Pure Elements

    Prism Cherry

Prism Cherry/Sakura Kagami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prism_cherry.png

A middle school student who becomes one of the Pure Elements. Prism Cherry is an average magical girl, who longs to become a special one. She tries her best to look for opportunities, despite mostly getting the short end of the stick. She is the only magical girl stationed in S City.

She's thought to have died early on in the control room, however it's later revealed that Pythie managed to save her in time. Unfortunately, she later becomes the tenth Magical Girl to die, being stabbed with a Spade Shufflin's spear.

Her ability is to transform the reflections in her mirror. If an object is reflected in her mirror, she can change the reflection to be anything she wants. However, this only affects the reflection, not the object itself.

  • Anyone Can Die: Cherry is set up to be one of the main characters, but once the action hits, she's immediately sidelined by a grievous injury. While she does receive aid and is brought back to the laboratory, she's killed off soon afterwards.
  • Decoy Protagonist: She's the first magical girl introduced, but is thought to be dead for most of the story. She ends up dying for real not too soon after reappearing.
  • Disney Death: She's thought to have died in the control room when Shufflin attacked, but she's saved by Frederica just in time, allowing her to return at the end. She's not so lucky the second time however.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Turns out that what Cherry's ability actually entails is the manipulation of light reflected by mirrors. This enables her to blind enemies and provide a power battery for Marika's flower based magic.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kagami" (鏡) means "mirror" and her power revolves around mirrors.
  • Odd Name Out: She's the only Pure Element without the word "princess" in her name, as she became a magical girl the standard way.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: She's an ordinary middle school student who is utterly average in every way. She became a magical girl in order to fix that, but her particular magic doesn't have any obvious uses, bringing her back to square one.
  • Sixth Ranger: She was invited by Deluge to become part of the Pure Elements' team some time after their formation.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Her magic is restricted to her mirror. Regardless of how elaborate she makes the reflections within it, reality will stay the same regardless, essentially rendering her magic useless in most situations. However, sunlight from the mirror works just fine to charge up Marika's flowers.

    Princess Inferno

Princess Inferno/Akari Hiyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_inferno.png

A high school student and one of the Pure Elements. She was once a star athlete at her school, before an accident broke her knee. Despite being fully healed, it still hurts her to run, and it renders her unable to pursue that dream anymore. Regardless, she's still an outgoing girl.

She is the sixth Magical Girl to die, her back being slashed open by a Joker Shufflin's scythe.

Her ability is to fight enemies using the power of fire. Her scimitar emits a large amount of heat from itself. It's strong enough to evaporate water with a touch, and it can hurt magical girls as well. She can also produce fire from her own body as well.

  • Meaningful Name: The "Inferno" part of her name is a direct reference to her fire manipulation magic.
  • Playing with Fire: Her magic lets her create and manipulate fire.
  • Stripperiffic: Her outfit is essentially a skimpy bikini and quite revealing, a fact that her teammates don't ever let her forget.

    Princess Tempest

Princess Tempest/Mei Higashionna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_tempest.png

An elementary school student and one of the Pure Elements. She is an excitable elementary school student. Always energetic, Tempest tends to be fast-thinking, and can often do things impulsively.

She is the seventh Magical Girl to die, decapitated by the Joker Shufflin.

Her ability is to fight enemies using the power of wind. Her boomerangs create a vacuum around them when thrown. The vacuum is strong enough to pull in other magical girls. The blades are also sharp enough that they can slice with a touch. Her powers also grant her the ability to fly.

  • Blow You Away: She has wind based magic.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: She is a bit bitter over the fact that the boy she has a Precocious Crush on is Inferno's friend. This feeling leads Tempest to annoy Inferno a lot, more than she would any of her other teammates.
  • Genki Girl: She never seems to run out of energy.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Since she looks like middle school-aged as a magical girl, Tempest figures she'd have more luck gaining her crush's affection by approaching him while in magical girl form.
  • Meaningful Name: A "tempest" is a term often used to refer to a particularly violent windstorm. Princess Tempest has the ability to control the wind.

    Princess Quake

Princess Quake/Chiko Saitou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_quake.png

A college student and one of the Pure Elements. She is a college student who adores children.

She is the fifth Magical Girl to die, decapitated by the Joker Shufflin to restock the Shufflins.

