ニコライ・ゴーゴリ - 外套
Literary reference: He is named after Russian author Nikolai Gogol, and his ability is a reference to Gogol's short story The Overcoat.
A member of the terrorist group, Decay of the Angel. His Ability, The Overcoat, turns his cloak into a portal to a pocket dimension in which he can store and retrieve things.
  • Ambiguously Gay: His relationship with Fyodor is very telling of this. He refers to Fyodor as his “intimate friend” and states that the reason he wants to kill him is so he can be free of his feelings for him.
  • Animal Motifs: Is often associated with birds. His cloak makes the illusion of bird wings, and he's 'elevated' from reality as it were.
  • Ax-Crazy: He laughs hysterically as he murders people and causes explosions. It's also implied he's invoking it.
  • Cradle of Loneliness: A messed up example. After Fyodor is killed in a helicopter crash, Nikolai is left holding Fyodor's dismembered arm, as he realizes Fyodor's death didn't bring him any satisfaction.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: He has a cross-shaped pupil in his eye.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: His body gets cut in half by a saw as a result of the effects of the Decay of the Angel using the book to frame the ADA. Or so he made it look with his Ability.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: He can store all sorts of things in his cloak, including telephone poles, enough sand to bury someone alive, and explosions.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: His motive for joining the Angels of Decay is to become "free like a bird".
  • Large Ham: His signature. It may have been inspired on his namesake's works often combining the normal with the grotesque.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has a long braid of hair that often rests on his right shoulder.
  • Monster Clown: He is nicknamed "The Clown" due to his circus-themed getup.
  • Not Quite Dead: It really looked like he died when the power of the book altered reality and his body was cut in half by a saw. Several chapters later Gogol shows up to save Sigma and explains he used his Ability to make it look like he got cut in half.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: He pretends to be a psychotic killer when he's completely sane and does feel a sense of guilt from murder. His reasoning for this is that his victims will find it easier to accept being killed by a murderous monster instead of a human being.
  • Repulsive Ringmaster: He dresses like a circus ringmaster and is part of an infamous terrorist group.
  • Teleportation: His Ability allows him to use his cape as a portal to transport objects, people, limbs and himself from wherever he wants within 30 meters.
  • Victory Is Boring: His goal was to get Fyodor killed by setting him up in a death game against Dazai. He apparently succeeds, but can't rejoice in his victory as he ends up feeling empty and realizes that Fyodor was right when he said he wanted to kill him so he would lose himself.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has silvery hair, and is a violent terrorist who specializes in inflicting Cruel And Unusual Deaths onto his victims.

    Sigma

Manager Sigma

シグマ - ??????
The manager of a secret sky casino and also a member of the Decay of the Angel. His real name is unknown. Despite tons of millionaires gambling and losing their money in the casino, he loathes the thought of other people entering it. His Ability makes him able to share the piece of information/intel the other person wants the most with the intel he wants to know the most via touch.
  • Affably Evil: Considering he's a member of an international terrorist group, Sigma is shown to be very attentive and hospitable to the customers of his casino. He was pretty mellow until Teruko and Tachihara entered the casino and made a fuss after he didn't want to cooperate for obvious reasons, scattering the customers.
  • Anime Hair: He has portions of his hair that appear to be in loose spikes. Also, the color of his hair's left side is lilac and the right side is white.
  • Anti-Villain: He might be a terrorist, but it's really hard to not sympathize with him after learning his difficult past and knowing all he wants is to defend the only place he feels he belongs to.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Sigma wears a suit as a manager of the Sky Casino, and he is quite a badass when he fought Teruko with his own weapons and aided Dazai to pass every dangerous obstacle to escape from Meursault.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Implied to be the reason why he shares vital information with Atsushi right before falling to the ground.
  • Berserk Button:
    • The Hunting Dogs's reckless pursuing efforts that caused trouble at the casino made Sigma wanted to aggressively protect it by any means, even having his customers kill Teruko and Tachihara to earn the $1 million bounty.
    • Played for laughs during Nikolai's prison escape game in Meursault. After Dazai selected him as a tool to escape, his comical immaturity truly made Sigma pissed off, not to mention wasting valuable time.
  • Born as an Adult: Since he was literally written into existence with the power of the Book, he first manifested into the world with an adult body.
  • Born of Magic: Sigma doesn't just have any memories of the past; he never had one to begin with. He came into existence only three years prior to the series through the power of the Book.
  • Butt-Monkey: Sigma is a frequent victim of physical abuse. Chuuya even uses his gravity powers to drop him 15 times.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The first thing he remembers is waking up in the middle of the desert with no memories of who he is. He ended up being captured and enslaved by a group of human traffickers who forced him to assist them in crimes by exploiting his ability to steal crucial information. He managed to escape, but even then, he had nowhere to go. He eventually was found by Fyodor who offered him to join the Decay of the Angel. Sigma agreed to aid in their terrorism and in exchange, his casino was written into existence with the Book so that Sigma could finally have his place to belong.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Because he has no memories, no family and no friends, Sigma's greatest wish is a reason to live. The Decay of the Angel granted his wish by literally writing the casino into existence so Sigma could manage it. Sigma even states that his casino is his entire life and without it, he would die.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first thing he is seen doing is purposefully damaging a card so that a man who needed money to cure his daughter could win.
  • A Father to His Men: It's subtle, but the reason why he doesn't like people who aren't customers coming in, is because of the true nature of his casino and the customers getting in danger. Also, Sigma seems to know every single customer's ailments (remember that there are twenty thousand of them).
  • Frame-Up: Under Kamui, he's the one that rewrites reality so that the Agency becomes terrorists so the Decay can proceed with their plans with no obstacles in their way. According to Ango with his ability, Sigma was also responsible for stabbing Chief Taneda.
  • Freudian Excuse: He has no memories, no home and no family because he's a mere creation of the Book capable of Rewriting Reality. He joined the Decay of the Angel and is participating in their terrorism in exchange of being given a casino that he can call his home with the power of the Book.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has an attractive face and beautiful straight hair flowing down his back.
  • Loss of Identity: Due to his lack of memories from before three years ago, Sigma doesn't know who he is and feels like he belongs nowhere in the world. His condition for joining the Decay of the Angel was for them to use the power of the Book to give him his own casino so he could finally be someone.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: He uses his Ability to learn all of Fyodor's secrets. However, the amount of information that gets transferred to his brain at once is so overwhelming that he's knocked out instantly. Fyodor thinks Sigma might have suffered a brain damage from which he probably won't recover from.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Sigma is only the name he gave himself. He doesn't remember his real name and given that he was created from the pages of the Book, he probably never had one in the first place.
  • Only Sane by Comparison: While he is part of a dangerous terrorist group and has caused the deaths of many people, when put next to Dazai, Fyodor, and Gogol he looks like a well rounded, upstanding citizen.
  • Only Sane Man: He said this word-for-word when Dazai and Fyodor accepted Nikolai's challenge of escaping from prison. Dazai picks Sigma to be his 'tool' for the prison break. He is left shocked and appalled when Dazai proceeds to literally dance around with him, despite the time limit. He's also the only one to display any fear or concern to a vampire coming to Fyodor's aid and killing all the guards.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the Decay of the Angel. Unlike his fellow terrorists, Sigma is actually a decent man who just wants a place to belong and he doesn't have any criminal past, or any past at all since the Book created him from nothing. He just had the misfortune of getting easily manipulated because of his status as a human created from the Book. In addition, being used by people like Nikolai, Fyodor, and Dazai (although the latter eventually became his ally) is one of Sigma's pet peeves.
  • Tough Leader Façade: He acts like a competent and composed boss in front of his staff, even at times of crisis, giving the impression that he's the perfect casino manager. When left alone, however, Sigma admits to himself that he has no confidence in his skills as a casino manager because of his lack of natural talents and he's just desperate to protect the only place that belongs to him.
  • The Unfettered: There's nothing Sigma won't do to protect his casino.
  • Villainous Valour: You really feel like rooting for him during his fight against Teruko. Sigma doesn't have a combat-oriented ability and he knows he has little chances of beating a Hunting Dog. However, he wants to protect his casino, which he considers his home, no matter what he must risk.

    Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese), Cory Yee (English)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bram_stoker_bsd.png

The last member of the Decay of the Angel. A count from Northern Europe who was transformed into the vampiric being Dracula by his own Ability.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Aya nicknames him "Bra-chan" (or "Bram-Bram" in the English dub).
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He has a dark outfit and isn't actually a bad guy since he was exploited by Fukuchi for his vampiric ability essential for the Decay of the Angel's latest plan.
  • Forced into Evil: With the Holy Sword impaled vertically to his brain, Fukuchi forced Bram to turn the people of Yokohama into vampires against his will.
  • Lady and Knight: He calls himself Aya's knight and swears to protect her after seeing her bravery when she risks her life to pull the sword out of him and save everyone.
  • Lazy Bum: All he wants to do is sleep.
  • Losing Your Head: His current body is nothing but his head, neck, and shoulders, due to having the Holy Sword impaled on his chest, which stopped his regeneration ability until Aya pulled it out to regain his limbs.
  • Missing Reflection: He mentions his reflection doesn't show up in a mirror, due to being a vampire.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: He thinks Aya's music player on her smartphone is a mind-blowing invention, asking her if she's a goddess.
  • Mystical White Hair: He's a vampire with silver hair.
  • Odd Friendship: He ends up developing a strange friendship with the 10-year-old Aya after she steals him from his coffin. She ends up pulling the sword out of his body, allowing him to recover his full power and body. Bram swears loyalty to Aya for this.
  • Pointy Ears: He has distinctive triangular-shaped pointed ears similar to elven ears.
  • Power Limiter: The sword stabbed in his body has sealed most of his powers, such as his regeneration and ability to control the vampires he creates. All he has in this state are the typical weaknesses of a vampire. He recovers his powers after Aya manages to pull the sword out.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Bram has been alive since the times of The Crusades.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He's a vampire with red eyes. Combined with his pale skin and Mystical White Hair, this harks back at the strigoi, creatures upon the vampires were inspired.
  • Technically-Living Vampire: He has a unique Ability that mutated his cells and turned him into a vampire.
  • Trapped in Villainy: If he could choose, he would stay sleeping inside his coffin without bothering anyone. Kamui has left him no choice but to participate in his plans for global-scale terrorism, as he will turn Bram into ashes with the holy cross stabbed into his body if Bram tries to refuse.
  • Vampires Hate Garlic: As it's common for a vampire, he hates garlic.
  • Vampires Sleep in Coffins: He's kept asleep inside a coffin unless Kamui needs him to bite someone.
  • Weakened by the Light: He's weak to sunlight due to the side effects of his Ability turning him into a vampire.
