Zig

Zig is a hyena and the show's most reoccurring villain, albeit the Ineffectual Sympathetic variant. He's also Sharko's Arch-Enemy due to him repeatedly trying to eat his girlfriend Marina, though he can get along with him, especially when she's out of the picture.

A-C
- Accidental Hero: He unintentionally saves a young crab from a fall in "Beach Hero" and is a villainous example.
- Accidental Pervert: Kinda. While not lecherous himself, in "Let's Dance!" he hides in a bathroom stall in hopes Marina would enter it so he could eat her. However, a fish woman enters it instead... though it's unclear if he saw anything.
- Actually Not a Vampire: Invoked in "Dance of the Vampire"; Zig (with Bernie's help) convinces Marina and Sharko into thinking he's a vampire when he actually isn't one. They later discover the truth, though.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: An inverted example in "Bionic Zig"; when Zig gets turned into a robot, he remains as villainous as ever.
- All of the Other Reindeer: The number of animals who like Zig in Africa and on the island can be counted on one hand.
- All There in the Manual:
- While the description for "Goin' Home" reveals Zig is African, none of the episodes (including "Goin' Home" itself) mention it in-universe.
- His robot form in "Bionic Zig" isn't named in-cartoon; the name (Bionic Zig) is only stated in the episode's official description.
- Alpha Bastard: He gives some "Mix of Both" vibes in "Beach Hero"; he's manipulative, very popular, and a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who he generally hides the "Bitch" part while interacting with anyone who isn't Sharko.
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Kinda. He's a hyena, which aren't blue in Real Life. However, "Teen Rebels" shows he had some dark blue fur as a teenager. It might've been dyed, though.
- Amusing Injuries: Being this universe's Cosmic Plaything (and a character in a slapstick cartoon), Zig's the most frequent receipt of comedic injuries in the show.
- Angry Chef: He acts like one in "Zig Top Chef" towards Sharko as he's harsh and fairly angry towards him and his cooking.
- Animals Hate Him: Other animals on the island love attacking Zig.
- Annoying Laugh: Do the math; he's a hyena with an Un Evil Laugh.
- Antagonist Title: A downplayed one; Zig is the main villain of "Zig and Sharko".
- Anti-Hero: In some episodes, he's this, namely when he teams up with Sharko. Other times, he's a Villain Protagonist or Nominal Hero.
- Apathetic Student: An inversion when Zig enrolls in Marina's school in "Teacher's Pet"; he clearly cares about her class (albeit only because he wanted to use it as an opportunity to ingest her).
- Arch-Enemy: He normally serves as Sharko's nemesis.
- Art Attacker: He has Sword Fight-like battle with Sharko using a paint brush and an art palette in "Hats off to the Artist".
- Asshole Victim: Especially in "Beach Hero"; Zig gets humiliatingly exposed as a terrible hero and kicked off the beach (though the latter wasn't permanent). However, he also flat-out showed Bystander Syndromenote after manipulating numerous animals just to eat Marina.
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: A couple times he's fought Sharko after temporarily becoming HUGE.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Played for Laughs in "Dance of the Vampire" when Sharko delays Zig via throwing him mundane stuff (e.g. a puzzle).
- Badass Cape: Inverted in "Super Zig" as he sports a cape but it doesn't make him look bigger or scarier.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: Quite downplayed. Zig has shades of Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass and at least once or twice he's worn a suit.
- Bad Bedroom, Bad Life: A strange example. He's usually shown to be this universe's Cosmic Plaything and, in season 2, his bedroom (which is inside of an abandoned plane) seems to have moss growing inside it.
- Bad Boss: Has his moments, like in a season 1 episode when he gives Bernie a Dope Slap.
- Bad Liar: While he's normally a fine manipulator, there's a couple instances when he lies and it doesn't fool someone.
- He attempts lying in "Silly Sleight of Hand" to a magician he didn't know what happened to his hat and wand. However, he didn't seem to buy it. And, even if he did, it didn't last as a seagull told him about Zig using both of those items.
- He tries lying to Sharko in "Tourists" that he wasn't joining Marina's tour to eat her. It clearly didn't work.
- Bad Samaritan: Sometimes when Zig does something nice, he has ulterior motives behind it. In "A Birthday Party" for instance, Zig gives Marina a birthday present… but it was part of his Nice Guy facade. And to make her mad at Sharko (who Zig knows is incredibly suspicious of him) when he destroyed it. (Or at least just the latter.)
- Beard of Sorrow: He grows a stubble in "A Brother's Tiff" when he's left miserable due to his friendship with Bernie ending. Granted, none of this lasted.
- Becoming the Mask: A subverted variant in "Daddy Little Doggy", in which he feigns some dog-like characteristics like being on all fours. And when pretending to pull a Big Damn Heroes moment, he runs on all fours with his tongue out while Sharko (who he was pretending to be a dog by) wasn't nearby. He drops the act fairly soon, though.
- Beyond Redemption: An implied variant. After Zig steals a unicorn's magical horn, Sharko (who's a total fanboy of her) is fuming upon learning about it and considers it "an unspeakable crime".
- Big Guy, Little Guy: When he and Sharko are paired up, he's the "Little Guy" to his "Big Guy" as he's clearly smaller than him.
- Big "YES!": Non-verbal equivalent during several instances in which he think he's got a shot at eating Marina (which he's obssessed with doing); while he doesn't say coherent words, he isn't quiet about how happy he is either...
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He can act like a Nice Guy, especially around Marina (ex. "Birthday Party"). But, of course, he's gonna eat her.
- Book Dumb: Implied in "Teacher's Pet" when he couldn't solve one simple addition problem. Granted, it could've just been a joke.
- Born Unlucky: It's rare at best when something goes Zig's way.
- Braces of Orthodontic Overkill: He ends up wearing one large and ugly pair of braces in "A Sweet Tooth", due to Sharko.
- Brainy Brunette: A male, downplayed variant of sorts; he's a Ditzy Genius with brown fur.
- Bullying a Dragon: He's physically weak and often gloats to Sharko, a Lightning Bruiser with Super-Strength. He almost always gets pummeled for it. And there are times Zig makes the stupid mistake of messing with things that are even bigger and meaner than Sharko...