Her ability is to fight enemies using the power of earth. Her hammer is one of the strongest weapons in the Elements' arsenal. A hit with the hammer generates a large earthquake-level tremor that's strong enough to stun magical girls.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Stays behind fighting Shufflin and Grim Heart in a battle she knows she can't win to allow Inferno to warn everyone of who the real villains are.
  • Meaningful Name: The "Quake" part of her magical girl name is a direct reference to her powers over earth.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: She's fully aware that her preoccupation with observing and drawing children could land her in serious hot water if any one was to find out.
  • Off with Her Head!: She's decapitated by the Joker Shufflin, making her the fifth to die.
  • Team Mom: Being the oldest of the Pure Elements, Quake feels she must take care of the members of her team.

Freelancers

    Filru

Filru

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/filru.png

A former jailer who lost her job following a horrible jailbreak incident. Filru is currently now seeking re-employment anywhere she can find it. She eventually joins up with the Freelancer team in investigating a strange occurrence in S City.

She's the ninth Magical Girl to die, taking a shot from a Shufflin meant for Princess Deluge.

Her ability is to sew anything together with her magic needle and thread. She has magical needles and a thread that can sew through any material, be it cloth, skin, concrete, or metal. The sewing doesn't inflict pain or damage, but the threads themselves are strong enough to restrain magical girls. Also, the thin threads are near-invisible to anyone but Filru.

  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: The magic power of sewing doesn't sound too useful, but her threads are near invisible, near unbreakable, go through people like anything else, don't cause any wounds or pain, can be used to easily restrain people, create makeshift weapons, and lay a variety of traps.
  • Meaningful Name: "Fil" is French for "thread" and Filru's magic is based around thread and sewing.
  • Swiss-Army Superpower: Thanks to their strength and painless feature, Filru's threads are incredibly versatile: traps, weapons, stitches, restraints, and sentry duty are just a few of the things she can use them for.
  • Taking the Bullet: Killed shielding Princess Deluge from a Shufflin.

    Uttakatta

Uttakatta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uttakatta.png

A Freelancer magical girl dressed in overalls. She's been hired to investigate a strange occurrence in S City, and encounters Filru there.

She is the second Magical Girl to die, stabbed in the throat by a Shufflin.

Her ability is to make mysterious bubbles. She can blow special bubbles from her bubble straw (which looks like a giant trumpet). The bubbles are adjustable in size, shape, and density. The bubbles can carry one person each. The highest density bubbles can't be broken by magical girls.

  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Killed unceremoniously by a Shufflin.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is very similiar to "utakata" (泡沫) which can means "bubbles". Her magic is based around bubbles.
  • Nerves of Steel: Even when things turn dangerous, Uttakatta keeps a level head.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to the other freelancers, Uttakatta is given very little characterization or screentime.

    Kafuria

Kafuria/Kokoro Kimura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kafuria.png

A Freelancer magical girl covered in a dark veil and possessing gigantic black wings. She's been hired to investigate a strange occurrence in S City, and encounters Filru there.

She is the third Magical Girl to die, being decapitated by the Joker Shufflin.

Her ability is to know who will be the soonest to die. She can tell, from among a group of people, which one will die the earliest. She doesn't know the cause and/or time of death, and "earliest" can range from "a few seconds after now" to "years later". The only thing she knows is that they will die the earliest from the people in her field of vision. This is denoted by a skull mark on their head, though only she can see the mark.

  • Alliterative Name: When rendered using English letters, Kafuria's given and family names start with a "k": Kokoro Kimura.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: The power to know who'll die first in any given situation sounds sinister, but it's actually quite benevolent and even helpful.
  • Blessed with Suck: The "Are Our Real Lives Fulfilling?" side story shows that her magic has little practical purpose beyond making others afraid of her, leading her to live a freelancers lifestyle. Subverted later, when her power allows her to discover a bus accident about to occur and prevent it with the aid of her friends.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her outfit is almost entirely black and her magic is fairly unnerving, but she's a decent person who just wants to help.
  • Off with Her Head!: Her fate at the Joker Shufflin's hands.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Knowing who dies next doesn't help much on the job, though she can prevent a death if she knows the cause of it. The "Are Our Real Lives Fulfilling?" sidestory reveals she's part of a group of magical girls whose magic also doesn't have any obvious applications.

Magical Kingdom

Department of Diplomacy

    Lady Proud

Lady Proud

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lady_proud.png

Former head of the Department of Diplomacy, now current head once again. Lady Proud is a magical girl with moderate skills of leadership, but she has to take care of the mess that the previous leadership's absence has caused. With most of the Department of Diplomacy trying to grab power, Proud must try and keep the whole thing from falling apart.

