Marie Route's Main Characters
Leon Fou Bartfort
Leon Fou Bartfort in Marie Route
- “Come on, I’ll carry you back so hop on.”
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Leon’s snarking and tormenting of Nicks for his own amusement makes him one, which is a Running Gag.
- Appropriated Appellation: Doesn't mind being known as The Upstart.
- Badass Bystander: Is much better at being this here than in the main story, staying away from the spotlight of the game plot. His preference for stealth helps in this regard, despite his less stealthy actions also earning him a fearsome reputation.
- Character Development: Arguably gets more in Marie Route than in the main story. First off, he learns that a woman's appearance is completely insignificant compared to her personality. Second, learns the importance of being proactive (where in the main story, Leon is always reacting). Third, instead of avoiding Kingdom politics as much as possible, he basically creates his own political faction.
- Comically Missing the Point: Leon thinks the Roseblade sisters blushing from Nick’s tirade was indignation. He’s instantly proven wrong.
- Defied Trope: The Point of Divergence is caused by Leon defying Marie’s attempts at pulling a Hijacked Destiny and Hostile Show Takeover against Olivia.
- Disaster Dominoes: Leon preventing Marie from seducing the princes starts one of these. Somewhat ironic, considering the opening scene of the route could easily be seen as a Set Right What Once Went Wrong plot.
- The Dreaded: Downplayed, he ends up feared and respected for his martial accomplishments.
- Dueling Scar: The Black Knight gives him one, that gets him called ugly.
- Everyone Can See It: Gets bitter looks from his fellow poor noblemen, and pointed remarks from Daniel and Raymond, over it, with regard to Marie. Arguably, them acting Like Brother and Sister comes off as seeming Like an Old Married Couple to their surroundings due to the horrid state of gender relations in the society they live in."Leon, I’ve been thinking this from some time ago but, are you an idiot?"
- Eyepatch of Power: To cover for the fact Luxion healed the damage he received to his eye from his Dueling Scar. This leads to Leon wearing a mask.
- Eye Scream: The Black Knight stabs him in the eye through Arroganz's armor. He gets Luxion to restore his eye but keeps the scar since it would be too suspicious if he survived without some kind of disfigurement.
- Famed In-Story: In addition to his pre-Point of Divergence fame, his actions in the second and fourth parts increase his renown and fearsome reputation. Leon is genuinely looked up to by his fellow poor noblemen, instead of blackmailing them.
- Finishing Stomp: How he obliterates Chris’s mech after Julius double-crosses him.
- Fixing the Game: A pointed aversion, as Marie refuses to gamble, even though it'd be an easy source of money. He does it once to help out Olivia whose bullies forced her into a card game.
- Grievous Harm with a Body: Defeats Brad by hitting his mech with Greg's, after Julius double-crosses him.
- Guile Hero: While mostly an Action Hero in the main story, he’s more of this here, preferring stealth when action is required. When adequately motivated by Tranquil Fury, Leon sets up a political Chain of Deals, leaving him with his own political faction.
- Hypocritical Humor: A Running Gag, with Leon criticizing Marie’s past-life brother, who he doesn’t realize is himself.
- Identical Grandson: Leon's appearance turns out to be very similar to an ancestor of his: Liia, who was leader of the group of seven adventurers who founded the Kingdom, only to be betrayed by each of them except Saintess Anne who loved him. Liia left for the Call to Agriculture and founded Leon’s House, his importance erased from history. When the ghosts of Anne see Leon, one is happy to see him together with her descendant (Marie), and the other wants to claim him for herself by any means.
- Irony: Leon used to complain about the Black Knight for giving him headaches in the game, but little did he know that he would become the Black Knight himself for defeating the main characters of the game.]]
- Knight Templar Big Brother: Leon's over-protectiveness of Marie, which she appreciates, partly stems from her "resembling" his past-life sister. Leon having the thought that she really could be said sister prompts his Roaring Rampage of Rescue, before deciding she's not his sister, prompts his wedding proposal.
- Like an Old Married Couple: With Marie.
- Loving Bully: Leon shows shades of this with his teasing of Marie.
- Magnetic Hero: See Ragtag Bunch of Misfits.
- A Match Made in Stockholm: However brief, Leon’s Meet Cute with Marie is kidnapping her to prevent her stealing Olivia’s first encounter with Julius.
- Metronomic Man Mashing: Leon uses Arroganz to do this to a terrified Julius, after Julius dishonored their arrangement for Leon to throw their duel.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Gets "bad premonitions" when something is happening to Olivia.
- Not Blood Siblings: Justified. He and Marie were blood siblings, but due to reincarnation, aren’t anymore. This helps Leon to be protective of her.
- Official Couple: As the title suggests, he and Marie are this.
- Passive-Aggressive Kombat: With Nicks, mostly one sided. It even extends to his Inner Monologue.
- Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Gives one to the Black Knight that’s a Shout-Out to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.You should have gone for the cockpit!
- Properly Paranoid: About Marie's safety after giving her the Saintess' amulet. Marie is flattered by his overprotectiveness, and Leon embarrassed. This results in Luxion putting a swarm of Surveillance Drones around her, and capturing Anne's ghost.
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Leon collects a strange group of allies. It starts off with Marie, most of the poor noblemen, Marie's collection of dysfunctional shut-in girls, and the Bunny-Ears Lawyer House Roseblade. It then expands to a fugitive Clarice and her Badass Biker followers, a ghost of a long-dead saintess, and a disgraced and bent-on-revenge Angelica.
- "Rashomon"-Style: This is how he and Marie come to the conclusion that they weren’t past-life-siblings.
- Relationship Upgrade: Proposes to Marie after crashing her wedding, and she’s referred to as sister-in-law by his family there-after.
- Safe Under Blankets: Leon’s instinct after seeing a ghost is to do this, which Marie happily teases him for.
- Secret Legacy: The founder of House Bartfort, Liia, was one of the seven adventurers that founded the Kingdom, but was betrayed by five of the others (Holfort, Marmoria, Arclight, Field, and Seburg). This could technically count as a Really Royalty Reveal, as he was the leader of the group, making Holfort a usurper.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: Insists this about Marie to his brother Nicks, and his observant friends, for a while.
- Start My Own: Instead of piggybacking on Duke Redgrave and his faction like in the main story, Leon and Marie assemble their own Ragtag Bunch of Misfits political faction from scratch, with most of the poor noblemen, the marriage candidates Marie finds for them, and House Roseblade as a base.
- When the Kingdom goes to war, and Prince Julius starts a volunteer army, Jilk creates a campaign of harassment to force people to join. Not wanting to interfere directly with the Otome plot by joining, and to keep their friends safe from both the harassment and the battlefield, Leon and Marie decide to make their own volunteer army and have it do logistics missions. This results in the boys of Leon's faction making up most of the surviving boys in the Academy, due to Julius' army being Cannon Fodder.
- Throwing the Fight: Offers to do this for Julius in this version of Angelica’s duel challenge in return for showing mercy to House Redgrave. He does a good job of it, only for Julius to double cross him, resulting in an unofficial Curb-Stomp Battle.
- Tired of Running: Specifically, of running from the spotlight. In the sixth part, Leon declares to Marie that he's done letting problems fester by doing that any longer.
- Unstoppable Rage: The Black Knight stabbing his father and gloating about it drives Leon into one, that results in the Black Knight’s death, with some help from Nicks.
- Wall Pin of Love: Does this to stop Marie from escaping when preventing her seduction of Julius.
- Weakness Turns Her On: Leon's phobia of ghosts seems to have this effect on Marie and Anne's ghost from the Saintess' amulet.
- What a Drag: Does this to Jilk’s mech after Julius double crosses him.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Ghosts elicit this reaction, much to Marie's amusement.
- Wild Card: This is how Leon is perceived by Julius, based on what he saw at meetings in the Royal Court his parents made him attend.