- Bully Magnet: How much abuse Zig endures from others is immense.
- Bungling Inventor: In contrast with Bernie, Zig's inventions often go haywire or blow up in his face.
- But Not Too Foreign: An implied type III. The wording of the official description for "Goin' Home" implies Zig was born in Africa (which he returns to for some of the episode, not that it lasted). Nevertheless, post-season 1 episodes show he was instead raised in an island which isn't part of that continent.
- Bystander Syndrome: A justified example, at least sorta. When a fisherman in "Beach Hero" captures many innocent animals, Zig doesn't even try to do anything about it. Granted, being physically weak, he is helpless against a fairly big ship.
- Canine Companion: He sometimes acts like this in "Daddy Little Doggy" via pretending to be a friendly dog.
- Cannot Talk to Women: An inverted example. He's fairly good with women, as shown when he charms a lady into falling for him in "Loony Cruise". And, if his plan requires it, he can put up a solid Nice Guy facade around female animals (including Marina, if one counts a mermaid as an animal).
- Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Whenever he does something wrong, expect something bad (and usually hilariously painful) to happen to him.
- Characterization Marches On:
- After season one, he stops trying to eat Bernie whenever his hunger gets too bad.
- His Season 1 self relied less on Bernie and many episodes had him going off on his own to try eat Marina. Afterwards, he works a lot more together with Bernie, although in return he's become much clumsier when it comes to formulating plans.
- The Charmer: Has his moments. In "Birthday Party" for instance, he manages an impressive birthday party and acts charming towards Marina. Then "Loony Cruise" shows us that, with a tuxedo, he can make a woman fall for him.
- Chatty Hairdresser: An inversion. He acts as Marina's hairdresser in "Hair Do Hair Don't", but he doesn't act talkative.
- Cheaters Never Prosper: After he's exposed for cheating in Marina's class in "Teacher's Pet", she flat-out expels him.
- Cheery Pink: Played straight when he regresses into a Cheerful Child in "Lightning Love". Also, his eyes are pink.
- The Chew Toy: The biggest one in the show! Things tend to go horribly wrong for Zig, especially (but not exclusively) whenever he tries to eat Marina. Sometimes even when he isn't trying anything fishy, Sharko will occasionally lash out on Zig for no (apparent) reason, just to be safe or just 'cuz (like in "Beach Hero" and "The Clairvoyant"). And much of it is Played for Laughs!
- Childish Tooth Gap: A few episodes show Zig had gaps between his teeth when he was a child. He also regains said gaps in "Lightning Love" after regressing into an infant.
- The Clan: In "Desert Island Drought", he is shown to be from a large family of very successful hunters.
- Clashing Cousins: Played straight in "A Relative Problem", as Zig and his cousins start fighting when they start trying to eat Marina (which he REALLY wants to do). Averted in the original version as they're his nieces.
- Combo Platter Powers: A villainous example as Bionic Zig in the episode of the same name; he's got Eye Beams, incredible durability, can breathe fire or ice, Super-Strength, hearing, and speed.
- Combat Pragmatist: Justified, at least partially. While he's not above getting sneaky during engagements with Sharko, but he's also physically weak while Sharko is a Lightning Bruiser with Super-Strength.
- Complexity Addiction: What does one of his plans in in "A Sweet Tooth" was that he made it overly complex (and that he experienced some bad luck). In it, Marina would stand on a catapultish-platform-thingy and grab a piece of candy there which she'd eat. Then, she'd get launched on a big piece of butter and be placed on a giant frying pan. Which was being heated by a dragon breathing fire where she'd get cooked and bounced. Then it would land her on a saucer and with a crane subsequently placing a cherry on her.
- Cosmic Plaything: Ohhh boy. Outside of the rare bones, this universe hates Zig. It generally yanks his chain, has him experience Can't Get Away with Nuthin', and makes hardly anything go right for him (including via making most of the series a huge Humiliation Conga with his name on it). He also oftentimes goes hungry and clearly gets the most abuse in the show, much is due to Sharko who's a Lightning Bruiser with Super-Strength. This is especially apparent in Season 1, where the other animals usually treat him like a punching bag at worst or a joke at best.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He shows hints of it. It's especially in "Desert Island Drought" when he manages to defeat Sharko.
D-F
- Dark Is Evil: He's got a dark brown mane, a black Gag Nose, and he's usually shown to be villainous.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Played With as he's sometimes an Anti-Hero. However, he still has a black Gag Nose and a dark brown mane.
- Defrosting Ice King: This happened to Zig earlier in his relationship with Bernie, as revealed in "Bosom Buddies". He's originally aloof towards him (even once blowing him a strawberry), seems to find him annoying, and clearly dislikes his company. However, Zig starts warming up to Bernie once he helps him when a tiger was chasing him.
- Demoted to Extra: He's the main villain of the original series, but takes the backseat to Bernie in the After Show.
- Determinator: He won't stop at ANYTHING to accomplish his goals, especially eating Marina.
- Dirty Coward: His response in "Father in Law" when Poseidon and Sharko arrive to rescue Marina from him and Bernie? He tries blaming Bernie for everything!
- Ditzy Genius: His schemes can be clever and he's a fine Manipulative Bastard. His Did Not Think This Through moments, however, not so much.
- Does Not Know His Own Strength: A justified one. In "Bionic Zig", to his surprise, he accidentally crushes half a coconut due to his Super-Strength. However, he didn't know beforehand that he gained that power. Also, he's naturally physically weak.
- Draco in Leather Pants: He experiences this In-Universe; despite his villainy, multiple animals in "Beach Hero" think he's an Ideal Hero! He also exploits this to convince them Sharko is a scumbag.
- The Dreaded: A downplayed example in season one, as only some smaller animals fear him. This trait is basically non-existent afterwards, though.
- Dressed to Plunder: Invoked in "Bristlebeard's Adventure" when he wears a bandana-like hat and later an eyepatch when trying to become a pirate. He ditches the latter, though, but he also later is briefly forced to use a peg-leg.
- Eating Machine: Heavily implied in "Bionic Zig", the fairly smart Bernie transforms Zig into a robot to let him defeat Sharko and eat his girlfriend Marina. However, it's still never explicit if Zig kept his ability to eat after being transformed into a robot.
