This page contains a list of characters that were created by SEGA and made their debut in Puyo Puyo Tetris and its sequel Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. These characters hail from an entirely different dimension, foreign to the Puyo cast, where Tetris is the game of choice instead of Puyo Puyo. Technology is also a dominant force in this world (even arguably more so than that of Ringo's reality), though having been drawn into the conflicts that happen in the Puyo worlds, they've come to learn the gameplay of Puyo Puyo to adapt.

All spoilers for Squares' folder are unmarked. You Have Been Warned.

Characters introduced in Puyo Puyo Tetris

     Tee (T)

Tee (T)

Character Color: Purple

Voice Actor: Kaoru Mizuhara (Japanese), Max Mittelman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_t.png

The captain of the Starship Tetra and the current ruling king of the Tetris Kingdom. He's very mindful of his manners, but that also makes him rather stoic. Tee first meets Ringo onboard when tetriminoes started raining down in Suzuran.

  • The Ace: As to be expected of the Tetris King, Tee is great at Tetris.
  • Always Second Best: To the previous Tetris King, until he eventually surpassed him.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: In the English version, Tee has the deepest voice of the Tetra crew, befitting his role as the captain and Tetris King.
  • Badass Armfold: He often has his arms crossed.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: Thought Ex was going to be the Final Boss in the main story? Well, it's actually Tee.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult/downplay his title as the Tetris King, and don't refer to him as 'basic'.
  • Book Ends:
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris starts with him as the main character in the Starship Tetra ending with him as the Final Boss, and — counting the DLC episodes — ends with him as the Final Boss once more.
    • The main story starts with a Tetris vs. Puyo match between him (as the playable character) and Ringo. It ends with the roles being reversed.
  • Brooklyn Rage: Tee’s alternate voice in Tetris 2 gives him a Brooklyn accent.
  • Brutal Honesty: Tee can either be extremely blunt or very tactful. On the occasions where he's more so the former...
    • His blunt dismissal of Jay and Elle after they ask if they were the 'cruel and nasty people' Ringo and Arle were referring to in Tetris.
    • In Tetris 2, Tee doesn't hesitate to claim that Ex can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. Ex does not take it well.
    • His deconstruction of Squares' motivations and the reasons he keeps losing can be quite blunt. He later also forces him to confront the fact that Marle went easy on him.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: In Chapter 8 of Puyo Puyo Tetris he has to do stand-up comedy with Maguro, and it goes... pretty poorly.
Maguro: Say, Tee, why’d the Tetrimino cross the road?★
  • The Captain: In addition to being the Tetris King, he is also the captain of the Starship Tetra.
  • Challenge Seeker: He first met Ex to challenge him to a Tetris match because he heard he was strong.
  • Deadly Disc: Wields a chakram in his attacks.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While Tee is usually polite, he's certainly capable of delivering some very stinging lines. He IS the Only Sane Man after all.
  • Determinator:
    • According to Ex, even though Tee lost the first time they met, he did not stop challenging Ex until he won.
    • His win and loss quotes also reflect this aspect of his personality.
  • Expy: Of Ringo, being an Only Sane Man encountering the utter zaniness of the rest of the cast.
  • The Face: Due to being The Captain and the Only Sane Man of the crew, Tee is usually the one who does most of the talking.
  • Far-Out Foreigner's Favorite Food: In Tetris, Tee gets a taste for sweets after being given some by Lemres. This is due in part to sweet things not existing in the Tetris universe. Goes a step further when Word of God confirms that not only sweet foods have captivated him, but squishy foods as well. Tee has gone on record saying there are very few squishy things in his world at all.
  • Final Boss: Of Puyo Puyo Tetris and of the 10th Chapter (DLC only).
  • Fish out of Water: In addition to not knowing what Puyo battles were (or what a Puyo even was, for that matter), his dimension doesn't seem to have any sugary sweets of any kind, which troubles Lemres.
  • Foil:
    • To Ex. They have both held the title of Captain and the Tetris King but it's clear that they are quite different. Tee is a The Stoic and presents himself as calm, collected and rational while Ex is also described as serious but he also is quite goofy and down to earth. Going deeper, Ex is cocky in his abilities and has the strength and power to back it up, while Tee's confidence is largely implied to be less than genuine in his appearances. Tee's card in Puyo Puyo Quest describes him as self-conscious about his actions (While also placing Ex on a pedestal in his lines) while Ex is genuinely silly and hotheaded.
    • He's also this to Ess. They are both characters in leadership positions compared to the rest of the crew, but Ess is rude and tactless while Tee is reasonable and respectful. Their opposite personalities serve to highlight how different the members of the tetra can be, and also serve to fill in gaps of leadership styles. Ess is also the Emotion to Tee's stoicism. Ess has Hidden Depths that make her quite in tune with other's emotions while Tee can come off as a bit too distant or unemotional, not completely understanding how to deal with heavier emotions such as shame or embarrassment. There's also Tee's willingness to help anyone to contrast against Ess, who is able to recognize when something is out of their hands and wanting to think of a different solution.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Amitie and especially Ringo comment multiple times on how form-fitting Tee's jumpsuit is, and how lovely it is.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Tee is supposed to be the best at Tetris in-universe, having surpassed Ex (the former Tetris King). His AI, however, is significantly weaker than Ex's (though still stronger than the rest of the S.S. Tetra crew).
  • The Generic Guy:
    • Rather strangely for a ''Puyo Puyo'' character, Tee doesn’t really have any quirks to speak of. It could be argued that Tee’s normalness is his quirk and actually makes him stand out more.
    • In-Universe, Tee gets called bland a few times in Tetris 2, often by Ess.
  • Guile Hero: It probably goes without saying that Tee is highly intelligent. In fact, he's so smart that he figures out how to get under Squares' skin and throw him off his game. He caught on to what Ringo had discovered about Squares' appearance and motives, identified why Squares had so much trouble controlling his power and was able to vocalize that Squares was not actually as old as he seemed.
    • He also identifies that Marle was going easy on Squares to allow him to win and forced Squares to confront that fact.
    • He also predicts that Ex had created a place for the group to train, all because he knew Ex well enough to predict that he would have something prepared.
    • He also knows how to calm Ess down when she believes he had taken sides against her, implying he didn't believe that Zed was her papa. Tee is able to set the record straight and make her realize she overreacted without provoking any more outbursts.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A non-lethal variant. In Chapter 7 of Tetris, Tee attempts to take the job of being the keeper of dimensions from Ex. Even after it's pointed out that this would lead to Tee being completely alone and forgotten about, he is still willing to go through with it.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is holding back for the sake of setting a good example to his crew these days, but Chapter 10 in Puyo Puyo Tetris reveals that he was quite the Shounen-Hero when he was younger, very dedicated to his quest To Be a Master.
