Recap / Friends S 7 E 6 The One With The Nap Partners

Go To

After a night of watching Die Hard, Ross and Joey fall asleep next to each other and upon waking up, are deeply embarrassed to have done so. Monica leaves Rachel and Phoebe to decide which of the two will be her bridesmaid, leading to them competing for it and having Ross and Joey be the judges. Monica meets an ex of Chandler's, Julie Graff, who was dumped by him due to being overweight at the time.

Tropes:

  • Bridezilla: On learning that Rachel is officially her Maid of Honor, Monica launches into a list of things they need to do to prepare. When Phoebe starts smiling at not having to deal with this Rachel reminds her that Monica is now going to be Phoebe's eventual Maid of Honor, so she's not off the hook.
  • Clingy Sleepers: Ross and Joey fall asleep watching TV and wake up snuggling each other. Ross is horrified and wants to forget it ever happened; Joey, on the other hand, enjoyed it and pressures Ross to do it again.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Ross and Joey napping with each other and their reactions to it makes it seem like they engaged in some sort of sexual experimentation that they try to deny ever happened afterwards.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Monica is initially hurt at the revelation that Chandler dumped Julie because she was fat, she is openly shocked when Chandler reveals that Julie had gained a hundred and forty-five pounds over the summer in question.
  • Formerly Fat: Chandler dumped Julie, his ex from summer camp as a teenager, because she was fat. She is not anymore. Monica, being familiar with her plight, makes Chandler apologize for what he did to her.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Rachel improvises a heartfelt speech as a bridesmaid, which gets her a high score from Ross and Joey. Phoebe turns the tables around by starting her own speech by saying she discussed the wedding with Rachel while they were both in the shower, naked. Ross and Joey enthusiastically give their approval.
  • Heads or Tails?: Rachel suggests they flip a coin to decide who gets to be Monica's Maid of Honor but Phoebe refuses, claiming that coins hate her. After getting fed up with Ross and Joey's tests she decides to flip a coin anyway. Phoebe is delighted when she wins and declares "the coins have finally forgiven me!"
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: What Ross stresses after he and Joey wake up from the first nap. He is quite displeased when Joey wants to do it again and won't drop the subject.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: When asked why he dumped Julie, Chandler casually comments it was because she had gotten fat. He realizes in the middle of that very word how Monica will react.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Monica is worried Chandler would break up with her, if she got fat again, and asks how much Julie could've possibly gained. Chandler says 145 pounds, much to Monica's shock.
  • Sleep Cute: Ross sleeps with his head on the prone Joey's chest. They're horrified by their positions when they wake up and try to pretend that nothing happened. They decide (after much convincing from Joey) to do it again anyway.
  • Younger Than They Look: When looking at an old trick-or-treating photo, Phoebe assumes that Rachel was 14. She's surprised when Rachel says she was 10 and simply developed early.
    Phoebe: Man alive!
