Armed Detective Agency

    Ryuunosuke Akutagawa

Ryuunosuke Akutagawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akutagawa_beast.png

Akutagawa was saved in the riverside by the still-living Sakunosuke Oda and made his apprentice. Akutagawa joins the Armed Detective Agency to find his sister Gin, who was taken away from him by Dazai years ago.

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He wears a black suit with a white tie and is as much of a badass as in the main timeline.
  • Badass Longcoat: Even if the color is different, he wouldn't be Akutagawa without wearing a long coat that he uses as his weapon.
  • The Berserker: He fights more like a rabid beast than a man, even jumping on others so he can dig his teeth into their necks.
  • Big Brother Instinct: His main goal is to find his missing younger sister and kill the man who separated him from her.
  • Byronic Hero: While undoubtedly more heroic in character than the Akutagawa from the main series, this Akutagawa is still selfish, ill-tempered, impulsive, amoral, dangerous, and vengeful.
  • Commonality Connection: He quickly becomes close allies with Tanizaki because both want to eliminate anyone who harms their little sisters.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: After Kousuke tells him he wants to be a "hero" like Oda, Akutagawa gives him a brutal beating to give him a taste of reality and make him understand he wouldn't last a day in a line of work that involves killing.

  • Friend to All Children: Surprisingly, Akutagawa does a good job at babysitting Oda's adopted children and gets along with them very well.
  • Happily Adopted: While not officially adopted, Oda does think of Akutagawa as one of the orphans under his care and his other adopted children see Akutagawa as an older brother.
  • I Will Find You: His main goal is finding his long-lost younger sister Gin.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's quite a bit rough around the edges and brutal, but has a softer side deep down. Despite his difficult personality, Akutagawa does love his little sister Gin, takes good care of Oda's adopted children, manages to become friends with the members of the Agency, and can hold a friendly conversation with Atsushi when they aren't fighting.
  • Mathematician's Answer: Akutagawa gets in trouble for improperly filling out a report by making numerous errors and only writing that "[he] cut up and disposed of everything" with no context.
  • Mundane Utility: Akutagawa's incredible reflexes make it a cinch for him to use Rashomon to catch dropped tea without spilling a drop. He also uses Rashomon to make a playground for Oda's adopted children.
  • Odd Friendship: He bonds with Kenji Miyazawa while helping him plant rice. They get along very well despite their vastly different personalities.
  • Red Baron: He's known as the "Mad Dog Who Doesn't Bark" for his viciousness and tendency to slip into a berserker rage despite rarely speaking to the people he's killing.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Akutagawa spends the entire story in the middle of one, searching endlessly for the man who kidnapped his little sister so he can tear him to pieces.
  • Squishy Wizard: While his ability, "Rashomon", is formidable, Akutagawa's body is frail from malnutrition and his mad pursuit of revenge. As a result, Oda is able to easily outpace Akutagawa and stay one step ahead of him despite the latter's long-ranged ability.
  • Street Smart: He manages to track down and bust a trafficking ring because he became a bit too familiar with their methods when avoiding such criminals in the slums during his childhood.
  • Sweet Tooth: He adds four sugar cubes to his tea. He also once saved up 300 chocolate bars from working as a bodyguard or assisting in fights, which got him sick from eating only chocolate every day. It's justified because he grew up in the slums where the kids needed to fight if they wanted to taste sweets.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: It's pointed out that even though he's on the side of the Agency in this timeline, he still shows signs of the soul of a villain.

    Sakunosuke "Odasaku" Oda

Sakunosuke "Odasaku" Oda

This is the only timeline where Oda survives the war against Mimic, as he wasn't present during its main events. He left Port Mafia two years prior to BEAST's events and now works in the Armed Detective Agency. He's in the process of publishing his first book and is raising several orphans.

  • Combat Clairvoyance: His ability "Flawless" lets him see a few seconds into the future whenever his life is in danger, letting him draw up a quick plan to avert that future through his own skills.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: His clairvoyance allows him to predict where his bullets are going to land once he fires them. He uses this to perform Bizarre and Improbable Ballistics, such as ricocheting bullets off walls into people's heads.
  • Mentor Archetype: He acts as a mentor for Akutagawa, prodding at his flaws and forcing him to be a better person for the sake of joining the Armed Detective Agency.
  • Parental Substitute: He acts as a father figure to Akutagawa, thinking of him as one of the many orphans he has taken in.
  • Point of Divergence: In the main timeline, all of the orphans under his care are murdered, dragging him back into the fray until the day he dies. In BEAST, all of the orphans are alive and well because Oda never got involved with Mimic, eventually leading to Oda taking in Akutagawa and helping him find a job at the Agency.
  • Reformed Criminal: He was once a member of Port Mafia, but he has since become an author and a member of the Armed Detective Agency.