  • Humble Pie: Chapter 10 of Puyo Puyo Tetris shows that Tee used to have quite the case of Small Name, Big Ego. Losing to Ex, the Tetris King at that time, helped him change into the mature and calm person we see earlier in the game.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Heavily implied in the Japanese version. Tee presents himself as a calm, collected, and confident person all throughout Puyo Puyo Tetris, to the point he shows surprise when people actually think he's a calm and cool guy. One of the reasons he was so intent on taking Ex's place was because he believed that it would be better for him to remain trapped instead of Ex. He expresses genuine confusion when Ringo fights him to snap him out of this mindset. This is subverted in the English version, as the motivation is not expanded upon. Played more straight in the English version of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 as Tee gets very offended when insulted, a contrast to his usually stoic and prideful demeanor.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In Chapter 4 of Puyo Puyo Tetris he mentions that he's a friend of Arle to the Dark Prince, who is currently upset about her telling him off earlier. Unsurprisingly, the Dark Prince challenges Tee to a battle.
  • The Leader: As the captain of the Starship Tetra.
  • Literal-Minded: In Chapter 6 of Tetris 2, after Ringo says that Arle is killing it at cheering up Marle, Tee asks what she is killing.
  • Main Character Final Boss: He is the protagonist on the Tetris side of Puyo Puyo Tetris and its sequel, but his want of taking Ex's place ends up with Tee as the Final Boss of the first game.
  • Modest Royalty: There's nothing that hints Tee is the Tetris King, and not merely the captain of the Starship Tetra until he spells it out to Ringo. This is largely implied to be the case because Tee doesn't feel he's earned the title in the Japanese version. In Tetris 2 he comes right out and says that he's the Tetris King in his introduction.
  • Nice Guy: He never lashes out at anybody and he always approaches people who are mischievous or in turmoil with the intent of figuring out what's causing their unusual behavior. He also demonstrates this by usually saying nothing in response to Ess insulting him but instead responding with kindness.
  • Not So Stoic: He gets mad at Ess when she complains about letting Amitie and Arle loose in the Starship Tetra. It's a stark contrast to how he acts almost every other time in the game.
    • He gets spooked by Risukuma early on in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. The Unsound Effect dubs it an "uncharacteristically high-pitched shriek".
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to his crewmates, as well as everyone else (including Ringo), he's just about the only person who truly seems to have their head on straight.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Due to his stoic nature, Tee rarely has a smile on his face.
  • Power of Creation: His Terraformer skill, where he creates a preset for a T-Spin Double.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He has purple eyes and as the captain and current ruler, he's the strongest of the crew.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Captain of the Starship Tetra, strongest member of its crew, Tetris King, and the Final Boss. Could also be a case of Asskicking Leads to Leadership, as he had become Ex's superior at Tetris by the time Ex became the Keeper of Dimensions and Tee became the Tetris King.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Ess' Red Oni.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Let's see here... short, whitish hair, purple eyes, stoic on the outside, Unresolved Sexual Tension with the main protagonist... Yep, this checks out.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He's the Tetris King, and at the same time he watches over things as Captain of the Starship Tetra.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: When he gets spooked by Risukuma in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, it even gets called high-pitched by the Unsound Effect.
  • Secret-Keeper: He's perfectly aware that Ex is Ess' biological father, however he still goes along with Ess' belief that Zed is her father. He attempts to use the fact of Ex being her father as a reason why he should become Keeper of Dimensions instead of him. He thinks better of it after Ringo battles him to snap him out of such a mindset.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man:
    • The Manly Man to Ai's Sensitive Guy.
    • The Sensitive Guy to Zed's Manly Man.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: According to Ex, Tee used to be very cocky.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His spin attack and spinning chakram, as a reference to T-Spins.
  • Standardized Leader: Downplayed in the fact that Tee’s normality and saneness actually help him stand out against the insanity of his fellow crewmates on the S.S. Tetra.
  • The Stoic: Even when the Tetra is about to make a crash landing, he goes on with Casual Danger Dialogue.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Averted, as he has the same AI and Dropset as Ringo. This is notable as he's the only one of the Tetris characters that borrows an AI and Dropset from a character that is playable in the Puyo Puyo Tetris series (until Lidelle, Ocean Prince, Ms. Accord, and Yu & Rei were introduced in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 as DLC-exclusive characters, matching Ess, Zed, Ex, and Jay & Elle's respective AI and dropsets). His Fusion Dropset is different, however.
  • Theme Naming: As befitting of the Tetris King and captain of the Starship Tetra, his spell names (Hold, Spin Attack, Lockdown, T-Strike/Turn Over, and (T-Spin) Burst) are almost all derived from Tetris terms (Hold, Spin, T-Spin, Lockdown).
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Tee displays a few more moments of airheadedness in Tetris 2 and does take a bit longer to adapt to Ringo's world compared to the first game.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: It's minor, but Tee is a bit cockier in Tetris 2.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Chapter 10 of Tetris shows that before Tee became captain and Tetris King, he was rather Hot-Blooded and cocky.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: In Tetris, Tee displays a liking to sweet and soft foods. Supplementary material reveals that soft and squishy textured foods can be considered a weakness of sorts for him.
  • Tranquil Fury: Right after Ess yells at him in Tetris, Tee yells back. However, when Ess calls him "useless", his voice goes quiet and he adopts a more monotone expression. Still, it's clear that he's pissed. This is the angriest we've ever seen him.
  • True Companions: Similarly to Arle and Carbuncle, Tee is this with O.
    • Puyo Puyo Quest released cards that featured Tee and O together, and on the *5 and *6 cards Tee talks about how O makes him comfortable when he is in an unfamiliar area and how he trusts O very much.
    • In chapter 1 of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Tee states that he and O are inseparable, only to realize that O has wandered off somewhere and that he has no clue where he is.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: It's more or less implied he develops feelings for Ringo as the story progresses, and the feeling seems to be mutual.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • He's on the receiving end of this in chapter 7 of Tetris. Considering he was trying to take Ex's role as Keeper of Dimensions, which would have left him all alone in-between dimensions, it's quite justified.
    • Ess gives him this treatment in BOTH games when he leaves her alone. Notably, it was not of his own volition on both occasions.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Tee has this with two characters.
    • Tee is often seen with his yellow companion O. O is a lot more energetic and is a Perpetual Smiler which contrasts with Tee's more serious and Perpetual Frowner tendencies.
    • In addition he also has this with Ex, who was the captain and Tetris King at one point. Ex is much more relaxed and goofy compared to Tee who is often stoic and serious.