- Enemy Mine: Although he's usually portrayed as Sharko's Arch-Enemy, there are instances when he works with him to defeat some other baddie.
- Enmity with an Object: If him giving a lighthouse an Angry Fist-Shake and trying to destroy it in "Lighthouse" says anything.
- Extendable Arms: When he's Bionic Zig, he can greatly extend at least one of his arms. Otherwise,...
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: The second season reveals he clearly loves his adoptive mother. Him finding her headband in "Bosom Buddies" even pushes his Kindness Button.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
- His most reoccurring good quality is that he cares about Bernie. For example, in "Bodyguard" he easily could have left him to get beaten by an angry mob. Instead, he rescues him and risks getting pummeled in the process.
- He shows this in spades in "A Relative Problem" when his cousins (nieces in the original version) visit him; he's ecstatic about their visit, hugs them when they arrive, and made them their own beds. Later, however...
- An odd one in "Zig's Shadow", but he does get along well with his Living Shadow. He even starts crying after Sharko defeats him.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being less-than-fettered, Zig does have some standards.
- A blink-and-you-miss-it example in "Save the Hyena!", but he actually looks horrified when he thinks a young monkey drowned.
- He's clearly disgusted with the pilot in "What A Day!" when he tries to eat Bernie.
- Subverted a couple times in "Beach Hero". Initially, he seems disgusted with Sharko ruining or disposing of multiple animal's ice cream. However, he ends up flashing him a Psychotic Smirk, indicating he intended for that to happen.note Later, when he realizes a fisherman was capturing numerous animals, he initially appears horrified. But then, he starts showing Bystander Syndrome.
- A subversion in "The Conquistador". He initially looks disgusted when a conquistador points his sword at Sharko. And then… he just grabs some ketchup to eat Marina with.
- Even Zig is scared of Hades in "A Hell of a Friend".
- Even the Guys Want Him: Justified. Even male animals (including his Arch-Enemy Sharko) become his Abhorrent Admirers in "The Scent of The Hyena" after smelling his Love Potion-like deodorant.
- Evil Is Bigger: Zigzagged. While he's no saint, Zig is smaller than Sharko and Marina. However, he sometimes manages to temporarily make himself bigger than them. For example, due to using a Shrink Ray on them in "Tinky Toys", he towers over them during much of the episode.
- Evil Is Burning Hot: Particularly in "Bionic Zig" when he gains the ability to breathe fire, as Sharko learned the hard way.
- Evil Is Deathly Cold: One of his powers as Bionic Zig is breathing ice. There's also a reason why many other villainous Tropes apply to him.
- Evil Makes You Monstrous: He usually a villain, sure. But in "Were-Hyena" he transforms into that several times, and it isn't pretty.
- Evil Makes You Ugly: A downplayed yet Played With example. As a cub, he looked cuter than he does as an adult or teenager, which was before he started trying to eat Marina. While he started trying to devour her during cubhood, he kept his cute appearance until he hit puberty. In adulthood, which is when he commits villainous acts the most, he looks better than he did when he was a teenager. However, he's not as a cute as he originally was.
- Evil Old Folks: He still tries to eat Marina in "The Cloud" after getting turned into an elder.
- Evil Only Has to Win Once: Played With yet subverted. You would think that, if Zig were to succeed in eating Marina once, there'd be no way of reversing it (without something Time Travel-involved). However, a few season 3 episodes have her come out of his stomach after he eats her (mainly due to Sharko). Granted, his plans to devour her were doomed from the beginning.
- Evil Uncle: The original "A Relative Problem" reveals Zig is an uncle.
- Evil Vegetarian: Completely inverted in "Veggiezig [sic]"; while effected by Sharko's hypnotism, Zig becomes a vegetarian and drops his villainy.
- Evil Versus Evil: A couple episodes put him up against Hades.
- Evil Wears Black: During some plans to eat Marina, he wears black. And getting his paws dirty is his speciality.
- Exposed Animal Bellybutton: Played straight in season 1 as he's a hyena with a visible, rather human-like belly button. Averted in season 2 onwards, however; while he's still a hyena, he no longer has a visible bellybutton.
- Expy: He has multiple similarities to Wile E. Coyote. Both are scheming anthropomorphic predators (albeit of different speciesnote ) who get tons of Amusing Injuries, are obsessed with eating a major characternote , etc.
- Eye Beams: When he's Bionic Zig, one of his powers is shooting lasers from his peepers.
- Eyepatch of Power: An inverted variant in "Bristlebeard's Adventure", in which he wears a black eye patch. However, it's not intended to make him look cooler and he's naturally a poor fighter.
- False Friend: He's not above pretending to be Marina's friend. Inverted in much of "Veggiezig [sic]" however, in which he genuinely wants to be friends with her.
- Faux Affably Evil: Non-verbal equivalent in "The Mime" when he shows Condescending Compassion to Sharko.
- Feel No Pain: He doesn't seem to feel any pain as Bionic Zig; he doesn't even react to being attacked by Sharko (who has a Super-Strength), getting run over, etc. Subverted as he clearly feels pain when water enters him.
- First Friend: He's an implied Type I example in "Bosom Buddies"; it implies Zig was Bernie's first ever friend because there's no indication he had any friends prior to Zig.
- Fish Bowl Helmet: Played for Laughs, sorta; a few times Zig (who's a hyena) manages to breathe underwater via wearing a fish bowl on his head. However, they don't fit him due to his Gag Nose.
- Flanderization: In season one, Zig could mock Sharko whenever he thought he gained an advantage over him. Episodes afterwards, however, have him ridicule him almost everytime he believes he's gotten the upper hand over him.
- Fluffy Dry Cat: He's a fairly short-haired hyena. But, "Daddy Little Doggy" shows us his fur really poofs up if you blow-dry him.
- Foil: He serves as one to the titular Sharko. Zig is physically weak, generally disliked (especially, but not only, in season one), and has no interest in Marina besides eating her. Sharko however has Super-Strength, is often well-liked, and is clearly smitten with Marina.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He sports a pair of glasses in "Zig Airlines", surprisingly during a scheme.
