Why should Mikoto sleep in her own bed when Mai is softer?

Two characters find themselves in a There Is Only One Bed situation. They awake the next morning to discover that at least one, or possibly both of them are clinging to each other in bed.

Might involve a case of What Did I Do Last Night?. If at least one of the characters was inebriated it could involve a Bedmate Reveal and/or Alcohol-Induced Bisexuality.

It can be particularly embarrassing if one of the parties involved Sleeps in the Nude. Such a character will also often, for comedy purposes, be The Shameless, and ironically be the least concerned about their current situation when they wake up.

It might also serve as a dose of Ho Yay/Les Yay.

May overlap with Sleep Cute. It can result in a degree of Ship Tease, as well. This is particularly true if one party had climbed into bed with the intent of having the other person cling to them.

Usually happens to couples, or possible couples, but non-romantic versions also exist, particularly with a Cuddle Bug. May or may not be Played for Laughs if the characters hate each other in their waking lives or present a tough persona that would not allow cuddling. The Slapstick variant is Sleep Squashing, where a smaller character gets Squashed Flat by the bigger one.

Compare Suggestive Collision and Accidental Kiss. Subtrope of Accidental Hug.

    Anime & Manga
  • Ai Yori Aoshi: Aoi climbs into Kaoru's futon with him. When he questions her about this, she states that he clung tightly to her in his sleep, which makes her very happy.
  • Azumanga Daioh: When the girls get the photos back from their first summer vacation together, Kaorin, who was unable to attend, is horrified to find a picture of Tomo sleeping in the same futon as, and clinging tightly to, a sleeping Miss Sakaki. When asked why (Kaorin has an unrequited crush on Sakaki), all Tomo can offer by way of explanation is that she tends to cling to things in her sleep. When Kaorin further demands to know why, Tomo shrugs and says there's no real reason.
  • Chained Soldier: Nei is shown to be this, when yuuki was sharing the same room with unit 7.
  • Delicious in Dungeon: Befitting her catlike nature, despite her standoffishness while awake, Izutsumi likes having someone to share body heat with in her sleep.
  • Fate/stay night: Coupled with a Bedmate Reveal, after the battle with Berserker, Shirou wakes up in his futon being lectured by Saber, only for them both to hear a request to keep it down. Shirou pulls back his covers to find Illya clinging to him. Rin is not amused when she learns of this.
  • Goblin Slayer: Downplayed. After the titular character is nearly killed, he wakes in bed. He is about to get up when he feels a tug and turns to see a naked Priestess holding onto his arm. He gently extricates himself from her grip and covers her with a blanket.
  • In Grave of the Fireflies, Seita pulls Setsuko up close to him while he is sleeping to comfort her when she cries, waking their increasingly irritable Aunt. Later in the film, when the siblings have sought refuge in a disused bomb shelter, Seita once again pulls Setsuko up close to him after she has fallen asleep but she quickly tags on to this and gently kicks him off.
  • My-HiME: The anime and manga each play this their own way.
    • (Anime): One episode actually shows a time-lapse of Mikoto leaving her own bed, climbing into Mai's, and glomming onto her. Comments by Mai suggest this is a daily occurrence.
    • (Manga) After it's revealed that Yuuichi is Mai's Key (and Natsuki's), he is made to share a dorm room with Mai and Mikoto. He is then subjected to the sight of Mikoto glomming tightly to Mai, to the point she's about to inadvertently expose a sleeping Mai's boobs to Yuuichi. Yuuichi begs someone to get him out of there. Natsuki obliges.
  • Negi Springfield, the protagonist of Negima! Magister Negi Magi has trouble sleeping alone so he would often crawl into the bed of his cousin Nekane without thinking. When he stays with Asuna and Konoka, he'd often sneak into her bed since she bears a resemblence to Nekane. Being an Ecchi series, Asuna often ends up half-naked from the encounters and displeased with Negi.
  • Squid Girl: Squid Girl will often cling to Eiko's bare leg with her tentacles in her sleep. • Usagi-chan de Cue!!: After Haru has taken the bunny-girl Mimika into his home, she insists on sleeping in Haru's bed with him. This is normal for rabbits, who sleep huddled in a group to conserve warmth and to alert everyone to danger. As Mimika cuddles Haru, she reverts form to Inaba Mikami, an asocial Action Girl with a troubled past. It's out of character for Inaba to cuddle anyone; that she continues to cuddle next to Haru reveals that, despite her "shinigami" reputation, she secretly longs to belong with someone. Haru can only stroke her hair as she switches between Mimika and Inaba forms.
  • Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!: Sakurai seems prone to do this whenever she falls asleep near Uzaki. One time, during a vacation trip, he grabs her when she's about to take a photo of him while he sleeps, and uses her as a body pillow. Later, he falls asleep during a mid-class break at college and she lies next to him and falls asleep too. A few minutes later they're found by Sakaki and a few other students who watch them sleep while Sakurai holds Uzaki by the waist.
  • WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me: Hinata loves Mya-nee so much, she will cling to her like a tick every time they sleep together. Because it is impossible to tell who else is on the bed while asleep, that means Hinata will cling like a tick to whoever is sleeping in the same bed as her.

  • Once Upon a December Night: The Turtles, as little kids, often slept in a pile in the living room during the winter (since they were more sensitive to cold than Splinter). The Turtles insist, however, that they are not "cuddling", they're "huddling for warmth".
  • True Potential: In the omake from Chapter 17, Kurotsuchi decides to prevent Shikamaru from sleeping during an entire night as a revenge for when he declined to play a card game with her earlier that day. The next morning, Naruto walks into the room and sees the two of them sleeping, with Shikamaru underneath the covers and Kurotsuchi on top of them while also cuddling each other. The Uzumaki then leaves the room and grins while thinking about having found "the perfect blackmail". This is followed by Shikamaru and Kurotsuchi waking up and, after realizing their current position, agreeing that this never happened.

However, this was done to show Vanille secretly being lonely rather than any romantic hints.