     O

O

Character Color: Yellow

Voice Actor: Mina Tominaga (Japanese), Cindy Robinson (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_o.png

Tee's partner, and the ship's communications officer and mascot. He only ever utters "pi" when speaking, but his cuteness keeps the crew in high spirits. He shares a parallel with Carbuncle, being yellow, animal-like sidekicks that don't speak with words.

  • Ambiguous Robot: According to the series' current head scenario writer Utako Yoshino, it is unclear whether or not O is a robot.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's honestly easier to list what we DO know about O than it is to list about what we don't. This is lampshaded by Tee in chapter 6 of Tetris, where he says that he doesn't remember how he met O, just that he's known him for a while.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Works as a transmitter of Tee's reports towards Ex.
  • Artificial Stupidity: He has the weakest AI of the Tetris characters, not even rotating his Puyo. He's at least smart enough to rotate his Tetrominoes, but is still weaker than everybody else at that.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Resembles a sun casting over a cloud.
  • Cephalothorax: O is composed of a head with two arms coming out of it.
  • Expy: The Tetris dimension's equivalent of Carbuncle. Naturally, they get along well.
  • Hidden Depths: According to Suketoudara in Chapter 8 of Tetris, O is actually a very good dancer depsite his lack of legs.
  • The Lancer: Serves as the happy-go-lucky sidekick to the more serious Tee.
  • Odd Name Out: O is technically the only member of the S.S. Tetra to not receive a Dub Name Change, making him the only crew member who's name is still one letter.
  • One-Word Vocabulary: Can only say "Pi".
  • Perpetual Smiler: Excluding when he gets angry, O always has a grin on his face.
  • Personal Raincloud: His lose animation depicts him face down on the ground while a light drizzle hangs above him.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knew all along that the Keeper of Dimensions — Ex — was the sort-of Big Bad behind the plot of Puyo Puyo Tetris.
  • Shock and Awe: Conjures up lightning bolts in his animations, akin to storm clouds.
  • Stealth Pun: O’s body is a circle and all he can say is "pi".
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Despite being an Expy of Carbuncle, he uses the same AI and dropset as Onion Pixie when playing Puyo.
  • Team Pet: Being Carbuncle's Tetris counterpart, he's the non-human animal of the group.
  • True Companions: O is this with Tee. While O can only say "Pi", he seems to be fond of Tee and is rather upset when Tee becomes the Keeper of Dimensions in chapter 7 of Tetris since they will never see each other again.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Many characters (including Tee himself) often question the purpose of Tee's reports. The original reason given is that the reports go to Ex, the keeper of dimensions. However, Ex is strongly implied to be omnipotent, meaning the validity of this explanation can be called into question. It gets even more confusing when Tee makes reports when Ex is nearby in chapter 7 of Tetris 2. It is also questioned in the beginning of Tetris 2, considering how the S.S. Tetra's crew is now aware of Ex's existence.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: With Tee. O is a perpetual smiler who is rather energetic, whereas Tee is a perpetual frowner who remains composed.

     Ess (S)

Ess (S)

Character Color: Green

Voice Actor: Yui Horie (Japanese), Eden Riegel (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_s.png

The navigator of the Spaceship Tetra. Although she may look cute, this green-haired crew member is quite rude, bratty, and a crybaby. Even so, she's quite fond of her Papa.

  • A Day in the Limelight: During Chapter 2 of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Ess gets her own side-chapter, titled "Courageous Navigator", focusing on how Ess is trying to get the rest of the Tetra's crew to help her find Tee and O after Ex suddenly appears and teleports them both to Ringo's world without any warning.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Is unable to remember Ex’s name in chapter 10 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, and guesses words that are varying degrees of close to it like sax and socks.
  • Angrish: After Ex takes Tee and O near the beginning of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Ess gets very enraged. The Unsound Effect dubs what she says as unintelligible-rage.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other:
    • Despite how much she insults and argues with Tee, she joins Ringo, Amite, and Arle in trying to talk him out of becoming the new Keeper of Dimensions in Chapter 7 of Puyo Puyo Tetris.
    • Ess' heartfelt goodbye to Amitie at the end of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
    • Ess claiming that Tee and O "belong to her" after Ex essentially kidnaps them with little to no explanation. From then on, she becomes extremely determined to find them again.
    • Ess battles Jay and Elle in an attempt to help them focus their psychic abilities enough to get a read on O's internal radar after she learns that they're very worried about Tee and O. So worried, in fact, that they initially couldn't use their powers to track them down as easily as they could have. It should be noted, before Zed had informed her that the twins were worried for Tee and O's well-being, she did not give a battle a second thought.
  • Berserk Button: Don't disturb her afternoon nap. Amitie learned this the hard way.
    • In addition, it's quite easy to send her into a blind rage if you question her relationship with her robot father, Zed.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: While her age is not confirmed, she fits the other two parts of this trope perfectly. She is incredibly rude and is the daughter of Ex, the Keeper of Dimensions.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Delivers this multiple times in both Tetris games.
  • Daddy's Girl: Has this dynamic with Zed, who she sees as her Papa.
  • Deep South: Her alternate voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 gives her a Southern accent.
  • Demoted to Extra: Slightly suffers from this in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. While she still is the most prominent S.S. Tetra crew member after Tee and O, her role in the story has been significantly reduced compared to the first game.
  • Disappeared Dad: Ex, Ess’ real father, left her when she was young. He built Zed to be a Parental Substitute for her.
  • Drama Queen: She's a big one with her "whiny sobs" and "sobby whines" as well as her tendency to call everyone who deals heavy damage on her a "big meanie". note