- Friendly Enemy: Yes, really. At least if Marina is out of the picture, there are fair chances that you'll actually see him getting along with Sharko.
- Fur Is Clothing: His fur sometimes acts like clothing.
G-J
- Gag Haircut: He looks outright ridiculous after Marina tries giving him a haircut in "Daddy Little Doggy".
- Gag Lips: He briefly gets a pair of silly-looking, fairly big lips in "Hats off to the Artist".
- Gag Nose: Played With. Yes, you can thank this hyena's snout for several of the show's jokes. And, besides Sharko, he has the biggest nose in the main cast. However, his nose appears average-sized for hyenas in this universe (as shown in "Goin' Home" and by extension "Desert Island Drought").
- General Failure: Downplayed yet subverted in "Cloning Blues". Zig is a Ditzy Genius (with the foremost part mainly due to his Did Not Think This Through moments), The Unfettered, mean-spirited, failure-prone, and acts like the general of an army of Zig-like robots...expect it's soon shown they don't even listen to him!
- Giggling Villain: He can let out some giggles when in the devious mood, especially (but not exclusively) in season one.
- Go-Karting with Bowser: Despite him and Sharko clearly being Arch-Enemies, they have a couple moments of participating in activities together. They play pinball in "Mermaid Fritter", for instance.
- Good Hair, Evil Hair: He briefly has a messy mane in "A Brother's Tiff" and he's often shown to be villainous.
- Goofy Print Underwear: In "Hair Story", Sharko imagines a shaved Zig wearing a pair of white undies with red hearts (It Makes Sense in Context).
- Go Mad from the Isolation: He starts losing it after he's left alone in "A Brother's Tiff" due to his friendship temporarily ending with Bernie. However, he does get better.
- Handy Feet: Type I in "Rockstar Marina" when he plays a keyboard well with his feet. It's slightly downplayed though, especially when considering that he did this while standing up.
- Happiness in Mind Control: Implied in "Veggiezig [sic]"; after Sharko hypnotises him into being obssessed with eating veggies and not Marina, Zig is perhaps at his happiest. However, none of this lasted, due to Sharko.
- Harmful to Minors: Voring Marina in front of kids? Not an issue with him!
- Harmless Villain: He may almost always try to ingest Marina, but he's pretty weak and always fails at doing so. And even if he does succeed, it won't stick.
- Hated by All: A downplayed case. Aside from a few charactersnote , nobody consistently likes Zig.
- Hates Baths: A justified yet possibly Played for Laughs example in "Daddy Little Doggy"; Zig starts having a Villainous Breakdown when Sharko unknowingly interrupts his Evil Plan via forcing him to bathe.
- Hat of Authority: Subverted in "Cloning Blues". Zig sports a hat while talking to his clones (which none of them wear) and seems like he has control over them...but it's soon shown he doesn't.
- Heinous Hyena: He's a hyena and a textbook Super-Persistent Predator.
- Heroic Dog: He acts like a heroic canine in "Daddy Little Doggy" when pretending to pull a Big Damn Hero moment.
- Hero with Bad Publicity: Zigzagged. Zig's reputation is usually garbage (most notably in season one) and he sometimes serves as an Anti-Hero when he isn't being a scoundrel.
- Hidden Depths: He's shown to be (usually) a good cook (e.g. "Zig Top Chef" and "The Mermaid's Feast") and a surprisingly decent business manager ("Sharko and Zig on the Rocks")..
- His Own Worst Enemy: He's prone to self-destructive behavior. He could've succeeded with eating Marina (which he really wants to do) if he didn't waste time via using different methods to eat her (like making a sandwich with her in it) and learnt from his mistakes. And if he restrained himself from mocking Sharko (a Lightning Bruiser and his Arch-Enemy who usually prevents him from eating Marina). Him not always thinking his actions through also doesn't help. However, he'd overall suffer less misfortunes if he weren't so stubborn and obsessive with devouring Marina and just gave up with it. Not only would it mean he's less of a punching bag to Sharko, but targeting smaller prey would possibly prevent him from going hungry like he typically doe. Granted, he can be unlucky with that too.
- Humiliation Conga: Most of the show's episodes are this for Zig. Special mention goes to "Daddy Little Doggy", which has him going through it for the entire episode.
- The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: He spends most of the series trying to eat Marina, but it one season 3 episode, she tries to eat him.
- The Hyena: He always lets out a good laugh. Bonus points since he's a hyena himself.
- Hypno Fool: Played With yet ultimately subverted in "Veggiezig [sic]". After being hypnotized by Sharko, Zig seemingly tries to eat Marina in front of him, which is something he's attempted to do without being hypnotized. However, it's soon revealed he was only pulling some food out her teeth.
- An Ice Person: He can breathe ice as Bionic Zig.
- Icy Blue Eyes: A subverted example. While Bernie was turning Zig into Bionic Zig, a depiction of him on his computer suggests he was going to giving him blue-ish grey eyes, which would fit given his calculating and mean-spirited nature (and the fact that, as Bionic Zig, he can breathe ice). However, it's soon revealed that Bernie kept his eyes pink.
- I Just Want to Be You: An implied case in "Me, Myself[,] and I" as Zig becomes happy when he realizes he swapped bodies with Sharko. And this was before he realized this could give him an opportunity to eat Marina (Sharko's girlfriend who Zig is obssessed with devouring).
- Informed Species: You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who can recognize Zig as a hyena without reading a source revealing he's that.
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: His attempts at eating Marina are all for naught and he almost never catches a break.
- Innocent Blue Eyes:
- Implied but ultimately subverted. "Lightning Love" suggests Zig had blue eyes during cubhood and he Used to Be a Sweet Kid. It's subverted in "Teen Rebels" (namely a photo from that episode), which reveals he wasn't blue-eyed at that age. However, it's later revealed he didn't have blue eyes at that age.
- Invoked in "Daddy Cool" in which he wears blue eye contacts when pretending to be an innocent little baby during (yet another) scheme.
- Irony: It's revealed in "Desert Island Drought" that at least several of Zig's relatives are successful hunters. Zig himself, however...
- Insane Troll Logic: Played for Laughs in "A Brother's Tiff" in which he apparently thinks Sharko would be completely defeated if he had him slip on a banana peel once. Later, he also thought throwing one banana at a Tentacled Terror would defeat her.