Port Mafia

    Atsushi Nakajima

Atsushi Nakajima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/atsushi_beast.jpg

Atsushi was recruited by Dazai to Port Mafia at a young age in place of Akutagawa. He's the infamous "White Reaper" who is completely obedient to his boss Dazai's orders and murders anyone who tries to assassinate Dazai.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Atsushi's claws in his tiger form are so sharp that they Clean Cut virtually anything they scratch against. Human bodies might as well be silken tofu to him.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: As painful as the restraints he has to wear are, he's much more afraid of what he could do if he turns into a tiger and attacks people he doesn't want to hurt.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Atsushi's ability is still the "Beast Underneath the Moonlight", only its abilities are played to horrifying effect when Atsushi effortlessly cleaves through human bodies with his claws and crushes people's skulls between his jaws.
  • Badass Longcoat: Due to taking Akutagawa's place in Port Mafia in this timeline, Atsushi wears a black longcoat that makes him look awesome and scary at the same time.
  • Combo Platter Powers: In addition to his tiger-themed Super-Strength, Super-Speed, and Absurdly Sharp Claws, Atsushi possesses a powerful Healing Factor that lets him shrug off being shot with ease, though he still notes that it's painful and terrifying to him.
  • Commonality Connection: He quickly strikes up friendly conversation with Akutagawa over their shared pasts as impoverished orphans. In fact, they would have left on friendly terms had Akutagawa not opened the envelope and seen the photograph of his sister.
  • Consummate Professional: Atsushi will fulfill Dazai's orders to a T, no questions asked. He's stoic and unhesitating while on the job and never disobeys any command given to him.
  • Cowardly Lion: Atsushi says he's jealous of a soldier who does not fear death, as despite Atsushi's emotionless facade, he's indeed a scared teenager who is afraid of pain and killing. But his fear of Dazai is so much worse that Atsushi resolves to become a reaper so death will not claim him despite his fear of it.
  • Deliberately Painful Clothing: He wears painful restraints that cut into him to prevent himself from unwillingly transforming into a tiger and going on a rampage.
  • The Dreaded: He's capable of instilling an overwhelming fear of death even on venerated soldiers who think nothing of blowing themselves to pieces if it means killing their enemies.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Calling this Atsushi evil is a stretch, but he's dangerous and ruthless when performing his job as a member of Port Mafia. He still cares very deeply about Kyouka and wants to protect her.
  • Evil Wears Black: In contrast with the main timeline, Atsushi dresses in entirely black clothes to highlight his villainous role in the BEAST timeline.
  • Forced into Evil: He kills people because Dazai orders him to and due to his lack of control over his tiger form, he had no choice but to work for Port Mafia.