She is the first Magical Girl to die, being eaten by disruptors. She at least manages to use her blood to blow them up alongside her.

Her ability is to turn her own blood into whatever liquid she likes. She's able to alter her blood and change it into any type of liquid. This only works for her blood that's still wet. Dry blood can't be affected.

  • Actually Not a Vampire: Her outfit, fangs, and heightened ability to smell blood give her a vampire aesthetic, but she's not a vampire. Her powers are based around her own blood, not needing the blood of others.
  • Animal Motifs: Her outfit includes some bat imagery, such as a pair of bat hair ornaments and a cape that resembles wings.
  • Bloody Murder: Her blood can turn into any sort of liquid, including irritants and explosives.
  • Mama Bear: While Umbrain's childish behavior annoys her sometimes, Lady Proud cares enough about her that she plans to make Umbrain her executive officer if Umbrain gets that higher position. Umbrain's disappearance causes Lady Proud to lose her cool, and losing her patience leads to her death.
  • Nervous Wreck: She becomes incredibly reckless and angry once Umbrain vanishes.
  • Sacrificial Lion: First of the girls in JOKERS to bite it, despite her high position.

    Umbrain

Umbrain/Mitsu Kasayama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/umbrain.png

Lady Proud's number two, Umbrain is Lady Proud's most trusted assistant. She is a young magical girl who is rather impatient and feisty, but always eager to do some good work.

She is the fourth Magical Girl to die, being decapitated by the Joker Shufflin.

Her ability is to use a magic umbrella that can block anything. Her umbrella can be used to catch anything, and will have the object land softly on it. Her magic still works even if the umbrella is closed, or if the object lands inside the umbrella.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: She gets bored rather easily and tends to easily lose focus on whatever task is at hand.
  • Death of a Child: Word of God revealed that she's an elementary school student, and probably the youngest of the magical girls who die in this arc besides Princess Tempest.
  • Number Two: She works with Lady Proud and does whatever she asks.
  • Off with Her Head!: Her fate at the Joker Shufflin's hands.
  • Parasol of Pain: Subverted. Her power is to have a magic umbrella, but it works more for defense instead of offense.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Umbrain doesn't accomplish much before she's kidnapped and later executed to restore one of the Shufflin.
  • Undying Loyalty: Very loyal to Lady Proud, who trust her in turn and plans to bring Umbrain with her if she gets that promotion.

Information Bureau

    Grim Heart

Grim Heart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grim_heart.png

A magical girl from the Homeland Divisions. She always seems to travel with her loyal servant/slave Shufflin, and nobody can really understand just what she's saying.

Her ability is to ignore those without proper manners. She's able to ignore almost anything she considers rude to herself. Attacks, sounds, even magical powers can't affect her if she doesn't give permission. In cases where she's brought to another world, like the Dream World, her power takes priority.

  • Artificial Human: She was artificially bred to be the reincarnation of Chêne Osk Baal Mel, one of the Three Sages.
  • Berserk Button: She does not like having to do pretty much anything herself. This even includes moving.
  • Big Bad: She's the primary antagonist of JOKERS, her presence a looming threat throughout.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Styled like the Red Queen and has no qualms about killing anyone who upsets her.
  • Ironic Echo: "Off with your head" is pretty funny when you first hear it, and it's also the last thing you hear before most of her hostages are killed.
  • Mean Boss: She treats her right hand man, Shufflin, horribly, often demanding her to do this or that with nary a kind word.
  • Never Found the Body: Disappears in a train crash at the end of JOKERS.
  • No-Sell: Her magic makes it so she can cancel all kinds of attack, from the physical to the mental. The only way to get around this is to manipulate her into agreeing to take on the attack.
  • Really 700 Years Old: As an incarnation of the Three Sages, she's far older than her magical girl form would suggest.
  • Superpower Lottery: Her magic, combined with her haughty personality, makes her basically impervious to any and all attacks.
  • The Unintelligible: Her sole line of dialogue (most of the time) is "off with your head". Somehow Kafuria understands Grim Heart's name and occupation based just on that.
  • Upper-Class Twit: She hails from a higher position to the other magical girls, sees herself as superior to them, bullies her servant who she forces to do all the work, and refers to any action taken against her as "barbaric".

    Shufflin

Shufflin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shufflin.png

A magical girl dressed like a playing card. She is mostly silent, and obeys Grim Heart. She is also frequently abused by Grim Heart, but seems to be too scared to actually do anything about it. Arrived with her to S City on unknown purposes.