- Instant Expert: He quickly becomes an expert in swimming with a mermaid tail instead of legs in "Fancy Footwork".
- Intelligence Equals Isolation: A downplayed example. He's a Ditzy Genius and few characters consistently like him.
- It's All About Me: He has his moments. It's especially in "Beach Hero" when he manipulates numerous animals just to eat Marina. Oh, he also flat-out shows Bystander Syndrome (even if there's at least some In-Universe justification behind the latter).
- Jaded Washout: Part of what makes him an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain; he's a Loser Protagonist (when an episode centers on him), a textbook Cosmic Plaything, and he does little with his life other than trying and failing to eat Marina.
- Jerkass to One: Although he is mean-spirited, it's much more noticeable around Sharko than any other character. Therefore, he's a "Crueler to One" example. Justified as, rather it's provoked or not, it'd be hard not to have some hostility towards someone who frequently attacks you (which Sharko is guilty of).
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Although it's clear he has good qualities, he still has some moments of this.
- He subverts having several Even Evil Has Standards moments in "Beach Hero".
- In "The Conquistador", when he realizes that a conquistador was about to finish Sharko, it initially seemed like he was going to rescue him, But was actually was just grabbing some ketchup to eat Marina with.
- Subverted a couple times in regards to Bernie; him caring about the hermit crab is his most consistent redeeming quality. In "Beach Hero", he intially appeared to have quit caring about Bernie after becoming a Villain with Good Publicity as he was seemingly ignoring him. Nevertheless, it's later revealed he still did care about him. It's even implied that he didn't intend to come off as if he was ignoring him. Also, in "A Beautiful Shell", he's given the choice to devour Marina OR try to save Bernie from getting swallowed by a Tentacled Terror. He chooses the former via putting the mermaid in his mouth. However, it's soon revealed he only did so to team up with her and fire her as a torpedo to rescue him.
K-O
- Karmic Butt-Monkey: He nearly constantly experiences Can't Get Away with Nuthin' (especially from his very frequent attempts to eat sweet Marina), which frequently results in Amusing Injuries by Sharko and others.
- Kill It with Water: Downplayed. When water enters Bionic Zig (who's otherwise indestructible), it's not fatal. But, it hurts and De-Powers him.
- Kindness Button: He once was smack-dab in a plot to kidnap and then eat Marina... but drops it and enters Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas mode after finding his adoptive mother's headband.
- Large and in Charge: A downplayed variant as he's larger than Bernie due to being from a larger species.
- Leg Focus: He gets a long, well-toned pair of legs when Sharko turns him into… some-ballerina-thingy. And his outfit puts emphasis on 'em.
- LEGO Genetics: A couple times, he has switched body parts with Sharko. Hilarity Ensues.
- Lightning Bruiser: He's got Super-Strength, speed, and durability as Bionic Zig.
- Loners Are Freaks: Downplayed; while Zig is a villain, he has no friends sans Bernie. It briefly gets played straight a couple times though, namely in the handful of episodes in which his friendship with Bernie temporarily ends (e.g. "Bernie Moves House").
- Loser Protagonist: Zigzagged. He can be the protagonist but he's almost always shown to be a Cosmic Plaything.
- Madness Makeover: Downplayed in "A Brother's Tiff" when he looks slightly scruffier when he starts flipping out. Though this was all temporary.
- Making a Splash: When he's using Poseidon's trident, Zig can control water.
- Manchild: In "Lightning Love", after getting struck with lightning, he constantly acts like a baby. Not that this lasts. Also, he's otherwise a Psychopathic Manchild (the villainous example of this trope).
- Maniac Tongue: Downplayed but Zig has a few moments of sticking out his tongue, and not to blow raspberries (though he sometimes does that).
- Man in a Bikini: A Played for Laughs example in "Lost in the Jungle", which has him unintentionally get in a pink and white bikini.
- Manipulative Bastard: While not as manipulative as some examples, he sometimes manipulates some characters (e.g. pulling a Wounded Gazelle Gambit in "Viking Love").
- Man on Fire: It's easy to engulf him in flames, as shown in a couple episodes (e.g. "End of the World").
- Master Actor: Tricked multiple animals into thinking he's an Ideal Hero in "Beach Hero" (although a bit of the work was already done for him due to an Accidental Hero moment), never mind his The Charmer and other Manipulative Bastard moments.
- Mcninja: He's African (as revealed in "Goin' Home", or at least its official description) and there's no evidence he's Japanese. Also, he's occasionally gone as a Ninja (especially in most of "The Horribly Hungry Hyena").
- Meaningless Villain Victory: There are a few times in season 3 when Zig technically succeeds with eating Marina (which he's shown to want to do)...but she someway exits him (which is particularly due to Sharko).
- Meaningful Name: Maybe unintentional, but Zig's name fits in a sense. It could be a reference to the phrase "to zig when one should zag", which means to err. Additionally, he's His Own Worst Enemy. Oh, and he zigzags several tropes.
- Memetic Loser: In-Universe. The island's other animals (especially in season 1) consider Zig a huge joke.
- Mind-Control Eyes: Kinda. While being hypnotized by Sharko in "Veggiezig [sic]", his peepers look off.
- Mirthless Laughter: Downplayed Type V; he sometimes giggles nervously when Poseidon and/or Sharko are going to attack him, especially in season 3.
- Muscle Angst: Type I.
- It's implied in "The Coach" that Zig is unhappy with being physically weak; he seems to admire a muscly jaguar for being a physical threat and goes through his training to try to become just that. Considering he's been pummeled by animals stronger than him (most notably Sharko), it's easy to see why he'd feel this way.
- Played straight in "The Were-Hyena", as he flat-out becomes sad about the fact he isn't muscular.
- Muscles Are Meaningless: Averted usually as he's clearly less muscular than Sharko, who he simply can't beat in a fair fight. Played straight, however, as Bionic Zig. While he's still obviously less muscly than Sharko, it's obvious the shark is no match for him.
- Navel Window: Played With. His outfit in season 2's "It's Magic" ends up revealing a bit of his stomach. However, it's not played as fanservice nor does he have an Exposed Animal Bellybuttonnote . All of this makes sense in context.
