Introduced in Original Game and Remake

    Annabelle Dawn Sunray
The title heroine who lives under an abusive father. She is the protagonist of every game except Melody Moonlight. She has been molested her whole life, and for a long time thought that was normal. She also gets picked on at school by everyone and had no friends. Then Melody Moonlight showed up in her life and she finally found a reason to live. In Exorcism, she becomes the newest member of The Church, an abusive orphanage, and tries to escape.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: The plot of Annabelle projection concerns her being picked on by Riley and her other classmates, who call her mean names.
  • The Blank: The "Video Game" effect turns her into a faceless girl, and can be used to scare people.
  • Character Development: She gradually goes from a suicidally depressed girl with no will to live to a strong-willed heroine who doesn't let the mean words of others define her and who saves a bunch of orphans from being abused.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: By the end of Exorcism, Melody has moved away with her mother. While presumably the option for them to reunite still exists, the story cuts off here due to the developer having Died During Production.
  • Dual Boss: The nightmare version of her in The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight chases Melody along with Melody's mother and Jason.
  • The Eeyore: Thanks to the abuse she receives from both her father and her classmates, she has fallen into deep depression. The first game and remake is all about finding reasons not to kill herself.
    I can't do anything right.
What's the point of life if you're not even enjoying it?
All of my friends secretly hate me, don't they?
I can't do anything at all.
Everywhere I go, my problems follow me.
I am a cursed husk with an empty soul.
    Why wouldn't people hate me?
  • Final Boss: In The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight, where a nightmare version of her is one of the chasers in the final segment, and in Annabelle: Projection where Ego and Melody must defeat her to help her get over her issues.
  • Gamer Chick: She enjoys video games like Banjo-Kazooie and Undertale, to the point that they show up in her dreams.
Annabelle: I love video games. They're more than just something I play. They're something I feel. Something I can relate to. You can learn a thing or two about video games, and that's what I love about them. One day I hope I can make my own...
Ego: One day I hope I can GET my own.
Annabelle: And at the very least, video games are fun as hell.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When the party is captured by the Egos in An Annventure To End Them All, she drinks the Strange Elixir, which will inflate her body and cause her to explode, so the explosion can free Rudy and Jeanne from the prison and allow them to complete their quest.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She's apparently straight, according to Exorcism, but seems to reciprocate Melody's feelings for her.
(You might not be gay, but boy... Melody makes you wish you were.)
  • Perpetual Frowner: Due to her depressing life, she does not have much to smile about and is always seen with a blank face. Though this changes in Exorcism when she is about to escape The Church.
  • "Pop!" Goes the Human: In An Annventure To End Them All, when she drinks the Strange Elixir, her body inflates and explodes.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Exorcism, after staying at The Church for only a few minutes, she decides to escape when The Preacher tells her she deserved to be molested by her father.
Annabelle: Okay. I'm not staying here anymore.
The Preacher: The law requires that you do.
    Annabelle: Fuck you and goodbye.
  • Son of a Whore: Her mother was a stripper who met Jason at her club.
  • Straw Nihilist: Non-villainous version, as she expresses the viewpoint that her life doesn't matter.
Nothing I do will matter in the end.
I feel like everything I'm doing is leading up to nothing.
We're all going to become dust, what's the point?
    My mind is beyond repair.
Nothing matters at all. Life is meaningless.

    Melody Moonlight
Annabelle's best friend. She is the person who gave Annabelle hope and taught her that her abusive home life was not normal. She is also the protagonist of Melody Moonlight, which deals with her nightmares as a result of what Jason has put Annabelle through.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She is the protagonist of The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight, which deals with her own nightmares involving Annabelle and her father.
  • Alliterative Name: Melody Moonlight.
  • Deuteragonist: She is the second-most important character aside from Annabelle herself, and their relationship forms the core of much of the series.
  • Gamer Chick: She loves playing games with Annabelle.
  • Gayngst: While she is pretty comfortable with her feelings towards Annabelle, she greatly fears the possibility that her devoutly religious mother will not approve, and has nightmares about her mother calling Annabelle a demon and trying to separate the two. We never learn how the mother, Tiffany, actually feels about it, and she does not even seem to be aware.
  • Implied Love Interest: She is very close to Annabelle, declares love for her at one point, and is the one joy in her life, but it is never made explicit if they are lovers or really close friends. Until Exorcism, that is, where they are revealed as canonically in love with each other.
  • Love Confession: In a flashback in Exorcism, she finally confesses her love to Annabelle.
I know you're straight but I kinda like you, okay? I just kinda feel some sort of way when I'm around you and. I don't want that to end. And I know telling you this is probably just gonna make things awkward but. I couldn't just not. I wanted to tell someone. But I only have you.