Her ability is to have powers that change depending on various suits and numbers. She has multiple copies of herself based around playing cards, with a Joker form that acts as a commander to all the others. The powers of an individual Shufflin depends on the suit and number: each suit has its own specialization, and the higher the number, the more powerful that skill. (For example, a five of Clubs Shufflin will be five times more skilled at stealth than a regular Shufflin.) If any non-Joker Shufflins are killed, they can be revived by taking a life.

  • The Ace: The Ace of any Shufflin will be the most skilled at their particular ability compared with the rest of their suit (e.g. an Ace of Heart Shufflin will be the most durable out of any other heart Shufflin).
  • The Dragon: Joker Shufflin commands her underling Shufflins per Grim Heart's orders.
  • Hive Mind: The Joker Shufflin commands an army of 52 Shufflins. She can directly order any of these 52 to do her bidding.
  • Never Found the Body: Disappears in a train crash at the end of JOKERS.
  • The Quiet One: The other magical girls initially view Shufflin as being an introverted nobody. In reality, this is because the army of 52 Shufflin have a Hive Mind, thus following all of Grim Heart's orders is literally everything they think about. The Joker Shufflin speaks normally when she is alone with Grim Heart.
  • Undying Loyalty: Obedient to Grim Heart, though it's heavily implied to be out of fear.

Others

    Styler Mimi

Styler Mimi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/styler_mimi.png
A magical girl who runs a workshop where she can change anyone's appearance. Styler Mimi is a level-headed magical girl, who's very much averse to going in dangerous situations. Unfortunately, it looks like she's been dragged into a situation she doesn't want to be in by Marika.

She is the eighth Magical Girl to die, being stabbed in the throat by a Shufflin.

Her ability is to use magic outfits to alter a person's appearance. She is able to alter the appearance of anyone to become anyone else. The magic only affects their appearance, and in the case of magical girls, is canceled upon detransformation.

  • Desecrating the Dead: Her human form receives this treatment by the Shufflins, being torn to pieces.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She's one of the nicer characters in the series, and she won't hesitate to kick ass if needed.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She's a beautiful stylist magical girl and a skilled fighter, capable of holding her own in the midst of battle.
  • Only Friend: She's one of the only people who can stand to be with Marika.
  • Only Sane Man: She's one of the few characters who keeps her cool throughout the events of JOKERS, while almost everyone else is either crazy or traumatized.
  • Punny Name: While most of her name is written in katakana, the first "mi" in "Mimi" is written with the kanji for "beauty" (美), fitting for a magical girl themed around fashion.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calm and level-headed Blue to Marika's impulsive and boisterous red.
  • Sensory Overload: During their fight in Archfiend Pam's 36th Hell Survival Game, Mimi takes advantage of Hana's sensitive smell by spraying their surroundings with perfume in order to cover her own tracks.
  • Shear Menace: Her weapon is a pair of hair scissors.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: She holds off the Shufflins so they wouldn't reach Marika who was being empowered by Prism Cherry. Despite being outnumbered, Mimi puts up an impressive fight and manages to hold the enemy off, before she finally goes down.

    Stanczyka

Stanczyka/Ripple

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stanczyka.png

A clown magical girl that mysteriously appeared in S City. Stanczyka's mannerisms are highly exaggerated, and she often tends to mime her actions with gestures rather than words.

Her ability is to astonish people with magic performances. She seems to be able to conjure a variety of circus-like objects, mostly useful for performances and entertainment.

  • Disney Death: She's thought to have blown herself up to stall the Joker Shufflin. In actuality, Frederica managed to pull Ripple out at the last minute.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She seems to sacrifice her life to enable Princess Inferno and Snow White to escape from the Joker Shufflin. Subverted in that she doesn't really die.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Her name, jester outfit, and antics, are an allusion to Stańczyk, a legendary Polish jester from the Renaissance era.
  • Outside-Context Problem: According to Fal, nothing points to Stanczyka's existence; she just appears out of nowhere partway through JOKERS without any explanation for her presence or why she wants Snow White to follow her.
  • Sexy Jester: Her jester outfit is very revealing and the inner cover illustration for JOKERS has her in a coy pose.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is her name "Stuntchica" or "Stanczyka"?
  • The Reveal: She's actually a Brainwashed and Crazy Ripple. Frederica was using her crystal ball to act as Ripple's missing arm, revealing where Stanczyka was hiding all those weapons.
  • The Voiceless: She exclusively communicates through gestures.