  • Friendly Neighborhood Gangster: Despite being a feared member of Port Mafia, this Atsushi is still the same sweet guy of the main series at heart. He has a very friendly conversation with Akutagawa until he discovers he's looking for Dazai's secretary Gin, which makes him an enemy to Port Mafia.
  • Fur and Loathing: He wears a fur-lined coat and is a far deadlier person in the BEAST timeline.
  • Healing Factor: Atsushi quickly heals from any wound he's dealt. Bullet holes close in seconds and nothing an entire armed mercenary troupe has in hand is able to deal any lasting damage to him.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: When going full tiger, he can bite off a man's head with ease.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Ridiculously strong, lightning fast, and has a Healing Factor to shrug off anything short of a warehouse full of explosives.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Atsushi has sworn to follow all of Dazai's orders to the letter, and the mere mention of the one time he didn't follow Dazai's orders sends Atsushi into a mental and emotional breakdown.
  • Nominal Villain: He's a member of the Port Mafia only because not having control over his tiger transformation leaves him with no other real options of how to live. He really hates hurting people, but he's so scared of his boss Dazai that he follows his orders to kill without question.
  • Patricide: He killed the headmaster of his orphanage, the closest thing he had to an adoptive father, in a panic when the latter gave him a box which Atsushi thought contained a bomb, but it really was a birthday present.
  • Power Limiter: Because Atsushi never gained control over the tiger in this universe, he's forced to wear painful restraints to prevent turning into a tiger and killing people.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's Dazai's personal attack dog, slaughtering scores of people without a twitch of visible fear or remorse. But he's still a genuine Nice Guy off the clock and cares deeply for Kyouka, as well as having a friendly conversation with Akutagawa before learning that they're enemies.
  • Red Baron: He's known as the "White Reaper" as one of the mafia's most dangerous assassins.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He must get rid of any emotion to do his job as an assassin and kill people in cold blood. Out of work, however, he's gentle with Kyouka and can hold a friendly conversation with Akutagawa until he finds out he's a threat to Dazai.
  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: The only time Atsushi went against Dazai's orders was when he returned to his orphanage for his birthday. That day, the headmaster gave him a ticking box. Thinking it was a bomb, Atsushi freaked out and killed the headmaster. Afterwards, Atsushi discovered the box contained a clock and a birthday card and he also learned the headmaster had done everything in his power to hide Atsushi's tiger form from everyone. The guilt over killing the man who cared about him like a father is what drives him to carry out Dazai's orders without fail.
  • Trauma Button:
    • Dazai merely mentioning the one and only time Atsushi disobeyed his orders causes Atsushi to freak out so badly he's reduced to a trembling mess cowering in the floor because he's been reminded of the moment he killed the Headmaster.
    • In the movie, the mere sight of a child crying over a dropped candy causes a PTSD episode for Atsushi, as it triggers the flashback of the time the Headmaster tortured him by nailing his foot to the floor.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: White-haired like the Atsushi of the main series, but this one is a ruthless assassin of Port Mafia.

    Osamu Dazai (Unmarked Spoilers

Osamu Dazai

Dazai never left Port Mafia and succeeded Mori as the boss after he was killed by Mimic.
  • Affably Evil: He's the feared and ruthless boss of Port Mafia, but his only conversation with Odasaku reveals glimpses of his amicable personality from the main timeline, as he tries to have a casual conversation and joke around with Odasaku. Sadly, this only creeps Odasaku out because he has no idea of why the most dangerous man in Yokohama would act like they're friends.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: While the Dazai of the main timeline still lives, this Dazai chooses to die in order to protect the only timeline where Odasaku survives.
  • The Don: He took over Port Mafia after Mori died during the Mimic incident. With him as the leader, Port Mafia's influence spans even greater than Mori's influence managed.
  • Dramatic Irony: Dazai approaches Oda at a bar and acts as though they're close friends, tipping the audience off to the fact that Dazai has memories from the main storyline. It then quickly becomes clear that Dazai is trying to pretend he's still friends with a man who can only grow more annoyed as an apparent stranger acts overly familiar with him.
  • Driven to Suicide: Dazai throws himself off the ledge of the main Port Mafia building because he told Atsushi and Akutagawa to protect the Book and there can't be more than two people who know the true power of the Book.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Dazai jumps from the Port Mafia's building with a smile on his face, being satisfied with the fact that Odasaku is alive and Akutagawa and Atsushi will protect this timeline in his place.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Because of remembering other timelines, Dazai loves Odasaku as his best friend (supposedly) even though they have never even met each other in the BEAST universe. Dazai wants to give Odasaku the happy life that he can't get in any other timeline so badly that he manipulated the lives of everyone around him, separated the Akutagawa siblings and made Atsushi and Kyouka go through hell by following the commands of Port Mafia.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Dazai arranges events for sole purpose of creating a world in which Oda is not destined to die. In the end, while he succeeds in ensuring Oda's survival, he torments everyone around him and makes a timeline in which he can never enjoy his success as Oda does not know and even dislikes him. On top of this, Dazai will never read Oda's novel as he kills himself so no more than two people will know of the Book.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Because of his nullification ability, the reality-altering power of the Book doesn't affect Dazai in the same way as others and he has the memories of several timelines.
  • Suicide for Others' Happiness: Dazai does everything in his power to create a timeline where Odasaku lives and can write his novel. After entrusting Atsushi and Akutagawa to protect the Book so this timeline doesn't disappear, Dazai kills himself.
  • Walking Spoiler: His actions and motives give away major spoilers for both the BEAST and main timeline.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Dazai became the most feared Port Mafia boss ever and made Atsushi's life hell for the sake of creating a timeline in which his best friend Oda doesn't die tragically, even though Dazai and Oda are complete strangers in this timeline.

