While the original British version of the film contains a few references to other works, the American Same Language Dub known as Doogal has a countless number of shout-outs. It is perhaps the most (in)famous aspect about the whole movie.
The Original Film
- When Ermintrude is rescuing Dougal, she is being lowered silently while tied to a rope.
- When the team discusses Zebedee's Disney Death, Dylan's way of mourning is by saying "Zeb's dead, baby. Zeb's dead."
- When the gang arrives at the temple where the second diamond is located and after Dougal pushes a button on the throne, several laser beams activate all around the room.
- As Dylan lists the martial arts he knows, one of them is "anything-you-can-do".
- After Zeebad takes the second diamond, he asks them where the third diamond is. They refuse and promptly back away as Zeebad advances towards them while saying "Resistance is futile." This reference is (fittingly) kept in the film's American redub.
Doogal
- As Dylan turns her opera concert into a rock concert, he calls Ermintrude "Dairy Queen". When the moose finds Zeebad for the first time, he jokingly calls him the Blue Man Group.
- When Soldier Sam struggles to walk after Zeebad activates him, Zeebad replies with "This ain't the ballet, nutcracker".
- After recruiting Sam into his plans, Zeebad mockingly calls Zebedee "Zebedee-Doo-Dah".
- When Train first appears, he pulls an Actor Allusion by saying "I'm the train, and you're not".
- Being a bunny, Dylan says "What's up, doc?" during the camping scene. Much later, during the credits, Judi Dench says That's All, Folks! verbatim.
- During the same scene, right before he goes to bed, Brian complains about Master Chief eating something.
- When Brian tries to communicate with the moose, he recites (and mangles) the hook from "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". The moose likewise responds with "Su-sussudio" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida".
- From his conversation with the moose, Brian erroneously states that the moose would grant them three wishes if they stood still.
- As Doogal resists Zeebad's attempts to tell him about the diamonds' locations, he spitefully calls him Frosty.
- When Ermintrude rescues Doogal from Zeebad's lair, she calls him Doggy Dog.
- As Zeebad prepares to defeat Zebedee in their Wizard Duel, he mentions that there would be only one spring to rule them all. If that wasn't enough, he fancies himself as the Lord of the Springs immediately afterward. Sometime later, Dylan channels his inner Gollum when he obtains the first diamond, saying "My precious..." in his best Gollum impression.
- As Train crosses the bridge in the volcano, he repeats to himself, "I think I can, I think I can...".
- As Doogal and his friends find themselves trapped in the volcano thanks to Zeebad's meddling, Ermintrude states her intentions to go out singing like Aretha.
- After Dylan decides to modify Train's carriage (now turned into a boat thanks to Zebedee's box) into a makeshift balloon, he mentions that he got the idea from Pimp My Boat.
- As Sam annoys Zeebad with his singing while on their rowboat, Zeebad recommends that he sings "The Sound of Silence" next (obviously meaning for him to stay silent). He calls Sam "Garfunkel" shortly after.
- When Doogal's team nears the island where one of the diamonds are, Dylan refers to it as Skull Island—even commenting that it looks like it did in the movies. As the team prepares to land, he begins hoping that Kong hasn't awoken.
- As he and Zeebad near the temple where the second diamond is being held, Sam proudly calls themselves a couple of tomb raiders.
- After Doogal accidentally activates the temple's lasers, Dylan mentions that they're very Pink Floyd.
- When Ermintrude volunteers to try and obtain the second diamond, she states that she was a dancer on Soul Train.
- When the skeletons ambush Doogal and his friends, one of them says "Here's Johnny!". Another says "Bring out your dead!", and another just flat-out says "Pirates of the Caribbean"—to which another tells him to stop with the Disney jokes. Another simply says "[[Wazzup?]]".
- Ermintrude compares the aforementioned skeletons to Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Dawn Of The Dead.
- As Dylan rambles about the martial arts he knows, he starts by saying: "I trained with Morpheus; I know kung fu". Other martial arts he claims to know include John Woo and Wu-Tang Clan.
- Dylan soon makes another Matrix reference, asking to be referred to as Neo when he begins to fight the skeletons.
- As Ermintrude begins fighting the skeletons, some of her battle cries include "It's hammer time", "You can't touch this", and "Wax on, wax off".
- When the skeletons fuse into one giant skeleton, Doogal tries to pass himself and his friends off as Muggles on their way to Hogwarts, as a pick-me-up for He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Needless to say, it doesn't work.
- After Brian realizes that the second diamond was taken as he and his friends were fighting the skeletons, Zeebad (who snatched it) remarked that he must have watched CSI. Zeebad then begins a speech thanking the Academy before he's interrupted by Sam.
- As he and his friends prepare to leave the temple, Doogal refers to it as the Temple of Doom.
- During the train battle sequence, Zeebad refers to Train as Thomas the Tank Engine, while Sam is referred to as Mini-Zee by Dylan.
- During the same sequence, after Sam refuses Zeebad's orders to execute Brian, invoking the Geneva Convention, Zeebad rebukes him, not caring if it's a Star Trek convention. To drive the point home, Zeebad orders Sam to beam Brian out, and even says the derogatory term for the Star Trek fanbase, "trekkies".
- When Sam tries to tell Zeebad about the pressure of their train being too much to handle, Zeebad, mistaking Sam's comments for another type of "pressure", gives him advice a la Dr. Phil, even name-dropping him.
- As Doogal and his friends recover from the train battle, Brian mentions being Dazed and Confused as he admits to accidentally spilling the beans on the third diamond's location to Zeebad.
- On the villains' side of the aftermath, Zeebad, after deciding that Sam is of no more use to him, says: "As my apprentice, you're fired!".
- When Doogal begins waking up his team upon finding their home village, Dylan mentions that he was dreaming about jamming with McCartney.
- When Eemintrude uses her voice to free the people trapped in the roundabout, Zeebad compares it to the Emergency Broadcast System.
- During the final battle, Dylan encourages Ermintrude to bend it like Beckham.
- Even the credits have a couple of shout-outs of their own, such as the Moose calling Zeebad a Smurf.
- Trailer-only: as Doogal and his allies overlook a vast area of snow done by Zeebad's magic (actually their home village), Ermintrude ribs about how the then-upcoming Ice Age 2 was being shot there.