- Near-Villain Victory: Many instances have Zig get close to eating Marina, but something happens (most frequently Sharko pulling a Big Damn Hero moment) that ruins it.
- Never My Fault: After Poseidon and Sharko both arrive to foil his and Bernie's plot in "Father in Law", Zig tries pin the blame on Bernie.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: As Bionic Zig, he doesn't appear to feel pain and is indestructible… until water enters him.
- Noble Demon: Yeah, he's usually shown to be villainous. However, he does have loved ones (including his adoptive mother), show kindness from time to time, and some standards. He can also be a good team player. And, the rare occasion where Marina isn't around, he (more or less) gets along with Sharko rather well.
- Nominal Hero: He's this in some episodes, namely when he's up against another enemy who's after Marina. In other episodes, he's a Villain Protagonist, though.
- No Off Button: Inverted when he's Bionic Zig, who's a robot with a power button.
- No-Sell: As shown during his "fight" with Sharko, Bionic Zig isn't effected by any attacks. He takes being assaulted multiple times by Sharko, including an Enhanced Punch to the face. And him throwing a piano being thrown on him, running him over several times, squashing him several more times with a helicopter, and dropping a rocket on him. Nevertheless, Bionic Zig clearly wasn't hurt or even effected by any of it. When water enters him, however...
- Nose Nuggets: A gag from "The Elevator Trip" suggests Zig likes picking his nose.
- Obligatory Earpiece Touch: He sports an earpiece in much of "Bodyguard" which he can also use to communicate with somebody (prolly Bernie).
- Obsessed with Food:
- He is obsessed with eating Marina. "Self-Defense Academy" shows his obsession is about mermaid meat, though.
- Justified in "Veggiezig [sic]"; throughout much of the episode, he's obsessed with veggies after Sharko hypnotises him into doing such.
- An Odd Place to Sleep: Kinda. While Played for Laughs in "The End of the World", Zig sleeps in a box crammed enough to give him an Amusing Injury. While sucking his thumb. Also, the fact he was sleeping like a baby there may indicate he's done this before.
- "Oh, Crap!" Smile: His default expression, especially in season 3, whenever Sharko (and/or Poseidon) are about to attack him. Though he's made this in season one, too◊.
- Older Than He Looks: A brief, yet downplayed and Played for Laughs example; he temporarily looks a lot like a baby in "Toys Attack!" despite being an adult. However, his face doesn't look like a baby's.
- One-Track-Minded Hunger: He's usually famished, doesn't care about what he has to do to eat Marina (which he's determined and obsessed with doing), and is a villainous example.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Especially post-Flanderization, Zig loves gloating to Sharko whenever he thinks he's gained an advantage over him. However, in "Daddy Cool" when he starts escaping him, Zig doesn't indulge in mocking him like usual. Instead, he remains terrified throughout much of the chase. This is because he unintentionally broke Sharko's heart which made him even angrier at him than usual. However, he does start laughing at him once he gets held back in the chase due to having to step on some legos.
- Open the Iris: Whenever his hunger gets really bad. It is usually followed by an Oh, Crap! expression from Bernie.
- Overly-Long Tongue: At least a couple instances show he has an unnaturally long tongue. Also, in "The Serenade", it was long enough to reach way past his feet.
P-T
- Pale Females, Dark Males:
- His fur is darker than the unnamed female hyena he interacts with in "Goin' Home".
- A photo he has of him and his nieces (or cousins) in "A Relative Problem" portray him as having darker fur. However, when they arrive, their fur is shown to be the same color as his.
- Paper Tiger: Played for Laughs in "LOL Zig", in which he gets extremely beefy and threatening-looking suddenly. But when he approaches Sharko to defeat him, the shark deflates him like a balloon via poking him his ice cream cone.
- Perpetual Smiler: While he's turned into…some ballerina thingy, his default expression is a smile.
- Pet the Dog: He has moments when he displays a heart beneath his sneakiness. For instance, before escaping from a whale in "Moby Zig", Zig offers a Pinocchio-like character to leave with him. He also congratulates the pilot for saving a ship in "The Boating License".
- A Pirate 400 Years Too Late: This show seems to take place in the 2010s-2020s, which doesn't stop Zig from becoming a pirate in "Bristlebeard's Adventure".
- Playing with Fire: As Bionic Zig, he can breathe fire. And he briefly gets this ability in "The Master of the Volcano".
- Pragmatic Villainy:
- Downplayed; he deliberately waits to try to eat Marina during a couple of his plans instead of just flat-out trying to eat her as quickly as possible.
- Some episodes have him rescue Marina, which is basically only because he wants to eat her himself.
- Prefers Rocks to Pillows: Despite being given the option to sleep in a hut in "Goin' Home", Zig instead chooses to sleep by (or in) a tree. Until some bugs have a field day with him, that is.
- Prodigal Hero: Inverted in "Goin' Home", in which he moves to Africa to try to gain power. But he later returns back to the island and then continues his villainy.
- Protagonist Title: Downplayed yet zigzagged in the original series. Zig can be a Villain Protagonist and his name is in the title, but so is Sharko's.
- Psychopathic Manchild: While often more mature than Marina and can hide it well when going Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, Zig often acts like a Bratty Half-Pint stuck in an adult's body. Not only does a gag from "The Elevator Trip" imply he still picks his nose, he ofthen throw fits when stuff doesn't go his way. Special note goes to "Banana Peel" when he starts crying because he can't eat Marina. And when Bernie tries calming him via offering him a nearby banana, he rejects it and throws a fit about how he only wants to eat the mermaid. He also has a tendency to be childishly petty towards Sharko (e.g. blowing strawberries at him and occasionally mocking him via making him faces). It's most notable, though, in "Bionic Zig" when his treatment of him is like a youngster dismantling their toy.
- Psychotic Smirk: Zig often sports these when he's plotting something.
- Pubescent Braces: As a teen, Zig wore braces.
- Purple Is Powerful: Inverted. A couple times Zig has worn purple, but he's weak physically.
- Quivering Eyes:
- His eyes start quivering after he cries in "Mermaid Fritter".