  • Entitled to Have You: A non-romantic example. Due to Parental Abandonment (and the trauma she suffered from said abandonment), she has become terrified of the idea of being alone or having someone leave her. This is shown by how she claims that the crew belongs to her when freaking out over Ex practically kidnapping Tee and O.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Despite how much of a Jerkass Ess can be and how lowly she tends to think of nearly everyone else, she absolutely adores her Papa.
  • Far-Out Foreigner's Favorite Food: Like Tee, Ess develops a fondness for sweets, specifically marshmallows, after being given some by Lemres in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Foil: To Tee. See his entry for more details.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Her counter animation, along with Dramatic Thunder.
  • Good Is Not Nice: For all of her cute and innocent looks, she can give the likes of Klug, Raffina, and even Jay & Elle a run for their money when it comes to being a Jerkass.
  • Green and Mean: Downplayed. Ess is not a villain, but is indeed quite the jerk, and is based on the green S-Tetrimino.
  • Hates Being Alone: As shown when she yells at Tee for when he runs off without her. According to Yoshino Utako, the game's scenario writer, this is due to Ess still being traumatized by losing Ex, her real father; it gave her a terminal fear of being left alone. This usually characterizes itself as extreme possessiveness of those she does love, claiming that they "belong to her".
  • Hidden Depths: She is surprisingly in tune with other's emotions despite being so rude. She is also able to keep calm and stay rational to think of another solution, even when faced with Tee being rash and emotional.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Proclaims that she hates arrogant, spoiled, stuck-up, self-entitled people, such as Raffina. Tee and O immediately call her out on this.
    • In Chapter 5 of Tetris 2, she criticizes Rulue for showing her love to only one person, and then immediately asks Zed to back her up.
  • I Am Not Your Father: Inverted in Chapter 10 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, where she cheerfully calls Zed her "Papa". In front of Ex, her actual father, who does not take it very well.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: One of her portraits during the story mode gives her a rather melodramatic crying face.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Subverted. She may look cute and innocent, but she is actually far from it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ranging from trying to beat Amitie over the head to her various antagonizing remarks, she makes Klug and Raffina look like total angels by comparison. That said, she still has a good heart deep down and is nonetheless a loyal member of the Tetra's crew.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While it does not excuse everything that she says, Ess has every right to be angry at Ex, the Keeper of Dimensions in Chapter 7 of Tetris since him failing to do his job is what caused the events of the game to happen in the first place.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ess and her father Ex are the only characters in Tetris 2 that have access to a Terraformer Skill that creates a Tetris gap.
  • Missing Mom: No mention has ever been made about what happened to her mother.
  • The Navigator: Her role on the Tetra.
  • Number Two: The first mate of the Starship Tetra's crew.
  • Ocular Gushers: Her crying sprite, which shows up quite often in the main story.
  • Parasol of Pain: She uses her parasol for a few of her attacks.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: She also carries it around as an accessory in cutscenes.
  • Parental Abandonment:
    • By the end of Chapter 6 of Puyo Puyo Tetris she shows a bit of distress over who her real Papa is.
    • In December 2020, before the release of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, scenario writer Utako Yoshino confirmed on via her Twitter that unlike the rest of the Tetra's crew, Ess is unable to remember the true identity of her father who was also the Tetra's previous captain because his disappearance traumatized her to the point that she is actively repressing her memories of him at the current time.
  • Power of Creation: Her Terraformer skill, creating a Tetris preset.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Tee's Blue oni.
  • Sarcastic Devotee: Ess constantly insults Tee about his skills as a captain. Despite this, after Ex teleports him and O away at the beginning of Tetris 2, she immediately begins searching for where he was teleported to.
  • Ship Tease: With Maguro in the English dub. Jay and Elle tease her about this.
Jay and Elle: Ess and Maguro, sitting in a tree!
    Elle and Jay: P-U-Y-O-I-N-G!
  • Sore Loser: Unsurprising due to her personality. When she loses, she demands that she and her opponent(s) play the game again. Her losing sprites in both games also feature her on the verge of tears.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: She uses the same AI and dropset as Lidelle when playing Puyo.
  • The Lancer: Serves as a leader when Tee is away since O is almost always with Tee. She is second in command and tends to try to fill in gaps in Tee's style. While Tee is a Nice Guy, Ess makes sure that the kindness doesn't end up detrimental. She's the outgoing and emotional one to contrast Tee's reserved and stoic nature.
  • Theme Naming: Her attacks are all different forms of pampering and prettying up with make-up and cosmetics. She's got Eyelashes, Lipstick/Lip Cream, Face Mask/Gel Nail, Crystal Gel/Foundation, and Deluxe Spa Package/Aesthetic Magic.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Amazingly, Ess actually manages to be a fair bit ruder in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 when compared to the first game.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: On the flip side, Ess' goodbye to Amitie is a lot more heartfelt and kinder in Tetris 2.
  • Trauma Button:
    • Due to trauma from being abandoned by her real father (Ex) at a young age, Ess has developed a fear of being alone. When she gets separated from the group in Chapter 2 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, she is shown sobbing uncontrollably.
    • Happens again Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 when Ex warps Tee and O away for an important mission.
  • Tsundere: She is noticeably less of an ass around Maguro, and Jay and Elle tease her about this in the Japanese script.
    Elle: Hard on the outside!
    Jay: Soft on the inside!
  • Two Girls to a Team: Is one of two female crewmates on the Starship Tetra, the other being Elle.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:

     Ai (I)

Ai (I)

Character Color: Blue

Voice Actor: Yuuki Tai (Japanese), Joe J. Thomas (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_i.png

The ship crew's engineer, Ai is a dog with extremely high intelligence. Despite this, he's quite skittish and is easily undermined into a whimpering mess. He's also often teased and picked on by Jay and Elle's pranks.

  • Apologetic Attacker: A couple of his lines in Big Bang are this.
  • Birds of a Feather: With fellow science human-animal Risukuma.
  • Butt-Monkey: It's stated that he's constantly tortured by Jay & Elle's pranks.
  • Expy: Of Risukuma, as both are intelligent people with animal heads. Also a more downplayed one to Feli, as they both rely a lot on dowsing and tracking things (though Ai is much more pleasant to be around).
  • Funny Animal: A humanoid dog, specifically a chihuahua.
  • Furry Reminder: Whenever Ai is scared, he’ll start whimpering and barking.
  • Heroic BSoD: He easily gets turned into a whimpering mess if he's startled. Jay & Elle naturally exploit this for their amusement.
  • Hypno Pendulum: Subverted, since he's never shown inducing sleep. Its actual use, as shown in Tetris 2, is as a tracking device that, combined with Jay & Elle's abilities, allows the crew to track down Tee and O after they were both whisked away by Ex to deal with a new crisis.
  • Irony: After he actually manages to defeat Jay and Elle as a test of love during Ex's training, he reduces himself to a whimpering mess for some unexplained reason, much to Tee's dismay.
  • Machine Monotone: His alternative voice set in the Japanese version.
  • Nervous Wreck: Can easily become this whenever something startles him or when things may head down to chaos. The only way to rectify this is beating him in a Tetris/Puyo Puyo battle or if he senses warmth and sympathy from the likes of Risukuma of all people.
  • Ocular Gushers: When Ai gets really scared he begins to cry a waterfall.
  • Self-Made Man: When Ex meets him in a dream, he comments that Ai used to be a little runt until he grew up into the person he is today.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Tee's Manly Man.
  • The Smart Guy: As expected from the engineer. He's the one that repaired the broken-down ship.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Sports a pair of glasses and is the ship’s engineer.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He uses the same AI and dropset as Donguri Gaeru when playing Puyo, so facing him is a Luck-Based Mission.
  • Theme Naming: Reminiscent of Risukuma's Love theme, his spell names are all different ways of calling something beautiful. In Japanese, he uses different languages, including Hawaiian.
  • Verbal Tic: His alternate voice set in the English version has him much more in touch with his canine side.
  • Violence is the Only Option: It seems the only way to way to calm Ai down when he gets nervous is by having a battle with him. Tetris 2 downplays this somewhat by showing that the apparent warmth and sympathy from Risukuma can also calm him down.

     Jay & Elle (J & L)

Jay & Elle (J & L)

Character Color: Purple

Voice Actor: Kathreen Miyuki (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_jl.png

A mischief-making pair of twins, acting and speaking in sync with each other. They wield a mysterious power that activates whenever they join hands. These two are never seen separate and are often pulling pranks on Ai just for kicks.

  • Aerith and Bob: Jay and Elle are both common names in real life, unlike the rest of the crew mates’ names.
  • Brother–Sister Team: The two are always together and are the only characters aside from Arle and Carbuncle that stay together during battles. Justified, as their abilities only activate when they're in contact with each other, and said power (near-omniscience) is incredibly useful for a starship crew.
  • Creepy Twins: Their alternate voice gives them a dull monotone, invoking this.
  • Character Tics: They often hold their hand up to form a J and L respectively with their fingers.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: One of their Skill Battle Skills in Tetris 2 decreases the opponent's Defense.
  • Expy: Of Yu and Rei. They use the same dropset and are both Trickster Twins that enjoy pulling pranks on others. Their regular voice evokes Yu more, whereas their Creepy Monotone alternate voices hearken back to Rei.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Only one of their sleeves has a lighter patch at the top.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Sometimes, as twins, they tend to start a sentence with the other one finishing it for them.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Inverted. One animation depicts Elle punching and another depicts Jay shooting a fireball.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: A tweet by Utako Yoshino says that Jay and Elle pull pranks due to both of them being very lonely.
  • It Amused Me: They often pull pranks for no particular reason other than to have fun, Ai being their normal target.
  • Jerks with Hearts of Gold: Both of them cause chaos, especially around Ai, because they think it's funny. But despite all the trouble they cause for the crew, they are genuinely concerned when Tee and O are warped away by Ex.
  • Kids Are Cruel: They seem to be the youngest members of the Tetra crew, and they can be pretty mischievous (especially towards Ai).
  • The Load: In Tetris, it seemed that their role in the Tetra was just to "liven things up" with their pranks. It took until Tetris 2 to know what they actually do.
  • Never My Fault: Their defeat line has them blame each other for losing.
    "It's all your fault, Elle/Jay!"
  • Orange/Blue Contrast: They are twins and are based off the Orange L and Blue J Tetrimino, however Elle's outfit is more of a red than orange. Official artwork of the two usually adds to this contrast by having Elle sport a cheeky grin compared to Jay's rather serious expression.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Elle wears red/pink, Jay wears blue.
  • Power of Creation: Their Terraformer skill, they can create a preset for a T-Spin Single.
  • Shipper on Deck: Both of them. They tease Ess about having feelings for Maguro.
  • Sibling Team: They're twins, no less!
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: They use the same AI and dropset as Yu & Rei when playing Puyo.
  • Tagalong Kid: They are the youngest members of the Starship Tetra and do not seem to have an official position in the crew whereas everybody else does. Subverted in Tetris 2, however, as it's revealed that Jay & Elle have a mysterious power that activates whenever they join hands, allowing them to use their power to locate anything they want from anywhere.
  • Theme Naming: Their spells have names referencing mischief and/or pairing.
  • Third-Person People: In Japanese, neither of them use any personal pronouns in their speech, always referring to themselves in the third person.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Tetris, Jay & Elle are seemingly nothing more than a pair of Tagalong Kids with no clearly defined role in the Starship Tetra and generally act as more of a hindrance than anything else. Tetris 2, however, establishes that Jay & Elle have supernatural senses when in contact with each other, making them akin to a living, omniscient radar, thus completely justifying their presence in the crew. If Tee is to be believed, the two have saved the Starship Tetra countless times in the past.
  • Trickster Twins: These two are always scheming some pranks for their own entertainment. Ai so happens to be an easy target.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Elle is one of two female crew members on the Starship Tetra, the other being Ess.
  • Wonder Twin Powers: Tetris 2 reveals that Jay & Elle have the ability to locate anything they want by being in contact with each other, even if that "something" is on a different world (Tee), or if they don't know the specific details (such as when trying to find the source of Marle's corrupting powers, they discover someone is controlling her).

