Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up] It'd be the first example on the new YMMV page, if added.

In a work for an anglophone audience, I think there's still scope to call out the read-vs.-pronounced mismatch, but agreed that it's a lot like the carrot/moron example. If you primarily know it from Welsh, it's not going to be the same sort of issue.

Ah, I see. You're better off focussing on how archaic and baggage-filled the name is because of the legends. In this day and age, a kid called Myrddin might well be bullied in school, but I don't think the pronunciation is going to raise any eyebrows.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up][up] Well, okay, my previous post was in response to the non-edit part of your post, so I'm responding here to the edited part of your post. If we're talking anglophone, it's possible you may have a point about the pronunciation sounding weird. I'm happy to go with whatever consensus there is on that front. I'm Welsh, so I'm not going to be the best judge on whether the sound would be narm to non-Welsh ears.

[up] I think they're aiming for an archaic, Arthurian and otherworldly feel - but I'm not convinced the usual pronunciation would work that way for an American audience, who are more likely to associate Murthin with names like Mervin that have very different social connotations.

I might hold off until I see if trailers or interviews have any audio, though. If the creators decide to pronounce it entirely differently (and he's a time-travelling supervillain of unknown origin, created by a Canadian author, so who knows), that might skew things again.

Yeah, I could see a "Marvin" type reaction coming from American audiences. Thinking back to when Stargate SG-1 was still airing on television, when the Ori plot started, Daniel Jackson — the linguist — had to introduce the name Myrddin. He ended up pronouncing it "Meerdin", which was cringe-inducing for those of us who know how it should be pronounced, but I don't know what Americans thought of it.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lists the fact that the camera album has the three pictures Zelda took at the beginning of the game as Developer's Foresight, but that doesn't seem like the right place to put it. Shouldn't it be filed under Call-Back instead?

Does this example of Draco in Leather Pants on the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom page count as a proper use of the trope?

  • Draco in Leather Pants: Due to Ganondorf having a huge dose of Adaptational Attractiveness along with the “Rehydrated Ganondorf” meme turning him into Mr. Fanservice, it’s caused some fans to think he’s a more sympathetic character instead of being just an Evil Overlord, except Ganondorf is far worse than his previous incarnations since they at least had a Freudian Excuse such as being raised by two evil witches, seeing his people suffer or being the reincarnation of Demise. This one has no such excuse and what little redeeming qualities he has are now gone.

While true, most, if not all, of the more sympathetic takes on this iteration of Ganondorf were prevalent pre-release. Apart from a few fans arguing that They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot in making this iteration of Ganondorf more sympathetic than his predecessors (and/or applying Alternative Character Interpretation and Fridge Horror at best or Ron the Death Eater at worst to King Rauru and the Kingdom of Hyrule) most seem perfectly content to acknowledge that Tears of the Kingdom Ganondorf is a power-hungry Evil Overlord and Omnicidal Maniac, who ultimately only cares about himself.

Should the example stay as it is, be reworded (potentially to reflect the more sympathetic takes on Ganondorf that have emerged post-release), or be removed?

Not sure about this entry for Action Girl...

  • Resident Evil 2 (Remake): Flan, thanks to The Smurfette Principle. Her kit consists almost entirely of heavy weaponry that's capable of dishing out major pain. The downsides to this is the almost complete lack of spare ammo and healing items.

The issue I have is that Flan is just... an animate block of flan. Really, all the Tofu "characters" are Palette Swaped Joke Characters for the Tofu survivor campaign. They all run the exact same scenario too so I'm just not sure...

[up][up][up]yes

[up][up] The example contradicts itself, or unnecessarily long. The trope is about audience thinking a villain is more heroic that in reality, but half of the example is Evil Is Sexy and the other goes into exposition how much of a villain he is.

I got a few things to ask about the tropes for Sonic Goes Berserk from Dorkly Originals.

  • At 0:48, does the offscreen death of Amy Rose at the hands of Sonic counts as a Sound-Only Death, a Gory Discretion Shot, or both?
  • From 1:17, Shadow prepares himself to get killed by Sonic and have something taken from him just for Sonic to just leave him with Shadow begging Sonic to kill him to no avail. Is that an example of Not Worth Killing while is Shadow a Death Seeker?

Is it still a Furry Reminder if a Little Bit Beastly character does something that the animal they're based on would do in real life, even if they're a human with animal body parts?

I could swear we have a separate trope for this - I remember a bunch of examples about Cat Girl/Cat Folk characters doing stereotypical cat things even if they're just the "cat ears and that's it" type. But I can't remember what it's called.

Edit: It's My Instincts Are Showing, although the definition seems a bit confused (it talks about just non-human species generically, but the examples are 95 percent animal people).

Crossover Punchline is about a brief crossover Played for Laughs. Magical Girl Alisa is a reaccuring thing in the game and one of the playable characters (Rion) even sang its anime theme. So it is definently not brief. Any thoughts on it?

[up][up][up] I've seen My Instincts Are Showing applied to werewolves, characters with Animorphism and the like, and they strike me as correct uses.

[up][up] Babies don't know how to hold it in normally (not under duress), so that's misuse.

Any help for this one?

Found this on a RWBY character page for a race of beings known as "the People Pleasers". I've gone through all the indexed character archetypes and even the stock character index, too, and I can't find any character archetype that is being deconstructed here. Neither Easily Conquered World nor White Man's Burden are character archetypes, they're narrative tropes. Jaune is already an example of Heroic Wannabe for this example, which is on his own character page.

My thought is that this should really be an example of Deconstructed Trope (White Man's Burden), where it takes a straight example of the trope (the "white man" character (Jaune) waltzing into the natives' realm to successfully rescue them) and then explores just how harmful to the local population that behaviour really is.

Should I make the change and move this to the work's main page instead of the character pages?

  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the "hapless denizens who need a human hero to save them" peoples found in many portal fantasies. At first glance they seem like fragile, stupid children in constant danger who need Jaune to save them from accidentally killing themselves on a regular basis. However, it's revealed that Jaune is preventing them from Ascension due to projecting his own misunderstanding of it over their own knowledge, claiming that they're too stupid to know what's best for them and putting his own need to be the hero over their wants and needs. The constant accidents he "saves" them from are actually their attempts to escape from him, and once they succeed, he realizes that his "help" was hurting them.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Found this in Mook Maker, though I highlighted the questionable part in boldface.

  • The Hell Greed in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening acts like this, spawning enemies of three varieties (Hell Prides, Lusts, and Sloths). Interesting side effect: the spot where they spawn Sloths (the ones with most Hit Points) has more combo videos than all other places combined.

Is the last sentence even necessary? The fact that it mentions "combo videos" make it seem like this is an inserted gameplay trivia/meta.