- "The End of the World" ends with his eyes quivering like he was about to cry.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: He's shown to be a villain and his pink eyes have shades of red. Subverted on the "dangerous" part as it's soon made clear he's a Harmless Villain.
- Rocket Punch: He has this ability as a Humongous Mecha-like thingy in "Robot Craze" as he can shoot part of his arms (including his fists) out like missiles.
- Sanity Slippage: He flips out in "Hide and Squeak" after Marina (who he's obsessed with eating) seemingly goes missing. It doesn't last, however.
- The Scrappy: An In-Universe variant; Zig is widely hated and laughed at, especially (but not just) in season one.
- Screaming Warrior: A comedic example, but being a headphones user during a couple of his fights with Sharko isn't recommended...
- Screams Like a Little Girl: Some episodes (e.g. "The Nap") reveal his voice when he's screaming is even more high-pitched than his typical voice.
- Seadog Peg Leg: Played With in "Bristlebeard's Adventure". While trying to become a pirate, he briefly has to wear a peg leg. In actuality, both his legs are A-OK so he technically didn't need it.
- Shared Family Quirks: His nieces (or cousins, depending on the version) want to eat Marina as much as he does, as shown in "A Relative Problem".
- Signature Laugh: Take a swig whenever he lets the same laugh rip.
- Silent Antagonist:
- Subverted when he's first introduced in "Fishy Story". He doesn't make any noises initially, sans his Growling Gut and him licking his lips before trying to eat Marina. But he soon blows a raspberry at Sharko and starts laughing at him.
- Invoked by him in "The Mime", in which he refrains from making noises during much of a mime show involving him and Sharko.
- Sinister Schnoz: He's a villain and he has a big nose.
- Sinister Shades: Zigzagged; he's an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain who occasionally sports shades.
- Sissy Villain: He has his moments. Not only does he sometimes wear feminine colors, he also occasionally goes Disguised in Drag, not that he seems to mind.
- Slasher Smile: Sometimes makes big, evil-looking smiles instead of Psychotic Smirks.
- The Speechless: While Sharko and Marina are Speaking Simlish, Zig usually makes groans, eeps, or cackles.
- Spoiled Brat: A Rare Male Example but he acts the part, at least in "Banana peel [sic]" when he throws a childish tantrum because he can't eat Marina (though it's Played for Laughs).
- Still Sucks Thumb: At least in "The Coach" and "End of the World" when he sucks his thumb, though both instances are Played for Laughs.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Tertiary Sexual Characteristics side, Zig and his nieces (or cousins) from "A Relative Problem" look similar, with Sharko even apparently comparing their looks to Zig's. The second episode also shows he looks like (at least a few of) his relatives.
- Strong Girl, Smart Guy: Downplayed, of sorts. Zig is a Ditzy Genius while Olga, who tries her damnest to be a couple with him, is extremely powerful.
- Super-Hearing: He has this power as Bionic Zig; he hears a bug listening to music on their headphones which Bernie (who has normal hearing) couldn't hear.
- Superheroes Wear Capes: Invoked; when he tries to become a superhero in "Super Zig", he makes a costume with a cape.
- Super-Persistent Predator: This hyena will almost always attempt to eat Marina, regardless of what would happen if he fails. Special note goes to "Fishing for Hyenas", where not even running through a swamp of violent piranhas, getting a porcupine stuck in his mouth, and a plant eating him was enough to stop him from pursuing Marina.
- Super-Speed: He's fast enough to run around the Earth in seconds as Bionic Zig.
- Supreme Chef: The episode "Zig Top Chef" isn't called that for nothing; it reveals the side dishes he makes, usually with intention of having Marina as the main ingredient, like soups, taste pretty nice.
- Sympathy for the Hero: It's rare, but he occasionally does this. In "King Neptune's Court" for instance, he pities Sharko after he gets heartbroken due to him thinking Marina loves King Neptune instead of him.
- A Taste Of His Own Medicine: At least several times he's gotten this. For example, Zig spends much of "Deafening Noise" using loud noises to torment Sharko due to his hearing becoming oversensitive (namely to render him unable to stop him devouring Marina). However, towards the end of it, Zig's hearing becomes oversensitive and some birds (likely unknowingly) torment him with it.
- Teacher's Pet: Acts like this when he was one of Marina's students in the episode of the same name; he (with Bernie's help) easily passes her class and pretends to be a Nice Guy to kiss up to her. Also, none of the other students like him, though he doesn't seem to care.
- Team Rocket Wins: Mostly due to Sharko's interference, Zig has lost hundreds of times. However, there are actually a handful of instances when he scores a victory. "Run Sharko, Run!" for instance has him win a marathon, though he doesn't seem to care.
- Technicolor Eyes: Zigzagged. His peepers are pink, which is an unnatural eye color for hyenas in Real Life. But sometimes they're black instead, which is a natural eye color for hyenas.
- Teens Are Monsters: It's shown in "Teen Rebels" that he wasn't above trying to eat Marina when he was a teenager. Also, when he briefly gets turned back into a teen in "The Cloud", he still attempts to devour her.
- Tennis Boss: A non-gaming example, sorta. During one of his fights with Sharko in season one, Zig pilots a Humongous Mecha and makes it give Sharko two Rocket Punches. However, Sharko then knocks it back at him, with fish shaped like tennis rackets.
- Terrible Artist: Played for Laughs in "A Brother's Tiff", in which he makes a shoddy drawing of a ridiculous excuse of an Evil Plan.
- Then Let Me Be Evil: Played straight in "Sharko and Zig on the Rocks". After opening a snack bar with Sharko, the shark spends much of it mistreating him unprovoked. No wonder Zig eventually left the business and returned to villainy.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Surprisingly, there are some instances in which something goes Zig's way. "Lost in the Jungle" for example, ends with him successfully stealing Sharko's wooden statue of Marina which he happily eats.
- Token Minority: He's the only African in the main cast, with his nationality being revealed in the official description for "Goin' Home".
- Top-Heavy Guy: He briefly (somehow) gains a ripped upper body with his legs remaining unmuscular◊ in "LOL Zig". It's a mystery how Sharko (who's also an example of that trope) wasn't impressed.
- Troll: He's not above messing with Sharko, like giving him a "Take That!" Kiss in "The Moo Can".