- You Are in Command Now: Balcus first leaves Leon in charge of his barony, which Leon then pawns onto Deirdre while he attends the Academy.
- After the Civil War breaks out, Balcus makes Leon dynastic head of the Bartfort Household.
- You Remind Me of X: Marie reminds him of his past life younger sister, because she is her reincarnation. This leads to Marie denying she could be anything like that horrible person.
Luxion
Luxion in Marie Route
- “Looks like master has finally resolved himself.”
- The Cavalry Arrives Late: Arrives only after the Black Knight very nearly kills Leon during the fleet battle with the Principality of Fanoss. At least he healed Leon's injured eye.
- For Science!: It’s shown that he keeps a number of creatures as test subjects inside of his main body, prompting Marie to ask him What the Hell, Hero?, to which he averts his gaze and forcibly changes the subject.
- Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Proves that despite all the things he's good at, picking someone's accessories is not one of them.
- Sequence Breaking: Gives Leon and Marie the idea to do this. It turns out that the summoners of the Final Boss were Unwitting Pawns to The Woman Behind the Man, the Saintess possessing Olivia, and they still have to fight the Principality’s fleet in a tough battle anyhow.
- Shoot the Hostage Taker: When Earl Offrey's son takes Marie hostage when confronted by Leon at their wedding, to try and save himself, Luxion snipes his arm with a laser.
- Walking the Earth: Due to Leon’s pro-active stance about preventing final-boss like beings from appearing, he sends Luxion investigating all over the world. He ends up getting a little too preoccupied with it.
Marie Fou Lafan
Marie Fou Lafan in Marie Route
- "Even personality is an important factor. What I want to say is that those five are failures in that respect."
- Amplifier Artifact: Uses the Saint's Necklace in her confrontation with The Saintess in Part 8 to enhance her magic.
- Anger Born of Worry: In the sixth part, she directs a fair amount of this at Leon for his reckless behavior.
- Appearance Angst: Due to not fitting Leon's Type, thanks to her determined efforts to learn healing magic halting her growth. She was more confident in her past-life body.
- At Least I Admit It: Admits in a dream to The Saintess’s spirit trying to possess her, that she’s a bro-con.
- Battle in the Center of the Mind: What happens when a ghost attempts to possess her; this is also implied to have happened in the main story with similar results: Marie's easy triumph.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Her general dynamic with Leon here, in particular returning with him from his hot spring, where they argue fiercely but end up Holding Hands.
- Big Brother Attraction: She likes that Leon "resembles" her past-life brother.
- Big Eater: Loves eating, having grown up without having much to eat. She can tuck away at least 10 plates of steak.
- Blue with Shock: When The Black Knight, who was That One Boss and the main reason she foisted the Otome Game on Leon, attacks Cool Airship Partner with her on it.
- As well as when she hears that Julius is intent on crushing Leon's Household, and it looking like Luxion has destroyed the Alzer Republic.
- Call on Me:
- Leon crashing her wedding is dramatically timed to her calling out to him in her thoughts.
- Wins a Battle in the Center of the Mind by summoning a projection of Leon with a baseball bat.
- Change the Uncomfortable Subject: Marie does this naturally at just the right times to avoid seeming like a Clingy Jealous Girl.
- Commonality Connection: With Leon, due to having Japanese values as opposed to the pseudo-medieval-western values of the Kingdom, and being poor, low status nobles. Despite being a woman, it turns out, without the princes helping her out, she’s not much better off than Leon.
- Deuteragonist: Of the What If? Marie Route.
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: The most powerful magic user in the Kingdom’s history gets shut up and kicked out of her subconscious, but not before Marie threatens to haunt said ghost for eternity.
- Dysfunction Junction: She assembles, and is caretaker for a growing group of shut in noble girls, to help Leon's fellow poor noblemen find wives who aren't awful.
- Embarrassing Nickname: After seeing her envy of Olivia being dubbed The Goddess of Victory, Leon dubs Marie The Goddess of Material Transport.
- Fanservice Pack: Defied Trope. Due to her Appearance Angst over her second-life body’s lack of growth, she pleads with Luxion to give her plastic surgery, but he refuses.
- Fantastically Indifferent: Her first reaction to seeing a ghost is to laugh scornfully at, and mock it.“There are things even scarier than ghosts in this world. Reality is far more scary."
- Food as Bribe: Her price for matchmaking for the poor noble students (basically securing their futures) is pudding from the school cafeteria.
- Friends Are Chosen, Family Aren't: Marie essentially builds her own family to replace her neglectful at best second-life blood family.
- Humanoid Abomination: During her Battle in the Center of the Mind, her hair turns into tentacles and her eyes shine. Even despite all of that, she still summons a representation of Leon, to handle the invader.
- Hypocritical Humor: Like with Leon, it’s a Running Gag that she criticizes Leon’s past-life sister, but this takes it up a notch:"Leon’s little sister in the previous life was like that wasn’t she? A woman who liked to play innocent right? Don’t group me with that kind of detestable fellow. But, if she also liked to drink than she might become a good drinking partner. I’ll punch her if she is just a hypocrite woman though."
- Immune to Mind Control: Attributed to her closed heart from trusting the wrong people in the past.
- I Was Quite a Looker: Mentions this about her past-life, doing some Fanservice Model poses while reminiscing.
- Karmic Jackpot: Because she and Leon are working together instead of in opposition, with her helping his fellow poor nobles find nice girls to marry, this results in not only their combined efforts freeing her from her abusive family and bringing her out of Perpetual Poverty, but she even ends up getting engaged to Leon and happier than she had been in both of her lives.
- Like an Old Married Couple: With Leon.
- Life Saving Misfortune: Leon stops her before she could get her reverse harem. She later admits it was for the best, finding them rather dull and lacking in charm.
- Little Sister Heroine: While Marie was initially conceived as a heavy handed subversion, here she is quite an unusual example. She doesn't realize Leon is her past-life brother, he just reminds her of him.
- Locked Out of the Loop: Averted. Leon tells her what she didn’t know before she could do any damage like she did in the main story.
- Love Epiphany: When being carried home by Leon after fleeing the party.
- The Matchmaker: Marie’s handling of The Shut-In girls from the academy is a large scale example. At least she gets paid for it (which she only charges a token amount, when she could get away with charging an arm and a leg due to the boys' desperation).
- The Medic: Skips classes to heal wounded kids, and gets covered in blood treating wounded refugees.
- Mental World: Hers is represented as her past-life bedroom, when The Saintess invades 'her heart'. She seems to have her past-life body there as well.
- Motifs: Night-time is used as a theme for her romance with Leon, such as when Marie has her Love Epiphany, and when Leon proposes marriage.
- Money Fetish: While Luxion does make fun of Marie once for liking money, after she's freed from her family and the debts they were causing, this is ultimately Averted.
- Mugging the Monster: When The Saintess' spirit tries to possess Marie, it ends up being the one terrified.
- Mundane Luxury: She couldn't afford new socks or underwear and gets excited when Leon offers to buy them for her.
- Not Blood Siblings: Justified. Her and Leon, who were blood siblings before they each reincarnated. Marie seems to see Leon's "resemblance" to him as a plus.
- Official Couple: As the title suggests, she's this with Leon.
- One of the Kids: When with Leon’s little brother Colin. Her reacting to his teasing furthers his view of her as like a sibling his own age.
- Promoted to Love Interest: Compared to the original story.
- Rage Breaking Point: Seeing many girls of the Academy happily celebrating While Rome Burns in the middle of a bloody war infuriates Marie. This builds up until a girl telling Yulia she should be happy her lover died, and calling Leon ugly, makes Marie snap into an Unstoppable Rage.
- "Rashomon"-Style: This is how she and Leon come to the conclusion that they weren't past-life siblings.
- Relationship Upgrade: After Leon crashes her Arranged Marriage wedding, and proposes to her.
