact: Chugga said he would have seriously pushed for Chain Attack as a channel name, had Xenoblade Chronicles 1 been released when they made the channel, due to there being three of them.
    • There was going to be a tenth player in the Mario Power Tennis tournament, but they dropped out.
    • They were going to have a guest player for Kirby's Return to Dream Land, but they couldn't make it because of a scheduling snafu. It's implied by a comment of Chugga's that the guest player was going to be JoshJepson.
    • According to Jon's Formspring, LP#7 was planned to be The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, but because Josh, Tim, SuperJeenius, and Pcull 44444 were playing that game at the time, they decided to hold off on it until later. It became their twenty-second one instead.
    • In his solo channel, Chugga said there was planned to be a Kirby's Epic Yarn LP. However, they called it off because they thought the game doesn't work well with two people. (and because they couldn't kill eachother) Later, Chugga LP'ed it himself, though he did make one multiplayer video featuring Jon.
    • Jon suggested that Chugga should switch to Daisy in Mario Party, since Donkey Kong isn't playable after Mario Party 4. Instead, Chugga foreshadowed that he'd be using Toad when the issue came up during the Mario Party 3 playthrough by talking in Toad's voice (with Jon adding "Yes, it's exactly what you think it means"), and as explained when they played Future Dream in Mario Party 5 where Toad was the AI indeed was planning to use him; however, after the Mario Party 6 livestream and the Daisy-centered innuendos it spawned he ultimately decided to play as Daisy. He eventually did switch to Toad for Mario Party 7 onward after failing to win a single board as Daisy in 5 and 6.
    • On one of Proton Jon's Fortune Cookie nights (specifically "Countdown to Next Con Edition"), Jon mentioned he pitched Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for the channel, as the PS3 version has Local Multiplayer. It was turned down due to the awkwardness of the mode.
    • On another one of Proton Jon's Fortune Cookie nights (specifically, "The Longest Day Edition"), another game that was pitched for the channel was Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One with Jon himself playing as Captain Quark, but the overall quality of the game led to this not happening.
    • On yet another one of Proton Jon's streams ("Game Clearing: Starting Rotation 5, "Short, But Not Sweet""), a playthrough for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been recorded, but hasn't been uploaded due to poor gameplay. However, this playthrough might be uploaded if there's no other playthroughs left in the backlog.
    • Some games were planned for the TRG Colosseum, but didn't make it to the final list. Among these cut games include but not limited to Fighter Maker, Jackbox, and Kirby's Dream Course. Jackbox eventually gets a spot in Colosseum 2021.
    • They had plans for eight player mode in Mario Party 7, but the group they wanted to do it with disbanded.
    • According to Jon during his Model Kit stream for Roll, the third Colosseum would have had a Sonic Adventure 2 theme featuring a second lamp being an Evil Counterpart to the original. This idea was shelved due to travel bans imposed due to the pandemic.
    • Emile once mentioned in an interview that, earlier on, the group was originally going to just be him and Jon. Tim was originally their first guest, but then they bonded and they were made into a trio.
    • Yoshiller was supposed to appear in some degree in Colosseum Direct, but this ended up not happening for whatever reason.
    • Many details regarding the creation of the logo can be found through Mal's tumblr here.
    • They have repeatedly mentioned considering playing Dokapon Journey, but have cited the game's extreme scarcity and price as a major roadblock into making it happen.
    • According to Stephen on his video blog, for his bumper for Colosseum 2021, a thriller featuring the lamp, he was going to feature himself being levitated by a force. However, he didn't have the tools or the time to pull it off. He also planned a few other methods of attempting to dispose of the lamp, including throwing the box into a lake (turned down for not being able to find a place to do so legally, plus difficulty in fishing it back out) and setting it on fire (turned down due to a burn ban in his area at the time).
    • 100% Orange Juice was pitched to be played in the 10th anniversary special stream, but didn't pan out for reasons unknown. It did at eventually become a series proper on the channel.
    • As shown on Fortune Cookie "Still Need A Nap From Colosseum Edition", Jon had prepared (but not rendered) an alternate version of the bumper from the 2021 Colosseum where RosaJon found out about Jon's Picross "emergency", made in case the incentive was met for Rosa to be there all three days. In this alternate version, instead of RosaJon magically creating a NERF gun to shoot Jon with until he got back into action for the Colosseum's last day, it was Jon producing a NERF gun to threaten Rosa into participating for one more day.
    • Durring the Banjo-Kazooie LP, Jon revealed that a Scott Pilgrim VS The World LP was planned at one point but was scrapped.
    • Several aspects of the 2023 Colosseum had to be altered over the course of its production:
      • Emile and Tim were supposed to be involved in the event, but they had to back out due to them both coming down with COVID at the last minute.
      • 2023 Colosseum saw a decent amount of segment reshuffling. A Pokémon Stadium minigames segment got changed to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards minigames due to issues with the N64/streambox; this turns into a joke with everyone in the segment insisting they're playing Pokémon. Pokémon Stadium eventually became the first game of Chaos Fortune Cookie once it got fixed.
      • Josh was going to run a Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts segment, but ended up too tired after being in most of the segments that day (presumably having subbed in for Emile/Tim). TRG Makes Music ended up extended because of this.
      • Originally, the Nap Time segment was pitched by Adri for Colosseum Direct in 2020 (prior to it going online). According to Jon's post-Colosseum stream, MC made many of the incentives for it, as story time was the only major one. The storytime was also originally meant to be Go the Fuck to Sleep, before realizing that Direct Relief may not be a fan of the curse-laden book. Jyggy also said a book called "No One Likes a Fart" was also considered, before they finally decided to go with Dragons Love Tacos. Poor Kampy also was not meant to be on camera; he tried to save the Lamp from falling and ended up getting wrapped alongside the couch.