- Tsundere: A non-romantic, male example.
- A mild one with Bernie. Zig sometimes is cold to him, but it's clear he cares about him underneath that.
- A strange example in "Zig Top Chef" in which he's this to one of Sharko's dishes. While he loves it, he doesn't want Sharko to know that. Therefore, he acts like it tastes repulsive and throws it away.
- TV Head Robot: He dresses like one (i.e. a robot with a television-like head) in "Robot Craze".
U-Y
- Underwear of Power: He wears a visible pair of undies when trying to be a superhero in "Super Zig".
- Un Evil Laugh: He may be evil and The Hyena, but he generally can't pull off an Evil Laugh to save his life.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Has his moments. For instance, he shows nil gratitude to Sharko in "Little Train, Big Adventure" after he prevents the train he was in from falling. Granted, he probably only did it because his beloved Marina was also in the train. But it still doesn't change that he still saved him.
- The Unfettered: A mixture of Type I, III, and V. Zig is obsessed with devouring Marina. And he doesn't care (or consider) what could happen if his attempt fails. He will also use any means to eat her, like Flaw Exploitation and exploiting Sharko's (who's his main obstacle to eating Marina) allergy to gull feathers in "Atchoo!". And in "Daddy Cool" he tricks them into thinking he's a baby. (It Makes Sense in Context.)
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: An implied variant in "Lightning Love". After he regresses into a cub (implied to be the same mentality he had at that age), he starts being a sweetheart. A far cry from his typical villainous and devious self. The episode also suggests he had Innocent Blue Eyes when he was a cub, although his eyes are pinkish now. Which could symbolize him experiencing a "loss of innocence".
- Vampires Hate Garlic: Because she thought he was a vampire, Marina tries to exploit this on Zig via shoving garlic in his mouth in "Dance of the Vampire".
- Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Extremely downplayed. Flashback Episodes reveal Zig never was a match for Sharko physically when they were younger. But it's considerably more noticeable when they both reached adulthood; Sharko gets strong enough to do stuff like lifting an island in "Fishy Story".
- Villain Has a Point: Scoundrel he may be, but Zig has made several accurate points. He states the titular character in "The Mummy" is unstable, for example.
- A Villain Named "Z__rg": A downplayed, non-Science Fiction example; he's an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain named Zig.
- Villainous Breakdown: He has plenty of these, albeit of varying intensities, whenever things don't go his way.
- Villainous Crossdresser: Several times he's gone Disguised in Drag, especially during schemes to eat Marina.
- Villainous Glutton:
- Especially in his salad days; for example he once ate numerous bananas, and it didn't stop him from having a Growling Gut.
- In "Zig's Shadow"; Bernie feeds Zig a Marina-like apple, a shrub resembling her (including its pot), and a painting of her. However, throughout the whole ordeal, his stomach was growling hard enough to shake the ship they were on. And, even when he accidentally swallows a camera, it's implied he was still hungry.
- Villainous Rescue:
- He pretends to do this in "The King's Highway" via tricking Marina into thinking he was going to rescue Sharko.
- At least a couple instances have him try rescuing Marina, like saving her from a storm in... well... "The Storm". Granted, they're out of Pragmatic Villainy.
- Defied in "The Conquistador", in which the titular conquistador was pointing his sword at Sharko. And, while a nearby Zig initially seems like he was going to save him, instead he just grabs some ketchup (It Makes Sense in Context).
- Villainous Underdog: He's the show's Villain Protagonist and a Cosmic Plaything who's constantly thwarted and beaten up by the super strong Sharko.
- Villain Protagonist: It varies as not all episodes center on him. If he's the protagonist of an episode however, you can normally expect him to try to eat Marina.
- "The Villain Sucks" Song: "Marina Superstar" has shades of this:Paws off Marina, ZigThis mermaid's not your gig
- Villains Want Mercy: While not as noticeable as some cases, sometimes Zig tries to get Sharko to spare him.
- Villain Team-Up: He spends much of "The Master of the Volcano" working with Hades.
- Villain with Good Publicity: A zigzagged one. While Zig is the main threat to Marina's life, he normally isn't well-liked (especially, but not exclusively, in season one). However, in a couple episodes, he temporarily gains a good reputation.
- Voices Are Mental: When he swaps bods with Sharko, his voice sounds exactly the same as it did when he was in his original body.
- Walk on Water: He's sometimes shown to run on water.
- Weak, but Skilled: He is unable to beat Sharko, but he and Bernie are both really great builders and constructors.
- Went Crazy When They Left: After his adoptive brother Bernie leaves him in "A Brother's Tiff", Zig eventually begins losing it.
- We Want Our Jerk Back!: A downplayed one in "Veggiezig". After being hypnotized by Sharko, Zig quits being a sneaky villain. And the main cast seems to like the change (though Marina doesn't seem to notice the difference). However, later in the episode, Sharko later wants him to return to his typical self.
- Weak, but Skilled: In a straight-up fight he always gets destroyed by Sharko, but he and Bernie are both really great builders and constructors.
- The World Is Just Awesome: Towards the beginning of "Disco in the Dark", he enters a wacky parallel world. It doesn't take long for him to be impressed by it.
- Would Harm a Senior: Apparently Played for Laughs, but in "The Mime" he throws a elderly turtle off her chair.
- Would Hurt a Child: Occasionally he's shown this. He kicks a baby creature in "Daddy Dearest", for example (even if it's at least slightly justified; said creature is a Tentacled Terror who was harshly grabbing him).
- Yank the Dog's Chain: Part of why he's a Cosmic Plaything. There are multiple instances when something seems to be going Zig's way, but it only falls flat.
- You Are What You Hate: A comical example in "It's Magic"; he's shown to be a shoddy magician and he mocks Sharko for seemingly being that.
- You Have to Believe Me!: Happens in "Sharko's Best friend", in which he repeatedly fails to convince Sharko that his new alien friend is eating everything and everyone on the boat. Even when it eats both Marina and the entire boat itself, he remains completely oblivious to it and almost lets it escape to digest Marina and everyone else in peace. It's only when the alien involuntarily spits out Marina's starfish that Sharko actually listens to him.