    Kyouka Izumi

Kyouka Izumi

Kyouka is still part of Port Mafia and has a close relationship with the "White Reaper" Atsushi.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite the major differences in the timeline, Kyouka still was recruited by Port Mafia, met Atsushi and is working with him, expect as members of Port Mafia instead of the Agency.
  • Love Martyr: Kyouka threw away her only chance to escape Port Mafia and endures working for such a shady organization for the sake of staying by Atsushi's side.
  • Morality Pet: "White Reaper" Atsushi shows his gentler side around Kyouka and he cares so much about her that he agrees to guide Akutagawa to Gin because Akutagawa threatened using Demon Snow to kill Kyouka.
  • Undying Loyalty: Kyouka stays in Port Mafia regardless of her own wishes because she won't ever abandon Atsushi.

    Gin Akutagawa

Gin Akutagawa

Akutagawa's younger sister. She works in the Port Mafia, but as Dazai's secretary rather than as a commander of Black Lizard. Her brother Akutagawa is trying to find her.
  • Living Macguffin: In the BEAST universe, Gin's role is to be the person Akutagawa is looking for and the reason he wants to kill Dazai.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Dazai only took Gin with him to Port Mafia and separated her from her brother years ago. Akutagawa's main objective is to find her.
  • Sexy Secretary: She definitely looks more attractive dressed as a secretary than she does as an assassin in the main series.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gin does this to Akutagawa when they finally reunite, accusing him of never having cared about her given how he abandoned her to take revenge for his comrades when they were kids and not thinking twice about trying to kill Atsushi who is his only lead towards finding her.

    Chuuya Nakahara

Chuuya Nakahara

An executive in the Port Mafia with a fiery temper, he wants to kill Dazai but is forced to protect him as the boss of the organization.
  • Avenging the Villain: At the end of the movie, Chuuya orders Atsushi and Kyouka to erase the Agency from existence to avenge Dazai's death, which Chuuya blames on the Agency.
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: For seven years, Chuuya hated every minute of working with Dazai and his biggest wish was to kill him one day. After Dazai kills himself without telling him anything, Chuuya goes insane and destroys everything on his path until he's captured by the military. He then orders Atsushi and Kyouka to avenge Dazai by eliminating the Agency, to "not let Port Mafia lose face".
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Lampshaded by Dazai, who admits he finds it amusing to watch Chuuya struggle between his wish to murder Dazai and his duty to protect him as the boss of the Port Mafia.
  • Hypocrite: He furiously reprimands Atsushi for accidentally not being quite polite enough in front of Dazai, even destroying the ground beneath the boy's feet for his supposed lack of respect. At the same time, Chuuya yells at Dazai and tries to prevent him from having a private meeting with Atsushi, only for Dazai to point out that Chuuya is blatantly disrespecting his authority and puts the other man in his place.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Exaggerated. Chuuya berates and threatens Astushi for accidentally disrespecting Dazai, while simultaneously screaming at the man. Justified since Chuuya hates Dazai and wants to kill him, but is forced to protect him as Dazai is his boss.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Chuuya still hates Dazai and is a Port Mafia executive despite numerous alterations to the timeline. The only real change seems to be that he dresses differently, except for still wearing his fedora.
  • Noodle Incident: Chuuya lists off reasons as to why Atsushi can't speak to Dazai alone, explaining he could be mind controlled or have been implanted with a bomb, which seems far-fetched until he mentions it's happened before.
  • Number Two: In this timeline, Chuuya's authority in Port Mafia is only second to the boss Dazai.
  • Older Than He Looks: The light novel notes that with his height, he'd be easy to mistake for a kid despite being the Port Mafia's second in command.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: In this universe, Chuuya is extremely protective of Dazai, not only because he's the boss Chuuya must defend, but also because he hates Dazai and wants to kill him himself. When Dazai goes ahead and commits suicide, Chuuya takes it very badly.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dazai delivers a mild one to Chuuya for having the audacity to try ordering him around.
Dazai: Allow? I'm not seeking your permission, Chuuya. You're an executive and I'm the boss. And in the mafia, my orders are absolute. We have to respect that hierarchy, right?
  • Unstoppable Rage: In The Stinger of the movie, it's revealed that Dazai's suicide caused Chuuya to go on a rampage and destroy three entire military units that tried to stop him. He was finally captured and imprisoned in a high-security government facility.
  • You Are in Command Now: After Dazai's suicide, Chuuya names himself the new boss of Port Mafia and uses his authority to order Atsushi and Kyouka to avenge Dazai by getting rid of the Agency.