- Role Swap AU: Has her role swapped with Olivia in this universe. This only becomes evident after Olivia gets possessed, becoming an Evil Counterpart to Marie’s main route self.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Gets "bad premonitions" when something is happening to Olivia.
- Secret Legacy: The reason behind her healing power and being recognized by the Holy Relics, is due to being descended from the First Saintess. This also makes it possible for said Saintess, who left behind multiple Vengeful Ghosts in the Holy Relics, to attempt to possess her, although Marie's heart is too closed for that, and her unconscious throws The Saintess out.
- Spoiled Brat: Marie gets teased by Leon and Luxion over her spoiled tendencies, but also admired for her work ethic when selling doughnuts.
- Sympathy for the Devil: Shows this towards The Saintess.
- Tastes Like Friendship: She and Leon start bonding after he notices she's hungry and buys her all the food she can eat.
- Team Mom: She takes up the task of being caretaker to her assembled Dysfunction Junction of shut-in girls to help the poor noblemen find decent wives. As well, Marie treats the newly created A.I. installed in Arroganz like her child.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Steak. She also enjoys sweets with tea that Leon makes.
- Trapped by Gambling Debts: This element is built on compared to the main story, with debt collectors breaking into her dorm room, and her parents telling her to spend her vacation time earning money in the dungeon. Eventually escalates to them selling off her hand in marriage to the Offrey Household, incurring Leon’s Tranquil Fury and getting her family stripped of their nobility and land.
- The Unfavorite: Since her (second-life) family situation is explored in more depth here, it turns out that her older sister wastes money freely, while conversely, the whole family leans on Marie to help pay the bills.
- Unknown Rival: To Olivia, envying her success and Leon’s obvious attraction to her.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend: Turns menacing at the prospect of Leon being taken from her, besides the whole girl calling Leon ugly incident.
- Virgin-Shaming: Gives Leon a taste of his own teasing medicine with this in an argument, before Holding Hands.
- What the Hell, Hero?: The result of her probing after finding out about the tests Luxion does on creatures he keeps inside his main body."…This guy, is he perhaps not considering anyone else other than us humans?"
- Willing Channeler: Offers to let The Saintess possess her in exchange for releasing Olivia, allowing her to be with Lea's descendant through her. Though she makes it clear that she's not giving up control so much as she's allowing them to stay inside of her so they can realize their wish through her happiness with Leon.
- You Are Not Alone: Marie is betrayed by her family, who sell her off to clear their debts, leaving her feeling abandoned by everyone except her past-life brother. Then, that brother, who she just then sees in Leon, rescues her with the help of all the poor nobles she's been aiding, showing that her efforts to make a Family of Choice have paid off.
- You Remind Me of X: Leon reminds her of her past life older brother, because he is his reincarnation. This leads to Leon denying he could be anything like that horrible person.
- Young Entrepreneur: Runs a successful doughnut stand at the School Festival. In her childhood, she would also exchange furs of animals she killed to buy secondhand clothing.
The Remaining Original Main Characters
Olivia
Olivia in Marie Route
- “Why won’t he (Julius) leave me alone?”
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Conversed Trope. In-Universe Leon and Marie both came to the conclusion early on, that she was horrible for stealing Angelica’s fiancé. The two end up being overheard gossiping about the situation, which springs the bullying of Olivia into high gear, and possibly killed her interest in Julius, whose route Luxion determined she was on.
- Break the Cutie: Poor Livia goes through much worse torment than the main storyline. She is chased around by the five most popular guys in school and harassed by bullies, and later, gets possessed by the evil spirit of the first saint.
- Bound and Gagged: How her mind is represented within her Mental World while she’s possessed.
- Bully Magnet: Much more of one here than in the main route, as the bullies are driven by jealousy of her time spent with the Five Princes and her social status. She'd been better off with Marie stealing them.
- Demonic Possession: The Holy Relics each hold a Vengeful Ghost fragment of the first saintess Anne, capable of possessing her descendants. When Olivia comes into contact with the Saintess' Bracelet, it possesses her due to her soft heart and resentment of the five princes. Olivia becomes trapped within her own body, while Anne manipulates everyone towards destruction in her place.
- Demoted to Extra: She's still important, but no longer one of the main heroines here.
- Fighting from the Inside: First, when she tries to strangle herself. Secondly, when she reasserts control to beg Leon for help, and hides his identity from her possessor.
- He Will Come for Me: After seeing Leon a second time and breaking through her possession to plead for his help, Olivia holds onto the hope of Leon rescuing her, remembering how he helped her with the card game.
- Hope Spot: Leon visiting her, gives her hope that he can free her from Demonic Possession.
- Interrupted Suicide: Tries to strangle herself in the bath due to her Demonic Possession, but fails.
- Leave Me Alone!: What she wants to tell the five capture targets, but is too afraid to due to their status.
- Life Saving Misfortune: Marie Route reveals that both on a personal and a meta level, Marie usurping Olivia as protagonist in the main timeline was the best thing that could have happened to her.
- Unequal Pairing: Deconstructed. The power imbalance between her and the five capture targets means she can't turn them down once they have their sights set on her, and their presumed relationship draws resentment from the rest of the school.
- Unwanted Harem: Since Marie was prevented from interfering. Olivia just wants to study, but due to the five dateable cast being high nobles and her a commoner, she can't refuse their constant date requests, and she starts to resent them. This has consequences when it helps the first Saintess' Vengeful Ghost possess her, said possession being why she seemed willing in later Otome Game events, to manipulate them.
Angelica Rapha Redgrave
Angelica Rapha Redgrave in Marie Route
- “…that saintess. No, that witch, I won’t tolerate her even if I have to fall into hell.”
- Anger Montage: Trashes her cabin in Partner out of anger at Leon for Throwing the Fight as her duel challenge champion.
- Cassandra Truth: About (Saintess-possessed) Olivia being evil and colluding with Marquess Frampton. By the time she finds out, she’s in such a bad mental state, that she comes off as a raving madwoman.
- Demoted to Extra: She's still important, but no longer one of the main heroines here.
- Despair Event Horizon: After discovering the truth behind the war from Hertrude, and having her engagement broken.
- Exact Words: Leon noted originally that her fate after losing her duel with the protagonist's Reverse Harem in the Otome Game was to be forced to marry an ugly noble from the countryside. In Marie Route, that nobleman turns out to be none other than Leon himself, who's considered ugly after his face is scarred. He manages to talk it down to just keeping her safe while pretending to be in talks.
- Freak Out: It turns out that the original version of Angelica Throwing Down the Gauntlet, was part of one of these.
- Girl in the Tower: Is imprisoned like this due to fears for her sanity.
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: Once she's pushed past her Despair Event Horizon and starts her quest for revenge. It symbolizes her similarity to Saintess Anne's extreme quest for revenge; said vengeful spirit having such glowing red eyes.
- Identical Stranger: It turns out she's somewhat of an example of this to the kingdom-founding Saintess Anne, at least according to her vengeful spirit, having similar personalities as well as appearances.
- Magic Pants: Averted. Angelica's super-powered rampage destroys all of her clothing.
- Meet Cute: When she sits on a bench with Leon and eats the doughnuts he offers her. This turns out to be one of the few happy memories she has in her life.
- No-Sell: Can resist The Saintess' Compelling Voice through sheer force of will and hatred.
- The Power of Hate: Her eyes glow from this, and more.
- Revenge: Eventually dedicates herself to getting revenge on Olivia.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Breaking out of her imprisonment in a whirlwind of fire while laughing sadly, flying across the sky to try and get revenge on the Saintess.
- Secret Legacy: Being descended from the Saintess Anne’s sister, which seems to be the source of her super powers that are more than a normal human can handle.
- Stepford Smiler: During her childhood, when she couldn't handle the pressures of being a Proper Lady, she'd hide away in a storage room and cry to herself.
- Traumatic Superpower Awakening: A 'dark flame' inside of her, and Glowing Eyes of Doom. Her powers include flight and wrapping herself in a lot of fire.
