Shu's older sister and the patient zero of the Apocalypse Virus. She eventually took control of it, starting the Lost Christmas.

  • Anthropomorphic Personification: After her physical body was destroyed, she became an embodiment of the Apocalypse Virus itself.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Her role as "Eve" is to spread the Apocalypse Virus throughout the world. Her Apocalypse Virus infection and Shu's rejection of her affections is what causes her to initiate Lost Christmas and doom Japan.
  • Ax-Crazy: When she's infected by the virus, she goes nuts. Including tying down Gai, shooting him, and almost murdering him before Shu stops her.
  • Big Brother Attraction: Inverted. She claimed that she was in love with her little brother and stole his First Kiss. She even asked Shu to promise to marry her and nearly forced this on him before Shu rejected her and her infection grew out of control. It's revealed in Episode 20 that she's wanted Shu to be her "Adam" before he was even born. Although, given that she was infected with the Virus and was turning into "Eve" before Shu was conceived, her attraction to him may have been entirely caused by the Virus.
  • Big "NO!": Twice. The first is when she causes Lost Christmas, and then her death in the final episode.
  • Bloodlust: She wore Gai's spilled blood as lipstick.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Getting infected by the Apocalypse Virus drives her insane, and may or may not be the reason behind her attraction to Shu.
  • Cool Big Sis: She appeared to be a loving sister to Shu, before things got creepy.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: She was Shu's kind Cool Big Sis until she got corrupted by the Apocalypse Virus.
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: She does this to Gai/"Triton" when Shu and she find him washed ashore on the beach.
  • Creepy Child: She turned very creepy whenever she dropped the cute act to lust after her brother or try to murder Gai.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Pink hair and eyes. A thing she shares with her vessel Inori.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's quite cute and appears to be kind, but her mind was warped by the virus, making her psychotic and sadistic.
  • Enemy Within: Since the events of Episode 12, her soul lives on as an evil entity from within Inori.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Subverted. Flashbacks show her wearing a white flower pin on the left side of her hair. She's initially depicted as a gentle and sweet young girl, but that was all an act as her mind had been corrupted by the Apocalypse Virus since before Shu was born.
  • Grand Theft Me: She has attempted to possess Inori's body several times in the second half of the anime. It seems to be easiest when Inori is scared or in a situation where her brief takeover saves Inori in a disturbing way.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: Shu doesn't return Mana's incestous feelings and strongly rejects her when she asks him to become her "Adam". He's even more repulsed when Mana takes over the body of his love interest.
  • Kick the Dog: She calls Inori a monster. Needless to say that Shu is pissed.
  • Killed Off for Real: She seems to die a first time when Shu delivers a Mercy Kill on her. Her corrupted spirit continues to live inside Inori for the rest of the anime and she gets resurrected in Episode 21. Then she dies again for real in the last episode.
  • Love Before First Sight: She chose Shu to be her "Adam" before he was even born. Her Slasher Smile while looking at her pregnant mother is possibly one of the most disturbing moments in the series, as is a similar one looking over Shu as an infant.
  • Mask of Sanity: Mana's mind was corrupted by the Apocalypse Virus long before Lost Christmas; as much as 8 years beforehand. Her "normal" personality is basically a fabrication.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "Mana" is a force or spiritual power in Polynesian culture. Naturally, as the person who started Lost Christmas, she is the the essential piece in Keido's scheme to create a new world.
    • Mana is an informal alternative name for irmã, the Portuguese translation for sister.
    • She is called "Eve" by Keido as she was the first person to be infected by the virus and he wants to pull an Adam and Eve Plot with her.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Her inability to take Shu's rejection very well causes Lost Christmas and dooms Japan. When Shu rejects her again, she starts spreading the virus across the world.
  • Not Quite Dead: In Episode 12, Shu stabs her spirit that has become one with the Apocalypse Virus and Gai seems to die with her. Turns out Mana's corrupted self continues to exist within Inori and tries to possess her body several times until it's successful in Episode 21.
  • Patient Zero: She was the first person infected by the Apocalypse Virus.
  • Promotion to Parent: After her mother's death, she was left alone with Shu on Oshima.
  • Psycho Pink: Mana is a pink-haired girl who usually appears wearing a pink dress in flashbacks. Despite looking kind and harmless at first, her mind has been corrupted by the Apocalypse Virus from a young age, resulting in her becoming a psycho with a creepy incestous obsession with her younger brother.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: In execution, the trope is somewhat downplayed due to its brevity, but it's still laden with Squick. To count off all the factors that make her brief attempt at forcefully getting in Shu's pants all the more creepy: they're siblings, she had attempted to stab Shu's eye out in an earlier episode, she is the virus that is slowly killing everyone in Loop 7, she attempted to rape Shu through another person's body, (his actual love interest, for bonus emotional turmoil) and the fact that she should be dead at this point.
  • Reality Warper: As the first person infected by the virus, she's essentially the originator of Void technology.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes glowed red when the virus began to infect her. This is notable because it is only after Shu Mercy Kills her that she wakes up with her regular pink eyes, a sign that she's finally free from the virus and is truly herself.
  • The Reveal: She turns out to be Shu's older sister and Inori was meant to be her vessel.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Subverted. Initial flashbacks show her as a nice and cheerful girl. However, as the Apocalypse Virus corrupted her, she became an Ax-Crazy Yandere.
  • Sanity Slippage: The virus starts to make her become an entirely other person. By the time she realizes this (and is subsequently rejected at this point), everything goes downhill.
  • Together in Death: Gai disappears together with her soul, twice.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: She gave Gai a gun and bullets as a Christmas present and asked him to shoot at the star of a tree for her, only for the bullet to rebound back at him and almost kill him. Mana's eerily calm behavior throughout the scene makes clear it all went as she intended.
  • Villainous Incest: The Apocalypse Virus, along with making her insane and sadistic, causes her to lust after her younger brother Shu.
  • Walking Spoiler: Mana is a very important figure in the backstories of Shu and Gai as well as the cause of Lost Christmas. For these reasons, it's basically impossible to discuss her without giving away some major revelations.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: While she may have had feelings for her brother Shu, it was the Apocalypse Virus that infected her what slowly drove her insane. When Shu rejected her, she snapped and initiated Lost Christmas.