    Melissa "Candy" Sunray
Annabelle's mother. She was a stripper who met Jason as a customer.

    Jason Sunray
You always were a dirty girl, weren't you, Annabelle? Useless! USELESS! You do NOTHING around here but rot your own brain!

Annabelle's abusive father who molests her and abuses his wife Melissa. He is the antagonist of the series and the cause of Annabelle and Melody's nightmares. He is a sick, brutish man who causes pain and misery to everyone around him. In Exorcism, he steals Tiffany Moonlight's job as head of The Church and takes over as The Preacher, a black-hooded "woman" who turns the facility into a hellish prison for the orphans. He intends to keep the orphans traumatized so the state will keep paying him to "heal" his patients, and transfers Annabelle there with the intent to continue molesting her.

  • Abusive Parents: He forces Annabelle to be his sexual plaything and forbids her from seeing her friend Melody.
  • Bait the Dog: When introducing himself as The Preacher, he initially makes himself out to be a warm, caring preacher. That lasts for only a few lines before he starts blaming the orphans for their own suffering, telling them that it's God's punishment.
Another good morning here, is it not? We have a new girl joining us today, so I hope you don't mind me repeating our church's introductory spiel. I feel like some of you silly billies need to hear it. So here it is: *cough cough* I know a lot of you believe you have been wronged. I'm here to tell you that yes, that is true. But also that everything happens for a reason. While it may be hard to accept at first, you deserve what happened to you. I know, I know, it's hard to hear. But it's the truth.
  • Blaming the Victim:
    • As The Preacher, he tells the abused and suffering orphans under his care that their suffering is their fault and God’s punishment for their sins.
I know a lot of you believe you have been wronged. I'm here to tell you that yes, that is true. But also that everything happens for a reason. While it may be hard to accept at first, you deserve what happened to you. I know, I know, it's hard to hear. But it's the truth. We are the cause of our own fates. If you had acted better in the past, you wouldn't be here right now. The sooner you accept that the sooner you can start to heal. And I can help you with the healing process. It all starts with devotion. You can all become better people. God may not have liked who you once were, but I can change you. And you'll no longer have to endure His punishment. Please join me for five minutes of silent prayer. Remember to reflect on your actions and ask for forgiveness.
    • He even goes on to tell Annabelle that his molestation of her is somehow her fault.
The Preacher: Do you really think if God approved of the way you were behaving...
      Annabelle: Don't say it—
(The Preacher whispers into your ear. Her breath is ice cold.)
The Preacher: Do you think He would've let your father touch you the way he did? If you truly didn't deserve it?
  • Big Bad: Of the series as a whole. In the first three games, his abuse of Annabelle is what brings about her and Melody's nightmares. In Exorcism, he is The Preacher, head of The Church who abuses the kids under his care and tries to keep Annabelle imprisoned in the facility. The only game where he's not the Big Bad is Projection, where Riley takes the role instead.
  • The Coats Are Off: In Exorcism, when his identity is revealed to Annabelle, he throws off his preacher robe just before chasing her down in an attempt to kill her.
  • Condescending Compassion: His "compassion" towards the orphans of The Church is telling them that their suffering is God's punishment for being horrible children and that only he can fix them. Of course, his real goal is to keep them broken so he can get more government money, so his compassion is fake.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He threatens Melody to stay away from his daughter because he wants her to himself.
If you keep hanging out with Melody, you'll regret it.
  • Demoted to Extra: As opposed to his Big Bad role in the first three games and Exorcism, Projection reduces him to two appearances in the beginning and has Riley take over instead.
  • Dual Boss: In The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight, with the nightmare versions of Annabelle and Melody's mother.
  • Education Papa: In Projection, he drops off Annabelle at school and tells her that she will become a great doctor... and makes a not-so-subtle threat that if she fails, there will be consequences of some sort. Given how he usually treats her...
My beautiful handsome baby is gonna grow up to be the greatest doctor ever.... Right? RIGHT? ...You better.
  • Expy: Of Marty Armstrong, who sexually abuses his daughter, the heroine, and shows up as the main figure in her nightmares. Both even wind up turning a new leaf and apologizing for their abuse shortly before being murdered (though in Jason's case, this only happens in a non-canon game).
  • Hated by All: With the sole exception of his wife, Melissa, and his brainwashed minions in Exorcism, everyone who knows this guy hates his guts. His daughter Annabelle despises him for molesting her, Melody Moonlight hates him for trying to separate her from her best friend, Tiffany Moonlight hates him for stealing her job, the orphans of The Church hate him for how he abuses them and tells them it's their fault, Father Martin despises being forced to do his dirty work, and other people who've heard of what he did to his daughter openly call him a monster.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Surprisingly, in An Annventure to End Them All, he apologizes to Annabelle for abusing her and makes peace with her before the mysterious force vaporizes him. However, this is only in that alternate canon- in the actual Annabelle canon, he continues to torment her with no remorse.
  • Hiding Behind Religion: Despite The Preacher's... preaching that he wants to turn the children in his care to God and his abuse is intended as repentance, reading the files on his desk reveals that he stole the job from Tiffany and is intentionally keeping the patients traumatized so he can make money off them.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: In Exorcism, he turns out to be The Preacher, the head of The Church who tries to keep Annabelle imprisoned.
  • Final Boss: Of the first three games; the first game and remake have Annabelle go through an obstacle course with many versions of him as the enemies, while in Melody Moonlight he is a Dual Boss with Melody's mother. Also in Exorcism where Annabelle and Roxanne have to run from him and report his abuse to the police.
  • Greed: In Exorcism, he takes over The Church and begins abusing the orphans so he can keep them from ever rejoining society and perpetually collect government money to 'help them'.
  • Kick the Dog: Early on in Exorcism, when Annabelle is openly questioning The Preacher's victim blaming of the orphans, he tells her that God let her father molest her because she deserved it. Given that he is her father in disguise, it's doubly cruel because he's blaming her for his own sins.
  • Named in the Sequel: Annabelle's abusive father was nameless in the original game, but the remake and subsequent games gave him the name Jason Sunray.
  • Never My Fault: While in disguise as The Preacher, he tells Annabelle that she deserved to be molested by him and that it's God's punishment for being a "whore". Given that he's Hiding Behind Religion, it's unclear if he really believes this, but it's a Kick the Dog moment either way.
  • Offing the Offspring: In Exorcism, he tries to kill Annabelle to prevent her from leaking his crimes to the police.
  • Parental Incest: It is heavily indicated that he sexually abuses Annabelle. He outright declares near the end of the first game that Annabelle will dance, dress, and strip for him.
  • Pedophile Priest: In Exorcism, he takes on the persona of The Preacher, head of a church-run orphanage, and has his daughter Annabelle transferred there so he can continue molesting her as he has already been doing to her.
  • Psycho Psychologist: He becomes head of The Church, which doubles as an acclaimed orphanage and counseling center for troubled orphans, and completely scraps their prior humanitarian curriculum. He then replaces it with a system of deliberately abusing patients physically and psychologically, doing things like Blaming the Victim and telling them that they are being punished by God or forcing them to drink ipecac and vomit, in order to keep them traumatized and dependent on The Church so that the government will keep paying him for his job.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: After Annabelle and Roxanne manage to escape The Church and run into the police, the last we see of Jason is him being subdued by Father Martin, and subsequently the narration stating that he was arrested for his crimes.
  • Redemption Equals Death: In the non-canon An Annventure To End Them All, just before he turns to dust, he has a conversation with Annabelle and actually sincerely apologizes for the abuse he put her through. However, this is averted in the actual canon where he never has a moment like this.
  • Sinister Minister: As The Preacher, he runs the Church and tells the children under his care that everything they suffer is their fault and God's punishment, and only by doing what he says can they repent. He is really just in it for the money, and by keeping the orphans traumatized, he can keep getting pay from the government.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: The Preacher, the Big Bad of Exorcism who runs an Orphanage of Fear, turns out to be him in disguise.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: The Church, according to Father Martin, used to be a genuinely good place for troubled orphans to live and be rehabilitated. Then Jason came along, scrapped their original methods, and instituted a regime of physical and emotional abuse while blaming the orphans for their misfortune, all so he can keep them from leaving and rake in the government grants.