The Five Dateable Cast
The Five Dateable Cast generally in Marie Route
- Abhorrent Admirer: All of them are this to Olivia. She resents them for taking up so much of her time and attracting jealous bullies to her, causing a never-ending amount of stress for her. Worse still, she can't voice her complaints because she fears the potential consequences of defying nobility.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: All show signs of becoming this, none more so than Julius. Sequestering Olivia in a house and letting no one else enter, for instance.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Their response to even the tiniest mistreatment of Olivia they hear about, is to try to outdo each other and earn her approval. In doing so, they expel a good chunk of the school and blow apart the faction supporting Julius as heir.
- It's All About Me: The five pushing themselves onto Olivia, and being more interested in the affection they can get from her, rather than her own wellbeing, makes them each an example. But Julius and Jilk take the cake. Jilk with his treatment of Clarice and stated willingness to throw Julius under the bus to have Olivia for himself, and Julius with his not caring about anyone else whatsoever.
- Jerkass at Your Discretion: The impression they give off to Marie after she fails to seduce them due to Leon’s interference, is that they’re nice to Olivia, and only her.
- Killed Off for Real: Greg, Chris, and Brad are killed during Part 8 as they attempt to defend the capital and Olivia from the alliance of nobles.
- Love Makes You Dumb: This was mostly a source of comedy and suffering for Marie in the main story. Here, it serves a much darker purpose.
- Love Ruins the Realm: They don’t get disinherited, and thus can do a lot more damage. It doesn’t help that the woman they’re in love with is actually trying to destroy the realm.
- Redshirt Army: Their Volunteer Army consists of inexperienced students in the war.
- Removing the Rival: Once Leon catches their ire, they take this mindset, starting with forcing Leon to wear an ugly mask and cooperating to make sure he has no chance to talk to Olivia. Eventually it escalates to Jilk and Julius deciding to Murder the Hypotenuse over a misunderstanding.
- Senseless Sacrifice: The Child Soldiers they send to their deaths, unbeknownst to them.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: As opposed to their Friendly Rivalry with one another in the main story, here there is bullying between them and desperation to get ahead.
- To Absent Friends: They and their forces cope with high casualty rates by drinking rowdily.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Due to The Saintess manipulating them.
- Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Each of them, when dueling Leon, who they arranged to throw the fight.
- Unwitting Pawn: The Saintess possessing Olivia manipulates them easily to destroy the kingdom from within. With the otome game scenes being set up by her before she acts out her part.
- War Is Glorious: Wholeheartedly believe in, and loudly espouse this.
Julius Rapha Holfort
Julius Rapha Holfort in Marie Route
- "I’ll remove any fool who dare to lay his hand on Olivia. Olivia is mine alone."
- Backing Away Slowly: In fear of Leon’s Tranquil Fury after having Curb Stomp Battled the other four due to Julius double-crossing him.
- Bandage Mummy: After Leon gets his revenge for Julius double-crossing him.
- Chest of Medals: While he probably earned two of them through minor accomplishments, he puts on more out of ego and keeps up appearances.
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Tore apart his political alliances with full awareness and without a shred of regret, and double-crosses Leon.
- Evil Laugh: After he beheads Marquess Frampton.
- I Lied: Goes back on his arrangement with Leon to throw their duel, resulting in Leon beating the four other princes in a quick Curb-Stomp Battle, and giving Julius a Metronomic Man Mashing.
- Like Father, Like Son: They both think that the Masked Knight's mask is cool, while everyone else is appalled by it.
- Love Makes You Evil: Ordered Leon’s home island to be burnt to the ground, people included.
- Murder the Hypotenuse: After Leon publicly beats the princes in a Curb-Stomp Battle after being double-crossed, Leon was discovered to have embraced Olivia, who hushed it up, and they think that Leon is harboring someone who attacked them and Olivia. Thus, Julius and Jilk decide to murder Leon and crush his Household.
- This Cannot Be!: Leon being appointed Olivia’s knight.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Leon works hard to throw their fight, and make the proceeding matches look close for Julius. Julius repays this by publicly disgracing Angelica and telling Leon he was a fool to trust their verbal agreement.
- We Have Reserves: Doesn’t care how many Child Soldiers have to die as long as it will make Olivia like him more than the others.
- The Wrongful Heir to the Throne: This version of Julius being King would be a monumental disaster. And he hasn’t been disinherited.
- Yandere: Tells Leon during their duel, that nobody else’s life matters to him as long as he has Olivia.
House Bartfort
Balcus Fou Bartfort
Balcus Fou Bartfort in Marie Route
- "I see. So you're still a stupid kid.”
- Anger Born of Worry: Of Leon having caused a Civil War with the Kingdom, suggesting he’d smack Leon if not for his injuries.
- Papa Wolf: Charges onto Partner's deck after seeing the Black Knight heading towards it, intending to sacrifice himself to let his son Leon escape. Both his sons team up to win the fight, but not before he Takes the Bullet for Leon, leaving Balcus hospitalized.
- Passing the Torch: Retires and makes Leon dynastic head of the Bartfort Household, due to his own injury and indecision.
- Secret-Keeper: It's implied he knows the whole story behind Liia Bartfort and the original Saintess. He's only offered a few scraps so far, and told his sons they shouldn't know.
- Secret Legacy: He's revealed that his, and by extension Leon's ancestor Liia, was part of the adventuring party formed by the five dateable cast's ancestors, that founded the Kingdom, but was tricked and fled to live in peace on a remote island.
- Shipper on Deck: Expects Leon and Marie to marry after she spends a month at their home.
- Succession Crisis: After he gets severely injured, someone must be acting family head and Feudal Overlord for their Household, and Zola and her son Rutart show up to claim it. House Roseblade honors their marriage alliance with Nicks, and drives them off, leaving Leon in charge.
- Taking the Bullet: Does this to save Leon from the Black Knight, and barely survives.
Nicks Fou Bartfort
Nicks Fou Bartfort in Marie Route
- "A brother who cares about his family wouldn't sell his brother out to some woman!"
- Arranged Marriage: For the sake of an alliance with House Roseblade, Leon forces him to marry the supposedly sadistic Dorothea.
- Ascended Extra: From being Mr. Exposition to a plot pivotal character involved in romance, noble politics, and two Sibling Rivalries. Elements of his expanded role here were folded into the main story after the fact.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Nicks complains about having a tough time finding a wife (in the main story as well). When he gets one, it's more than he bargained for.
- Big Damn Heroes: Protecting Leon and Balcus from The Black Knight in the fleet battle against the Principality.
- Butt-Monkey: Leon loves rubbing in his Arranged Marriage with sarcasm, and threatening to talk to his wife about him.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: His ambush of Rutart’s force sent to annihilate Balcus’ barony.
- Draw Aggro: Nicks' last-minute distraction allows Leon to kill the Black Knight.
- Henpecked Husband: A source of comedy, and a weak point for Leon to exploit in arguments.
- If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Expresses a similar sentiment to Leon about Marie, after hearing about her tough (second-life) childhood.
- Insult Backfire: Tries to offend Dorothea to wriggle out of their Arranged Marriage, only for it to earn her respect and affection instead.
- My Own Private "I Do": Dorothea insists on a private wedding before their normal one, with her vows giving Leon and Marie chills.
- Property of Love: This the sort of relationship Dorothea hopes to have with Nicks. Insisting they both wear slave collars during their wedding, much to both families' chagrin. Nicks doesn't seem enthused.
- Ruling Couple: With Dorothea, as Earl of a floating island, as a result of Leon’s dealings.
- Sibling Rivalry: This is two-fold. First, Nicks holds a grudge against Leon for setting up his Arranged Marriage, although it's mostly Played for Laughs. The two have a more serious mutual rivalry with Rutart, whom Nicks planned to murder via Unfriendly Fire.
- The rivalry with Rutart meets a bloody end when Nicks ambushes Rutart's task force sent to annihilate Balcus' floating island barony.