Yahiro's younger brother, who is infected with the Apocalypse Virus.

  • Big Brother Worship: He really looks up to Yahiro, to the point he wants to die before having to acknowledge Yahiro's real personality.
  • Body Horror: He's reached Stage 4 of the Apocalypse Virus with the crystals covering half of his body and making it hard for him to speak.
  • Disability Superpower: Like Gai, his advanced stage of the Apocalypse Virus allows him to see one's Void and their hidden personality.
  • Driven to Suicide: At one point he's reaching for a knife before he's stopped by Yahiro. He gets his wish later.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Has a rather girly appearance, which his dress-like hospital gown only intensifies.
  • The Load: Yahiro secretly sees him as a burden.
  • Made of Iron: He gets stabbed by Daryl's Endlave, smashed into the ceiling, and falls from there to the ground, and is still alive afterwards.
  • Mercy Kill: He begs Shu to kill him so he can die with happy memories of his brother.

Shu's father. He was a genius scientist who died during Lost Christmas, before the start of the series.

  • The Atoner: One possible interpretation of his work in creating the Void Genome. He had a lot to atone for.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: See Genius Ditz below.
  • Death by Origin Story: He was confirmed to have been killed during Lost Christmas when first mentioned. It was Keido's fault — creating the Void Genome on his own had been the absolute last straw.
  • Forgets to Eat: So often that it was Haruka's efforts to keep him fed that eventually resulted in him noticing her.
  • Genius Ditz: Flashbacks show him to be somewhat of a silly person, but he was also incredibly brilliant. He created the Void Genome and even earned Keido's respect after all.
  • I Work Alone: Due to being too easily distracted otherwise. It ends up getting him killed.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Less so than Keido, but he still had a significant amount of blood on his hands.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After he refused to abort the pregnancy that killed his wife for fear of scuppering the Fourth Apocalypse.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the flashbacks, if he's not smiling, then something serious is happening.
  • Perma-Stubble: After discovering the Apocalypse meteor.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: He was his wife's professor during her university years.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was good friends with Keido, though his string of successes (including the creation of the Void Genome) caused their relationship to sour spectacularly, eventually resulting in his murder at his old friend's hands.