     Zed (Z)

Zed (Z)

Character Color: Red

Voice Actor: Ryunosuke Watanuki (Japanese), Joe J. Thomas (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_z.png

The intimidating, but dutiful robot housekeeper of the ship. He mistakes Arle and Carbuncle as troublemakers but was convinced otherwise. For some reason, Ess calls him "Papa".

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He becomes rather intimidating if you deny following his orders.
  • The Big Guy: The largest member of the Tetra crew.
  • Chef of Iron: Several of his attack animations depicting him attacking with food.
  • Gentle Giant: Once you get past his intimidating Neat Freak nature, he's one of the nicest members of the Starship Tetra's crew.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He should know better than to refer to himself as Ess's "Papa" in front of her real father.
  • Morality Pet: Zed acts as a downplayed one towards Ess. He is the only one who can get her to stop acting like a Jerkass.
  • Neat Freak:
    • He's very passionate about his job, to the point of being scary to others.
    • This trait of his gets reflected in gameplay in Tetris 2, having access to the Assemble skill, which neatly shifts several mino lines to the right, leaving only the first column empty, and the Piece Void skill to remove the last dropped piece, normally used in case it was placed incorrectly.
  • Parental Substitute: To Ess. Ex made him that way when he left the throne to guard the Space-time Gate.
  • Robot Maid: The designated housekeeper.
  • Running Gag: Everyone who sees him calls him overweight.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knows that Ex is Ess' father, but Ess herself grew up with the idea that Zed was her "Papa," which didn't sit well with Ex when he found out.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Tee's Sensitive Guy.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His name is spelled as "Zet" in Japan, mainly out of slight differences in the regional pronunciation of the letter Z.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Zed's stronger "attacks" consist of him serving platters of vegetables and bowls of vegetable soup to his opponent, which alone is enough for them to reel back in pain.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He uses the same AI and dropset as Ocean Prince when playing Puyo.
  • Team Mom: In addition to being the housekeeper, Zed often tries his best to keep the crew of the S.S Tetra in order. It makes sense given that he was built to be a substitute parent to Ess.
  • Theme Naming: His spells are all different things conducive to healthy living (Vitamins/Vitamic Rich, Minerals/Mineral Supplement, Protein/Protein Containing, Fiber/Fiber Intake, and Healthy Living/Super Healthy is Zed).
  • Token Robot: The only, confirmed anyway, robot of the crew.
  • Vocal Dissonance:
    • He has a rather sappy dramatic voice as an alternative voice set. In the English dub, he instead has a Machine Monotone.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, his English alternate voice sounds rather seductive for a robot.

     Ex (X)

Ex (X)

Character Color: Yellow

Voice Actor: Kazuki Yao (Japanese), Matthew Mercer (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_x.png

The former king of the Tetris Kingdom, and the Keeper of Dimensions. He's incredibly laid-back but has grown quite lonely at the Gate of Dimensions.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 10 of Puyo Puyo Tetris focuses entirely on him.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Notably, he's one of the very few characters that have this as a natural color and not something like Possessed Klug's case.
  • Ambiguous Situation: We don't know how Ex became the keeper of dimensions, just that he became the keeper after he gained the ability to travel between dimensions.
  • Artificial Brilliance: His AI is on par with the other "boss" characters, Dark Prince and Ecolo.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: He's not the final opponent in the main story. That's Tee.
  • Berserk Button: Don't let him know his creation (Zed) utterly replaced him as a paternal figure to his own daughter.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Yes, he does act a bit silly — as shown with him flailing his arms wildly while pulling off combos — and laid-back, but being the Keeper of Dimensions is no trifling matter. Even Ecolo says Ex's power surpasses his!
  • Big Bad: Of Puyo Puyo Tetris, though it should be noted that while he's Not Evil, Just Misunderstood, it was still his fault to begin with that he neglected his duties as Keeper of Dimensions during his bout of loneliness, leading to the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds merging in the first place.
  • Big Good: Plays this role in Tetris 2, as he's the one who gathered Ringo and Tee together to deal with the Dimensional Parasite as well as giving the party the means to restore Marle's memories and power.
  • Brain Bleach: Poor Ex was horrified upon hearing Dark Prince dreaming aloud of a honeymoon with Arle on the Spaceship Tetra. It takes Dark Prince realizing Ex was eavesdropping to snap him out of it.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets a fair share of criticism and mockery in Tetris 2, especially from Ringo and Tee.
  • Crazy-Prepared: According to Tee, Ex is a master of being prepared for situations. This allows Tee to identify that Ex had something prepared for the group in Tetris 2
  • Disappeared Dad: He's Ess's father, but when he had to take the mantle of the Keeper of Dimensions, he built Zed as a Parental Substitute. That idea had Gone Horribly Right — when Ex meets Ess in Chapter 10, she doesn't even recognize him.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: His reaction to Ringo agreeing with Tee who insulted him. Bonus points for the offended gasp that came before.
  • Foil To Tee. See Tee's entry for more.
  • Gone Horribly Right: He is the one who designed Zed to look after Ess. Unfortunately, this worked a little too well and ended up making Ess believe she was related to Zed and had no real blood father. Ex is not pleased one bit.
  • Hidden Eyes: In the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, his lose animation has his eyes becoming invisible as part of his disappointed expression.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: He didn't appear until late in the first Puyo Puyo Tetris. He appears in the first five minutes of Tetris 2 with his role as Keeper of Dimensions immediately revealed.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ex and his daughter Ess are the only characters in Tetris 2 that have access to a Terraformer Skill that creates a Tetris gap.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He reveals he is Ess' father in Act 10, but she doesn't buy it.
  • Meaningful Name: The letter X is generally used in Japanese media to indicate a crossovernote . Given that he's the one responsible for the worlds of Puyo Puyo and Tetris combining, it's a very apropos name. That being said, if you were to put a single block over a flat T-Tetrimino, you'd get an X-Pentomino (which cannot be seen in-game, even with the "Pentominoes" item effect since the T-Tetrimino just becomes a longer version of itself), further strengthening his relation to Tee. The Letter X is also the 24th letter of the alphabet, referencing his status as the 24th character in Puyo Tetris.
  • Mentor Archetype: Seems to have this in regards to Tee.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He sees a bit of himself in Squares, namely that both have made mistakes of their own in the past. Some of which have threatened the safety of all realities, no less. He even goes out of his way to help him in the EX Chapter.
  • Odd Friendship: He's notably on good terms with Ecolo, who normally does not have anything nice to say to anyone that isn't Ringo. The friendship becomes less odd given that both are space-time dwellers that can't be remembered by anyone else.
  • Odd Name Out: Out of all of the Puyo Tetris debut characters, he's the only one not named after a Tetrimino.
  • Oh, Crap!: Gets this when Tee declares his intention to replace him as Keeper of Dimensions to spare him his loneliness.
    Ex: ...Are you serious?!
  • Older Than They Look: He looks like a young adult, but he's old enough to be Ess' father.
  • Only Sane Man: In comparison to fellow cosmic-tier characters, he's arguably the most level-headed of the bunch. Compare that to Dark Prince and Squares' immaturity and Ecolo's... everything.
  • Power of Creation: His Terraformer skill generates a Tetris preset.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: As the former Tetris King and the current Keeper of Dimensions, he cannot be taken lightly as an opponent.
  • Reality Warper: Two of his three Skill Battle Skills in Tetris 2 involve changing the active Tetrimino (shared with Rafisol) and the active Puyo (shared with Ecolo).
  • Remember the New Guy?: Hand Waved. Tee didn't think to talk about him because people belonging to no particular world can't be remembered. In fact, Tee having trouble remembering the former Tetris King is frequently a plot point.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Implied in the beginning of Chapter 10 that, just like Tee, he was the Captain of Starship Tetra at the same time he was the Tetris King. Ex is taking Tee's place in the prologue, including logging a report through O, and does not find anything odd with it until Ringo points out the familiarity of the events.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Pretty sure a frilled dress shirt and suspenders don't pair well with a space suit's pants, boots, and gloves. Ringo certainly doesn't hesitate to comment on it in Tetris 2. Ess at one point refers to him as "Keeper of Dumb Suspenders".
  • Secret Art: Downplayed, compared to pre-Wave 2. While he shares Puyo Pair Change with Ecolo and Serilly, his version is the only one to accommodate all pairs as opposed to same-color pairs only (in other words, he can do red/blue, yellow/purple, etc. pairs while they can only do red/red, green/green, etc.).
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Should be a hint not to take him lightly.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He uses the same AI and dropset as Ms. Accord when playing Puyo.
  • Theme Naming: As with T, most of his spells reference Tetris terms (including Speed Up and Hard Drop), with his last spell (Revolution/Rotation X) being something of an alternate form of Tee's T-Spin theme.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Due to soul-crushing loneliness from being a hermit, he neglected his duties and caused the Puyo and Tetris worlds to merge. He inadvertently incited the entire plot of Puyo Puyo Tetris. And if Tetris 2 is any indication, that action alone had had far-reaching consequences in the form of Squares...
  • Void Between the Worlds: He resides at the edge of space-time, which is right at the border. Because he's so close to nonexistence itself, attempts to remember him are a blur, as Tee finds out upon seeing him in person.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Subverted. While he does come off as rather suspicious in Chapter 7 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, he is ultimately on the level and does show remorse over accidentally merging the Puyo and Tetris worlds.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: With Tee. Both were at one point the Tetris King and S.S. Tetra Captain, but Tee is much more serious and stoic whereas Ex is laid back and goofy.