- Slave Collar: What Dorothea makes him wear in their private wedding, with her wearing one as well, in place of wedding rings.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Says this multiple times to Leon for setting up his Arranged Marriage. Unlike the trope's usual usage in Japanese works, he relents somewhat, after learning how rough Marie's childhood was.
- Unfriendly Fire: How Nicks hoped to end his Sibling Rivalry with Rutart. Nicks didn't get the chance, due to Rutart being too cowardly to show up for battle.
Rutart Fou Bartfort
Rutart in Marie Route
Zola’s son who lives with her in the capitol. Legally the First Son and heir of the Bartfort Household, due to inherit Balcus’ barony upon his death. He’s actually a bastard via Zola’s lover, and resents the success of his two "brothers".- Ascended Extra: Goes from being a background character with only one speaking appearance, to having First-Person Perspective scenes.
- Bastard Bastard: Leon and Dorothea both figured out that he’s the son of Zola’s lover instead of Balcus.
- Bling of War: Wears a fancy pseudo military outfit to compensate for his lack of prestige compared to his "brothers"; it just gets him laughed at.
- Can't Catch Up: Can’t match the accomplishments, assets, and prestige of his two "brothers".
- Dirty Coward: Is widely mocked for this by his countrymen for not going to war, losing his Knighthood. To be fair on him, he had learned that the battle he skipped out on was an Uriah Gambit, and Nicks could well have shot him down in the chaos.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: Feels like his younger "brothers" overshadowing him has made him a laughing stock. And indeed, other men laugh at him behind his back.
- Idle Rich: What Leon suspects his life is like in the capitol. He’s at least treated better by Zola than Leon and Nicks are.
- Lineage Comes from the Father: He has physical traits from his true father instead of Balcus, hinting about him being illegitimate.
- The Resenter: Of Leon and Nicks. Rutart's mother Zola and sister Merce rubbing it in only encourages the grudge.
- Royal Brat: Entitled, impatient, ambitious, puts on airs, disrespectful.
- Sibling Rivalry: Wants to seize control of Nicks' territory, which is much more substantial compared to Balcus’ barony that Rutart is legally due to inherit. It was given to Nicks specifically to keep it out of Rutart’s hands and he knows it.
- Rutart plots with Julius against Balcus and his blood family, being promised a court rank in the capital for burning Balcus’ barony to the ground. Before Nicks ambushes him.
- Successful Sibling Syndrome: Rutart's prime motivation. His struggle with Nicks and Leon evokes a typical Princeling Rivalry on a smaller scale. When Balcus dies, Rutart is due to be a Baron, while Nicks is already an Earl, and Leon a feared faction leader and duelist with a powerful Cool Airship. This has a large impact on Rutart's status, contrasting his staying home in their Asskicking Leads to Leadership culture that venerates adventurers.
- Succession Crisis: Balcus being severely injured by The Black Knight causes one, which Zola takes advantage of with Rutart and her daughter Merce in tow. The Roseblade sisters drive them out and chastise Rutart at the Royal Court.
- Sympathy for the Devil: Leon feels some sympathy for Rutart. Zola and his blood-sister Merce are pressuring him after all.
- Underestimating Badassery: Thinks of Leon and Nicks' martial accomplishments as exaggerated rumors.
- Unwitting Pawn: He was sent against Leon by Julius to help vilify Leon, knowing Rutart would lose, so that he could sell Rutart’s defeat as a Heroic Sacrifice.
Daniel, Raymond, and the Poor Noblemen
The Poor Noblemen in Marie Route
Initially staring daggers at Leon for seemingly finding a good girlfriend so quickly, while they are left behind. After Marie helps them find good matches, they essentially serve as Leon and Marie's followers.- Ascended Extra: More prominent and important here than in the main story.
- Cock Fight: The Shut-In marriage candidates Marie prepares for them, lead to a lot of competition and outright duels within the group.
- Fire-Forged Friends: They unite under Leon’s leadership after he rallys them to rescue Marie from her forced Arranged Marriage, and crush the involved Houses Lafan and Offrey.
- Grew a Spine: Leon and Marie’s repeated aid and cooperation eventually lets them stand up to the vicious noble girls of the Academy at the party in the route’s fifth part, something impossible before.
- Misfit Mobilization Moment: When Marie is forced out of the Academy by her parents to go into an Arranged Marriage against her will, Leon rallies them to help rescue her. They rely on her help to find decent marriage candidates, and many consider themselves to owe her a favor for charging such a low price for it.
- Neck Lift: Daniel does this to Raymond upon learning that he managed to successfully court a noble girl, which leaves Daniel the last of the three friends single.
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: They make up the most normal section of Leon and Marie’s ragtag faction. That being said, they do squabble over girls a lot.
- Roaring Rampage of Rescue: When Leon mobilizes them to rescue Marie and crash her wedding.
- Too Good to Be True: What they suspect of Marie’s offers introducing The Shut-In noble girls to them, who are much fairer marriage candidates than the typical academy girls, who usually make exorbitant and unfair demands.
Arroganz
Arroganz
Luxion upgrades Leon's mech Arroganz into a newborn A.I., to take care of Leon while he himself is away. Arroganz is child-like, at first struggling to move properly, prompting Marie to teach and raise him.- An Arm and a Leg: Deliberately loses an arm in the arena as part of Leon's plan to eventually lose against the five Princes. Doesn't hinder him from his Roaring Rampage of Revenge on those princes not long after.
- Awesome, yet Impractical: His Mid-Season Upgrade armaments are so demanding that he needs minor A.I.s with him to manage it all.
- The Baby of the Bunch: His first appearance has him bumbling around like a toddler, and Marie encourages and is protective of him like one.
- Empathic Weapon: Of the Mini-Mecha variety. Much like Luxion, he is an emotional A.I., with the most notable example being his What the Hell, Hero? moment.
- Gatling Good: Gets equipped with several Gatling guns for More Dakka to fight The Swarm of monsters.
- Haunted Technology: What a number of Leon's faction think happened to his armor, since a society without computers would have difficulty grasping the concept of A.I.
- Like a Son to Me: Marie sees him like her child.
- Like Father, Unlike Son: Arroganz is Literal-Minded, honorable, and reckless, unlike his creator Luxion, who’s a Servile Snarker, Robotic Psychopath, and overprotective of his creations.
- Literal-Minded: Due to being a young A.I.
- Mid-Season Upgrade: In the sixth part, when he realizes he needs More Dakka, he asks for permission to be loaded up with weapons and armor as well as minor A.I.s to help him manage all of it.
- Overheating: Often covered in steam when over-exerting himself in combat.
- Robot Buddy: Fills in for the often absent Luxion as this.
- Throw-Away Guns: Likes to do this with guns (and armor), in contrast to Luxion who is extremely protective of his creations.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Gives Leon one when he tries to justify to himself doing nothing over Julius breaking his deal to not punish the Redgrave family after Leon throws their duel on behalf of Angelica. Leon essentially says that it's Somebody Else's Problem and that he doesn't care if they get hurt. Arroganz calls him a liar, and shames Leon into delivering an unofficial Curb-Stomp Battle to the five princes in retaliation.
House Roseblade
House Bartfort's main backers by marriage. Deirdre Fou Roseblade
Deidre Fou Roseblade in Marie Route
Doesn’t get yelled at by Leon here, so their dynamic is more casual.- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Just like her sister Dorothea, she is very skilled politically as well as helpful with said skill to her extended family the Bartforts.
- Gondor Calls for Aid: She’s dispatched to help protect the Bartfort household from being stolen by Zola in the family’s Succession Crisis.
- Luminescent Blush: Seeing Nicks insult Dorothea gives her one that Leon comically mistakes for indignation.
- Shut Up, Hannibal!: Gives one to Zola that sends her scurrying.