Introduced in Melody Moonlight

    Tiffany Moonlight
Melody's devoutly religious mother. Melody fears that she will not accept her homosexual crush on Annabelle and has nightmares about it.
  • Dual Boss: In The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight, she, Jason, and Annabelle chase Melody in the finale.
  • The Fundamentalist: Played with- Melody's nightmares have her forbid Melody from seeing Annabelle because she considers her to be from a "demon family", and she outright chases her daughter when she tries to go anyway, but in the real world, she is more mellow and accepting of Annabelle. Exorcism appears to confirm that she's even worse as the religious Evil Orphanage Lady in charge of The Church, but it's subverted as it's actually Jason doing it.
  • Good All Along: The two games she appears in try to make her look like The Fundamentalist who despises Annabelle and blames her for her own molestation by her father, but this is only in the head of Melody, her daughter, who seems to have the wrong idea about her, and Jason's impersonation of her. When we actually see her, she's friendly and welcoming to Annabelle.
  • Named in the Sequel: Melody's mother first appears in The Dreams Of Melody Moonlight, but her name- Tiffany- is not given until The Exorcism Of Annabelle Sunray.
  • The Nicknamer: In Exorcism, she says that she likes to nickname people she just met.
Tiffany: Anyways, I'm pleased as peas you'll enjoy this meal, Anna.
    Annabelle: Anna?
Tiffany: Yes. I like calling people by their not names. Helps me like them faster. Did you know I used to call Melody "Mel"?
Annabelle: Oh my god that's amazing.
    Tiffany: Isn't it just?
Melody: I would never EVER in a ZILLION YEARS respond to that name.
    Annabelle: I like Mel, though.
    Mel: Nevermind.
  • Unnamed Parent: Until Exorcism gave her the name Tiffany, she was never named, unlike Annabelle's parents.