Characters introduced in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

     Marle

Marle

Character Color: Blue

Voice Actor: Mirika Kawa (Japanese), Megan Taylor Harvey (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_maru.png
White Marle

A mysterious girl known as the Dimensional Parasite. She's bent on having fun with everyone and will do so at any cost, even if it meant forcing them to keep on battling.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: Though she's one of the more powerful beings in the series, she opts to instead stay back and watch over the worlds, avoiding the idea of meddling in their affairs.
  • Amnesiac God: She initially ends up losing her memories to Squares after he turns against her and spends the majority of Witch's mini-arc trying to remember who she is, as well as Squares' identity and her relation to him.
  • Big Bad: Of Tetris 2. Subverted in that's she's a brainwashed pawn to the real villain, Squares.
  • Big Good: Could be considered this before her brainwashing since she's a goddess who watches over the two worlds. She's certainly this after being freed from her brainwashing.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: No thanks to Squares. She's eventually broken free from his control.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Marle is the first female antagonist in the series to not be a doppelganger of another character.
    • She's also the first character whose appearance fully changes when selecting her alt. voice (Specifically, selecting her alt. voice allows you to play as her brainwashed self).
  • The Corruption: She's the one responsible for getting much of the cast to battle each other nonstop. And she's victim to it herself.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her golden hair matches her golden eyes. This does not apply to her uncorrupted self, who has blue eyes.
  • Evil Laugh: Noted by others for having a pretty creepy-sounding giggle when brainwashed.
  • Expressive Hair: In Chapter 7, she shows this off as White Marle. When she gets angry at Squares her hair turns back into the horn design it had when she was Dark Marle. It also uncurls slightly whenever she gets surprised.
  • Expy:
    • Can actually be considered this to Dark Arle (and to some extent, Arle Nadja herself). Normally, she is a benevolent individual who ends up getting brainwashed by the Greater-Scope Villain for their own personal gain. During her brainwashed stint, she mostly works behind the scenes both prior to and during the story, getting the rest of the cast to battle each other for some big endgame. Later down the line, the cast works together to free her from her mind control (which she even begs them to do), only to have the Greater-Scope Villain reveal themselves as the Man Behind the Man shortly afterwards and hijack the role as the true main antagonist of the story going forward.
    • In addition, where Marle is a Physical God, Arle herself has also been implied to be a God in Human Form, ironically enough. They both even have similar-sounding names, humorously enough.
    • She can also be seen as one to Ecolo in that both are antagonists whose primary goal seems to be spreading fun to others wherever they go, yet said goal has dangerous results...
  • Eye Color Change: Marle has gold-colored eyes when she is being mind-controlled, when freed she has blue eyes.
  • Fighting from the Inside: As the cast start to reject her idea of "fun", she starts doing this, going as far as outright begging them to help her.
  • Forced into Evil: Arle picks up that her actions aren't truly "fun" in Chapter 2, but if she stops her actions, it isn't "right". This foreshadows that she isn't the villain everyone's looking for, but a puppet in Squares' plans. She even shares Squares' mindset while under his control.
  • Fun Personified: A dark take on it, as she enforces it to reckless abandon. It's later revealed she's a literal case, being the Will of the Worlds' physical form, ensuring that all battles in the dimensions, whether they're either Puyo Puyo or Tetris battles, are always fun.
  • Giggling Villain: Has a rather unsettling tendency to do this when brainwashed.
  • God Is Flawed: Being the Will of the Worlds, she created Squares out of loneliness and gave him a role in managing order while she focused on fun. Unfortunately, her not explaining Squares' role to him properly as well as not taking his maturity into account ends up leading to several bad things happening as a result.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: After being freed from Squares' control, her colors revert to their original white and cyan, which represent her godly status.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Marle is an antagonist and dresses in Red and Black and Evil All Over. When she's freed from her mind control, she changes colors to the traditionally heroic white and cyan.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Once freed from mind control.
  • The Heavy: While she's directly responsible for most of the problems involved during two-thirds of the game, it's later revealed she's only being controlled by the actual Big Bad, which also overlaps with her being The Dragon, as she's carrying out the Big Bad's orders by gathering power from Puyo Puyo/Tetris battles for him to use.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Marle does not look different from any ordinary human, but she's the physical manifestation of the Will of the Worlds, making her human only by her looks alone. Otherwise, she has powers not previously seen in the series, such as erasing memories and being capable of merging and separating entire worlds.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Why she created Squares. This sadly bites her in the ass when he turns on her.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has these as White Marle.
  • Karma Houdini: The fact that it was her irresponsibility that caused the plot of Tetris 2 is glossed over. Squares' decision was the consequence to her Parental Neglect.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Ends up losing her memories after Squares attacks her. She's also shown to be able to wipe peoples' memories away, as she had done to the cast after their previous adventure to maintain the order between worlds.
  • Leitmotif: "Let's Have a Fun Game", from Tetris 2.
  • Little Miss Almighty: She's a Physical God who takes the form of a young girl.
  • Living MacGuffin: Even after being freed from her brainwashing, she still drives a sizable portion of the plot, what with the cast working to help restore both her memories and her powers.
  • Meaningful Name: Marle comes from 丸 (maru), Japanese for "circle", with the first vowel drawn out. Her clothes feature circle motifs, her spells are themed around round objects, and she prefers to play with Puyos (which are round), compared to Squares (who prefers to play with Tetriminos, made of squared blocks). The drawn-out vowel in her name also matches her tendency to do the same when speaking.
  • Mysterious Waif: Described as a mysterious young girl going around causing trouble. She's eventually revealed to be the physical manifestation of the Will of the Worlds.
Ex: All I knew for certain was that Marle had a very special power hidden away inside her. But I never could've imagined what that power would be...
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She's known as the "Dimensional Parasite". Subverted in that she's really just a brainwashed pawn; the real Parasite would be Squares.
  • Nice Girl: Her true personality is this once she's freed from her brainwashing.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Marle had just kept in mind from the start that Squares was mentally a child and taken the time to actually make sure he understood what she wanted from him, he would not have gone on his rampage. Adding to that, if the first thing she taught him wasn't "Worlds merging = bad", he probably would have never had that idea in his head at all.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite the circle Theme Naming, Marle's spell animations when getting high combos show squares. This serves as Foreshadowing that she's being controlled by Squares, and is averted when she's freed from his control.
  • Not Herself: Marle's not in control of her actions. Someone else is making her do this, and it takes a few battles to beat it out of her.
  • The Older Immortal: Towards Squares, as she created him sometime after she first came into being.
  • Older Than They Look: She might look like a young girl, but she's older than the significantly more mature-looking Squares, on the basis that she created him.
  • Order Versus Chaos: The Chaos to Squares' Order. She's a benign case of Chaos, embracing the spontaneous nature of fun, but that causes Squares to turn on her.
  • Paint It Black: Inverted. Once she's finally freed of being controlled, her color palette suddenly turns into the more heroic white and cyan.
  • Physical Goddess: She's the physical manifestation of the Will of the Worlds.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If she had just explained Squares' role more clearly to him, then the events of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 as a whole most likely would not have occurred. Squares wouldn't have turned against her and tried to erase those who threatened his idea of order.
  • Power Parasite: Befitting her title, she absorbs power generated from Puyo Puyo or Tetris battles, which is why she urges everyone to battle endlessly.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Her dress is dominantly this palette, and it's established early on that she's the one causing the incident in Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Start of Darkness: During Witch's mini-arc, she states that Witch's potion helped her regain her memories, though it is unclear if she began to succumb to Squares' mind control because the potion actually enhanced the strength of the spell, she simply had a delayed reaction to the aforementioned spell, or simply having fun while battling ended up triggering said spell's effect.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Tells Amitie to shut her mouth in Chapter 2 when she starts trying to tell her how to actually have fun.
  • Theme Naming:
    • Her spells, Annulus, Circular Dance, Pastel Orb, Shiny Bubble, and Heavenly Sphere, are all themed around round objects.
    • She and her brother/creation Squares are named after geometrical shapes.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her not properly explaining Squares' role in maintaining order to him as well as obsessing over the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds is what leads Squares to turn against her, setting off the plot of Tetris 2.
  • Vague Age: She might look young, but as the physical manifestation of the Will of the Worlds, she's most likely far older than she looks.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: In both Chapters 1 and 2 she runs away after being defeated. She tries it again in Chapter 4, but ends up getting stopped and cornered by the heroes.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She starts acting more unhinged as more people start rejecting her idea of "fun".
  • Walking Spoiler: Her uncorrupted form is this, as it's tied with the reveal she's not the Big Bad, and that she was being controlled by someone else the whole time.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Has yellow irises which is fitting being the scheming Big Bad of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. This is subverted after she becomes White Marle.

     Squares [SPOILERS]

Squares

Character Color: Purple

Voice Actor: Makoto Sahara (Japanese), Zeno Robinson (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_img_squares_4.png

The actual Dimensional Parasite, he lives for order and will erase anything and anyone that he sees as a threat to order.