Dorothea Fou Roseblade
Dorothea Fou Roseblade
Deirdre’s older sister, who Leon arranges to be married off to his older brother Nicks to form an alliance with the feared Roseblade family, and help him manage his new domain as an Earl, since Nicks wasn’t properly educated to do so. She’s a bit too enthusiastic.
- Altar Diplomacy: Her wedding to Nicks was arranged to secure backing in order to keep Nicks' new Earldom from being taken away from him. Even Julius is cautious of the Roseblades.
- Ascended Extra: She was an entirely off-screen character in the Web-Novel that served as a rough draft for the franchise.
- Behind Every Great Man: She's basically the one running Nick’s Earldom.
- Brains and Bondage: Is clearly very intelligent to go along with her liking of bondage play with Nicks.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite all of her BDSM theming, she is extremely good at noble politics and intrigue.
- Canon Immigrant: Is getting adapted into the primary continuity as part of a similar plot.
- Dressed Like a Dominatrix: At least has the demeanor and theming of one.
- Gondor Calls for Aid: Sends her sister to help bail out Leon after Zola tries to seize the Bartfort Household in a Succession Crisis after Balcus is incapacitated for months.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: To the Bartfort Household and faction generally. Although, she clearly wears the pants in her marriage.
- Informed Attribute: Leon calls her sadistic and cold, but she shows a soft side when meeting Marie. Supposedly Luxion investigated the Roseblade family beforehand.
- Insult Backfire: Nicks tries to make her cancel their marriage by insulting and talking down to her. Instead, it just makes her blush and more attracted to Nicks because he is a rare male in the setting willing to stand up to a noblewoman.
- My Own Private "I Do": The compromise that’s reached after she demands a Slave Collar wedding, is having a private ceremony with that, before their traditional one.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: At least she sees her marriage with Nicks this way. With how much they help each other, there is some merit to the belief, even if Nicks is constantly angry with Leon for arranging it.
- Powerful People Are Subs: From one of the most powerful and feared noble households, also wants to be tied up in bed, and wear a Slave Collar at her wedding.
- Property of Love: Invoked Trope with her wedding vows, which gives Leon and Marie chills.
- Ruling Couple: For Nicks’ Earldom as his wife. She seems to do most of the work.
- Slave Collar: She insists on these in place of wedding rings for her wedding with Nicks.
House Atlee
Playing their original game role. Clarice Fia Atlee
Clarice Fia Atlee in Marie Route
A minor villainess serving her intended role in the game plot, but that's not the end for her.- A Day in the Limelight: The third part, partially serves as this for her.
- Facepalm: She and her followers all do this when, after hearing that the Palace is moving against him, Leon admits to having beat up Julius after their duel, which is just like what made them fugitives needing Leon's help in the first place.
- Frameup: She's framed for an attempt on Olivia's life and accused of attacking the Crown Prince as he isn't disowned in this timeline. It nearly gets her killed until Leon helps her escape and sends her off to hide on his island.
- Hope Is Scary: When realizing she still has the will to live when her guards are ambushed, with the intent of silencing her, before she's rescued.
- Noble Fugitive: Being hunted for attacking the Crown Prince and Olivia, after her followers were tricked into assaulting them.
- Sent Into Hiding: After being rescued by Leon. Being lax about staying out of sight ended up being an issue when Rutart saw her and told Julius she was at Leon’s estate.
- Team Mom: Takes care of Leon’s siblings when their parents aren’t there. Balcus recovering from severe injuries, and Luce tending to him. Leon’s little brother Colin ends up thinking she’ll be Leon’s wife due to this (and seeing Marie as a kid like himself).
Clarice’s Followers
Clarice’s Followers in Marie Route
Serving their original role as Mooks.- The Atoner: For being manipulated into attacking Olivia, and putting Clarice in danger.
- Determinator: Shrug off gun-shots, due to their Undying Loyalty.
- Elite Mooks: It’s shown clearly during a game event, that this was their role in the game.
- Unwitting Pawn: Frampton tricks them into attacking Olivia to get Clarice's Household out of his way.
- What the Hell Are You?: Julius' reaction to their fighting prowess and ignoring of bullets.
Other Holfort Academy
Master
Master in Marie Route
Now Leon’s primary political advisor, and source of connections in the Royal Court.- The Atoner: What little he reveals about his Mysterious Past when asking Leon to rescue Clarice and her followers.
- Almighty Janitor: He seemed to just be a teacher and retired knight in the main story. Here he shows he can pull quite a few strings.
- Apologetic Attacker: Towards Olivia, since he was the one who invited her into the Academy and it resulted in her being possessed.
- Big Good: Leon’s man inside the Royal Palace, since he doesn’t have Duke Redgrave or the Queen supporting him in this timeline.
- Caring Gardener: Is entrusted with tending the garden of a mansion.
- Cool Teacher: Still a passionate instructor of tea and etiquette. Also, it's implied that he was the one who taught Olivia how to use magic.
- Enemy Mine: Urging Leon to ally with the Principality of Fanoss to stop The Saintess.
- Everyone Has Standards: Reacts to Julius beheading Frampton and laughing like a madman with determination to free the Kingdom.
- Guile Hero: Mainly contributes using his knowledge and connections, not afraid to break the law in the process.
- Honest Advisor: A forthright yet polite advisor.
- I Have My Ways: Considering he was trusted by the queen in the main story, it’s likely at least partially through ties to her that he makes his arrangements.
- Killed Off for Real: He gets killed by the Saintess.
- Mysterious Past: Which he won’t say much about, besides that he is The Atoner.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Gets this role he had originally, drastically expanded upon.
- Remember When You Blew Up a Sun?: When Leon brags about his martial talent, Master quips that Leon having crushed Houses Lafan and Offrey makes his bragging an understatement.
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Organizing a prison break, and freeing a fugitive wanted for high-treason, when Clarice is framed.
- Take a Third Option: When Leon is faced with the choice of either enlisting in Julius’ Volunteer Army, which would interfere with the plot too much, or face Jilk’s severe bullying campaign each day, Master suggests Leon create his own logistics army to keep him and his faction away from both the bullying and battlefield.
Olivia's Bullies
Olivia's Bullies
(Marie Route Original). A group of three noble girls and their exclusive servants who terrorize Olivia, eventually cheating her at cards.- The Bully: At least since Leon and Marie accidently trash-talk Olivia in front of the whole school at the party.
- Bullying a Dragon: They know what Leon is capable of, but having set up a card cheating scheme and looking down on him for being an upstart, they think that they can humble him. Indeed, the only reason he was able to beat them at cards was because he had Luxion, which nobody but Marie knows about.
- Cornered Rattlesnake: Leon holding debts over them from the card game, makes them panic and try to Make It Look Like an Accident with their attempted murder of Olivia.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Ambushing Olivia in the dungeons to murder her by throwing her in a forbidden pit, which backfires when she survives, possessed, and makes them the first targets in her schemes. All Olivia did was let Leon pay back her debts.
- Fixing the Game: Have their Exclusive Servants peek at their opponent’s cards, keep cards up their sleeve, etc. all in the hopes of driving Olivia out of the academy. Which Luxion and Marie help expose when Leon plays with them.
- Hoist by Their Own Petard: If they had just kept to regular bullying instead of driving Olivia into ruin, they probably could have gotten away with it.
- Insult Backfire: Calling Leon an Upstart only gives him an Appropriated Appellation.
- Kick the Dog: Dragging a feverish Olivia out of bed and forcing her to gamble so she'd get Trapped by Gambling Debts.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Julius gets them expelled from the Academy for trying to kill Olivia.
- Make It Look Like an Accident: Their plan to murder Olivia was to make it look like one of the semi-yearly cases of students perishing fighting in the dungeons, specifically, falling down a pit.
- Oh, Crap!: Leon putting them into debt and threatening to crush their households (which they know he can do).
- A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Cheat Olivia at cards, get cheated in cards by Leon. Also, threatening her family, before Leon threatens theirs.