Introduced in Projection

    Riley
Going to school in THAT? Yikes. At least wash those ugly ass pajamas so the rest of us don't have to see 'em, poor boy.

A blonde girl who bullies Annabelle at school.

  • Alpha Bitch: She is the blonde popular girl who bullies Annabelle.
  • Big Bad: Of Projection, as the leader of Annabelle's bullies and the cause of her problems at school.
  • The Cameo: She briefly appears in the ending of Exorcism as the new occupant of the house that the Moonlight family sold.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Of a sort; while she is the Big Bad, she is not the Final Boss even though it seems like she would be- instead, Annabelle herself is the final boss.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: She repeatedly calls Annabelle fat (despite her being rather skinny) and calls her a retard at one point.
You should be put in a special ed class, you drooling retard.
  • The Unfought: Despite being the Big Bad, Annabelle never fights her. In fact, just when it seems like you will get to fight her, Annabelle herself becomes the Final Boss instead.

    Intrusive Thoughts/ITNRUSIVETOHUGHTs
Giant red heads that represent Annabelle's bullies.
  • Invincible Minor Minion: Not only do they have 900000 HP (far beyond even the Final Boss who only has 10000), but they have such high Evasion that you will never be able to hit them. This represents the idea that you shouldn't fight intrusive thoughts, but ignore them, which is explicitly said by Melody.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: One of them calls Annabelle a special ed student.

Introduced in Exorcism

    Roxanne Star Rockwell
I've been taken away from my friends, too. But you're gonna get out of here, okay? I'm gonna make sure of it.

A fellow orphan in The Church and Annabelle's main ally in helping her escape. She is an anime-loving goth-girl and natural rebel.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to her patient file, her parents were the victims of a Murder-Suicide by her sister, and she witnessed the act.
  • Deuteragonist: In Exorcism, she is Annabelle's main ally in trying to escape from The Church.
  • Perky Goth: Despite living in an Orphanage of Fear, she is pretty optimistic and eager to help Annabelle escape to live a happy life.
  • Punny Name: Her name is an obvious pun on "rock star", and she has a punk aesthetic to match,

    Franklin "Frankie" Bobby Thompson
I just find her words hard to believe. I didn't do anything. Why would I be responsible if I didn't do anything?

A fellow orphan in the Church. He is a shy boy who gets picked on by the staff a lot.

  • Death of a Child: He is electrocuted to death by The Preacher.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He steals the key to The Preacher's office and, upon being captured, hands it to Annabelle despite knowing he'll be tortured and likely killed if he doesn't give it back, then tells Annabelle not to worry about him and just leave. He winds up dying as a result.
Frankie: Take it and go raid that office because I'm sure there's a buttload of evidence there that'll bring The Church down.
(Frankie gave you the Front Office Key.)
    Frankie: Now go, GO!
Annabelle: I can't just leave you—
Frankie: Yes you can. Just go. Please.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in two scenes, but gives Annabelle the key that is pivotal to her escaping The Church and sacrifices his life to do so.

    Father Martin
A priest who serves as The Preacher's assistant.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: He frequently chases down Annabelle and is the main enemy she has to escape from.
  • The Dragon: He serves The Preacher and helps him run The Church, victimizing children and running after Annabelle on his orders. However, he's not happy about it at all.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By the end of Exorcism, he finally gets fed up with helping Jason torment the orphans under their care and helps Annabelle and Roxanne escape with the evidence needed to shut the place down, then knocks out Jason and confesses to everything.
Father Martin: You'll need an ID card to get past the gates.
Annabelle: Okay. Why tell me this?
Martin: Because I'm tired of this. I call myself a man of God but I'm living a life of sin.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: He helps The Preacher run The Church and abuse the children living inside, but it becomes increasingly clear that he is uncomfortable with it. He is shocked and dismayed when The Preacher kills Frankie, and eventually begs Annabelle to expose the truth, giving her an ID card to escape.

    The Preacher
The head of The Church. See Jason Sunray.