  • Autobots, Rock Out!: The theme for his last fight, All the power is here now..., rivals Crimson Wave as one of the most intense themes in the franchise.
  • Big Bad: Of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Big Little Brother: He's this to Marle, who created him a good while after she came into being. The rest of the cast is thrown for quite a loop once she reveals this to them.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Squares genuinely doesn't understand why everyone is fighting against him. He sees a world of absolute order as the best possible solution, and their actions are confusing at best and downright malicious (to him) at worst. In the EX chapter, he laments having behaved this way.
  • Born as an Adult: Marle created him in his current form, and this leads to the major reason why he is so petulant and specific about Order. For all intents and purposes, Squares is basically a child in an adult body.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call him out for his Psychopathic Manchild tendencies.
  • Breaking Old Trends: He's the only character to have a canon alternate voice. His alternate voice is used in the Mirror Match in Tetris 2's Chapter EX.
  • Control Freak: Bent on erasing those he deems to be parasites to order and setting things to his own view of right.
  • Dark Is Evil: He has dark hair and wears dark clothes and is the true main antagonist of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Until the final chapter, when he befriends the heroes.
  • Easily Forgiven: For all his past misdeeds and his threats to erase the cast from existence, the protagonists warm up to him pretty easily near the end. Much of their reason for this is his Freudian Excuse (see below).
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Some of his sprites give him rings in his eyes alongside longer hair when using his powers.
  • Expressive Hair: His ahoge rises when he's mad or using a significant amount of power, and droops when he's feeling vulnerable.
  • Final Boss: Of the main story of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Flat "What": Not from him, but this is the rest of the cast's initial reaction following Marle's reveal that Squares is (by technicality) her younger brother. Gradually evolves into Big "WHAT?!", once the cast gets a bit more of their bearings following Marle's reveal.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's actually hard to not feel bad for him. His reason for being such an extremist is because he's mentally a child and never had a chance to develop a personality. When presented with an opportunity to be taught that not everything is black and white, the only person who knew more than him, who created him, instead tried to hide from him and leave him in a state of confusion about his own purpose in life and what he should do next. Eventually after he learns what he really was supposed to be and learns how much he hurt others, he becomes incredibly guilty and regrets his actions. His sole motivation is he genuinely didn't know better.
  • The Fundamentalist: As far as he's concerned, he's the one who's right and anyone who disagrees with him deserves to be erased on the spot. He even says as much in the midst of battle.
Squares: I'M the one who's right!
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: He's stated to be incredibly powerful, and that power is represented by the fact that his Terraformer skill, which creates a T-Spin Triple setup, is the strongest in Tetris 2.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: By the end of the narrative, just as everyone manage to start defeating Squares in a series of battles to weaken his power, the group realizes that Squares physically resembles a grown adult man, but is no different than a baby. He lacks any form of self-awareness, life experience, or moral understanding, and his actions are that of a confused child trying to give his mom exactly what he thinks she wants mixed with the mentality of an adult's abstract reasoning and desire for things to make sense in black and white terms.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Befriends the cast by the end of Tetris 2.
  • Idiot Hair: A feather-shaped one, which is askew and rather expressive.
  • I Hate Past Me: The EX chapter reveals that he's clearly not proud of his past actions, as his interaction with his past self in an Ecolo-induced vision shows.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Like Dark Prince before him, he's shown to have rather immature tendencies despite his appearance. Unlike Dark Prince however, his are most definitely NOT Played for Laughs.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Yet another instance of this trope coming into play during SEGA's run of the Puyo Puyo series. His overall actions in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 result in a relatively darker-than-usual story. In addition, his constant threats to erase the cast from existence aren't something to take lightly, considering how he very much has the power to do just that. That said, he (like Rafisol before him) subverts this somewhat after the cast reaches out to him and gets him to see reason via a fun and orderly battle, leading him to stop what he was doing and befriend them.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He's the reason Marle goes around corrupting everyone. This is so he can absorb their power through Marle and put an end to the so-called threat to order.
  • Manchild: Hoo boy, does this poor guy have a whole load of issues...
  • Meaningful Name: He has square motifs on his clothing, his spells are themed around square-shaped objects, and he prefers to play with Tetriminos (that are composed of squared blocks), compared to Marle (who prefers to play with the rounded Puyo).
  • Mirror Match: Battles against himself in the EX chapter.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After the party finally manages to get him to see reason via showing him a fun and orderly battle, he's horrified at what he's done and agrees to stop. Unfortunately, this soon leads to another problem rearing its ugly head...
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: As mentioned above, he's the actual "Dimensional Parasite".
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Came dangerously close towards erasing everyone from existence with his power just so he could make things right in his own image. Thankfully, everyone manages to talk him down from going through with it.
  • Order Is Not Good: Though he perpetuates order, his underdeveloped moral compass makes him extremely overzealous in trying to sustain it, making him the bad guy.
  • Order Versus Chaos: He is the Order to Marle's Chaos, created to ensure balance in the universe.
  • Parental Neglect: While Marle says that she's his sister of sorts, she still created him and failed to properly raise him, leading to his Start of Darkness. It's only towards the end of the story that she realizes she was basically his mom, and he never got the proper moral framework or context to understand why things don't have to be absolutely orderly.
  • Physical God: He's a god-like being created by another to manage order, and that's before he nabs the power that he had the brainwashed Marle gather. As a testament to how powerful he is, even the Dark Prince and Ex both comment that facing him would be a daunting task.
  • Power of Creation: His Terraformer skill. His preset is for a *T-Spin Triple*.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His hair grows longer and wavier when doing certain attacks.
  • Power Incontinence: Right after vowing to not use his powers to erase the cast from existence, his body begins to develop an intense reaction from all the power he absorbed, to the point that he could possibly explode if he could not release it, potentially even wiping out all who were present with him at the time. Per Marle's instruction, the cast fights him once more in order to help him release all of his pent-up energy in a safer manner. Afterwards, he faints from the stress.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: His moral compass can be best described as "If it disturbs the order, erase it." And he will not hesitate to do that just to shut you up if you dare attempt to defy him. Other characters drive the point further by actually comparing him to a child.
  • Secret Art: His third Skill Battle Skill, which is a T-Spin Triple Terraformer, is unique to him.
  • Spoiled Brat: Upon assessing his motivations to put everything back in order and having an obsession for Marle, the party comes to realize that Squares behaves like an immature kid tossing a tantrum and figures out before Marle can say herself that he is actually younger than her despite his looks. Ecolo even outright calls him such. Squares really doesn't like it when people find out about his Big Little Brother status.
  • Stealth Pun:
    • He never had a chance to develop an actual personality (beyond knowing he had to look after order, and his relation to Marle), and his spells are based on shapes with flat sides. In other words? He's a Flat Character.
    • Squares is always talking about being "right," such as making the "right choice," seeing things to the "right outcome," and being "the one who's right." He is named after a shape made of right angles.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: He sports these to highlight his power. Marle having these in the beginning is not a coincidence, as it's a sign that she's been brainwashed by him.
  • Tautological Templar: He eventually gets the idea that, since he's the one watching over order, those who oppose his method must be conspiring against it, and deserve to be erased.
  • Theme Naming:
    • His spells, Tetrahedron, Harmonic Box, Adamantine Cube, Dark Rhombus, and Cosmic Rectangle, are all themed around Platonic solids and quadrilateral polygons.
      • Four Is Death: All of the above shapes are also related to the number 4 in some way, with a tetrahedron having four faces and four vertices (but made of triangles) and the others being quadrilaterals or made of quadrilaterals.
    • He and his sister/creator Marle are named after geometrical shapes.
  • This Cannot Be!: Whenever he sustains massive damage:
    Squares: No, impossible!
  • Vague Age: Other than the fact he's younger than Marle, it's not known how old Squares is. He might be extremely old, but no definite answer is ever given.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In Chapter 7, he suffers this following his losing streak to the cast, resorting to calling everyone else Dimensional Parasites for trying to destroy his perfect order.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact he's the one that caused the incident by proxy is enough to turn the timeline of events on its head.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He was created to manage order for Marle. Unfortunately, Marle had never truly defined his role to him all too clearly, resulting in him viewing everyone else as a threat to order.
  • What Is This Feeling?: His reaction to his face getting warm from blushing.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: This was basically the cast's reaction once Marle revealed his identity.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Has yellow irises and is the actual Big Bad of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, being the one who has been pulling the strings by possessing Marle.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite looking mature, he's actually younger than Marle. A fact that the rest of the cast find rather difficult to wrap their minds around, given his appearance.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Marle's final defeat at the hands of the cast during her brainwashed stint, Squares finally reveals himself by stealing away the power he had brainwashed her into gathering for him and walks out on her.

The iconic mascot and namesake of Puyo Puyo developer Sonic Team, the Blue Blur joins the roster as a Guest Fighter. For his tropes in general, go here.

  • Blow You Away: His Blue Tornado spell, originally from Sonic Heroes.
  • Golden Super Mode: The animation of Limit Break, his strongest "spell", has him transform into Super Sonic.
  • Guest Fighter: While he's not the first character to appear in a main Puyo Puyo game that does not originate from either Puyo Puyo or Madou Monogatari (Billy Burn from JUMP HERO being the first), Sonic is the first one to be a playable character.
  • Leitmotif: Tropical Resort Act 1, the first stage theme from Sonic Colors, serves as his theme in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Promoted to Playable: Sonic had many references and cameos in Puyo Puyo games over the years, most notably the "Sonic" Puyo skin and a crossover in Puyo Puyo!! Quest, but Tetris 2 marks the first time that he's playable in a proper Puyo Puyo game.
  • Secret A.I. Moves: When he appears as an opponent in the Boss Raid mode, he has a unique Skill that greatly increases gravity on the player's field.
  • Sore Loser: Surprisingly enough, he gets quite upset if he loses a match, demanding a rematch right away.
  • Years Too Early: One of Sonic's win quotes is something to this extent:
"All right! I won! It'll take you 100 years to catch up to THIS hedgehog!"

Alternative Title(s): Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