- Tears of Fear: When they beg Leon for forgiveness after he beats them at cards and threatens them.
- Villains Want Mercy: After Leon beats them at their own game. He puts their debts on hold as long as they don't try anything with Olivia but they don't learn.
- And Your Little Dog, Too!: Threaten Olivia’s hometown, which as a non-noble, she can’t do anything to defend. This, along with their servants physically blocking her escape, is what keeps her playing cards with them.
The Beaudon Brothers
Alan and Allen Beaudon
(Marie Route Original). Two rich, brash, and arrogant noble sons eager for battle when war strikes the Kingdom.- Cannon Fodder: Alan in Julius’ volunteer army. After his brother Allen's fruitless charge, Duke Redgraves subordinates accuse him as seeing them like this for not rescuing him.
- Child Soldier: Alan like the rest of the volunteer army.
- Glory Seeker: Both of them expect easy glory in battle and higher status. They meet an early end instead.
- Killed Offscreen: Alan, as befits an arrogant Red Shirt.
- Leeroy Jenkins: Allen during the Big Badass Battle Sequence with the Principality. Him charging ahead to die lowers Kingdom morale and damages the commander, Duke Redgrave’s reputation. At least the Duke didn't charge out in a futile attempt to rescue him.
- Peer-Pressured Bully: Alan is the face of Jilk’s bullying campaign to fill out Julius’ volunteer army, using his money and followers to do so.
- Pimped-Out Car: They have an airship equivalent, which as Jilk notes, a Luxury liner has no place on a battlefield. Alan offers it as Julius’ flagship, before his brother ultimately sends it to its doom.
- Red Shirt: Alan, who is Killed Offscreen.
- Royal Brat: Overconfident and aggressive ones, who think the fancy toys their parents lend them can handle anything.
- Senseless Sacrifice: Alan dies as part of an Uriah Gambit by the Saintess to destroy the kingdom’s nobility, while Allen just makes the battle against the Principality harder.
- Suicidal Overconfidence: Both of them, which gets them killed.
- Upper-Class Twit: Being Spear Counterpart to all the cruel girls in the Academy. Allen charging out of formation is especially notable in its stupidity.
- War Is Glorious: They both clearly buy into this.
Yulia
Yulia
(Marie Route Original). A Viscount's daughter who is in love with a lower class boyfriend she can't marry, and strikes up a friendship with Marie.- Martyrdom Culture: Tries to bury her sadness over her lover's death due to the kingdom having this.
- Overcome with Desire: Hardly lets Marie's questioning interfere with her lovemaking.
- Quit Your Whining: Gets essentially told this about her lover's death by a noble girl who has The Social Darwinist approach to picking lovers in contrast.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: Since they're nobles subject to noble politics, her lover is too low in status for her to marry, which is why he joins Julius' army.
Other Holfort Kingdom
Kyle
Kyle in Marie Route
He never drops his façade of being a cute servant kid, but has some suspicions about Olivia.- Aura Vision: All elves have this, allowing them to see others' magic capabilities, which is apparently how they perceive beauty. Kyle’s vision becomes relevant when he is able to notice a difference when Olivia becomes possessed by the Saintess, before she placates him. Later, once she absorbs another spirit from the Saintess’ Scepter, Kyle is terrified, and the Saintess holds his mother hostage to keep him quiet.
- Failed a Spot Check: When he first sees a change in Olivia with his Aura Vision when she is possessed, he doesn’t think much of it.
- I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: After he realizes that Olivia is possessed, the Saintess doing so holds his mother Yumeria hostage to keep him serving her.
- Oh, Crap!: Upon realizing something is horribly wrong with Olivia, even before she tells him she has his mother hostage.
- Unwanted Gift Plot: Kyle was an unwanted gift by Julius to Olivia. Since Olivia is a scholarship student, her finances aren't sustainable for both of them, so she is forced to grind in the dungeons as per the game. This, as one of many Disaster Dominoes, leads to Olivia being possessed by the first Saintess, causing untold carnage.
- Unwitting Pawn: To the Saintess possessing Olivia. Until he’s a very aware and utterly terrified one.
Duke Redgrave
Vince Rapha Redgrave in Marie Route
Doesn’t get involved with Leon so easily.- Benevolent Conspiracy: Against the Holfort Dynasty, mostly due to Julius's actions (which were caused by The Saintess).
- Frontline General: Even willing to board enemy ships.
- Overshadowed by Awesome: Despite seizing the enemy Princess from her flagship during the fleet battle with the Principality, the Bartfort family killing the Black Knight, and drawing the enemy fleet's fire so the rest could regroup, leaves Vince a target of ridicule.
- Pet the Dog: Allows Mylene and the rest of the the Holfort Royal Family aside from Julius to leave unharmed when the coup happens as part of a deal with Roland to kill the Saintess, even though Roland died before he could uphold his end.
- Rank Scales with Asskicking: He captures princess Hertrude from her flagship, in the fleet battle with the Principality, getting severely injured in the process.
- Straight for the Commander: His strategy for the Big Badass Battle Sequence was to capture Princess Hertrude from her flagship.
- Supporting Leader: Leads Holfort’s fleet that intercepts the Principality in an Epic Ship-on-Ship Action. Later lends Leon political support as well, much later than he did in the main story.
- The Usurper: Eventually plots with Leon’s other allies to make House Redgrave the new Royal Family, deposing the Holfort Dynasty. They have the blood ties to validate their claim.
Marquess Frampton
Malcom Fou Frampton in Marie Route
Has just as much ambition, and is just as much of a useful idiot as he was in the main story.- Big Bad Wannabe: Just like in the main story, those he colludes with want to destroy the Kingdom he aims to control.
- Frame-Up: Frampton tricks Clarice's followers into ambushing Julius without her knowledge, at the behest of The Saintess. Then, Frampton tries to have her and the followers silenced, but Leon saves them with the help of Master, hiding them on his island.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: All The Saintess needed to do to get him arrested was get his ambitious vassals to spill what they know of his crimes.
- Metaphorically True: What he told Clarice's followers, that Olivia was a witch bent on destroying the kingdom, wasn't exactly a lie.
- Nasal Trauma: Julius chops Frampton’s nose with his sword before beheading him.
- Off with His Head!: After he abandons The Saintess, she quickly has him exposed, and orders Julius to decapitate him.
- Out-Gambitted: The Saintess was completely prepared for his betrayal of her.
- Threat Backfire: Threatens to expose The Saintess for their mutual crimes, but she had already prepared to do the same to him.
- Uriah Gambit: It turns out that this was his plan in the Otome Game plot, to have Duke Redgrave and other political opponents of his die to the Principality, before giving them minor concessions, leaving himself in a stronger political position. Despite the effort by Leon and Marie turning what would have been a massive rout of the Kingdom's forces into a hard earned victory that ends the war, he still succeeds in weakening his opponents politically despite their survival, ending Angie's engagement to Julius.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Threatens to have The Saintess killed and replaced with a puppet to keep her in line, refusing to cooperate any longer, but he has no idea who he’s dealing with.
The Saintess (walking spoiler)
Saintess Anne
One of the long dead founders of the Kingdom of Holfort, and worshipped as a deity within it. She was a member of an adventuring party of non-inheriting nobles, who discovered and settled the continent, with the other members consisting of ancestors of Julius, Jilk, Chris, Brad, Greg, and Leon. The latter ancestor, Liia Bartfort, was the leader of the group and Anne's love, but was betrayed and exiled. Before disappearing, she left behind the three Holy Relics, and put curses on them, leaving fragments of her own soul and desire for vengeance against the other five adventurers' descendants inside.- Aerith and Bob: Lampshaded Trope. Leon and Marie are surprised to find her name was Anne.
- Bold Explorer: Discovered and explored the continent that makes up the bulk of Holfort Kingdom along with her adventurer party, driven by them each being non-inheriting family members from elsewhere.
- Crystal Dragon Jesus: Prayers are said to her in the Kingdom, and she’s seemingly their savior analogue (or was that actually her sister instead?) The Spirit Advisor fragment of her suggests as much.
- Cursed Item: She created the Holy Relics as this, infused with parts of her soul and her anger and desire for revenge.
- Demonic Possession: The ultimate ability of the curses she left in the Holy Relics, that can only be done to her descendants. The fragment within the bracelet finds great success possessing Olivia, while the necklace fragment gets a Curb-Stomp Battle from Marie.
- Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: Both the fragments of her spirit within the artifacts express an interest in Leon due to him resembling The Lost Lenore Liia, both physically and in personality.
- Founder of the Kingdom: Widely regarded as this, with the five adventurers. There are some doubts cast upon her role, however. She has been thought to have used the Amplifier Artifact Royal Airship to do so.
- Gameplay and Story Integration: Olivia gaining power from the Holy Relics as Sword of Plot Advancement, was due to her being possessed more of the spirits Anne left within them.
- Impoverished Patrician: Her and the other founders were non-inheriting poor nobles.
- Jeanne d'Archétype: Her role in the Kingdom of Holfort’s history has shades of this. She was an adventurer with White Magic, and also seen as their prophet.
- Light Is Not Good: A master of White Magic turned towards vengeance.
- The Long Game: Cursing the Holy Relics was definitely a long term plot for revenge.
- The Lost Lenore: Liia, the leader of her adventuring party, who was betrayed by the other five, and exiled, driving her to vengeance. He is the founder of House Bartfort, and had a similar personality and appearance to Leon.
- Love Makes You Evil: Taking revenge on the descendants of her targets, and trying to destroy their entire kingdom, because the man she loved was betrayed by them. One could also consider her using the Royal Airship Weiss to found the Kingdom, this.
- Our Ghosts Are Different: She left three fragments of her spirit, charged with vengeance and The Power of Hate, in the Holy Relics.
- The Power of Hate: Her Vengeful Ghosts are a physical manifestation of this. Which contrasts with Olivia’s power she used to resolve the Principality's invasion in the main story, being similar to The Power of Love.
- Revenge: Her playing The Long Game to get this on the descendants of the five who betrayed her lover Liia, is the main cause of her impact on the plot.
- Sins of Our Fathers: She seeks Revenge against the descendants of the people who usurped and betrayed her love.
- Superpowerful Genetics: Her family in general seems to have these, as descendants have rare and powerful magics to various degrees.
- Sword of Plot Advancement: The cursed Holy Relics she made were this in the original Otome Game, as they boost White Magic.
- Vengeful Ghost: Within her cursed Holy Relics. Even after one of them becomes Leon's Spirit Advisor, she still tries to talk him into carrying out her revenge.
- Walking Spoiler: For Marie Route especially.
- White Magic: The ultimate practitioner of it, which mostly includes Healing Hands, Barrier Warrior, and Compelling Voice abilities. Her descendants inherit this ability to varying degrees.
- You Remind Me of X: Each of her ghosts is reminded of her Lost Lenore Liia, by Leon. Since they’re separate entities, this proves to be both a good thing, and bad.
The Saintess' spirit within the Bracelet
- "That’s right, dance. Dance on the palm of my hand."
- Agent Provocateur: Her early goal in manipulating the princes, is to get them to drive apart the faction supporting Julius to weaken the Holfort dynasty's grip on the Kingdom. Later on, she moves to making the cream of future nobility die as Cannon Fodder Child Soldiers.
- Arch-Enemy: For Angelica, explaining Angelica's behavior in the game.
- Big Bad: Of the Marie Route side story.
- The Chess Master: Of Xanatos Speed Chess no less. It's not a question of who her pawns are, but who isn't one.
- The Corrupter: Of Julius. In the main story, Marie uses her power over his heart to influence him into being Modest Royalty, while in Marie Route, the Saintess influences Julius into a Chronic Backstabbing Disorder Yandere.
- Crazy-Prepared: Was waiting and ready to kill Frampton in case he ever betrayed her.
- Death Glare: Gives Kyle one for not saying Leon’s name respectfully enough.
- Evil Counterpart: To Marie in the main story, with their manipulation of the five princes. Marie was selfish and bratty, while the Saintess is pure evil.
- Evil Laugh: Tends to do this when in private.
- The Fake Cutie: Basically masquerading as Olivia, The Cutie, while manipulating everyone with evil schemes.
- Glamour Failure: After she assimilates the spirit within the Saintess' Scepter, she is no longer capable of fooling Kyle, due to his Aura Vision. She resorts to holding his mother Yumeria hostage.
- A Glass of Chianti: In many of her scenes, especially if she's scheming something.
- I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: Holds Kyle's mother Yumeria hostage after his Elf Aura Vision discovers that Olivia is possessed.
- Living a Double Life: Appears kind, innocent, and defenseless in front of the five princes. Appears as a ruthless political powermonger when sneaking out to meet with Marquess Frampton, making threats, and vicious schemes. Eventually, cracks in her mask start to form.
- In Love with Your Carnage: Holds her blushing face in both hands while Leon curb-stomps the five princes.
- Manipulative Bitch: Masterfully plays with the feelings of Olivia's admirers and her enemies.
- Misanthrope Supreme: Her desire for revenge on the five adventurers got twisted over many years of isolation into this.
- Motive Rant: Telling Princess Hertrude how she wants to destroy both the Principality and Kingdom before forcing her to drink poison, which backfires on her when Hertrude tells her sister and Leon about it, steeling their resolve to oppose her.
- Paper Destruction of Anger: Repeatedly does this, before ranting to Kyle, who has to clean it up.
- Playing Both Sides: She helps manipulate the Kingdom and Principality into war.
- Revealing Cover-Up: When she's scheduled to meet Leon, Olivia reasserts control of her body, grabbing him and then passing out in his arms while begging for help. - Villain with Good Publicity: Ensures she's respected when declared a saint, using Olivia's Compelling Voice on a crowd.
- Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Leon originally believed Olivia to be one based on what he saw in the game, but in this world based on the Otome game at least, the Saintess is the real reason behind her actions, via Demonic Possession. She is good at playing a pure hearted heroine while secretly planning everyone's downfall.
- The Woman Behind the Man: The five princes, Frampton, and the Principality, are all ultimately dancing in her palm.
- Xanatos Speed Chess: Manipulates many different factions towards her desired goal: As much carnage as possible. She can make other take the fall when she’s targeted, and make other's plans work for her.
- Yandere: The fragment of Anne's spirit within the Saintess' Necklace, suggests she'd kill all of her own descendants like Marie if she had to, in order to be with Leon, because of the cumulative rage of the two spirits within the Bracelet and Scepter possessing Olivia.
- And Your Little Dog, Too!: Promises to messily murder the man Olivia hopes will free herself from Anne's possession, not knowing that man is Leon. Subverted later when she does learn about Leon, switching over to her Yandere behavior mentioned above.

King Roland
Roland Rapha Holfort in Marie Route
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Although he serves as The Chew Toy and Butt-Monkey in the main story, the side story reveals that if he was really serious, he can even take on the possessed Olivia together with Leon's Master that the latter needs to trick him to even the playing field.
- Hidden Depths: The What If? reveals that Roland is one of the few people who can No-Sell Saintess Ann's brainwashing magic with pure willpower.
- King Incognito: His role in the Otome Game plot, as The Masked Knight (a scene of which, is in Marie Route SS).
- Master Swordsman: How good is he? He can cut magic itself with just a sword.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the What If? sidestory, Roland's flippant and lazy attitude is absent but is serious and focused on his battle with Saintess Ann. Roland is more ruthless that he is willing to kill Olivia even though he knew she was just possessed, citing it was a better option than lose countless lives. Also for the first time, he called Julius "foolish" (on the main story, he didn't even called out his son's actions even once) and lamented had he knew earlier, he would stop Julius no matter what.
